Problems with 2011 Ford Escape ENGINE

On average, the 2011 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 52 078 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2011 Ford Escape

While driving on interstate vehicle went into limp home mode. i was able to navigate to the side of the road without incident but could have been seriously injured. after restarting the vehicle everything appears fine. i believe ford is already under investigation for incidents like this and i wanted to add mine to show the severity of this issue. a recall is needed asap. *tr

Today on nearby interstate highway, suddenly my throttle pedal acted useless with no power, engine idled down. throttle pedal useless in any position. engine outline light came on as well a open end wrench. wrench warning light in listed in owners manual as "throttle control / powertrain fault, please contact dealer." i called the ford dealer service department, he knew pretty quickly the defect i was describing. he informed me that my 2011 ford escape is a couple thousand miles over the 3yr 36,000 mile warranty. but he also said i may be covered under an extended emissions warranty. my car is just over 2 years old. this is a dangerous defect in the car which is documented as being under investigation in these nhtsa.gov websites. please raise the status of this defect to be an official recall before someone dies. *tr

While daughter driving vehicle in houston, driving on freeway, approx. 65 mph, vehicle lost engine acceleration power, no response from gas pedal, warning lights (wrench symbol) illuminated. had to coast/idle across traffic lanes to get to shoulder out of traffic- very dangerous and scary - turned off engine, restarted, vehicle then operated as normal at the time, but event has since been recurring. now has happened 6 other times... very dangerous situation for any driver, especially a young driver. might add that this particular model is very popular with young adults - you will see many in college towns. very dangerous. internet research reveals many complaints and probable cause suspected to be throttle body malfunction. manufacturer must be aware by now. having car repaired - expecting cost of approximately $600 - $800. *tr

About 12:30 pm october 17th i was attempting to pull out of a parking lot onto the feeder road of a freeway. as i stepped on the gas to pull out, i got a surge and then my car stalled leaving me stranded on the side of a busy road. the wrench light came on and while my car still had power, it would not accelerate. my vehicle was almost hit 3 times by drivers who were not paying attention. after about 10 minutes i was able to get the car restarted and i drove to my destination. about 7:30 am on october 22 this happened again in my neighborhood as i was driving down the street going 20 miles an hour. wrench light was on. october 28th about 11:00 am, i was doing 40 mph down a two lane road and the car did not surge, but i did lose all acceleration and had to stop and turn my car off and wait about 5-10 minutes to restart. the wrench light was on. october 29th about 12:30 pm, i was making a right hand turn onto a busy street and the car stalled and i had to turn off the engine. the wrench light was on. i restarted the car and less than a mile later it happened again, but this time the service engine light came on. *tr

I was driving approx. 10 mph, the gas peddle stopped working, i would press it but nothing happened. the little wrench appeared on the dash. i stopped and the motor started running loudly and roughly shaking the vehicle. i put it in park, turned off the key, waiting a moment and restarted it. the restart took longer then normal but it was fine after that. this has happened 5 times now, each time i was going approx. 10-15 mph. it's dangerous because the car cannot driven out of the way of other vehicles. the 3rd time this happened i was slowing turning left through an intersection, there was oncoming traffic, had the car not cut off, i would have been safe to clear the intersection however it cut off making the oncoming driver swerve into the other lane to avoid hitting me. it's very scary and dangerous. *tr

At 65 mph in rush hour traffic my vehicle transmission disengaged and my vehicle started coasting. i could not accelerate, the engine vibrated roughly when i tried to accelerate, and i had to pull over to the side of the road. it is my understanding the throttle body stopped working and caused this to occur. the same thing happened 3 more times on this same day. once at 10 mph, once at 45 mph, and once at 55 mph. each time i was able to pull over, shut off the vehicle and restart it. the transmission would re-engage and i could continue on my way. *tr

Throttle quit working.would only idle and check engine light and wrench light came on.pulled off on the side of the road and had to cut engine off and back on to get throttle working. happened again one week later.just lucky was not on interstate in heavy traffic doing 70 mph. both times engine code was p2111, throttle actuator stuck open. vehicle has 60000 miles on it and dealer said throttle body was not under power train and was only covered under the 3/36 warranty. purchased new throttle body at dealer and parts manager said it was the fourth revision to the part number. hope they got it right this time, it could put you in a very dangerous situation. *tr

