Problems with 2010 Ford Escape ENGINE

On average, the 2010 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 57 045 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2010 Ford Escape

Driving approx 40mph when vehicle started stalling. rpm drops to approx 1000, gas pedal does not respond. happened multiple times in the past, taken to dealership but "no codes were found to suggest a defect." have to turn the car off and restart with it being in park before starts to run and wrench light turns off. drove to the dealer after that last incident on 6/21, code 2111 was found to be pending which would have been lost if i turned the car off, found it to be the electronic throttle body. for a car that is 3 years old and 40k miles, it is dangerous to have this defect as if it happens on the highway you are stuck with a chance for a semi-truck to rear end you. please allow this recall for the safety of others. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated while driving 55 mph the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was restarted and operated as designed for a few miles at which time the failure recurred. the failure recurred twelve times over the course of a month. a diagnostic test was scheduled with a dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 56,000.

On 6/18/13 driving on a 45 mph road slowed to make a turn and lost all power to by 2010 ford escape, also the wrench showed up on my dash. i turned it off and back on again and it ran fine. the next day took it to my local dealer in clarion, pa and they couldn't figure out what the problem was. on 7/1/13 i experienced the same problem, driving 45 mph when i experienced complete loss of power. this time the vehicle was sputtering, turned it off & back on but had to give it gas to start. the wrench showed up again. called the local dealer in clarion, pa and stated i had researched this on the internet & found 21 pages of other people experiencing the same exact problem with the majority having to have the throttle body changed. also found that nhtsa is investigating the complaints. i don't appreciate it when the dealership does not take the severity of this problem seriously. they stated they would order part but didn't know when it would come in. i called another local dealership & they said they could have the part in 3 days. what's up with that? really don't like driving this vehicle since you never know when it is going to occur. this is definitely a safety issue and feel it should be addressed by ford. do we need to have numerous people getting killed before something is done about it? *tr

Vehicle stalled several times. loses power with no acceleration when feeding gas. wrench indicator light comes on, indicates throttle body issue. vehicle needs to be restarted. took to the shop after 3 incidences. mechanics tell me the electronic throttle body has failed. parts on national back order due to high frequency of incidences. please issue a recall! *tr

Vehicle (2010 ford escape) traveling at appx. 20mph on freeway when it started bucking, lost some but not all power. pulled vehicle to side of freeway, shut off engine. restarted 30 seconds later. restart was difficult but successful. successfully drove vehicle to dealer for repair. dealer claims this is electronic throttle body issue. cannot repair until part arrives in approximately one week. very similar behavior from car in two separate incidents last week - both happened immediately upon start up in my driveway. i shut engine off each time and restarted. restart was difficult but not successful. similar incident 9 months ago (sept. 2012). vehicle traveling at appx. 65mph on freeway when it noticeably jumped, immediately lost most but not all power. towed to dealership. dealer could not repeat nor verify concern in 4 days / 150 miles of testing. research has shown that nhtsa is investigating similar issues on this and other model year ford escapes. my experience sounds very similar to complaints from other drivers. *tr

Driving around 65mph and the car suddenly shuts off and the check engine light came on, loss of all power all i could do was try to make my way from the fast lane over to the shoulder, drifted to the side of the road and turned the car off and it restarted after a few minutes and drove fine all the way home, a few days later it did the same thing, cut off while doing around 60mph again in the fast lane i had to try and get over through 4 lanes of traffic with cars blowing by me at over 80mph to get to the shoulder, this is going to get someone killed. i called ford and they know of the issue, seems the issue is so bad the part thats the cause of the problem (the throttle body) is on back order, you have been investigating since feb. why has this not been recalled yet? *tr

My vehicle loses all power while pressing the accelerator. i had it diagnosed with problem code p2111. a very dangerous situation to be put in while operating a vehicle. the only way to solve the problem is to stop the engine, then restart. *tr

I was driving on the interstate at about 70 mph. suddenly, without notice the car began to slow down and depressing accelerated did nothing. i was able to coast to the shoulder where the car continued to idle roughly with the wrench indicator light on. i turned the ignition off and waited a few seconds. i started the car and engine ran somewhat normally. same issue occurred on return trip a few hours later. took to ford dealer who diagnosed as needed the throttle body replaced. said the part was on back order and would probably take 4 weeks to get it. this issue could result in very serious injury if it occurs in heavy traffic conditions. *tr

