Traveling at 35 mph, heard a noise and lost all but limp home mode power. no shoulder on the road and created a dangerous lane blockage. had to be towed to dealer that does not have the needed part. told it is on national back order. we have extended warranty with rental coverage but since the part is not available they will not pay for rental waiting for the part. *tr
As i was driving, my vehicle with no warning lost power. the engine was still running, but roughly. i could press the accelerator, but it no longer caused the vehicle to accelerate. after waiting for help to arrive, i shut the vehicle off and then tried to restart. the vehicle started fine. i took it to a mechanic who thought the throttle box may be bad. i paid to have it cleaned out and for a gas additive to decrease the likelihood that it would happen again. a couple of days later, my escape stalled again in the same way and with the same results. it has happened 3 times now since may 2nd. i realize there is an investigation into the failure of the throttle body in ford escapes including the 2011 model. what is described in the throttle body failure situations is exactly what i am experiencing with my vehicle. i have been fortunate to be in curb lanes and able to maneuver safely off the road each of the times this has happened. if i happen to be in a center highway lane when it happens, i may not be fortunate enough to have an opportunity to restart my vehicle safely. *tr
Driving at freeway speed when engine lost all power. unable to accelerate. engine light and wrench light came on. was able to pull to the side of the road. restarted vehicle and proceeded back on to freeway. incident repeated 5 times in 10 miles of driving. finally located a ford dealership. computer code indicated faulty throttle body. unable to repair same day because dealership did not have the part. called 7 different dealerships within a 200 mil radius and advised no one had the part in stock. appears this is a popular problem. finally found the part the following day and dealer installed. no problems since. was forced to drive the vehicle until the part arrived as i was out of town on business when this occurred. the loss of acceleration resulted in dangerous situations. i experienced this not only at highway speed but also when trying to enter the freeway. i was almost hit twice. *tr
This vehicle has lost power unexpectedly twice in the last month while either decelerating from freeway speeds (first time) and while cruising at 65 mph (second time). in both instances the wrench lite came on and the rpm level dropped to below 900 rpm and was erratic. luckily, i was able to put on my hazard flashers and pull to the side of the road in both cases. both times, i shut the car off and it restarted resuming normal performance. this unpredictable loss of power can become a serious hazard in a freeway full of drivers. i see a growing number of escape drivers experiencing the same thing, so it appears as though a trend is happening focusing on suspect throttle body units. i am sure ford will do something about this, but wonder how bad it needs to get before they do. *tr
Vehicle was being driven between 25 and 40 mph and complete loss of drive power/speed occurred (vehicle abruptly slows to ~4 mph). immediate response to get vehicle to side of road to avoid a collision. this has occurred 4 times in the past 3 weeks (two incidents on 5/19/13). vehicle will be taken to dealer for inspection/repair week of 5/19/13. engine stays running at idle, but very rough when in drive. if placed in neutral, engine runs, but will not rev up with gas pedal. no throttle response when issue occurs. after key off and 30 second wait and restart, vehicle performs as intended. no mil lights on dashboard. this is a serious issue. *tr
Vehicle bucked violently and stalled. called ford to have it towed. before tow truck arrived, vehicle restarted and drove 2 miles to nearest ford dealer. throttle body was found to be faulty and replaced. i had made numerous complaints about poor shifting, bucking, bad mileage, etc. and dealership always told me it was not broken in yet, and nothing could be done unless it "threw a code". well it threw one this time. since the replacement, software updates have been made, a warranty extension issued, and the problems with rough shifting, bad mileage and an occasional feeling like i have been rear ended (when no one is around) have continued. i have just gotten a case number from ford. we'll see where this goes. *tr
