Problems with 2006 Ford Freestyle POWER TRAIN

Lurching or sudden acceleration. *tr

This has happened twice. after driving on the interstate for about 60 miles@80 mph the wrench light started flashing and care would shut down. transmission fluid was spewing out the vent tube. i had the transmission replaced and 2 months latter it has happened again. i have been following up on this issue and it seems a lot of people are experiencing similar problems!!! *tr

Around the middle of november 2012, i started noticing a slight knocking coming from under the hood while the vehicle was idling. it seemed to go away when i put the car in gear and started to drive. during the next couple of weeks the knocking was getting worse. i noticed it louder and louder as i was driving. then, the only time the knocking went away was when the car was put in reverse. now, i'm starting to get very concerned about my car breaking down while i am out. shortly after this, i received a recall notice about the throttle body. so, i took it in on january 23, 2013 to have the throttle body recall procedure done. while it was at the authorized "ford" dealership having this procedure done, i asked them to check out the noise i was hearing. they informed me it was a bearing that was within the transmission causing the issue and would need replaced. i was told that the part itself was not able to be replaced, but the whole transmission needed to be replaced. they recommended a "new" transmission be installed at the cost of $5200.00. a used one might result in the same circumstances happening. however, due to the issues with this "cvt" transmission, there may not be "new" one available for a while. i was then informed, that because of this "cvt" issue, ford has extended the warranty on the 2008+ model years up to 100,000 miles. so, this means i am left with a worthless 2006 "ford" vehicle with 95,508 miles. which "ford" knows has a defective part and has chosen to ignore and refuses any responsibility for it. what am i to do? is this how, we as consumers, should expect our vehicles to perform? i loved the styling and features of this car, but i can't see putting $5200.00 into this vehicle at this point and down the road the same thing happening or something new that they have known about. where do i go from here? *tr

While driving the car revved up. the wrench light came on .took to shop the next day had the following codes. p0871,p0961,p0701. told i need a new transmission at the tune of 6000.00. *tr

I went to put my car into park and my car accelerated had to jump on the brakes with both feet car stalled restarted it had no power and recently transmission was making noise had loss of power i would step on the gas and the car wouldn't move i would shut the car off and restarted it and it would be fine then one night i was driving it had my kids in the car and my car lost all drive gears no acceleration car would just not move left us stranded my car only has 77000 miles on it and its only 6 years old i should not be having these kind of problems with it i have been reading on line there's alot of people who owns the 2006 ford freestyle are having this same problem so with all these complaints why is there no recall on this car i got the car back in january from my father who passed away i finished paying it off for him he bought it brand new and now there's alot of expensive repairs that i cant afford i don't want to get rid of it has alot of sentimental value it belonged to my deceased father. *tr

So many issues with the transmission not sure where to start. car was running fine yesterday and then today car had the wrench light on and lost power on the expressway at about 75 mph. turned the card off and the light was still on but at least i got partial power. the car shudders and won't shift and sometimes when i push the gas pedal nothing happens. when i am stopped car will lunge forward even with my foot on the brake. called several ford dealerships and they said they are not certified to work on that type of trans but they will replace it for 7000.00!!!! i have read so many posts with the exact same issue. why is there no recall?? i could have been killed!!! or worse my kids could have been hurt. doesn't anyone care enough to do something? *tr

Cvt transmission must be replaced. our 2006 ford freestyle whines when in neutral or park. the whine continues (at a lower decibel) when driving. our ase certified tech told us that this problem is common with this type of car and is fully described in ford's tsb 06-11-4. ford is unwilling to assist us with the cost of the repair. a quick internet search tells interested parties that this is a very common problem with this car and this type of transmission. further, it is our opinion that this repair should be covered by ford since many, many owners have the same problem. please issue a recall for this very costly repair. *tr

