Problems with 2012 Ford Focus FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2012 Ford Focus starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 84 331 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2012 Ford Focus

Check engine light came on and took it to ford dealership to get it fixed. they informed us that the purge valve was faulty which caused the fuel tank to be deformed. total cost of fix is $1,000 plus and they also wanted to charge $321 to check the check engine light. after researching the issue, this is a known problem to ford and the dealership. this is a systemic issue and the part was already recalled on the fusion but not the focus, therefore, ford refuses to take responsibility for the part on the focus. the dealership said we could fix the purge valve only but the gas gauge would not read correctly. what kind of advice is that? a bandaid on a systemic issue due to a faulty manufactured part that causes the vehicle to be unsafe when driven. i have filed a case number with ford and they refuse to correct their faulty part. ford recommended i file a complaint with nhtsa.

Fuel tank or vapor recovery system faults in the purge valve and vapor canister cause excessive vacuum in the fuel tank which then begins to collapse. effects include false fuel readings and 'distance to empty' indications in the trip computer, as well as a reduced overall fuel capacity. driving at 70 mph speed limit during rush hour in the middle of a 3 lane interstate, the 'distance to empty' reading was 25 miles and my destination less than 3 miles away. i ran out of fuel and had to maneuver to the shoulder in a vehicle without power.

I was driving on the freeway, at freeways speeds (approximately 65mph), my car's engine spontaneously stalled and shifted into neutral, all of the warning lights went on, and both the engine and brakes stopped working. while still moving at freeway speeds, i could not get the car engine to turn back on or get the transmission to re-engage out of neutral, and the brakes continued to not work. the brake pedal felt jammed, as if there was a power failure in the brake system; i could not get the pedal to move. i was able to coast without power to an off-ramp (i was still traveling >45 mph on the off-ramp), and then use the emergency brake to stop once on a surface street. after letting the car sit for a few minutes, i turned it back on, and the problem did not return. i drove the rest of the way home on surface streets. following up on this, the check engine light was on; an auto shop replaced the evap purge valve assembly and oxygen sensor (see attached repair invoice) and that solved the problem. based on this experience, it seems like the car stopped due to an issue with the fuel system, making the fuel/air ratio in the engine too lean. i do not know why the brakes also stopped working. i feel very fortunate that this occurred at night when there was no traffic on the freeway. if there were other cars on the road, this would have certainly caused an accident as i could not safely accelerate or brake. the engine stalling was not preceded by any significant acceleration or braking.

I have 2012 ford focus titanium with handling package. earlier this year is when this issue started. i pulled up to gas station to pump fuel into my car. after i was done i got back into my car and pushed the push start button. the car struggled to turn on and stay on and eventually stayed on without any issues so this lasted maybe 5-10 seconds. each time i started up the car i had zero issues with getting car turned on. this issue only occurs when i have just put gas into the gas tank and i'm starting up the car. filler neck has been replaced, fuel sensor and have even had a evap test done for leaks and the issue is still around. i've had a diagnostic done and the code came back as the car is releasing too much fuel. i don't remember the code or the exact wording but that was what the code was saying.

Faulty fuel vent valve caused entire fuel tank to collapse.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while walking outside of the vehicle, the contact noticed a strong fuel odor. he inspected underneath the vehicle by the fuel tank and noticed fuel on the ground. the vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 138,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the check engine indicator illuminated. in addition, the front driver's side wheel was wobbling. furthermore, the engine stalled and the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road. the contact had to restart the vehicle and the check engine indicator turned off and on. thornhill ford lincoln (u.s. 119 north 500 ford fairlane, chapmanville, wv 25508, (304) 855-8300) stated that there was no warranty coverage; therefore, the contact would have to pay for diagnostic testing. the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 18v735000 (fuel system, gasoline) and took the vehicle to the same dealer for the recall repair. the failure recurred after approximately one month. the dealer wanted to charge for another diagnostic test. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 53,000.

Check engine light came on. codes indicated something wrong with purge valve and small evap leak. while driving at 55+mph on a 6 lane highway, my car stalled and my battery light and oil light illuminated. before that happened, car would just rev and then jerk me forward. i was almost hit by multiple vehicles. this is a huge safety issue!! i made it to my mechanic where they informed me that my purge valve got stuck open causing the vacuum system to suck my fuel tank it, also causing it to collapse. my fuel tank, fuel pump, charcoal canister, and purge solenoid all needed replacing. repairs cost me $1700 out of pocket, not to also mention rental car. this was recalled on ford fusion...why not focus?! this could have caused serious injuries or fatalities!! i expect reimbursement for all expenses!!!

