Problems with 2006 Ford Freestyle POWER TRAIN

I had just started the engine, a/c on,and was attempting to back out of a parking stall.the vehicle seemed to be working normal.engine temp-normal,fuel-3/4 full, no indicator lights were on, engine rpms about 750. with my foot firmly on the service brake pedal,i put the transmission into reverse.the vehicle powered backwards about 5 feet and i began to turn the vehicle towards the right.the engine speed immediately raised, but my foot was hovering above the brake pedal & not touching the accelerator pedal.i stomped hard on the brake pedal to avoid hitting the vehicles parked beside & directly behind me.the vehicle stopped after powering backwards another 5 feet after applying the service brakes.no collision occured.i immediately looked at the dashboard and saw the rpms were at 2250+ while trans still in reverse & service brakes fully applied.i shutoff the engine while trans in reverse and then moved trans into park. a loud click was heard coming from the hood area and the vehicle lunged forward. *tr

I purchased a 2006 ford freestyle in april 2014. it has been a great truck except for the following problem: when driving at highway speed, the transmission will suddenly drop into low gear. the transmission will not go into any other forward gear without shifting into 'park', shutting down the engine, waiting a minute, and re-starting the engine. this can be quite dangerous on a fast moving freeway! in normal city driving, the truck runs fine. on long road trips, the transmission may do this dozens of times before reaching my destination. it is especially a problem going up long grades. it can also occur when overtaking a slow-moving vehicle, decelerating, and then speeding back up to pass. i checked a forum for freestyle problems and there have been several instances of others having the same problem. some paid hundreds of dollars to have their transmissions fixed, but the problem persists. i talked to a ford mechanic about the problem and he said that the freestyle (made only in 2006 and 2007) has been known to have problems with the cvt transmissions. he said there is a faulty temperature sensor in the housing of the transmission that sends a problem signal to the computer that 'locks the transmission into 'limp' mode so the driver can pull over'. to replace it requires buying the housing because the sensor is part of the housing. but, the company that made the part for ford went out of business in 2008. so no part has been available. i was told that ford had contracted another company to make the part in december 2014 and the part would be available in june 2015. in june, i checked, and now the part will not be available until the end of 2015. i complained on the ford website and they deny any problems with the transmissions so no recall has been issued. i can't use the cruise control because the transmission will go off and the high rpm can blow the engine.

Loss of power with no warning while traveling at 50 mph. "wrench" indicator light comes on representing "throttle body" according to owner's manual. indicator light for "traction control" also comes on. car is towed to nearby auto mechanic. next day i am told the "megatronics unit" must be replaced at a cost of $1,775.00 (includes recalibrating). one is located at a dealer in charlotte, n.c. they are on back order through ford. after the unit is installed, it is determined that the transmission is no longer functional and needs replacing. according to the mechanic, there was no way to know this until the megatronics unit was replaced. in other words, it cost $1,775.00 to find out it would take another $4,500.00 - $6,000.00 (rebuilt vs. new) to repair. that is more than the value of the car, if it was in working order. the car is less than eight years old and averaged less than 10,000 miles per year. it has been driven primarily by my wife, a retired school teacher, and most of the mileage has been local driving. the $1,775.00 part can't be returned because it is now considered "used", even though it has not moved one foot. i own a car that has no trade-in value and will most likely end up in a junk yard. the mechanic tells me that even if i were willing to spend the money to repair it, no one who specializes in transmissions wants to touch it because they worry about a repeat of these problems and don't want to issue any warranty with it. i have had to purchase a vehicle with absolutely nothing of value to trade. my wife and i are both in out 60's and certainly did not anticipate having to make a purchase of this magnitude at this point in our lives. i don't think it is a stretch to expect the vehicle to have gotten well over 100,000 miles before anything close to a problem of this magnitude occurring. instead, it got 74,342. *tr