I was on the freeway on my 2011 ford escape the 4th lane when the car made a sudden noise of loss of power and my dashboard lights when dimmer...the power of my car was diminishing and it felt as if the car engine was going to die on me...scary...i felt my heart drop to my stomach...looked left and had cars coming on the contiguous lane so i could not move to the emergency lane/shoulder, looked right and fortunately no cars were coming immediately (my steering was still ok ) other cars were far away so i moved to my right 3 lanes and even though the car felt that it was going to stop i continued with the momentum it had. i was able to get off the freeway since there was an exit as i moved the 3 lanes. very scary experience. the car sort of stalled at the corner but i was in a safe spot. i called the dealership immediately to ask for the roadside assistance number and the service department person asked me if i turned the car off would it start again? the car did start again as if nothing had happened. really crazy! when the dealership checked it they diagnosed faulty throttle body, they fixed it apparently but now i am driving on the slow lane all the time unless i am passing because i have fears it might happen again. i lived a very scary situation. *tr

After coming to a near stop, the engine began to surge and the vehicle lurched 6 or 7 times. after touching the throttle, the engine became responsive again. *tr

I bought my 2011 ford escape brand new and it has about 40k miles on it. i've never had any issues. it's been a great car with all of my traveling and i've always trusted that it would get me from point a to point b safely. until today! i got an oil change and check-up last week, no problems. this morning, i was driving on a busy 4-lane interstate when my car lost all power and started shaking and jerking. i was going about 65-70 mph when it stalled and quickly decelerated as cars were swerving around me and speeding past. the engine was still running, the check engine light popped on, and pressing the gas pedal did nothing. it was a miracle that i was able to safely maneuver over to the shoulder without causing an accident and killing someone or myself. i was completely caught off guard and spooked by the whole thing. i restarted my car and the check engine light was off and the car seemed normal. i got off at the next exit to avoid playing car accident roulette on the highway. everything was fine for the next few miles. then.. it happened again! this time as i was approaching a busy intersection. scary, scary stuff. it was like driving a ticking time bomb! this time the check engine light remained on and it took me twice to get my engine to restart. i drove directly to the nearest ford dealership. i was very caught off guard as my car had just been serviced and had always been reliable in the past. ford replaced the throttle body. after a simple google search, i discovered how common this issue has been and was shocked. i cannot believe that this part hasn't been recalled yet! i find it to be extremely irresponsible of ford to be so complacent with a known issue when people's lives are in jeopardy. turning your back on a problem and ignoring it is not satisfactory customer service. this part needs to be recalled asap before someone is hurt or killed. *tr

At highway speed, engine and drive train became totally unresponsive on congested dallas freeway. wrench light came on, no other indications. vehicle lost all speed and was forced to cross traffic lanes with no motive power to safety lane very nearly causing three different traffic accidents with other vehicles. totally limp. once parked, shut off motor and restarted. engine started and drive train engaged again. wrench light no longer appeared, no other indicating lamps or errors. returned to roadway and within 5 minutes same thing recurred. pulled over, restarted engine, drive train reengaged, returned to roadway and exited to side roads to home. once on the side road, same thing happened again in front of a semi coming up from behind and narrowly escaped getting hit from behind before pulling over again. same routine occurred 4 more times before i could get it into the dealership. last occurrence in addition to the wrench light coming on and off, the engine light came on and stayed on. vehicle condition is known, reported multiple times and has been investigated by the nthsb already without a recall. this known condition is extremely dangerous to the operators of affected vehicles and to other unsuspecting motorist and the general public. pressure needs to be applied to ford motor company to address this matter and notify affected owners and operators of affected vehicles. today the vehicle is at the dealership and with just a thousand or so miles over warranty, dealer says it is not covered and the estimated $600 repair is my issue. *tr

My wife was driving her car home when the wrench light came on and the car went into limp mode dramatically reducing the cars speed to 15 mph. good thing she had gotten off the interstate before this happened. the check engine light came on i read the code it was p2111 throttle stuck open. turning the car off reset the throttle body for about 5 miles then the car went back into limp mode and it even quit. this happened on 9/27/13 on monday 9/30/13 i called the local ford dealer they said the car was out of warranty by mileage and the throttle body was not covered. the ford dealer had 2 throttle bodies on hand my wife took my car the ford dealer and bought a throttle body for her car at a cost of $181. after i installed the new throttle body the check engine light and the wrench light have went out and the car runs like new. my biggest concern if this had happened wile she was on the interstate and the car went into limp mode this could have cause a major accident maybe even killing her and my niece who was with her. *tr

