Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2011 Ford Escape

As i was traveling on interstate 10 @ 70 mph over lake pontchartrain near new orleans, my 2011 ford escape stalled; i lost all power. accelerator was unresponsive. i managed to pull over and turned off the engine. i restarted and it started up, running normally again for about 2 miles, when the problem recurred. the wrench symbol appeared with the stall and then disappeared once i restarted, though the engine light came on and remained on when i restarted. i also noticed at times i had to really hold down the brake to prevent the vehicle from surging forward on its own. the problem kept occurring every few miles, and i repeated the same procedure. i elected to keep attempting travel; the problem was intermittent and i was in an unsavory section of eastern new orleans. sometimes the car would go 5 miles, sometimes 5 blocks, sometimes 5 feet. i nervously managed to get home, and after researching online i found numerous complaints from others with ford escapes, as recently as 2 days ago (sep. 28, 2013), detailing the exact same problem. some people who had these identical issues resolved said the ford service departments claimed it was the "throttle body." i have only ever taken this vehicle for all service, always on time, to the ford dealer where it was purchased in mandeville, la. apparently this "throttle body" issue is common and currently under investigation by the nhtsa. these vehicles should all immediately be recalled. it is only a matter of time until a fatal crash occurs because of this problem. the automatic surge problem is absolutely lethal. i'm going to a ford service center in the morning, but am prepared to be served with the $600-$1200 "throttle body" repair bill. i found the following website: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/ford_escape.htm search "throttle body" & you'll find numerous complaints about this very same issue. *tr

Wrench light came on while my wife was driving her 2011 escape in traffic on the highway and the car went into "limp mode". if you are not expecting the issue (and who would be) it is difficult to maneuver a failing vehicle to the shoulder while on the highway. after the car was turned off and restarted the issue cleared. investigating this am i see that there are numerous complaints about the same issue with the throttle body. the car has not been taken to the repair shop to confirm the problem yet. if this is the same issue and ford is obviously aware, they should be ashamed of themselves. this is a major safety concern. *tr

At highway speed, engine and drive train became totally unresponsive on congested dallas freeway. wrench light came on, no other indications. vehicle lost all speed and was forced to cross traffic lanes with no motive power to safety lane very nearly causing three different traffic accidents with other vehicles. totally limp. once parked, shut off motor and restarted. engine started and drive train engaged again. wrench light no longer appeared, no other indicating lamps or errors. returned to roadway and within 5 minutes same thing recurred. pulled over, restarted engine, drive train reengaged, returned to roadway and exited to side roads to home. once on the side road, same thing happened again in front of a semi coming up from behind and narrowly escaped getting hit from behind before pulling over again. same routine occurred 4 more times before i could get it into the dealership. last occurrence in addition to the wrench light coming on and off, the engine light came on and stayed on. vehicle condition is known, reported multiple times and has been investigated by the nthsb already without a recall. this known condition is extremely dangerous to the operators of affected vehicles and to other unsuspecting motorist and the general public. pressure needs to be applied to ford motor company to address this matter and notify affected owners and operators of affected vehicles. today the vehicle is at the dealership and with just a thousand or so miles over warranty, dealer says it is not covered and the estimated $600 repair is my issue. *tr

My wife was driving her car home when the wrench light came on and the car went into limp mode dramatically reducing the cars speed to 15 mph. good thing she had gotten off the interstate before this happened. the check engine light came on i read the code it was p2111 throttle stuck open. turning the car off reset the throttle body for about 5 miles then the car went back into limp mode and it even quit. this happened on 9/27/13 on monday 9/30/13 i called the local ford dealer they said the car was out of warranty by mileage and the throttle body was not covered. the ford dealer had 2 throttle bodies on hand my wife took my car the ford dealer and bought a throttle body for her car at a cost of $181. after i installed the new throttle body the check engine light and the wrench light have went out and the car runs like new. my biggest concern if this had happened wile she was on the interstate and the car went into limp mode this could have cause a major accident maybe even killing her and my niece who was with her. *tr

