Problems with 2013 Ford F-150 ENGINE

On average, the 2013 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 46 364 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Ford F-150

When i accelerate on the highway to merge or pass my truck looses power completely can not accelerate. it shudders for about 45 seconds check engine light comes on flashing and it suddenly comes back to life. i took it to my local ford and they said it was a high pressure pump that needed to be replaced. i replaced it and it is still having the same issue. this seems to be a common issue with these trucks. the more research i have done the more i find about this same issue. ford should be held liable and recall these trucks for this problem. i now have to take it to another ford dealership hoping they can figure it out. last ford truck i will ever own.

Engine has grinding noise for 2-3 seconds on daily initial startup and when engine is cold after sitting several hours. dealer performed engine diagnostic and diagnosed the timing chain issue. for timing chain issues, this requires the replacement of timing chain and phasers. dealer est cost to fix = $4000+. this has been a reported issue for this engine over the last 3+ years. ford has refused to address on a recall, or refund customers who have already incurred this expense.

Passanger side exhaust manifold bolt as broke off causing an exhaust leak. the vehicle has 59010 miles and is a 2013. ford wants over 1600 to fix said issue. ford is not willing to accept fault or cover under emissions warranty.

I was driving down the i5 freeway in orange county ca around 6:45 pm doing approximately 65-70 mph, suddenly my truck downshifted into first gear causing me to start fish tailing and almost flipped over. my engine then went into a full rev, redlining. i was able to get over to the side of the road. where i had my truck towed to the dealer.

Fuel pump fuse is prone to failure due to design flaw. ford is aware and a service bulletin has been issued. also a 'fuse 27 relocation kit' available. this failure causes the fuel system to fail without warning and causes the vehicle to stop operating. a recall should be done or offer of free repair should be available.

Date 11/9/2018 vehicle: ford f150 2013 driver: experienced miles: 148,653 date of incident: 11/1/2018 location: south bound on i-275 in southeast, mi road condition: dry driver was on the highway going 73 mph in the left lane passing a semi when the vehicle shifted from 6th gear instantly into 1st gear. causing the vehicles rear end to lock up and throw the vehicle sideways. driver was facing the side of the tractor trailer head on now while the rear end was bouncing off of the rumple strips. the motor was well over 6800 rpms causing the tac to bounce between 6500 and 7000rpm. not only did this put a lot of stress on the motor and turbo, this also shocked all of the driveline components. a shift like this is commonly referred to as a "money shift" because it destroys an entire driveline as well as the motor. luckily the vehicles driveline was still intact after this harsh downshift and the driver was able to throw the truck into manual mod shift the truck back up to 5th gear and counter steer 2-3 times to correct from the tail end kicking out. the driver believes that an average driver would have died in this same situation. the driver feels lucky to be alive after experiencing this. after the driver pulled the truck into the nearest ford dealer and explained what happened they told the driver that they have not heard of this problem before and that they wouldn't be able to look at the vehicle for at least a week. the drive then called ford to report the issue and on three separate calls on 11/1/2018 ford told the driver that they will not cover the problem, because it's not a re-call. the driver would greatly appreciate it if the nhtsa can open an investigating into the 2013+ models of the f150's transmission suddenly shifting from 6th to 1st gear. this is a very deadly malfunction especially with icy roads just around the corner in mi.

The fuel pump fuse (fuse 27) overheats and burns out resulting in the entire truck shutting off at speeds. this happened to me at 65 mph on a highway leaving me with no engine at that speed.

Vehicle stalls while driving and won't restart for hours. this has happened 3 times since may and twice since september 2018. each time it has been taken to a ford dealership and the ford dealer says that they can find nothing wrong that can be recreated. i have stalled out on an 8 lane highway. this was an extremely dangerous occurrence. i recently had the entire truck serviced, from oil change to throttle body cleaning to spark plugs to transmission cleaned, axles cleaned. all of this was done mid august 2018 and still has not fixed the issue. i have 102,367 miles on my vehicle. when i looked to see if there were others with this issue, i found that there were many and that ford is refusing to issue a recall to repair this extremely dangerous and hazardous malfunction. i am sitting on the roadway right at the moment, waiting for aaa to tow my truck to the dealership.

When the truck was in cruise control, the engine started randomly downshifting all the way to 1st gard.

Went to pass on highway in my 2013 f150 with a 6.2l engine, and the throttle stuck wide open causing me to accelerate up to 80+ mph. it did not decelerate for about 1 min. i had to avoid hitting other vehicles.

