Driving on interstate at approximately 60 mph, engine suddenly lost power. i looked down and saw the yellow wrench light on. car continued to coast and began slowing down. luckily there were no vehicles immediately behind me and i had time to find a location to pull over. pulled over and engine began to buck and sputter. turned off ignition. waited about 15 seconds and started engine. wrench light was gone. put car in gear and everything appeared fine. completed approximately 15 miles and got to destination. this is the second time this has happened in two and a half weeks. first incident was on 5/31/13. after first incident i did some research on the internet and learned about other similar incidents caused by the throttle body. i went to the ford dealer and ordered a new part. dealer took the order and denied knowing anything about this issue but ordered the part for me. the part still has not come in. after repeated phone calls i was told the part is on national back order and might still take a few weeks to get in. *tr
Driving in town and vehicle would not accelerate. turned off engine and restarted. vehicle ran fine for only a few blocks and had to restart again. next day the vehicle would only go about 1 block before we had to restart it. it needs a new electronic throttle body and no parts are available. there is a national backorder per ford parts department. *tr
While driving our escape, you try to accelerate and there is nothing there. you can push the gas pedal to the floor and the engine does not respond. this has happened 4 times in about 6 day period. we have had to pull our vehicle to side of the road/highway and shut it off and then restart it. it does starts working again but we don't know when it will happen again. we took it to harrold zeiglers in kalamazoo michigan, and they told us it was a electronic throttle body and there was 8013 of them on back order and no eta on when they will be in. i called ford customer service and they told me the same story.[xxx], and [xxx] were the first to agents i spoke with. i told them that their answers were not good enough and i wanted to speak to their manager. he called me back 2 hours later(terry badge#62889) and he told me they were already aware of this issue and they could not help me because i had too many miles on my escape(75000) which i told him i wanted to speak to his supervisor. he told me his boss would give me the same answer. i asked him if the national highway safety commission was aware of this issue and he said they were and that my issue and conversation would also be reported. i am not sure why there is not a recall for this issue as there are currently 8013 on back order. i wonder how many have already been replaced. this issue could cause a serious accident for someone else or my wife as she is the driver of our escape. we are currently without a vehicle to drive because of this. thank you for your time. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
I had a problem with acceleration where the escape would cough and buck when trying to accelerate. at that time ( a couple of weeks after purchase), i took it back to the dealer and they sent it for a "software update". it didn't buck continually after that, but was still gutless and slow. yesterday 8/2/2013, i was at a stop light and tried to accelerate and the car just wouldn't go. engine still running, but no power to propel forward. "wrench" light came on dash and i coasted to repair garage at corner. i restarted engine and light went away. garage employees recommended i keep driving to see if light comes back on. i continued on my way and was turning right and as i made the turn, the escape completely lost power. thankfully i had a shoulder to coast on to or i would have been hit by oncoming traffic. this time, "wrench" light and "engine" light came on. i had to be towed to a ford dealership and the repair was made there. the diagnosis and correction was for a throttle body. from my repair slip it says "10foz retrieved codes p2111/p2112 - faulty after researching the problem online, i see it has been an issue with others. mine was fixed under the warranty. i am reporting the problem just in case you are keeping records of how many ford escapes have had this problem. *tr
Vehicle (2010 ford escape) traveling at appx. 20mph on freeway when it started bucking, lost some but not all power. pulled vehicle to side of freeway, shut off engine. restarted 30 seconds later. restart was difficult but successful. successfully drove vehicle to dealer for repair. dealer claims this is electronic throttle body issue. cannot repair until part arrives in approximately one week. very similar behavior from car in two separate incidents last week - both happened immediately upon start up in my driveway. i shut engine off each time and restarted. restart was difficult but not successful. similar incident 9 months ago (sept. 2012). vehicle traveling at appx. 65mph on freeway when it noticeably jumped, immediately lost most but not all power. towed to dealership. dealer could not repeat nor verify concern in 4 days / 150 miles of testing. research has shown that nhtsa is investigating similar issues on this and other model year ford escapes. my experience sounds very similar to complaints from other drivers. *tr
