Problems with 2010 Ford Escape ENGINE

On average, the 2010 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 57 045 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2010 Ford Escape

While driving to work, the engine suddenly lost power. stepping on the gas produced no effect. driving slowly to the side of the road i restarted the engine, and proceeded to work. this was a daily occurrence both going to work in the morning, and returning in the evening. took the car to a mechanic and was told that it was the throttle body. *tr

I was driving down the freeway when suddenly, my engine lost power. a wrench light came on, and my throttle was completely unresponsive. fortunately, i was in the right lane, so i was able to coast safely off the freeway and onto the side of the road. i shut my car off, waited a minute or two, and then restarted my car. everything seemed fine after that. this happened again, now totaling 6 times, all while i was driving. went to the mechanic, he called the dealership. he was told that this was a very common problem and that he could put a rush order on it for an additional 15% of the price, and it would still take 2 weeks. through normal channels, it would wake several months. i need my car to work, and two things bother me the most: a rush order would still take 2 weeks to be delivered, and if it's a common problem, it feels as though ford is doing nothing to alleviate it, especially since it impairs my ability to drive safely on the road. i am constantly paranoid while driving on the road, and i have no other choice but to continue to drive my car, since it's my only means of transportation. *tr

My vehicle started shaking and the wrench light came on i pulled over and turned it off, restarted it and was able to drive home the next day it happened again and i drove it into the dealer that i had just purchased the vehicle from 6 weeks earlier and they determined it was the throttle motor. the vehicle is still under warranty but they want me to pay for half of repair and i have discovered this is a common problem in this vehicle and i am afraid if they put in the same part i will continue to have this problem down the road. *tr

Driving around 60mph and car started to shake as i tried to accelerated to pull over i could not get the car to accelerate. i coasted to the side of the rode and put on my hazzard lights. i turned the car off for a few minutes and placed a call to my son to come get me. i started it again and tried to go and it started to accelerate again and then called hub city ford where i purchased the car. they said they had several people call with the problem but there was no recall as of yet and it runs around $765.00 to repair. i asked about warranty and they said this particular part was 3 year or 30,000 miles. i exceeded the mileage. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact pulled to the side of the road and restarted the vehicle. the contact did not take the vehicle to the dealer or mechanic. the contact did not call the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 62,189.

Car stalled with a wrench on dashboard. had to turn the car off and on again. took longer to start. *tr

After being at a stoplight, i was accelerating around a corner about 25 mph and the car suddenly lost power and would no longer accelerate. the engine light came on. i had to coast to the side of the road and put my hazards on. i was quickly able to restart the car and drive home, although the same thing happened twice the very next day while accelerating after being at a stoplight. *tr

While on my way home one night my car just cut off and left me stranded on the side of the road. *tr

At 35 mph engine rpm decreased to idle and i had to stop and turn off engine and restart. this then again happened at a higher speed the engine rpm decreasing to idle. i was able to pull to the side of road to restart engine. on a busy road this could cause an accident. *tr

Vehicle would stutter and then stall on multiple occasions. happened once on the first day, twice on the second, and 5 times (including 3 on the way to the dealership) on the third day. this is extremely unsafe, as you are never sure when it is going to happen. i was told that i have a "bad throttle body." *tr

We were traveling at 55 mph on the highway when my ford escape suddenly stalled and would no longer respond when i pressed the accelerator. my suv slowed to a stop where i cut it off. unfortunately, i did not have enough speed to pull off to a safe location and was stuck in the middle of the very busy highway where i was almost sideswiped by a tractor trailer truck. it was a very scary situation to say the least. this has since happened 3 more times, the most recent being yesterday august 23 on an interstate overpass in rush hour traffic. again i did not have enough speed to pull off to a safe location and was stuck in the center lane of the overpass. i was able to restart my car soon after stalling out and was able to an auto store that pulled the code of p2112, which is the throttle body code. of course my warranty ran out in june 2013 and ford estimates the repair to cost $500 minimum. and sadly, i am now afraid to drive my escape as i fear it will get me into an accident. i ask that ford take responsibility for the obvious flaw in throttle body and make the recall! *tr

