Problems with 2011 Ford F-150 ENGINE

On average, the 2011 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 53 463 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2011 Ford F-150

When accelerating and approaching freeway speed, engine stumbled, preventing acceleration. i let off the accelerator and problem didn't occur again. i reported this to the dealer, but they stated that since the vehicle did not register a code there was nothing they could do. i have since had this happen again on july 17 & 18, 2015, but this time the engine light did come on, so i'm assuming it did register a code. on july 17, it was a clear dry day, the following day it happened again, but it was raining all day. once on the freeway, whenever i stepped on the accelerator, even when at freeway speed, the engine would stumble and barely accelerate. i've contacted the dealer and scheduled an inspection for july 29, 2015. the vehicle currently has 47000 miles. i've talked to ford customer service and i am being told this is not a warranty repair, but i am seeing a number of service bulletins being issued describing this exact problem. i believe this is a defect in design and should be covered under the manufacturers warranty.

2011 f150, 3.5l ecoboost motor, vehicle shudders and loses power during acceleration. dangerous to try and pass vehicles or even change lanes to pull over as there is power loss from engine. taken to dealer and they performed ford tsb 13-08-01. this did not fix the problem. the engine misfire continued, after returning to dealer the vehicle showed code related to same tsb after it had been applied. dealer cleared code. i have since replaced spark plugs and so far has not recurred. i have seen quite a few reports of this same issues on many ford f150 forums. i would say ford really needs to look into this problem. *tr

I went to pass another vehicle and the engine bogged with all loss of power. it was the second time this happened. the check engine light came on and engine shuddered and would not regain power until i stopped the truck and shut it off then re-started it. the first time this happened the check engine light went off and when i took it in to the dealer they could not find any issues when the diagnostics were run. the second time it happened, the check engine light came on and stayed on. truck is currently at the dealer and i am waiting to hear their findings. *tr

the engine will start to miss badly and than go dead when passing this is dangerous.. there was an investigation by you in may 2013 but you stopped it in 14 because ford said they had a fix for the problem.. the problem is not fixed and this is dangerous. my truck has been to ford 4 times now and they keep changing a coil or spark plug they say. the first time they put some kind of deflector on the charge air cooler. my truck will be out of warranty in 1200 miles and i don't want to get a problem. i joined a class action lawsuit with grant &eisenhoff. i understand that there are 500,000 ford truck f150 v6 eco boost from 2011,12 and 13 engines affected. why would you drop an investigation just because ford said they have the problem fixed.. this problem is or may already have caused fatal accidents.. i am forwarding this letter to ford and the attorneys, thank you . any information and help will be appreciated. *tr

I experienced lack of acceleration, sputtering, shaking from the vehicle while trying to pass on a 2 lane rural highway. this is second event of this nature and the first since having ford make certain repairs to engine to correct this issue. i have the v-6 eco boost engine. i am unhappy that this engine encounters this problem and it could result in a wreck with loss of life. this should be taken seriously! *tr

I was merging into traffic after picking up my daughter from daycare. i pressed down on the accelerator firmly to gain speed to get into traffic. my truck stalled with a pinging noise coming from the engine and an uncharacteristic black smoke pouring out of the exhaust pipe. oncoming traffic had to brake to avoid hitting my truck on my daughters side. the truck recovered but only gradually picked up speed with very little power. it was a low constant acceleration. this is the 4th time this has happened with my truck but this time it endangered my daughter so i feel that i need to speak out. this needs to be addressed before my 1.5 year old daughter or someone else gets hurt due to faulty equipment. *tr

While traveling down the road and the need to accelerate to pass a much slower vehicle my truck lost all power and began shuddering very bad. with oncoming traffic approaching quickly i had to step on the brakes rather hard and quick to avoid a accident. what would have possibly happened if i was towing a legal but heavy load? ford has a known problem with the coils on the ecoboost and this truly needs to be addressed. this is a extremely serious traffic safety when you loose all power and the severity of the shudder that also occurs. *tr

The truck is new to me and will miss in cases of acceleration on the highway or getting on the highway. if it were a smaller vehicle, i know i would have been run over today when trying to enter the highway already at about 60-65 mph and the engine sputtered and felt like it quit and i had to run on to the side of the road to not get hit. it has been sputtering/missing alot but never to that extreme. i hear there is an intercooler problem with the 2011 econoboost engine after asking around. supposedly, their is moisture building up in the intercooler and is horribly damaging to the engine.. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving 65 mph, the engine stalled. the check engine light illuminated when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the spark plugs failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred numerous times. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 49,502.