On 9/23/13 i was driving from houston tx to hendersonville nc. outside mobile al just before dusk, it felt like the transmission fell out. i left exxon after fueling. at a traffic light, engine suddenly gushed and paused. wrench light came on. engine light came on. i applied gas, but engine wouldn't respond. put car in park, turned off engine. turned back on, wrench light gone. check engine light still on. drove across intersection, pulled into parking lot. car seemed fine except for check engine light. drove out, entered freeway, went one mile, car repeated problem: suddenly gushed, paused, regardless of amount of pressure to gas. wrench light on. pulled off freeway, turned off car, turned back on. check engine light appeared. drove one more mile on side of freeway. now full dark, no other place for me but edge of road or ditch. pulled into truck weigh station, called ford. ford representative and i determined car was drivable, so drove to montgomery al, planning to visit ford dealer. next morning when i started car, no lights on dash. continued trip. thought it was issued with gas capless system, perhaps not completely sealed when finished gassing. i discussed with ford rep, he said there had been reports similar, but he did not go into detail about throttle body. if he had, i would have accepted his offer of tow immediately. never would i have continued to drive, especially at night (and as a woman by myself). *tr

While driving on the highway, my suv jerked slightly and then just decelerated, and i could not maintain speed. i had to cross over 3 lanes to the side of the road and turned the suv off. there was no warning, and i had not applied the break. i noticed the wrench light came on the dashboard. i waited a minute and turned the suv on again. i was able to get to my destination, however, during this trip, the suv jerked slightly again, but this time there was a slight acceleration. i was able to maintain a safe speed for the remainder of the trip, as it only lasted for a couple seconds. i contacted the service department of the dealership where i purchased the car and where i regularly take the car for maintenance. the serviceman knew exactly what the problem was when i described the problems i was having. he suggested i bring the car in for service as soon as possible. the car was towed to the dealership, and they replaced the electronic throttle. i was told it was not covered under warranty, but since i had an extended warranty, they would only charge me $100.00. when i picked up the car, i actually paid $106.00, and i was never informed that this was a recalled part. i should not have been charged anything, as ford was well aware that this part was defective and have been for many months now.

As i was driving down the road, all the sudden without notice, the vehicle went to 1 rpm and 5 miles per hour. tried to accelerate and it would not, then the wrench light came on. i put on my flashers immediately so i would not get rear ended by cars coming fast behind me. then, the vehicle stalled out. the check engine light never came on. sat there in the rain for a few minutes. then, started the vehicle back up again, to get it home. then, i was afraid to drive it, called the ford dealer to get my vehicle in, they could not look at it until monday of the next week, so had vehicle towed on saturday to dealer---extra cost involved on a 2 year old vehicle. the service department looked at it, they could not duplicate the problem. i pick up the vehicle on 9/25/2013. drove the vehicle for 4 days, then happened again on 9/29/13 and it had been raining. then, drove the next day 9/30/13, again threw the wrench symbol after going to 1 rpm and 2 to 5 miles per hour and bucking, could not accelerate at all. it was dry on this day. again, put my flashers on this time was going 30 mph on a narrow two lane road. remember the service engine light never came on, but they were able to find a code this time. they said it was the throttle body, so i began asking more questions as to why ford has not recalled this since so many across the usa are having issues. no one knows, so as a consumer on a tight budget --like many of us these days....gets to figure out all the money pieces. i guess i will need a third job just for vehicle repairs on a two year old vehicle. this was a very scary experience and ford needs to do something about this before anyone else is seriously injured or killed. this problem should not be happening with a two year old maintained vehicle. now because it is over the 36,000 miles more money out of pocket....geez. *tr

