I was driving on highway (with two children under 4 in the car), luckily it was stop and go traffic. the car completely and without warning lost power and i could no longer accelerate. i was able to put hazards on and pull over to the break-down lane (across three lanes of traffic), turn the car off and back on again. it restarted immediately. (weather was warm- mid 60s, no humidity, i had driven the car earlier in the day and had been driving for about 20 minutes. the car is well maintained and had recently had an oil change.) *tr
Traveling about 6 pm (rush hour heavy traffic) 3 lane expressway when car would no longer accelerate. had to coast over to the left shoulder since we were in the left passing lane. the left shoulder was not as wide as the right shoulder and we felt the situation was very dangerous we stayed in the car with our seatbelts on and called for road service (aaa). we did not receive help for two hours. just purchased this car two months before this incident - pre owned certified by dealership. can't understand why ford waits until the part fails before replacing it. i feel strongly it should have been replaced as part of the "certification" process. there were no warning lights or indications this was going to happen before it happened. after the car "died", a wrench light appeared, but not until after we had coasted to a stop. if we had been in the middle lane instead of the lane next to the shoulder, i feel certain we would have been involved in a high speed possible multiple car accident as traffic was heavy and fast. this is so very wrong! thank you for making this complaint possible. i hope it helps result in a recall by ford right away so no one has to get hurt or even die. *tr
This is the third incident in two days, i'm driving along when i take my foot of the gas pedal and coast, the engine dies, the dash shows the battery and oil light. you can still steer, but the car slows down drastically with the engine not running, i had someone almost rear end me, because i slowed down so much. all incidents were the same, but the first time it happened it was very scary because you didn't know what was happening and you didn't know what to do. the car will start back up if you park it or put it in neutral, but i was in the middle of an intersection the third time, stopped traffic cars were honking at me. this is a huge safety issue, taking it in tomorrow to get it fixed, should be a recall. *tr
Entering i-85 going west at approx. 60mph. approx 1/4 mile the car lost power as i was entering the freeway. traffic was merging onto the freeway around me and i put on my blinker to get to the side of the freeway to call a tow truck. it was very dangerous. the repair shop told me it was a throttle body issue. *tr
While driving the engine started misfiring and idling rough. vehicle lost power, would not accelerate and i rolled to the side of the road where i restarted the car and it drove normally. *tr
I was driving at approximately 25 mph, and suddenly the car began to sputter. the gas pedal was non responsive and the car was surging forward. i pulled over to the side of the road and turned the car off. about 5 mins later i turned it back on and the engine and throttle lights came on. after a few seconds the throttle light went off, but the engine light stayed on. i then tried to drive the car home, but after about two blocks the same thing happened again. this happened several more times until i could get the car to a safe place and out of the road. the car is still in the parking lot where i left it and i am currently trying to find out my towing and repair options. *tr
When traveling at approx 50 mph, the engine made an automatic de acceleration, with the rpms going to 1000. even when stepping on the gas pedal, the rpms did not change and the car came to a very slow speed just over idle speed. a wrench symbol appeared in the indicator lights. i placed in park and turned off the car. when restarting, the wrench symbol went away and the car drove normal for about 20 miles until the same thing happened. it appears that something in the computer brains is telling the engine to shut down. this happened a few more times over weekend and thankfully i was not in heavy traffic and was able to pull off to the shoulder. today is may 4, 2014 and tomorrow i plan to take the car into ford dealership on sterling virginia. i have read recent complaints from ford escape owners that match exactly my problem. this is obviously unsafe and should be reported as a re call. *tr
On dec.31 at approximately 2 p.m. i was driving south on citrus ave. i was going 55 mph and my vehicle started losing speed. i moved to the side of the road. i turned off the ignition and when i restarted the car it ran as normal. prior to that, on several occasions upon starting from a stop i had noticed faster acceleration than the amount of pressure i was applying to the gas pedal. *tr
While driving approx 45-60 mph wrench icon and engine icon lights came on vehicle stopped accelerating everything else worked and engine was still running, gas pedal did not accelerate or raise rpm's. pulled to side of road put in park and turned engine off, vehicle started with hesitation wrench light did not appear, engine light remained on though vehicle was drivable again. problem happened repetitively the rest of the 45 min drive home with wrench light appearing and acceleration ceasing had to pull over and restart numerous times. engine icon remains lit. *tr
