P0720 trouble code. speedometer does not work. at highway cruising speeds, the transmission occasionally downshifts to 1st gear.
While driving and accelerating my ford f150 vehicle at approximately 35 mph, transmission dropped to first gear, which caused the vehicle to reduce speed quickly and wheels to lock up. pulled off the road. attempted to drive one more time and vehicle did the same action, while accelerating around 30-35 mph vehicle dropped to first gear and wheels locked up. pulled over, shut off vehicle, then turned it back on. placed vehicle in manual mode and was able to drive home. the next day i took f-150 to advantage ford of stuart. advantage ford said it is lead frame that needs to be replaced. researched on the internet similar problems with 2012 ford f-150's and found a recall for ford f-150's recall number 16s19. i searched my vin on ford's website and called customer care, and my vin does not show on this recall. then i came accross nhtsa number 16v248 which covers ford f150's built in dearborn michigan between february 11. 2011 and september 8, 2012. my ford f 150 was built in august of 2012 according to the manufacturer. my vin was obviously missed in this safety recall, and i would like a resolution to add my vin number to this satety recall. i talked with ford, and they started a case number cas-13394098.

While traveling at seventy miles an hour the truck downshifts to second gear . truck went sideways on the highway. grandchild hit her head on window. i reported it to ford and they said that my truck was not a recall vehicle. i have been treated so bad . it has done it many times. latest incident was yesterday. oct ninth 2018 . i have been trying to get ford to at least give me a price on the repair cost and all i get is the run around
Vehicle randomly shifts up and down. it will sometimes shift from 1st to 6th and then the vehicle does not go since it is in high gear. other times, it will shift from 6th to 3rd. this happened while driving 70 mph on expressway, it shifted to 3rd and caused the vehicle to jerk. i researched and others have had similar issues. took to ford and they said it needs a new lead relay which will cost $600.
On 9/24/17 traveling at approx. 40 mph on a straight section of a rural state road the vehicle suddenly shifted to 1st gear with no action from the driver. the rear wheels skidded until the vehicle slowed down. it was a sunny warm dry day. prior to this incident i have noticed on about 4 occasions recently that proceeding from a stop the transmission would shift from 1st gear directly to 5th which made it seem like the transmission was slipping, the vehicle would have little to no acceleration, it would need to be stopped, then would proceed normally. ford has 2 customer satisfaction safety recall programs: 16n02 and 16s19 that were created to correct the exact issue that i describe and apply to 2011 and 2012 f-150's that were built in dearborn between 2/11/11 and 9/8/12. my f-150 built in dearborn on 8/19/12 which is between the date range. both the ford dealer and ford customer service have told me that the truck is not part of the program when they search the vin #. it appears that one or more vehicles experiencing this vetted problem are still out there with unsafe defective components. at this time ford is unwilling to make the repairs.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle lost power and the wrench icon illuminated without warning. the contact stated that the vehicle coasted as if it were in the neutral position. when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle would not accelerate. the contact coasted to a nearby gas station, turned off, and restarted the vehicle to correct the failure. the contact stated that the failure occured on three occasions since september 23, 2017. fletcher ford in pineville, missouri was made aware of the failure and stated that there were no recalls on the issue. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 60,000.
My 2012 ford f150 has about 60k miles on it. i have been having transmission problems - shifting into higher or lower gears than it should, not shifting into gear, revving high with low power, the speedometer will show 0 mph a lot of times, and at one point it downshifted into first gear while i was driving 65-70mph on the freeway. fortunately, that time nobody was behind me and i was able to safely pull to the shoulder. that only happened once. i was able to put it in park, turn it off, and turn it on again to get it going. the other issues have been happening a few times a day and i can get it to work and back but it's a little dicey when driving in traffic. i have to put it in park, turn it off and sometimes in reverse to get it going. i got a dtc p0720 a few days ago and then took it into the shop on sept 18th. jones west ford, the ford dealership in reno told me it was the lead frame and they would replace it for over $700. i started looking online to see if anybody had experience with this. apparently there was a recall for my make and model and year, with my transmission, for trucks built at the plant where my truck was built at the time my truck was built. i called ford customer service, but they and the dealership say my truck is not affected by the recall. it is however showing all the signs of an unsafe vehicle with the exact same problems that i am seeing in the recall (i guess ford now calls it a "customer satisfaction program" 16n02). they said they would have to charge me, they didn't fix my truck, said the part is back-ordered and i should come and get my truck and take the chance of driving it. i asked for a loaner vehicle and they said no. after i picked it up, driving home in heavy traffic, the hood started to rise up. after they didn't fix my truck, they forgot to latch the hood. very scary. pulled to the side of the busy freeway, latched the hood.