I was backing out of a parking place. the engine began to cut out. pressing on the accelerator had no effect. even though the engine was still on, the car would not move forward. i was able to get back into the parking space and turned the car off. in a few minutes, i tried to start it again and it started right up. i was very low on gas at the time so i assumed that was the problem. i filled up with gas and it ran okay for another 5 days. on 9/18, i was driving down a 4-lane street and it suddenly began to slow down and would not respond to acceleration. i was able to coast to the side of the road. cut it off, restarted it and was able to drive back to my office parking lot. i had the car towed to the dealership and they replaced the throttle body which made all the difference in the way the car drives. i realized this problem had been affecting the performance of the car for awhile before it finally got bad enough to get my attention.

While driving on the interstate to work, my 2011 ford just stopped on me without any warning. thank god i was in the right lane, because i was able to maneuver my way into the emergency lane, and out of danger. had i been in a middle lane, i probably wouldn't be making a complaint right now. it was really a scary feeling. after getting my composure back, i noticed that the throttle control/powertrain light was on, and when i started the car back up, the light went off. *tr

Vehicle lost power. would only idle. wrench light illuminated. had to shut vehicle off and restart. *tr

First time, driving vehicle no faster than 40mph when it suddenly stops working, wrench light on dash appears. no power to vehicle. coast to pull over, restart vehicle. happened on freeway two days later. driving about 65mph, car stops working, all power lost. wrench light appears. coast to pull over, restart vehicle. no codes appear to be listed in vehicle "brain" that ford was able to retrieve. dealer unable to replicate issue. have seen many others having very same issue. ford unable to fix. *tr

Driving along and car quit running, no gas, no power. had to pull over, waited 5 min and started engine and was able to get home safely. car ran rough for a while afterward. the throttle body was defective and not covered under the extended warranty. *tr

I was driving on the interstate at 65 mph when my 2011 ford escape began to decelerate rapidly. i tried giving it gas but even with the gas petal pushed down all the way it still wouldn't accelerate at all. i had to pull over in the emergency lane so i wasn't hit by the car behind me. when i came to a stop the vehicle was shaking and i noticed that a flashing wrench light was displayed. i turned the vehicle off for a minute and then restarted it with no problems. i called the dealership because it's still under warranty and they told me to bring it in and they would take a look at it. *jb

Upon entering a busy highway off of my neighborhood the vehicle lost acceleration power and went into a complete slow crawl as if coasting, almost causing me to get rear ended by 60 mph approaching traffic. fortunately, i was able to barley coast to the shoulder before anyone could hit me. i turned off the vehicle until my husband arrived to bail me out. he then was able to restart the vehicle and managed to drive it to the nearest ford dealership and left it there overnight. upon diagnosing the vehicle with a dtc of p2111, they informed us that they ordered a replacement throttle body which would take approximately 3-4 weeks to obtain since they're on back order, leaving us without a reliable vehicle till the repair can be completed. *jb

I was driving 35-40 mph when all of the sudden my car started to slow down. i did not know what was happening at the time and i kept pressing the gas pedal but the car continued to slow. before the car stopped, i pulled over to the side of the road, placed the car in park, turned it off, and opened my car door. then i turned my car on again and was able to drive to the place i was going in about 7 min. i stayed at that place for around 30 min and then got in my car again where 2 min after i started driving, the car stalled again. i pulled over, turned the car off, and opened the driver's door. then i turned the car back on and preceded to drive home (about a ten minute car ride).

On 08/30/2013, my wife and i drove our 2011 ford escape which has the mileage of 38000 back home from a state park. when we were attempting accelerate the vehicle after a right turn from a stop light, the gas pedal suddenly stop working properly and would not accelerate, the wrench light was on. we stopped the car and restarted, it worked fine. without thinking much about it, we drove on i-10 highway and luckily we get home safe. but it happened again on 09/01/2013 and 09/02/2013, respectively. this is definitely a safety issues which ford company should resolve and i can't believed i drove it on highway with such hidden danger!!!

