Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2013 Ford F-150

Intermittent rear defroster on occasion. while sitting in driveway attempting to get rear defroster to operate the back drivers side glass shattered. sounded like a bullet/rock hit window but impossible due to direction of window as it was facing the back of the garage. seemed odd but when i investigated through my dealership they claimed to have heard of the rear defroster causing this but because it was glass and not covered to contact ford. i contacted ford and they advised me that no records of anything like this were on file and that there was no way to prove that the window was broken by the defroster thus it was not covered by my warranty or extended warranty. since this is a power three glass window with defroster it will need full replacement at a cost of over $1000 with no guarantee it will not happen again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle lost power and stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to restart on the first attempt. in addition, once the vehicle restarted, the speedometer failed to work and the wrench warning sensor illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 29,000.

I bought my truck new from the dealer 2013. i'm consistent with all the up keeps of my truck. however, mid august 2016, i noticed the truck hesitated to start at the beginning while in stationary position for a few days, then out of nowhere from one day to the next, the engine didn't start in the morning again while in stationary position and then the engine light came up! i bought a new battery thinking that maybe it needed to be replaced, even with the new battery the truck failed to start in stationary. after that, i tried starting my truck for two consecutive days, by the third day the truck started! i drove it immediately to autozone but nothing came up wrong with it? so, i drove it back home. a week later, i had no problems with the truck, like nothing ever happen. then, yesterday all of a sudden i was driving home, while in motion the engine died in the middle of traffic on a city street, so i pulled over to the side of the road and immediately attempted to restart the truck as it continued to hesitate. finally, after 10 minutes the truck started and i drove to autozone and again nothing came up wrong with it. so i drove it back home. then, today, which is september 2, 2016 while the truck is stationary it failed to start and the engine light, came up again. something is wrong with this truck! i don't feel safe to drive in fear that my truck will stop working while in motion and cause an accident. i can get stranded anywhere at anytime.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. the contact stated that both the rear driver and passenger doors would not unlock and could not be opened from inside or outside the vehicle. in addition, the door failed to open with the remote access fob. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 50,400.

While driving my 2013 ford platinum f-150 at approximately 35 mph going straight on a town road heading to the highway, the wrench service light came and and instantly putting the truck into "limp" mode only allowing me to drive 5 mph. i am lucky not to be in highway traffic. i did have my family with me heading on a 5 hour journey. completely unsafe! after a few restarts the same wrench light came on as well as the check engine light. and again the vehicle went into limp mode allowing me to drive 5mph. the grieco ma ford dealer said it was a failed throttle body, vehicle only has 55k miles on it and has been serviced regularly at the aforementioned ford dealer! i hope this safety issue gets recalled so no one will ever have to go through the situation like i did ever again!

The truck will not crank at times. vehicle stationary, it will make no sound, or movement, motor does not turn.

Battery warning light comes. head lights, interior lights, and instrument panel lights surge. battery is dead the next morning when i go to start my truck. be to four garages two where ford certified garages.

Truck stalled momentarily while negotiating an intersection. i pulled into a parking lot to check for issues. when i tried to re-start the truck it would turn over but wouldn't start. i checked the owners manual for the procedure to re-set the fuel shut off switch because i thought it may have been activated by something. truck still would not start after following procedure. i had the truck towed to hunt ford in franklin ky. a service technician called me the next day to inform me that the fuel pump relay had melted and that ford had issued a technical bulletin about the issue and a fix for it which included installing an inline fuse to keep the relay from melting again. the repair cost $210 and the service tech told me that my truck was second one that they had fixed with this same issue that day! while it wasn't a safety issue for me, it definitely has the potential to be one.