We were riding on interstate 40 traveling at about 75mph. my 18 year old son was driving. the vehicle suddenly lost power. we had to pull to the side of the interstate. luckily there was not any traffic or transfer trucks directly behind us. without warning, the vehicle lost power and the 'wrench light' came on. we immediately dropped down to about 40 mph. we sat beside of the interstate and called my husband to come to where we were. we did not attempt to crank the vehicle while waiting for him because we did not know what was wrong and feared causing further damage (i was not familiar with the throttle/powertrain light warning). when my husband got there, we cranked the vehicle and i drove us home without incident. i was afraid to allow my son to drive it because i feared the same thing would happen again. i hate to think what could have happened had there been another car or a transfer truck behind us. due to the fact that we lost power without warning and so suddenly, i feel that if there had been a transfer truck directly behind us it would not have had time to stop or slow down and it would have hit us. thankfully, we are scared, but fine this time. we are now afraid to drive my 2010 ford escape on any interstate or in any fast moving traffic. *tr

Taking a turn off the main road when the car started shaking, lunging and had no throttle control, limited to about 10 mph. a dangerous situation on a curvy road, with no break down lane. the error code returned was p2112, the throttle body needed to be replaced. nothing visually appeared wrong with the old part. *tr

Driving on major highway at 60 mph the engine shut off and we coasted to the grassy part of the shoulder. shut car off, waited 5 mins. restarted the car. than it happened several times after that. took it to dealer and had the throttle body replaced. thank god were able to pull of on the shoulder each time. looking on the internet, this has happened many times to several other owners. *tr

Car stalled in traffic! *tr

Driving my 2010 ford escape on highway at 55 mph in heavy traffic when the engine stopped running. was lucky to get off highway. tried to start car for 10 minutes, finally started. went a few miles and motor cut off again in heavy traffic and cost into shopping center. after another 10 minutes it started and was able to get it home. i was lucky that i was near home and not on a trip. was able to get it to ford dealer where i was told it was the throttle body assembly and not covered under factory warranty even though in the owner's guide the light for the "wrench" (which came on with the check engine light) indicates "throttle control/powertrain". my powertrain warranty is still in effect. i was told that "they" had seen this before and just got a shipment in with many "throttle bodies". the cost to me was $761.62 (parts $432.02). i talked to my mechanic and he said that he has seen this a number of times on 2010-2012 escapes and sent everyone to ford because he can't fix it. not only is this an apparent recurring problem it is also a safety issue. *tr

While traveling at highway speed car lost all power. i was able to slow to a safe stop. dealer tells me its the electronic body. i find out that another area dealer has replaced 96 of these this year alone. this sounds like a problem ford needs to take care of. the kicker is that its not covered by my warranty. *tr

Vehicle has the same throttle body condition as other failed units. code p2111. *tr

Vehicle begins to loose power/ stall. the "wrench" light illuminates on the dash. after pulling over and restarting, it will go another 5 - 10 miles and it does it again. after 2 - 3 times it will throw the "check engine" light (code p2112). we checked/ cleaned the throttle body and cleared the code. car ran ok for about 3 days (50 miles), and it happened again. we are looking into hiring an attorney as ford does not want to help cover the cost to repair this defect. i have two young children that ride in this car, and uncontrolled stalling and sputtering is dangerous on busy streets. twice, this happened in the middle of an intersection, and at one time, it completely died going 40 mph, and the power steering quit, causing me to almost head into oncoming traffic. please help us and others with this issue, before someone is seriously injured or loses their life. *tr

Driving down the highway, my car suddenly lost the ability to accelerate and i could no longer continue down the road. i pulled over and my car was running extremely rough. it almost felt like the car was bucking due to a novice driving a manual transmission - note that this was when i was parked as well as when i was decelerating. i noticed the orange wrench lit up on my dash and got a tow to the nearest dealership. the dealership called me and let me know it was a throttle body issue and it has been replaced. my car only had 48k on it and there is no way in my opinion that this should happen. i feel like i'm having money stolen from my wallet due to the fact ford is fully aware of the problem but is not taking proactive steps to fix it. *tr