At 55 mph our 2011 ford escape lost all power with no warning at all. had to push it out of the middle of the highway. throttle control/powertrain light came on. turned ignition completely off and restarted the engine, light went out and ran fine. going in for service asap. *jb

My first incident occurred on friday, august 30, 2013. i lost power and acceleration with absolutely no warning at all. i observed that the wrench light was on and noticed that the car was shuddering. i turned the ignition all the way off and sat for a minute and turned the car back on. it started fine and i immediately took the car to a mechanic nearby. i left the car for 4 days while out of town and the mechanic informed me upon my return that they were unable to diagnose the problem or repeat the problem, so i retrieved my car hoping that it was just a one time incident. the same occurrence happened twice more on september 6, 2013; this time in rush hour traffic and it was in very hazardous and unsafe conditions. i was able to coast to the side of the road and turn the car off without further incident. i'm surprised that ford has not already issued a recall on this particular problem. someone could get hurt and this vehicle is very unsafe with this potential power train problem. i took it upon myself to do some research and i see complaints on other ford models and the escape as far back as 2008. shame on ford. i will be taking the car to a ford service dealer on monday, august 9, 2013. i love the escape (this is my second one) and have purchased nothing but ford products. i will seriously consider another make for my next vehicle purchase. ford should absolutely do the right thing and issue a recall.

My wife and i were travelling on an interstate highway approximately 3 hours from our home. with no notice, our vehicle lost power and a dashboard light illuminated which was the powertrain fault detection warning light. i pulled the vehicle over to the side of the interstate and turned the engine off. the vehicle re-started with no warning detection light and the vehicle running properly. after about 50 miles of additional driving, the vehicle repeated the same issue. after pulling the vehicle over to the emergency lane of the interstate and shutting the engine off, the engine re-started again with no light illuminated except a service engine light. i drove it to the nearest exit and fortunately found a ford dealer. the dealer replaced the throttle body of my vehicle and told me the throttle was sticking open and this was causing the vehicle's computer to shut down the power. when travelling on an interstate, i found this problem to be very dangerous. fortunately, i did not have an accident due to this problem.

On august 29, 2013 driver of a 2011 ford escape was attempting to turn left and accelerate the vehicle from a stoplight when the car jerked forward and would not accelerate or go with flow of traffic, and with traffic moving behind the vehicle creating dangerous situation. the dashboard showed a wrench light, and driver found it hard to move car forward as it went into "limp home" mode, sputtering all the way. the car was finally moved to the side of the road, shut off, and restarted, and driven the 3 miles home. owner will take car to the dealership (carmax). driver assumes will find throttle body code. the part and service should be covered under extended warranty. however, driver/owner will be out of pocket for deductible $250. family was in car and this is definitely a safety concern on this vehicle. when it goes into limp mode there is no warning and may cause an accident when the vehicle suddenly decelerates to snail speed. i believe ford must recall the faulty throttle body in the 2009-2011 models as they are safety issues for drivers in the car and other drivers on the road. *tt

I was traveling on interstate at 65-70 mph, when my escape's rpm's all of a sudden dropped to 1 and would not react to the gas pedal, luckily i was in the slow lane and managed to coast off the interstate. there was an 18-wheeler behind me and i started to panic at the speed he was gaining on me. i finally managed to get my hazards on to notify him that i was having issues. if i had not have been in the slow lane i would not have been able to get off the interstate before the car stopped completely. this is very dangerous, if i had been in the far left lane or the middle lanes the car could have stopped in the middle of the interstate. i took the vehicle to the ford store and they informed me that it was the throttle body. i then googled the problem and found out that this is a real issue with a large majority of the vehicles not just a limited faulty part. i don't understand how ford cannot see that this is a safety issue if someone goes to make a left turn and this happens another car could crash into them. anytime your car does not react properly it becomes a safety issue. when an 18-wheeler is behind a vehicle that responds the way mine did today it is a safety issue. as you know a fully loaded tractor trailer cannot stop as easily as a passenger vehicle and if the vehicle in front of them all of a sudden looses power and cannot get out of their way there is going to be an accident. once i got stopped my car did restart but getting to that point was very scary.

