Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2013 Ford Focus

Very hard shifting through gears when first starting to drive. after car is warmed up and driven for a time. there is a shuddering in the transmission when starting from a stop. the hard shuddering makes it seem like the transmission is going to fail.

I have had to take my vehicle to the shop many times because the transmission surges and loses power. the dealer says they just reset the computer. but a few days later the issues return. then the dealer says there is nothing wrong. the issues continue. i am afraid that i will get hit in an intersection because the car loses forward drive.

Vehicle shudders when i try to accelerate slowly from a stop sign or making a turn on to a street. sometimes shudders when i am already moving but trying to speed up with traffic such as being on a highway. also when im low on gas before it reaches e it completely shuts down. no gas light or shuddering. i had champion ford in erie pa look into this but there was no code or anything to go by. im not sure what to do. it has been happening frquently now but everyone i talk to says its hard to determine without a code, but what if my control module is messed up or something? i have 5 kids i transport everyday and worried that this can cause an accident if somethings not done?

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the check engine indicator illuminated. the contact stated that the vehicle began to jerk, hesitate, and the transmission would not switch into second gear. the vehicle was taken to ford autonation (2 auto center dr, tustin, ca) where it was diagnosed that the transmission lever assemblies, the engine cylinder, and the transmission clutch were faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 129,000.

The car jerks and shutters when taking off from a complete stop. this is worse when the a/c is on. when accelerating the car will jerk between shifting gears causing the car to move slower at take off which has almost caused multiple accidents.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle jerked, lunged forward, and lost power. the contact managed to gain control of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to morlan-shell ford (1824 porter wagoner blvd, west plains, mo 65775, (417) 256-3193) where multiple diagnostic tests were performed, which determined that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. the transmission was replaced five times, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided the contact with case number: 96-182145. the failure mileage was approximately 62,000. *tt *tr check attachment characters are over 2,000. arbitrator's decision form case number #xx-xxxxxx 'parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*jb

along with the myriad of ford dps6 transmission problems, and repairs over the past 4 years, i alsoy had an event that could have caused a fatality directly related to the performance of the power train and engine. while attempting to make a light acceleration for a city green traffic signal for a left 90 degree turn the car unilaterally increased the speed and rpm's. the car was moving so fast i nearly hit a tree on the opposite side of the intersection at a high rate of speed. i had to repeatedly hit the gas peddle with my foot to stop the acceleration, while maintaining directional control of the vehicle. i am still waiting for ford to contact me about the other fuel recall issue related to this vehicle so they can address this issue as well.

I was driving my car and the transmission quit working. a light came on and said transmission overheating pull over. i barely made it to the dealership. when you hit the gas pedal, the card would not go.

This car repeatedly thrusts forward at lower gears whilst in traffic and while in motion. it has been repaired twice within a 6-month time-frame for the faulty dps6 transmission. the capless gas tank is also presenting a constant issue, involving a leak of some sort that continues to reoccur. i have been in numerous situations that could have proven to be fatal as a result of the transmission responding too late: as well as thrusting at lower speeds when coming out of a stop or traffic back-up. this issues happen while in motion, or when making an attempt to go into motion.

We bought our 2013 ford focus st in feburary 2017. starting in 2018 sometimes it wouldn't d go in reverse. it also started hesitating while we are driving or pulling out in traffic. now in 2019 it will completely lose power going down the highway or just the street and leave us stranded. we have replaced the battery and have had other recalls addressed. i have seen a recall for the wiring harness but it doesn't show up with our vin number. it was manufactured jan 1st 2013. this car is very unreliable. you never know if will turn on and if it does it may make it a minor or 10+ miles.

When accelerating the car makes a loud noise when trying to shift and hesitates when giving it gas. car was purchased in jan 2019 and had been doing this since we owned the car.