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. the contact was able to coast the vehicle over to the side of the road. in addition, the contact observed that the fuel gauge was on one fourth of a tank. later, the fuel gauge indicated a full tank when the contact had not filled up the vehicle. the contact called aaa who stated that due to the indicators illuminating, the contact should add fuel. the contact added fuel and the vehicle started on the first attempt. the local dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified and did not assist. the contact was referred to nhtsa. when the contact shut off the vehicle, it responded as if it would not restart. the contact currently adds fuel while the vehicle is idling. the failure mileage was approximately 102,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle after several minutes. after the vehicle was restarted, the check engine indicator remained illuminated. the vehicle was taken to brandon ford (9090 e adamo dr, tampa, fl 33619, (813) 246-3673) where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump fractured, which caused the fuel tank to collapse. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 57,000.

The purge valve of the fuel system was stuck open causing the pressure differential to crush the fuel tank because of the vacuum effect. all other parts of the fuel system have been overheated because of the inconsistent fuel flow so they all have to be replaced.the entire fuel system including gas tank. the car would stall or want to stall while driving on streets, stopped idling, and driving on highway causing very dangerous situations. this would occur everytime you would drive vehicle.the problem started in september with no warnings and finally was so bad on october 13th i had to take it to the ford dealer to get evaluated the car couldnt be driven anymore.

The purge valve cause the car to stall in traffic while driving and back fire cause the gas tank to suck in

While driving on the freeway 70mph and on city roads at 35 miles an hour the car will just lose power and shut down, the check engine light and fuel pressure light and battery light all come on when the car dies. only the check engine light remained after getting the car restarted. and will take several tries to get it started again. we took it to the ford dealer in american fork utah today and we received the code tsb 1600 6 to which they say means that we need to replace the fuel tank as well as the gaskets in tubes and sensors. it will cost about $2,000 to replace. we are not having them fix it at this time since we can't afford it. this comes just a week after they had our car for two weeks to repair the problem with the transmission recall. not sure what to do at this point. this has happened several times in the last few months and three times in the last 24 hours.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the spouse was driving at 40 mph, when the check engine light illuminated as the vehicle started to shutter and stalled. the vehicle was towed to koons falls church ford 1051 e broad st, falls church, va 22044 (703) 241-7200, where it was diagnosed with the fuel tank shrunk and was not getting proper amount of fuel to operate the vehicle. the fuel tank and purge valve needed replacement. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact mentioned that the dealer informed him that the transmission module was replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. the contact stated that the manufacturer made him aware that the vehicle has no warranty for the fuel tank. the failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled and failed to restart. the vehicle was towed to the midway ford dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank collapsed and the fuel valve was damaged. the fuel tank and fuel system needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened case number: cas12489026. the approximate failure mileage was 96,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 70 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic (precision auto care in charleston, south carolina) who diagnosed that multiple codes leading to the fuel system reader were inaccurate; therefore, the vehicle was out of fuel. the fuel tank needed replacement. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 119,000.

Inaccurate fuel gauge indication and inaccurate distance to empty. ended up having to replace evap emmision purge valve, fuel pump, and fuel tank, and canister. had to replace all parts again 4 months later when my car stop running while i was driving down the highway and this happened to me 3 times.

My vehicle's fuel tank is compressing due to a faulty vacuum purge valve requiring a new tank, fuel pump and purge valve. this issue has caused my vehicle to stall in freeway traffic and in stop and go traffic. the fuel tank is also not accurately reading incorrectly, you are not able to tell how much gas you have with thh indicator. . ford focus- 2012, 58k miles

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while being operated, the vehicle experienced complete loss of power the vehicle was towed to the robin ford dealer where it was diagnosed that the purge valve, fuel pump, and fuel tank were defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 76,000. updated 07/18/17*lj updated 10/17/2017*js

2012 ford focus fuel gauge reading erratic, specifically indicating full when near empty. this problem is accompanied by emissions check engine codes p144a. this problem is identified in tsbs as early as 2013 as an "evap purge valve" failure which causes fuel tank collapse. false fuel level indication may cause drivers to run out of fuel and become stranded. dealer advises fuel tank has collapsed and requires fuel pump, fuel tank, canister and solenoid replacement immediately due to risk of car stalling out and/or running out of gas unexpectedly. when fuel tank is full just after filling up, car requires multiple attempts to start. mileage at failure: 83000. this appears to be a very common problem for 2012 ford focus. ford recognizes the failure of the plastic gas tank such that the replacement gas tank is a different gas tank which is not plastic, therefore passing on the very expensive cost ($2,000) of the design mistake to the customer. this is not a normal wear and tear cost of ownership problem! this was recalled on the ford fusion, it should be recalled on the focus as well.