As outlined in the class action lawsuit against ford filed in california, our car experienced a "sudden and unexpected cvt transmissions failure". this resulted in a "sudden loss of forward propulsion and delayed acceleration" when merging onto a 40 mph street. the check engine light, the wrench light and the traction control dash lights came on and the engine experienced high rpm's with little forward movement. we took the problem to authorized ford dealer who recommended repairs to the computer system costing us $2,000 even though it knew about the systemic transmission defect the ford general manager stated in a phone call this morning (6 13 2014) his service department has had two other ford freestyles in their shop presenting the exact issues as our car. following ford protocol resulted in a "final" diagnosis of transmission failure. point being, the local ford dealership admittedly had prior knowledge of the cvt transmission failures yet did not relay that information to us at the onset of the systemic defect. the vehicle sits in our driveway. it is not safe to operate as we elected not to replace the defective cvt transmission at a quoted cost of $5,000 plus installation. *js

Thursday, november 29,2013 i noticed a noise in my engine compartment. i took it to my mechanic he said it was the transmission and to call the dealer. we called the dealer they said to get a transmission it would be a remanufactured one using our old one for the core and would be about 48 hundred dollars however they can't get one. i now have a car i can't drive or sell. *tr

I filed a complaint about 2 years ago regarding my vehicle lunging forward. i received a notice to bring my car the ford dealership for throttle body repair. since taking my vehicle into the dealership for repairs i have noticed that my vehicle is hesitating. when you press on the accelerator the vehicle does not increase speed more than 8 to 10 miles when you push the accelerator to the floor. i have taken this vehicle to 2 different dealership that specialize in ford product but not the ford dealership. i have been told that my transmission needs to be rebuilt and i was told at another dealership that it was in desperate need of replacing or rebuilding. i feel as though ford knows the problems that the owners are facing and need to step their game up. i have another year and a half before this vehicle will be paid in full. i feel at this point that ford assembled all of these vehicles and should be held accountable for selling these lemons. when you start looking at complaint after complaint from different customers all over the world then you know there is a bigger problem. i feel all the money that i have invested and still investing to save my credit has turned me away from ford vehicles of any kind at this point. *tr

We are a california couple in our 70s, living on social security and a teachers pension. in 2012 we bought a 2006 ford freestyle for $11,000. it was in immaculate condition and had just 26,000 miles. after less than two years and an additional 20,000 miles, the transmission failed suddenly and completely. the total mileage of 46,000 is barely three-quarters of the way to the first recommended servicing, factory-set at 60,000 miles. we were told by a repair shop that there are no rebuilt units available for this transmission and a local transmission expert refuses to work on these units, a cvt' (constant velocity transmission) and the only option is a new replacement that costs $5,000 for the part and $1,000 to install. a little research revealed many cases of early failure for these transmissions (used in the 2005 through 2007 model years), even very early failures for replacement transmissions. it also revealed a class-action lawsuit over failures of these transmissions. such common failures seems to make it inadvisable to install a transmission salvaged from a wrecked car. how has ford dealt with the problem? the local dealer has been friendly and helpful, but we did not buy the car from them, we are no't the original owners and the six-years of warranty had just expired' and it is no't a dealer issue, it is a matter of the poor quality of the manufacturer's part. so how has the ford corporate office dealt with the problem? they offered x-plan pricing and credit for two monthly payments if we would buy a new ford. we met with a salesman, and he said he could make a better offer simply through the flexibility he has in pricing. informed of this and given an offer to share in our loss by selling a replacement transmission for $1,500, a ford corporate office representative said they would not budge. *tr

My engine blew and had to be rebuilt. i then had to have the transmission rebuilt 2 months after getting it back. the inner tie rod ends went out. there was a number of .there things that went wrong at the same time. it was as though the vehicle started falling apart at 120000 miles. *tr

I recently purchased a 2006 ford freestyle. shortly thereafter, my vehicle was diagnosed with a growing problem with the cvt transmission. as i started inquiring about repairs, i found that most places, including some ford dealerships, could not or would not do this repair. this was due to everything from having tried to repair these and the repairs not working (even when done by ford's guidelines), parts not being available from ford, and the list goes on. in doing more research, i discovered this is a very common issue with these ford cvt transmissions, even to the point of ford acknowledging the issue through tsb's. however, in all of ford's recognition of the issue, there has been no recall to actually fix the issue. this has put me in the position of countless other owners, facing a steep repair of many thousands of dollars for an issue that ford knows about but will not take responsibility for. *tr