Vehicle was traveling on highway when the vehicle shook and started to stall and shut off at 55 mph. the vehicle slowed down and the engine light and wrench light illuminated. vehicle was shuttering and slowing down with the engine cutting out. i immediately attempted to get off the road in order to not have a rear end accident with any speeding vehicles traveling behind the car. once car was shut off, vehicle had a clicking noise when turning the car over to start, then restarted to a normal condition. at 45 mph on a city street, 3 days later the same stall and engine cut out occurred. *tr

On 6/18/2013 i was driving around 45 mph and my escape's engine/power train completely turned off and i coasted onto the shoulder. i waited a few minutes and it started again. i took it to a garage we use and they could not find the problem. a few days later the engine shut down again when i was driving around 60 mph. i coasted to the shoulder of the highway, waited a few minutes and started it again. on 8/2/2013 the engine shut down once again. this time the engine light came on. i paid over $600 to have the throttle body replaced at this time. *tr

Vehicle suddenly shut off while driving. now vehicle shuts off every time when driven around 40-45 and 55-60. *tr

While driving on 3 lane highway (in traffic) car bucked and lost gas pedal (did nothing when pushed) i was in center lane engine went to idol with no engine control looked in mirror seen truck lights ( very scary ) when u can't do nothing luckily able to get off road . turned off engine an re started it when a short distance then same thing happened. did this 7 times in less than 7 miles luck i made it to my drive way (had towed to dealer next day) waiting for it to be fixed. this is a death waiting to happen. *tr

It, has happen various times since august, as i drive, the engine start to either misfire or no power at all, it idle normal but as soonest i step on the accelerator start the problem, has light the check engine several times and as the mechanic scans the vehicle the only code that shows is p2111, the last time that happens, have to use a towing service because can get it moving, before i used to turn the engine off, wait several seconds and started again and the situation disappears for a few days and appears back again. please advice. *tr

We were driving down the highway as a family with 4 total people in the car. the engine and motor lost total power. you could put your foot to the floor on the gas pedal and the engine would have no power and not rev up with no rpm. we almost got rear ended and blasted from behind by a semi-truck. the semi-truck had to take evasive action and if the outside lane had be blocked and he was not able to change lanes then he would of hit us as he showed his displeasure by blasting his horn at me and my family as he skated by. we had to coast over to the shoulder of the highway. once on the shoulder with cars zipping by and children scared in the car we was able to turn the vehicle off. then reset it and re-start the car and everything would be fine again for a while. the check engine light comes on but after you reset and restart the car the light goes off till the next time. this started as a random thing but has developed into a daily deal and become very dangerous in the middle of traffic. this happens daily now while driving at a speed of 25 mph plus and has no warning sign. being told it is a faulty circuit board in the throttle body by the dealership and a $500 plus deal to fix. this occurrence is risking the health, livelihood and safety of my family and kids. wear and tear maintenance on a vehicle i am ok with fixing but a factory faulty circuit board is not one of those parts and is on the liability of ford motor company as a manufacture defect.

Driving down interstate 45 in houston, car was running, but no power from the gas pedal. needed to coast to an exit where i stopped completely. i needed to power down the car completely then restart the car before the gas pedal worked again. this has happened twice. the other time was about a month earlier. ford service department said it was a defective "throttle body". something like that shouldn't fail so early. i was just out of my warranty as well. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated while traveling 40 mph the vehicle stalled. the contact stated the check engine light and wrench light illuminated on the instrument panel when the failure occurred. the contact had to pull to the side of the road and they were able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic where the code indicated the starter actuator was stuck in the open position. the mechanic cleaned out the throttle body which helped the contact drive home before the failure occurred again. the failure and current mileage was 49,000.