For about 6 months prior to 10/02/12 i began to have intermittent problems with my freestyle lunging forward in drive and your foot was on the brake, or lunging backwards at slow speeds in the same scenario. it had gotten so bad that troubles started bleeding over into the gears not catching when i put it in drive or reverse. it was throwing tons of codes, so i ended up having it towed to the dealership. they read the codes and said the throttle body needed to be replaced and hopefully after it's replaced the other codes will go away. so after a bill of $1038. the throttle body was fixed, or was it? my problems only continued, now we were into the cvt transmission. with my car still throwing tons of codes, it was determined that the tranny was bad. as i hung my head low, knowing what this involved, i kept trying to reset the codes and see how long she would go before she gave up again. 3 tows later and to a transmission shop, i ended up with a $3000 rebuilt transmission :-( the throttle body is a known issue, but yet ford doesn't have a recall and is allowing its loyal customers to pay out the ying-yang for this thing. the tranny, the same thing, because it's a cvt 'very special and no one works on them' lol, tons of people have done the same thing and only had the option to replace the tranny. i am so upside down in my car and tried like hell to get into another one but to no avail, did i mention i only have 75,000 miles on my car?! this is a tragedy to me. i've been a loyal ford owner for my entire life, and it saddens me to see so many customers that have the same car and are getting shafted because 'big money' doesn't want to address an obviously dangerous issue. hoping that by stating my concerns and what i had to go through that something will be done. i have my receipts and that's great and all but i'm also out $4,000...in this economy, that sucks for me. *tr

On september 26, 2012 at approximately 7:15 am, while driving approximately 55 miles per hour on a major highway, approaching an intersection of another major highway, our ford freestyle quickly lost acceleration. the gas pedal did not react to the driver, when depressed the only reaction from the car was revving of the engine (rpm's). the vehicle was safely 'glided' to the shoulder of the busy intersection. our freestyle had experienced a complete transmission failure. ford was unable to repair our freestyle due to no longer manufacturing the transmission - it was on back order and unable to be purchased by us to repair the car. it was sold for scrap at 55,600 miles and 27 days past the 6 year bumper to bumper warranty. *tr

When i stop the car at a traffic light or any stop, the car is accelerated. and have problems to run again. this is the second time i have to replaced the throttle body. *tr

At a very low speed the throttle body stuck open, and the car lunged backwards. i had to slam on the breaks hard to not zoom out into the parking lot into a passing car. the check engine, "wrench" light came on and the lunging kept continuing both in forward and reverse for several seconds. finally, it appeared to stop once i put the car in neutral, and i was able to back out of the parking space. after that, there was something definitely wrong with the throttle itself. i was unable to accelerate into traffic at the necessary rate. this is a reoccurring problem as there are hundreds if not thousands of reports and complaints about 2005-2006 freestyles and 500s. i would hope that ford would do the right thing and recall this part for the safety of their customers and everyone on the roadway. *tr

The transmission has to be replaced with only 65,000 at a cost of $6000. ford is aware of cvt transmission defects and failure in it's 2005 thru 2007 freestyles, yet it has done nothing to assist its customers with this issue, despite numerous complaints from the vehicle owners including myself. *tr

Anytime i go from park to reverse or drive at idle speed my car lunges. on this particular day i was backing out of a parking spot. the car lunged so hard it through codes and the wrench on the dash lite up and car lost all acceleration power. i parked the car and drove it the next day and the power was back and the wrench was not lite anymore. it really scares me to drive this car. *tr

I have owned my 2006 ford freestyle for just over a year....in this short time i have had it in the shop twice, both for major repairs. the first time was within weeks of my driving it off the lot; all of a sudden my car stopped recognizing the key (i guess it's a smart key with a chip embedded in it). i had to get my car towed to two dealerships before the second one had it for multiple days before getting it back. this time i was leaving the store with my daughters. i started my car and shifted the gear to drive and although my car made the accelerating sound, it went absolutely nowhere. i then tried to reverse it and put it in neutral to see what it would do. i once again had to get it towed to two different dealerships and it has now been at the current dealership for over a week and they are having to disassemble my transmission to determine what is wrong with it. i did a very generic search on google for recalls on my car and stumbled upon www.edmunds.com where there are numerous complaints about transmission issues in the 2006 and 2007 ford freestyles as well as lunging issues. my car did this once while i was driving my children to school. i was turning a curb and felt it accelerate immediately and it shocked me so that i threw on my brakes and almost caused an accident. out of this letter, i would like to see a recall on the 2006 ford freestyles for transmission issues where the manufacturer would be responsible for negligence in making these cars and repairs associated with it. this is my third car that i have owned and my first ford car. after these issues in such a short time of ownership i promise you it will be my last ford. very unhappy freestyle owner!!! Backing from driveway into the street, car surged but was able to stop it when brake applied. at that point the vehicle stalled. able to restart and continue without incident but warning "wrench" light was on indicating throttle / transmission fault was detected and service required. after restarting later that day no problems noticed and no warning light. this was the most severe case so far but had noticed some small surging in prior weeks both in reverse and drive when starting out both from cold start and from restart conditions. further research suggests this is a well know throttle body problem for ford freestyle / 500 / montego models from 2005 / 2006 timeframe. safety risk is significant, cannot let other family members or any less experienced operators drive this vehicle until the problem is addressed. replacement or at least maintenance for this known faulty system should be provided at no charge by the manufacturer. *tr

