We have classified the 74 complaints from 2006 Ford Freestyle about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
My mom's 2006 ford freestyle, surges forward when using the air conditioner or defroster. there has been many times it has done this almost rear ending the vehicle in front of hher.this has been going on since beet and my deceased father have own it.(2010?) her instrument panel goes bonkers now, and sometimes the car won't start and the panic alarm goes off when we get out of the car.
My car surges and the rpms move without touching the gas. it tries to throw me into traffic when at stoplights and stop signs. it tries to throw me at people when driving slowly through parking lots. i have to put my car into neutral while at stops so that my family or other family's don't die because of a malfunction that ford had with the car when they sold it. i was never told about the malfunction and they say i'm years past the warenty and 20000 miles past the warenty milage. so because my car is 20000 over i guess it's okay for my car to kill me and my children or other people?
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. while driving 45 mph, the throttle control transmission warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and powered off the engine. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the surge needed to be reprogrammed. the contact's husband called coughlin ford of johnstown at (740) 967-2086 (670 w coshocton st, johnstown, oh 43031) and was informed that the vehicle was included in an unknown recall that had been closed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 161,000.
The first week of june 2017, we were having issues with the electrical in our freestyle. the lighting would dim and brighten on and off while the car was running and there was almost a pulse in the rev of the engine. we took the vehicle into our local mechanic and had to have our alternator replaced. in july 2017, we were driving to meet with friends for breakfast and the freestyle stopped running a couple car lengths away from a major intersection. we, again, replaced the alternator and this time the battery had a dead cell and needed replaced as well. we noticed nothing to alert us to the electrical issue this time, no pulsing or change in the lighting. we have not used the freestyle much over the winter because we noticed the pulsing and light issues again and when we took it into our mechanic, they couldn't replicate the issue. we also have a second vehicle and did not need to use it much. we started it a couple of times to try and prevent any issues, but could not get it to start at all this week and when we tired to jump start it, we could only get it to run when it was hooked to our second vehicle. the freestyle was towed to the shop today and we are currently having the third alternator installed and a second battery. the mechanic is looking into the issue further, due to the number of times we have been in for these issues. we hope to find a resolution to this issue.
Problems started after the battery and alternator were changed back in november 2017. first, the battery light and check charging system went on right after the ford dealer changed the battery and alternator. we were told that the electrical output was fine despite the warning light. since then several alternators were changed by the dealer but the warning light remained and the dealer does not know how to fix this. today while driving (streets and highway) the dashboard (instrument cluster) went off and on and all gauges went to zero and back on after a while during driving. there was a kick to the engine every time this happened. my backlights went crazy (including reverse lights) while driving forward on streets/highway. turning lights were also affected. other drivers alerted me today. this is a danger to us and others. i fear the engine could eventually get affected too. there are many posts online with identical issues and ford does not appear to be willing or able to solve this.
This car has many problems. i wouldn't buy this car again. i have invested too much money for repairs. the air bag sensor keeps coming on. the car has no speed after i had the transmission replaced. the lights on dash are off and on.
The driver side passenger door seal is faulty, letting water get into the door causing it to freeze and rust. the electrical for the driver heated seat keeps malfunctioning causing it to keep breaking. the levers that flip the second and third row seating have become faulty and will no longer work. lastly, the all-wheel drive component on my vehicle stopped working while i was driving. it was during the winter and the roads were icy so it caused me to have less traction and fish tail. *tr
Safety complaint for ford freestyle 2006. the wrench and engine light appear on the dashboard and the engine goes to limp mode and the speed drops to 30 miles per hour from highway speed of 60 to 70 miles per hour with no warning other than the quick drop in speed and wrench light. driving on a highway with trucks and cars going 70 miles per hour or more is beyond dangerous and asking to get hit. we have had ford service on this car but they did not have recalls for this problem. vehicle in motion on highway. have had car towed, pulled over to breakdown lane and traveled side roads for fear of getting hit by another vehicle. please do something to ford corp to fix this problem before there is tragedy.