Transmission - molded leadframe malfunction on 5.0 motor. the 2011-2012 recall for the molded leadframe malfunction also affects 2013 vehicles such as ours leading to the truck loosing power, stalling out, shifting on it's own from 5th to 1st and the other way leaving the truck a wreck waiting to happen at any time during driving. this risks the lives of the driver, passengers and everyone else on the road. when this happens you must bring the vehicle to a complete stop, shut it off, wait for computer to cycle, then restart. ford should be expanding the recall to replace this deadly malfunctioning part at their cost. this has happened at least 10 times within 30 days of owning the vehicle which was bought from maxwell ford in austin texas. the last time this happened it was in a parking lot after just starting the truck and backing out of a stall.

My 2013 ford f150 is stalling at at any speed, and the wrench icon appears on the dashboard. sometimes the engine icon also appears when this happens. it's off and on. the engine light does not stay on. i took it in for a checkup, and they said fuel system needs cleaning. also, my transmission has started jumping at low speeds, and reduces the vehicle to and absolute crawl....less than 5mph. it's not a high speed problem...just at lights ,complete stops and stop and go driving/traffic.

Ford f-150 3.5 v6 ecoboost stalls out at excessive speeds. while trying to overtake another vehicle the truck misfires because of the intercooler cools the air to cold to evaporate the condensation and hits cylinder four which cases it to misfire which then cause the engine to stall. ford knows about these problems but does not notify the customer about the potential of it happening to people purchasing the vehicle. this is a major safety issues!

While driving and moderately accelerating onto freeway yellow wrench light came on, battery light came on and car decelerated. accelerator did not work and motor ran rough. turned ignition off then back on and started car. warning lights went away and motor ran fine

Eco boost power loss

The fuel management system blew the fuse. i looked online and saw where many people have had this happen and ford has a service advisory issued for this problem but charge the owner with making the correction to the defective wiring. they do not simply replace the mini 10 amp fuse but instead replace a part of the wiring and relocate it to a standard 20 amp fuse. when i explained my concern about engineering a fuel management system for a 10 amp rating and switching it to the 20 amp which could allow other parts of the system to overload he basically told me that ford had decided this was how they would fix the problem but now i have the concern other components of the system failing and sure enough it was less than two weeks later the fuel pump driver module failed causing my vehicle to stop running. the service manager also told me i was lucky as he had seen total melt downs of fuse panels from this defect. this has cost me $805 in repairs due to a faulty wiring design. the vehicle was stationary at the time, once in a parking lot and once in my driveway.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle spontaneously downshifted into first gear and the check engine indicator illuminated. the contact called sunset ford (11700 gravois rd, st. louis, mo 63127, (314) 843-4431) and was informed that diagnostic testing was needed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 208,000. the vin was not available.

Radiator fan turns on after approximately 5 minutes of vehicle running and continues to run until the vehicle is turned off. this started at approximately 60k miles. the fan turns on regardless of temperature outside the vehicle. it also turns on regardless the transmission temperature. the only consistent piece is the timing. the truck can be in motion or stationary.

Experiencing timing chain rattle at startup (for about 2-3 seconds, noise comes from the front of the engine), as described in tsb 16-0027, after truck has been parked overnight or longer than 8 hours. rattle is definitely mechanical sounding and sounds like the engine is about to fall apart.

Sporadic shifting. transmission and/or oil pressure causes the truck to completly shut down on me when driving down the highway.

Vehicle experiences hard downshift from higher to lower gears while driving at highway speeds on interstate highway, causing rear wheels to skid and vehicle to jerk. vehicle looses power with rpm indicator on dash showing engine revving at or above 1,500 to 2,500 rpms while driving on local roads and streets. when starting from a stopped position the engine rpms will climb to 1,500 to 2,000 and the vehicle will no move. the wrench indicator has come on 3 times but goes off if vehicle is shut off and restarted. additionally, the vehicle electronic control system does not store any codes to indicate the vehicle has experienced any problems. have taken vehicle to local ford dealer on 4 occasions only to be informed that no codes were present and vehicle did not act up while in their possession. also informed by dealer that unless code is displayed during diagnostic test ford motor will not pay for repairs unless code is displayed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 55 mph, the vehicle would downshift into a lower gear and slow down. the rpms increased and the contact was concerned that the engine would blow a rod. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (watertown ford chrysler, 1600 9th avenue se, watertown, sd 57201, (605) 886-5844) who offered to repair the vehicle at the contact's expense. the repairs were not completed and the cause of the failure was not disclosed. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not covered by any recall. the failure mileage and vin were not available. **tr *tr