Driving around 65mph and the car suddenly shuts off and the check engine light came on, loss of all power all i could do was try to make my way from the fast lane over to the shoulder, drifted to the side of the road and turned the car off and it restarted after a few minutes and drove fine all the way home, a few days later it did the same thing, cut off while doing around 60mph again in the fast lane i had to try and get over through 4 lanes of traffic with cars blowing by me at over 80mph to get to the shoulder, this is going to get someone killed. i called ford and they know of the issue, seems the issue is so bad the part thats the cause of the problem (the throttle body) is on back order, you have been investigating since feb. why has this not been recalled yet? *tr
I was driving on the interstate at about 70 mph. suddenly, without notice the car began to slow down and depressing accelerated did nothing. i was able to coast to the shoulder where the car continued to idle roughly with the wrench indicator light on. i turned the ignition off and waited a few seconds. i started the car and engine ran somewhat normally. same issue occurred on return trip a few hours later. took to ford dealer who diagnosed as needed the throttle body replaced. said the part was on back order and would probably take 4 weeks to get it. this issue could result in very serious injury if it occurs in heavy traffic conditions. *tr
Made turn into traffic, speed was about 30 mph. went to accelerate, no power. engine rpms dropped. stepped on gas pedal to accelerate . no response. drifted over to side of road. placed into neutral and tried to increase rpms. no response. turned off ignition to call for aid as the roadway was busy, then tried to restart car . car started normally. rpms resumed normal. placed car into drive and drove off normally. happened again on three different occasions. happened the other night three times. deemed the car unsafe to drive. waiting for an appointment to get repaired. on line forums indicate there is a problem with the throttle, whether it be a sensor or communication with the on board computed. *tr
For a couple weeks previous to the final incident, while coming to a stop, the car would stutter then turn off...one time while driving 80mph on the highway. the final time i was pulling out of a gas station and the car started stuttering, then shut off in the middle of the intersection with just enough power to get to a turn-off. the check engine light came on and the yellow wrench. the car would not start for approximately 45 min. i was able to make it around the corner from the ford dealership and pushed it the remaining way. ford is saying it is a throttle body issue and the part is on an emergency nationwide backorder which may take 3 weeks to 6 months to get the part...and it's not covered under warranty because it is considered 'normal wear and tear,' according to ford. i am about to make my fourth, yes, fourth payment on the escape. *tr
We where traveling northbound on i675 traveling at 70 mph when the vehicle started to lose speed went into limp mold. *tr
Driving on i-95 north....at 60 mph....when the engine almost completely stalled out without warning. the car speed dropped down to 5-7mph...and the car started shaking and the engine began rough surging. i barely missed being hit by a large semi truck as i inched the car over to the curb. i was able to get the car off the expressway (going about 5 mph) at the next exit and then turned the car off. the wrench light also appeared. i turned the car off .i called my husband, who told me to see if i could restart the car after 15 minutes. it started back up and i was able to drive home. the car worked okay for 3 more weeks and then the same thing happened to me again .....and almost caused an accident again. i was able to get the car home, i have parked the car and will no longer use it. *tr
While driving 70 mph down interstate my 2010 escape suddenly lost all power without warning. the wrench light on the dash came on, the gas pedal was non-responsive and the engine idled extremely rough at a low rpm. luckily i was able to get to the side of the road - nearly caused an accident. unsure what to do i looked in the manual and saw that the wrench light meant powertrain failure and it advised to contact dealer. i had shut the car off, but decided to try and move it farther off the road so i started it again. the light was no longer on and the engine was running smoothly. i decided to attempt to get closer to home and drove about 5 miles before it happened again. i was in the right hand lane, so i was able to pull right off the road. this incident happened two more time during a 20 mile trip. this is an extremely dangerous issue. i could have caused a horrible accident tonight and there is no warning that this is going to happen. by the sound of it the throttle body is on national backorder. i hope ford steps up and takes care of this huge safety hazard. *tr
During highway driving at approximately 40 mph the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration, stalling, and the throttle/power train indicator light came on. i was forced to pull over on the side on the road, turn off the vehicle and restart. the care drove for approximately 3 more miles and then the issue recurred. i immediately proceeded to my local dealership (dealership where vehicle was purchased). during that trip, the "check engine" light came on. i was advised by the service technician that this was due to a faulty/failed throttle body but that the parts were on back order indefinitely with no word from ford as to when they would be available. i was advised to continue to drive the vehicle in its current state until such time as the part was available. *tr