Since ive purchased my ford focus back in 2013 i have taken the car back to ford dealership on numerous occasions in relation to the faulty transmission and electrical issues. on my 5th attempt my transmission was replaced. this was around the end of 2017 to 2018. on may 2nd 2019 i was driving to work and as soon as i turned on the car the windsheild wipers started to go off and for some reason i could not turn them off. once i arrived onto my work campus i turned the cornee to park my car... when all of a sudden my car flashed an error message on my dash stating the following, " transmission failure repair now". i calmly parked the car and within seconds of turning off the car i see smoke and then flames from the bottom of my engine hood. i quickly exited the car abd the flames got bigger and bigger. the fire department was called and the had to smash the back window due to the flames that had over taken the front of the car. unfortunetly my car is not a total loss. i was at the end of my contract agreement with ford and inly having to pay 6400 left on my loan. ive called their customer service to complain and see what can be done and was told i would get a letter in 2 weeks by their legal council. this has caused me to delay my entry into nursing school since now i have to work to handle the car the new car i just had to buy. i need transportation for work and ford took that from me. ive now seeked out a lawyer to see what can be done. with all the times i asked for help and i ended up seeing my car go up in smoke. im just so thankful i was able to get out iof the car in time. but believe me im still shaken and this has caused me to never buy ford again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while accelerating from a stop, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact stated that the failure recurred four times since the vehicle was purchased. the vehicle was taken to skalnek ford (941 s lapeer rd, orion charter township, mi 48362, (248) 693-6241) to be diagnosed, but the dealer failed to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. in addition, the contact stated that the engine warning indicator illuminated. the contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 19v515000 (fuel system, gasoline). the manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact to take the vehicle to a ford dealer. the approximate failure mileage was 56,000.

I was driving on a city when i the car shifted gears. i continued to drive it not thinking anything of it. once i came to a point when i had to reverse, i realized that's my car did not want to move back wards even when i used the gas.

Transmission fails to engage, skips gears, accelerator does not move car initially but will rev high then engage. multiple repair attempts have failed to correct the situation from replaced clutch plates to tcm replacements to reprograms of the module.

Since i drove the vehicle off the lot, transmission shudders, jerks, vibrates, rough up/downshifts, slips into neutral, wont shift into reverse, transmission fault warnings, transmission overheat warnings. the car does not reliably accelerate/decelerate under normal operating conditions. on multiple occasions had to push the car out of a parking spot by hand since reverse would not engage. had to push off the road several times after violent shifts/shuddering and warning lights. has happened numerous times since purchasing the vehicle. initially dealership said over the phone the new technology hadn't adapted to my driving style yet and it would clear up. eventually i took it in for repair after repair and have since taken the vehicle off the road. the last episode happened with my children in the car and it's no longer safe to transport passengers in.

When attempting to pull out into traffic from a stop, the car suddenly lost power. pressing the accelerator was just causing the engine to rev. then the car shifted into gear and suddenly lurched forward. it then dropped out of gear and lost power again. car continued to shift randomly, drop out of gear, and suddenly shift into gear and accelerate creating a very dangerous situation. it would not shift correctly after that until i took it to a dealership and they updated the transmission control module software. service advisor at the dealership said this was a common problem and would likely happen again.

Transmission clutch shuddering/chattering on acceleration, primarily in 1st and 2nd gear. worse when ambient temp is warmer. slams into gear, sometimes breaking tires loose on pavement. only owned this car for 1 week. mileage in the 70k range. especially dangerous pulling out on a turn. car will jerk sideways and hesitate, leaving you open to being struck by another vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that water was found inside the vehicle more than once after it rained. also, the clutch vibrated when the gears were shifted. the failure occurred every time after shifting out of first gear. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to star ford and lincoln (1101 s brand blvd, glendale, ca 91204, (818) 956-0977) where it was diagnosed that a new clutch and fuel tank were needed and the power train control module (pcm) needed reprogramming. the contact stated that the mechanics only installed a new fuel tank and reprogrammed the pcm. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures and did not assist. the failure mileage was 59,763. *tt*jb

The transmission has been slipping badly but warranty is only 100k miles and car has 105k so ford dealer says i have to pay repairs. this is a know issue. dashboard display is damage and shows no information - millage - and can not pass emission testing since can not determine millage. dealer want $800. vehicle just shut-off in middle of driving - very scary - disconnect and connect battery and worked but scary and dangerous. all these three issues -transmission, display & shutting off- should be a recall because car can not be use.

I owned the car 3 days and the transmission light came on. claimed the transmission module was replaced. two hours after getting the car back it would not start, engine light came on. see photo it would appear the obd2 wires have been tampered with in an effort to disable the light continuing to come on. (picture attached) the car is back in the shop. it has been 2 weeks since purchase i have had the car in my possession for a total of 3 days. the used car place where it was purchased will not take the car back. there is a 90 day warranty that will run out. the car is over the 100k mile warranty for the dealership to fix.

