Problems with 2006 Ford Freestyle POWER TRAIN

Auto-up/down function is erratic. battery warning light goes off and on. sudden acceleration at any speed. *kb

Ford freestyle 2006 surging and reving up when putting it in gear. reverse and forward almost had accident again. it seams that there is a lot of problems with this many owners. when putting it in gear it revs up high and then shutsw engine down. check engine light comes on and wrench light comes on. once restarted runs ok untill gear is selected again have to hold brake and hope it works right, seems to happen alot. *tt

I was driving down the road when suddenly the car shuddered and lost accelerator power. the engine was idling, however, i was unable to give the car any gas to get it off of the road, and couldn't even rev the engine with the gas pedal. no response at all from the gas pedal - only idle and engine still running. the "wrench" symbol was illuminated on the dash. i put the car in park, turned it off, restarted the car and the car responded as if nothing had just happened. i am lucky i hadn't reached the intersection yet and was in the process of pulling out to turn in front of oncoming traffic! first time this has ever happened, however, i have been noticing how my car has been surging as i drive. it has not become extreme, however, it is noticeable since i am not pressing the gas pedal any harder when it suddenly accelerates as i drive along. *tr

Both times this has happened, it has been very hot 100+ degrees outside, and the vehicle had been parked, idling for a few minutes (5-15 mins). upon putting car in gear, the vehicle engine surged. luckily the foot was on the brake pedal. while experiencing these problems, vehicle has died twice, and tends to do it more at low, idle only speeds, for example while parking or pulling out of the driveway. once, we were driving from out of town, and the vehicle was sluggish on acceleration, and never seemed to switch gears. we made it home, then let it cool, and it ran fine for several days. about a week later, having the same issues. going to take it into the ford dealer tomorrow and have them look at it, referencing the nhtsa investigation into the ford freestyles. *tr

My 2006 ford freestyle began to either stall soon after it was started, or worse still, lunge forward a short distance. in both instances the outdoor temperature was over 90 degrees and the air conditioner was turned on. an hour after this a transmission warning light came on. i had it looked into the next day on 6/13/2001. the ford dealership where i took it to ( greenway ford, orlando, fl.) ford ran an eec system diagnosis and found that the throttle control had to be replaced and the on board computer adjusted. since the way the vehicle lurched forward, although i was able to brake it before it went a foot, it would seem to pose a danger to individuals nearby the vehicle. *tr

We have a 2006 ford freestyle that lunges forward or reverse mainly when the a/c is on during slow parking lot type movements. i took it to the dealer in the past for this and they did "something" but the problem is still evident. this happens a lot and i've almost hit other cars because of it. please look into a proper repair. *tr

When we put our ford freestyle into drive or reverse it suddenly accelerates without depressing the accelerator. the engine revs to 2000-2500 rpms. *tr

Vehicle will after being put in drive from park will surge, it will rev to 4000 rpm and then die. have nearly hit a pedestrian due to this problem as well as surging nearly into a car stopped in front of me. this is dangerous. *kb i have the car in the dealer right now, says that it's the throttle body assembly which is going to cost us over 1000.00 to fix. by reading all these complaints listed on the nhtsa website this is a big problem with this model. please issue a recall or technical service bulletin in order to force ford into fixing this issue. there is apparantly a nationwide shortage of throttle bodies due to the issue being so wide spread so that has to tell you something about how widespread this problem is. does someone have to die or get injured in order to get this issue fixed.

My issue started almost a about a year ago. i was in a parking lot waiting for my son and had air conditioner on and we sat for about 30 min. as soon as i pushed brake in and about to put in d we lunged a couple of times and i was able to stop with brake. i tried again and we lunged again. i put in r and we bolted out of spot. luckily no one was behind us. finally was able to get in d and then we stalled. i've had the transmission cleaned and fluids replaced, but we have been having the same issue over this past year.the latest episode was when i finally got the car to drive and i was barely moving. i was on a busy road trying to go past 10mph. i am seeing tons of complaints about this same issue and am wondering why this hasn't been solved????? it is obviously a defect. why wait till someone gets killed and then sues. *tr