Was going home after visiting with a friend and on way back was driving normal speed limit on i75 north (65mph) when all of a sudden the car would not accelerate and ac started blowing warm, the wrench light came on. the car was still running but very poorly. i had to carefully get over into the right lane and drove on the side of the interstate to get off at the visible off ramp just a few yards away. i was able to get the car up to a mcdonalds at the top of the ramp. i shut it off and decided to go inside and eat. about 25~30 minutes later, i decided to try and start the car and see what would happen, the car started right up, everything worked as normal, no warning lights at all. we drove it the last 2 hours home without any concerns. we ran a code tester on the car the next day and nothing came up. that was in september 2013. almost a year later, this september 2014, i had the same thing happen again, but i do not remember the light coming on this time and it happened after only driving the car 6 miles to my local home depot. again once i got back into the car after about 45 minutes, everything seemed to be operating normal again. this is normally my wife's grandson mobile, she now says that there is opportunities with surging while stopping and taking off and the ac is blowing warm when she is at stops or not driving with engine running. i read a couple forums about why the ac may be acting up but this doesn't explain the limp mode thing and the new surging going on. we have no engine or warning lights at all. i will tell you i test drove it after her concerns and they are real, the surging thing is a concern and i don't like her driving it. at a local garage guys said it sounds like its that "ford's" problem, but don't see recall for this vehicle....is this a ford problem that is known? i can't spend a lot of money trying to find the root cause. *tr

As of this part friday, i had the motor mount torque insert replaced. there was bad shifting, lunging & loss of gas mileage for the past few months. i have noticed that this was not happening in the cooler weather; just since it has gotten hotter & having to run the a/c on maximum. the car was lunging by itself in reverse & drive. drove it home; did great. ran alot of errands today & the emission/transmission light came on; vehicle stalled, no compression. a bit of whining (transmission issues) i will get it into the mechanic monday a.m., but from previous comments from other owners, this is a common problem. again, definitely not a good thing w/a 2 1/2 year old in the vehicle almost all the time. checked to see if any recalls & ford says nothing. looks as though the last update was in the end of 2012. maybe ford is going to pull this together & take care of business. this is a great car other than that. *tr

Experienced a drop in throttle response going through a curve/intersection and reduced power...pulled to the side of the road...switched off ignition and restarted. *tr had experienced the same situation over the past three months and found a ford recall to clean the throttle body and reprogram the controller. dealership now tells me that the repair is to replace the throttle body at a cost of over $800

I own a 2006 ford freestyle which i purchased in 2006. i have had some past experiences with what appeared to be the transmission slipping when mileage was around 50,000. the wrench light would come on, but then the car would resume as normal and the wrench light would go off. i was told by the dealership service department, that unless they were in the auto when it happened or the light was on, they could not run a code or determine the cause. my freestyle now has 108,000 miles and this morning i was on the highway to work, the transmission slightly slipped and then when i accelerated, i had no power. i was able to roll to a side road for safety. i turned my auto off and then on, put it in drive and reverse and neither gears worked. my automobile would not move. i have talked to two ford dealership service departments and they tell me it will be around $6000 (give or take) to replace the transmission. they said that no one will "repair it" due to the "cvt" transmission. i had to have it towed and missed work because of this. ford should pay, not their customers. i want restitution. ford needs to recall these automobiles and replace the transmission with one that they know is not faulty. they also need to pay for a rental auto while my transmission is being replaced with a new/reliable/safe one. i am very upset and would like to know where to go from here. i have taken great care of my automobile, regular maintenance done regularly and it looks new. had i of been on the interstate, i could have been in a serious accident. *tr