Couldn't shift, slow shifting, won't go into gear, won't come out of gear. won't crank, won't move. this happened over a period of 4 years

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 10 mph and switching gears, the vehicle slammed into second gear. the contact stated that the failure occurred everyday for the past month when switching from first into second gear. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

Vehicle has repeatedly had transmission issues coming in a variety of forms. at times i will be unable to accelerate, with my pedal to the floor, while the car seems to 'coast' and with no explanation. other times i have had the vehicle's alert lights come on with a warning the transmission has overheated and to pull over 'immediately.' this is difficult to do when on a 55 mph zone or on the highway; the inability to accelerate has led to multiple incidences pulling into traffic or attempting to merge where vehicles have had to swerve or stop because i am in their way. in daily driving, there is a constant shudder that makes me believe the vehicle will fail at any moment. this vehicle was the daily driver of my wife and we were forced to lease another vehicle because she did not feel safe. it has been in for a multitude of repairs and requires more. however, no dealership is able to schedule an appointment or provide a loaner, even though it is supposed to be a covered repair. i exceeded my warranty to have it entirely covered simply because no dealer could schedule me. the problems began in 2013 and have persisted since, to this date. the most recent safety-related matter occurred on a winding two lane road a month ago where there was nowhere to pull over safely and the car threatened to shut down due to the transmission overheating

While driving at city speed in elkin, nc, the transmission fault light came on and the vehicle stopped. here i am stranded in traffic. not the safest position to be in. i shut the vehicle down and restarted it in the hopes that this might reboot the fault and solve the problem or at least let me get to a dealership. the transmission fault light was still active but i was able to move only in first gear. the transmission would not shift. i was able to get to the ford dealership in elkin, nc where they were able to diagnose the problem. the transmission module of this wonderful dps6 transmission had failed. they had a transmission module in stock so a repair was made. i dread every time i have to get into this vehicle. i worry if i am going to get to my destination safely. i worry if i am going to get home safely. ford is making every delay possible to slow down the legal process.

Studdering, shaking upon acceleration

Country ford stated that they fixed the issue. i called them the same day that the issue was still on going. they stated that it might have been the reset of the computer. i'm very concern the issue was not fix because the needed part wasn't available at the time. the car still stalls when it's at half a tank and completely stalls when it's at a quarter tank. this is not safe to be driving down highways or in a busy city. i am concern with with my health and life it suddenly shots off on a busy road.

Takata recall. the transmission has a shutter/slip in between 1st and 2nd gear and i hear that is a problem with these cars. my car is a 2013 ford focus titanium hatchback. it does it everytime i take off

Takata recall. the transmission has a shutter/slip in between 1st and 2nd gear and this is a problem with this year and car. ford had even offered to buy these cars back. my car is a 2013 ford focus titanium. it does it every time i take off. now my car wont start because the clutch is stuck and ford is telling me i'm out of warranty - clutch has been replaced 3 times already and they want to charge me $2,300 to fix an existing and ongoing issue they know they have.

2013 ford focus se. the dealership will not perform the recall.--my vehicle is subject to multiple items, according to the vin report. i don't know what to do...

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate. the transmission and other unknown warning indicators illuminated. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and powered off the engine. the vehicle was restarted and was able to be slowly driven to autonation ford katy (located at 20777 katy fwy, katy, tx 77450, (281) 305-8949). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired due to the diagnostic and repair cost. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v735000 (fuel system, gasoline). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 52,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the gear independently switched to first gear and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to brenengen ford (615 s black river st, sparta, wi 54656, (608)-269-3673) where it was diagnosed that the wire harness failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in any recalls. the failure mileage was 107,800.

Having issues with the transmission shuttering and delays in response. we were crossing a busy highway not long ago and as we pulled onto the highway the car started vibrating and shuttering uncontrollably and would barely move. we almost got hit trying to get across. we have had this transmission fixed multiple times for the same issue. this car is not safe!

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while at a stop light, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road. she waited ten minutes, restarted the vehicle, and was able to drive normally. the contact stated that the vehicle drove very slowly and failed to accelerate. the contact drove the vehicle to kirk auto co (located at 235 state hwy 7 frontage rd, grenada, ms 38901, (888) 480-6177) where it was diagnosed that an unknown switch from the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. the contact was informed that the clutch and transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v735000 (fuel system, gasoline). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 104,704.