Made turn into traffic, speed was about 30 mph. went to accelerate, no power. engine rpms dropped. stepped on gas pedal to accelerate . no response. drifted over to side of road. placed into neutral and tried to increase rpms. no response. turned off ignition to call for aid as the roadway was busy, then tried to restart car . car started normally. rpms resumed normal. placed car into drive and drove off normally. happened again on three different occasions. happened the other night three times. deemed the car unsafe to drive. waiting for an appointment to get repaired. on line forums indicate there is a problem with the throttle, whether it be a sensor or communication with the on board computed. *tr

On several intermittent occasions beginning on june 15, 2013 my ford escape would jerk forward and lose power (even on the freeway). sometimes i am able to move over to the side of the road and others it dies before i can move it out of the intersection or street. this has happened when me and my two children were in the car which is extremely dangerous. the check engine light and wrench illuminates. this problem is spontaneous and can drive for several miles without an incident and then occurs out of nowhere again. when i took the car to the mechanic he informed me that the code p2112 showed that my throttle body needed to be replaced as it was getting stuck closed. i have heard that several other ford vehicles are having similar issues and this needs to be investigated asap. after spending $370 to fix the problem i feel that this issue could have been resolved beforehand. please prevent this from happening to other families. *tr

Experienced repeated stalling of engine while going 40+ miles per hour. engine would run for approx. one block then stall. vehicle went to limp mode. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled and could not be restated. the check engine and the power train warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the failure was reported to the manufacturer and they stated that the part was on back order. the failure and current mileage was 43,000. the consumer stated while driving, she suddenly felt the vehicle loose power even though she was pressing on the accelerator. the wrench and engine light illuminated on the dash.

While driving the engine lost power. the engine continued to run but would not add any rpms when applying the accelerator. the engine light also came on. i was able to keep the vehicle moving at an idle to get out of traffic. top speed was only about 5 mph. vehicle had to be towed to dealership. service department was unable to find anything wrong with my vehicle. about one month later the same problem occurred while driving on roadway approximately 50 mph. same symptoms with same results. service department did replace the throttle housing this time. *tr

Driving on i-95 north....at 60 mph....when the engine almost completely stalled out without warning. the car speed dropped down to 5-7mph...and the car started shaking and the engine began rough surging. i barely missed being hit by a large semi truck as i inched the car over to the curb. i was able to get the car off the expressway (going about 5 mph) at the next exit and then turned the car off. the wrench light also appeared. i turned the car off .i called my husband, who told me to see if i could restart the car after 15 minutes. it started back up and i was able to drive home. the car worked okay for 3 more weeks and then the same thing happened to me again .....and almost caused an accident again. i was able to get the car home, i have parked the car and will no longer use it. *tr

I was driving at around 25mph on a surface road, when the engine suddenly lost power, and my speed dropped to 5mph ("limp mode"). i pulled over to the side of the road, turned off the engine, and then restarted the engine after a minute. it seemed to run normally. i took it in to a shop for inspection, and they couldn't identify the cause. however about 1 month later, the exact same situation reoccurred, so i took it to the ford dealership service department. they said it was due to a bad throttle body. it took 3 weeks for them to get the throttle body, which was apparently backordered, probably because so many other people had to replace their throttle bodies as well. i had to pay for this repair out of pocket. it would seem this defective throttle body issue is widespread among certain ford models, including the escape. this is a very unsafe defect, and this part should be recalled to prevent any accidents from occurring. i'm very upset that despite this issue having been known about since late 2011/early 2012, i was never notified by ford and had to find out the hard way, with my car losing power in the middle of moving traffic. on top of that, because the car was a few months out of warranty, i was forced to pay $670 out of pocket to have this repaired.

Was driving down a busy highway. suv decelerated in speed and wrench light came on. we had a self test diagnostic got code p2111 took it to shop they got same code and replaced throttle body at my expense. used a ford authorized dealer. *tr

I was traveling at highway speed, 60 mph, when the engine suddenly lost power and i had to coast to the side of the road. the warning indicating a problem with the throttle control/powertrain came on. i turned the motor off and restarted the engine, the light went off, and i proceeded to work without further incident. after researching on the internet and talking to my dealer, i was told it was a defective throttle body part and is on "national back order" and will be at least 2 weeks before they can get the part in. on the same day, on the drive from home from work, the exact same problem happened, but this time at about 35 mph in traffic. fortunately no one was right on my bumper at the time. there is absolutely no warning when this happens, it just suddenly loses power. *tr

I was driving under normal driving conditions on the expressway when the car suddenly jerked and i no longer could accelerate and the service engine light on the dashboard began flashing. fortunately, i was able to get on to the shoulder and call a tow truck. it was due to a faulty throttle body. per the dealer where my vehicle was towed to, the part needed was on ford's national backorder list and they did not know when the part would become available. it took 5 weeks to get the part. it has only been about 7 weeks and my car did the same jerk on the expressway again today. i was able to continue driving to work as no service lights ignited on the dashboard, but i will be taking my vehicle in to get checked again. *jb

While driving check engine light came on and car wont accelorate for me as hard as i press accelorater did not make difference just wouldn't go any faster. if i was on highway or someone behind me it sure would be major problem.