While driving on my morning work commute i was stunned when my 2011 ford escape just became unresponsive and was coasting on a 5 lane freeway doing 65 mph. i really did not know what was going on since the only signal that could classify a problem was the little wrench light at the bottom left of the dashboard that was on. i did not do anything out of the ordinary, and i did not notice anything out of the ordinary with the ride. my observations - rpms dropped below 1,000, speed was coasting but dropping since there was no acceleration, electrical was on, steering was sluggish like something was wrong, and a small shaking of the vehicle occurred. the only thing i could do is put my blinker to move to the shoulder but my fellow commuters did not respect that very well. so i promoted my desired to get off the freeway by turning my hazard emergency lights and that's when they started to move away from me to get to the shoulder. my experience did rattle me since i felt hopeless in a sense that i wanted to hit the brake and remembered that i was on a freeway which would be really bad. after pulling over to the shoulder i did manage to turn the vehicle off completely pull the key out and give it about a minute. after i started it up again i figured it was a single occurrence, which i was wrong when it happened again on the way home but i was down the street from my house.

My vehicle stalled twice yesterday while going though busy intersections and the wrench light came on. i would pull over at a super slow speed and then turn the car off and back on. finding this rare for a well maintained 2 year old vehicle, i looked up "escape stalling" on google and found a plethora of complaints. i took it to the dealer today and mentioned what was happening with the car and what i had seen on the internet and he didn't give any credence to it. i am still waiting for a diagnosis and hope the problem can be repaired. luckily there was no one behind me either time...but this could have easily been a very nasty accident because there is no warning that the car is going to stall. notes: i purchased the vehicle in nj february 2011

While driving down the highway my vehicle went straight to limp mode with no warning at all. i had to pull to the side of the highway while traffic was stopping behind me and trying to pass me. a wrench light and check engine light came on and i could not throttle my vehicle at all. i cut the ignition off, let it sit a minute and cranked it again. the problem went away. this has happened numerous times the last 2 days. it has happened while trying to go through intersections and while turning across traffic. the diagnostics at advanced auto shows throttle body stuck open. this is a very dangerous situation that seems to be happening to a lot of these vehicles.

As i was driving down the road, all the sudden without notice, the vehicle went to 1 rpm and 5 miles per hour. tried to accelerate and it would not, then the wrench light came on. i put on my flashers immediately so i would not get rear ended by cars coming fast behind me. then, the vehicle stalled out. the check engine light never came on. sat there in the rain for a few minutes. then, started the vehicle back up again, to get it home. then, i was afraid to drive it, called the ford dealer to get my vehicle in, they could not look at it until monday of the next week, so had vehicle towed on saturday to dealer---extra cost involved on a 2 year old vehicle. the service department looked at it, they could not duplicate the problem. i pick up the vehicle on 9/25/2013. drove the vehicle for 4 days, then happened again on 9/29/13 and it had been raining. then, drove the next day 9/30/13, again threw the wrench symbol after going to 1 rpm and 2 to 5 miles per hour and bucking, could not accelerate at all. it was dry on this day. again, put my flashers on this time was going 30 mph on a narrow two lane road. remember the service engine light never came on, but they were able to find a code this time. they said it was the throttle body, so i began asking more questions as to why ford has not recalled this since so many across the usa are having issues. no one knows, so as a consumer on a tight budget --like many of us these days....gets to figure out all the money pieces. i guess i will need a third job just for vehicle repairs on a two year old vehicle. this was a very scary experience and ford needs to do something about this before anyone else is seriously injured or killed. this problem should not be happening with a two year old maintained vehicle. now because it is over the 36,000 miles more money out of pocket....geez. *tr

Driving at a speed of 25 mph and car suddenly lost engine power and coasted to a stop. turned car off for 5 minutes then started car back up and it ran fine. next day did same thing at 45mph with same results. week later same thing only this time on the interstate highway going 70 mph. same results: coasted to stop, let car sit for a few minutes then restarted and ran fine. next day, same thing at 50 mph entering the highway. next day took car to dealership. dealership repaired car. we had to pay for repair. since the repair. no issues. *tr

My daughter was entering an intersection preparing to turn left. when she got enough of a clearing between vehicles to turn she went to accelerate to go thru with the left turn and she had no gas to go. the peddle hit the floor and the car died. she was able to coast thru the light with out being hit. but after that the car had to be towed home. we had to replace the throttle body on the vehicle. she was very lucky not to be in a serious crash because of this part going bad! *tr