I will be driving and either the ac will be on or the dvd system will be in use and the consol turns black and the lights go off on the dashboard and the engine revs and sometimes it says check charging system. this happens while i am driving on the freeway. the lights will turn back on in the dashboard and then the airbag light is blinking. it is very cornering as i drive my children in this car. i am afraid it is going to happen and i will be unable to stop and either cause an accident or hurt my children and myself because of the electrical system just shutting down. this should be a recall and should be fixed by ford. it is a safety issue. this has started happening with more regularity since 1/2016
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. in addition, the contact stated that there a loud abnormal sound emitted from the vehicle. the vehicle was not able to be restarted. the vehicle was towed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 103,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle accelerated and decelerated independently as the check engine warning light illuminated. the contact also stated that when the air condition was activated, the vehicle would lunge forward. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but the failure was unable to be determined. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 150,081.
Alternator replaced by firestone three times in two weeks span, and then ford dealer changed alternator two times in two weeks span, problem remains same in the vehicle. problem appears randomly, no dash board display only battery glows when i start car.
The car completely turn off while driving on the freeway. there is also a feel of power lost on take off while.driving. and i have read there's been concerns about the throttle body malfunction.
Today (08/26/2015) while emerging into oncoming traffic my car refused to accelerate. it would never rise above 20 mph. thankfully i was down the street from my mechanic. an otherwise two minute drive took fifteen minutes of my allowing the car to just coast because it would never accelerate when i pushed on the gas. after praying and finally making to the shop, he placed the diagnostic mac of thine on it only to inform me that it is the electronic throttle body was opened. i searched for a recall or something to offset the cost but i have been unsuccessful thus far. this was a very frightening experience and thankfully one where i didn't get injured due to cars almost hitting me, running up on my bumper even with the flashers on, it's not fair that this complaint is closed. what if someone got seriously injured or even died because the car just suddenly refused to accelerate.or even began to surge out into traffic. this matter needs to be re evaluated for the safety of all the customers who own this vehicle.
Car was parked for about 10 minutes after running without issue for 20 minutes. when starting again from the parked position, car lost all power steering. within the 2.1 mile/6 minute ride that followed, the power steering never returned. checking under the hood revealed serpentine belt failed in a clean break. the car was not driven prior to replacing the belt the next day. once the belt was installed, a quick run through the system functions included running the a/c. all systems seem functional until the a/c is activated. within 3 seconds of starting a/c, observed audible motor sound followed by all power failed (full shut-down). turned off engine, removed key, waited 60 seconds, all was good until again turning on the a/c, when symptom of system failure (audible motor sound change) occurred again, a/c was turned off right away, and engine and all other systems operated as expected.
Driving down the interstate in traffic the engine stalls wrench light came on, leaving me with no power to control my speed. as my car quickly reduces speed on a major interstate i attempt to get over to the shoulder out of harms way. this is happened 4 times, the latest time our check engine light came on and stays on. p2104, p2100, p2112, and p0325 codes are present. i have seen ford has recalled 1.6 million electronic throttle body in ford escape, mercury mariner, and mercury milan vehicles with the same 3.0l engine and same electronic throttle body. all ford has to do is to list the ford freestyle as one of these recall vehicles for the etb to be repaired/replaced. this is a very scary situation to be in with children in the car and you have no power to you accelerator to get out of the way of speeding vehicles all around you!! i don't know what to do, very expensive to replace the etb. *tr
I just buy a 2006 ford freestyle and since day one i have savety problem with this car , some time the speed change with out my knowledge , it goes from 40 to 45 or try to spedd wit out me hitting on the gas . *tr everyday the car stop and turn off no matter speed i`am driving on. i went to many garage and ford dealer and they told me is a problem they having with most ford 2006 freestyle . i think for the safety of all people who using this 2006 ford freestyles with their family on borad , with their kids on board and to save a lifes we have to recall this cars . this 2006 fordstyle can`t be fixe or repair .....
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. while the vehicle was parked, the contact discovered smoke coming from the passenger side mirror without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who removed the fuse on the passenger side mirror. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 128,900.
