Car was parked for about an hour and when we went to leave we did not have any steering. car was fine before we parked it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 25 mph, the steering wheel stalled and the steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (jones ford casa grande, 1932 n pinal ave, casa grande, az 85122) where it was diagnosed that the steering pump failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and contacted the dealer, but no further assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 81,972.

About 5 months ago, upon starting my car after being left overnight received an error message of "steering assist fault" and the steering wheel was incredibly difficult to turn. i turned it off and restarted it and the error message was gone and the steering was normal again. this would happen again twice over the next 5 months but it always corrected itself once i restarted the car. earlier this week the error came on again but wouldn't go away and my steering wheel was difficult to turn. with difficulty i was able to get it to the dealership where after several days i was told the entire steering rack needed to be replaced. this car is less than 5 years old and has just shy of 78,000 miles on it.

Power steering assist failure, the steering wheel is incredibly hard to turn when the vehicle is stationary.

Bought this car - had less than 2 years and the transmission failed twice. the transmission issues were covered under a recall. steering assist fault/malfunction was happening. you'd shut the car off and turn it back on and it would fix itself. the steering assist fault come one while my daughter was driving and she could no longer steer the vehicle. thank god she wasn't involved in a car accident and was close to our house. this seems to be a well-known defect in the ford cars and ford is offering no help to fix the issues. they are going to get sued because, sadly, this defect is going to end up killing someone. they are lucky my daughter wasn't hurt. this steering issue should be recalled. lives are at risk and no one seems to care (especially ford!). now ford wants $2,500 to fix this defect. i don't think so! ford will not get another red cent from me, ever! their steering defect could have cost my daughter her life! i'm ready for a class action lawsuit. i'm ready to fight! what is it going to take to get this defect recalled? an innocent life, maybe two? what? everyone is put on notice that there is a serious malfunction with this car and i know ford already knows about it. they've had issues with steering in their other vehicles that have been recalled and they've had 100s+ (if not more) of complaints with this vehicle in particular regarding the steering. ford turning a blind eye is completely unacceptable!

While driving to work on a city street my car just quit on me the dash indicated steering wheel default, i started the car up had no problems since four weeks ago he did the same thing my car had 77,767 miles at the time.

Many people are aware of the transmission control module problem with the 2013 ford focus that has been recalled. however, i have had another problem with my ford focus that i researched and found that many more people are having the same or similar problem with their fuel tank collapsing and needing to replace most of the components in the entire fuel system. i had the purge valve replaced as an out of pocket expense as my extended warranty has expired, hoping this would fix the problem. i was informed by the mechanic that to fix my car completely, it would most likely need a new fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel line and of course the purge valve ( which i had replaced ). my car is only 5 years old and i do not know how or why i need to replace the entire fuel system. i have seen many posts describing the same situation on carcomplaints.com and know of someone locally who i know personally who has the exact same problem with their 2013 ford focus. when driving, my engine will shut off completely. from time to time, my oil light will come on as my engine stalls out and tries to 'die' and i can press the gas to 'revive' the engine and keep it from shutting off. this repair of the fuel system was estimated to cost $2,000 to repair and i just don't have it. i listed my car online for $5,400 as is and have no one interested in it at that price after i've invested nearly $20,000 in this car in the 4 years i've been making payments, maintenance and repairs on it. i've also had the power steering replaced on this vehicle when i had around 80,000 miles on it. the power steering failed while in motion and almost caused an accident. this particular vehicle is a dangerous one. buyer beware.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 5-10 mph, the steering wheel felt stiff and the power assist failure message displayed. the vehicle was taken to tom peck ford (13900 automall dr, huntley, il 60142, (877) 841-2409) where it was diagnosed that the power steering system needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 15742314. the failure mileage was 58,000. **tr consumer stated it occurred 3x in 2 months. updated 11/9/18*jb