My 2010 ford escape is going into limp mode while driving. it just stops responding to the accelerator and limps along until i can pull off the road and turn the car off. in the beginning, i could start the car back up and drive home. but it is beginning to happen more often and now i cannot drive it at all. *tr

Three time within 5 miles the vehicle stopped accelerating and giving it more gas did nothing. i would have to coast to the side of the road and hope no one hit me in traffic. i took the car to a mechanic and he said the throttle body was faulty. *tr

I had not had my vehicle for 3 months before experiencing a problem. on several occasions, i was driving and my suv lost power. each time, i had to pull off to the side, wait a few minutes, cut the csuv off and then back on until the car would start again. this made my travel very dangerous on the highway. took my suv to the dealership and at first they could not find what was wrong with it because the error had not registered. i had to wait until the check engine light came on to discover it was the throttle body. i had to pay over $300 to get it replaced. it took awhile for ford ran out of the part and had to order it from their warehouse. luckily, the repair shop was able to find a replacement within 2 days. after having the throttle body replaced, it takes a while for the suv to shift into gear and often feels like it is stalling or dragging. *tr

Car cut off while driving. ford dealer said it is the throttle body. will take 4 to 5 weeks to receive the replacement part. *tr

My car stalled out as i was driving down the street. i had to turn off my car and restart it. it was able to restart but about 5 minutes later it did the same thing. at one point i was in the middle of an intersection. when i took it in to the dealership they told me this was happening to many other ford escapes as well as ford fusions. at this point they told me the part was back ordered for 2-3 weeks. they told me most people were just able to drive the car with the random stalling out until the parts came in. *tr

Wrench light came on while driving car and barely had enough rpms to get off road. had to pull battery cable off to get car to move. this happened three times to get the car 20 miles to home then trailered to ford dealer. said it was a bad tb. the car has also stalled at 0mph and sometimes surges. one time this winter the car surged causing it to hit my tractor and busted bumper cover and fog lamp. *tr

The engine stalled while i was driving on the express way. with no power i coasted (luckily) to the shoulder. the same thing happened to my wife in the same vehicle the previous monday. it was towed to a mechanics garage where it was diagnosed with a throttle body problem. he cleaned it, test drove it and sent her on her way. obviously there is still a problem. *tr

I was driving down the street when my car stopped and check engine light came on wrench icon also came on as i tried to accelerate car. *tr

While driving on the interstate in morning rush hour traffic, the vehicle suddenly lost power and throttle control (went into limp mode). i had to move over to the emergency without power and stop the vehicle. after turning the vehicle off for a few minutes, it started and ran ok. then on 10 june, the same issues occurred again at highway speeds but in little traffic. again on 14 june it happened 3 times within driving 10 miles again on the interstate at highway speed and in afternoon rush hour traffic. the third time an obd ii dtc was issued. upon arrival home i scanned the code and it was p2112 throttle body stuck closed. *tr

The first incident occurred around june 3, 2013, but i don't remember the exact date. after backing out of my driveway and shifting into drive, as i accelerated through 2nd gear, it dropped out of gear into idle and i had no engine acceleration response from the gas pedal, no matter which gear i put it in. the wrench light also came on. after turning the engine off and restarting, the wrench light went out and the car worked normally. this happened approximately 5-7 times beginning around june 3, 2013 until i decided to take it to the dealership on june 18, 2013. i paid ford $120 to diagnose the problem. they were unable to find anything wrong, but did reset the shift points. it did not happen again until july 12, 2013. while driving to work at approximately 60mph, the engine dropped out of gear and the wrench light came on. i had no engine response with the gas pedal and had to carefully coast over to the service/emergency lane. while on the side of the road, i called ford and they told me after i brought my escape in, multiple escapes and fusions had come in with the same problem which was troubleshoot down to the throttle body. they ordered the throttle body and said they would call me when it came in. i turned off the ignition, restarted, and continued driving. approximately 2 minutes after getting back on the road it happened again, only this time the check engine light came on along with the wrench light. this time after restarting the engine, the check engine light stayed on. i drove to ford and left it running so they could acquire any codes that were active. the throttle body was ordered on july 12, 2013 and ford has no estimate of a shipment date. the car is currently with ford awaiting the part while they pay for my rental. there are also two vehicles ahead of mine at the dealership waiting for the same part. *tr