After driving home, approximately 10 miles and speeds up to 50mph, i noticed smoke coming from the passenger side mirror. the smoke lasted a few minutes and then stopped on its own. not sure if this information is pertinent or not, but it had been raining and the dvd player was playing during the trip. *tr
Driving up to 55, engine gets to 4000 rpms, and wont shift. codes suggest bad mechatronic. *tr
Car gives codes for safemode and there is no solution. *tr
I unlocked my car to load the back. i noticed smoke coming from the passenger side mirror. there was a small fire which i put out with water. now my radio and power windows will not work and the fuse blows when we tried to replace (2x). i have not yet taken it in since it is the weekend, but i am not happy about a random fire that may have burned the entire vehicle if not noticed. *tr
On march 15, 2014 while driving my ford freestyle my car completely lost power on a 2 lane state road. i lost power steering to be able to completely get my car off the road. my child and i were broke down in the evening 40 miles from home and cars were coming fast behind us barely getting over even though i had my flashers on. i thought maybe my gas gauge stopped working and i was out of gas. by the grace of god someone we knew drove past us and came back. they went and got gas for the car thinking maybe the same issue. nothing helped to restart the car. i had it towed to a mechanic that we know. he put it on the computer and low and behold it's the throttle body that needs replaced, the same part that i understood a year before was replaced. i was told it was replaced because there was a recall. i find out later it was not replaced that it was actually a customer satisfaction program that i call is a cya for ford. the only thing required of the dealership is to clean and reprogram, something only a ford dealership can do. i thought it must be under warranty cause i had the work done less than a year. only to find out that ford just authorized a band aid fix and that my throttle body would have to now be replaced and my cost. prior to this my car almost lunged us into the side of our house as i was pulling into our carport. not the normal breaking that ford tells nhtsa in their report. i had to put all my might with both feet on the breaks to stop my car from running into our house. also not the other bs lie ford tells nhsta that the car looses power but does not loose control of power steering and breaks. on both occasions that i had a problem all of what ford tells nhtsa is not an issue is definitely a safety issue. im appalled that nhtsa has to wait for someone to die to stop believing the bs lies ford is giving them. do something.
Tl* the contact owns 2006 ford freestyle. the contact stated that she started the engine but the radio, interior lights and power windows became inoperable. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that the wiring from the side view mirrors had failed, and caused the fuse box and relay to malfunction. the contact was advised that both components would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 134,000.
I drove a short distance, less than a quarter mile and no more than 30 mph. i turned the car off, got out, walked around the rear of the car, and smelled an electrical fire. i didn't notice it at first, but gray smoke was pouring out of the passenger side view mirror. i got a fire extinguisher and by the time i was ready to use it a minute later the smoke had stopped. it was raining so maybe some water got in and shorted it out. updated 09/19/13*lj updated 12/26/2013 *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle accelerated and decelerated independently and the check engine and unknown warning lights illuminated continuously. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be cleaned and the computer needed to be updated. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 108,000.
Our steering is locking up and the battery light stays on and sometimes the doors wont latch the steering is very dangerous it locks up and you cant keep it on the road. *tr
We were at a stand still in traffic leading to the off ramp, a vehicle came speeding down the on ramp and by his own admission was not paying attention. he then rammed into the back of our vehicle and hit us so hard that it triggered a multi car crash, 6 vehicles in all. during repairs of the vehicle we were told that the engine was experiencing idle surge. it was also noted that this was not due to the vehicle accident. we paid out of pocket some 1,700.00 and we continue to have the same issues. the ford dealership has not and will not correct the problem. ford is responsible for this repair and i would like to see some action taken on their part. i called ford corporate office and was told despite my vehicle being included in the 2005-2007 recall my particular vin number is not included in that lot. not good customer service. *tr
My car lunged forward several times. at at least one point it lunged with such force that i had to put both feet on the break and push with all my might to stop it from hitting my house when pulling in to park. under ford's so called research it said normal break pressure stopped the worse case scenario, a lie. my child was in the car with me and she was very scared. i had had problems prior but was thinking maybe bad gas. i call ford to find out that i had a "recall" "customer satisfaction program" which was a one time fix to clean and reprogram the throttle body. some ford service department employees are frustrated with this issue because they know its just a "band aid" fix. it doesnt take care of the problem, which is a safety issue. my band aid fix didn't last a year. found myself broke down with my child on the road with no control a yr later. you wonder what was the problem. throttle body this time had to be replaced at full cost to me!!! my car lost power quickly and had no control with power steering etc. couldn't get my car off the road. was broke down right in a 2 lane state road with cars going 55mph. and barely getting over to keep from hitting me. another lie told by ford where they say it doesn't effect having control of your car. want to know whats odd. a family member had to take their vehicle to the dealership because their mechanic could not fix it, why? throttle body went bad, full cost to her also. i'm complaining again due to finally getting the paperwork which the dealership said they couldn't give it to me at that time and a friend whom my husband carpools to work with is having the same symptoms, when checking his vin# his car is under that csp. however his can be replaced at ford cost but we will see. they were on a highway with speed limit 70mph. very dangerous. i feel ford is failing and nhtsa is satisfied with ford's bs.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the engine rpms increased and the warning lights illuminated as the vehicle began to jerk. the vehicle would also decelerate independently while the contact was driving highway speeds. the vehicle was taken to both a dealer and an independent mechanic. the vehicle was not repaired but diagnosed with a transmission failure as well as an ecu failure. the manufacturer was note made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 133,000.