The car stopped responding to the gas pedal as i was merging into traffic. i pulled over, turned the car off and waited 15 minutes. i turned it back on, had the same behavior when i tried pulling out of the parking lot. i had to toe the vehicle to the dealership. the mechanic knew right away what the issue was, mentioning that it was common. the dealer replaced the throttle body and charged a $100 premium to use my warranty, despite it being a "known" issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. in addition, the vehicle sporadically failed to respond to acceleration attempts. the contact referenced nhtsa action number: dp12006 (engine) and stated that the parts were not available to complete the repair under the technical service bulletin. the approximate failure mileage was 53,227. the consumer stated the vehicle went into limp mode causing the vehicle to accelerate at 5 mph.

This following incident happened both yesterday and today. driving around 20 mph and service light came on immediately dumping me in "limp mode". took the vehicle to both autozone and another private repair shop with better diagnostics, neither could pick up a defect code. research on ford escapes today, shows that this could be a problem. i do not want the vehicle to go into limp mode while driving down the road. hoping the nhtsa recalls the escapes to resolve this issue. *jb

While driving at 45 mph engine lost power maintenance and check engine light came on. after stopping and shutting down the engine. engine was hard to restart. engine started and i resumed driving. now this is a regular occurrence happening with no warning. the code in the computer is p2112, throttle actuator control system stuck closed. it happens at various speed including interstate speeds. while looking for a replacement part i found this is happening to a lot of escape owners and a recall was issued for earlier models. it appears to me ford has yet to fix the problem. i am reluctant to invest the $500-$600 for the repair if it is just going to happen again. *tr

Vehicle lost power. would only idle. wrench light illuminated. had to shut vehicle off and restart. *tr

Tl* the contact leased a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving. the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where the contact was awaiting diagnosis of the failure. it was determined the vehicle needed a new throttle body. the failure and current mileage was 40,000. updated 10/17/13*lj the consumer has since returned the leased vehicle.

Was driving for about an hour, then came to a stop light. when the light turned green and i pressed the accelerator, the engine died (but the car's electronics stayed on) and the check engine light came on, no movement from the car. i turned it off and back on. the engine struggled to start. i then proceeded to drive another half mile at about 55mph, and the engine stalled again while at driving speed. i managed to pull over, turned it off, waited 5 minutes, then was able to drive 3 miles home. a month and half later, my wife was driving at roughly 30mph and the engine did the same thing(stalled). turned it off, struggled to start, but managed to drive 5 miles home. i took it to ford in between the first and second incident, they said there was nothing wrong, but cleaned the throttle body. i have since learned of investigation # pe13-003 which appears to be the exact problem i am having. ford has not helped me in the matter, but i believe this issue needs to be addressed. *tr

I was driving to work in the morning and my escape stalled while going through a four way intersection. i thought that this may have been an isolated incident so i continued driving. i then noticed while i was in traffic that the engine would shutter and not idle normally. it stalled again the next day. i took it to the ford dealership in the city where i live with the check engine light on, they tested it and then the light reset itself?? they took it on a test drive and nothing happened with them while they were driving so they said that there was nothing that they could do. my car is shutting off while i am in trafic and driving, this is a serious safety issue. i have been blessed that the brakes work on the cars that drive around me or else i would have been in a serious accident on more than one occasion this week!!! please recall these cars and get them fixed before someone dies!!!!

I was driving 35-40 mph when all of the sudden my car started to slow down. i did not know what was happening at the time and i kept pressing the gas pedal but the car continued to slow. before the car stopped, i pulled over to the side of the road, placed the car in park, turned it off, and opened my car door. then i turned my car on again and was able to drive to the place i was going in about 7 min. i stayed at that place for around 30 min and then got in my car again where 2 min after i started driving, the car stalled again. i pulled over, turned the car off, and opened the driver's door. then i turned the car back on and preceded to drive home (about a ten minute car ride).