Left work, and as started up a road, the car stalled and wrench light came on. luckily no one was behind me as i would have been rear-ended i pulled over, restarted car, looked up light, proceeded. it stalled two more times before i got home (driving in the right hand lane so could get out of moving traffic quickly , the third time the engine light came on. getting it to the dealer the car stalled again. i reported the problem to the dealer, who confirmed it was the throttle that needed replacing. *tr

Driving down the highway and the engine went "limp". the vehicle did not stall but did not have any power. pulled off to the side of the road, observed the wrench light on the dashboard. after a minute i turned off and then restarted the vehicle without problem. approximately 8-10 miles down the road the exact same issue arose. pulled off to the side of the road and restarted once again. additionally, the engine light came on an stayed on. previously, over the past year i have experienced more subtle issues when trying to accelerate in which the vehicle sort of hiccups and then eventually begins to accelerate. had the engine code read and determined the 2112 code identified a stuck throttle. *tr

I was driving down a local street then i was approaching a train crossing, just before crossing the tracks, my car went limp and i could no longer accelerate. i was only traveling 5-10mph so when my car stopped, part of my car was over the train tracks. i could not move my car for about a minute while i parked my car and turned everything off, including opening the car door to shut the computer off. then after resetting the car, it struggled to start up but started and drove as usual. within the last two days, my car shut down during driving 5 times and when re-starting, it did not indicate that there was a problem. finally the check engine icon turned on and i was able to take it to the dealership to check the code. it turned out that the throttle body needed replacing. my car is only 3 years old with average mileage. this could have been an terrible accident if there was a train and i was in a state of panic. *tr

As i was entering my neighborhood, i noticed that the vehicle's gas pedal was no longer working. i looked at the dash and noticed that a wrench icon on the lower left of the instrument panel was lit. the escape was still going, but was not responding to the gas pedal. i turned on the hazard lights and pulled up to the curb and put the vehicle in park. i turned the vehicle off, counted to 10 and then started it again. i was able to continue driving and the vehicle again responded to the gas pedal. after some research, i found that my experience is termed "limp mode" and is itself a safety feature. i took the vehicle to an auto parts store who hooked it up to their diagnostic equipment and could not pull an error code off of it. the technician recommended i look into the throttle body and throttle position sensor. during that research, i found that other ford escape drivers have had the same experience. *tr

While driving at highway speed, vehicle stalled, no power, we had to pull over onto the shoulder. the wrench icon was displayed. after turning off the vehicle, we were able to restart engine and travel home. the same thing happened two more times. luckily, we were able to pull over with no collision, although on two occasions, traffic was heavy. after the third incident, we made an appointment at our ford dealer service department. they diagnosed throttle body failure and replaced the throttle body at the cost of $500.00, not covered by warranty. mileage on the odometer is 55,000. why has there been no recall on this part? are you waiting for serious injury or death? this is an extremely hazardous incident waiting to happen. ford motor company and the nhtsa are obligated to protect the public and issue a recall as soon as possible. *tr

While driving on the interstate and entering a ramp, the engine just lost power and there was a rapid deceleration. the car had no power and i had to pull over to the shoulder in heavy traffic. there was a wrench symbol lit up on the dash. i towed the car to a ford dealer in bettendorf iowa. they told me the problem was a bad throttle body and it would have to be replaced. there was a shortage of parts because there was 5 cars ahead of me waiting for the same parts. sounds like a common major problem. should be recalled for this problem. it could have created a dangerous situation. *jb

My husband was driving out of a parking lot when all of a sudden the orange wrench light came on. the car started to decrease in acceleration even though his foot was on the gas pedal. he then applied pressure to the brakes to pull over to the side and the car pulsed to a stop. he put the car in park and shut it off. when trying to restart the car would not turn over right away, and took at least 5 seconds or more for it to start. since this issue has occurred, it has happened 7 more times in a matter of 5 days. luckily this happened while my husband was driving my car and he continues to drive it until we get it fixed. i primarily drive this car 99% of the time and i am 7 months pregnant. i can't even imagine what i would do if this happened to me on the highway or in the middle of a busy intersection. we are very lucky that no one got hurt during these instances. i can't believe ford has not done a major recall on this issue. my sister in-law had the same issues with her 2009 escape and just recently had her throttle body replaced as well. the lack of caring about its customers will definitely make me rethink about ever buying a ford again. *tr

