We have classified the 83 complaints from 2006 Ford Freestyle about FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE into the following categories.
2006 ford freestyle limited_car lunges forward when sitting in traffic and you must quickly slam the brakes to stop. this happens suddenly without warning. my car also dies and i must restart, then the wrench light comes on, and the car barely accelerates. this happens more when it's real hot and the a/c is on. i will not let me wife or kids in the car until this is resolved. *tr
When placed in reverse or drive vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated. this happens even when driver's foot is on the brake petal and usually when a/c is on. typically happens when the car is first started and placed into gear but will happen even if car has been running a while, stopped, and changed into a different gear.
My 2006 ford freestyle sel accelerates on its own without pushing on the gas pedal. it mainly happens when i am pulling into or backing out of a parking space or driveway or have been sitting at a light or sitting with the car running. this has been happening off & on since i bought the car march of 2008. it wouldn't happen often at first but now it is becoming more frequent. when i took the car to my mechanic back in june for an ac problem it happened to him. he is an asc certified mechanic, but does not have any diagnostic machines in his shop. i decided to research the problem before taking it to the dealer & was surprised to see how many other people have posted the same problem. not to mention being a single parent i really cant afford an arm & a leg that dealer normally charges. not to mention still making a hefty car payment. *tr
The vehicle surges in forward and reverse without warning. this occurs randomly; typically at least hourly when driving in-town. i have read that ford says the problem is the throttle body. *tr
2006 ford freestyle, throttle body assem. sticking and lurching. creates a very dangerous driving situation as the vehicle will rev unexpectanly, at lights-signs in parking lots etc., loss of power on a busy freeway!!!, throttle body backlog for up to 6 months so car owner is forced to either drive or park. *tr
Throttle body/transmission numerous incidents of 2006 ford freestyle surging while idling. dangerous in traffic as the brakes would have to be held down in order to not hit car in front of you. transmission failed going down expresssway at 65 miles per hour with 3 grandchildren in car. car had to be towed 350 miles home. in addition to all of this, my in-laws have the same type vehicle and are now currently having the same problem. with the current online compaints, this doesn't surprise me. ford knows there is a problem with this transmission and discontinued using it in later model freestyles. i think ford should be held responsible for selling a vehicle with defective transmission and throttle body. to replace the transmission would cost 5,000 to 6,000 dollars which is half the price of the car. this is totally unfair for loyal ford customers to have deal with. this would be our 41st year of owning only ford vehicles and will be our last. there are too many of these incidents being reported for nothing to be done. thankfully no crash or injury but i suspect that the latter is what it will take to finally have this issue investigated. *tr
Daughter was driving car in chico ca i was in passenger seat. 100 degree temps and the air conditioner was operating at high setting. she was slowly rolling forward into a parking space covering the brake when the car lurched forward as though she had stepped on the gas. contacted the dealer by phone today and he assured me that there were no service bulletins concerning this issue. he said because no check engine light came on that it probably would not show up on a computer check. i will be stopping by tomorrow to have them diagnose the problem. *tr
2006 ford freestyle, vehicle surges suddenly by, mainly at low speed when parking or in heavy traffic. dangerous when in heavy traffic or trying to park as unexpected surge can cause accident if brakes is not applied in time. understand now from research that this is a common problem with this model ford, caused by faulty throttle body assembly.. this could cause serious injury at intersections with heavy pedestrian traffic as sudden surge can move vehicle into someone or something unexpectedly. *tr
I was in myrtle beach summer of 2010 when i was backing my vehicle out of a parking space it lunged back almost causing a wreck. then when i went forward did the same stalled. changed fuel filter and everything. about 1 month later did it again. i seems to do it when the temperature outside is warm. this is very scary and not sure what has to happen for ford to recall. i guess someone has to die and they have to be sued. *tr
Engine surges/lurches at idle. occurs intermittently, but is becoming more frequent as vehicle ages. nothing done to correct yet. *tr
My 2006 ford freestyle has unintended acceleration. it occurs whenever the car is warmed up and you are shifting from park to drive or reverse. it has been occurring for 3 months. ford says it's a known problem with the throttle body which is on national backorder. this should be a recall! i've read that this is happening on most ford freestyles and five hundreds with the 3.0l engine. *tr
Engine stalls out at highway speed. happened when we first got the car several times in 2008, dealer fixed something after two tow-ins, 2 years later same thing. dealer claims cannot find anything wrong, no service bulletins. i suggest the car is unreliable for my wife and disabled son, may need to get a more reliable car. they agree with me! they suggest throttle body could be bad but it is real expensive and may not fix the problem anyway. i do 10 minutes of internet research and find that ford has a known throttle body problem with the exact symptoms we have had now for 3+ years and a major supplier problem (and long loaner car expenses while finding part!). first, why has ford not recalled this problem? second, is it ethical to tell an owner to just keep driving the car even though it will break down, as they told me to do. this is a safety problem! (sudden deceleration with no power to engine, brakes and power steering as it did on i-45 last thursday leaving my wife and disabled son stranded in the middle lane of the freeway). third, is ford going to make this right? *tr
2006 ford freestyle has sudden surges going slow in forward and reverse. the car has stalled twice and the wrench light has come on. i am concerned that someone can be injured if these surges were to happen in a parking lot. *tr
2006 ford freestyle frequently lunges forward when brake is applied or at low speeds. wrench light came on during several occurrences (diagnostics codes p061b and 75574 were found) air cleaner box replaced; within one week the vehicle was experiencing the lunging problems again. sometimes i can stop the car and restart it and wrench light goes out. problems are intermittent and so far has not occurred during shop visits but has occurred within minutes of leaving garage. although no accidents, i do not feel safe driving the vehicle. *tr
Vehicle lunges at a stop or at low speeds (under 5mph). problem seems to be worse with extreme temps. outside (0-30 f. & 85-100 f). vehicle will sometimes stall when this occurs and brake is applied to stop vehicle. there is no indication when this will happen. problem seems to come and go randomly.