Car slowing down to a stop and the cuts off in the middle of driving around 3/4 had to put foot on brake and gas at same time. *jb

On august 29, 2013 driver of a 2011 ford escape was attempting to turn left and accelerate the vehicle from a stoplight when the car jerked forward and would not accelerate or go with flow of traffic, and with traffic moving behind the vehicle creating dangerous situation. the dashboard showed a wrench light, and driver found it hard to move car forward as it went into "limp home" mode, sputtering all the way. the car was finally moved to the side of the road, shut off, and restarted, and driven the 3 miles home. owner will take car to the dealership (carmax). driver assumes will find throttle body code. the part and service should be covered under extended warranty. however, driver/owner will be out of pocket for deductible $250. family was in car and this is definitely a safety concern on this vehicle. when it goes into limp mode there is no warning and may cause an accident when the vehicle suddenly decelerates to snail speed. i believe ford must recall the faulty throttle body in the 2009-2011 models as they are safety issues for drivers in the car and other drivers on the road. *tt

I was traveling on interstate at 65-70 mph, when my escape's rpm's all of a sudden dropped to 1 and would not react to the gas pedal, luckily i was in the slow lane and managed to coast off the interstate. there was an 18-wheeler behind me and i started to panic at the speed he was gaining on me. i finally managed to get my hazards on to notify him that i was having issues. if i had not have been in the slow lane i would not have been able to get off the interstate before the car stopped completely. this is very dangerous, if i had been in the far left lane or the middle lanes the car could have stopped in the middle of the interstate. i took the vehicle to the ford store and they informed me that it was the throttle body. i then googled the problem and found out that this is a real issue with a large majority of the vehicles not just a limited faulty part. i don't understand how ford cannot see that this is a safety issue if someone goes to make a left turn and this happens another car could crash into them. anytime your car does not react properly it becomes a safety issue. when an 18-wheeler is behind a vehicle that responds the way mine did today it is a safety issue. as you know a fully loaded tractor trailer cannot stop as easily as a passenger vehicle and if the vehicle in front of them all of a sudden looses power and cannot get out of their way there is going to be an accident. once i got stopped my car did restart but getting to that point was very scary.

Was at the stop light, light turns green press the gas pedal car did not move i was almost rear ended by another vehicle. wrench light was on dash board car start to putter would not accelerate. coasted out of the middle of the street and then the transmission light was on dash board, had to get car towed home. found out it was the throttle body and it is a defect from the manufacturer, but ford will not replace the consumer is responsible for replacing and it has an out of pocket fee of $548.00 to get the problem fixed.this is very dangerous, i was lucky i am afraid to drive the truck do not want this to happen to me again. ford should at least try and come up with some type of solution to this problem. *tr

Driving along and all of a sudden no gas - no power to engine - can push gas pedal to floor with nothing happening. took car to shop - had fuel injection service, trasmission service on saturday. same thing happened 3 times on sunday. (once on the highway and twice on back roads) took car to different mechanic on monday. body throttle cleaned. happened again on tuesday in the middle of a busy intersection! did some research ford has recall on body throttle in fusion and possible a recall coming in escape. called ford to question about escape and customer service could tell me nothing about a recall. can you help - do you know if a recall is coming? my escape is in the shop again for the 3rd time in 4 days! *tt

at first, while driving, the car would shut down and not respond to throttle movement, a huge safety issue in traffic. after pulling over and restarting the car, the problem seemed to go away for a while. the problem seemed to be intermittent the first few times. finally the car shut down to an idle and would not respond to throttle movement and the wrench and engine lights came on. the car would only run limp mode. the odb codes read a p2111 and p2112 (throttle actuator control stuck open, and throttle actuator stuck closed) respectively. we had to tow the vehicle to the dealer. we were told that the entire throttle body had to be replaced at a cost of $666. the problem is that the part is unavailable for 2 weeks and maybe up to a month. we have 39000 miles on the vehicle, the warranty ran out at 36000. this issue is also not covered under the power train warranty. this seems to be a widespread issue and i am disappointed that ford is unwilling to make this right and produce a recall. *tr

On august 21, 2013 driver of a 2011 ford escape was attempting to turn and accelerate the vehicle from a stoplight when the car jerked forward and would not accelerate with oncoming traffic, and with traffic moving behind the vehicle. the dashboard showed a wrench light, and drive found it hard to stop car as it was sputtering and jerking forward. the car was finally moved to the side of the road, shut off, and restarted, and drive the 10 miles home. owner took car to the dealership where throttle body code was discovered. this part is not covered under powertrain warranty, thus owner fix cost is $600.00. this is a safety concern on the vehicle, when it goes into safe mode there is no warning and can cause an accident when the vehicle suddenly decelerates to under 1000 rpm. i believe ford should recall the faulty throttle body in the 2009-2011 models as they are safety issues for drivers in the car and other drivers on the road. *tr

