Problems with 2013 Ford F-150 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

On average, the 2013 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and its various aspects after 61 750 miles.

Components Affected by ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Issues

We have classified the 196 complaints from 2013 Ford F-150 about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.

IGNITION 2 WIRING 1 12V/24V/48V BATTERY 1

Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2013 Ford F-150

2013 f150 downshifted from 6th gear to 1st gear while traveling approximately 50 mph. this resulted in the tires locking up as if i had slammed on the brakes. it now continues to shift erratically from 1st to 6th to 3rd. it also gets stuck in 1st gear and then will randomly shift normally and then downshift back to first gear. this has been happening frequently for some time with hard shifting but this is the first time it has dropped from 6th gear to first gear. this is definitely a safety issue and i am finding it difficult to have any nearby ford dealerships take a look at it within the next two weeks.

The transmission will down shift into a 1st or 2nd gear unexpectedly. this has happened several times while moving at 40 to 50 mph. also the transmission will up shift and downshift randomly causing the vehicle difficult to control. when this happens the speedometer will jump around and sometimes completely shut off. when the truck is turned of then turned on again the gauges will work again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact restarted the vehicle and was able to drive home. upon reaching home, the vehicle would not restart after numerous attempts. the vehicle was towed to gulf coast ford (3000 state highway 288, angleton, texas 77515, (713) 422-7200) where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump fuse within the fuse box melted. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided the contact with case number: cas-16321706. in addition, the contact referenced tsb number: 15-0137 as a potential cause of the failure. the failure mileage was 82,596. *dt updated 12/20/18*jb

Fuel pump fuse is prone to failure due to design flaw. ford is aware and a service bulletin has been issued. also a 'fuse 27 relocation kit' available. this failure causes the fuel system to fail without warning and causes the vehicle to stop operating. a recall should be done or offer of free repair should be available.

Billy cain ford sold a truck to me as low mileage with no carfax damage. salesman tom chacko promised a carfax report at closing. he failed to produce the report upon delivery to me at work. tom vowed the truck had no damages. carfax/auto check showed 4 brake failures and 2 alternator failures. greene ford verified flood damage 12-11-18. tom chacko denied their findings 12-12-18, requested written report. lemon squad documented flood damage 12-26-18. all three reports show consistent flood damage. jason pirkle warranty/finance manager refused to repair failed emissions stating they were not covered under my extended warranty purchase. the emissions coded 170mi after purchase indicating that code was reset before my purchase. the emissions damage was covered under emissions performance warranty coverage federal mandate. greene ford gladly repaired the emissions with no issues. jason pirkle presented the truck to wells fargo bank, state farm insurance, and ford motor warranty division as undamaged value. the truck only has salvage value because of the flood damage. over $5000 in repairs and 34 days in the repair shop. the truck has massive electrical issues from flood damage. i have not driven the truck since 12-11-2018. major efforts were taken to deceive the buyer of this truck. if billy cain ford had presented the truck truthfully i would have never purchased the truck. billy cain ford did a purchase inspection, maintenance service inspection, and complete detail so they had knowledge of flood damage. a registered mail request for buy back was sent to cody cain 1-17-2019 and he not responded to the request. billy cain ford has not made a honest written offer to resolve this issue to date.

The fuel pump fuse (fuse 27) overheats and burns out resulting in the entire truck shutting off at speeds. this happened to me at 65 mph on a highway leaving me with no engine at that speed.

Rack an pinion defect. all over the forums same run of truck between 2011 and 2013 with traction and hill decent mode errors loss of power steering in bad situations like on highway. ford dealer acknowledged many complaints but ford will not honor repair. my blinker failed power steering locks up and ford says have to replace whole system

Takata recall , the rear defrost does not work and it has happened to multiple people where the rear glass explodes. i have disconnected the cable connecting the rear defrost to stop it from heating up but it is a common issue on 2013 ford f-150 trucks. if the cable connecting the rear defrost behind the driver side is disconnected the light for the rear defrost works and the side mirrors work but once connected again nothing works

Battery went dead, after charging it the moonroof will not close tightly. tried to reset it, it just bounces back. it was parked in my driveway.

Three times in the last two months this has happened to me. while accelerating from a stop on a city street the truck will jerk forward and backward chirping the tires like it's slipping gears. while this is happening if i give it gas either it won't rev up or it will rev up but not accelerate almost like it's in neutral. also, the speedometer drops down to zero and bounces up and down even while the truck is moving when this happens. my wife refuses to drive the vehicle until the problem is corrected and quite frankly i don't feel safe driving it either. i find it terrible that ford has not included the 2013 vehicles into the recall of the earlier models suffering from the same defects.