Steering started off stiff. when starting car had to turn wheel to right for it to start without failing. then just froze.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. after starting the vehicle, the power steering malfunctioned and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. the power steering sensor also illuminated. in addition, while driving, the transmission malfunctioned and caused the vehicle to hesitate when accelerating. the vehicle was towed to the local dealer (coughlin ford, 24001 u.s. rt. 23 south, circleville oh) where it was diagnosed that both the transmission and steering column were faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 106,000. *tt consumer stated car had issues with clutch since it was bought. updated 11/26/18*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that the electric power steering (eps) failed to function. also, the "steering assist failed" message flashed and the steering wheel became extremely tight while attempting to turn left or right. the vehicle was not diagnosed by the dealer or an independent mechanic. the manufacturer issued two tsbs for the steering, but there was no eps recall for this year, make, and model vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and suggested that the vehicle be taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing and repair. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 56,000. **tr *tr

Steering assist failure. lost power steering while backing out of garage. stopped then turned vehicle off then on again and the fault went away.

Loss of power steering, wheel hard to turn and i have to use muscle power to steer

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the steering wheel seized and the steering fault warning indicator illuminated. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact to take the vehicle to a local dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 55,000.

We parked at a gas station for gas and when we started the car again, it showed "steering assistant fault" and it's so hard to turn the steering wheel. we almost called someone to tow the car. we went to a auto shop and the guy said nothing caused this, it's ford's problem and we need to go to a dealer's to replace the steering gear. we went to a dealer and it cost 2100 to repair. and it's not under warranty.

At highway speed vehicle steering becomes unpredictable. at times the steering will have a 'loose' feeling where inputs are made with no response causing more input to be made then suddenly vehicle will turn causing an over correction and input needing to be made to correct the vehicles path which basically makes driver seesaw at steering wheel to keep vehicle in a straight line. other times steering becomes hard to move out of centered position causing excessive effort to move steering wheel. once moved out of center the above mentioned fight to keep vehicles path straight begins. when trailing behind another vehicle, especially semi trailers the vehicle becomes extremely unstable causing constant left and right steering inputs to keep vehicle from veering off highway. small bumps or road ruts will occasionally cause steering wheel to snatch left or right. vehicle alignment has been checked twice, tires were replaced, rotated and inflation checked. ford dealership and independent tire shop have verified that there are no worn parts. ford dealer states electric steering gear requires replacement. i have owned vehicle since it was new (5 years) and this condition has just started within the last several months.

My steering gear has gone out with less than 100,000 miles on car. i have been reading and this is an ongoing problem with this car. i also almost hit a car during a turn when the steering stopped working. not safe and is a lemon due to ongoing transmissions issues as well.

The power steering went out on the vehicle. dealer says i have to replace the steering rack and have a new alignment - $2500.00 and not covered under any warranty. car has only 65,000 miles on it.

The first problem was with the transmission, ford extended the warranty to cover whatever the part was out to 150k miles. the second problem was the radio/sync system quit working. and as of today july 7 a steering assist fault warning is coming up on the dash. i did some research and the problem does not appear to be an isolated incident. the steering assist fault warning comes on when you start the vehicle, we have not seen it happen while in motion.

Power steering rack began to fail, took into shop and as they removed it to replace it it fell apart. i was advised by the shop that should this had failed on the freeway i could have died due to having zero steering ability.

The steering wheel completely locked up after receiving an alert message that read 'stop safely steering disabled'. extremely dangerous situation being left with no ability to steer the car. had to have the car towed and power steering rack replaced

Backing out of the driveway, my steering locked and "steering assist failure. service needed" appeared then disappeared. i almost hit a tree behind me. when i got the car to the shop i was told that the entire power steering compound gear assembly unit had to be replaced and it would cost me $1700. not only is this issue expensive but extremely dangerous. i was lucky it happened in the driveway and not actually on my way to or from work with rush hour traffic, causing an accident.

The check engine light came on and my car starts jerking and skidding and slowing down. i was scared and didn't know what to do because i had my daughter in the car. i called my technician and he said that a code came up on my car p087a. he said that the code has to do with the transmission, as the fault is a common fault with this type of transmission that ford started using in 2001. i'm trying to see if this vehicle is covered under warranty and if ford has a recall on this issue. the car has about 77k miles.