This car is absolute junk and extremely unsafe! yes, i've had the same throttle body issue as everyone else, and after i took it to ford for the "warranty" it got worse! instead of surging at low speeds, now the entire vehicles pulses...lights, engine, instrument panel, etc. at 60mph the engine will randomly sputter an the rpm's will shoot way up - every light goes bright/dim, the engine idle goes up and down, the air conditioning pulses and eventually turns itself on and off - then suddenly the instrument cluster goes nuts with the speedometer going from my speed down to 0 and back up, wrench and all kinds of other lights flashing, charging system errors - it's insane. i took it back to ford and they said it was a loose battery cable (!) and of course after i picked it up it did the exact same stuff going back home. now it appears i need to replace all 6 coils and the computer for about $1500 - this thing is only worth $3500 at this point and i still owe $9000 - it's a nightmare. also having the transmission issues - doesn't want to go when you first put it into gear and kind of hops at low speeds - i don't even know how much that will cost. i have two small kids and depend on this vehicle to get me to work and get my family where we need to go an i'm scared every time i get in the thing...with so many of these having the exact same problems i really don't understand how ford execs can live with themselves and not replace these failing parts. someone is going to get killed, if they haven't already - i'm desperately trying to find a way to unload this thing! *tr
I just got the vehicle in november 2012 and on 12/12/2012 i was driving home, the rpms started revving on it's own at speeds between 50-60 mph. i was not increasing it's gas. i made it home and stopped at the mailbox; as i let off the brake the vehicle lurched forward without me hitting the gas. then on 12/13/2012 as i was driving to work it did the same lurching coming out of park in my driveway and also at stop lights and signs. it also did the same revving and halfway to work it decided not to go over 40 mph. *tr
So many issues with the transmission not sure where to start. car was running fine yesterday and then today car had the wrench light on and lost power on the expressway at about 75 mph. turned the card off and the light was still on but at least i got partial power. the car shudders and won't shift and sometimes when i push the gas pedal nothing happens. when i am stopped car will lunge forward even with my foot on the brake. called several ford dealerships and they said they are not certified to work on that type of trans but they will replace it for 7000.00!!!! i have read so many posts with the exact same issue. why is there no recall?? i could have been killed!!! or worse my kids could have been hurt. doesn't anyone care enough to do something? *tr
I have owned my 2006 ford freestyle for just over a year....in this short time i have had it in the shop twice, both for major repairs. the first time was within weeks of my driving it off the lot; all of a sudden my car stopped recognizing the key (i guess it's a smart key with a chip embedded in it). i had to get my car towed to two dealerships before the second one had it for multiple days before getting it back. this time i was leaving the store with my daughters. i started my car and shifted the gear to drive and although my car made the accelerating sound, it went absolutely nowhere. i then tried to reverse it and put it in neutral to see what it would do. i once again had to get it towed to two different dealerships and it has now been at the current dealership for over a week and they are having to disassemble my transmission to determine what is wrong with it. i did a very generic search on google for recalls on my car and stumbled upon www.edmunds.com where there are numerous complaints about transmission issues in the 2006 and 2007 ford freestyles as well as lunging issues. my car did this once while i was driving my children to school. i was turning a curb and felt it accelerate immediately and it shocked me so that i threw on my brakes and almost caused an accident. out of this letter, i would like to see a recall on the 2006 ford freestyles for transmission issues where the manufacturer would be responsible for negligence in making these cars and repairs associated with it. this is my third car that i have owned and my first ford car. after these issues in such a short time of ownership i promise you it will be my last ford. very unhappy freestyle owner!!! My family was sitting in the car while it was parked in drive. it stalled out and made a strange sound that sounded like a problem with the transmission. i have noticed that when it is hot it seems to accelerate on its own. i have noticed that it usually happens at low speeds and reverse. i feel that this is very dangerous. i have researched this car online and have read that this has happened to quite a few of these cars. i wanted to make sure that this defect has been noted. thank you for your time. *tr
Cvt transmission bad and has to be replaced. there is a recall on the torch converter on the cvt trans but replacing it doesnt really fix the problem even though it was the cause of the original problem. once it goes bad you have bits and pieces of metal floating around all over everywhere else and the transmission just goes regardless. useless recall. also, the ac only blows cold at high speeds ....when driving slow in town it blows warm and i'm having electrical problems with the windows ....goes down when i pull up or wont go at all. *js