The truck will down shift while driving. it has happened a few times now. i was driving about 30mph and experienced a drop in power and the gauges started jumping all over. it also dropped to 1st gear when i was on the highway doing 70 mph. it felt like someone threw the e-break. quick jerking motion. i had to pull over and shut the truck off. thankfully my family was not in the vehicle and no one was directly behind me. the few other times it happened i noticed something going wrong so i quickly pulled off the road and shut it down. turning it off seemed to "reset" things and let me get home. i had a diagnostic ran and it coded #4 spark plug and #4 coil. i had both of those replaced - and experienced the same issue the very next day! ran another diagnostic and it coded the same way! took it to a ford dealership to check it out and their final answer was "needs a new engine". it has 110k miles on it and i bought it less than 1 year ago and it needs a new engine? i have $700 wrapped up in replacing parts that did not need replacing and diagnostics that did not give me a realistic solution. this does not sound like an engine issue- sounds very similar to the recent recall on the 2011-2012 models. truck is parked in the driveway. no one in my family will be driving it. hope to hear that ford recognizes the bigger issue here and steps up to take care of this.

Rear window was rolled down while 2 1/2 year old child had his arm against the interior door, where it meets the bottom of the window. the skin of the child's forearm was sucked into the vehicle's door. child was trapped until window was rolled back up. bruising occurred but the skin was not broken. vehicle was stationary and parked in a lot.

I was driving and made a right turn and the power steering gave out for a few seconds. then once i straightened back out i could not reproduce the problem. this has happened several times but can happen when turning either way.

Used remote start on my pickup in below freezing weather at roughly 28. came out to drive to work and rear driver side back window had spider web cracks throughout the glass.

Rear window shattered while rear defrost was on, in 35 degree temperature. car was parked and stationary, in covered parking unit, driven 10-miles from home to work. loud bang heard, and immediately saw the shattered glass in the driver side rear-view window. this has clearly happened many times prior, and this has been attributed to faulty defrost system.

I was driving down a very dangerous highway pass going approximately 65 mph when my engine stalled as random alarms started appearing on my dashboard, then my steering locked from the engine being off. i tried the best i could to get on the shoulder as i had no steering ability and i stepped on the brakes fairly hard. i was lucky because this was the only place in miles with a shoulder. anywhere else on this road and i could have been seriously injured or died. while on the side of the road i smelled a tiny bit of burning plastic with no problem in sight. i googled what happened on a special forum website for ford raptor owners and others had the same thing happen with fuse 27. which is for the fuel pump. so i checked the number 27 fuse and sure enough it had melted, i actually had to take it out of the fuse box in melted pieces with pliers. the fuse melted while driving so the fuel pump shut off causing my engine to stall and steering to lock. many many others have had his happen and ford recognizes it as a service bulletin. however this needs to be more then a service bulletin when someone's life could be taken driving the freeway or dangerous road. we were lucky there was no collision, injuries, or fire, however it could have very well caused an electrical fire and if someone was on a crowded freeway in rush hour a collision is almost certain.

Rear window does not open and rear-defrost no longer works. potential for the rear window to explode because of the electrical problem. service bulletin no. asi-32259, ford reports, 'a power sliding rear window, on some vehicles, may experience a possible inoperative rear-window defrost. (models 2010-2013 f-150.)

Intermittent problems with the rear defrost last couple of months. then, last night, the temperature was about 20f. i turned rear defrost on and the light for the defroster went out and wouldn't turn back on. a couple of minutes later, i heard a loud bang from the back and the passenger's side stationary window pane was shattered.

Rear window electric defrost was activated by factory remote start system. apparent defroster overheat or short circuit caused the left panel of the three panel sliding window to explode, resulting in a loud band and spider webbed panel resulting in glass shards in my child's booster seat. ford does not acknowledge the problem and provided no assistance at the local dealer or ford customer service. truck was stationary at time of event.

2013 f150 ford parked outside on driveway. sunny with temperature roughly 32 degrees fahrenheit. remote start used to warm up truck. walking out to truck when a loud bang/gunshot type of sound happened without warning. walked around truck and saw that driver's side of the power sliding rear window (3 sections) had started to spider crack. this part of the window then continued to crack until the whole section was spider cracked. (the sharp edges of glass were on the inside of vehicle window.) the vehicle was taken to dealer for evaluation but was told it is out of warranty. the dealer estimated replacement cost is $1,200-1,300 usd. (parts and labor).