Wife was driving on i540 near raleigh, nc and car "wrench" icon came on and car decelerated quickly causing a dangerous condition. car was unable to be driven and required towing to a safe place. appears that the throttle controller malfunctioned causing the car to be disabled temporarily. after the car cooled the throttle worked but we elected not to drive until a local mechanic could check out this condition / problem. we towed the vehicle on a trailer to local garage near our home. *tr

My family was sitting in the car while it was parked in drive. it stalled out and made a strange sound that sounded like a problem with the transmission. i have noticed that when it is hot it seems to accelerate on its own. i have noticed that it usually happens at low speeds and reverse. i feel that this is very dangerous. i have researched this car online and have read that this has happened to quite a few of these cars. i wanted to make sure that this defect has been noted. thank you for your time. *tr

I have a 2006 freestyle and it has the lunging problem with the air on and or the steering wheel being moved. happens every time we back out of our driveway or parking spot, sometimes sitting in an intersection waiting to turn also. the car surges in both reverse and forward without warning. this hasn't caused a crash (yet) but i don't like my wife driving my three children in a car that does this!! and to be clear about the first date of occurrence, i put today's date because we have owned this car for a couple of years now and did not know there was an investigation into this. the surging/lunging problem happens every day and has been getting worse. *tr

The throttle body unit was malfunctioning causing the vehicle to strain, lurch, and accelerate without depression of accelerator. the throttle body was cleaned and then about 2 months after, the malfunction returned. after extensive research, i viewed dozens of similar complaints, some at low speeds in parking lots, in which pedestrians were almost struck. *tr

Air temperature was 100 and my 2006 freestyle was idling. then, when stopped in city traffic, car surged unexpectedly requiring me to press hard on the brakes, then stalled. this happened twice. after sitting and cooling for 2+ hours, the car ran fine. however, check engine light remained on. because i am on vacation, i took the car to a dealer. the service department determined the problem was related to the throttle assembly, which he said was pretty common. replaced the assembly for $1300 for fear the problem could happen again on the highway. *tr

While driving on the expressway, car failed to have continued forward propulsion and stalled. this has happened repeatedly since then. i can't idle, run heat or a/c for more than a few minutes, while consistently keeping my rpms over 1500 without it stalling. ( as i live in michigan this is a big problem!) now i can't get it to start at all. my husband being good with cars has flushed the throttle body twice (recommended action we could find on internet at the time.) has stalled at a variety of speeds, while driving in a variety of settings. *tr

Vehicle for over a year has lunged forward or backward depending on gear it is in. this only takes place when the a/c is on in the vehicle. this is inconsistent but happens more often than not. the lunge is drastic enough that it is a hazard and has caused several issues in the past. the problem has continued to worsen. dealer has not been contacted at this point but was on the list to been seen next week. all required maintenance has taken place up to this point. today was the worst part of the issue. while traveling 75 on the interstate, the "wrench" icon on the information panel came on. at this point all acceleration was disabled and could not keep up with the flow of traffic. the vehicle could not get above 60 in order to find a safe place to park and created a significantly hazardous situation. in researching the issue, i have found over 242 filed complaints on the same problem. we will be dropping the vehicle off at the dealer asap. how many reported incidents does it take before something is done about this issue? or will it take a loss of human life to take notice of the numerous filed complaints? *tr

Transmission went out at 50,000 miles apx. after googling i found this is common with this car. i also am currently dealing with what i think its a throttle body issue. i did a search on edmunds.com and found a 12 page thread of people have similar issues. the car with revved up and lurched backwards and also forwards which is very scary and dangerous. i've had issues with getting the car to go above a certain speed as well. i will put the car into reverse and ease my foot off the brake and not even touch the gas pedal and fly backwards. i am terrified that one of these days i will not be able to stop the car. i am going to have it fixed but from reading others experiences it only solves the problem for a year or two and then they are back to the start again. it seems even this website has over 5 pages of complaints don't you think it is time to do something? *tr