The last month, the car has been lunging forward when the a/c is on and my foot is on the brake. it has lunged backward when pulling out of parking spaces and forward when it is at a complete stop. the wrench came on and he car stalled at a drive thru and drove very slow after restarting. the car was taken to the dealer for a diagnostic. *tr

I drive a 2006 freestyle. just weeks after buying it from used dealer the vehicle started lunging when i would attempt to stop or be at a slow pace. example being in parking lot and trying to park it would lung from about 1000 rpm to 4000-5000 rpms. this would throw my car forward. i did tap a car that day but no body damage. also the car will be driving down the road and the wrench comes on and motor shuts down. there is no warning and has been very scary when merging into 75mph traffic with no where to go. on the 6th of june 2011 the throttle body was replaced. however within the 30 days all symptoms were occurring again. i had the compressor go out which cost $1000 to replace. on 12/02/11 i took the vehicle back to the shop, they ran codes and found it was the transmission. i have many accounts of the lunging and the wrench shut down issue. it has become very regular and makes my car very unreliable.

While driving the car lost power and quit in traffic. this is the 2nd time in two years this problem has happened. the 1st was in 2009 and was told by ford dealership that the throttle body needed replaced. now on 6-4-11 the car is doing the same thing, again the dealership told me it needed yet another throttle body. this is a safety issue we were in downtown traffic when the car quit,we could have been in an accident because of this! *tr

Vehicle lunges randomly when i am backing up and occasionally when i am going forward. it has been doing it for a while. i had to put both feet on the brake pedal to keep it from hitting a pole. took it to the dealership and they diagnosed it as being the throttle body. upon doing research, i saw that it has been a problem with several vehicle of the same make. as for a date when this occurs, it is like i stated before it is random and has been doing it for a while and more frequently. *tr

I purchased a 2006 ford freestyle in march 2011. in may it started lunging when it was first put into gear with my foot applied on the brake. it got worse when the air had been on and the car is idling. to the point it started stalling and the transmission light came on. i took it to shop on may 31. stayed there til fri. june 3. they replaced the throttle body. drove it back home over an hour away just for it to happen again. now i have to return to the shop for them to see what else they can find. *tr

In the summer of 2011 our freestyle began to surge as far as two feet while driven at low speeds and also while at a complete stop, surging forward or backward when in reverse, revving loudly and subsequently stalling. concerned, we took the vehicle to our ford service department. the ford service department told us that the problem was uncommon (not true) and did not mention any service bulletins before reprogramming our freestyles pcm and replacing the throttle body. *tr

My wife was entering a parking space and the vehicle lunged forward after she had removed her foot from the accelerator. the vehicle struck a row of shopping carts and caused a crease in the right rear door.

When starting vehicle (2006 ford freestyle se) and placing in gear, vehicle lurches and sometimes stalls. with brakes firmly applied, vehicle does not move much, but if vehicle is already moving, it may propel forward several feet suddenly. on the reported incident date, the automobile lurched while backing out of a driveway in reverse. the car unexpectedly lurched backwards into the street, then stalled. an accident could have occurred if other cars were on the roadway. the a/c was running at the time of all occurrences. *tr

Returning home with my children, when my 2006 ford freestyle lurched horribly, accelerating first, then dropping down to almost no power at all, with the yellow wrench light turned on, and then would barely accelerate till i got home and turned the engine off, then re-started it and the car acted relatively normal. fortunately was on a country road, and no other cars around when incident occurred. *tr

2006 ford freestyle is having an acceleration problem. i first noticed it in the morning one i put it in reverse and had my foot on the brake the car would wand to go by itself. as it get hotter the problem occurs more. then in 2010 the ac went out and i spent $1100 in repairs. the problem didn't occur to often in the winter however in the past month the car now accelerates forward and backward. it also accelerates when you are driving. this had not happen before. today i was driving on a very busy street when the car lunge and then died. i started the car again and it would go very slow as if it had lost power. it turned off 3 more times and then as i pressed the gas the wrench light came on. i called the dealer and will be taking it in. however, this has been an ongoing problem and as i think about all the incidents over the past year, it seems this may be a problem that is escalated by the air condition and when temperatures rise. i have own many fords and this has never happened with one of them. i think this may be a serious defect that should be recalled. *tr