My 2013 ford focus steering wheel has been locking up. i was driving 75 on a highway and my wheel locked up. i lost control of the car, spinning several times before landing in a ditch with my 7 year old in the backseat. we were not hurt thankfully, but it has caused some emotional trauma for my son who had to receive counseling. my car was checked by professionals through ford collision cener. i had to get new tires and an alignment, about $1000 worth of damage. since no one could find anything wrong with my steering i thought maybe it was a freak accident. my steering wheel has locked up several times when putting it in reverse. it then locked up completely while making a left hand turn that almost ended in another wreck. it is the steering motor and will cost me $1800 to fix. i have filed a claim with ford and they refuse to take responsibility for this steering defect. upon doing some research, the steering motor has been a problem with ford's from 2010-2014, with documented casualties due to the steering locking up. this is a serious issue and should not be ignored any longer. recall the steering motors now, take action. i can't even trade this car in for another because the price of the vehicle deteriorates with every recall, including the recall of their faulty transmission issues. get these cars off the roads, they are a hazard!

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 40 mph, the power steering completely failed and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact pulled over, restarted the vehicle, and was able to drive home. the contact previously called j.c. lewis ford (9505 abercorn st, savannah, ga 31406, (912) 210-5676) because the failure initially bean when the vehicle was started. upon restarting the vehicle, it resumed normal operation. the dealer stated that they would not repair the vehicle because there was no recall. the manufacturer was notified and they provided the same information as the dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 90,000.

Ford focus 2013 steering assist fault. as i was driving my power steering stopped working. i was very rattled as the car suddenly jerked to the right and i could not steer it back to normal. i had to shut the car off and back on to make it work again. now whenever i turn my car on it comes up with a warning that states steering assist fault. also my power steering is not working anymore. i could have been seriously injured or worse if this were to happen while on the interstate or in an intersection, etc..

During a right turn, lost power steering. dash warning citing electronic power steering assist failure. almost struck car at cross street waiting at light. this is a known problem with recall on previous model years and other models of the same year. per ford dealer, requires replacement at $1952 cost because not covered under recall.

Electronic steering assist went out on ford focus making it almost impossible to drive. my focus is a 2013 with only 15000 miles and only used for 20 miles transportation a day 5 days a week. initially was moving and was able to pull into a parking space. it hasn't worked since.

Steering power assist fault message will come up and steering will become very hard. happened while backing from my driveway and turning steering wheel fully to the right or to the left. diagnosis is calling for a replacement of the steering rack with about $2500 fee. upon request, ford decided to not provide any financial help.

When i started my car the steering wheel was hard to turn. i got a warning on the dash that said steering assist fault. this is crazy! the car only has 63000 miles on it. please have ford include these focus cars in the safety recall also. this failure while driving could kill people.

Electronic steering system went out, ford recalled other models, like fusion for the same problem, but not the focus. this is a safety issue because once system fails, car is undriveable, and can crash if it fails while driver is on the road. it happened to me while i was pulling out from my driveway. went to dealership and was told about recall for another models, due to the same problem, but since focus didn't get recalled i had to shed 1700$ for repairs.

My ford focus st 2013 suddenly failed and showed the message "steering assist fault service required". steering wheel got very heavy and not possible to drive the car to the dealer. there were not previous warnings, a noise or feeling of it was not working correctly, it just happened from night to morning when parked in my garage. i m located in mexico but this info may help and i m willing to help.

I've had the clutch and transmission control module replaced twice. the car still doesn't drive properly. my car locks, auxiliary, ac nobs need tweaking to work. the brake lights constantly go out. when i'm on an incline the brake alert comes on. and now there is a power steering issue. the steering wheel is completely locked up and i'm unable to drive the vehicle.

Takata recall- i'm having a problem with my steering. one afternoon i started to car and noticed that my steering wheel was stuck. after a while i turned the car off and let it sit then started it again and the problem was gone. the next day i attempted to drive the car and couldn't because the steering wheel was hard to turn. the ford dealership is telling me to pay an excessive amount of money for the issue. i just want to know what do i need to do from here.