Wednesday august 28, 2013-i was going down my street headed to work-i had just pulled out of the driveway. maybe going 15-20 miles per hour. then the escape jolted forward like it was going to stall and shut off. it did not start back up right away like it is supposed to. thursday august 29, 2013-jolted, stalled, and shut off 3 different times today. one of those times, the vehicle was on the highway and a semi truck was coming up behind me and almost hit me! very scary!!! unsafe!! as i have been researching this problem, i have noticed that this is a common problem with this make, model, and year. is it going to take someone losing their life for someone to do something about this problem?! ford needs to step up and right their wrong and quit ignoring it.

Operator was traveling on 4 lane highway using the far left lane. vehicle suddenly and without warning lost all power and would not respond to accelerator pedal. operator had to pull over to far left with traffic behind nearly crashing into vehicle. "wrench" symbol appeared briefly on dash display. operator turned vehicle ignition off and then on. vehicle ran normally for 10 or so miles, then went into fault condition again while traveling over 40 mph. vehicle was returned to dealership for service and diagnosed with faulty throttle body. repaired at owners expense for $514.00. ford customer service would not repair vehicle or offer any assistance under powertrain warranty claiming that this condition was not covered. this is clearly a safety issue that has resulted in numerous complaints by owners of ford escape vehicles, as well as several reported accidents to include personal injury. ford is and has been aware of this faulty part and has done nothing to correct it or respond to it's customers complaints. nhtsa should force an immediate recall before someone is seriously hurt or killed due to this defective part. *js

Was at the stop light, light turns green press the gas pedal car did not move i was almost rear ended by another vehicle. wrench light was on dash board car start to putter would not accelerate. coasted out of the middle of the street and then the transmission light was on dash board, had to get car towed home. found out it was the throttle body and it is a defect from the manufacturer, but ford will not replace the consumer is responsible for replacing and it has an out of pocket fee of $548.00 to get the problem fixed.this is very dangerous, i was lucky i am afraid to drive the truck do not want this to happen to me again. ford should at least try and come up with some type of solution to this problem. *tr

While driving on the interstate @ 70 mph, i experienced a sudden loss of acceleration with a lack of throttle response and the illumination of a solid orange "wrench" symbol on the dash display. i was able to maneuver the vehicle to the break down lane and activate the emergency flashers. the vehicle was still running @ idle but still would not allow throttle response. i decided to shut off the engine since i was already stranded. upon doing so, i restarted the vehicle and it performed the self-checks and seemed to be operating normally, so i resumed my journey. this occurred 7 more times within the remaining 40 miles i drove it (i was attempting to "nurse" the vehicle to my home, which was accomplished). during the last occurrence, i observed a solid yellow "engine" symbol in addition to the previously described "wrench" symbol. this is obviously an extremely dangerous issue which appears to be a wide spread problem and ford motor co. should stand up and take responsibility if it wishes to build it's repeat customer base and avoid responsibility for injuries or deaths. *tr

I was driving down the interstate at 65 mph and my escape just started decreasing in speed, and i tried to accelerate and it would not gain any speed at all. i tried to make it to the next exit, but that did not happen because the power was continuing to decrease. i was glad i was already in the far right lane and could pull over to avoid an accident! once i pulled over the wrench light came on and the truck started to shake, i turned it off and let it sit for 15 min, it restarted and i had to have someone follow me to get home because it kept shutting off. i took it to the dealership only to find out it's not covered under warranty! hopefully ford will find a solution to this problem and get it corrected asap! *tr