I'm requesting the nhtsa investigate f150 accelerator pedals that are placed too closely to the cabin floor vent. the cabin floor vent on the driver side is perpendicular and to the right of the accelerator pedal at a distance of 3.5 inches. my foot is wider than the pedal, so when my foot is resting on the accelerator it is only 1-2 inches from the vent. since my foot is directly in front of the vent, it blocks all airflow. setting the floor vents on heat means that hot air blows directly on the outside edge of my right foot. within 1-2 minutes of activation, my foot becomes uncomfortably warm from the barrage of hot air. the result is a painful, burning sensation and extreme physical discomfort in my foot. using an infrared thermometer, i gathered temperature readings of the air exiting the vents. the ac was set to maximum heat. all readings were taken while the truck was idle. outside temperatures were 30 f. the thermometer measured temperatures in excess of 140 f from all vents. the reading of the vent next to the accelerator was 141.5f. i placed an empty shoe on the accelerator and left it there for 3 minutes. readings of the shoe while on the accelerator were in excess of 120f. i removed the shoe from accelerator and took readings after it cooled for 3 seconds. the shoe's temperature was 115f. the shoe remained warm to the touch for several minutes. leaving the vents at the same settings, i took measurements of the bare skin of my hands and arms. temperature readings were between 89-91f. skin can be burned in a relatively short period of time when exposed to temperatures in excess of 120f. my own discomfort confirms this. i contacted 3 ford dealers regarding this problem and explained my findings. two dealers said that the pedals in my model ford were nonadjustable, so the issue was not actionable. i also contacted ford directly. so far no solution.

Remote started my 2013 f-150 raptor and it ran in the drive way for 3-4 min. started down the road and turned on the rear defrost. after about 2 min, the rear window popped and shattered behind me. after researching, looks to be a known issue that ford seems to not want to acknowledge. i called them today and the customer service rep acted like he did not know of any past issues. hopefully this will get the attention it needs soon.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. when the ignition was turned to the on position, the vehicle did not start. the contact observed that the connector detached from the positive side of the battery post. after several attempts, the vehicle restarted. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. the maufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 36,500.

Rear window defroster works intermittently. after doing research and reading many forums i learned there is a contact in rear window that has shorted out and caused many rear window sections to pop and shatter the glass. when i turn my rear defrost on most of the time it doesn't work but when it does i am afraid the glass will break like it had for so many others. this had also caused me not to use it when my kids are in the truck.

Discovered my rear defrost was not working one morning, brought the truck to my local ford dear where i purchased the truck. was informed that there was a short in the rear window glass and it needed to be replaced.

Power rear middle window shattered when truck was sitting still in parking lot. rear window defroster was on while driving truck. windshield wiper come on every twenty seconds with switch in off position

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while making a turn at approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle resumed normal operation shortly after the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 22,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was able to restart; however, the failure immediately recurred. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 53,000.

Vehicle hesitation with jerking and loss of momentum when lightly accelerating at speeds between 60 mph and 70 mph when hot. dealer determined this was caused by the spark plugs and boots and changed them out at 48k miles. dealer maintenance book lists changing out the spark plugs and boots at 100k miles which a gross underestimated maintenance schedule. this is miss leading to the buyer for expected repair costs and dangerous for the owner while on the road and dangerous to other motorist because of the unexpected loss of momentum and jerking of the vehicle.

I had just exited the freeway and was at a red light when the truck message board read shift to park , i did that and the truck basically shut down , flashing both a service advancetrac message as well as a start system fault message. the hazard lights would not work nor any signal in the vehicle, the radio, dome lights worked but the keyless remote keys were not working. so we called ford roadside assistance and was stuck on the bottom of a freeway off ramp for 3 hours with no hazard lights functional i had to pop the hood and open my driver side door and stand outside of the truck to let other drivers know we were stalled it was a very nerve racking experience i'm just thankful nobody hit us as were basically just sitting ducks at the bottom of a busy freeway off ramp. please fix this issue before some one gets killed.