Timing chain went bad i here it has been happening to lot f150 2013

While driving on a highway, i went to pass another car. the transmission downshifted, and the rpm increased, until the engine/car began shuddering and slowed down, with the check engine light blinking. i was able to pull off the highway at the nearest exit, and after a period of time in idle, the engine regained its normal idle speed and operation. checking codes pulled up a p0302, indicating a cylinder 2 misfire. no issues were found with the spark plugs, coil or cables for cylinder 2. this is a dangerous failure that appears to be affecting other owners of this truck, and could cause potential for injury or death, if the engine stalls at the wrong time.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving, the vehicle lost power. the wheels seized, the vehicle slid, and the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was coasted safely to the road shoulder. the contact had to drive through the back streets to avoid traffic. the vehicle was driven to sunrise ford (16005 valley blvd, fontana, ca 92335, (888) 629-1239), but was not diagnosed. the vehicle was then driven to upland ford (555 w foothill blvd, upland, ca 91786, (909) 333-4242) where it was diagnosed that a new motor was needed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 100,000.

Vehicle exhibited a crank non-start condition. fuse 27 was examined and found to be melted. these two observations satisfy ford's conditions of tsb 15-0137. ford knows this is an issue with their design and offers a fuse relocation kit (el3z-14293-a). the fuse was melted from poor fuse box contact design. thankfully, this happened on startup and not while the truck was in motion.

Truck went in to "limp mode" while accellerating to get on highway. vehicle decellerated. wrench light came on. vehicle was shut down and towed. found throttle body and motor assymbly defective

Bought the truck in september 2015 with 60,000 miles on it.now i have 101159 miles on it now. at about 98,000 miles my check engine light came on and i lost acceleration power when first taking off from a stop or if i get on the gas the truck hesitates and will either accelerate slow or won't accelerate at all. almost got in an accident about a week ago when merging onto the freeway do to lost power. contacted a mechanic and he came picked the truck up and ran testing on it and couple hours later called back and said my timing chains and phasers needed to be replaced. with that said it will cost me $3,000-4,000 to get this fixed and i simply do not have an extra couple thousand dollars to shell out for this fix . i have been doing a lot of searching and have been finding that a ton of people have had this problem and when they contact ford, ford is basically saying they are sol and have to pay out of pocket for the fix. i still owe $22,000 and thought about trading it in for something else but feel they will knock $4,000 off what the vehicle is worth. i have no idea what to do at this point. please help!!!

While driving engine continues running but suddenly discontinues movement of vehicle. after couple minutes with engine off vehicle will resume normal operation. has happened twice, once on neighborhood street when turning corner and second time on freeway traveling about 60mph.

The timing chain stretched causing my engine to miss time. i was told by the service department of a ford dealer that if this was avoided long enough it could have blown my engine. also while discussing this issue with the service mechanic he informed me he sees this issue frequently. this tells me that this is a common problem that is bringing grossly ignored by ford.

I have file with you about this before and it has been a recall for this problem but the ford company has not taken care of this problem nor have they taken care of a second recall for another problem with this truck both of these problems together have almost cause 3 very near accidents for me the most recent i was pulling a trailer and entering and on ramp to interstate i-94 on entering as normal i tried to exhilarate to highway speed when all of a sudden all power to the drive train stopped and the truck went into a natural mode (like pushing the clutch in on a standard shift transmission) at that point i was in the drive lane right side but 2 semis one passing the other were barrowing down on me i had to cut sharply to the right and off the shoulder of the highway to keep from being hit buy one of the semi's the ford company stated they would have the parts and the soft wear to fix this problem by the 2nd quarter of 2019 it is now the second half and the problem continues to get worse it now clucks when shifting up from 3 to 4 and sometimes down shifting and when taken your foot off the gas pedal for a few seconds then then push on the gas pedal again the trans will clunk again when i test drove this truck before i bought it i told them there was something wrong with the drivetrain and they told me there was nothing wrong with it that i needed to learn how to drive a six speed transmission the thing about that and they don't know me before i retired i was the floor and operations manager for the community garage of battle creek mich. i have had this truck in to them 2 different times and 2 different dealerships plus i.ve taken it in 3 other times but after making and appointment and telling them i would need a loner which the warranty covers then when i get there no loner plus i would have to pay a $100 fee on the warranty for the thing they never fixed (19v-075)

Engine stalls out periodically. very dangerous in heavy traffic. this happens every time while in motion not sitting still. this is the eco boast 6 cylinder engine. has been numerous reports with others but ford still won't issue a recall on these engines. it has 89350 miles on it. i'm going to change the plugs & boots this weekend but i'm sure that will not solve my problem. ford is being stubborn on recalls. hopefully no one gets hurt in these vehicles before they issue the recall. thanks nhtsa.