Driving about 70 mph the vehicle experienced a lack of acceleration, depressing the gas pedal would only accelerate very slowly; speedometer went down to zero, rpm gauge went to zero, instant mpg display went to zero, service engine light came on. pulled over in highway and requested a vehicle health report; the report indicates "restraints indicator lamp warning". after parking and turning vehicle off/on, problem goes away, however it was difficult to move from the leftmost lane to the right side of the road with limited acceleration. this is the third time i have experienced this in the last two weeks, a report was also submitted for that case.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that while stopped a light, the vehicle's rear end made an abnormal noise and jumped off the road. the contact stated that once the vehicle landed they attempted to move the vehicle however, when depressing the acceleration pedal, the vehicle made a grinding noise and failed to accelerate forward. after observing the vehicle, the contact found that the transmission gears in the rear blew out. the vehicle was towed to the residence. the contact contacted the all star ford dealer located at 300 century ct, pittsburg, ca 94565; 925-752-7800 who informed the contact that they would have to have the vehicle towed into the dealer to receive a diagnosis. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 99,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving approximately 40 mph, the transmission went from one gear to another without warning. the dealer was contacted (autonation ford, north canton, oh, 330-497-9100) and informed the contact that there was no recall. the failure was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the failure mileage was approximately 103,000.
While driving on the highway at 55 mph truck speedometer was dropping to zero and back to 55 and then rear tires started skidding and i looked at electronic gear selection and it was in first gear, also there was picture of a wrench on the the dash screen then it went out and gauges were dashes no speedometer and air bag lights and a check engine light on. pulled over along the highway and shut off for a little while then started engine and went to pull back on highway and it wouldn't go, so l looked at the dash and it was in 5th gear , so i shut it off again and restarted it and it was trying to pull out in 3rd gear so i got on the highway and went slow and the speedometer was going up and down all the time. so i got off on an exit and shut it off again and finally it worked so i made it home
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle independently shifted from first gear and failed to change gears appropriately. the contact had to turn off and restart the vehicle in order for it to return to normal. the failure recurred the following day. the dealer (athens ford, 4260 atlanta hwy, athens, ga 30606, (706) 521-0778) diagnosed that the leaf frame wiring harness in the transmission needed to be replaced. the dealer and the manufacturer made no mention of the service campaign (15n05 electric vacuum pump extended coverage), so the contact was uncertain if it was related. in addition, the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was excluded from a recall campaign. the failure mileage was not available.
The truck will abruptly downshift into first gear causing the rear wheels to slide while driving at highway speed. this is a very dangerous thing, nhtsa campaign number 16v248000. we did take it into the dealer to have the power train control module reprogrammed to address the issue (ford recall 16s19). this did not resolve the problem but the dealer advised that they were not authorized to do anything further to address the problem. we were also told by the dealer, and research had indicated, that the truck needs to have the molded lead frame replaced. we were advised by the dealer that this part is in short supply, because of heavy demand, and the waiting list is over 3 months to get one. ford motors did agree to replace the lead frame if you came in before december 31st 2016 or, had 150,000 miles or less, or less than ten years from warranty date (ford 16n02). i did call ford motor company and they said they had met their obligation and would do nothing more to address this serious safety issue. this issue did not occur with our vehicle until after fords recall repair conditions (above) had expired (16n02 molded leadframe extended coverage ). this is a serious safety issue that should be addressed without an expiration date, miles, or time limit. the fact that ford has acknowledged that this is a problem and a safety concern, they should stand behind their customers and fix it. the date being ask for below is to the best of my memory.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving different speeds, the vehicle stalled and the transmission warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was able to be restarted, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (hall ford in elizabeth city, nc, 877-475-0723) where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the contact was referred to nhtsa. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
First national recall (16s19). software recall repair to prevent transmission from shifting down into 1st while driving. completed feb 2017. august 2017 while merging onto highway, transmission abruptly shifted into first and locked up my rear wheels. i was never informed by ford that there was an additional fix/recall. recall (16n02) lead frame replaced august 2017. repair seems to have addressed shifting problem, but i now transmission damage that ford states is unrelated.
Truck shifts from 5th gear down to 1st and also shifts from 1st gear up to fifth gear
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle downshifted into first gear and jerked forward. the contact stated that the vehicle's speed decreased rapidly. an independent mechanic was made aware of the failure and the following diagnostic codes were displayed: p0722, p0731, p1500 and p1548. in addition, the dealer cited nhtsa campaign numbers: 12v190000 (power train, exterior lighting) and 16v24800 (power train) as possible causes of the failure. the manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 126,000.
In motion, transmission slams into lower gear while slowing down.