My 2006 ford freestyle lunges forward. it was several weeks from the first time this occurred to the second time, but now it is doing it almost all of the time. when it is hot outside and the engine is warm the throttle has a mind of it's own. it seems to happen most frequently when parking such as shifting from park to drive, park to reverse, or drive to reverse, but have also had it happen when stopping at an intersection. the vehicle just tries to run away with itself, the limited power light comes on and a couple of times it has stalled when this occurred. the problem is the throttle body. had the codes ran at the ford service department at my local dealer and they said they have seen over 20 cases of this same issue. i live in a very rural area and i didn't even think there were that many freestyle's in this area. i was told by the dealer to file a complaint, and they maybe they would recall the defective part. i believe this part needs recalled as a matter of safety. last week i almost hit a man in a grocery store parking lot as i put the vehicle in reverse to back out of a parking spot. he was walking behind the vehicle and i had my foot on the brakes but when the car decided to throttle by itself the braked did give a little and the man proceeded to use vulgar language and some sign language. *tr
I purchased my 2006 ford freestyle in december 2009. as soon as the weather got warmer i noticed that when parking, backing up, or trying to stop, the vehicle would surge as if i still had my foot on the accelerator. soon it also started surging/sputtering when i first started out and would occasionally stall, twice in heavy traffic. i took the vehicle to the ford dealership to discover that the throttle body position sensor doesn't work properly & that all freestyles were having the same problem. i was shocked to find that a new unit could be put in but was not covered as a recall and was going to cost $1000. as a single mom, that was just impossible. luckily my disabled father was previously a mechanic and was able to use carb cleaner to clean the sensor and temporarily stop the problem. since then, every spring the problem comes back and i have to have the throttle body unit cleaned several times before winter. another problem i have with this vehicle is that the brakes wear out unusually quickly. i don't know if it's because of having to fight the throttle position sensor to stop the car, or if it's a flaw in the design of the brake system. i do know that when it starts to feel like they are wearing out i have to replace them asap because the more they get worn the faster they wear out, if that makes sense. something i've just recently noticed is that the lights (interior, exterior, display, all of them) have been almost blinking...getting brighter/dimmer and at the same time my a/c blows harder/softer, like they are surging as well. upon further examination i found that the top and bottom driver's side motor mounts have cracked/rotted bushings. ford should absolutely replace these throttle bodies without question; my children ride in my freestyle every day and one close call is one too many. i want this fixed once and for all. *js
My 2006 ford freestyle has had a surging problem at low speeds since we bought it with 15000 miles on it in 2006. even with your foot on the brake and not on the accelerator the care accelerates on its own in forward and reverse. we took the car to the ford dealer in tucson and they fixed the problem by replacing the throttle body for 1000.00 at our expense. on one occasion may 1 2010 the car surged forward hitting our garage causing damage to the car. there should be a recall on this car. *tr
2006 ford freestyle sudden acceleration- a few months ago my 2006 ford freestyle began accelerating, usually going from park to reverse, even while my foot was on the brake. i have to press down on the brake hard to keep the car from lurching forward. once in drive, there are no problems. no shops have been able to identify a problem even though the wrench light comes on and the car has stalled a couple of time. it never seems to have the problem at the repair shop. internet research indicates this is a throttle body problem that ford is well aware of but hasn't taken action on to educate consumers or mechanics. i've learned to compensate by always starting the car with my foot firmly on the brake, but i won't let anybody else drive my car. desperate to get repaired. this problem is rampant based on internet complaints. in fact, the last mechanic said he had another ford freestyle with the same problem which is what prompted me to get on the internet. why isn't ford doing something before someone gets hurt? *tr
How long are you going to look into the ford freestyle throttle body problem??? it has been years...why are you waiting so long to recall these cars.. iam sure this problem will either hurt or kill somebody. *tr
I have a 2006 ford freestyle that lunges when you put it in gear. it does it all the time. its worse when the air cond. is on. i had an accident in a parking lot. i have quit driving the car till i can afford to take in to a dealer. from what i've read this is a common problem with freestyles. *tr
Vehicle surged rapidly while in drive with no input from gas pedal and without warning. has occurred several times. this seems to be a common problem for this vehicle yet ford has not issued a recall. replacement parts not available. (throttle body) serious safety issue. *tr