I accelerated hard on a highway entrance ramp and the engine started to stutter to the point i thought it might stall out. i let off the gas and accelerated again more slowly with no problem. thinking it was a one off i accelerated hard again and again the car stuttered. i went easy for a couple days and then again accelerated hard a few days later with the same result. i got online and realized i wasn't the only one having issues with this engine. on 4/18/14 i took my truck to the dealership(landers ford, collierville, tn) and reported the problem. they were familiar with it and said there was a fix. this fix included installing a moisture deflector and reprogramming the computer. it was performed and i left the dealership. yesterday, 4/23/14, it happened again. i am planning on going back to the dealership tomorrow. *tr

While trying to pass a vehicle on the highway my truck started to sputter and loose power, the check engine light came on for a few seconds and went off. this problem is happening every day now under all conditions. there are numerous complaints on this problem and no real resolutions. *tr

Engine stumbles or misfires at highway speeds, which lead to a loss of power when accelerating. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f150. the contact stated that while attempting to accelerate, the check engine warning light illuminated as the engine became unresponsive. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that a wire connected to a spark plug was faulty. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 72,000.

I was driving my ford f150 ecoboost at highway speeds for about 1 hour, a light rain started with humid conditions. while traveling around 60 mph i attempted to pass another car but my truck would not accelerate. it began to shake and shudder when i tired to increase speed which almost resulted in a collision because i was unable to accelerate while passing. my truck has now returned to normal function but i have become aware that the issue i had has happened to several others. this is very dangerous because your truck is running just fine and all of sudden it will not accelerate. *tr

Since owning a new 2001 ford f-150 ecoboost, i have noticed several issues with the engine. loss of power when accelerating, shuttering when braking and poor fuel economy. i have taken the vehicle in for service and they have applied technical service bullitins, but the issue returns. the latest problem was a failed coil pack causing my vehicle to almost stall on the highway. ford didn't cover the part under their powertrain warranty. *tr

Having issues with ford f-150 ecoboost engine losing power during acceleration, on our 2011 model. we have advised ford on this issue, since it's a safety concern, that can lead to a crash or even injury, however ford is not doing anything about it...please help us out !!! the safety of millions of people that has purchased this model truck is in your hands. it's very dangerous to drive the truck on the highway due to the sputtering, that causes you to stahl out... this is a serious issue... me and my kids almost had an accident due to this factory defect. please have this truck re-call, or investigate on this matter. thank you. *tr

When passing on interstate truck lost power an went into a limp mode check engine light went to flashing which made the truck unsafe when other traffic was moving at a higher rate of speed. *tr

While accelerating the truck hesitates, looses power and jerks violently, the check engine light flashes several times while passing a vehicle. when the truck jerks and looses power it feels like the engine is about to explode. has almost caused several accidents because of the sudden lost of power. it appears to me that the truck is misfiring. *tr

Has a problem with the turbo intercooler getting condensation and make the truck lose power check engine light starts to flash whole truck just shakes had it to the ford dealer had to put a new cat converter on my warranty didn't cover any of it i said this is fords screwup why don't they have a recall ended costing my $800.00 not to impressed ford motors also intercooler was full of ice and water. *tr