Traveling on vacation on an ohio highway when engine stalled and went into limp home mode and yellow wrench light came on. i was able to pull over and had to shut the vehicle completely off. after about 5 minutes i was able to get the car started again. this problem did not reoccur until august 20. *tr

Vehicle looses power while driving at speed over 65. would not accelerate and had to pull over while car started to shake. vehicle also idles very hard while on and in parked position or stopped with brakes on. *tr

Engine lost power and coasted to side of road. towed to dealer, keyser miller ford, 8 east main st., collegeville, pa 19426. they stated the problem was the "throttle body", and it needed to be replaced. they said it was a common problem with the escapes. parts next to impossible to obtain. *tr

Power was lost and the throttle had no response-engine ran rough but would not respond to throttle-had to restart to regain power-very,very, frightening. *tr

While driving, the vehicle stalled out 1 time today, 1 time yesterday, and 1 time about 3 weeks ago. no sign of a problem until the engine stopped accelerating suddenly. called the ford dealer today, and they say it is a known problem with this make/model/year. he said the throttle body is bad and will have to be replaced. however, these parts are on about a 2 week wait because they are on "national backorder". obviously a bigger problem than ford can keep up with. this stalling is dangerous because it happens at highway speeds. the car can be doing 45+ and suddenly slow down to a stop, risking injury to the people in the car and other motorists. ford needs to announce a recall to keep someone from getting hurt. *tr

Car suddenly has no gas, engine is running but no control over acceleration . *tr

My vehicle is a 2010 ford escape 6 cyc with 4 wd. this was a new vehicle purchased in early 2010 as it had 4.7 miles on it when purchased and i put most of those miles on it during the test drive. when traveling at highway speed recently in heavy traffic the vehicle suddenly lost all ability to accelerate. it was as if there was no gas pedal in the vehicle at all. no shuddering, or chugging after this occurred and absolutely no warning at all before it occurred. it was extremely lucky that no one was injured as i attempted to make my way across 4 lanes of traffic to the shoulder. the vehicle never shut off when this occurred. i then turned the vehicle off, waited, and then restarted and it seemed to run fine. i took it to the ford dealership where it was purchased to assess the situation. i was told the battery was bad which they replaced. i questioned as to how a battery could cause this type of problem as i understand some of the vehicle mechanics and my research showed that it was more than likely a throttle body issue and i was assured that battery was most certainly the issue due to the complex nature of vehicles today and their on board computers. when the battery was replaced my wife picked up the vehicle and had just entered the interstate when at highway speed the same exact problem occurred where an accident was almost caused by her efforts to exit the road. again no warning. when it was restarted it was driven back to the dealership. today, it was confirmed by the ford dealership that in fact it was the throttle body issue that my research had show it to be, and more so, the part, which is somehow not a safety recalled item by the nhtsa, is on back-order by ford because of the shear number of these parts going bad and needing to be replaced in so many vehicles. i now own a vehicle that cannot be operated safely without a safety recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the vehicle began idle roughly and failed to accelerate. the vehicle was stopped and restarted before resuming normal operation. the failure recurred on ten occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis but no cause for failure was found. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure and current mileage was 63,000. updated 10/29/13*cn

The vehicle just dies as though it ran out of gas. the vehicle stays running, does not loose the power to radio or lights etc, but dies as if out of gas. i pull over to the side of the road and it idles very rough. place in park, turn the key to the off position and restart no problems. however the vehicle now does it on the highway while traveling at 80 miles per hour. there obviously is some thing wrong with this....a huge safety problem. *tr

While entering a freeway at 40mph the car stalled, thankfully there was a shoulder to pull on to otherwise we would've been rear ended. this has happened at differing speeds as well. the wrench light in the dash comes on and the vehicle stalls. restarting vehicle will usually resume with no issues. no codes are stored so dealer can't find problem. this has happened 10x's at least. i'm scared to let my wife or daughter drive this vehicle. no signs given that it will stall. *tr