My first incident on my truck was total loss of power steering with no warning, dealer said it was electrical issue. next was stopped at a light and my rear window shattered, glass company said they have done a ton of these and was due to a short in rear defrost causing the window to shatter? ford dealer stated they didn't know if it would be warranted that send in s photo to ford to be determined warranty or not ? *tr

I started my truck with remote start to warm up when i got in truck i turned the rear defrost on and my drivers side back glass shattered temperature out was 42degrees truck was in garage my little girl was in car seat in the middle what if glass would have gotten it her eyes just glade it shattered and didn't blow up. *tr

Using the factory remote, i started the 2013 ford f150 for first time of the day 12/18/14 and entered vehicle 5 minutes later. put key in column ignition. did not touch any controls. with the transmission still in park, a very loud noise occurred. one section of the rear window / backlite had shattered top to bottom, edge to edge. the outdoor temperature was 24f, the heat setting was 67f. vehicle was backed into driveway with garage behind. nothing could have hit the window from the outside and the vehicle hadn't moved, yet the glass practically exploded. there are dozens of very similar experiences shared on several internet forums involving years 2010 forward of the same model truck -- same generation. ford has not created a tsb and there isn't a recall, and ford has made no indication that they will do anything about it. they referred me back to a dealer to document the damage. local ford dealer told me afterward that the rear window defrost turns on automatically with the remote start feature. now driver visibility is obscured and i'm concerned about the safety of the electrical heating element. reportedly fires have occurred with this situation. i won't be using the rear defrost under any circumstances -- even in northern illinois, in the winter. it seems most owners have been denied warranty claims because ford stated the damage was to glass, which isn't covered under the warranty. the glass isn't the problem, its the evidence. ford said it is up to the dealer to determine if the damage is due to a manufacturer's defect to get replacement under warranty. the dealer service manager told me they submit a warranty claim with photos to ford which will either approve or deny the claim. the dealer quoted $800.00 installed to replace the entire backlite assembly. the two different stories are troubling. i'm already preparing myself for the run-around. *tr

Rear defogger overheated and shattered rear glass window. rear window eventually started to fall out. this is a real safety issue in bad weather. ford has no recall as of today and a lot of these rear windows are being shattered. *tr

The back right drivers side rear window shattered due to the wiring or the rear window defroster.this has happened twice on 12/10/14 and 3/27/15.this is a known defect that ford has not addressed yet. *tr

Vehicle sputtered and stalled while slowing down on freeway. after towing to dealer, dealer could only find loose battery cable. 2 days later engine stalled again while accelerating on freeway with same symptoms. vehicle will not start and is with dealer who initially said no issues can be found. vehicle symptoms match description of "limp mode". *tr

My 2013 ford f150 has had two dead batteries since i purchased in july of 2013 brand new. the first one happened nov of 2014, they put in a new battery and the second in feb 2015 ford dealer can't seem to find anything wrong so they basically just put in a new battery, currently 15k miles. ., but there is a power draw somewhere. this can leave me and my family stranded some where, not safe! *tr

Upon turning off the ignition the starter kicked on and wouldn't stop. got truck out of garage. it died in the driveway. saw smoke and sparks. opened the hood and saw a small fire under the engine block. called fd but had it out by the time they arrived. *tr

As i tried to accelerate to pass a vehicle the motor in my truck started to miss, the check engine light flashed on and off and i was not able to accelerate. the motor proceeded to idle even though i was pushing in the gas pedal. after about 15 seconds of no response to the gas pedal being pushed the entire truck started shaking as though it was about to fall apart. another 30 seconds later and everything went back to normal. this occurred in a 2013 f-150 with the ecoboost motor. *js