My car was making a strange noise in park, when put into drive the noise would stop. sounded like a airplane while idling. when i asked to have it checked while having oil changed, was told it was transmission noise and due to cvt transmission and will not effect the performance of transmission until i feel it slipping gears. have seen that ford has had this problem with this vehicle and wonder why they haven't stood behind their product and repaired this issue. i am a widowed mom and don't have thousands of dollars lying around to have this fixed. bought this vehicle for being able to help transport my sons boy scout troop to their events and afraid to do so with concern of braking down this scouts in my car. wish they would fix this issue so customers would not put out pocket to fix, they know the problem exists fix it. *tr

My ford freestyle 2006 with 30,000 k miles had a transmission failure with my daughter driving on an 5 lane inter-state highway when it failed and lost power. my daughter had to navigate 3 lanes of traffic as the car was stopping. thank god she got safely off the roadway. she could have been killed. after reading the internet i am convince that ford's design is faulty and ford is not taking any responsibility for correcting. *tr

The vehicle was idle while i was waiting to enter into traffic and it lunged forward multiple time. i shut the car off and when i started it again it did not respond when i placed it in drive or reversed. after that it seems to lunge forward whenever it wants to without any reason. i started to read about related issues on line and how owners were contact about this possible issue but i was not. this is a very big safety issue. *tr

In ca for funeral, check engine (wrench) light came on. we brought the car to ken grody ford in buena park. they at first said transmission could be fixed, but during next diagnostics, the transmission froze. rebuilt trans ordered from ford. car left there, we rented one and came home. our daughter drove the car home on 7/3/13, got 300 miles in to trip, transmission locked up, no power. towed to berge ford in mesa, az where we live. a second transmission put in. several incidents of leakage, then picked car up on 8/1/13, got one mile on freeway, smoke coming out of back end. very dangerous situation now twice for this transmission. it is now 8/6/13, car still not fixed. *tr

The vehicle makes a lound rumbling noise at low speed. dealer (lindsay ford of silver spring, md) has had the car for 2 days and did not diagnose or repair. tech says it's because of transmission going bad but they are not sure. they say they are unable to provide parts or service and car may break down anytime. *tr

I recently bought a 2006 ford freestyle. 2 weeks after i bought it i started having problems with it lunging. this is very scary. it also has issues with power fading in and out. i feel that my family is being put at risk as well as the public. these transmissions need to be recalled. i am deathly afraid i am going to hit someone or something when it lunges. i don't think it's fair to be forced to drive a car that causes you to be stressed out. this issue seems to be very widespread across the country as i have seen hundreds and hundreds of posts of consumers who are very upset that nobody is doing anything about these issues. ford needs to be held accountable for this. they know there are problems but do nothing about it. please help!!!! *tr

We were at a stand still in traffic leading to the off ramp, a vehicle came speeding down the on ramp and by his own admission was not paying attention. he then rammed into the back of our vehicle and hit us so hard that it triggered a multi car crash, 6 vehicles in all. during repairs of the vehicle we were told that the engine was experiencing idle surge. it was also noted that this was not due to the vehicle accident. we paid out of pocket some 1,700.00 and we continue to have the same issues. the ford dealership has not and will not correct the problem. ford is responsible for this repair and i would like to see some action taken on their part. i called ford corporate office and was told despite my vehicle being included in the 2005-2007 recall my particular vin number is not included in that lot. not good customer service. *tr

The freestyle cut out on the interstate. luckily it was in the breakdown lane and no cars were coming. an 8 year old was in the car as well. after spending $1200 on repairs the freestyle still leaks, and is having the same problems with cutting out, leaking into the car and all the lights coming on. we have spent over $1200 to fix, and the car still has the same problems. the dealership wants us to spend another $1000, and they can not guarantee that will fix the problem, as another freestyle here in boone has had the same issues. *tr