Dash panel shuts off,30 sec later heater on full blast.won't turn off.fcdim bad according to dealership.on back order.dealer admits many similar issues.filed complaint with ford.suggested notifying nhtsa.truck on road less than 4 years, out of warranty,no way should part be defective.$1000 repair.very common issue should be recall.90+summer temp with heater full blast with no controls operating. no radio, hazards, climate control, traction control, hill descent, clock, temp, back lighting all off but heater full blast.was driving truck on the highway during 90+ outside temp and rain. couldn't put windows down due to rain, too hot to breathe.had to pull over to wait out the rain.part on backorder removed fuse in order to drive but heat still comes into vehicle but fan isn't blowing without fuse.

Vehicle power suddenly shutdown while driving down the freeway. after pulling to the side of the road, engine would only idle. engine would not rev up to a higher rpms. vehicle required towing to a repair center. the following 2 issues were found: 1. throttle body needed replaced. 2. fuel pump electrical circuit was heat damaged. the repair center told me they are starting to see more of these type of issues on these vehicles. the repair center moved this circuit away from the heat source causing the damage. this appears to be a design issue which could pose a safety problem. a recall should be issued for this problem.

On the 2012 and 2013 model year f150 with rear window defrost it is very common for the electrical wiring or connection to fail and literally blow out the back window. it also affects the heated mirrors if the truck has that option too. when the rear window blows out it can literally blow holes put of the glass. with kids having to ride in the back this is not safe. the rear defrost will work fine or malfunction a couple times and then will eventually fail and break/blow the window out. it is a very well known problem that ford is doing nothing about. i've contacted ford and they refuse to fix it.

The fuel management system blew the fuse. i looked online and saw where many people have had this happen and ford has a service advisory issued for this problem but charge the owner with making the correction to the defective wiring. they do not simply replace the mini 10 amp fuse but instead replace a part of the wiring and relocate it to a standard 20 amp fuse. when i explained my concern about engineering a fuel management system for a 10 amp rating and switching it to the 20 amp which could allow other parts of the system to overload he basically told me that ford had decided this was how they would fix the problem but now i have the concern other components of the system failing and sure enough it was less than two weeks later the fuel pump driver module failed causing my vehicle to stop running. the service manager also told me i was lucky as he had seen total melt downs of fuse panels from this defect. this has cost me $805 in repairs due to a faulty wiring design. the vehicle was stationary at the time, once in a parking lot and once in my driveway.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 25 mph, the vehicle was shifted into third gear and decelerated on its own. the contact stated that the tachometer and speedometer ceased to display and the instrument panel went blank. the dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failures. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 102,000.

I shut my engine off, dump trash and it would not start. the engine turned over, but not start. waited a few, minutes, started up. next day, the engine shut off while driving, got it off the road, waited a few minutes, started up. before i could get home, the engine died again. finally restarted it got it home and had it towed to a ford dealership. after waiting 5 days for repair i informed the service manager what i thought the problem was after reading 17 pages of 56, i found 11 instances that mirror my problem. burnt fuel pump fuse. had to be relocated at a cost of $249.19. this is very dangerous.

Rear defrost button quit working while in my driveway heated sliding back glass and heated mirrors stopped working as well and fuse is good. i can't afford to get it all replaced it should be replaced by ford free of charge

Truck shifts into low gear at higher rates of speed and all gauges shut off, its a 720 code, output speed sensor circuit, ford had a recall that went to march of 2012 and mine was built in october and not covered under the recall, this is a safety issue and you could loose control at anytime when it start to down shift when going 70mph

Once the truck is idling, after a few moments a wrench logo is displayed and all the tach gauges turn off and the acceleration is sluggish. sometimes when driving the truck doesn't leave 1st gear or it'll bounce around gears. when the truck is turned off and then turned back on, everything can go right back to nornal. having this issue is a major safety issue if the vehicle stalls in traffic or worse. many reports are made on the internet's and i haven't seen a recall. funny how the 2011-12 models have an oasis on it but not the 2013 granted it's plagued by the same issue.

Sudden downshift into 1st gear at highway speeds. speedometer and digital display stops working.