On february 13, 2014, my ford 2011 f-150 ecoboost began to show signs of limited throttle response coupled with a drastic reduction in power output and moderate to severe engine vibration. these symptoms occurred and were most severe under heavy engine load, while traveling uphill, high outside air temperature and with the air conditioner on. general locations: mojave high desert (joshua tree, ca) and the greater palm springs, ca area. weather conditions were generally dry with low humidity. on february 15, 2014 the symptoms described above were so violent that the check engine came on (flashing) and i pulled off the road for my own safety. i shut off the engine, allowed it to rest' and then turned the engine back on. the symptoms did not disappear completely, but they were reduced and the check engine light was no longer illuminated. on february 20, 2014 i brought my truck to yucca valley ford to have the problem diagnosed. mileage at the time of the service was 68,382 miles. a diagnosis was performed and it was determined that the engine was misfiring on the number 1 cylinder due to worn spark plugs. all 6 spark plugs were replaced and the symptoms disappeared. the truck ran fine until approximately june, 2014. the symptoms slowly began to reoccur and by early august, had fully returned. on august 8, 2014, while traveling at freeway speeds, up a steep grade, with external air temperatures in the low 100 degrees, low humidity, and the air conditioner on, the truck nearly lost all power, began to misfire and vibrate violently, and the check engine light began to flash intermittently. upon reaching the top of the grade and the load on the engine reduced, the symptoms were reduced. the truck was again brought to the yucca yalley ford service center on saturday august 9, 2014 where it is currently awaiting diagnosis. *tr

I was traveling on the interstate where i live and was trying to get up to speed to merge with traffic and when i accelerated my truck lost power and began to sputter and shake, and would not get up to speed, and the check engine light came on, when i took to the local dealer where i purchased it i was told number 2cylinder and number 4 cylinder was mis firing, that i needed new coil packs so i had them replaced and i am still having the same problem. *tr

I should note that my truck has the 3.5l ecoboost engine. this occurred on a very cold morning (-15f) while attempting to pass a truck on a 2 lane highway, going up hill. i had been driving approximately 1 hour when this happened. as i pulled into the left lane and accelerated hard, the truck began to shutter and misfire, losing almost all power. the check engine light flashed 3 or 4 times then came on solid. i was able to drop back into the right lane behind the truck and avoid an oncoming vehicle. i limped the truck to an area where i could get off the road. after turning the truck off and restarting the engine, it ran better but not at what would be considered full power. i got to my destination about 20 minutes later, left the truck sit for about 2 hours and headed back towards home. the engine seemed to run normally at cruising speed. since that occurance, i have noticed a drop in gas mileage and intermittent misfires or shuttering of the engine when accelerating hard. i believe this has the potential to create a significant safety hazard upon acceleration to pass or to merge into traffic. this truck basically died and lost all power. this is clearly not an isolated issue, as i have read numerous complaints on various ford truck forum websites. *tr

While trying to merge onto the highway while under medium to heavy throttle my 2011 f-150 ecoboost lost all power while shuddering to the point it i had to abruptly get out of traffic and pull off the side of the road. as this was happening the check engine light started to flash and continued for a few minutes. after sitting for a few minutes the truck behaved almost normal as long as engine rpm was kept under 2500 above that it continued to miss and have a loss of power. by the time i got it home the cel was(is) on continuously. this all happened during rush hour on a very busy socal highway and could have been catastrophic. *tr

The vehicle lost power after accelerating to higher speed when entering the highway. this has happened multiple times when passing or entering highway at higher speeds. *tr

Vehicle lost acceleration when trying to pass. engine light came on and engine started to shake. i had to turn vehicle off and restart. this now occurs anytime i attempt to accelerate... *tr

Under acceleration between 60-70 mph, trucks starts shuttering and decelerating. the check engine light starts blinking and will blink for about a minute before staying on. i was nearly rear ended by a semi entering the highway today as i was trying to accelerate up to highway speed and at approximately 65 mph, the truck started decelerating and shuttering down to 35 mph before i could get enough power to maintain that speed and get off to the side of the highway. *tr

I was on the enter state two lane thank god. it was raining and i started to accelerate to get around a big truck and my truck started to shudder and lost power all power. my truck has the 3.5 liter ecoboost engine. this is the third time this has happened to me. *tr