I have taken my truck in to the dealership for 2 years now on multiple occasions with a loud screeching noise coming from the transmission. the dealership replaced many parts outside of the transmission per the recommendation of the warranty company. the truck is now not in safe driving conditions. it is now dropping down in first gear at 65 mph. i see where there was a recall on 2011-2013 select vehicles with the same problem. the shifting down to first happens all the time now and has put me in a difficult situation on the highway with nearly crashing. when it downshifts at speeds between 45-65 it will not continue to drive safely, it will only go at low speed in a jerking motion. the service director at capital ford in charlotte, nc dealership where i bought it from said that they have made many attempts to fix it but have not yet pin pointed the problem. the truck is now out of warranty and is stating that i will have to pay for a new transmission. please advise.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. when the contact slowed the vehicle down to drive over drainage dips in the road, the transmission independently shifted into first gear when the accelerator pedal was depressed. this event caused a jarring jolting effect while driving. western slope auto (2264 us-50, grand junction, co 81505, (970) 243-0843) stated that there was no recall on the vehicle and could not assist. the manufacturer echoed the dealer and referred the contact to nhtsa to file a complaint. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 100,000.
Power train:automatic transmission recall: this problem has occurred while the vehicle is in motion traveling over 45 mph and at 70 mph. there is a sudden and quick, what seems to be a downshift or very loud pop from the transmission/rear axle and feels like the backend has run over a large object like a telephone pole. sudden and hard jerk of the vehicle from the rear end while driving over 45 mph. this issue has occurred sporadically over the last 5 years, at least 4 different times.
Vehicle is experiencing the issues described in ford's april 27th, 2016 recall announcement of bad transmission software and/or hardware. my vehicle is said to be outside of the dates that was affected. while driving the vehicle at speeds of around 25 mph (multiple times) the speedometer becomes erratic and drops to zero mph. throttle is held steady. the transmission bounces between gears and then goes into first gear at which point the vehicle slows abruptly and the rear tires squeal. i have not driven the vehicle at higher speeds to see if the issue occurs there as well. video of this happening on my 2012 f-150 available here: https://youtu.be/p5zxvesusuc
On 5/9/17 i was driving my 2012 f-150 pickup on the highway at 60 mph when all of a sudden it came to an abrupt slow down and shifted into 1st gear. it was enough to cause a screeching of the tires and temporary loss of control. i eventually slowed down and came to a complete stop. since i have the 5 year/100.000 drive-train warranty. i immediately called the dealer i bought the truck new from to have it towed to the shop. after they took a looked at the truck they called back and reported that they could not find anything wrong with it and suggested a pcm/transmission reprogram. i agreed to this service work. thinking this incident was very strange i did an internet search of recalls for ford trucks. my search found a recall for the exact symptoms i experienced. the dealer called and reported my truck was ready for pickup. when i went to get my truck i questioned the service guy about the recall. he indicated that this was an issue with 2011-2012 ford trucks but mine did not meet the build date guidelines to qualify for the recall. they would not cover the $58.95 charge for the re-programming. this made me very upset. this incident could have had a very different end result if i would have hit another vehicle, went in the ditch, or worse yet been pulling my horse trailer. please do something before someone dies in an accident.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle independently shifted into another gear, which caused the vehicle to stall on the highway. all the instrument panel warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 9,000.
A bushing responsible for holding the shifter cable in the transmission detached. the transmission ends up in a different gear than what the driver sees on the shift console. for example, you might put the car in park, and the dashboard would show park, but the car would still be in gear. 2012 ford f150 --> same exact issue repaired on 4/24/2017. there is a recall from ford today and it does not include the f150. yet experienced same exact issue and repair on 2012 f150 over 1 year ago. f150 at the time only 57,500 miles and 4.5years old.
I was traveling at a speed of 60mph, when my transmission downshifted from 6-1, locking up the rear tires. this cause the semi pulling a load to have to swerve to avoid me.. another instance, i was pulling out in a busy intersection and the transmission went into 5th gear, causing the vehicle to nearly stall, resulting in 3 vehicles slamming on brakes to avoid me. ford is denying me coverage of a recall issued due to me 2012 f150 being outside of the specified production dates with a production date of 7/12. https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/2011-12-ford-f-150-among-vehicles-recalled-for-transmission-defect.html i am at ford currently and they have diagnosed it with p0722- speed output sensor lead failure.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, automatically the 6th gear shifted to the 1st gear without warning. the contact pulled over to the side of the road, changed the gear to park and restarted the engine, the vehicle the operated as normal. the failure recurred several other times. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vin was not part of a recall. the approximate failure mileage was 38,623. ...updated 10/23/17 *bf updated 12/11/2017*js
When i start the truck the engine light is on, while driving the truck stalls and looses power and the tool sign comes on in read out window. i have to pull over and put the truck in park and restart it. this happens every 100 yards or so. i under stand this is an ongoing problem with the 2012 f150 ford trucks. i can't understand why the want have a recall. i understand they need to add a deflector shield under the motor. it's very dangerous when a vehicle looses power while driving down the highway.
tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed in fourth gear, the vehicle failed to shift into fifth gear and failed to accelerate without warning. the contact also stated that the vehicle independently shifted into second gear. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but the failure was unable to be determined. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 63,000.