I called washington ford in washington, pa on 1/17/2019 regarding a check engine light due to ford focus recall (purge valve). they scheduled an appointment for 1/30/2019 to fix the recall. took my car in on the eve of 1/29/2019 and dropped it off. they called me the following day to say they didnt have the part available. they instructed me to pick up my car and said they would call when part came in. i had an inspection scheduled for 2/7/2019 and they told me it would come in prior to my inspection. i never heard from them but called back a few times, telling them i had new codes coming up on my obd sensor (fixd) the car had been running rough, stalling out while idling/stopped.. they assured me it was safe to drive. they did not get part in by 2/7/2019 and i missed my inspection. two new codes came up on my car and i called angrily on 2/14/2019 to ask if they need me to take car to a different location, and they told me they were just about to call me to tell me parts came in.. we scheduled for 2/22/2019 to have recall fixed. they told me rental cars aren't covered under this recall when i explained the problems with scheduling so many appointments and having difficulty finding other transportation. on 2/17/2019 my car shut off while driving, on a major road (route 40). i was able to coast down a side street and pull into driveway at the bottom of the hill. had the dealership fixed the problem the day they originally scheduled me, i would have a working car. now, i'm afraid more damage has been done, as there are 7 total codes on my obd sensor(there were 3 when i first called about recall). the dealership should have never scheduled me when they didn't have the right part in stock, or a rental car should have been provided until they corrected the problem. i'm very unsatisfied with the customer service level at this location!

Takara recall my car is shifting weird the evap canister for fuel is clicking and my car is getting bad mpg my car clunks when going over bumps the front end clicks when you turn and feels like something might break i dont think the electrical system is working rite

Takata recall initially the car started shaking and making terrible noises. after parking it, the car would not go into reverse. it was towed to a "dealer" facility where they did some "repairs" on the transmission.....$600. the car was transferred to me and i have experienced a loss of forward power several times. after a short wait period it will start. i have been involved in an accident.....pulled onto the 4 lane one way highway and lost power....bam . the car also has the "shudder" issue while idling.. it feels like the engine will stall.

Shuddering between i believe first and second gears 63000 miles on it paper work from approximately 10,000 miles ago

My current problem is after fueling up my car it starts and then stalls, then the next restart it turns over about 5 to 10 seconds and starts and then has a erratic idle and it may stall again, or if i manage to take off it will run ok, unless i have to stop within a 100 yards, and it then may stall again, or have a erratic idle around 2000 rpms, then idles down to the 750 area if i'm lucky, only after fueling up. every start afterwards starts and runs fine until the next gas up. i have an engine code i believe they said was a evap code, my fuel tank is starting to concave on the bottom. i talked to my dealership and they said i'm not part of the recall, although he said i fit all the parameters of the recall, but my vin number its in the system. i'm looking for help and hope someone can contact ford ! ps this is on going and very dangerous! thank you, very disappointed in ford. ps ps the transmission is another forty pages of info if you ever have the time to talk. *tr

This car shudders when starting from a stop. especially bad going up an incline

My car start shuttering on acceraltion and shifting funny. i did some online research and a lot of people said there was a recall on the clutch. i called ford immediately for schedule for the recall but they told me it's not longer a recall. i was under the impression that recalls were good for 10 years and also thought that ford had to notify me yet i never even knew about the recall and now i cant seem to get it fixed. is that right?

The focus dps6 transmission continuously shudders and stalls when driving, especially when starting out and shifting between 1st and 2nd gear. after all of the incidences i have heard about this transmission, i believe there should be an official recall that allows for repairs or replacement of the transmission.

The powershift transmission is defective, as i have had it replaced multiple times in a car with only 50,000 miles. i had my clutch pack replaced for slipping and shuddering twice within a two month/2,000 mile period. initially the problems went away, but they came back and are worse now. there have been 2 incidences where i was driving and the check engine light came on and the car's screen said to service the transmission; the car would not shift gears so i could not accelerate. both times i would turn the car off and after sitting for a while (overnight), it would turn back on everything would be normal. the transmission shudder happens when i accelerate from a stop or from a near stop, like in stop and go traffic; the car shakes and acceleration is very uneven. when the car is first started in cold weather, the rpms jump up rapidly when i am accelerating from a stop to the point where the tires slip and spin, regardless of how much i press the gas pedal. excluding the issue above, the shudder seems to occur more frequently the longer the car is being driven, and the warmer the weather is. when i am driving and i push the gas pedal to accelerate more (like going into a roundabout or merging onto the highway) the rpms rise up very high but the car just coasts and does not accelerate for several seconds. sometimes when i am at a stop, i will push the gas pedal and the rpms will rise, but the car will not accelerate for a few seconds. the issues are sporactic, as the car will be fine for a few days and then it will be almost undriveable for a few days.