I was accelerating to get on the i-5 south in carlsbad ca when suddenly the wrench warning light came on and immediately after that the vehicle lost all throttle, pushed the gas pedal down and nothing happened. i was in the third lane and had to coast back to an almost non- existent shoulder and we were nearly struck by two vehicles in the process. i am taking the vehicle back to the ford dealer where it was purchased, we were recently there for a check engine light that was diagnosed to be "no problems". i do not feel confident or safe in this vehicle and will not allow my wife and child to ride as passengers in it again. i am putting the vehicle up for sale and not going to purchase the 2014 i had planned to buy as a second car. just a note, my co- worker has a 2011 and had the same issue four times with one nearly causing a head-on collision in an intersection. this far along, do people have to die before this is fixed? *tr
2010 ford escape. consumer writes in regards to vehicle throttle body issues. *smd the consumer she received a letter regarding the throttle body, but didn't think it sounded too serious. the letter stated engine power and vehicle speed would be reduced. the consumer stated she had the misfortune of experiencing the problem on march 16, 2014. the speed was not just reduced, but the gas pedal was inoperable and the vehicle just coasted to a stop, as if she had run out of gas. all the while, the engine was running, although not smoothly and all the lights were in working order. minutes later, the wrench light illuminated on the dashboard. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that the vent controls failed without warning. the contact was unable to use the air conditioning and heating function. years before, the dealer replaced the power steering control module and the ic module, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body sensor and blower motor failed. the contact later experienced an extremely strong vibration in the steering wheel and the power steering warning light flashed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for further inspection to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the dealer replaced the parts. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 97,411.
While driving at 55mph on road. i lost all power to gas pedal the car was hard to steer to the side of the road. put car in park shut car off .waited a few minutes an started car up. it ran this happens 2 or 3 times on the same day then it might not happen again for a week or two this a ongoing problem that ford should place a safety recall not on soft customer satisfaction program#13no3 this is a serious safety issue. *tr
Was driving down the road when almost all of the power from the engine was lost. engine was running at an idle. would not respond to the throttle/gas pedal. i managed to get it to limp close to the dealership and get it towed the rest of the way. happened just today and the dealership called and said that it is indeed the throttle body. they said it wasn't covered under my power train warranty and they are replacing it for a cost of roughly $450. *tr
Was driving lost all power at first then was able to move at 2 mph when gas pedal was fully depressed, car started to shake. heard loud pop then engine light came on dash. i was able to creep along to get out of moving traffic. drove at the side of the road until i tried to get into a parking area which required me to make a left turn with traffic coming waited and waited then from a complete stop i make the turn into the lot which has a slight incline i was flooring the gas pedal still with out any power of more than 2 mph worried i would slip back into moving traffic. parked called a tow truck. turned off engine went into work. came back out of work restarted car no check engine light and everything seem to work fine after that. frightened i could have caused a serious accident for other and myself. *tr
I own a 2010 ford escape. i was driving approximately 40 mph up a slight incline on a two lane road at 6:30 am in the dark when suddenly the vehicle jerked and would not accelerate. the wrench warning icon illuminated. while on the decline of the road i was able to coast into the first lane and into a break down lane and into a parking lot at a very slow rate of speed because once you applied the brakes and slowed down you could not regain any speed. i shut the engine off and was able to restart the vehicle without failure within a few mintues but the vehicle was not running right. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician stated that the throttle body would have to be replaced and the serpentine belt. the vehicle was repaired at the dealer. i cannot believe this is not a safety recall issue for ford. i could have been hit multiple times on rte 1 trying to get my vehicle over two lanes of traffic to the side of the road. *tr
Driving on highway using cruise control setting at 65 mph, when all of sudden vehicle began to slow down and stall on me. i had to pull over on the side of the road because the vehicle was shaking and i could not give it power to stay with traffic speed. i got to the side put the vehicle in park and it still was shaken so i turned it off. i then waited a minute or so and started the vehicle back up even though it was hesitating to start. once back on i drove with my hazard on at a speed of 50 mph. *tr
Vehicle's engine cuts out and i lose control. it has happened numerous times and one time the engine shut down three times during a short trip of ten miles. i have to turn the key off and start the engine again. fortunately we don't travel very fast here. *tr
This is the 2nd time the engine has stalled. first time was oct. 31st, 2013. driving in residential street and acceleration decreases, car shutters, and wrench light comes on along with other indicators. coasts to side of road. after about 2-3 minutes, starts up and able to drive home (approximately 2 miles). *tr