I was traveling at highway speed, 60 mph, when the engine suddenly lost power and i had to coast to the side of the road. the warning indicating a problem with the throttle control/powertrain came on. i turned the motor off and restarted the engine, the light went off, and i proceeded to work without further incident. after researching on the internet and talking to my dealer, i was told it was a defective throttle body part and is on "national back order" and will be at least 2 weeks before they can get the part in. on the same day, on the drive from home from work, the exact same problem happened, but this time at about 35 mph in traffic. fortunately no one was right on my bumper at the time. there is absolutely no warning when this happens, it just suddenly loses power. *tr
My car stalled out as i was driving down the street. i had to turn off my car and restart it. it was able to restart but about 5 minutes later it did the same thing. at one point i was in the middle of an intersection. when i took it in to the dealership they told me this was happening to many other ford escapes as well as ford fusions. at this point they told me the part was back ordered for 2-3 weeks. they told me most people were just able to drive the car with the random stalling out until the parts came in. *tr
Wife was driving home and her vehicle stalled. she was able to get out of traffic and into a parking lot, where she had her car towed to the nearest dealer. dealer told her the issue was with the throttle body. *tr
I was cruising at highway speeds when the car began slowing despite no change in gas pedal pressure. additional gas did not result in the car maintaining speed or speeding up. i coasted to the side of the highway and turned the car off. i restarted the car and was able to accelerate to highway speeds. about a mile later, the same thing happened. i called a tow truck and the car was taken to a local ford dealer. the mechanic informed me that the problem is a bad throttle body and that a number of fords have the problem but there is no recall. it is such a problem that a replacement part is on back-ordered and the dealer is unable to tell me when it will be in so that the car can be made safe to operate. the potential safety issue of a failure while driving, and the widespread nature of the problem suggest ford should be more proactively addressing this and recalling cars like mine before incidents arise while operating the vehicle. *tr
Driving along highway at 55 mph. suddenly, could no longer accelerate, despite engine still running at rough idle. had to drift to side of road. had no throttle response. to continue, we had to shut down engine. we restarted the engine, and proceeded down the highway. the symptom repeated itself several times while driving to the car dealer. we took it there because we feared for our safety. our vehicle has been on a waiting list for a replacement part for over a week. this malfunction should be treated as an urgent situation, and a recall should be mandatory. someone is going to get seriously injured. *tr
The auto "jumped" then decelerated immediately. i had to move from middle lane to right then off the road with only coasting-no fuel power at all. *tr
While making left hand turn vehicle abruptly stalled, yellow warning light showed fault with powertrain. vehicle was towed to dealer on 6/10/2013 still waiting for throttle body assembly three days. *tr
Wrench light came on while driving car and barely had enough rpms to get off road. had to pull battery cable off to get car to move. this happened three times to get the car 20 miles to home then trailered to ford dealer. said it was a bad tb. the car has also stalled at 0mph and sometimes surges. one time this winter the car surged causing it to hit my tractor and busted bumper cover and fog lamp. *tr
I was driving from the bank to home and all of the sudden i had no power. i stepped on the gas and nothing happened. i had to ease over to the right lane with no power and when i got to the side of the road i shut off the engine and then i restarted it. my escape then ran fine the rest of the way home. i called the dealership and brought my escape into the service department. they said i need a new throttle box and that they are on back order. my car is only 3 years old. i bought it brand new. there is no reason for something like this to happen. since the part is on back order i have to drive it like this until the part is available. the dealership told me it will be at least 1 week, probably longer. if my car dies in an intersection or while crossing an intersection, or on a freeway, i could have an accident. this is very frightening. i have to drive it, it's the only car i own. i avoided the freeway to and from the dealership because i know the side roads to get there. i won't be able to do that all the time. please recall this part. considering the part is on back order and they have no idea how long it will take to get a new one that tells me i am not the only one having this problem. this is a safety concern for all. if a car stalls in the middle of rush hour traffic on the freeway it is endangering many lives besides mine. *tr