My truck is a 2012 platinum model with the 3.5l ecoboost motor. motor failed at 60k miles due to head gasket leak and had to be replaced. less than a month later i am now dealing with a "service advancetrak" message and steering wheel is locking up completely while trying to make right hand turns. vehicle is very frightening to drive and has pulled me into oncoming traffic 2 times. dealer is saying the truck needs a new steering rack and $2k to fix.
Transmission downshifted into first gear while i was driving approximately 60 mph, causing rear wheels to lock up. truck started to spin around before stopping abruptly in the roadway. ford diagnosed as bad part in transmission that was recalled in some vehicles, but not mine. wtf?
2012 ford f-150. multiple occurrences...vehicle in motion and the vehicle downshifts to 1 gear on its on. it sticks for 10-20 seconds before it releases and then you can accelerate again.
I was driving down highway on 3/19/17 and the truck starting jerking then the tach and the speedometer started bouncing then it started to shift from 6th to 2nd then to 5th back to 2nd and so on. pulled over turned it off to see if the computer would reset then drove down the rode and around 50mph it throw itself into park, then it shifted back into gear and started the same thing over. took to dealer they so called "fixed it" saying it was low voltage problem caused by alternator and bad battery got truck back 3/14/17, but this morning 3/15/17 it messed up see pic was going 30mph notice the speedometer and it downshifted hard once from 6th to 4th. now they are telling me its something to o with the transmission computer so i spent over $900 for nothing and have to spend another $1200+ for something they not sure what it is..... the main issue is what if i was on the interstate and it went into park.
While driving under normal conditions transmission will suddenly and randomly lock in 3rd or 5th gear and will not down or up shift. difficult to get moving from a complete stop from 5th gear. speedo does not work when this event occurs sometimes able to stop, place transmission in park and restart to reset the system for a short period. this does not always work though. wrench icon illuminates on the info center, speedo and trip meters show blank lines as well. i have pics and a video clip but unable to share at the moment.
I am unsure if it is a down shift or what, but my truck shakes and is very scary. i have experienced sudden power lose and a failure to accelerate.
My transmission intermittently shifts from high gears to low gears and vise versa. this occurs both when accelerating and when in high speeds. it appears to be a lead frame issue according to the dealership in el centro, ca. it is quite dangerous and scary when my child is in the car. i found 16n02 extended warranty and recall #16s19, but they do not cover my vehicle. they should!
Transmission lead frame. i would be traveling down the road and all of a sudden my truck would downshift to first gear and then i would have to cut the truck off to reset it to go again. sometimes that would remedy the problem but sometimes i would just go a few miles and it would start acting up again.
The ses, service engine soon, light came on. i noticed my truck lacking power and taking longer to shift gears when accelerating. it become less of a smooth shift and more jerky. when traveling on the highway at ~70 mph, the engine would not hold 6th gear. it would drop to 5th and 4th gear, until i gave it more gas. it would reach 3500 rpm's at times before shifting which was not normal. i also noticed starting in the fall of 2016 a short loud abnormal noise at cold start. after researching these issues, this led me to tsb 14-0194, code p0016, dealing with the 3.5l ecoboost engine. i took my truck to my local dealer and this was the issue. i have been the only owner of less than 5 years and was at 75,500 miles, out of the 60,000 mile warranty. i just had the repair done, costing me $3600. the repair included parts listed in tsb 14-0194 as well as timing belts, additional gaskets, seals, guides, tensioner, cam, sprocket, gear crankshaft, among others. i question how this known issue of timing chain stretch with the tsb is not a recall. this problem can cause an accident when accelerating on to a freeway. it can also cause an accident by suddenly downshifting while driving. i am glad my truck is fixed, however did not like the price tag. i fear that this known issue will lead to a deathly accident and it is unfortunate that a recall has not been issued yet. i hope this post helps make a change, saving consumers a costly repair and even someones life from a future accident.
Transmission down shifted to 1st gear and would not shift the gears right. while on i10 interstate!
Transmission downshifts down to 1st gear locking rear wheels and causing vehicle to go into a skid and loss of control. vehicle was traveling 70 mph on interstate when this happened and was captured on video as to how the gauges responded.