Vehicle failed to accelerate, lost power and it was necessary to coast to a stop on the side of the interstate. vehicle continued to idle very roughly. when i depressed the gas pedal the motor would not rev up and remained at an idle. necessary to tow vehicle to dealership and i was informed it would be necessary to replace the throttle body. *tr
I was driving south on hwy 53, doing 55 mph when the car jumped out of gear. the engine was still running at idlespeed, but when i depressed the gas pedal nothing happened. also the wrench light and the engine light where both on. i had to pull off the side of the road to avoid traffic and shut off the engine. i waited a minute and it started right back up with only the engine light on. this was the 5th time this happened in 2 days and was the same each time. i drove straight to the dealer where i had bought it and they did a check and retrieved p2111 in koec, then performed etb internal ids pinpoint test. etb or throttle body failed test. they replaced the throttle body and motor asy, which is a known problem, and charged me $432.65. i believe ford should have replaced this at no cost, since this is a known problem. *tr
I was driving along at 35-40 mph, in traffic, and the gas pedal completely quit! and a little yellow wrench showed up on my dashboard. no other lights showed up. a complete failure of the gas pedal ensued. i had to coast through traffic to the side of the road. i found that if i turned off engine and restarted car, the "wrench" went away and i had power until the next time it happened. mechanic said this was "limp mode." i took it into dealer but they could not get the "code" to determine the problem. over two weeks this became more frequent and after the 4th time, the "check engine" light came on. they finally could get the code and it was a total throttle body failure! i stopped driving the car and am waiting for the part. at this time, i have an appointment for repair on monday, dec 30th. this repair will cost me approx $200-$400 dollars! i'm very upset, of course, but thankful that this didn't cause an accident. i am 64 years old and a single woman! *tr
Driving on four lane road when lost engine power to idle. accelerator pedal non-responsive. drove vehicle four miles back to home. had to restart engine seven times to return home. plugged in code reader, it stated the throttle body actuator sticking closed. *tr
Was driving to work and car stalled. hit the gas and nothing happened. pulled over on shoulder, turned car off, and restarted. immediately took car to dealership and fuel throttle body malfunction was diagnosed as the cause. can i get a refund, as this seems to be a common problem? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. while driving 40 mph, an unknown warning light illuminated and the vehicle speed independently decreased to 10 mph. the contact stated that the steering wheel was difficult to maneuver and required excessive force. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic but the failure was unable to be duplicated. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000. updated 10/06/15*lj updated 11/08/2017*cn
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where they stated that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 97,000.
While driving vehicle it will rev high and then stall while in traffic. starts back up fine and then immediately stalls out again. this has happened three different times in the past 3 weeks. *tr
Driving on freeway, at about 65mph, when all of the sudden the engine stalled and power was cut dramatically from the engine. unable to control speed and instantly started stopping. had to pull over sharply and unsafely on the side of an on-ramp narrowly having car behind us miss us. turned off vehicle and had to wait about 20 seconds before restarting the car. it then worked ok. happened several times on one trip of about 20 miles. took to a dealer and they diagnosed it as the throttle body needing to be replaced. *tr
Our 2010 ford escape has had the exact problem described in the nhtsa case number pe 13003. our vehicle has 43,000 miles on it and driving to work on a fast moving city street at approx 45-50 mph and the car lost all throttle control and went into the described "limp mode", no warning or check engine lights came on. we had a very difficult time controlling the car and getting it off the road while trying to dodge traffic. limp mode does not describe the available power. at 900 rpm you can walk faster than the car will drive... the transmission is also acting as an engine brake and slowing the car even faster so i popped it into neutral and was able to coast to the side of the road. we turned off the ignition and restarted and the car started fine. put it in gear and accelerated to approx 20 mph and it went into limp mode again and this time the small wrench light came on in the dash. a gearbox or transmission problem? luckily we were still on the side of the road so we again turned off the car and restarted to reset (wrench light went out) and it worked fine for the next 14 miles as we were going to the ford dealer. just as we were arriving it did it a third time, this time the check engine light came on and they were able to retrieve the dtc code of 2112 and diagnosed a defective throttle body assembly. the service manager was not aware of any recall and charged us $589 dollars for the repair (part, labor, diagnostic test and calibration of the computer). we have been the only owners of this car and it has had all of its normal service done. at 43k miles it is, for all purposes, still a new car. lucky for us it happened on city streets and not at highway speeds. hopefully ford will issues a recall on these to repair them. *tr