Stalling and surging without warning while i was in heavy traffic. warning light came on looked like a wrench. this happened three times was able to get into parking lot and had car towed to ford dealer for repair. dealer indicated was throttle auto body problem and parts will not be in for 10 days due to a national back order on the same part (s). i have taken great care of this car and was livid it could have such a serious problem at age 2 and 65,000 miles, obvious wide spread problem with same make/model throughout the nation due to national back order. my complaint is the dangerous position the stalling put me in during heavy traffic, due to national back order i must rent car to get to work at a cost of $300 and the resistance of ford to step up to the plate and do a recall. i am sure someone has been harmed by this fault and ford must rectify the problem, i was lucky.

at first, while driving, the car would shut down and not respond to throttle movement, a huge safety issue in traffic. after pulling over and restarting the car, the problem seemed to go away for a while. the problem seemed to be intermittent the first few times. finally the car shut down to an idle and would not respond to throttle movement and the wrench and engine lights came on. the car would only run limp mode. the odb codes read a p2111 and p2112 (throttle actuator control stuck open, and throttle actuator stuck closed) respectively. we had to tow the vehicle to the dealer. we were told that the entire throttle body had to be replaced at a cost of $666. the problem is that the part is unavailable for 2 weeks and maybe up to a month. we have 39000 miles on the vehicle, the warranty ran out at 36000. this issue is also not covered under the power train warranty. this seems to be a widespread issue and i am disappointed that ford is unwilling to make this right and produce a recall. *tr

On august 21, 2013 driver of a 2011 ford escape was attempting to turn and accelerate the vehicle from a stoplight when the car jerked forward and would not accelerate with oncoming traffic, and with traffic moving behind the vehicle. the dashboard showed a wrench light, and drive found it hard to stop car as it was sputtering and jerking forward. the car was finally moved to the side of the road, shut off, and restarted, and drive the 10 miles home. owner took car to the dealership where throttle body code was discovered. this part is not covered under powertrain warranty, thus owner fix cost is $600.00. this is a safety concern on the vehicle, when it goes into safe mode there is no warning and can cause an accident when the vehicle suddenly decelerates to under 1000 rpm. i believe ford should recall the faulty throttle body in the 2009-2011 models as they are safety issues for drivers in the car and other drivers on the road. *tr

My ford would not accelerate, it sputtered and went dead. it would not restart. it had done this before but previously i could restart it. dealership replaced throttle body. *tr

While driving at interstate speeds (65 mph), the vehicle just seemed to stop, but the engine was still running. i had just gone over a bridge and was able to coast down and pull off the side of the road. a yellow wrench was displayed in the instrument panel. i turned the vehicle off and removed the key. after waiting for a minute, i was able to start the vehicle and return home. this has happened three times now. i called the dealership who informed me that this was not covered by warranty and they have had several repairs related to this. so much that the technician knew the part number by heart and was able to provide a quote without doing any paperwork or even looking at the vehicle. i live on the coast where there are several bridges and tunnels. had i chose to drive through the tunnel instead of taking the bridge, i have no doubt that this issue would have caused a very bad accident. there needs to be a recall on this and ford needs to step up and fix the problem instead of making a killing off the unsuspecting consumer at the sum of over $400 a pop. *tr

Was driving along to my firefighter job when i felt my car loose power and noticed a wrench light come up on my dash. i attempted to accelerate however couldn't. i safely was able to pull off to side of the road where once i came to a stop the car jerked. i shut down my engine, waited a few mins then restarted the car to which car was running fine. i continued to work and started to research what problem can be and noticed many people have had same issue. *tr

On four separate occasions, while accelerating the throttle gave out. the vehicle had no power to move forward, except what was left from the original speed. on one of theses occasions, i was on a major highway in the dc area when the throttle gave out. i turned on my hazards and pulled over. thankfully the cars behind me had enough room not to crash into me. i then turned off the car. once restarted, it seemed to stall a bit and then drove normally until the next incident. there have been 4 incidents within 5 days, all seeming to happen at random. the "wrench" flashes once the throttle goes out, but then doesn't appear once the car is back on and everything seems normal. ford has given me problems, saying this falls outside my warranty and i may have to pay for the repair myself. they also wont see me for a week, when this merits immediate attention. i just bought this vehicle in march 2013, after this problem had already been reported by thousands of existing owners. had i know about this problem, i would not have purchased this vehicle because it is so unsafe. *tr