I tried starting the car and when i went to put it into reverse to back up the transmission did not engage. it suddenly lurched backwards and the same thing happened when i put the car into drive. there is about a 10 second delay and then it lurches. one time while driving the car, it slipped out of gear and started to rev the rpm over 3000 it tried to engage the gear but then stalled in traffic. i took the car to the ford dealership and they hooked it up to a diagnostic machine. they said that there is a delay in building up pressure to go into gears. they said that they did not know what was causing it but they suspected the high pressure filter needed to be changed. that cost was 800 dollars. after changing the filter there was no change. i no longer feel safe driving this car and don't know what to do about trying to repair it. ford said that you can get used transmission from junkyards but this seems to be a common issue. i did bring it in to the dealership in january to have the throttle body cleaned for the recall. i'm highly agitated that ford will not stand by their vehicle. *tr

I purchased a used 2007 ford freestyle w/ one previous owner about 6 months ago with 110k miles. since then i may have added 5k miles or so, if not less. i took it in yesterday to the local ford dealer because of some issues with the care not accelerating at times and wrench light coming on. i would also hear the care rev up unexpectedly while reversing and doing other odd things that made me uncomfortable. they said i need a new transmission. parts alone would be $6k. this is unacceptable. *tr

A few weeks ago i was backing out of the driveway in the morning (it was cold & frosty). when i put the vehicle into reverse it started to back out but then wouldn't accelerate. i pushed harder on the accelerator and it revved and finally went. the car felt off' while driving (shaky & not fully under control-like riding a bicycle when the chain slips but isn't completely off). the wrench light turned on but once i'd arrived at the destination & stopped & restarted the vehicle it seemed fine and the wrench light turned off. last week i was again backing out and the vehicle would not accelerate, i pushed down more on the accelerator and it skipped / lurched back (almost hitting another vehicle). this happened twice more, both scary but manageable once i was able to turn the vehicle off and on again. then this morning it happened again with the revving noise and poor and jumpy acceleration but after restarting, the 'check engine' light came on and has continued to be lit. so far i have only encountered the lurching and lack of acceleration occurring while in reverse, though it's continued once going forward until i can pull over and restart the vehicle. until i can restart the vehicle it feels shaky and on the verge of dying, especially when at idle in traffic or red lights. i did a lot of research before purchasing the freestyle. i chose it because it was one of the highest rated and 'safest' suvs with 3rd row seats - reviewed by the iihs, car-seat.org and other organizations. i would not have purchased a freestyle if these problems were well known to me at the time. we will look at the throttle body as recommended by other owners on this and other sites and i only hope that solves the problem. in the meantime i am afraid of the lack of acceleration and lurching problem happening around other vehicles and people so i am driving backroads where possible. *tr

My 2006 ford freestyle is stalling out at low speeds and not responding to acceleration. the wrench warning icon comes on the dashboard when the worse problems are occurring. it is not the throttle bottle which has been replaced and been reprogrammed. the mechanic showed 4 error lights regarding the cvt transmission. the ford dealership was unable to diagnose or fix the problem. currently there is a mass class action lawsuit being filed in california, it is not a unique of isolated occurrence. *tr

This car is absolute junk and extremely unsafe! yes, i've had the same throttle body issue as everyone else, and after i took it to ford for the "warranty" it got worse! instead of surging at low speeds, now the entire vehicles pulses...lights, engine, instrument panel, etc. at 60mph the engine will randomly sputter an the rpm's will shoot way up - every light goes bright/dim, the engine idle goes up and down, the air conditioning pulses and eventually turns itself on and off - then suddenly the instrument cluster goes nuts with the speedometer going from my speed down to 0 and back up, wrench and all kinds of other lights flashing, charging system errors - it's insane. i took it back to ford and they said it was a loose battery cable (!) and of course after i picked it up it did the exact same stuff going back home. now it appears i need to replace all 6 coils and the computer for about $1500 - this thing is only worth $3500 at this point and i still owe $9000 - it's a nightmare. also having the transmission issues - doesn't want to go when you first put it into gear and kind of hops at low speeds - i don't even know how much that will cost. i have two small kids and depend on this vehicle to get me to work and get my family where we need to go an i'm scared every time i get in the thing...with so many of these having the exact same problems i really don't understand how ford execs can live with themselves and not replace these failing parts. someone is going to get killed, if they haven't already - i'm desperately trying to find a way to unload this thing! *tr