While traveling on a state highway the vehicle suddenly lost power although it was still running. the powertrain light came on. we limped off the highway. after turning the vehicle off and turning it back on, the vehicle was able to run again. the light goes off and stays off until the next incident. the incidents happen very frequently now, and because of this, we are unable to use our vehicle at all. this has happened with me right in the middle of an intersection. we had a code run and have been told it is the throttle body, which is apparently a common problem. we have been unable to obtain the part to repair it so far. *tr
While driving on the interstate in morning rush hour traffic, the vehicle suddenly lost power and throttle control (went into limp mode). i had to move over to the emergency without power and stop the vehicle. after turning the vehicle off for a few minutes, it started and ran ok. then on 10 june, the same issues occurred again at highway speeds but in little traffic. again on 14 june it happened 3 times within driving 10 miles again on the interstate at highway speed and in afternoon rush hour traffic. the third time an obd ii dtc was issued. upon arrival home i scanned the code and it was p2112 throttle body stuck closed. *tr
I was driving on the highway when the motor in the escape just died, i was forced to move from the left lane of the highway to the right with almost no power. no accident occurred i took the truck to the ford dealership and they say that part is on national backorder ford is making 4000 of the throttle bodies in order to keep with the demand. *tr
Engine lost power and coasted to side of road. towed to dealer, keyser miller ford, 8 east main st., collegeville, pa 19426. they stated the problem was the "throttle body", and it needed to be replaced. they said it was a common problem with the escapes. parts next to impossible to obtain. *tr
I was driving down the street and lost power. the throttle wasn't working properly. took the escape to ford where other similar vehicles have same problem with throttle body. i have been waiting on the part for over a week and ford says there is no recall or warranty for this although it's happening to so many people. i'm having to rent a car this whole time waiting. *tr
My vehicle is a 2010 ford escape 6 cyc with 4 wd. this was a new vehicle purchased in early 2010 as it had 4.7 miles on it when purchased and i put most of those miles on it during the test drive. when traveling at highway speed recently in heavy traffic the vehicle suddenly lost all ability to accelerate. it was as if there was no gas pedal in the vehicle at all. no shuddering, or chugging after this occurred and absolutely no warning at all before it occurred. it was extremely lucky that no one was injured as i attempted to make my way across 4 lanes of traffic to the shoulder. the vehicle never shut off when this occurred. i then turned the vehicle off, waited, and then restarted and it seemed to run fine. i took it to the ford dealership where it was purchased to assess the situation. i was told the battery was bad which they replaced. i questioned as to how a battery could cause this type of problem as i understand some of the vehicle mechanics and my research showed that it was more than likely a throttle body issue and i was assured that battery was most certainly the issue due to the complex nature of vehicles today and their on board computers. when the battery was replaced my wife picked up the vehicle and had just entered the interstate when at highway speed the same exact problem occurred where an accident was almost caused by her efforts to exit the road. again no warning. when it was restarted it was driven back to the dealership. today, it was confirmed by the ford dealership that in fact it was the throttle body issue that my research had show it to be, and more so, the part, which is somehow not a safety recalled item by the nhtsa, is on back-order by ford because of the shear number of these parts going bad and needing to be replaced in so many vehicles. i now own a vehicle that cannot be operated safely without a safety recall. *tr
No throttle response. *tr
While driving on highway 24, my vehicle had spontaneously lost power as i was pressing on the gas pedal. as i safety steered my vehicle to a place on the side of the highway, the service light then the check engine light came on. once stop, i turned the engine off; waited a few minutes they started it back up. the engine was on, the dash indicator lights were still one, but no power was transferring from the engine to the transmission as i pressed down on the gas pedal. the rpm gauge also showed little to no change while i was applying more gas. after i had the vehicle towed back to the ford dealership, they were quick to identify the problem being the throttle body. the part was covered under my warranty only after i paid the $100.00 deductible. my vehicle was well maintained; having all scheduled maintenance done by ford dealership/service centers within the required intervals, and has only 44,800 miles on it. *tr