Car lurches on its own with my foot on the brake. happens most in reverse when backing up out of a parking space, but has also happened several times while idling in a drive thru line. i have had several near collisions due to this problem. it happens almost always when first put into reverse. i have learned to keep my foot on the brake. it is an ongoing problem. *tr

2006 ford freestyle lunging started about 2 months ago. it happens often, thought it was just when i ran the air conditioner but it is happening all the time now. it will happen when the car is going forward and in reverse and sometimes it will die on me. i've already heard of this problem being responsible for 1 injury and i'm afraid it could continue to happen to other freestyle owners including myself. i should not have to pay for this problem. ford needs to own up to the fact that this is their fault and recall all freestyles made within 2006-2007. as i am researching this problem with the freestyle i am becoming aware that ford has known about this issue for some time now and have not done anything about it. if this is how they are going to make vehicles and treat their customers then i can assure you that most of their costumers will choose to go elsewhere with their business, including myself! they need to recall this model and fix it!!!! i am at 65,000 mile's and this is unacceptable to me and every other owner out there.!!! please do something about this mess. *kb

I would like to file a complaint about our 2006 ford freestyle. our vehicle has the cvt transmission and has started revving and jolting forward when i place the car in drive, reverse or even when i come to a stop. i have noticed since i have started using the air conditioning that the problem has gotten more frequent and more powerful. i have been sitting at a drive-thru and almost hit the car in front of me because my car jolted forward. i am afraid i am going to end up hitting another vehicle or someone if the problem continues or gets worse. *tr

2006 ford freestyle. lunges at idle speed, often with brake pedal depressed. vehicle has been taken to numerous repair facilities, including ford dealerships, and none can determine the cause of the problem. considering the number of identical complaints, when will ford be owning up to this issue and issuing a recall to fix it at their expense? we also have a problem with the car stalling while in cruise control at speeds of 60mph or higher. consider being on a freeway with no power steering or brakes at 60-70 mph, semi trucks and other vehicles speeding around you, and trying to get the vehicle off the roadway safely. again, no repair facility can determine the cause. *tr

My 2006 ford freestyle lurches forward when i take my foot off the brake. generally happens when idling and only in warm weather. it actually jumps forward and have to press my foot all the down on the brake hard to try to control it. i never get close behind anyone for fear of jumping into them. i've so far not had any accidents although have had many close calls, including almost running into pedestrians crossing a parking lot. very very scary. sometimes the car will stall after a huge lurch. i took it into ford 2 years ago to explain but they said nothing was wrong with it. i beg to differ on that. *tr

On sat. may 14 my ford freestyle 2006 lunged forward after stopping and before putting the car into "park". on sun. may 15 my ford freestyle 2006 lunged forward again while at a sit still between stopping and putting the car in park!!! *tr

My 2006 ford lunges. it also loses power and cuts off while trying to drive. this happens everywhere and anywhere. even if my foot is on the brake it will lunge forward or backward it does no discriminate. this happens all the time. it's also worse when the air conditioning is on. this could potentially be a serious situation on the highways and local streets, if the car is just cutting off while driving down the road. lunging forward/backward could become potentially serious as well. i really hope that ford takes responsibility for these issues. especially since they stopped making the freestyle what 3 yrs later. it seems to me that they realized there was some kind of an issue why else would they quit making it? i have to say other than that major problem of lunging and going through rear brakes the car itself is wonderful and not my first ford. i love ford vehicles, unfortunately i am a little disappointed with this one. if ford would take responsibility and fix it that would be great! i can't afford to fix it nor get another vehicle. i feel like i have a lemon on my hands. *tr

Upon starting the car and putting it in either reverse or forward, the engine would race and either lunge forward or backward. while driving, the engine would sputter and stall. this was more prevalent when the air conditioning was turned on. on starting the car, i had to place my foot with a lot of pressure on the brake pedal to ensure that the car did not lunge. this was a very dangerous problem as i have two small children in the car and they could be hurt if the car stalled in heavy traffic and was struck. the dealer said that this was not under warranty and that they understood the problem but ford has not issued a recall on the part. it was rather expensive to replace this part. i am urging the government to issue a recall on this part before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. the part in question is the throttle body. *kb