The problem im having is that as the car goes 20-25 mph it complete stops and the wrench light goes on. it happened to me a few times on the highway at a normal high speed it complete went off. it sure has been a nightmare. now i cant even take the family with me cause im scare to put them at risk. the ford dealer did not fix the problem im at the point that i don't know what to do or who to call . every number i call its an operator and the recording hangs up on me after a few times. i had a recall letter that was send to me but the repair dept at the ford dealer don't want to give it back. i just hope the nhtsa can help me in some way . i was told that the problem im having has to do with the throttle body . *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle would sporadically accelerate with the illumination of the wrench warning icon. additionally, the engine rpms would fluctuate and the vehicle would lose power. the contact would turn the engine off and on to stop the failure. also, the contact stated that the transmission was failing and would cause the vehicle to hesitate when the contact was attempting to accelerate. the accelerator would be depressed with force in order for the vehicle to respond. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the throttle body was replaced however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who advised that the throttle body and the accelerator sensor would need replacing. the accelerator sensor was not repaired because the part was not available however, the throttle body was replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 85,000.

Our vehicle was cruising at interstate speeds when it attempted to accelerate due to an incline in the road. suddenly the vehicle wrench light along with the anti slip light came on and the engine rpm's increased but the vehicle did not accelerate. i took the car off cruise and applied the gas and received the same results, high rpm but no acceleration. the car would not accelerate no matter what i did. we eventually pulled off the highway and stop at a gas station where we turned the car off and fueled up. after leaving the gas station we have not experienced the issue since. we took it to our mechanic the next day who said we needed to replace the transmission for about $5000. after doing research i have found out the many ford freestyle owners have had to replace their transmissions along with replacing the electronic throttle control (which ford eventually placed a recall on). we have had the etc repaired but the transmission being shot is unacceptable. *tr

On february 11th i had the recall done that reflashed computer and cleaned throttle body. the 12th and 13 it was unseasonably warm and the vehicle ran great. on the 14th the vehicle would not move at all. the temp was below 15 degrees. i could not drive my car for a month. when the temps went up into the 20's the car ran fine. i called the dealer to report the problem and was informed that the recall could only be completed once. on march 7th i cleaned the throttle body myself and found a ring of carbon around the butterfly. after cleaning the car was running good again. this was less than 400 miles after the recall had been completed. the symptoms of the jerking have gone away with the cleaning. the continuous problem seems to be the engine and malfunction light will come on and the vehicle reduces power and speed. seems to be at lower temperatures. yesterday it was 20 out and it did this. i have inspected the air and vacuum hoses to the throttle body and cannot find any loose, or broken. i have sprayed around throttle body gaskets while vehicle is running and can find no vacuum leaks. i don't think this is completely a throttle body issue. i believe the cvt transmission is to blame. in november i had the transmission fluids and sump filter changed. i did this because of the complaints of early transmission failure. usually the failure occurs when vehicle is under load, ie going up hills etc. and appears to be temperature related. *tr

All of the sudden my rpms were surging really high while i was going slow i could only go about 20 mph with the rpms at 5! then my car would shoot forward and shut off. i had my throttle body cleaned under the recall and then the next day my car wouldn't move at all! it turns on but doesn't no go anywhere and when you put it in gear it shoots forward and shuts off again! the throttle body cleaning is obviously not the issue! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled while the contact was driving 30 mph. the vehicle would not accelerate over 10 mph. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic test and the contact was advised that the transmission was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 59,500.

This is a follow up complaint from earlier. i had to replace the transmission a month after buying my freestyle. almost $4000! i have videos of the cars rpms surging as i am driving it. not a safe car - how many complaints before a ford recall is made? please tell me someone does not have to get hurt or die first! *tr

I was sitting in the drive-thru at mcdonald's when the car suddenly lunged forward almost hitting a pedestrian who was crossing in front of me to go into the store. my foot was on the break the whole time. the car lunges sporadically for no rhyme or reason. *tr