i have a 2010 ford escape. while driving home last night (11/19/2013) my car basically died while i was in motion. i applied pressure to the gas petal and nothing happened. the rpms bounced around and the wrench light came on. i was able to coast to safety. i put the car in park and engaged my emergency flashers. i took the key out of the ignition and waited a minute. after starting the car again, everything was ok. the problem again happened not 12 hours later in the morning (11/20/2013) while driving to work. i hate to think of what could of happened had my two young children been in the car with me and this happened on the highway. my car is at the shop currently getting repaired, however, i am not stuck with a payment that is a know issue and potential safety problem. *tr
I had just stopped at a stop sign. when i accelerated to go forward, the car died. i pushed it to the side of the road and waited a few minutes. the car started right up. quite frightening. i was fortunate there was minimal traffic on the road when it died. *tr
At night, while stopped on red traffic light waiting for change to green, the vehicle stalls an shut off. did not start right over until a while. all dashboard panel lights were on. after 45 minutes tried to start it and it just move very, very slow and did not accelerate until it died again a 100 feet farther. we call road assistance to take us home in a towing truck. at the other day we call the towing truck again to take the suv to the dealer since it was in warranty, when we start it before leaving it was working fine. the service tech at ford tell us that probably it is the throttle body since other people has been having the same issue. they test it and they say that nothing is wrong... my warranty is about to expire and i think that they are playing us to take the unit home and when it happen again charge us for the cost of the part... $$$$ very expensive!!! this is a hazardous issue since it can happen while driving it can cause an accident or lost of life. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle and took it to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician stated that the throttle body would need to be replaced. the vehicle was scheduled for repairs. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 42,000.
I was driving down highway in evening heavy traffic with cruise control set at 60mph, when all acceleration cut off. cars behind me had to hit their brakes just not to crash into me. this was extremely dangerous situation. i hit the gas peddle, both the engine did not accelerate and i had to pull over to the right and put my 2010 ford escape into park, at which point the engine was shaking violently and the wrench light was on. shut off engine, waited 1-2 mins and restarted engine. chuckled at the beginning, but then ran normally, pulled onto highway again and drove home. i was to anxious to try the cruise control again. drove home and researched the problem on line. found thousands of ppl describing on different web sites the exact same story. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle would not accelerate. the wrench warning icon illuminated. the contact shut the engine off and was able to restart the vehicle without failure. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician stated that the throttle body would have to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 33,000.
While traveling at a relatively low traveling speed the vehicle seems to lose power and i can no longer accelerate. the tool light/check engine light will come on and i can coast to a stop. once i stop the vehicle i turn it off. when i restart the vehicle it hesitates for approx 6 seconds and then turns over/restarts with no further problems. this has occurred four times since 11/6/13. *tr
While traveling down the highway at approximately 70 mph, the car suddenly loses power. the vehicle becomes unresponsive to throttle controls. vehicle must be pulled off of the highway, onto the shoulder. the vehicle key must be cycled to reset the system. being an active investigation, there should be known cases of the electronic throttle body failing on these cars. it is a safety concern, and the drive by wire design of the vehicle does not allow a throttle body to be cleaned. *tr
I was driving on the highway with my cruise control on when the cruise control shut off and a wrench light came on. the car stopped excelling and i had to cruise from the fast lane over 2 lanes to the side of the road. once to the side i turned my car off waited a minute and then turned it back on. it turned on fine and ran fine from then on. i of course called ford immediately but it was after hours and i left a message. after about an hour of driving it began to shake my foot when i pushed on the accelerator. prior to this i did feel some slipping or surges every so often when i was accelerating as if it was having trouble shifting. when i brought it to ford it was decided that my throttle body needed to be replaced. this was done fast and was covered under my extended warranty it was to be fixed for just my deductible of $100. all fine and dandy until i read the reviews that this has been going on for a while and multiple people have been affected. *tr
While driving down the road at about 45mph, the car stopped acknowledging that i was pushing the gas pedal. the car steadily slowed down, regardless of how much i pushed on the gas pedal. i ended up veering off into a parking lot and shutting the car off. i waited about 5 minutes and restarted it. it acted normal and i resumed my driving. it has happened about 5 times since then as well. thankfully i haven't been on the highway and have had a place to pull off the road. *tr
Stopped at stop sign, pressed accelerator and engine rpms did not increase. no engine response from accelerator. turned off engine. restarted and the throttle/engine worked normally. *tr