Vehicle transmission failed without warning while driving on highway on may 10, 2011. vehicle was towed to a local repair shop. was told that this particular transmission (cvt) has a high failure rate, is usually not repairable, and is very expensive to replace (over $5,600). transmission can only be replaced with the same problematic transmission which will likely fail again, and is only available from ford, and even requires special tools to work on it. vehicle only has 71k miles on it and is properly maintained. contacted ford who refused to help, and contacted dealership where purchased who refused to help. transmission problem is well documented all over the internet, yet there is no recall to help consumers. ford should not be allowed to get away with sticking american families with this defective and poorly manufactured product. *tr

Not sure on date when incident occurred, but the vehicle would start lunging even while brake pedal was engaged. problem worsened over a short period of time to where it would cut off multiple times. also problem would get worse while air condition was on. one day pulling into a parking spot one day the vehicle lunged forward causing me to hit a parking block. damage was done to the front bumper only. eventually it got to where we were unable to drive the vehicle. has been parked for several months. will crank up for a couple seconds and will cut off. *tr

My car began having problems lunging forward while i was stopped at a school zone cross-walk waiting for children to cross. it lunged forward and stopped just inches from hitting 4 children. it terrified me!!!! it happened several times that day and the next day until i could get it in the shop. i was told it needed the throttle body replaced by the ford mechanics but luckily i got by with just a throttle body cleaning. the car no longer lunges forward. about the same time, the car had problems feeling like it wouldn't get past 2nd gear and it wouldn't accelerate. i still don't know what caused this. a few months later the car started making a strange clicking noise that would get faster when i would accelerate then slower when i would brake. it quit making the noise by the time i could take it to get it looked at a few days later. the air conditioner won't get cold unless the car is in motion. the heater does the same thing. it only seems to happen on extreme temperature days. then spontaneously, both these problems seemed to fix themselves. just this week, my car backfired 2 times, then the next morning when i started it, it smelled horrible! i turned it off immediately, then the next day, it wouldn't start. took it to my ford mechanic, and he said everything checked out ok. he now thinks there is something wrong with the computer system. everything i have read on the internet suggests that these have been huge problems for many ford freestyle owners. and yet no recall? come on ford!! you have lost many loyal customers over this!! please help all of us to get a recall issued for this car!! i am a single mother of three children, and if i get stranded, i, like many people, have nobody to call and no way to pay if i get stranded. please help before someone gets seriously injured or even killed. many other probs but no room to list. *tr

My 2006 ford freestyle had a major surge problem at low speed, often when turning into a park place. some times it shut the car off and sets the check engine light. this has happened many, many times. *tr

Sunday, may 8, 2011-2006 ford freestyle se was parked and running with wife in front passenger seat and daughter in child seat in the back while i was in a computer store purchasing a hard drive connector. when i returned to the car, my wife had the air conditioning on due to the temperature rising while sitting idling in the sun. i put the car in reverse to back out of my parking spot and had the brake on while coasting back, and then the car jumped...like i was pressing the gas pedal. immediately, i depressed the brake much harder. then the "wrench" shaped light illuminated on my dashboard but the car did not stall. i then continued to back out of the spot and then put it in drive to drive home. the wrench light stayed on and the car didn't seem to respond to the gas pedal like normal. i had the gas pedal almost fully depressed to get to 35 miles per hour. my goal was to get the limping car to my driveway about 2 miles away. once the car was parked in my driveway, i turned it off, then immediately restarted the car. once it restarted, the wrench light was no longer displayed and the car drove normally. the cars computer had to be "reprogrammed" at the ford dealer three days prior because the car all of the sudden would not start. only 34,000 miles on the car. *tr

I pulled into my garage, placed the car in park, turned it off, returned in 30 minutes, started right up, placed transmission in reverse, heard and felt a large bang, whining noise from engine, wrench light came on, that was the last time i drove it. i had it towed to a shop, replaced the computer, recoded, reflashed, nothing worked. i was told it needs a new transmission. new transmission estimate is $7000.00...ford should be held accountable for a flawed design...i was fortunate in that my transmission failed in my garage, others were not so lucky. please dont wait until someone's family is killed before you force a much needed recall on some seriously bad research and development. *tr