2013 ford focus, was bought new from dealership and has had clutch issues from beginning. the car stutters on acceleration, shifts hard, and occasionally there is a delay when the gas pedal is pressed. a recall was performed on this car and the clutch was replaced, but still had same issue. this car has been seen 8 times for this issue, and has never been resolved. the clutch that was replaced during the recall has failed the performance test, but the dealership will not replace due to expired warranty. recently another recall was issued on this vehicle due to a stuck cannister purge valve. this causes the engine to stall and the fuel meter to read incorrectly. this caused me to run out of gas on the highway when my gas meter reported i still had half a tank of fuel. on 11/29/18, the dealership performed the recall and believing my fuel meter to now be accurate, i ran out of gas again at a quarter tank full. my check engine light is back on and it is again throwing a code for the purge valve. this car has several safety issues which ford dealer has been unable and unwilling to remedy.

When accelerating from a stop sign/ light, the car shakes violently. i've had the car in the shop multiple times where the information on the bill states "clutch misfire". the fix is temporary, lasting a month or two, and then the problem is back. i've had the car for two years and this has been a reoccurring problem.

Hello i'm writing this complaint regarding two things. my transmission & my radio. first my transmission has been took to a ford dealership locate in michigan to have an diagnostic ran on it and it was noted by the dealership that my car has two field actions on it which both have to do with the faulty transmission which happens to hesitate to take off and also jerks when i accelerate. this has been going on since this vehicle has been in my grandmothers possession. now it has gotten worse to the point where it now drags and there is some slipping when it shifts. the second complaint i have is that my radio recently began to start to static and pop. and now for two weeks my radio have not been able to turn on, the only thing that displays is the time clock, date & temperature. i haven't gotten any audio from the vehicle. i've replaced the fuses for the radio and it still isn't playing any audio. and i currently do not have time or money to put into this vehicle any more.

Transmission slips in forward gears, will not stay in reverse.

Vehicle automatic transmission fails to shift gears causing stall, severe shudder, inability to accelerate through intersections and onto highway on-ramps. dealers refuse warranty service to repair clutch assembly. dealers acknowledge fault due to precisely same mechanical problems with 2012 ford focus models that are subject to recall, but for this 2013 model dealers require repair cost of $1,300 to $1,600 for parts and labor. vehicle has only about 65,000 miles. problem started circa 11/5/2018 and persists intermittently. review of ford focus blogs and owner comment websites indicate problem well-known and ubiquitous.

Transmission shifting issues. this transmission started acting up and staying in first gear to long, and then when it does finally shift, it skips gears and goes directly into high gear. the vehicle only has 77,356 miles on it. research indicates that this is a known ongoing issue with this model transmission. what action does a consumer have with a vehicle that has known issues? there has been no official recall on this model, although the issue is well known among focus owners, and a class action lawsuit has been initiated.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 65-70 mph, the vehicle independently shifted into neutral without warning. the contact was unable to place the gear shift back into the drive position. the vehicle was towed to beach ford (located at 2177 virginia beach boulevard, virginia beach, va 23452, 855-802-4534) where it was diagnosed that the power train control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 57,714. the vin was not available. *tr consumer 25 jan 2018 car not shifting properly. new clutch assembly installed under warranty at 42,930 miles by beach ford, 2717 virgnia beach blvd, virginia beach, va 23452 mileage at time of incident was 57,714 the vin is listed above. this is the 2nd transmission repair completed on this vehicle. the first repair was the replacement of the clutch assembly because of poor shifting. this was done under warranty on 25 january 2018 at beach ford in virginia beach, va. the mileage at that time was 42,930. one final note. many articles written about these transmission problems consistently cite no imminent danger caused when the car goes into neutral since the vehicle can still steer to the side of the road. however, the sudden loss of power caused by the shift into neutral could be catastrophic in a passing or maneuvering situation. these transmissions are terrible. *jb