My complaint mirrors verbatim others related to the may 2011 investigation opened into the "lunging" at slow speeds for the 05-07 ford freestyle. the ac, hot temps, & lunging. one occurrence traveling 60mph & began to "stall out" & slow on major highway with three children in car. any pressure on fuel pedal no result. busy traffic, could only travel max 35-40mph. put flashers on & struggled to make it to repair shop. turned off ac in 100 degree heat to get any kind of response from engine. i was worried & feared for mine & my children's safety. vehicle would barely accelerate thru intersection after stopping for red light. finally made it to shop. vehicle was placed on machine. codes appeared: p061b alter fuel control module error, p2106 throttle actuator forced limited. took vehicle to ford house & explained issues as well as codes from previous shop. was told would be $100 for ford to hook up for a dx. if the codes i had were same, would cost est $800 to repair. as mom of 3 & who drives great distances for work, this repair asap. have had many occasions if not had foot firmly on brake the vehicle would've caused a wreck at stop light, pulling into, out of parking lots, etc. car literally drives itself in d/r at 10mph with no acceleration at all after placing in d/r. on 8-12-12 was in drive thru line & car lunged at high rate of speed forward after barely lifting foot off brake. came mm from slamming into vehicle in front. put car in p & the vehicle died. wrench/engine light came on. turned engine off, turned ac off & restarted the car. i can only imagine what would've happened if this had occurred at a stop light in a busy intersection? this issue is a fatality waiting to happen. this cannot be a fluke random issue if you have rec'd 238 prior complaints regarding the exact same issue. i urge nhtsa to place a recall, if for the only reason to save lives. *tr updated 08-03-12 *bf updated 09/07/2012 *js

Summary: i was putting gas in my car, as i entered the car after fueling, i was talking to my mother for a moment, and as i was about to place the key in the ignition, there was black smoke coming from the passenger mirror. i got out and ran over, and saw flames. i ripped the black cover with the mirror off, saw that there was an electrical fire. burning myself, i put the fire out in time to keep it from getting out of control. with the fire safely out, i saw that it was from the led courtesy light assembly at the bottom of the passenger side mirror. it was completely melted and burned. i removed the part, (as well as the one from the driver side for safe measure), and took them to my local ford dealership so they could report it as a faulty part. the part is the wagner part 71077. according to the driver side (i could not read the passenger side to see if it has the same part number, or if it is different for right and left.) the wire assembly, was burned near the base of the wires where they enter the assembly. had i not been there to put out the fire, my car would have burnt to the ground!!! my hand is recovering at this time. *tr updated 09/19/13*lj the consumer sold the vehicle, a year ago. updated 09/24/13
Vehicle surges when idling or going slow. accelerates at times like parking or moving through parking lots or when stopped at stoplights. *kb
I was parked with car running for about 10 mins. when i went to back up the car, the car lunged backwards while my foot was still engaged on the brake. car stalled but i was able to re-start car. wrench and engine lights were on. i drove the car home but the fuel injection was labored and did not accelerate normally and would also accelerate unexpectedly while sitting at traffic light. i was able to get the car home, but check engine light was still lit after several days. *tr
My 2006 ford freestyle limited has major electrical problems. i have had the car lunge on me, at 0mph it would lunge forward, and in reverse. fortunately i had my foot on the brake every time. i don't think it is the transmission. i have a feeling that it is all electrical. i have had the lunging problem since last year. (2011) and the car has been deteriorating since. yesterday i got "check charging system" and now it kills all of the lights and gauges... yet it still kind of ran.(not very good up hill, and no indicator lights, no speedometer nothing.)another recent problem i have is the center engine (shock?)mount is busted. *tr
For about 2 months i had been experiencing some minor surging when car was put into reverse but thought it might have been bad gas or needed a new fuel or air filter. first major incident was in august when i started my car and put in reverse to back out of parking space. before i took my foot off the brake, the car accelerated backwards and then stalled suddenly. this happened at least 3 times while i was in the parking lot before the car finally began to work properly and i could drive it home again. both wrench and check engine lights were on. *tr
With the vehicle in gear, either forward or reverse, and with a foot on the break at idle rpm the engine surges causing the vehicle to lurch. consequently, the vehicle will either stall or the "wrench" light will illuminate and the vehicle will not accelerate to over 30mph while driving the rpm's up well past normal for that rate of speed. this is also the case while at idle speed (no foot on break...just engine in gear and at idle...as if pulling into or out of a parking space). this has been ongoing, yet intermittent, for a little over a year though now it's a multiple-daily occurence.