Since about june of 2012, wrench indicator will intermittently come on after driving 30-100 miles. i stop the vehicle, turn off the ignition and after a few seconds turn the ignition on and it seems ok. sometimes i can go over 100 miles without the problem. there are times when the engine light comes on after the wrench but this indicator stays on after turning the ignition back on and stays on for a day or two. the local ford dealership says this is a most likely a cvt problem but i have no assurance that this will be the fix. i have researched this problem on the internet and have noticed that i am not the only one with this problem. from the blogs i've read, ford should have a recall addressing this specific problem. there is a recall addressing a surge, but this is different. *tr

On multiple occasions the vehicle has lurched forward or backward without having my foot on the accelerator. applying the brake has stopped the car. the rear bumper was damaged when it hit a light pole. it seems to happen more frequently when it's warmer outside and when running the air conditioning. i'm very concerne someone might get injured. my wife has also had this happen to her on multiple occasion. i've read a number of similar complaints on the internet. i believe this vehicle should be recalled. i'm a mechanical engineer by degree and can state with certainty that this is a dangerous condition especially in a parking lot where it most frequently happens. i won't even attempt to backup the vehicle if someone is nearby in case it has one of these fits. please keep me posted on any recall updates. do the right thing, force the manufacturer to own up to the problem and take care of it. i took it in to have it fixed, but nobody seems to know or is willing to say what's wrong. they just offer to change out a lot of parts in the hopes of hitting upon the problem. that's too expensive of an approach. does ford know the source of the problem? will they share that information with their dealerships or the consumers? *tt

Vehicle lunges and has poor gas mileage. we have almost been in several accidents and going thru brakes more than normal due to this issue. ford issued a complimentary customer satisfaction service to clean the throttle body and i am continuing to have this problem. ford was notified and we were told that its not a safety issue and any repair is my responsibility. *tr

While backing up the car lunges when foot is still on the brake. car will occasionally lunge forward when pulling out of a parking spot or when stopped at traffic light or stop sign. very unsafe!!!!!! must make sure my foot is on the brake hard when stopped or be ready to quickly brake when backing up. the ac is sometimes on when this happens and the temperature is in the upper 80's. we live in colorado springs, co and 80 degree temp are pretty hot here. lately it has been in the 90 degree + range and the issue has been happening more. my wife mostly drives this car and our teenage daughter, new drive with a permit, is learning to drive, this is not safe!!!. please put pressure on ford to fix this safety item. seems like may others are having the same issue. will it take for someone to be seriously hurt or killed before this gets looked at? how many accidents major or minor has this caused? how many insurance rates have increased because of these accidents? please do something about this!!!!!!! *tr

My 2006 ford freestyle surges mainly in reverse, but also does it in drive at times. the first time it surged i thought maybe my foot had hit the accelerator and dismissed it. i started driving this car in october of 2010 and had not experienced the problem until then, but now it happens frequently. i have no idea about previous owners or the car's history so i only know how it has been maintained since i have owned it. also there are 2 technical service bulletins that are also wrong with my car. tsb 07-1-8 and 06-11-4 i think that since ford knows there are problems with this cvt transmission that they ought to recall the vehicles and repair them. *tr

Engine speed will surge and vehicle will lunge forward or rearward, depending upon which gear the transmission is in, at unexpected times. always noticeable near 0-2 mph with a/c on, foot on or off brake pedal, may or may not be turning. we have scared people in crosswalks and drive-thrus with this. it scares us as well. *tr

Cvt transmission bad and has to be replaced. there is a recall on the torch converter on the cvt trans but replacing it doesnt really fix the problem even though it was the cause of the original problem. once it goes bad you have bits and pieces of metal floating around all over everywhere else and the transmission just goes regardless. useless recall. also, the ac only blows cold at high speeds ....when driving slow in town it blows warm and i'm having electrical problems with the windows ....goes down when i pull up or wont go at all. *js

Experienced an engine surge and lunge while waiting at a traffic light with my foot on the brake. panel lamp (wrench) came on. then when trying to accelerate through intersection could not increase velocity, as if i was sort of stuck in "low gear." i pulled off of roadway and stopped the engine. after restart, problem seemed to be recurring but began to function more normally. on the next restart (trying to drive to repair shop) there was another episode of lunging when trying to stop (foot on brake, not accelerator.) pretty scary. my shop found codes, did research, and subsequently replaced throttle-body and a broken upper engine mount. they also re-flashed the computer. 1 month ago they had replaced the battery. drove home ok, and no issues in last few days, but have read anecdotes that these problems continue once they start. don't know what % of freestyles do this, but it is a real and dangerous problem on those that do. i'm afraid to put my wife back into this vehicle! *tr