Just driving along one day and upon crossing an intersection of a busy street the call stalled. i pushed the gas pedal and couldnt accelerate. luckily i was able to pull of on a side street without holding up traffic. when i got to the side street i shut the car off and started it again and after taking awhile it finally started back up only to do the same thing a block later. the problem seemed to have gone away for a couple weeks but has came back recently and is ever more frequent. when it sets over night or for long periods of time it is driveable but after a few miles it starts to stall again. driving under 30 mph or accelerating super slow seems to help some times but not always. still probably not very safe to drive it like that especially pulling onto a busy street or out into a busy intersection. *tr

I was driving on the freeway at 65 in the slow lane when suddenly the vehicle seemed to loose power. the engine was still running but the accelerator would not work. no gas seemed to be going to the engine but it was still running. the good thing was i was in the slow lane otherwise i would have been in serious trouble. i shut the engine off and waited a few moments before restarting. it started up and i was able to drive home. researching the problem on the internet led me to this site but it would appear that this is a common problem which ford needs to take of before someone is killed. *tr

Wife was driving vehicle 6 miles from home, vehicle began stumbling and would hardly run. made it out of 4 lane road to safety. wrench symbol showed till engine was turned off. shut off vehicle and restarted after approx. 5 minutes, continued 1 mile to destination. after vehicle set for 2 hours drove it 7 miles home and vehicle limped up driveway. wife was afraid to drive vehicle until 7/28/2013 when we tried it again. i can not drive vehicle since having a stroke but was with her. we drove vehicle to ymca and it went to limping after 9 miles, shut off and let set for 5-6 minutes. vehicle ran ok for an additional 5 miles to y. started home after 1 hour at y. vehicle ran approx 5 miles in 45 and 30 mph speed limit area. it started limping approx. 500 feet from stop light. it went in limp mode 4 more times in the last 9 miles to get home. luckily the traffic was not real heavy late in afternoon and we made it home without any accidents; only a very stressful ride home. vehicle now showed engine symbol. we read the fault code and it was p2111 or faulty throttle body. this is a very expensive repair which dealer said was out of warranty at 36k. miles. *tr

Around 5pm driving home on a main street during rush hour, i was driving about 35-40mph and suddenly my vehicle, an automatic transmission 2010 ford escape xlt, stopped accelerating and began to tug. also, the throttle control/power train light turned on. i turned on the emergency hazard lights and attempted to deviated to a parking lot where i turned off my vehicle. i waited a few minutes to turn it back on, and the vehicle turned on as usual. the throttle control light was no longer on. i proceeded to drive home, but it wasn't 5 miles into the trip when the vehicle malfunctioned again. a few days passed and my vehicle was working okay, however i started to notice a sluggish feel to it, as well as that it was having trouble shifting gears. today, driving home again, i was driving on the interstate about 50mph, and the vehicle unexpectedly malfunctioned. i nearly got rear ended. now both the throttle control and engine check lights turned on. i turned off my vehicle, and this time the engine check remains on. i called the ford dealership where i purchased my vehicle and was told to make an appointment. *tr

This is the second incident on vehicle, which occurred on aug.13,2013 while driving approx.35/40 m.p.h. everything was almost exactly like the first incident, except this time the check engine light stayed on until the next day when i returned it to my ford dealer for repair. the ford dealer replaced ( not for free ) the throttle body & motor asy. they said it was a loss of communication from the tps sensor inside throttle body. anyhow the car is back on the road tonight , aug 15, 2013 & seems fine. hope it stays like this. ps -- as an after thought the ford dealer couldn't have been nicer. *tr