2012 ford focus standard transmission original owner experienced power loss 3x on highway in 6 years. vehicle would lose power on highway and could not accelerate past 65mph gas pedal to floor..no warning lights on dash slow acceleration in any gear with slight stutter. when i pull over turn off for 5 minutes then start again problem goes away.you tube search shows multiple ford focus owners same issue. checked with ford..told me they had software update but my vehicle not in list for upgrade as it is not affected.

While driving on the highway my focus began stalling out very abruptly. i was as if i was slamming on my brakes while cruising on the highway with no notification that it was about to happen. this happened many times and the car would sometimes stall completely or just keep moving. while idling at a stop the rpms would fluctuate rapidly then the car would stall out. i bought this car at 57k miles and at 65k it was diagnosed as the fuel pump which was replaced. now at 77k miles i am experiencing the same symptoms and they are very dangerous especially on the highway. the manufacturers pump is clearly faulty and it's costing me another $600 to replace for the second time. i have seen many others with this same issue and i'm hoping to see a recall on something this dangerous.

Having problems maintaining speed ! when i excelerated it doesn't want to pick up speed then suddenly it picks up speed after pressing the pedal to the floor. very dangerous. i saw this very same complaint from another focus owner dated in march 2016 . very scary!

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. after stopping at an intersection, the engine turned off. the contact had to start the engine in order to continue driving. the check engine indicator illuminated after the failure. the dealer diagnosed that the fuel tank was deformed, which affected the fuel pump and fuel line. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

March 1, 2017 check engine light came on after car stalled, idle would increase and then decrease and then die. made appointment at ford dealer in lake worth, fl. had to leave vehicle. at same time 3 recalls supposedly fixed. i was told fuel leak in gas tank, that is going through a hose into areas it should not go, causing readings to cause stalling and check engine light. i was told i needed new fuel tank, sendera?, gasket, tube asy for approx. $1,300 then $500 for labor for total of $1,800. never heard of such as this except in vehicles over 20 years old or from accidents. vehicle has approx. 90,000 miles. first incident occurred as i was accelerating from a traffic light on a city street, other times were similar or stopped or riding on interstate hwy, it would just stall.

Incident description: engine stopped and without warning while the transmission was in drive. engine light came on as the engine ceased running. it happened while the car was in motion, thankfully approaching stop sign. understand that this also results in the loss of power steering. the car is regularly serviced, well-maintained, and has approx. 94,000 miles. verdict from ford dealership mechanic: vacuum purge valve was stuck in the open position. the vacuum force that resulted damaged/warped fuel tank, and damaged the fuel pump. the purge valve, fuel tank, and fuel pump all must be replaced. cost: the cost of repairs is over $2000, plus towing the car, and the need for my family to get a rental vehicle for a week. misc: there is no recall for this item and this could prove exceptionally dangerous if it occurred on a highway especially since you lose power steering when the engine dies suddenly.

Check engine light came on . took to dealer where i purchased car . all maintenance has been done at this dealer . service manager told me that problems with purge valve have caused fuel tanks to collapse and that was case in my car , code p 1450, code p144a . i asked if ford would cover these repairs as car was out of warranty 79318 miles but obviously a manufactures defect , ford refused to cover repairs and i payed under protest $ 1596. 55 for repairs. car was stalling at stop lights , and fuel gauge not working properly when check engine light first came on .

This car also has that terrible transmission, mine replaced four times the fuel flaps both get stuck and it floods, won't start problems with tire lug nuts, two piece design? who designed me what a piece!

My seventeen year old daughter driving a 2012 focus i got for her to get to school has been a problem from day one.the trans recall, the door recall now the check eng lite came on the dealer told me p144a code is the evap emissions purge line restricted/blocked.the car hesitates on take off and stalls when stopping.this is unsafe for my child to drive.i have an appt with ford monday to see if i will have to pay for it to get fixed our if the recall will cover it.not a happy dad!!!!

