We have classified the 417 complaints from 2012 Ford F-150 about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
While driving on the highway i experienced severe reduced engine power during a hard acceleration for an attempted pass. upon completion of a diagnostic, i was told there was a misfire in cylinders 1-3. the technician informed us the circumstances and results were hallmark for a known condition related to moisture accumulation in the charge air cooler (cac) for turbochargers in 3.5l ecoboost engines of my model year. the vehicle had just over 54k miles on it at the time of the incident (typical mileage for the problem to manifest). the vehicle was maintenanced one week after the incident at the dealership i purchased it new from. the dealership cited the cause of the misfire as bad coil packs - 4 of them at the time of arrival. coil packs typically have a lifespan of 100-150k miles before failure. however, 4 of them went bad (3 simultaneously) in a vehicle with <55k miles on it. literature posted about others/similar situations read the same - bad coil packs, due to ingestion of water into the turbo. an issue ford was aware would happen without the deflector plate due to design flaw! no alert to the owners that it was a potential concern, bring the vehicle in for a check - no word at all! if there was a known problem with their turbo design leading to compounding premature failure, why wouldn't they let the owners know? the dealership would have had ample opportunity to inform me of the issue if that was their intention as i visit regularly. the call center rep said they don't have to tell us anything unless there is a recall. so basically they manufacture dangerous/problematic vehicles until nhtsa slaps their hand about it!? i surely hope everyone who has this issue is reporting it to nhtsa but i doubt they know it is an option and ford is profiting from having additional maintenance performed at their dealerships. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving 55 mph, the gear shifter inadvertently shifted from high to first gears. as a result, the rear driver and passenger side wheels locked. the contact then stated that the speedometer dropped without warning and the vehicle downshifted. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to cloninger ford of morgantown (1001 jamestown rd, morganton, nc 28655, (828) 584-4600) where it was diagnosed that the power train control module needed reprogramming. also, the molded leaf frame needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 16v248000 (power train). the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000. the vin was unavailable.
I was driving on the freeway. i was driving approximately 70mph / 6th gear. my truck shifted on it's own ( i could tell by the dashboard gear indicator) into 1st gear. this caused my rear tires to lock up and put my vehicle into a skid. *tr
Driving on a highway, accelerated from a traffic light and between 30 and 40mph the vehicle suddenly lost power, could not accelerate, check wrench light came on, and also the airbag warning light. pulled off the road, restarted and everything ok. saw dealer 2 days later, they said i have to replace the transmission bulk connector at a cost of $650. vehicle has approx. 75,000 miles on it. *tr
Vehicle shifts unexpectedly. no particular circumstance can be identified that cause it. it happens on the freeway in traffic, in parking lots, city streets, when the transmission is warm and when it is cold. causes people and property in truck to be thrown around. also causes a sudden reduction in speed that could potentially cause a rear end accident. has been happening for the last 100k miles. ford has tried to fix it and they can't. their is a recall 16s19 for this same exact issue on the same make, model and year but ford says my truck is not part of the recall. it's either a paperwork issue at ford as to what vehicles are effected or an underestimation of how far reaching the issue is.
Transmission shifts from 6th gear to 1st gear and other lower gears with out warning. late time was today 12-5-16. traveling at 60 mph; it shifted without warning to 2nd gear and then to 1st gear. causing vehicle to skid side ways on rain slick road. this is the 6th or seventh time this has happened. no lights are turned on. almost always i am using cruise control. this is very dangerous. can easily loose control of vehicle. vehicle has 45,000 miles and dealer maintained.
Transmission randomly downshifts causing the vehicle to lock up in the back or lose traction completely.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving various speeds, the vehicle downshifted into first gear independently and the power train warning sensor illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the speed sensor panel needed to be reprogrammed. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 12v198000 (power train). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 135,000.
Vehicle unexpectedly downshifts when at a high speed on the highway. downshift was so sudden and abrupt, it caused my back wheels to lock and actually skidded to an almost complete stop while passing a another car going 55 on a 65 mph highway. if other cars were around, it would have caused a major accident. ford has recalled vehicles like mine (recall # 16s19) from kansas city, where my vehicle was made. but has told me that my vehicle does not show up. i bought this vehicle in canada. it was export from the same plan having the problem. this sudden downshift can cause a serious accident. effect is like slamming the brakes at 65 mph. i will be taking in for repairs at my expense. but ford needs to be more safety conscious with their customers and society in general . this issue is very dangerous.