2006 ford freestyle we change the accelerator body it lurched forward and it was dangerous almost hit a few cars in traffic we were terrified of it would not ride the kids in it and the transmission started making a weird ssssssssssss noise few months ago and now its more of a rrrrrrrrrrr loud sound everybody turns to look when we drive by were gonna take it to the ford dealer today we will probably pay up the was because you wont do anything about this problem you know exists as always with everything the corporations comefirst they have the money you should be ashamed this is afamily vehicle it has a third row seat kids ride in it still you do nothing .and as your first questions indicate no deaths no crashes not your problem right.national safety what was that again ya right ,should be national lets take care of the car manufacturer with deep pockets bearue. this is a defect and you know it the accelerator body and the cvt trans. thousands of people have the same problem yet you do nothing guess we will have to do a class action we have to do it ourselves as always. *tr
While trying to park vehicle or when vehicle is stopped & engine running. accelerated when throttle was not depressed. dealer re programmed the computer. this did not solve the problem. *tr
I own a ford 2006 freestyle that accelerates by itself when in reverse. the engine light came on and the dealer said it was a failed throttle body. this part failed in almost every ford freestyle for 2005/6/7 since ford was mfg. defective throttle body parts. the part is now on national backorder, and there are thousands of people that reported almost getting killed on the highway because this defective part can cause the engine to go dead or the car to accelerate out of control. there is no way to get the part until december, and ford does not have it on recall. my dealer, maroone ford, expects me to pay $950.00 for their defective part, which they don't even have and can't get until after september. in the meantime, i have post traumatic stress disorder from being in 2 car accidents. i bought the ford freestyle because i was told it is a safe car. i fear for my life and the life of anyone that gets in the car with me now. i have no other car to drive. i am very worried and upset. i have been sending letter to ford corp. offices, but no response so far. *tr
I own a 2006 ford freestyle which had a throttle body issue. the issue caused the engine to accelerate when the transmission was engaged in drive or reverse and the brake is pressed. the acceleration also happened while driving on the highway on one occasion as i began to slowdown in traffic. as a result of the failure, one of the problem lights illuminated, it was the wrench shaped light indicating an issue. the issue occurred almost daily. the problem was remedied by replacing the throttle body, after a four-month" backordered" wait. *tr
2005 ford freestyle car attempted to accelerate while changing from reverse to drive in parking lot got car to go after driving a few blocks car failed to accelerate from a red light . an investigation will reveal this to be a recurring problem with this vehicle with no corrective action from ford. *tr
Our 2006 ford freestyle surges / lunges in forward and reverse when at idle or stopped condition. was told by local ford dealership that is the throttle body and the part was very hard to get. this causes a un safe condition that could cause some one or thing to be hit. *tr
My wife and i own two 2006 ford freestyles. one has approximately 70,000 miles and the other 50,000 miles. right about the same time in april/may 2009 both vehicles started have engine problems. both were taken to ford dealership for repair -- they replaced the throttle body on both vehicles. each repair was covered by an extended warranty of 100,000 miles. the problem with the throttle body caused the engine to rev up and want to take off on its own -- even with the brake pedal pushed down. other times the engine would just shut off. either of these caused potentially dangerous situations. although neither vehicle was involved in any accident due to this factory installed equipment the potential for serious accident/injury was great. both vehicles have been repaired and are running well -- for about $200.00 dollars each for diagnostics. the old parts are no longer available. *tr
My vehicle when in gear and foot on the brake lunges forward and backwards when in reverse, causing me to almost hit 2 pedestrians and several vehicles when i am at a complete stop. this occurs daily when my vehicle is in the drive or reverse position. i have notified the ford dealership and they said it is the throttle body and the part is on backorder. this problem is very scary because i am afraid of hitting someone or something. this has been happening since i bought the vehicle in 2008 and i did take it back to the dealership where i bought it and they would do something to it and it would stop for awhile but would start doing it again and this has been like this for 2 years now. i cannot let my teenagers drive my vehicle because i am afraid they will not be able to stop the vehicle when it starts lunging forward again. *tr