I was driving back from lunch and as i accelerated up a slight interstate hill, i experienced no acceleration. i immediately went to neutral and tried to rev the engine, nothing. i coasted to the emergency lane where i safely stopped and placed the car in park. once in park, it was vibrating, sputtering and slightly lunging so i turned the car off. i sat for a few minutes, then restarted my vehicle. i was concerned about merging into traffic, so i turned on my emergency flashers and rode with them on for the remainder of my 15 minute drive. i immediately called my dealer and scheduled an appointment for the next morning. on my way home, the same scenario occurred 2 more times. thank heavens for emergency lanes! *tr

I was driving along at about 50mph and i completely lost power to my 2011 escape. the accelerator did not function and would not rev the engine. i tried putting it in neutral and restarting with no success. the engine was still running but i had no power. i pulled off the road and turned off the engine. a couple of minutes later i tried to restart it so i could wait in a better location and the car started. i was able to drive to my destination but in going home the car stalled again. again i had to turn off the engine in order to restart. i took it into the dealership the next morning and they had to replace the throttle at a cost of $505.00. *tr

I was pulling out of the doctor's office with my wife and newborn child and as i pulled out (i had plenty of safe distance if my car were functioning properly) my car all of a sudden lost any acceleration capabilities and the rpm's dropped extremely low. the speed limit on the road was 55 and it started when i got to 30mph making it so the traffic already on the road ran up right behind me and nearly hit me. i was helpless and could not go any faster. this is an extremely dangerous defect, even though the car never lost complete power i lost all control to accelerate and continued to slow with fast traffic all around me. i am lucky that it did not result in an accident or any injuries to myself, family, or other motor vehicle operators. i took my escape to the closest ford dealership who informed me that the electronic throttle body had failed. it was not very comforting when he knew exactly what was going on when i told him what happened because he had seen this same situation so many times. i cannot believe that there is not a recall on this manufacturer defect and i hope it does not result in any accidents or worse. *tr

While attempting to merge onto the highway i lost engine power in my car. i was unable to accelerate or move and when i put the car into park it began to shake. i had to turn it off and try to get it to start several times before it would start again... *tr

Was driving along to my firefighter job when i felt my car loose power and noticed a wrench light come up on my dash. i attempted to accelerate however couldn't. i safely was able to pull off to side of the road where once i came to a stop the car jerked. i shut down my engine, waited a few mins then restarted the car to which car was running fine. i continued to work and started to research what problem can be and noticed many people have had same issue. *tr

While driving my 2011 ford escape suddenly lost all power (almost felt like a stall) and the wrench light on the dash was illuminated. i pulled to the side of the road, turned it off, and after turning the vehicle back on it operated as normal. this has happened three times over the past week. *tr

I was accelerating and the car then just stopped accelerating. it felt like the transmission had just let go, because the car would not speed up when i stepped on the gas pedal. when i tried to stop, the idle was very rough and the car wanted to jerk forward. luckily, i was able to get the car stopped in a safe place. when i re-started the car, the ignition was turning over, but it took several seconds before it fired. i have since brought my car to the service shop, they told me it was a defective throttle body. they said that they have had to repair this on a number of occasions. the gentleman sitting next to me says that he had the same issue with a similar vehicle - same family of car. *tr

Lost throttle control, pulled over, turned engine off, and restarted to correct problem. this happened three more times over following month at 70mph on freeway, 50mph on surface street and an intersection at a stoplight. exact same behavior (loss of accelerator, turn engine off, restart). dealership replaced throttle body. five months (7,000 miles) later problem occurred again at a busy intersection almost resulting in a serious traffic accident. i took it back to ford, they performed tests, said they already replaced the throttle body with the new one and made no repair even though i told them the car was unsafe to drive with the defect. there will be serious accidents that result from this defect. *tr

While driving at speeds from 50 - 65 mph, my escape will suddenly lose power. the engine remains running, but the accelerator pedal has no effect. the vehicle will continue to move very slowly after moving to the shoulder of the road. the "wrench" light is indicated on the dash. after coming to a stop, turning the engine off and restarting, the problem is temporarily resolved. after some research on the nhtsa site, this same problem occurs in the escape and ford fusion. ford is completely aware of the problem, but has not issued a recall. the problem is the throttle control body. a local ford dealer offered to replace the part for approximately $600. i purchased the part for $350 and will replace myself as it is a simple 10 minute job. this is a very dangerous defect and i wish that ford would take this seriously. *tr