Vehicle exhibited a crank non-start condition. fuse 27 was examined and found to be melted. these two observations satisfy ford's conditions of tsb 15-0137. ford knows this is an issue with their design and offers a fuse relocation kit (el3z-14293-a). the fuse was melted from poor fuse box contact design. thankfully, this happened on startup and not while the truck was in motion.

Around 100k miles. truck all of a sudden started to hard shift. eventually would throw orange wrench light and speedometer would quit working and would have trouble getting the speed up as if it werent shifting. air bag light will come and stay on. a reboot would take these problems away temporarily. i've read same owners have experienced same issues online on the f150 forum.

Driving in traffic friday of the long memorial day weekend, traveling at 75mph, no warning my f150 stalls. finally get pulled all the way to the shoulder. after sitting for an hour and getting help, it was found that the fuse for the fuel relay had melted. 50 cent part could have caused a deadly crash! why is there not a recall on this? mechanic that worked on my f150 said this is about the 12th one he had worked on. i also see that ford has issued a tsb on this exact same problem.

My 2013 ford f150 will shift into different gears while driving causing the truck to lock up. i was driving 65 mph down the interstate this morning when it shifted into 1st gear causing my tires to lock up and skid all over the road. luckily i was able to get it off the road before crashing. i have heard this is the output speed sensor which has happened to millions of other f150's. why has this not been recalled?? this is a major safety hazard! https://www.slashgear.com/ford-faces-1m-recall-expansion-over-worrying-transmission-flaw-02513360/

I have file with you about this before and it has been a recall for this problem but the ford company has not taken care of this problem nor have they taken care of a second recall for another problem with this truck both of these problems together have almost cause 3 very near accidents for me the most recent i was pulling a trailer and entering and on ramp to interstate i-94 on entering as normal i tried to exhilarate to highway speed when all of a sudden all power to the drive train stopped and the truck went into a natural mode (like pushing the clutch in on a standard shift transmission) at that point i was in the drive lane right side but 2 semis one passing the other were barrowing down on me i had to cut sharply to the right and off the shoulder of the highway to keep from being hit buy one of the semi's the ford company stated they would have the parts and the soft wear to fix this problem by the 2nd quarter of 2019 it is now the second half and the problem continues to get worse it now clucks when shifting up from 3 to 4 and sometimes down shifting and when taken your foot off the gas pedal for a few seconds then then push on the gas pedal again the trans will clunk again when i test drove this truck before i bought it i told them there was something wrong with the drivetrain and they told me there was nothing wrong with it that i needed to learn how to drive a six speed transmission the thing about that and they don't know me before i retired i was the floor and operations manager for the community garage of battle creek mich. i have had this truck in to them 2 different times and 2 different dealerships plus i.ve taken it in 3 other times but after making and appointment and telling them i would need a loner which the warranty covers then when i get there no loner plus i would have to pay a $100 fee on the warranty for the thing they never fixed (19v-075)

While driving to work today, and making a right hand turn, my vehicle completely shut off. that is, the engine died, the power steering died, and the brakes died while the truck came to a complete stop in the middle of the lane. let me reiterate - the truck completely died in the middle of the road and there was a complete loss of control over the vehicle. had there been another vehicle, object, or person in front of me, i would have likely collided with them (thankfully the road was empty) research has lead me to find that this is a known issue with ford and the f150 series from years 2010 to approximately 2014. fuse number 27 in the engine fuse box is undersized from the factory and melts due to the inability to handle the amperage. i found mine melted after today as well. ford has "addressed" this issue with a tsb (ford tsb-15-0137 see attached) which it charges customers for to replace the fuse and wiring for the fuse with a new, up sized fuse and wires. they do not cover this free of charge unless your truck is under warranty. as this is a glaring safety issue that numerous people have reported, i ask that the nhtsa investigate this and have ford initiate a recall on the affected vehicles, and make the repair free of charge to customers. this issue is a manufacturing flaw and one that has the ability to cause loss of life and property due to failure to control the vehicle. some forums where people have reported the same issue: http://www.fordraptorforum.com/f39/engine-cut-off-low-oil-pressure-warning-11894/index16.html http://www.fordraptorforum.com/f39/ford-raptor-fuel-pump-fuse-issue-45129/index37.html https://www.f150forum.com/f12/engine-shots-off-while-driving-402848/ http://www.f150ecoboost.net/forum/31-f150-ecoboost-problems/26113-engine-randomly-died-while-driving.html

Vehicle was in motion, pulling a trailer and the light came on and then shut down completely. turned it off then back on and it was fine for 2 blocks then did it again. it took several attempts to get it to the dealership. they informed it is electronic throttle body failure.