I took my f150 in for the recall regarding the transmission unexpected downshift. when i got it back, i lost power, mpg. it's harder to push the accelerator down. it went from 21/24 to 15/16on the highway. i've had it back in to our local ford dealer 3 times. they put it on the computer and found nothing wrong. they know there's a problem, but can't do anything without ford company instructions. i put over 3,500 miles on my f150 and still get crappy mileage. i want it fixed since it worked fine before i took it in for the recall. i either want it fixed or swap for a new vehicle, or i will see my attorney. i am tired of the stress. i never had any problems until i took it in for the recall. i'm afraid it's going to break down when i'm traveling or it could cause a wreck. i want something done now, not later when it's to late. our dealer, show walter ford in vernal utah caused the problem. photo showing mpg is from our trip from billings mt to casper wy. total trip mpg was 16.9 for 1340 miles11/05/2016 we've had two other trips with the same.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle downshifted into first gear and caused the vehicle to become unstable on the road. the contact stated that the rear wheels seized. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 71,000.
Driving at about 65 miles per hour hwy 134 heading east bound when the speed odometer stopped working and the truck down shifted causing a sudden decrease in speed. i was lucky no one was following close behind or this could have caused an accident. i took the truck to the ford dealer right away and have the truck at sunshine ford in north hollywood being repaired. i was told my vin # is not part of the recall. i checked and this is the same problem the trucks that were recalled have. i expect my truck to be added onto the recall. this is an unsafe defect. i wrote to ford corporation friday the 28th day of october, 2016. *tr

Vin: [xxx] recall date: apr 25, 2016 recall title: powertrain control module reprogramming nhtsa recall number: awaiting# ford recall number: 16s19 recall description: some vehicles may experience an intermittent loss of the transmission output speed sensor (oss) signal to the powertrain control module, potentially resulting in a temporary, unintended downshift into first gear. in some cases, the oss signal could recover while driving and the vehicle will resume normal function; in other cases the vehicle may need to be stopped and restarted to regain normal transmission operation. ford is aware of three reports of accidents and no injuries related to this condition on the affected vehicles. risk to safety: depending on vehicle speed at the time of the downshift, an unintended downshift into first gear may occur causing the rear tires to slide or lock up until the vehicle slows. this may result in a loss of vehicle control without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. remedy program: owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a ford or lincoln dealer to have the powertrain control module reprogrammed with updated software. there will be no charge for this service. ford is excluding reimbursement for costs because the original warranty program would provide for a free repair for this concern. ford will forward a copy of the notification letters to dealers to the agency when available. status: 12 - recall incomplete. remedy not yet available. manufacturer notes: to check for non-safety-related programs applicable to your vehicle, see http://www.ford.com/ or call your ford dealer. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Fluid loss: on 2 separate occasions i have parked my truck in my driveway at night and in the morning i awake to find puddles of fluid under truck. i have taken the truck to a ford service center and both times have been told i have no leaks. 2 days ago the puddle of reddish fluid was much bigger. once again i am told no leaks by service department. i have shown them pictures & i am told there are fluids they cannot check, ford has not provided a way to do that on this truck. i purchased an extended warranty as i can't afford a huge repair bill. other f150 owners have had similar issues and i am concerned. is ford going to wait until someone dies or are they hoping the consumer will pay for fix after warranty has expired? what are they hiding?
Hello, i have a 2012 ford pickup truck with automatic transmission, multiple times as i was driving on the road the truck would downshift and lose power, the dashboard would read that i'm driving in 5th gear but the truck was only going about 5miles per hour. i would pull over and turn vehicle off for a few minutes and restart again, sometimes it would work, i took it to a ford dealership for repairs and they informed me that a recall for the same symptoms were done to other trucks like mine, but the vin # was not coming up as being one of the infected ones, the repairs were very expensive and i kept the receipt just incase it comes up later, so far no luck according to ford.the dealership said they would reimburse me if it does , but to let someone know they did change the exact parts on the recall. well its been awhile since this took place. the truck has 135,000 miles on it and still runs good after the repair at alot less miles at the time. i can send the receipt if you need it or the dealership can help if you need more information, miller motors in burlington wi.