Bought 2010 ford escape limited in december. purchased a $2000 extended bumper to bumper from easy care. put about 1200 miles on the vehicle before it started turning off at random. first time it happened was at an intersection where i lost throttle response totally and almost got t boned by a coal truck. it did it 5 more times as i was just trying to get it home. took it to freedom ford in ebensburg pa for warranty work and they found a faulty throttle body. the dealer and my warranty company refused to pay anything for the repair and the part is back ordered until july 16th. now i am paying almost $400 a month for a ford escape with only 31000 miles that i don't have. and it will be sitting at the dealer for 6 more weeks. *tr
Driving on highway, at 65 mph. car loses power and have to cost to a stop. very dangerous situations trying to cross 4 lanes of traffic to get to shoulder of highway and stop safely. this happened once on 4/26/13, took to dealership, they said nothing wrong. continued to drive until happened again. happened on 5/30 and 5/31 repeatedly until got the vehicle to a repair shop. repair shop has had the vehicle for 10 days due to part not available. part is not available because this is a recurring problem for ford and these vehicles. this is a very serious safety issue and needs to be recalled! please do something! *tr
Vehicle stalled several times while in the process of making turns. *tr
I was driving in traffic at 60 mph and the power went out. the car just coasted. steering continued to work. i pulled over to the median, put the car in park and restarted the car. the car started back up and worked fine after that. *tr
The vehicle lost power while driving at relatively constant speed. the engine hesitated, car did not accelerate when the gas pedal was applied. the engine then stalled. i pulled over, restarted the engine, and the car seem to run normally after this first incident. the vehicle has continued to intermittently have the same issue, although it may need to be restarted a few times before acting normal again. the vehicle was towed because it stalled and seem unable to make the drive home. the engine throttle was cleaned in august by a mechanic, but stalled repeatedly 3 days later. using dry gas and keeping the tank nearly full has not solved the issue either. my experience seems similar to many complaints found at this website and other places on the internet. *js
While driving in neighborhood at approx. 15mph, engine stalled and orange wrench light came on. pulled over to side of street, shut down engine and then restarted. engine ran fine for another 2 weeks and then same event occurred with wife driving. one week later, did same thing while i was driving. ford dealer has car now and says they are waiting for a throttle body. car has been in shop for over 1 week so far. *tr
Vehicle lost throttle response, would not accelerate. had no prior warning/symptoms. check engine light (wrench) came on. pulled off to side of road, had to shut of and restart. throttle response returned. same incident happened the next day at approximately same speed. pulled off road, shut off and restarted. brought vehicle to dealer/repair shop and they replaced the throttle body assembly. *tr
The vehicle started stalling while approaching a traffic light and continued to stall to where eventually the gas pedal was non-operational. the car was taken to a ford dealership and a mechanic diagnosed that the throttle body was not operating properly and needed to be replaced. ford staff indicated the part is not covered under the power train warranty and the replacement part would have to be paid out of pocket at the owner's expense. *tr
At the initial failure, while traveling on manchester road the vehicle stalled and i had to pull to the side of the road. a week later at the second failure while standing at a stop light the vehicle stalled and i had to restart the vehicle. *tr
Driving along down the driveway and the car went into slow mode. non-responsive to gas pedal, engine sputtering. happened to my wife earlier this week on the way to work. she pulled over, turned off the engine and restarted. drove fine then so she brought it home and switched cars. engine wrench light comes on but after restart disappears. hooked up to my obd scanner and it showed p2111 code. *tr
Driving on highway, heard a little pop and had sudden loss of power from depressed accelerator, but engine was on - no warning light on dash. was going on downward incline, able to go from left lane to shoulder on right; engine shook violently then and i turned it off. waited a minutes, turned back on; idling had a little "miss" but able to finish trip. upon return home, took vehicle to mechanic, found no historic code in computer and nothing found on test drive. on 6/07, again on highway and without warning, car again lost power from accelerator - immediate loss of momentum almost caused me to be broadsided by large suv merging from off ramp as i am trying to coast to the shoulder. same thing, engine shook, i turned it off; again no warning light. occurred two more times and we turned around for home. same thing happened two more times on the return trip - the yellow wrench warning light came on the last two times. very hazardous condition, i plan to not drive and take to the dealer as soon as i can. i see there is a known issue with the throttle body and feel a recall should be implemented, especially since the condition suddenly puts a driver in a very dangerous position and i will have to pay for a known design / device problem to be repaired. *tr