Bought the truck used about 6 months ago and the left rear and passenger right front door lock assembly would not work. took into the shop and the door latches on both doors had to be replaced. now the passenger rear door will not unlock or open.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle accelerated and then stalled. the wrench warning indicator illuminated during the failure. the vehicle was coasted to the side of the road. when the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, it drove normally. the vehicle was taken to rogers ford (4200 w wall st, midland, tx 79703, (432) 694-8801), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 66,000.

After using rear defrost, left side of the rear window shattered with a loud pop, sending bits of glass onto pax in the back seat. after reading online this is a known issue with this model of truck and needs to be a safety recall.

The down hill decent light and traction control sensor are intermittent which affects the blinkers, the power locks on the doors and sometimes the traction control.

Dining acceleration the truck would sputter in higher rpm then just recently i would be doing 70 mph down the highway and i would get a service light with power reduction which in turn would require me to pull over shut the truck off restart it and try again. i would get back up to speed and it would repeat. each time only getting about a mile up the road and it would repeat. took the truck into the dealer as it was still in warranty the first time and they ignored the p2112 code and replaced a totally different sensor.

My ford f150 experienced a coolant system leak similar to recalls for other ford models (https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2017/03/29/ford-issues-three-safety-recalls-and-one-safety-compliance-recal.html). the problem is so bad with ford trucks around my model year that there is a nationwide backorder of the part to fix the problem. the coolant system's "t connector" was leaking onto my wiring harness and presented a potential fire hazard much like the recall notice for similar ford vehicles. simply search "2013 ford f150 coolant leak" and the t connector problem is at the top of the search results. ford dealers and mechanic shops are aware of the design flaw, but ford motor co will not address it as a recall at this time. this needs to be remedied. the leak was occurring when the vehicle was running and in motion.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. the contact stated that the door locks on the vehicle failed and could not be unlocked. the door was able to unlock the next morning. there were no warning indicators illuminated before the failure. the dealer (kirk auto company, 235 sw frontage rd, grenada, ms 38901) was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 81,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving 35 mph, the rear defogger was activated and the rear window shattered. the vehicle was taken to donley ford lincoln of mount vernon (1455 coshocton ave, mt vernon, oh 43050, (740) 392-2222) where it was diagnosed that there was a shortage in the rear defogger. the rear window needed replacement. the contact mentioned that the defogger was built into the window. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 65,800.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle downshifted from high gear to first gear, causing the rear wheels to lock up. as a result, the contact's vehicle skidded off the road. in addition, the contact stated that the wrench warning icon illuminated. the failure recurred three times. the vehicle was taken to thomasville ford lincoln (1515 e jackson st, thomasville, ga 31792) where it was diagnosed that an electrical failure with the lead frame caused the vehicle to downshift and would need to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. the manufacturer was contacted and opened case number: cas14180308. the approximate failure mileage was 67,000. the vin was not available.

Remote started the vehicle at night, around 7:30 pm on a 23 degree temperature night in central indiana. we then got into the vehicle roughly 5 minutes later. both doors were then closed and the key was put into the ignition. once the key was in the ignition, we heard a very loud "bang" noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. we noticed the driver's side 1/3 of the power sliding rear window was shattered. we exited the vehicle to inspect the damage. nothing was present in the bed of the truck to cause us to believe something had hit it. upon further investigation online and a certified mechanics opinion, it has come to our attention that this is a "common" issue with ford f-series trucks. the rear defrost mechanism becomes too hot during remote start and causes the tempered glass to become unstable and shatter.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle inadvertently downshifted into third gear and then to first gear as the engine warning indicator illuminated. the contact stated had to depress the brake pedal and shift into neutral to control the vehicle as the vehicle was able to coast to the side of the roadway. after turning off and restarting the vehicle after a few minutes, it was able to drive normally. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to john amato ford (1015 main st, mukwonago, wi 53149, (800) 606-3085) where it was diagnosed with a faulty connector wire harness with diagnostic failure codes: al3z, 7g276, and d. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vin was not included in a recall. the approximate failure mileage was 82,500. *tt

1/26/17: it was 45 degrees this morning so i used the remote start (factory supplied on key remote) to get my truck running before leaving for work. as i walked outside (did not touch the truck), i heard a loud gunshot. thinking something had fallen on the truck i looked up and it was not parked under anything. i walked around the truck to find that the drivers side panel of the back window was spidered. again, i was not driving or parked under or around something that could have impacted my truck/window.