I was driving in highway traffic in the right hand lane at about 70-75 miles per hour. the weather was clear and the temperature was approximately 50 degrees. i encounter a slow moving vehicle and moved into the left hand lane and tried to promptly accelerate to pass a slower vehicle. when i attempted to accelerate the vehicle began to shake violently and go into a very rapid deceleration. the violent vibration of the entire vehicle and rapid deceleration made control a challenge. i moved to the right hand lane reduced speed to 50 mph and continued on to a ford dealership to have the vehicle evaluated. the dealership found that 3 coils failed which caused the vehicle to vibrate and decelerate rapidly. i had the vehicle repaired. *tr

I experienced lack of acceleration, sputtering, and shaking when trying to accelerate onto the interstate from a merge ramp. this event nearly caused a serious accident. my expectation was for vehicle to perform at normal standards and get me safely onto the highway. it failed to do so! *tr

While driving at 55mph attempted to pass a vehicle on a two lane highway. accelerated hard to pass and heard a loud metal on metal sound and lost power briefly. i was unable to replicate the initial incident, but now the truck randomly misfires and shutters under hard acceleration. sometimes the check engine light will illuminate other times it does not. dealer has been able to replicate the misfire but claims they can do nothing more. this is a safety issue because when power is needed most it is unreliable. i have escalated the matter to the corporate level at ford but have not heard anything back yet. *tr

When i tried to accelerate the truck started to buck violently and lacked power. after releasing the gas pedal and coasting a bit i was able to slowly regain speed. it was raining at the time and had been raining most of the day on 12/29/14. we have not had a recurrence but have not had any rainy days either. *tr

I approaching an intersection and let off the gas, and started to slowdown several hundred yards before coming to intersection. the f-150 suddenly began to accelerate without my foot on the gas and my foot apply as hard as i could to the brake. the truck was accelerating on own. abs kicked in and pulsed. but again truck was accelerating without my foot on the gas i complete made sure foot was removed and both feet on brakes. attempted to pump and immediately after relating from brake as pumping to try and stop as hard stop didn't work it was like it was building up and shoot out like a bullet and hit car in front me. once hit then quit accelerating. the front lifted up and full accelerating but feet were both on brakes. lucky no one was hurt. small damage to both vehicle because was as low speed intersection. if there wasn't a vehicle in front me. i would shot into intersection where only who knows what could have occurred to myself and others. this was a life threatening situation, that could have gone really bad.. end result could have been fatal. this needs to be investigated by ford and no one else should be injured or lives taken from an issue that needs immediate attention and resolution to the vehicle owners that are scared to drive there vehicle because of this occurrence. ford needs to make this right and make sure all vehicles this is reported on are safe or taken out of commission to make our roads safe for others and drives. This is a 2011 ford f150 with ecoboost engine. 3.5 liter v6 dual turbo. i purchased the truck 12-7-13 and it failed on 12-27-13 having problems accelerating. it has no power and the turbos do not work at random. the loss of power all the time is a serious safety concern. luckily i did not crash or cause a crash because of the issue. but the truck has been in for service since 1-30-14 , has been out of commission for over 30 business days and no dealership can fix it. the truck is under multiple warranties, but the issue of the turbos failing at random / ingesting moisture from the inter cooler is still there. 3/31/14 the truck is still at a dealership. *tr

Coasting at low speed around 7mph i attempted to accelerate, instantly as i put my foot on the gas pedal, now not even making it to 10mph, the 3.5l ecoboost engine made an incredibly loud and hard bang and continued to grow louder and shake more violently. i came to a stop on the side of the road i shut down the truck to find oil spilling from the passenger side of the block. i had the truck towed to my local dealership and they found that two connecting rods had broke and destroyed the block. they is no concern from anyone at ford about how this could have happened. *tr

The engine stalled (severer loss of power) as i tried to overtake/pass another vehicle. this has happened numeous times & typically occurs during humid/raining weather. i have taken the truck to the dealership several times but they have yet to resolve the issue. it is my understanding that ford is very aware of the problem and has issued several technical service bulletins but, the problem still exist. ford should be held responsible for this safety issue & forced to recall and repair these trucks before someone is seriously injured or killed.