2013 ford f-150. consumer writes in regards to airbag system, cruise control system and other electrical issues. *smd the consumer stated he returned the vehicle to the dealer twice, for the issues. the dealer failed to identify any electrical faults in the air bag system. a month later, during service on the air bags, the horn failed to operate. *jb

Only happened once but i tired to use the key fob to unlock the doors. it did not do anything for the truck, none of the buttons would. unlocked the door with the key had to start it before the alarm went off. locked it grabbed the spare key came back a few minutes later the same thing happened. neither key that came with the truck would respond, dealership could verify the problem. *tr

My 2013 ford f150 xlt began flashing a warning saying service advancetrac. then it immediately begins flashing shift to park. the truck then begins to downshift causing a rapid slowing of the truck.. when i get to the side of the road to stop i hear metal on metal grinding noises from the engine compartment that i believe is the transmission trying to shift to park... the truck then loses all blinkers and flashers as well as all lighting on the instrument panel. i was able to drive it to a safe location off the road this time.. the truck randomly continues this and its been in the shop several times and they say nothing is wrong with it. i finally got fed up and began video of the dash display in order to document my safety and problems. this truck is 9 months old and has 14000 miles on it. it has done it again and all electrical systems would not reboot and left me stranded for a long time. we have been driving on i95 at 75mph during holiday traffic and it happened again and we literally thought we would be killed because cars had to slam on brakes to avoid our disabled car. it was even scarier since my 6month old daughter was in the vehicle then.we are at a loss because ford has completely ignored the problem and just assumes i will stop making them fix this at some point. i'm in a 1 car family and bought this to accommodate my new baby and have her a safe ride...this problem is dangerous and it is going to hurt or kill someone if its left unaddressed. [xxx] at jim hudson ford service has told me he knows its something wrong with it but ford will not allow him to fix it under the warranty terms for new trucks. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Driving and truck died, without power, brakes, steering difficult., no dash lights, no hazard lights, nothing. tried to restart, nothing, pushed it out of highway. used car dealer, replaced pcm? now it drives, engine light on. taking to dealer, first available appointment next week. 28,000 miles f150 2013 4x4 pickup. only getting 13.5 mpg without trailer, worse with. not happy. *tr

Since approximately 5700 miles, when i take long trips in the vehicle (30+ miles), the tpms light will come on with a message saying ?tire pressure sensor fault.? if i continue driving the light will eventually turn off and occasionally come back on in the trip. the light has always come on at freeway speeds. the truck has been brought into the service department multiple times without any guaranteed fix. the service department did replace a faulty, non-responsive tpms sensor, but the problem continues. the issues usually occurs at night, but has happened in the daytime. *tr

When out to truck in the morning to clean snow off. i retrieved a pair of gloves out of the backseat and nothing was out of the ordinary. it was approximately 7 degrees f outside. i then went inside and remote started the truck. after a few minutes i went to get in the truck, looked in the rear view and noticed the middle, sliding rear window was open. i turned around and found that the center glass was broken and had shattered into the truck. the two side panels were both completely shattered and still intact. i took the truck to the dealer and asked the parts and service department if this was something they had heard of. i told them i felt like the rear defroster combined with the cold exploded the window. they said they had never heard of that. the vehicle is currently at the dealership being repaired at a cost of $1,420. i have filed a complaint with ford and am awaiting a call back as they opened a case number for me. as this stands now it looks like it will come out of pocket and will be filed against insurance. *tr

Vehicle would repeat law battery message. took to dealer battery tests good. vehicle would sometimes die overnight with a no start condition in mourning. 6 dealer visits and one new battery, "no problem found" from dealer. this vehicle could strand you at any time. i have a open case from ford but problem continues. *tr