While driving approximately 50mph there is an apparent loss of signal to the speedometer followed by a sudden down shift from 6th to 2nd causing the truck to nearly come to a halt. happens very randomly and intermittently. almost caused an accident a couple of times. on one occasion the truck was in drive, i was pressing the accelerator and the truck would not go any where. put it in park and turned it off and back on and then it was fine.
Stumble/misfires at speed causing truck to lose speed rapidly while in traffic, has been at a ford dealer up to a month at a time for repairs and they cannot seem to fix problem. i have been in contact with ford since tuesday 3 may 2016and they assigned a case number to my truck cas-9385544-n9c1q6 crm:01199000003347. since then i have been through four different customer representatives and the truck has been at the dealer on and off for over six weeks with them saying try this it should be ok now. i almost on several occasions got rear ended on the interstate when the engine shuts down and speed drops to about 40, then i have to get across lanes to the shoulder let the truck idle for about 5 minuets. then i cannot get it to go above 50mph for about 10 miles. i bought this f150 new in 2012 it has ben doing this since i bought but not this bad, i am getting afraid to drive this truck. can you look into what can be done to get this truck repaired by ford. you ask for date and mileage the this happened, it happens every day so i cannot all that information, so i only provided the last day i drove this truck.
I was driving close to 50 mph on a street and the truck suddenly downshifted to first gear without warning. the rear wheels locked up and went into a skid. the engine revved to the redline. after several seconds the transmission shifted back up into a higher gear and resumed normal operation. it was a spontaneous problem and has not been able to be reproduced. these symptoms are consistent with a recall issued by ford for the 2011-2012 f150's with the 6r80 transmissions, but my vin was not included in the recall. my truck's build date is 8/29/2012. the transmission's lead frame connector was replaced by the local ford dealership, but the software has not been updated as prescribed in the recall.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving various speeds, the transmission began to downshift without warning. the check engine light illuminated after the failure occurred. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the power train control module needed to be updated. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v248000 (power train). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 95,000.
When accelerating from a stop or slow roll, the truck will jerk hard feeling like the it is coming from the driveshaft. there is no common cause for this issue such as going over a bump, etc. brought truck to the local ford dealership and was told it was "leaf spring slap" which it is clear under the truck that there is deep grooves on the drive shaft, yoke area. ford denies this is the issue. this happens 80% of the time that i accelerate either from a stop or slow movement.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving approximately 40 mph, the transmission downshifted into first gear and the instrument panel lights failed without warning. the contact was able to place the vehicle in neutural, turn off, and resart the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 59,200.
Rear tire lock up while traveling at differant speeds.
I have shuddering goin on somewhere in the drive shaft, transfer case and the transmission. i just got it back from ford where they told me they could not fix it. and on the way home i hit a bump on the highway and the shudder almost ran me into the car next to me. i am feeling very scared to drive it, i feel like it's gonna fall apart. i've had it into ford many times for this problem and others and to no avail, they can't fix it. i'm ready to file a lawsuit over this. please help. thanks
Truck started to skip out of gear when driving; this started happening a year ago. took to dealership in austin, tx (covert ford), did a minor transmission rebuild; however, we noted that there was a recall for ford f150 2012 transmission, but the dealership said the model was not under the recall. after numerous returns to covert due to the recurrence of the same issue , we took the truck on an extended vacation to the mountains where the truck started to lose power on inclines (the same problem as before). we had the truck towed to durango, co to the ford dealership. the durango dealership acknowledged that it needed a new leadframe, something which should have been caught by the austin dealership a long time ago. covert (the austin dealership) did install a tsb component, but the older recalled version of it, which is why the problem persisted. we have been waiting three days and 800 miles from home for the new version of the lead frame to arrive and be installed by the durango dealership. covert ford (in austin, tx) grossly mishandled this from the very beginning with their incompetence and lack of acknowledging the service bulletin, which we brought to their attention from the very beginning!!! at this point, this has cost us thousands of dollars, hours of lost work and wages, time away from home, and many headaches.

I was driving my pickup down a gravel road going about 55 mph when it suddenly downshifted to first gear and the brakes locked up. this happened in june and there is still no fix from ford motor company. i am in college now and don't trust this vehicle going down interstate. this vehicle is unsafe to drive. we took it to the ford dealership and they couldn't do anything about it. after dealing with this problem for 4 months, this is getting flat out ridiculous. these vehicles affected are dangerous and it shouldn't take this long to get fixed. we haven't even been notified by ford about the recall.