My truck has shuddering problems during acceleration to pass. the weather was rainy and very wet. this is not the first time i have experienced the problem. while visiting louisiana in the summer of 2012 i experienced the same issue and while in san antonio, i had the catalytic converter replaced. *tr

Vehicle once when first bought shut down during rain conditions when trying to excel. it was like you ran into a wall. ford then said it was a wiring harness problem. it continued missing at times over the last two years. the same thing happened again in december while trying to pass a vehicle and it was again during rain conditions and just shut down in the road. we took it into the dealership and they said it was tsb 13 8 1 and made repairs. vehicle now does not run right and gas mileage has dropped by at lest 2.5 mpg. noticeable power loss. vehicle is the ford 3.5 echo boost. this is a big problem for consumers who want a truck and expect power with good mpg but should not be afraid to drive or get a supposed fix that's not what you have purchased. these situations will result into some very bad accidents. i cant imagine pulling something and this happens. bottom line consumers deserve safe reliable vehicles. we love fords and i hate i am having to complain but this is a real big problem. please investigate. thanks!!!! *tr

My family and i were on our way to disney world in orlando, florida when my 2011 ford 3.5 liter ecoboost f150 truck completely shut down on the interstate 10 highway in the middle of nowhere, probably 60 miles to the east of tallahassee florida. at first i thought that we were not going to make it, as the truck completely died out. i pulled off to the side and finally got the vehicle started. we had been steady state cruising with the cruise set at 70 for atleast 2-2.5 hours. after doing some reading i see that it was probably condensation in the intercooler that entered the intake tract when i had accelerated to go around a big truck that was barely making it up a hill on interstate 10. this was a real bad experience, this has happened atleast 2 times since then. luckily i have not had a wreck or crashed, but as i keep reading up, i see many people complaining about the ecoboost f150. now, i have a truck in the shop with a blown motor, and i can only imagine that the water getting into the motor and the motor trying to compress that water was what caused my engine failure. i metal from the internal rotating assembly shoot through the side of my engine block last week. i believe that happened due to the water and the water bending the connecting rods. please help. *tr

While driving my f150, v6 ecoboost engine, down the interstate, when i try to accelerate, the truck to pass vehicles and or move out of the way of on coming traffic, the engine gives me nothing and shutters, feels like it is missing. i originally started to feel this in 2013, took it to the dealership, cause i thought it could be a transmission issue, and the service rep only asked if a light came on and if none has come on, probably won't show anything. i am outside of my warranty now and the truck is shuttering very badly when i try to accelerate anywhere, besides my gas mileage has dropped significantly, which now can become a epa issue. i have read about a lot of issues concerning this year ford with same engine with no outcomes. i have been told, once again that if i don't have a check engine light, then it probably wont show a code. i don't know where else to turn but to at least have a complaint filed where there is an issue with the 2011 ford f150 v-6 ecoboost engine. *tr

2011 ford f150 equipped with 3.5l turbo charged engine traveling at 65 mph began misfiring and suddenly experienced a near total loss of power, causing the vehicle to slow to 25 mph quickly. the vehicle was traveling on a two lane highway with no shoulder and no place to pull off the road. this incident did not pose an immediate threat to car or driver, but under other conditions such as overtaking (passing) slower traffic, the sudden and near total loss of power could be disastrous. after quick research and consultation with the ford service center where i purchased the truck, i have learned the vehicle entered into "limp" mode to protect itself from mechanical damage. i have also found that this problem has long been acknowledged by ford motor company and has been the subject of a few technical service bulletins. also to the best of my knowledge, ford, through this series of technical service bulletin's has failed to provide a permanent solution to this problem. i am filing this complaint in hopes that the nhtsa in cooperation with ford motor company can provide a quick and permanent solution to this problem before someone is seriously injured or worse due to an engineering flaw on a motor vehicle. *tr