The first of 4 incidents occurred while driving on the belt parkway in brooklyn ny. i was driving at a speed of 65 mph in the left lane on a stretch of highway with no shoulder on the left side of the road when i lost all pedal power. i wasn't able to accelerate. the engine was running and all the electronics were working properly except for not being able to accelerate. the small icon of a wrench appeared on the dash. i managed to cross three lanes of heavy traffic to the right shoulder. i put the vehicle in park and stepped on the accelerator to rev the engine, nothing happened. it seemed like there was no gas getting to the engine. i then shut down the engine and checked the owners manual for the icon of the wrench. the description of the wrench icon states that a throttle control/powertrain fault has been detected and i should contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible. upon contacting the dealer he indicated that they have been having a problem with the throttle body on my make and model and also stated that my warranty had expired and there was no recall issued for this problem. the cost was my responsibility. i proceeded to have them order me a new throttle body. the lead time would be 2-3 weeks for the new part. during that time the same problem has happened 3 more times, 2 of which were at a speed of 65 mph and 1 time starting off from a red light at a speed of less that 10 mph. after researching this problem on line i have found this to be a major issue and a recall for the throttle body should be issued and repairs made by ford at no cost to the owners. i feel that i was put in a very dangerous life threatening position. *tr
My escape had been running rough today and decided maybe i needed to take it on the interstate. while doing about 65 the "open wrench" light came on and i lost complete power. i could not accelerate or anything else for that matter. i coasted to the emergency lane. i put the car in park and restarted the escape and was able to make it home. i had read about numerous other related issues on this problem with the ford escape. i am glad i was in the right hand land and not the left lane; it could have been very dangerous. *tr
I had been driving for months with my engine surging and almost pulling and dragging almost like slowing to a stop. i do not know a lot about cars so i just continued to drive it. finally one morning in april i was on my way to work at 5am. i was turning onto the highway when while i was pressing on the gas without warning all power was lost. the engine cut off and i was able to coast over to the side of the highway. thank god it happened right before merging onto highway ramp into on coming traffic because i could have possible been severely injured in a crash or have been a crash fatality. i took the vehicle to an auto store to have battery changed. just a week later the problem started again. this time the surges were more evident after i was stopped at a light or stop sign. it felt as if the vehicle would start decelerating and loosing power while i was flooring the gas even on the highway. i became nervous about this where i took the vehicle in to be checked out at ford where i was then told that it was a problem with the electronic throttle body device. i was also informed that there might be a national recall about this problem. i am very upset because no warnings were given about this potential problem because of the possible dangers with these occurrences. my vehicle is still under manufacturer's warranty, but to have this type of concerning issue now, who knows what's to come. i really want out of this vehicle and would like the option to trade it in now. *tr
On several occasions my engine has stalled. each time it happened i was at a stop and when i started to go through the intersections the engine stalled. it would start again but the stall put me in very dangerous situations. *tr
My 2011 escape came to a stop at a traffic light and i was preparing to make a right on red, when i began to accelerate into traffic the engine stalled. this could have resulted in a potentially deadly accident. i believe the check engine light and the battery light were both illuminated after it stalled. the vehicle started properly after i put the vehicle into park and restarted the engine. ford must address this potentially fatal problem with it's engine design. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they advised the contact that the computer was reading an error and the valve assembly failed, which needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. the failure mileage was 47,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration power. the vehicle was coasted to the side of the road. upon restarting, the vehicle resumed as normal. the failure recurred three times. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis. the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 28,520. ...updated 03/27/13 *bf updated 3/28/13 *cn the consumer stated while on his way to the dealer, the vehicle went into a lurching motion four times. traffic was light at the time, so he was able to coast to the side of the road. three were recorded on the black box, which reached its capacity. the last one, caused the wrench light to illuminate and it remained on. the dealer replaced the throttle body. as of 03/22/13, the vehicle was performing as designed. the consumer stated he entered a four lane divided road with little traffic coming toward him. as he entered the first westbound lane, the vehicle went into a lurching motion, slowing down his forward movement with traffic coming closer to the drivers side of the vehicle. the vehicle then went into neutral mode and he was bale to coast into the left turn lane, continue through the traffic light controlled intersection and coast to the side of the intersecting roadway. he noticed the tax showed 2,000 rpm. he cycled the key and the engine started and operated normally.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated while driving approximately 40 mph the vehicle decelerated on its own. the contact stopped the vehicle on the emergency lane and was able to continue driving normally after restarting it. the wrench warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated a valve had to be replaced. after the vehicle was repaired the failure continued to occur. the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000. *tr