Got in my car to go home one afternoon and it cranked but when i pressed the gas pedal it wouldn't move. had to call a tow truck and have it towed to a shop. my car spent 2 weeks in the shop and it was determined it was the throttle body. i was told by my mechanic that this is a common problem on the freestyle and is usually one of the first major repairs needed. *kb

We have a 2006 freestyle and are experiencing a lunging problem when sitting idle. it happens in reverse or drive. fortunately, we have been alert and applied the breaks before running in to something or someone. this is not a good situation and it is a matter of time before someone gets hurt. one other thing, we only have 65,000 miles on the vehicle. *kb

Vehicle surges with no application of the accelerator. the surge seems to occur when the vehicle is in drive or reverse, with or without the brake applied, and seems to occur when the air conditioning is on although not all surges have occurred with the air-conditioning on. this problem is intermittent and seems to occur in spring, summer and fall months when the air-conditioning has been in use. this surging problem has occurred several times over the past couple of years. the most recent incident occurred when the vehicle was parked in a driveway in front of a home. the vehicle was taken out of park and placed in reverse when the vehicle surged backward to the end of the driveway. the accelerator was not applied to make the vehicle move and the air-conditioning was not on at the time of the surge although it had been used early that day. *tr

The car will randomly surge when stopped or at low speeds and beginning to accelerate. it seems like it just wants to go from an even idle to floored sometimes, just momentarily. could happen when you are getting into or out of a parking space, pulling out of an intersection...doesn't seem to be any particular conditions. lately has started to shudder at mid speeds (15-40 mph) and surge ahead as if you were moving the accelerator pedal, even though your foot is stock still. getting to be a little uneasy having my wife drive the car. *tr

Car lunges forward, or reverse, from stop or low speed, especially when air conditioner is on. i was pulling into a parking spot 2 weeks ago in a parking garage with a concrete wall in front of the car and nearly hit the wall when the car lunged forward as the air conditioner compressor cycled on. this is a big problem pulling into my garage as i have to be very careful not to run into the back wall of the garage and end up in my house. the car did not do this when newer and has been building up to much more of an issue the past several months. *tr

I was sitting in the car with the air conditioner on for about 10 minutes with my children while my wife went to pick up a few groceries. when we left i put the car reverse and slowly took my foot of the break. the car then jerked backwards as my foot was softly on the break and then again when it was off the break. the car then stalled and the wrench light appeared. this has happened several more times since, mostly when the car is in "drive" with the air conditioner working hard and my foot either softly on the break or just off the break. the car will jerk forward. i'm not sure the component that is malfunctioning, but bellow is an educated guess.

I have an 06 freestyle that surges forward or backward without pressing the accelerator. this has happened numerous times especially when running the a/c. i have to make sure and stay away from other cars at a red light for instance or the car would lunge in the them. i was told it was the throttle body. haven't been able to replace. *tr

2006 ford freestyle with approx. 66,500 miles on it, has problems with throttle body as diagnosed by ford coastal in mobile, al. before diagnosis, my freestyle would suddenly lounge or accelerate, uncommanded, while backing up (reverse), out of parking area. engine light and maintenance "wrench light" soon follow after these series of events. ford coastal suggests replacing throttle body. this part is not covered by my powertrain warranty. the cost is $920 to be shouldered by the car owner. *tr

One day i put the car in reverse and it lunged uncontrollably. then when i started driving, it would barely move. the transmission light went on, so i went right to a mechanic. two in fact because the first couldn't find anything with the transmission and neither could the second. but when i turned it off completely and restarted, it reset itself and it was fine. didn't happen for a good while, then again. repeat these steps to now, it is a frequent occurance. single mom with five year old twins and can't afford this throttle body thing i am reading about. but can't keep driving my kids in the car because it is a safety hazzard as it will just stop moving on the highway. also, the seatbelt in the center of the second row locked up when the back was folded down and i couldn't lift it back up. had to cut it to lift the seat back. now, no seatbelt for middle rider. *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving 10 mph, the wrench warning icon illuminated and the vehicle would not accelerate. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the transmission would need to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 182,000.