While traveling home from holiday, my wrench light came on in the car and we could smell the engine beginning to overheat. my engine was trying to lunge forward even though i had the cruise control on. my vehicle then started to decelerate and i barely made it off from the highway via an exit ramp. pulled over, turned off the car and opened the hood to let the engine cool off. i thought the problem may be gear or transmission related or perhaps bad gas. i tried a trick told to me by mechanic friend to back up the car and go forward approximately 40-50 feet, stop the vehicle and repeat the movement again to reset the transmission controls. i also added fuel injection cleaner and filled the tank again. after fuel injection and letting the car sit, it was okay for the rest of the trip. had another incident just recently (july 2012). the same wrench light came on and my car once again lunged and decelerated and i had to pull off. luckily, there was a gas station at exit again. and, luckily, i was able to maneuver through traffic when decelerating without harm to my family. i bought more fuel injection cleaner and filled the tank. i then let the car sit again. that seemed to help. we made it home after another rest stop for the car. shortly after, my husband used throttle body cleaner to clean out my fuel injection pathway. he removed air connection and found the throttle body to be clogged with gunky material and sprayed a good dose of the cleaner into it while i gunned the engine to clear it out. i am now using fuel injection cleaner with every gas fillup to mitigate the problem. i know i probably need to replace the whole throttle body, but i am leary from what i've read on internet with others having same problem, replacing throttle body and then it having to do it again a year later. i am going to fix car and then probably sell it. not safe anymore. *tr

I have had 8-9 instances where the car lunges forward in parking lot type situations. i had to make sure i didn't have half my foot on the brake and half on the gas. it was 100% on the brake, but felt like someone was pushing the gas at the same time. *tr back in may, i had a different issue. i drove to the local grocery store 3 miles away. on the way, it started running rough, acting like i was about to run out of gas (i had filled it earlier that day.) i pulled over. a wrench symbol appeared on the dash lights. i couldn't find anything wrong. i continued to the grocer. after shopping, when i backed out of the parking space, the car lunged, then stalled. it took a bit, but i was able to get it restarted. i drove home, but it wouldn't go faster than 20 mph. the next day, i was going to take the car to the dealership, but it was running perfectly. it's been 2 months now and the issue has not recurred, but i'm very leery of taking the car on a long drive. i don't want to get stranded far from home.

the continuously variable transmission(cvt) found in my ford freestyle 2006 vehicle contains design and manufacturing defects that lead to powertrain failure.. ford has known about this safety problem since 2005 and has issued technical service bulletins to dealers regarding the defect, but it has never informed me and other consumer(s). this vehicle(s) and their cvt transmissions fail, suddenly and unexpectedly, at any time and under any driving condition or speed, further, sudden loss of forward propulsion and delayed acceleration has had serious effects on handling, stability, acceleration and maintenance of speed. these conditions and risks can thereby contribute to traffic accidents, which can result in personal injury or death. thank god this has not yet happened to my family. we have come close on multiple different occasions. ford has chosen to actively conceal the defective cvt transmissions in the ford freestyles. this has put my family drivers' in danger and cost us over 3300 dollars in repairs. this was in june of 2012. now, the kistler dealership has told me repairs would be over 7300 dollars to repair with 156k miles on the vehicle (approx 46k more since the first repair). as a reasonable consumer i would expect and assume that a vehicle's transmission is safe, will function in a manner that will not pose a safety hazard and is free from defects,. i do not expect ford to fail to disclose the cvt transmission defect to me or other consumers. moreover, i do not expect ford and the kistler dealership to initially deny this defect, charge me thousands of dollars to repair it, then more than double the amount to repair again only 46k miles later. i am asking for ford to answer for this problem. please get back with me for any questions.

After starting engine, placed in reverse and vehicle suddenly surged backward while my foot was still on the brake. later, engine was periodically surging forward as i kept my foot on the brake while in rush hour traffic until the "wrench" light came on the instrument panel at which time the engine died. restarted engine and idled smoothly until i put it in drive and started lurching forward again as "wrench" light came on again. idle rpm was fluctuating between 400 to 1,000 rpm with my foot on the brake. had to keep left foot on brake with right foot on accelerator to keep engine running without bucking. moved to side of road and turned off engine to wait out traffic. restarted about 15 minutes later and drove home with no more problems, but noticed that it periodically bucks when idling so had car serviced and they said that the computer had reset itself. still does it periodically. *tr