Trying to park my car in a crowded parking lot, the car suddenly surged forward and then stalled. i tried to restart the car and it would not start. i waited a minute, turned off the radio, a/c, etc and then was able to restart. i have had a similar problem on two other occasions since. *tr
I have a 2006 ford freestyle i pulled off the interstate stopped at a stop sign when i went to pull away the car lunged forward almost hitting another car and died 3 times the check engine light came on. i went to pull back on the interstate and had no power had my foot to the floor and could barely get to 30 mph. i am an automotive tech took the car to work and pulled the codes po61b internal control torque calculation and p2106 throttle control system. after researching the codes i found that alot of people have experienced the same problem with the same codes and had to replace the throttle body. i am replacing the throttle body but realize this is a common and dangerous problem that ford is not taking care of or even acknowledging there is a problem. knowing that the throttle bodies were on back order not long ago means to me they are in big demand so there must be a problem. *tr
First, during a family vacation the wrench light kept coming on and the 2006 freestyle would have no acceleration like the transmission would not engage to get the required speed to pass. this results in slowing traffic down causing road rage with other drivers in the vicinity. on one occasion one of our teenagers who is learning to drive experienced this and will not drive the car for this reason. also, on several occasions while i was driving in route to work or the grocery store, my 06 ford freestyle sel limited seemed slow and sluggish to respond as i would be waiting at a red light for the green. when the light did turn green and i would press the gas pedal to go, the car would stall/shut off. a few times there were close calls as the car behind me would be unaware i was having trouble and almost rear-end me. when the car would cut off, i would proceed to restart the car and then press the gas to go. the car seemed to respond extremely slow like i would have the gas pedal pressed to the floor and would only be able to go 20 - 25 mph. on other occasions, the car would seem to lurch forward or backward (depending on if i had the car in drive or reverse) the wrench light coming on my 2006 ford freestyle creates a very dangerous situation because the engine will accelerate without applying the gas pedal and will not accelerate at times when the gas pedal is pressed. people at ford tell me that the company making the valve body part went out of business without notice, which does not help my situation any. so what is to be done? i have notified my state and federal highway safety commissioners, nhtsa, and my friend who also owns a 2006 ford freestyle of the problem and i would like to ask everyone with a similar problem to do the same. please explain, what is to be done? *tr
My 2006 ford freestyle has an issue where the rpm stays at 1500 allowing my vehicle to move at speeds of 25 - 30 mph with my foot off of the gas pedal. while stopped at a traffic light, the rpm was at 1500 then dropped all of a sudden causing the engine to almost stall. the rpms then jumped up again to avoid the engine stall causing my vehicle to move forward. in researching possible causes on the internet, i found that many ford owners have experienced the same issue and had to replace the throttle body (throttle position sensor). i called ford customer service and despite the numerous consumer complaints, there was no recall or no issue reported related to this serious acceleration issue. i was told to take the vehicle to my local dealer, have it repaired, and if ford decided to put out a recall that i may be reimbursed for this issue. my concern with ford's approach is that if every owner pays for this repair without anyone in the consumer safety board being made aware of this that there will be no recall. someone could get injured or killed with such a serious vehicle defect. *tr
Engine revs and vehicle lurches while placing the car in reverse, even with foot firmly on the brakes. appears to be worse when air conditioner is on. vehicle has lost virtually all power while driving. when this happens, you can floor the gas peddle but the vehicle won't go over 10-15mph. pulling over to the side of the road, turning vehicle off, waiting 15 seconds or so, then restarting, seems to reset the vehicle to a more functional level. the vehicle also has an extensive exhaust smell and it is currently at the shop for a $566 repair for the diagnostic exam and that diagnosis indicating that the egr valve needs to be replaced. i called ford and they do not have a current recall for the egr valve, or throttle body-which seems to be a correlated problem within the two. *tr