My wife was driving with my daughter, mother and sister at approx. 40mph. in traffic, when the car apparently went into fail safe mode and bogged down the engine to where she could not accelerate or maneuver the car out of traffic. she finally was able to get out of harms way and pulled of into a parking lot. from there she turned the car off, and started the car and proceeded to baby the accelerator so she was able to return several miles home. from there, i took the car around the block and accelerated quickly where the car returned to fail safe mode and cut the engine. i checked the car with an obdii code reader which came up with the p2112 code and said "throttle actuator control system - stuck closed". *tr

Driving and gas pedal lost all power. pulled to side of road, engine continued to run about 700/800 rpm. i noticed the wrench symbol was lit in dashboard so i turned off a/c opened all windows & shut off engine. after about 30 seconds or so, i re-started the car & drove back home (approx. 35 miles) . the following day i took the vehicle to a ford dealer & explained my problem. dealer said this was probably a throttle control / powertrain problem. they offered me some suggestions to help with this trouble, which i have done. as of today 7/25/2013 vehicle seems to be running fine. i hope this gets resolved because i really like this vehicle. *tr

While driving down the high way at approx. 65mpg the "check engine" light and the orange wrench light came on indicating an issue with the power train. at the same time the gas pedal became unresponsive while the engine rpms dropped to a rough idle the fluctuated between 800-1200 rpms. after turning the car off and then back on the "check engine" light was on but the orange wrench symbol was no longer lit. i continued to drive home, multiple times after that the wrench light came on, throttle became unresponsive and the engine dropped to a rough idle. each time this happened i turned the engine off and then turned it back on and the engine operated as normal for a time till the wrench light came on and the throttle became unresponsive. upon plugging the car to a diagnostic i had 3 error codes that indicated that the throttle actuator was stuck open. *tr

Driving at 55 mph, car jerked and the gas pedal failed to respond. coasted over to the side of the road. turned vehicle off. restarted and started driving again with out problem. same thing happened again except with a large cement truck behind me. the ford died and there was no shoulder on the side of the road. the cement truck was able to go into the oncoming traffic lane to miss me. the escape did the same scenario twice on the way to the garage. ( with out the cement truck) the problem was diagnosed as the throttle body malfunction. *tr

I was driving at 60mph on the highway, the car suddenly lost power, i pulled over quickly and it was barely running, the engine was sputtering. i shut it off waited a few minutes and then started, it worked after. that problem then happened 3 more times in the next 20min. i immediately took it to a garage and the error code showed electronic throttle body. *tr

I was driving to work and my car started to jerk. then my power train light came on and my car totally stopped on me in the middle of the road. i took it to the shop that day and the told me it was my throttle body. my warranty didn't cover it, so i had to pay over 300 dollars for a new part. *tr

While driving at highway speeds 65 mph , my cars engine suddenly stopped running . this has happened more than once at different speeds. nearly caused a pile up. *tr

While driving down the interstate, the car started to de-accelerate. the accelerator did not respond and i went into limp mode. car was towed to repair shop. it started right up and no problem was found - didn't register on the computer and wrench warning light went off. ten days later, the car did the same thing, this time in the city. different repair shop diagnosed the problem as the throttle body. ford dealers in the area told me there were 3700 of these parts on back order! gee, maybe there is a problem with massive numbers needing to be replaced! a recall needs to be initiated. my incident on the interstate almost resulted in an accident. *tr

Driving along 5-lane interstate at approximately 70-75 mph when my 2010 ford escape's engine essentially cut out on me. a yellow wrench light came on as well. i avoided several passing cars and semis on this very busy thoroughfare outside our nation's capital and luckily found safety on the right shoulder. after powering down the vehicle, thinking that it may be a computer error, i restarted and everything seemed find. again, no more than a couple miles down the road the same issue happened. found a ford dealer eventually and replaced the throttle body. $600 out of pocket cost for something that should be under powertrain warranty. *tr

Vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly lost all power while driving on a major thoroughfare, almost resulting in a rear end collision. vehicle has now done that three times and is not being driven as it is unsafe to operate until repaired. ford states that it is a known issue with the throttle body but cannot obtain the replacement part for one to two months, rendering vehicle unusable and unsafe. *tr