As of january 28, 2013 my 2013 f-150 has continually had electrical issues resulting in a dead battery that has not been corrected as of today, 3/10/2014. error messages that arise include " battery saver on' and "audio off" indicators and after jumpstarting the vehicle will start with the key in the "on" position and in some cases such as mine, the vehicle will not shift out of 5th gear until the ignition is cycled off and then on again. over the course of the previous 2.5 months i have had my vehicle in the dealership service department 6 times totaling over 30+ days. this vehicle has left me stranded on multiple occasions requiring me to find someone to jumpstart it each time. there are an increasing number of complaints on this year model for the exact same issue with no resolution from ford. i have utilized every possible avenue to get this issue resolved and am hoping that by filing this complaint i can bring greater attention to an issue that is affecting a growing portion of f-150 owners. *tr

Repeated problems with check engine light, reduced power, and poor gas mileage. the 2013 ford f150 xlt crew cab with 3.5 v6 ecoboost has had repeated problems with the check engine light appearing at engine startup or while driving at city or highway speeds. the cel stays on for several days then disappears. if the check engine light is on the engine goes into limp mode with reduced power and gets extremely poor gas mileage of 11 mpg. the vehicle has been serviced by 2 different ford dealerships 7 times for the same problem. the last service took 13 days 12/20/2013-1/3/2014. a case was opened with ford on 12/14/2013 and assigned to a ford regional rep. ford refuses to buy back the defective vehicle and asks that the truck be taken back to a ford dealership until the problem is resolved. this is a safety issue in that the driver will think there is an engine problem, brake or reduce speed and potentially cause an accident. the reduced engine power during cel is a safety risk. copies of shop invoices and case number from ford are available upon request. *tr

Very noticeable popping/bouncing/knocking of steering wheel/column when going over bumps. occurs at all speeds and all steering angles. *tr

This is a serious problem and a major safety issue!!! i experienced this twice last weekend on a major highway. i was driving (25mph) and all of a sudden the truck began shuddering and went into limp mode. i couldn't go more than 5 mph and almost caused and accident. the dealer was closed, so i disconnected the battery and after reconnecting it the truck ran fine, until later that night when the same thing happened but at 70mph. once again the only thing to do was disconnect the battery (to reset everything). the truck was taken into the dealer first thing monday morning just to be told that nothing is wrong with it. *tr

After a prolonged period (8+ hours) of driving at highway speeds in frequent rain the vehicle shuddered and stalled (without completely dying) while in a passing maneuver. the service engine light flashed multiple times then went out. as a consequence of the power loss my vehicle was unresponsive to accelerator input and resulted in compromised safety between two rapidly converging vehicles. after approximately 10 -15 seconds the engine resumed normal operation. *tr

This is the 5th incident with the same problem, but worst now. i had this truck at the ford dealership on monday june 17,2013. they said it will be hard to diagnosis without a fault code. how is it they can tell me how fast i have been driving for the past month, but the inboard computer cannot tell ford technicians what is wrong.the engine cut off again for the 5th time, but this time it would not start. the instrument showed 2 icon's this time, a ( wrench and check oil ), i'm sorry but the wrench indicates i believe something to do with a rear end on a 4 x 4 truck, sorry this is only a 2 wheel drive vehicle. i tried the ( 2 ) recommendation in the instruction book and when turned the ignition to start it only tried for less than 3 seconds, then the power to the ignition went blank. i tried for 30 minutes, then called ford road side assistant for a tow truck, which was dispatched within a hour. i had already called ford friday june 21,2013 for an appointment for # 3 & 4 with the engine cutting off. i then called saturday morning and asking then for a better appointment, they gave me one for monday 6-23,2013 instead of tuesday 6-24-2013.i badly need transportation this next week, i'm going to ask ford for ambulance service this next coming friday june 28,2013, i am a disabled senior veteran and having hip injections next friday out of town at the veterans hospital and need a care giver, since i won't be able to drive after the procedure.ford this is beginning to be a very serious condition when driving and probably cause accidents very soon. lets get the problem fixed or order me a new truck because of north carolina lemon law. *tr