Takata recall so i was told after having multiple problems with my vehicle after bob lowth ford selling me it that some parts are on recall and i have small children i don't want to put in risk if anything happens during the winter weather here in mn for insistence my engine light came on and it started feeling like it wanted to die out on us early morning around 7:30 am central time so i always try to make sure that my small children have blankets in case we die out in -20 weather. *tr

My car constantly smells like gas when i start it up after filling the gas tank up, the car dies when driving down road i have to pull over to start it because it dies while i am on the road so i have to pull over since last year the fuel reader stopped working causing me to die on side of road because of running out of gas. the car still has transmission issues it jerks from time to time and the half shaft bearing and wheel bearings are currently going out in this car. i bought the car brand new at the ford dealership. this is car is a lemon i have owned over 15 used cars and never had a problem as much i have had with this new car.

Car at stop engine revs from low to high, if you press on the accelerator the engine will die even when you are in motion. sometimes the engine will just die when you press on the accelerator. in traffic on highways this is extremely dangerous. the cost to repair this default in design was $889.18 at the ford dealership where the car was purchased new. that is an egregious charge for a common complaint about this care. per the internet research we have done. ford says the car is out of warranty and take it up with nhsta so that is what i am doing.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the vacuum line malfunctioned when the vehicle reached half a tank of fuel. the failure resulted in the vehicle being unable to start. in addition, the check engine indicator illuminated as the vehicle failed. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 60,000. the vin was not provided.

Ford focus gas tank issue: my car was stalling and would not accelerate timely so took it to the ford dealership. they said the evap purge valve malfunctioned causing the fuel tank to warp. the gas tank needs replaced as well as everything related (see attached). my research on the internet (i have never heard of having to get a gas tank replaced due to normal wear and tear) shows that this issue is known by ford and they are refusing to do a recall or even a notification to the owners of these vehicles. besides my huge concerns on having a defective gas tank (i see it as a fire hazard), the car would not accelerate on the interstate and was trying to stall out - i was very lucky not to get hit. ford has done recalls on other vehicles with this issue why not the ford focus? i expect to repair / replace things like the brakes not the gas tank.

2012 ford focus fuel gauge reading erratic, specifically indicating full when near empty. this problem is accompanied by emissions check engine codes po420 and po456. this problem is identified in tsbs as early as 2013 as an "evap purge valve" failure. false fuel level indication may cause drivers to run out of fuel and become stranded.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. it was diagnosed that the fuel pump and fuel tank needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 107,000.

Ford has a tsb for a known issue of the evap purge valve malfunctioning and causing the fuel tank to collapse. i fueled my vehicle up this morning and, upon starting, it stalled. i started it again, and after pumping the gas, it stayed on. the check engine code is p0441a.

On 10/14/16 my wife complained that there was a smell of gasoline around her car. i walked out to the driveway and there was a strong smell of gas. she told me she had just filled the gas tank and confirmed that she does not top the tank off. i jacked the car up and found that there is a yellow plastic ring where the fill hose is attached to the gas tank. that ring is cracked and gas seeps out from there. we found that it doesn't leak if she has less than half a tank of gas so she usually keeps it that way until i have a chance to pull the gas tank out.

My vehicle's fuel tank is compressing due to a faulty vacuum purge valve requiring a new tank, fuelpump and purge valve. this issue has caused my vehicle to stall in freeway traffic @ approx 60 mph and to stall in stop and go traffic. my rpm will fluctuate when at a stop and my fuel guage is completely inaccurate registering full to 1/2 at random. smell of gas from somewhere but unknown. symptoms match a recall on a 2011 ford fusion but no recall on a 2012 ford focus

Purchased a used 2012 ford focus with 89,000 miles. i've owned the car for two years. i recently began smelling fuel. after filling the fuel tank i began looking for the source of the leak. i jacked up the rear of the vehicle and noticed a fuel leak and the fuel tank was plastic. i took it to a deal for the door latch recall and was informed it needs a fuel tank do to a crack on the top of the tank. the cost of the new tank installed is $1340.00 witch included the labor. there is no way a fuel tank should crack in four years. the vehicle has never been in an accident. there is a fuel tank recall on ford fusion and lincoln millan, witch also have plastic tanks. this is reminding me of the 70's when american car manufacturing was terrible.