While curbside at the airport my 2006 ford freestyle started to accelerate by itself. and nearly plowed into the car and pedestrians in front of me. when the acceleration subsided i repositioned my feet (left foot brake, right foot on floor) because i thought my foot was on both the brake and the accelerator. a minute or so later the car did it again, i put the car in neutral and turned it off. when my passengers were re loaded i started the car and while leaving the airport noticed the car was very sluggish. i took it to the dealer that day. after more than two days, lots of phone calls (about what might be the problem "but we're not sure") and a lot of negotiation between the dealer and the extended warranty "provider" it was determined that the electronic throttle body was the culprit but "the part was on nationwide back-order" in fact "we have another freestyle out in the back that has been waiting for a month". the tune changed considerably when the dealer found out that i was not only considering a legal path for resolution, but my wife was a "consumer cop" for the state where we live. the parts (2)were "found" in california and air-freighted to our dealer who promptly fixed both cars that day. i was charged $550+ for the repair(neither ford or the 100k mile extended warranty "provider" covered the work). it seems that others have had this exact problem too, how many does it take? does someone have to get killed or injured for some one to figure out that this type of incident can't possibly be a normal wear and tear or consumer caused problem. *tr
Vehicle lunges at idle, especially on hot days when a/c is running. almost ran over attendant at oil change location. this has occurred about 30 times since we have owned the car. the dealer has no knowledge of other freestyles with this problem, but many other freestyle owners do, as does the ford corporation.
Shortly after we purchased the car on jan 01, 2008 we began to have issues with lunging and high idling. car was taken to dealership several times before they cleaned the throttle body sensor. it was ok for a few months and started back. we took it back and they replaced the tbs and another part. car worked great for a while, but had to have the tbs cleaned again in 2011 and 2012 and is now doing the same thing again and more. now it is extreme. i work about 6 miles from home and have to stop several times to turn the car off and back on to reset the wrench that comes on in order to reset the high idle. if i don't, when i hit the gas, the rpm's go up to 4 and 5k only doing 30 mph. the check engine light is also on. i have had it checked and the error code is p0701 indicating transmission and tb issues. the car also lunges forward a great deal and i have to stay back a safe distance in order to be sure if it lunges i don't hit anyone. the issue is far beyond the throttle body sensor. it has to also do with the cvt transmission which ford knows is a lemon. please push this issue so that they will have to recall the faulty parts and protect the safety of the families in their vehicles. if i had another means of transportation i would certainly not be in this car. *tr
Vehicle is a 2006 ford freestyle limited all wheel drive...often, when idling with the transmission in drive and foot on brake, the engine rpms will increase without pressing the accelerator and the car will lunge forward until extreme pressure is applied to the brake pedal. sometimes, especially when in reverse and the car lunges as described, the car will stall after lunging and the check engine light will come on. upon restarting the engine, the car will run, but in a limited capacity with the check engine light on. stopping the car, turning the car off, and then restarting the car, clears the check engine light and the car will operate normally. this seems to occur more often when ambient temperature is around or above 90 degrees fahrenheit. since we purchased the car new in 2006, this has occurred at least 50 times. *tt
I have a 2006 ford freestyle with less than 15,000 miles. while driving north bound on interstate 75 between mile marker 101 and 128 the gas tank was punctured. what punctured the gas tank is unknown but there was a small area of "burring" and the tank cracked approx. 4 inches releasing fuel. the gas tank and liner failed by what appears to be a small impact. consequence was release of fuel (full tank). fortunately, there was no adverse outcome other than replacing the tank and fuel... the tank is being replaced. i will retain the damaged tank for further inspections. if the nhtsa would like to examine the tank please contact me and i will provide it to you. 1. normal highway driving/debris should not puncture the tank and create this unsafe condition. had the fuel ignited then serious bodily harm or death could have occurred. 2. looking at the gas tank layout there is no protection from any type of debris e.g. skid plate, fabrication materials, etc. this makes the gas tank vulnerable to puncture potentially creating an unsafe condition. 3. the tank is non self-sealing to minimize the release of fuel. 4. there is an inadequate heat shield in place to prevent fuel from reaching the exhaust and igniting. 5. there is a potential workmanship issue with the gas tanks as they may be too brittle and unable to withstand the impact as tested. as there was no indication of a collision in which ruptured the gas tank. there was also only a very small area of burring that resulted in a significant crack to the fuel tank. *nm