After starting the vehicle and putting it in drive, vehicle is driven a few feet on cty streets and upshifts into fifth gear from first gear, skipping other gears. vehicle then will not down shift, even after coming to a complete stop, vehicle will still remain in fifth gear. when on a hill, the vehicle has a very difficult time moving from a stopped position when it's in fifth gear. the vehicle had to be turned off and back on, as well as put in park and back in drive multiple times to try to temporarily fix the issue so the car could become mobile again. vehicle was taken to ford dealer who stated there's an issue with a sollonoid.
April 27, 2016 recall 16s19-my ford is experiencing the same problem as the april recall. my truck has (while in motion on a city street) shifted from 5th & 6th gear down to 1st gear. my truck has also stayed in 5th gear even though i was in park. i began calling ford in april to report these issues, but my vin# is not in the recall but i'm experiencing the same problems and reported it. i want ford to include my vin in the recall. obviously there are some trucks outside the specific dates the recall includes that are experiencing the same problem.a district customer representative gave me her number to call her, but after i reported the last time my truck involuntarily shifted, i did not receive a call back. i tend to believe they are aware there are more trucks experiencing the same issue and they are reluctant to take any action. help....
Tsb 11-08-18. exactly what happens to my vehicle. random. in long sweeping left turns when steering wheel is at the 11 oclock position between 40-75 mph. steering wheel will not reset itself back to center. i have to manually move wheel back to center. meaning, when coming out of the lefthand turn the wheel will stay at the 11oclock position until i move it back to center. not every time but often. if you dont pay attention 100% of the time the truck will steer itself into a wall or median only going left.
For about a month we would be driving down the road and the truck would "down" shift all by its self and stop. we would have to put the truck in park in the middle of the road or if we could safely get off to the side and restart it. and then 5/21/16 my wife was driving it down the road and lots "all power" the little " wrench symbol came put and the truck just stopped, she was able to get into a parking lot. she waited about 15 minutes like ford had told us and nothing, turn it key on and off still nothing waited another 15 minutes and it worked. so she set there and let the truck warm up and she went to pull out and as she did the truck lost all power as she pulled out and the truck died again in the middle of the highway. so we had the truck towed to the dealership (pioneer ford) and the oss sensor had broke and was causing the down shift and lose speed. so we had to pay out of pocket $450.00 plus towing fees. and this could have been worse all because of this oss causing the truck to lose speed of 65-70 miles per hour on a highway. i can't upload the invoice on my ipad, but i could fax if needed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving 70 mph, the transmission dropped into first gear and caused the vehicle to fishtail. the failure occurred on three different occasions. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was acknowledged that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v248000 (power train); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 67,000. vin tool confirms parts not available.
I have intermittent failure of the transmission while in motion. at 60 mph the truck transmission shifted from 6th gear down to 4th gear. also at a lower speed it shifted from 4th gear down to 1st gear. also when taking off from a stand still the transmission will shift from 1st gear where it starts out up to 5th gear and i have no power to pull out onto highway etc. this occurrence has come very close to getting us hit when pulling into traffic. this abrupt downshift is a very hard jerk and i have to shift into manual to override the problem. we have taken the truck to the dealer and have been told repeatedly that they can not get it to fail. this problem does not happen every time we drive. we have contacted ford motor co. and are told that there is a safety recall but they do not have the computer software to fix it yet. we are extremely concerned that this ongoing problem is going to get us killed or someone else killed. this is our only vehicle so we don't have another one we can drive until ford comes up with the software.
When vehicle was in motion, transmission began to shift into reverse on its own. i took it to my ford dealer and was told repair was not covered by the current recall.

I have had my truck to the dealer for repairs, four times! the truck will actually go into 'limp mode' causing the engine to lose all power when accelerating, it takes about a minute to correct itself, but you have to let completely off the accelerator. if you depress the accelerator before it corrects itself the vehicle shutters violently and slows even more! this is a very hairy situation especially when your in heavy traffic on rt 95! the dealership tells me "unfortunately it's sunny out and we can't duplicate the problem "! it only does this when you go on trips during rainy days or in heavy moisture.i live in maryland and have a second home in winston-salem nc. this has happened to me at least seven times whill couting between the two. all the dealership has done is put a so called water deflector on my vehicle, which did absolutely nothing! is it going to take someone getting killed before something is done about this widely known problem?