Electric power steering recall. the electric power steering just randomly went out on my focus. drove to the bus stop and it was working fine. got in it to go to work and the steeri g wheel wouldn't budge. took it to the dealership and the entire electric powering has to be replaced. $1600!!! there was no warning or anything. i have done research and read that people are driving down the highway and their electric power steering just locks up while they are going down the road. this ford focus is a safety hazard and i regret buying it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the steering wheel seized and the steering fault warning indicator illuminated. jim charlon ford, inc (269 south china lake blvd, ridgecrest, ca) was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed since the vin was not included in a recall and because of the diagnostic fee. the manufacturer was called, but the contact was not able to speak with a live representative. the failure mileage was approximately 104,000. the vin was not provided.

Driving down the road at 35 when a steering failure warning popped up on the screen we drove a short distance to a gas station by then the power steering was completely gone. we did leave the gas station just trying to limp it home not far out of the gas station the steering completely locks up. had it towed to the closest ford dealer. $1900 to have the steering module replaced. i had just had the car in a month ago because the transmission failed. that was on recall so no cost. i'll tell ya i feel punched in the stomach and cant believe ford does not take responsibility for all their faulty parts. launching a complaint with ford. new richmond, wi bought used in 10/17 ford focus 2013 86000miles

Steering quit completely. very very difficult to steer while driving 35 mph. almost hit a telephone pole.

(1) google ford transmission settlement. incredibly dangerous problem with design. that's the biggest problem and although i took it in to the dealer and they "fixed" it i have no faith. (2) i had to have it towed to a dealer this morning for electronic power assist failure. lost steering while driving. googled that and found out about the massive problems with this issue. contacted ford and they said vin doesn't show it as a recall. i'm absolutely disgusted with the level of deceit by ford.

Received a "steering assistance fault" warning light on the dash display after starting the vehicle which resulted in not being able to turn the steering wheel without extreme effort.. after turning off the car, it reset and began functioning. approximately a week later it happened once more after starting the car, and once again it reset and was drivable. this is a very serious condition and possibly deadly if not corrected. i did research and found that there are many, many instances of the same issue with other ford products such as fusions, explorers, lincolns and many others that did have a recall. why has the focus not been recalled with the same issue. this should be investigated and expedited to make the ford motor company responsible for any repairs at their cost and a recall should be issued to save lives.

While pulling out of my garage i received a "steering assist fault" notification on my dashboard. i had to miss another day of work for this issue. i say another because i have had my vehicle in the shop over 20 times for others issues on top of this. i purchased my focus in 2013 brand new and 4 years later my steering gear needs to be replaced? since i'm at 70,000 miles i'm well past any coverage and they want me to shell out 1600 dollars to replace it. i've had nothing but issues with this car since driving off the lot (transmission, clutch, seal leaks) and this is just another notch on my ford vehicle owner belt!! not happy at all with this purchase and will never purchase a ford vehicle again!

While driving vehicle steering wheel locked and 'assisted steering failure' notice came up on dashboard

Upon backing out of my driveway, i attempted to turn my steering wheel to direct my vehicle in the direction of traffic. the steering wheel would not easily turn, and a grinding noise could be heard inside and outside of the vehicle. as i pulled forward the steering would stick, resisting changes in direction, then breaking loose on overcorrecting.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 25 mph, the steering wheel seized. the contact turned the ignition off and back on, and was able to drive. the dealer (crown ford, 555 cypress ave, redding, ca 96001) diagnosed that the power steering module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 55,000.

Power steering assist failed and service is required warning light came on during start up. turning wheel was very difficult. vehicle currently has 52,749 miles

My son was driving our 2013 ford focus on a city street and the power steering went out. thank goodness he or no one else was not injured and was able to maneuver the car home. turns out the power steering module went out. this seems to be an occurring problem in prior year models and had recalls on them. however, the 2013 model did not have a recall and we had to shell out over $1700 for repairs out of our own pocket.

Warning that power steering assist has failed and service is required. couldn't turn the steering wheel. happened when starting the car. turned car off and back on. no message and steering was working. i managed to drive home but now afraid to drive it.