Vehicle was running rough at idle and check engine light was on. at stop lights, stop signs, or any idle time car would buck forward like it was going to stall. *tr
Three times while traveling at 60+ mph on the interstate the vehicle lost all throttle response and a yellow wrench illuminated on the instrument panel. trying to navigate from the left lane across 3 lanes of highspeed rush hour traffic was very dangerous. i took the vehicle to the local dealer as soon as possible and was told it was a bad throttle body. this incident could have resulted in serious injury. *tr
Turned onto my street on my way home from work and all of a sudden couldn't give the car any gas. notice wrench light came on. coasted into driveway turned car off-waited a few and turned back on. no light and car seemed fine. next day took car out and just after getting on highway car did the same thing this time the check engine light came on as well. turned off and on and wrench light went off but engine light stayed on. drove directly to dealership. was told it was the throttle body got stuck and was being replaced. very dangerous when driving on busy roads! *tr
The engine surges and stalls at the most unusual moments. there seems to be no reason for the surge and stalling, but can become very dangerous. i have learned to leave extra extra room in case of surging and i also have adopted the policy of when making decisions to enter traffic, i must account for "in case the car stalls, will i die". 2011 ford escape limited. *tr
I was driving at 55mph going east on 301. i stopped at a stop sign to turn left onto 305, crossing over 301 west. after stopping, i accelerated to cross over 301 west to turn onto 305 and the engine died. luckily i had enough momentum to drift across the road and made it safely onto the shoulder of 301. if i didn't i would have been t-boned by cars traveling <55+mph. *tr
While driving on the interstate at approx 55 to 60 miles per hour i suddenly, without any kind of warning, light etc, began to quickly slow down. the engine was still running but i did not have any forward power. i pulled over, turned it off and back on, the engine light and wrench light came on, the wrench light went out but the engine light stayed on. i started it back up, drove down the berm at about 15-20 and it did it again; i stopped turned it off and back on and managed to get off the interestate. i took it to the dealer and was told it was the throttle body; this was the throttle body that came on the vehicle. about $382.00 later my car seems to be doing okay. my point.....this is dangerous, extremely dangerous - luckily i didn't have a tractor trailer bearing down on me....however, there were several horns and abrupt stops. ford needs to recall these immediately before someone is killed. *tr
2011 ford escape engine stalls at random times: i bought the car as a ford certified pre-owned vehicle in august 2012. in november the stalling issue started. it's happened to me three times now. the car just shuts off and goes into some type of idle mode and a little orange wrench appears on the dash. two times on the interstate and again one morning coming into work. when it stalled on the freeway i was traveling at 70 mph and had to pull off into the grass -- hit something and blew a front tire. this is definitely a safety issue. after changing the front tire it started right back up but only made it 45 minutes before stalling again (this time at 45 mph and on the right side of the road). had same stalling issue on the way to work but at a lower speed. *tr
I was driving on i-75 south, atlanta area, 55 mph, when my ford escape 2011 lost all power and i coasted to side of road during rush hour --- very scary, and very dangerous. took vehicle to ford service and was charged $474.15 to replace defective throttle body (not covered under transmission, engine, powertrain warranty). read on-line that there are many other ford owners experiencing this same dangerous problem. sure hope you will warn other ford owners and organize a recall. please let me know if there is anyone else i can contact to move a recall forward. *tr
While driving the wrench light came on and the car just died, had to pull over, the 2nd time i was going on a busy interstate and going about 70 mph i was lucky there was a place to pull off the road, but then the check engine light came on, and stayed on for the entire trip. when i arrived home and shut the car off and started it again the light was off. i looked into this since i have elderly people i take to and from dr. visits and this seems to be an ongoing problem since 2005 , i have read the complaints on line, my question is does someone have to be in a bad accident or even die before ford will resolve this problem? *tr