Truck has downshifted from drive into a lower gear. also engine rattles on startup. mechanic advised the rattle is probably a stretched timing chain. downshifting occurred on the highway at approximately 55 mph. my son has a 2011 4 wheel drive ford pickup with a v-6 engine. 45,000 miles. the timing was replaced at a cost of $1800. ford motor company will not fix problems.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failures continued. the vehicle was repaired on two different occasions. the vehicle was taken to five star ford lincoln (located at 711 e wishkah st, aberdeen, wa 98520, (360) 533-3673) where it was diagnosed that a fuse needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure continued. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 77,000. *bf the consumer stated the fuel pump was replaced for the 4th time. *tr

I entered the vehicle at about 10 pm on 12/31/17 and started driving home. it was cold so i turned on the windshield defroster and the rear window defroster. about 5 minutes into my trip i noticed a light on the dash go on then off and was not sure which one it was then it flashed again it was the rear window defroster button. the next thing we heard a very loud pop like and saw the rear window shattered. it is a power slider just the section directly behind the driver shattered. i did some research and found out there has been numerous complaints about this very same thing. next i will be going to a local dealer and making a complaint because from what i can see there has not been any recalls on this matter. what is it going to take to get a recall on this? i believe the ford motor company should absorb the cost for the replacement

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced a loss of engine power and the gauges did not function. the failure occurred without warning. the failure was corrected after a manual restart. the failure occurred on three separate occasions. woodhouse ford (3633 north 72nd street, omaha, ne) was contacted, but the failure could not be duplicated. the manufacturer was notified and did not assist. the failure mileage was approximately 44,000.

On december 7th 2017, my 2013 my 2013 f-150 started having electrical issues resulting in a dead battery that has not been corrected. error messages that arise include " battery saver on' and "audio off" indicators and after jumpstarting the vehicle will start with the key in the "on" position and in some cases such as mine, the vehicle will not shift out of 5th gear until the ignition is cycled off and then on again. this vehicle has left me stranded requiring me to find someone to jumpstart it. there are an increasing number of complaints on this year model for the exact same issue with no resolution from ford.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle lost power and shut off. the service engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and towed to the dealer (joe cooper ford, tulsa, ok, 918-346-6500) where it was diagnosed that the fuse that controlled the fuel pump burned up. a manufacturer-issued fuse relocation kit was installed to repair the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the failure mileage was approximately 56,000.

Rear windshield exploded when defroster was on (drivers-side only). temprature was around 30-35 degree's outside. truck had been remotely start and running for approximately 10 minutes before shattering.

Traveling at various speeds on highway. the orange wrench waring lights came on, speedometer went to zero, mileage indicator went out , gas dte indicator quit working, speed reduced. switched vehicle off after stopping, switched back on everything reset - vehicle ran fine until the next time, same thing reoccurred. this has happened several times. took it to dewitts automotive repair, windsor, va. dianostic report indicates wiring harness and module sensor for powertrain needs replacing. must be replaced by ford repair shop.

Engine fire. a strong smell of burning, electrical wiring order started coming from the a/c vents, i soon noticed smoke coming from under the hood. as the truck slowed to a stop and i guided to the side of the road, open my door, i could see the flames rising and growing larger. by the time i got off the phone with 911, i heard the first blast. in less than 5 mins. later a larger, louder blast happened. not long after that, the whole front end was completely melted.

Truck would turn over but not start , no fuel was making it to spark as fuse for fuel pump had melted into fuel box and damaged it. this is a faulty setup and needs to be address before someones life is taken or injured badly.

The apim or advanced protocol interface module went bad this is the computer screen. the heat would kick on high and blow on high speed and it would get so hot inside the vehicle on a hot day that we literally felt like passing out. there was no way to control the heat or air conditioning system and we had to open all the windows and sunroof just to cool down and it was still so hot. we had to keep opening the sunroof so many times it broke and was not covered under warranty. the truck only had 99,000 miles on it. buyer beware the apim unit is only covered for 5 years from warranty start date and i was never notified by ford that this was a recall service bulletin m202. the sunroof would have never went bad had the apim unit not malfunctioned because we never opened it before the unit went bad. total cost of my repair 2400 for sunroof and 1000 for apim unit replacement. this is a safety hazard because you have to drive with all windows down and it gets so hot you will feel sick.