When trying to accelerate into traffic, the engine dropped to idle and the gas pedal had no affect. temporary solution was to pull over, turn engine off, restart (which required excessive cranking) which seemed to resolve the issue. throttle works again. this issue has now happened 3 additional times and we have parked the car as it is unsafe and unreliable. ford dealer has no clue about the issue and can't schedule getting it into the shop for at least 2 weeks. *tr

While driving my family in our 2011 ford escape at 65mph on an interstate - i suddenly experienced a total loss of power. the engine did not quit - but rather decelerated rapidly to idle speed. i immediately pulled over to the side of the highway and attempted to rev the engine and shift the transmission into park, and then back into drive - with no result. i turned the vehicle off and waited 1 minute, to see if it could possibly be a computer problem. i started the car, revved the engine, shifted into drive and proceeded at normal speed. the following day this same thing happened to my wife on another highway. i called a ford dealer and a trustworthy repair shop - and they both pointed to the throttle body assembly in the fuel system - which seems to be a common problem. i had a new throttle body installed after a ford dealer hooked up diagnostic equipment and verified the issue. repair cost was $513.68 parts and labor. i feel that this is a very dangerous condition - and a recall of the vehicles equipped with this part, should be happen immediately. i have read many other accounts on the internet of this exact condition. it is just a mater of time before a failure like this will occur - and a following vehicle - perhaps a semi-truck will not be able to stop in time causing a very serious injury or fatality. luckily my wife and i were in light traffic on the freeway. *tr

While driving at 45 mph, engine cut out but remained idling with no power. pulled to side of road, shut car off then restarted while in "park" gear position. traveled 1500 miles without incident, then engine lost power on 08/12/2013 while traveling 70 mph on freeway. pulled to side of freeway and restarted car while in "park." car ran fine for another 1500 miles, then on 09/06/2013 began losing power several times while going 30 mph (odometer was at 28,944). limped home and called lincoln/ford dealership and arranged for tow. car is presently at dealership waiting for warranty repair; "throttle body assembly" on order. there was no recall notice sent to me regarding this ford escape engine fault. the freeway loss of power incident put family in extreme danger while attempting to get to side of road. *tr

While driving my 2011 ford escape to work when all of the sudden it lost power. my first thought was that the engine had died, but when i looked down i saw that it was still bouncing between 500 and 1000 rpm. i also noticed that the red wrench light had come on. i was able to get the car pulled over into a parking lot. i was not sure what was going on so i shut the car off. a minute or two later i started the car and it started right up. i then continued on to work but after exciting the freeway i stopped at a red light when i went to accelerate from the light the car did the same thing. i was able to pull over and did the same as before. i made it to work with no further issues this time the check engine light came on and stayed on. that afternoon i took the car to the dealership to have it looked at and they asked me to bring it by the next morning. i drove the car home from there with no incident. the next morning i took the escape back to the dealership after waiting for about three hours the told me that there was a problem with the throttle body. i proceeded to drive the car home and i ended up having the same issue with the care going into what i guess the call safe mode. i was as before able to shut the car down and start it back up again. this happen going across a two lane bridge in traffic luckily the car behind me was far enough behind me that the did not run into me but came real close. *tr

Was driving on highway at 55 mph, the wrench light came on dashboard and the car started decelerating. would not accelerate, had to pull over, turn car off, then back on, in order for car to accelerate again. second incident seemed like car's power completely shut off and would not come back on again after a rough idling stop. *tr

Throttle body stops to only idle upon accelerating or use of throttle from stop. sometimes it will allow to accelerate up to 30 to 40 mph before it quits working upon throttle input from driver. so, it will only idle after accelerating half or part way through an intersection and you are at the mercy of incline or decline of road to hopefully coast to safety. it has done this while turning left while having to yield to oncoming traffic. it caused oncoming traffic to have to stop while i got stranded in middle of turn. safety issue for sure. *tr

Engine cut out while driving at about 55mph and 'check engine' light lit up on the dashboard. i pulled over to side of road and waited about ten minutes before re-starting vehicle. the vehicle started ok but 'check engine' light stayed on. i took it to service station and they ran diagnostic and got code p2111 - throttle actuator stuck open. i made repair appointment at ford dealer for next day. while driving home from work the engine stalled at a traffic light but re-started ok. *tr