While driving in the left hand lane on a busy, busy dallas highway at 60+ mph, the engine failed. i managed to pull over -- across 3 lanes of oncoming traffic -- without getting hit from behind, while being honked at along the way, and managed to pull over on a small shoulder. i turned the car off and restarted it. the next two weeks, it did the same thing a few more times, but i was driving in the far right lane so it was less precarious. i took it into the dealership, where they diagnosed a throttle body failure. my vehicle has 46,000 miles only on it. my understanding is that this is an ongoing problem with fords but they will not recall and fix the problem. someone is going to be killed. *tr
While sitting at a busy intersection, the engine shut down completely...no warning or no indication that there was a problem. i had to put the car in park and restart. a few miles down the road, it happened again. this has happened several other times. last night, i was traveling approximately 30 mph when it shut down again. i was almost rear-ended by the car behind me. i travel 35 miles each way to work...including some highways where the speed limit is 55mph. i'm afraid it will happen there and i'll be rear-ended by some tail-gater. *tr
Driving along and engine hesitated like it cut out is how it felt. this has happened many time since then. when it does this it is like it lost power as though the engine ignition was turn off. *tr
While i was driving the engine stalled down so pulled off the road engine was still running but running rough and no throttle response i shut the engine off then started it back up and everything was fine so drove off. later that same day it did it again. next day brought to ford dealership and they had it for a week trying to get it to do the same thing for them but never did so i picked it back up and was a couple miles away and it stalled on me again brought it back to the dealership they kept it over night again and next day told me it stalled on them and said i need a new throttle body but was on back order. so here i am almost three months later and still no part and today nov. 11 2013 i had the engine stall on me 8 times. *tr
I was driving on the interstate at 70mph when my car seemed to just completely lose power. i had to coast to the side of the road, put the car in park, turn it off and restart it. the incident happened exactly the same a couple other times. also happen once when in the middle of the city. i was at a busy intersection and the car lost power in the middle of the intersection. i was not able to go anywhere until i turned off the car and restarted it. i was nearly t-boned at 5 months pregnant. dealer was having a hard time figuring out what was wrong but finally figured out that it was something wrong with the drive train which caused the engine to stall. *tr
While driving on highway at 60 mph 8/16/2013, my engine shut off. i pulled to side of road. the "wrench" light on dash was on. i called ford bloomington, they gave me roadside assist # and had me call them to send a tow truck to bring me and my vehicle to ford for check up. it was ready later that day, was told that they reprogrammed pcm and updated calibration, they changed air filter and told me i was "good to go" i paid $35.00 for that. the very next friday, i was driving home (at 60 mph) and the engine died again and i pulled to side of road. luckily the engine did restart and i was able to make it home. saturday, i took my suv to ford bloomington, engine sputtered on the way there. ford called rental car for me( without me asking) and again looked at the engine, was told on monday that the throttle body was bad, needed replaced. they had the part, but it was their last one and that the part was on backorder until october. i had part replaced as it was not covered under warranty, for $500.00. also i have a $110.00 bill from enterprise rentals. *jb
Small surges just after stops. total loss of power at highway speeds. july 2012 showed the check engine light, and had to coast to side of the road, gas pedal totally dead, engine and car still running. turn off and restart and all check engine lights go away and car acts normally. dealership found no codes. june 2013 again total loss of power at highway speeds, this time powertrain light comes on, and the car has to coast to the side of the road, gas pedal totally dead, engine and car still running. turn off and restart and all powertrain lights go away and car acts normally. this loss of power has happened 15-20 times to date from july 2012 to july 2013. *tr
While depressing brake to stop at red light or stop sign, engine surges with forced acceleration. must hit the brake hard to hold the vehicle from going on its own. surge lasts a long time and i must put the car in park and turn off the engine. last time car was still surging when i restarted the vehicle, had to turn off car again. this has happened 4 times and my vehicle is still under warranty. the dealership claims they cannot fix the vehicle unless they can see this happen. *tr