I was traveling west on i-10 from tallahassee, fl intending to go to pensacola, fl. i was driving the 70 mph posted speed limit. as i neared exit 192 @ quincy, fl i heard a noise from under the hood that sounded like a clunk. the car's engine dropped below 1000 rpm and gradually slowed down. i pulled off to the emergency lane. the escape was towed to havana ford in havana, fl on sat., nov. 2, 2013. the service dept. opened monday and i was informed that the throttle body broke. i had the throttle body and gasket replaced. *tr
I was driving into work on a 5 lane, heavy traffic road going about 45 mph when my car suddenly lost all of its engine power. the radio, lights were still working, the car simply wouldn't accelerate and actually slowed down considerably to a point where i was basically stopped on the road. i was able to coast into a turning lane so i was at least out of the main traffic lane. i turned the car off, started it again and as i prepared to make a left turn to get into a parking lot i lost all acceleration again and barely made it out of the intersection. i was able to put the car in neutral and coast it into a parking lot. my car required a tow to a local dealership and the issue was an electronic throttlebody failure. i'm extremely thankful that i didn't make it onto the freeway because if i stopped in that traffic i'm not sure i would have been able to avoid a major accident. *tr
On highway approx. 5 miles into journey when vehicle suddenly stops with a violent jerk throwing all belongings into the floor. all lights on dash come on vehicle remained on. . pressing gas pedal but does not engage. slowly idle over to the side of the road. turned vehicle off and restarted. let run for 5 minutes and drove 300 ft to suitable pull off. orange tool light stayed on in left lower corner of dash after a sluggish start. drove approx. 20 miles to work at night without any further problems. in morning on the way home, vehicle started ok. let run 5 minutes to warm up. traveled approx. 3 miles going 35 mph when vehicle suddenly stops again , vehicle remained on. coasted off road. turned off vehicle and let set for 5 minutes again. vehicle sluggishly started with orange engine light staying on the dash. drove approx. 2 miles at 30 mph when vehicle does the same thing. coasted into parking lot. turned off and checked outside vehicle for any leakage problems . none noted. restarted sluggishly. traveled approx. 22 miles to home without any other problems. husband took to dealership. they checked it and knew beforehand what the problem was because of a history of problems with this vehicle. replaced throttle body assembly mileage at 51814 at a cost of $372.61 parts and labor. *tr
Driving about 2 miles from my home the auto began to be sluggish. then it would only go about 5 to10 miles an hour and then barely going at all. auto was towed to mechanic and diagnosed that the throttle body was the issue and it was replaced. *tr
As i was driving down the interstate with the cruise control set at 70mph, the vehicle turned the cruise control off and decelerated almost immediately to 60mph which caused an uncomfortable thrashing forward of myself and my 2 children. we had our seat belts on, so we were not injured. the vehicle continued to lose power, so i pulled off the highway and placed the vehicle in park and turned off the engine. i noticed a little wrench had appeared in the left corner of my dash display. i looked up this symbol in my owners manual. i then decided to go ahead and try to continue driving as i was a good 75+ miles from home and i was in a very remote area. when i started the engine, i noticed the service engine light came on and did not go back out. i proceeded down the interstate approximately 2 miles before the vehicle did the same thing. this time i attempted to accelerate and with the gas pedal to the floor, had no success. the car just continued to lose speed, so again , i pulled off the highway and this time i let the vehicle proceed as far as it could without applying the brake. as the car was nearly stopped, it started to shake as if it were about to shut off. i turned off the engine and again, restarted after a short break and was able to make it the rest of the way home. *tr
The vehicle was traveling on the expressway when suddenly the car seemed to "stall" although it never actually stalled out, but rpms dropped to 800-1000 and would not respond to any throttle action . after turning the car off, waiting and starting again, the problem then resurfaced about a half mile later. i was again able to pull off, restart the car and continue normally. once in a safe location (work), i was able to connect a obd-ii reader to the car and found the following: p2112: tac system stuck closed running a google search of the above error gave many many articles pointing to a throttle body issue. this issue was preceded by the car randomly stalling out (this time actual stalls). these happened at very random intervals for approx. 2-3 weeks before the expressway issue. *tr
While driving the car, the engine suddenly shut down. after coming to a stop, was able to restart the car but the check engine light was illuminated. took the car to a repair shop and they diagnosed the problem as being the throttle body plate. we have been told this is a common problem on these vehicles but ford has not issued a recall for this problem. this is a very expensive repair that we feel should be paid by ford. *tr
It is most likely the throttle body of this vehicle it drives normal than cuts off in traffic, restarts drives normal, and you never know when it cuts off again, extremely concerned that an incident may occur. *tr