While driving in light traffic on the interstate freeway, just coming over a hill, the engine lost power. multiple power loss surges and the engine light came on so the ford escape was allow to coast down hill to the next exit ramp. once at the bottom of the off ramp, the ignition was turned off and a tow truck was called. to move the car out of the way, the engine was restarted and it was noticed that another light was also turned on indicating something mechanical (transmission) had also failed. the car was barely able to move in 1st gear to clear the side of the road till the tow truck arrived. later the mechanic read the trouble codes and said the throttle body failed and the transmission torque converter was seriously damaged. fortunately the traffic was not heavy and there was opportunity to exit the freeway without crashing. *tr
Going about 45 mph when all of a sudden the car started to coast, there was no warning light. i pushed the gas pedal to the floor and it was as though the car was not getting any fuel to the engine there was no acceleration. i coasted to a stop turned off the engine waited a few minutes turned the car on it seemed fine so i finished my errand. on the way home i was going approx. 50mph on the local highway and the same thing happened. took my car to a local ford dealer (i thought it was still under warranty) they said it would cost $900.00 to clean the throttle body as recommended by ford but they were not sure it would fix the problem. the throttle body part was on back order and they were not sure when they could get one. so now i have a car i am afraid to drive. *tr
In a 35 mph zone, when accelerating after slowing to allow vehicle in front to turn, throttle stuck open & car lost power. was able to get to side of road and restart car and proceed. same thing happened 4 additional times that day at various speeds accelerating to speed following a stop or using an on-ramp to highway speed. have experienced "surging" previously but dealer ignored reports as "intermittent". car was towed to dealer on 22 may and is still there awaiting a new throttle control body. shipment of new part is estimated as 17 june. dealer is not providing loaner or rental car as the part is not considered part of the powertrain & is therefore approx. 6 months out of warranty. since the car cannot "go" without the throttle control body - why is it considered part of the emission system vice the powertrain? with so many cars down for this part, it should be a recall. *tr
Engine just goes to idle. you have to stop and put car in park to restart. there is no warring as to when the engine will cut out. this has happened at least 12 to 15 time over the last two weeks. *tr
I was traveling 60mph, car suddenly stalled on the highway. gas paddle did not respond. engine light & wrench light was lit. stopped the vehicle completely & turn the engine off. waited couple of mins and start again. no wrench light but engine light goes off. now this happens every day. *tr
First it started with the engine light coming on. i had the codes read at a local auto parts store and they saw it was an "evap censor" and stated this is usually associated with a gas cap leaking. well, the escape we have doesn't have a gas cap!!! it's one of those "quick fuel, nascar type systems", where there is just a plug that retracts when you insert the gas nozzle and retracts when you're finished? secondly, the surging started happening while stopped at red lights. i would slide the gear into neutral, which would keep the vehicle from lunging, but you could still see the rpm's revving up and down. this issue went on for about two months. thirdly, it is now stalling while driving 50 - 60 mph down the highway. there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to when it happens, it just totally shuts down the engine!!! very dangerous. *tr
The vehicle acts like it is going to cut off, you can't give it any gas. i have to pull over, where i am at, whether it be the side of the road, middle of an intersection, or a center turning lane. i then have to put the vehicle in park, turn it off, wait about 15 seconds and start it back up. most of the time i have to repeat this process several times before i reach my destination. it is the throttle body which we have tried to order but have been told it is on back order and they (ford dealership) are not sure when they will get one in. this must be a huge problem in the u.s. because we have been told by ford dealer that they have already had to replace "a bunch". *tr
On multiple occasions my 2010 ford escape stalled while driving. vehicle was unresponsive when pressing on the gas pedal and required a restart in order to temporarily correct the issue. in all instances, i was in the middle of traffic and struggled to make my way to the shoulder to avoid an accident or injury to myself and others. upon further investigation from local ford dealer, i was informed that the throttle body was defective and causing the vehicle to stall. dealer stated that the throttle body was only covered under warranty through 36k miles. *tr
While driving at approx 45mph, vehicle started to decrease in speed. pressing the gas pedal the rpms continued to decrease and car slowed to a stop without stalling. vehicle began sputtering and "wrench" light appeared on dash. *tr