Took off from stop light, made a left turn and while in middle of turn, felt loss of power, car would not accelerate. i looked at dash and noticed what looked like a battery symbol in red and the oil symbol in red. coasted to side of road. turned ignition to off position, waited a second or two and turned back on. vehicle started right back up and i continued on my way. *tr

The vehicle lost power while on highway at 65mph. engine did not stop running completely but the vehicle would not go. had to pull over, turn vehicle off and restart. did this 6 separate times 3 on 5/30 and 3 on 5/31/13. this has been diagnosed as a common problem by repair shop as faulty throttle body. *tr

The vehicle lost power while driving at relatively constant speed. the engine hesitated, car did not accelerate when the gas pedal was applied. the engine then stalled. i pulled over, restarted the engine, and the car seem to run normally after this first incident. the vehicle has continued to intermittently have the same issue, although it may need to be restarted a few times before acting normal again. the vehicle was towed because it stalled and seem unable to make the drive home. the engine throttle was cleaned in august by a mechanic, but stalled repeatedly 3 days later. using dry gas and keeping the tank nearly full has not solved the issue either. my experience seems similar to many complaints found at this website and other places on the internet. *js

Driving off exit ramp and escape went into "limp mode". this "limp mode" has happened on the highway and side roads 6 to 8 times. this throttle box replacement is at my expense. ford dealer will no cover,as i was told "the escapes do not have a throttle body issue." *tr

While driving in neighborhood at approx. 15mph, engine stalled and orange wrench light came on. pulled over to side of street, shut down engine and then restarted. engine ran fine for another 2 weeks and then same event occurred with wife driving. one week later, did same thing while i was driving. ford dealer has car now and says they are waiting for a throttle body. car has been in shop for over 1 week so far. *tr

I was driving on the highway at 60 mph in cruise control and the car suddenly died. the check engine light came on and when i stepped on the pedal nothing happened. the ac unit and radio continued to work fine. when the car finally came to a stop, i turned off the engine and restarted it and it came back on like normal. the check engine light was no longer on. i was able to drive home fine. *tr

The vehicle started stalling while approaching a traffic light and continued to stall to where eventually the gas pedal was non-operational. the car was taken to a ford dealership and a mechanic diagnosed that the throttle body was not operating properly and needed to be replaced. ford staff indicated the part is not covered under the power train warranty and the replacement part would have to be paid out of pocket at the owner's expense. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate. the engine and wrench warning icon illuminated as the vehicle proceeded to engage into limp mode. the failure recurred intermittently. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 64,000. *tr

Driving on highway, heard a little pop and had sudden loss of power from depressed accelerator, but engine was on - no warning light on dash. was going on downward incline, able to go from left lane to shoulder on right; engine shook violently then and i turned it off. waited a minutes, turned back on; idling had a little "miss" but able to finish trip. upon return home, took vehicle to mechanic, found no historic code in computer and nothing found on test drive. on 6/07, again on highway and without warning, car again lost power from accelerator - immediate loss of momentum almost caused me to be broadsided by large suv merging from off ramp as i am trying to coast to the shoulder. same thing, engine shook, i turned it off; again no warning light. occurred two more times and we turned around for home. same thing happened two more times on the return trip - the yellow wrench warning light came on the last two times. very hazardous condition, i plan to not drive and take to the dealer as soon as i can. i see there is a known issue with the throttle body and feel a recall should be implemented, especially since the condition suddenly puts a driver in a very dangerous position and i will have to pay for a known design / device problem to be repaired. *tr

On the highway in the left lane - very busy area with traffic merging from right when engine stopped - no power at all. terrifying! luckily, i was somehow able to get across three lanes of high speed traffic to the breakdown lane. needed a tow to my ford dealer (55 miles). they diagnosed a defective electronic throttle control and due to the fact this part was backordered, i did not have a car for over a week. expensive fix. *tr

While driving in light traffic on the interstate freeway, just coming over a hill, the engine lost power. multiple power loss surges and the engine light came on so the ford escape was allow to coast down hill to the next exit ramp. once at the bottom of the off ramp, the ignition was turned off and a tow truck was called. to move the car out of the way, the engine was restarted and it was noticed that another light was also turned on indicating something mechanical (transmission) had also failed. the car was barely able to move in 1st gear to clear the side of the road till the tow truck arrived. later the mechanic read the trouble codes and said the throttle body failed and the transmission torque converter was seriously damaged. fortunately the traffic was not heavy and there was opportunity to exit the freeway without crashing. *tr