Throttle control failed driving on interstate. we could have been killed. same thing happened two weeks prior and dealer claimed it was fixed. *tr

After only owning the vehicle for 2 weeks (purchased used) vehicle began to stall/loose power, and immediately slows. it does start back up, but then repeats the behavior. *tr

Engine suddenly reduces to high idle - throttle totally unresponsive. turning engine off and restarting temporarily restores performance. i endorse the ongoing nhtsa investigation of this well known problem which is a severe safety threat as the vehicle unpredictably looses all power in the middle of other traffic. *tr

While driving my 2011 ford escape suddenly lost all power (almost felt like a stall) and the wrench light on the dash was illuminated. i pulled to the side of the road, turned it off, and after turning the vehicle back on it operated as normal. this has happened three times over the past week. *tr

I was accelerating and the car then just stopped accelerating. it felt like the transmission had just let go, because the car would not speed up when i stepped on the gas pedal. when i tried to stop, the idle was very rough and the car wanted to jerk forward. luckily, i was able to get the car stopped in a safe place. when i re-started the car, the ignition was turning over, but it took several seconds before it fired. i have since brought my car to the service shop, they told me it was a defective throttle body. they said that they have had to repair this on a number of occasions. the gentleman sitting next to me says that he had the same issue with a similar vehicle - same family of car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. while driving 25 mph and making a right turn, the vehicle slowed down without warning. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing, but was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 45,000. updated 7/16/15*cn the consumer stated no accidents occurred but, there were a few near misses due to loss of speed. the failure occurred every time the vehicle was driven. updated 9/22/2015 *js

While driving on an expressway around 35-40mph, vehicle experienced a sudden loss of power and went into limp mode (less than 1000rpm) with a wrench indicator illuminated on the dashboard. pulled over, shut down vehicle and then restarted engine. vehicle was driven home and taken to the dealership the next day. ford diagnosed and is replacing the throttle body under powertrain warranty. *tr

Vehicle shuts down or does not respond to accelerator. you turn it off wait a few minutes, start it again and it gets moving. problem occurred twice in one day. 10 days later the problem re-emerged three times.

I was driving my 2011 ford escape on a crowded i-4 around orlando florida when i completely lost power on my vehicle. i was able to safely pull off to the side of the road. as i brought the car to a stop (braking), the car jerked forward before stopping. i shut off the car, and sat for a few moments, wondering what to do. the dash showed a wrench symbol, so i checked the manual to see what it meant. it said something about a fault and the powertrain. i checked to see if the car would restart and it did. i continued to drive, and approximately 10-15 minutes later it did it again. this time the check engine light came on as well. i made it to my destination and called my husband. he checked the internet to see if anyone else had this problem and was shocked to see all the complaints about this. thankfully, he read that if i stayed under 60 mph and didn't drive too long it shouldn't happen again. i took the back way home and although it was much longer i made it without a further problem. why is this problem part(throttle valve) not recalled. and most importantly, and for safety reasons why aren't the owners of these 2011 escape's made immediately aware of this hazard. this was the closest i came to a fatal accident and not necessarily my own. *tr