Vehicle was in motion, pulling a trailer and the light came on and then shut down completely. turned it off then back on and it was fine for 2 blocks then did it again. it took several attempts to get it to the dealership. they informed it is electronic throttle body failure.

Reported this problem before and now it getting worse it was just the transimission shifting from high gear 6 at 70 mpg in cruise and when i tap the breake peddle to disengage the cruise it dowm shifted to low 1 and the rpm went from 2500 to 6500 and stay in low until i came to a stop then everything went back to normal it now also blown transimission lines and when i take off from a side street of stop light it will take off ok then about the time i reach the center of the street it will sfift into nuteral i can step or pump the gas peddle but nothing happens it just goes into a slow role after 3 to 5 sec it then jumps into gear and takes off normal again also at slow speeds you can hear and feel it clunking into and out of gear and with a metallic sound some times once in the snow had it in 4x4 at parked it and turned it off the next day i back it out of the drive then shifted it into drive then the transfer case shifted it out of 4x4 and it sounded like 2- 8 lbs sledge hammers smashing together and jarring the hole truck this in the beginning has only happen a few times but i was on the freeways at hi speeds i dont drive it on the freeways now and because the dealer ships want a $100 each time i take it in for the same problem and they dont do anything and plus i paid eatra for the platinum warrenty so if i have to leave it i get a loner and i have even been able to get a loner even when it took them over a week to install the transmission lines after they blow out from stop and going in on residential streets also when the trucks shift from high to low you can hear the solenoids shifting all overe under the dash floor infront of the seat along with the dash light flashing even one with a eng with a trans attached

On three occasion over the past 12 months while driving our vehicle had a complete loss of throttle response. causing the vehicle to slow while in traffic causing vehicles behind to swerve to avoid a collision. coasting to the side of the road a blu wrench icon was lit up on the dashboard. the vehicles ignition was turned off then the motor was restarted with no difficulty. the wrench icon went off and vehicle ran appropriately.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. there were no warning indicators illuminated. upon researching the matter, the contact found that the fuel pump fuse was melting. the contact called a local dealer (moyer ford sales inc., 10111 state highway 59 s, directions foley, al 36535, (888) 699-3441) but was unable to speak with anyone. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was approximately 67,000.

On april 14, 2018 i was driving my 2013 f-150 on the highway approximately 70mph in the rain when the back wheels suddenly locked up and i abruptly began stopping and i lost control, fishtailing to the left and right (almost to a spin), barely missing vehicles around me and the wall to the left. the car behind me somehow veered around and missed me too. as this was happening the truck was making a loud noise as it automatically slowed down. i somehow made it to the side of the road where i parked and shut the truck off and tried to settle down and gain my composure (...it was scary, i thought i was going to die from this incident!). i restarted the truck and slowly began drive. it seemed to drive ok so i decided to take the truck to the dealer for service. as i was driving cautiously, well below the speed limit on a 40mph road the engine then shut down and i could see a screen appear with "low oil pressure". i glided to a parking lot and had my truck towed to the dealer where i purchased the truck (suburban ford of waterford michigan). the dealer said there was a knock in the engine and said it threw a rod. they said the engine failure was the result of the wheels locking up. i researched and found the exact same issue on 2013 f-150's with the transmission automatically downshifting to a low gear causing the rear wheels to lock up. the dealer said they were aware of this and said there is a recall for this on 2011 and 2012 f-150's for this but no recall presently active on the 2013 f-150. i purchased a full warranty for the truck when new but the truck is just out of warranty at 110k miles. the dealer said they could provide a refurbished engine for $10,000. i've been going back and forth with ford and the dealer at this point. this is a very dangerous life threatening issue. see: http://autoweek.com/article/recalls/fords-downshifting-recall-may-expand

Engine will shut off while driving, all power to steering is lost. if i can't drive off the road it is stuck on traffic. ford know what is causing the loss off engine power and must buy a relocation fix kit to fix the issue.

Transmission malfunction, will not engage when vehicle is stopped. seems like it is stuck in 5th gear. odo reads ------, airbag and seat belt light comes on. speedometer goes to zero. when i turn engine off and back on, it operates normal for a few miles. was almost t-boned by semi this morning because the transmission would not engage when i pulled into intersection.