I took my vehicle to tropical ford in orlando fl for a recall regarding the transmission and clutch, which job had to be done 3 different times within 90 days. after i picked up the vehicle on the 2nd attempt the vehicle mysteriously developed a problem with the gas tank and some other sensors inside the tank and related to the fuel system. the technician told me that this was a known issue and that he could show me all the gas tanks they had replaced because they had a pile of them in the back. i was told that the problem was due to the design of the system and that ford was aware of the issue but they were not doing anything to assist or take care of this serious issue which causes your car to stall and engine to turn off while driving in the highway or city. i called ford warranty department and filed several complaints and each time i was told that this issue was not cover by the warranty and there was nothing they were willing to do regarding this matter. this issue puts lives at risk when a vehicle turns itself of while driving in the highway or city. this issue is putting drivers and families at risk. this issue started at the beginning of 2016 and i recently had the repair done at the same dealership mentioned above.

I went to ford late september for my car stalling and was told my transmission was failing again. my transmission had already failed once on a 2012. ford fixed it and then a couple days later my check engine light was on. i brought it back and ford said my fuel tank had collapsed and that i would need to pay $2k to replace it. i'd never heard of fuel tanks not lasting the life of the vehicle. i did further research and found out ford has released a tsb for this known issue which is a precursor to a recall. i am not sure why ford would not cover a faulty fuel tank and i am not sure how this is not a safety issue when my car can stall or leak flammable liquid or fumes. i've read that other focus owners have had theirs replaced twice or more so i am not confident ford actually has a solid fix to the issue and i do not feel safe driving my car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that there had been no failures until weeks after the vehicle was serviced for nhtsa campaign number: 16v643000 (latches/locks/linkages). the vehicle was repaired by champion ford lincoln (140 southtown blvd, owensboro, ky 42303, (270) 684-1441). the contact heard an abnormal noise in the area of the instrument panel and radio. in addition, the doors failed to lock. the contact felt that the recall repair failed to provide a permanent remedy. the vehicle was not repaired and the dealer indicated that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed. the vehicle was also included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v735000 (fuel system, gasoline), but the part was not available. the contact called to verify if field service action numbers: 14m01 (transmission clutch shudder/transmission input shaft seal) warranty extension and 14m02 (transmission control module) extended warranty coverage were serviced by the dealer with the manufacturer. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was not available. vin tool confirms parts not available.

My 2012 ford focus has started to idle rough and stalls occasionally when slowing or stopped. after taking it to the dealer for service they informed me that the canister purge valve had stuck open causing suction in the tank and resulting in the top of the fuel tank to cave in. they said that i needed to have the fuel tank, fuel pump, purge valve and canister replaced for around $2000. this is a known problem with a tsb from ford however there is no recall so i am forced to pay the dealer to fix the problem. with such a widespread problem ford should own up to the defect and issue a recall.

The car cuts off while in motion. at times it will shut off at stop lights, in the middle of traffic or just stop accelerating. it may start back after restarting the car.

My 2012 ford focus needs a new fuel tank, fuel pump, purge valve and canister per tsb 16-0062. it's because the purge valve was malfunctioning and has collapsed my gas tank (plastic) and i needed to replace the fuel pump, gas tank, fuel tube assembly. all cost $2000. many others have this problem but it appears that there is no recall on this. this is something that should be addressed as a recall, not an "eff" you to the customer that has to deal w/ a known issue to ford. when stopped, the vehicle would idle rough. the engine actually died on me in traffic one day. the check engine light came on w/ code p1450. then my fuel gauge became highly inaccurate, showing a full tank of fuel when i may be at half or lower.

Car will stall out when stopped. gas needle will not work sometimes. echeck engine light will come on and go off when gas it put into the vwhicle.it

June 2016 noticed a significant drop in my average mpg. took vehicle into dealer who told me the purge valve was stuck open creating excessive vacuum on fuel tank causing the tank to warp and the fuel pump to bend.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced a complete loss of power without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the malfunction was due to the fuel tank and fuel pump, which needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 105,000.

In october of 2015 the transmission failed completely while i was driving in the center lane of a major highway. the fault was in both the transmission control module and a broken seal and clutch. even after repairs were made the transmission remains problematic. then in may 2016 the fuel tank collapsed while i was driving it on ga 400, a major interstate connector. this was the result of a stuck valve. the fuel tank was replaced, however less than a week later, the fuel tank collapsed again while i was driving it, this time however my daughter and her friend were in the vehicle with me.