I was driving 70 mph up a hill when my truck started hesitating and my speed started to rapidly drop. i was in the fast lane and was forced to make my way to the right shoulder under a major power loss. the problem has since happened multiple time when i accelerate rapidly or under a load. *tr

Accelerating onto the highway, experienced loss of power while check engine light was flashing. cars were swerving around me due to my speed being slower than the flow of traffic. i put hazards on and pulled over. this is not safe for me or drivers around me. dealer said it was an engine misfire and replaced the spark plug and coil. since this incident it has happened multiple times. the dealer replaced another spark plug and coil. i took it in the last time and they flashed my computer and sent me on my way. the problem is still not fixed on my truck. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving approximately 80 mph, the vehicle became hesitant upon acceleration. the vehicle also surged and lunged without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 32,000.

Traveling freeway speed, inside lane, sudden and complete loss of engine power, orange check engine (wrench) appears on display. got to roadside, appeared to go into limp mode. truck moved at own (slow) speed, i had zero throttle control. exited freeway, shut down and restarted, issue gone. road conditions were wet, sleet, de-icer on roadway. with traffic all around, on slick roads, this was some scary stuff right there! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, there was a loss of power in the engine during acceleration. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the inner cooler needed a protective shield to reduce the inner flow. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 42,000.

While in wet conditions truck will stall, loose power, and shutter. while driving up a hill on busy interstate the truck stalled. had to take foot off accelerator to get the truck to go. we were almost rear ended because of this. this has happened many times! *tr

I own a 2011 ford f-150 ecoboost and have had issues that ford wishes to ignore and which i consider a serious safety hazard. approx. oct 16, 2013, while driving on interstate during rainy weather, i accelerated to pass, on the left, a tt/st that was in the right lane. as i started to pass, at approx. 3500 rpm, the engine stalled and the check engine light flashed. i was nearly rear ended by the vehicle that was behind me, due to the stall and sudden deceleration. i brought the vehicle to the ford dealer on several occasions and to this date the same thing occurs , only this time the check engine light stays on. ford's fix is to replace the coil and all six spark plugs at a cost of $400, stating the issue is a maintenance issue not covered under warranty (vehicle still under warranty). ford refuses to recognize the danger this problem creates for the occupants and would rather use a band-aid approach, rather than fix the problems , which appears to be moisture dumped into the engine from the cold-air-charge(intercooler) for the turbos. i have done my homework and have found this to be a common issue and in most cases, ford replaces the ignition coil and spark plugs , only to have the same thing happen again. again , ford is putting the occupants of these vehicles at risk caused by the sudden deceleration and refuses to do the right thing and repair the problem. *tr

Engine stall-shuts down when it goes into passing gear. when you attempt to pass or enter onto a highway you accelerate and the engine shuts down

2011 f-150 with 3.5 liter ecoboost engine. truck had been driven approximately 20 miles in the rain. stopped at a traffic light and then proceeded to turn left. accelerated up a hill on a 2 line highway and truck began to shake violently and lost all power in a moving lane of traffic. a check engine light came on. pulled to the side of road and after a minute truck cleared up and drove normal. currently the truck surges under moderate acceleration and in 3rd gear will go into limp mode and lose all power. only occurs under moderate acceleration. *tr

At highway speeds the vehicle will not accelerate. it will backfire and sputter. this last incident on 1/22/2015 almost caused a serious or fatal accident at highway speeds with a tractor trailer. i tried to pass, when i stepped on the gas the engine backfired, the engine light came on and stopped running in the middle a traffic. a semi almost killed me and my passenger. i was able to get to the side of the road, turn the key off and then re-start the engine. now the engine will barely accelerate from the start. i have an appointment on 2/4 to try to fix the problem. this has been an ongoing problem since i purchased the truck. it has now gotten increasingly worse and dangerous. *tr