My f150 stalls in traffic the engine light comes on and wench light comes on then engine lose power and have to stop and turn engine off and restart. had it at dealer they told me the plugs needed replaced they did it but didn,t help still doing the same thing cost me 475.00 dollars, does all these things in motion still not fixed parked right now afraid to drive it

Had to buy a new engine! the truck started running rough on the drive home from work on friday, april 6. on saturday morning, april 7, i took it to get gas. after filling my tank, the truck would not start back up. i had to have it towed from the gas station. towed it to keller ford, grand rapids, mi. codes p0011, p0016, p0017, p0019, p0021, p0172, p0175, p0299, p0313, p0365, p0369, p0390, p0394, p0430 and p052c. the technician also performed a power balance test and a compression test, it was determined half the engine had zero compression and the other half had lowered compression. all of these results indicated the truck needed a full engine replacement. $7,650 for the new engine. a vehicle with 80,000 miles and only 5 years old should not need a new engine. a mechanic told us this is a problem and he replaces an engine on these ford trucks at least a few times a month. we had the engine replaced at sulforce automotive, grandville, mi

With a hard acceleration the truck blogged down & the engine service light came on. i thought the engine shut off so i pulled it down into 1st gear & it took off again. still sputters like there is water in the gas or something. light will not go off. pretty dangerous in heavy traffic. it actually didn't have any power what so ever. pretty scary. i read there were several complaints of the same situation. why has ford taken care of this as a recall?

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving approximately 70 mph, all the warning indicators on the instrument panel illuminated and the brake pedal became very stiff. the contact started pumping the brake pedal until the vehicle stopped. the vehicle was driven to kalispell ford in kalispell, montana where it was diagnosed that the engine vacuum pump failed and needed replacement. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 64,000. *tt right after repair contact drove home and brakes went out again. vehicle was turned off and started again in which brakes came back into full use. dealership was notified and kept vehicle for a week in which the failure was reproduced. ford does not want to pay for repairs. *tt

Truck has stalled many times i brought it to ford dealership and they say they can't find anything wrong, but it still stalls. it's happened on the highway, county street ,city street . it started march of 2018 truck has 50,000 miles the first time it happened.

Dining acceleration the truck would sputter in higher rpm then just recently i would be doing 70 mph down the highway and i would get a service light with power reduction which in turn would require me to pull over shut the truck off restart it and try again. i would get back up to speed and it would repeat. each time only getting about a mile up the road and it would repeat. took the truck into the dealer as it was still in warranty the first time and they ignored the p2112 code and replaced a totally different sensor.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving various speeds, the front end of the vehicle shook and vibrated and the rear end of the vehicle became unstable and swayed from side to side. the vehicle was taken to werner hyundai in tallahassee, fl where it was diagnosed that the leaf springs were faulty and needed to be replaced. the parts were not available and the vehicle was not repaired. later, while the vehicle was parked, a loud air pressure type noise was heard under the hood. the contact discovered oil had leaked from the engine. the vehicle was towed back to the dealer, but no failures related to an oil leak were found. the manufacturer was not notified of the failures. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 92,000.

My ford f150 experienced a coolant system leak similar to recalls for other ford models (https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2017/03/29/ford-issues-three-safety-recalls-and-one-safety-compliance-recal.html). the problem is so bad with ford trucks around my model year that there is a nationwide backorder of the part to fix the problem. the coolant system's "t connector" was leaking onto my wiring harness and presented a potential fire hazard much like the recall notice for similar ford vehicles. simply search "2013 ford f150 coolant leak" and the t connector problem is at the top of the search results. ford dealers and mechanic shops are aware of the design flaw, but ford motor co will not address it as a recall at this time. this needs to be remedied. the leak was occurring when the vehicle was running and in motion.

Timing chain / timing chain tensioner defect in 2012-2014 ecoboost engine. vehicle's timing chain loses tension and needs to be replaced at low mileage. very costly repair, with estimated 13 hours labor. design defect is being reported by more and more owners of vehicles with ecoboost engines released between 2012-2014. ford motor corrected design defect in later models, but did not notify current owners or provide path to resolution if after 5 year/60k warranty.

Driving on interstate 422 i went to pass a tractor trailer my ford f150 with 3.5 ecoboost lost all engine power and would only idle i had to avoid traffic to get back in slow lane and to the side of the road. my dash display had a big yellow wrench i turned off the truck and restated engine with no problems after restart

1. loss of brakes resulting in pedal going all way to floor at 35 mph city. recall 16s24 but ford dealership is saying my vehicle is not included 2. loss of engine power while attempting to merge onto highway at 65 mph, this has occurred three times. 3. recall 19s07: brought into dealership, stated they don't have the software yet to remedy the problem of sudden power train downshift prime ford 857 portland rd saco maine 04072 service manager :stacey drummey 207-571-5035