I took delivery of this truck in march of 2012. the truck has had documented ongoing serious drivability, safety and reliability issues since october of 2013. the issue of immediate concern relates to ongoing misfire, back fire, and engine stall. this condition has occurred at low speed, highway speed, and while towing. the immediate loss of power and subsequent surging effects caused by this condition renders the truck hazardous to me, my family, and other motorists. this issue has been repeatedly reported to and serviced by ford. i have also personally filed complaints and concern with ford motor company. see ford customer service case number 8603638. the misfire, back fire, and engine stall is the current ongoing issue but you will also see in the service history this vehicle has also experienced traction control, drive shaft, steering system, and sensor/electrical component failures dating back to may of 2012. it is my understanding ford motor company is aware of this issue with the eco boost engine and drivetrain in my truck. this known issue was responded to by tech service bulletin 13-2-14. however, the mitigation measures of that bulletin and other subsequent service attempted to repair my truck have not been successful. further, the service bulletin does not take into account the significant safety issue of a truck traveling public roads and experiencing sudden loss of engine power. finally, i want to point out that the ignition/engine problems my vehicle experienced has caused premature failure to other components to my drive train. this includes fouled spark plugs, damaged coils, and likely accelerated end of life to other emission controls and mechanical components to the engine due to the misfire and water entering the combustion chamber.
Automatic transmission downshifted to first gear while at highway speed. this event is like the recall described in nhtsa 16v248000. my vehicle was manufactured in august 2012, outside of 16v248000 recall target dates. repair at dealership required. recall dates were not inclusive of all defective transmissions.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that there was a burning odor under the hood of the vehicle. the contact looked and found that the cables connected to the battery were burning. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the battery caused excessive battery corrosion and ate through the positive battery cable. the vehicle's motor also failed. the motor, battery, and battery cables needed to be replaced. the manufacturer stated that the power train was covered under warranty; however, the other repairs were not. the approximate failure mileage was 82,000.
20,484 miles on truck. 10/18/15 rpm's increase but doesnt shift into next gear. 10/19/15 roadside assistance towed to dealer. dealer found no code, sent back to me. 11/17&11/22 driver seat lost memory. 11/28/15 rpm reved when brake was applied rpm's were still increasing. 12/2 brought to dealer no code on diagnosis, sent out again without troubleshooting 20,900 miles on truck. 12/8/15 rpm's reved didnt go into gear. 12/8/15 1hr after prior failure, tried to leave driveway and 2 attempts to engage drive it wouldnt move put truck in reverse then proceeded to put in drive, stuck in 1st gear for 2 blks. 12/10/15 my 5yr old granddaughter and i drove 4 blocks before truck shifted to 2nd gear. 12/11/15 truck did not seem to be running right heard a clunk upon leaving prk lot got across 4 lanes of traffic and truck failed to shift, wrench on dashed showed and went away, dash info had lines across instead of mpg and air bag light stayed on, dealer was on my way, this time code showed and was the torque converter. i ended up driving this vehicle 500 miles iwith the torque converter failing here and there until a code showed. this caused a very dangerous condition to all on the road and much unneeded stress. i am very concerned what other components have premature wear due to continuing to drive my truck in this condition. i purchased an extended vsc from dealer but unsure what it covers so ford will not offer extended warrenty, only offering oil changes. i do not want anyone to go through this same dangerous situation. please act on this before deaths start occuring. after reading up on the torque converter, the symtoms my truck experienced were exact along with the truck increasing rpm's although brake was applied. instinct is you dont continue driving a vechile that doesnt shift even due to likelyhood of other components failing and dangerous conditions in traffic.
For two years the rear slider and defrost hasn't worked. when accelerating to pass the engine light comes on and the truck starts to chatter.
F150 ups shifts hard when cold from first to second and third gear. it down shifts hard from 3ed to first gear when stopped at a stop sign. this morning while slowing down to merge into traffic it bogged down and started to die then all of a sudden it fixed itself. i bought it used and have had it for 3 weeks.