While i was driving 55 mph on the interstate in the middle lane when suddenly, with no warning, we were no longer able to get enough throttle to continue moving forward. we had to coast to the side of the road. we were almost rear-ended, i really thought we were going to be killed. it is a very scary situation, going from 55 mph to nothing. the throttle body failed completely and had to be replaced. after doing research on this i have found that many other people have had this same experience, including my sisters 2010 ford escape with only 45000 miles on it. i had just had my 30,000 mile service done on my vehicle two weeks prior and asked them to please check the throttle body since it had happened to my sister, and it was fine at that time. i believe something needs to be done before someone is killed. when i asked what was to keep this from happening again i was told, "nothing, it could happen again at any time". when i asked if there was a recall on it, i was told,"i have been waiting on a recall on this for two years." i was told this from a ford service person at the ford place that repaired my vehicle in indiana. i have reported this to ford at the 800-392-ford number that the same ford service worker gave me when i asked if there was some place i could call about this situation to help get a recall. i no longer feel safe in my vehicle. *js
Going down road, first no gas pedal control , then starts to make engine and whole vehicle pulsate. starting to get worse and dangerous, about 3 to4 times a trip. dealer has told us the part is on backorder ,meanwhile trying to deal with it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated that while inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the vehicle was leaking engine oil. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician diagnosed that the rear main engine seal failed. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 4,327.
I was about two blocks from home, driving the suv and slowed down to turn the corner, when i tried to hit the gas to accelerate, the car wouldn't accelerate past 5mph. a few lights came on the dashboard and i was able to drive it home. when i restarted it, it worked fine. i had the car towed to the dealership, which said they couldn't duplicate the problem. i had only owned the car for 6 months at the time. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated while driving approximately 45 mph, there was a sudden reduction in the engine power without any warning. the failure recurred three times. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. there was an open investigation associated with nhtsa action number: dp12006 (engine). the manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 5,000. the vin was unavailable.
Periodically the vehicle seems to lose power or hesitated then accelerate, i've never had it stall out. although it happened a few times early on this problem has been more frequent lately. i have also noticed that when accelerating, for example on an incline, the vehicles takes several minutes to shift into gear. the vehicle idles very rough, it has been since i bought it but has gotten worse recently. i've mentioned it to the technician when i've taken it in for service and was told this is normal for a four cylinder. i've had many cars over the years 4 cyl and 6 cyl and i've never had this happen. i've read some of the other complaints with the same description as what my vehicle is doing. *tr
Shortly after purchasing the escape the engine seemed to quit when making a turn. turning off the key and restarting the engine worked. nothing for months and then it happened again. my wife thought the engine was quitting so i asked the dealer if they were aware of similar issues. all servicing was performed at ford until the warranty was out. never a mention of any problems from the dealer.the engine continued to have intermittent issues and one day it happened when i was driving. i determined the engine was not quitting but would drop to about 1000 rpm with no throttle response. if you kept the transmission in drive the vehicle would decelerate quickly and sometimes would not allow moving to a safe location. restarting the engine twice always resets the problem and it randomly happens at a later date. it is very intermittent and always happens without warning. it's getting worse with age. *tr
After stopping and upon acceleration the engine completely shuts down and the car stalls. after putting the car in park and restarting the car, it runs okay. this has happened to me 4 times over a 23 month period. each time i have taken the vehicle to the dealership. the first two times i was told the car was still breaking in and it must be due to the gas i was using. the third time, they replaced the throttle body. to my knowledge the "wrench" light only came on once. they said they had a number of vehicles that this had happened with and replacing the throttle body helped. three weeks after they replaced the throttle body, it happened again! this time only the engine light came on. ford says they need a code to try to fix the problem. the dealership told me that there was one other person, who has the same make and model as mine that this is happening too. this person also had the throttle body replaced. the fact that no code is tripped is a problem in itself! please help! i do not want anyone to be killed because of this problem. *tr