While driving my 2011 ford escape to work when all of the sudden it lost power. my first thought was that the engine had died, but when i looked down i saw that it was still bouncing between 500 and 1000 rpm. i also noticed that the red wrench light had come on. i was able to get the car pulled over into a parking lot. i was not sure what was going on so i shut the car off. a minute or two later i started the car and it started right up. i then continued on to work but after exciting the freeway i stopped at a red light when i went to accelerate from the light the car did the same thing. i was able to pull over and did the same as before. i made it to work with no further issues this time the check engine light came on and stayed on. that afternoon i took the car to the dealership to have it looked at and they asked me to bring it by the next morning. i drove the car home from there with no incident. the next morning i took the escape back to the dealership after waiting for about three hours the told me that there was a problem with the throttle body. i proceeded to drive the car home and i ended up having the same issue with the care going into what i guess the call safe mode. i was as before able to shut the car down and start it back up again. this happen going across a two lane bridge in traffic luckily the car behind me was far enough behind me that the did not run into me but came real close. *tr

Was driving on highway at 55 mph, the wrench light came on dashboard and the car started decelerating. would not accelerate, had to pull over, turn car off, then back on, in order for car to accelerate again. second incident seemed like car's power completely shut off and would not come back on again after a rough idling stop. *tr

Transmission slips twice and jerks forward when first driven cold.........very dangerous when entering a busy highway................took to palm springs motors 3 times and the problems was never solved...........they told me that they could not solve the problem and to drive it until it breaks down and then they could tell what the problem is................this is unacceptable and needs to be taken care by ford asap................ *tr

Throttle body stops to only idle upon accelerating or use of throttle from stop. sometimes it will allow to accelerate up to 30 to 40 mph before it quits working upon throttle input from driver. so, it will only idle after accelerating half or part way through an intersection and you are at the mercy of incline or decline of road to hopefully coast to safety. it has done this while turning left while having to yield to oncoming traffic. it caused oncoming traffic to have to stop while i got stranded in middle of turn. safety issue for sure. *tr

While driving on the interstate on afternoon 31jul13, traveling approximately 60 mph with foot on the accelerator when the car began to completely decelerate. rpm went to zero and with foot on the gas pedal no acceleration was possible. was able to get to the side of the road with emergency blinker lights on. turned car off. when restarting car, car had issues restarting. drove for another 7 miles with no warning light or issue. the next morning, 1aug13, while traveling on interstate at about 60mph again, after about 20 min of interstate driving the exact same thing happened again. was able to then drive slowly to the dealership. dealership indicated it was a faulty throttle valve that has been very common with these models. *tr

Driving on major interstate in downtown houston at rush hour doing 65 mile an hour when car suddenly stalled causing me to come to almost a complete crawl and i kept seeing a flashing wrench in my dash area as the car tugged roughly when i attempted to accelerate. my car was almost hit by several cars as others slammed on brakes behind. i was in the middle of a 5 lane highway and i had to cross two lanes doing 10 miles per hour to get over to the right. i was a very scary ordeal, i was shook up and disoriented by the ordeal. i turned the car off and sat on the median for 10 mins and started the car back up and the flashing wrench was gone. i called ford about a similar incident that i had last fall of 2012 and they assured me that there were no issues reported like this for the vehicle. please research the fact that my vin is stated as invalid. my vin is [xxx]. i gave this # to the ford company when i called last year and now it's showing as invalid?? the bigger issue is that i feel that my car is unsafe after this happening again today and knowing that i nearly caused several accidents on the interstate and put my own life in danger is causing me to reach out see what actions i can take against ford to fix this issue. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I was driving at a speed of 45 mpg and my escape sounded like it went into neutral, i tried to give it gas and it wouldn't move, i pulled over and it was just running but still would not move, the wrench came up on the dash lights so i looked in the owners manual and it said it was throttle control/powertrain , i had to get it towed to my dealership. *tr

I was about two blocks from home, driving the suv and slowed down to turn the corner, when i tried to hit the gas to accelerate, the car wouldn't accelerate past 5mph. the wrench icon came on, and the rpm wouldn't go past 1. when i restarted it, it worked fine. i had the car towed to the dealership. this is the second time that this has happened. my car is only 2 years old. the first incident was when it was 6 months old. *tr
