Recently reported ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING problems on 2010 Ford Escape

For the first time the engine completely shut off while driving, i was turning left onto my mother's street, going approximately 20/25 mph. there was no warning, the vehicle just shut off while driving. i was able to turn the car off, put the vehicle in park, and restart the car without a problem. it happened again about 4 weeks later and again, i was going slow as i was in my parking garage at work, approximately 15/20 mph when my car shut off while driving without any warning signs. i put the car in park, restarted and started driving again. as i was approaching another level in the parking garage, the same thing happened-the car shut off. i was able to put it in park and start driving. this is a huge safety issue as cars have almost rear ended me and i drive with my 2 young sons in the car. previous to these incidences i took my car to ford for recalls regarding the throttle body, which can apparently cause this problem to occur. *tr

Immediately after having two items fixed that were recalled on my vehicle, (throttle body etc), the check engine light came on. i thought it was something done while fixing recall items; however, the ford dealership service dept advised me that it was not due to the recall items fixed. also it would cost $527.00 to fix, as the flap inside the nozzle/flex fuel pipe was not closing properly. i showed my anger and disappointment - which at that point, the service manager advised that my car had a white funnel that they would use to try to undo the flap. it worked. why in the world did they try to get me to pay $527 without first trying the funnel. another client in the service dept advised me to do the funnel thing before the service guy did. he has had the same issues. as of this morning, however, the check engine light is on again. i am going to try the funnel first, before i take it to my personal mechanic. i feel assured that i am not the first ford escape 2010 owner that has experienced this issue. please check into recalling this problem. thank you very much. *tr

While making a left turn, the vehicle stalled and went into limp mode. turned ignition off, waited 10 minutes, then cranked vehicle, and it ran normally...updated 12/04/14 *bf

I was driving on a highway and the wrench symbol appeared on the dash. then power was cut to the engine and i coasted to the side of the road. restarting the car removed the wrench and i was able to drive home. the exact same incident occurred again four days later on 5/29/14. *tr

Vehicle loses power while going down the highway. it stalls out and when you make a turn it cuts off with no warning. it surges while traveling. *tr

While driving down the interstate my escape suddenly lost power and slowed to around 5 mph. i pulled to the shoulder, placed the car in park, shut it off, waited a few minutes, then started it and continued on my way. this has happened two more times since, both while traveling 30 mph in town. i followed the same procedure and was able to continue on my way. i believe this to be an issue with the throttle body, as i have consulted my local mechanic. he confirmed that he has seen a few escapes with the same issue. *tr

My 2010 ford escape began stalling out from a stopped position around the beginning of february. this was after driving approximately 65 mph on the highway and coming to a stop at the exit ramp light. this has, thus far, occurred twice off the highway. (and once in a very quick, crowded, dangerous off ramp intersection.) other incidents include multiple times stalling from a complete stop after driving a period of time (approximately 10-15 minutes), and multiple times stalling out at approximately 3-5 mph while in a parking lot. i now have to keep my foot on the pedal while idling at a light. another problem is that the escape is surging when slowing before a stop. the first incident occurred in the beginning of january 2014 and has progressively increased. *tr

Vehicle failed, as it stopped an alarm lit up, showing a wrench, diagnostic showed a trottle failure. it has happened (5) times since dec 04, 2013. last time, it failed after seventeen (17) miles run. when vehicle is turned off, the alarm light goes off and the vehicle runs again.

The car stalled while driving. the first time it stalled i was driving 65 mph with children in the car with me. after i came to a stop, the car restarted and after driving 2 more minutes it stalled again at 45 mph. after the second stall the engine light came on. i had a diagnostic report done and the report said "throttle actuator control system-stuck closed" and "detected the throttle plate is at a lower angle than commanded." i hope this is resolved quickly. it is not covered under my warranty. *tr

I was traveling west on i-10 from tallahassee, fl intending to go to pensacola, fl. i was driving the 70 mph posted speed limit. as i neared exit 192 @ quincy, fl i heard a noise from under the hood that sounded like a clunk. the car's engine dropped below 1000 rpm and gradually slowed down. i pulled off to the emergency lane. the escape was towed to havana ford in havana, fl on sat., nov. 2, 2013. the service dept. opened monday and i was informed that the throttle body broke. i had the throttle body and gasket replaced. *tr

I was traveling @ about 40 mph when it sounded & felt like the engine quit. there was a wide shoulder so, i pulled to the side of the road. the engine was still running but running poorly and wouldn't rev up over about 1000 rpm. the check engine light came on along with an orange "wrench" light. i switched the engine off, restarted it, and it ran fine for about 1/2 mile. then, the same thing happened again, and again, and again. in the next 2 miles the same thing had happened 3 more times. after almost getting rear-ended by a ram truck the last time it quit, i pulled into a parking lot and called my mechanic who came and towed it to his garage. almost $400 later, my mechanic had replaced the electronic throttle assembly. he told me the ford dealer parts person said he knew the part number by heart because they had replaced so many of these parts. *tr

This is the second time this has happened. i came to a stop. the car shuts off completely on its own and was unable to start it up for a period of time in either park or drive. this also happened at approx. 7000 miles. each time i take it to the shop, they are unable to replicate or find any errors within the system, so they refuse to correct or try further diagnostics to replicate the issue. *tr

Vehicle stalls at any speed. after shutdown, vehicle restarts and runs fine for a minute or two and then stalls again. *tr

The problem started on july 09, 2013. my wife was dropping our kids off at daycare and a summer program when the car just lost all power couldn't accelerate or anything. the vehicle could just coast. we have never had any problems with the vehicle before, so i told her to try and shut down the vehicle to restart it. there were no warning lights and it worked fine. then after dropping the kids off it happened to more times to her on her way to work. after i got off of work, i picked up the vehicle and drove it around non-busy roadways to see if it could happen to me, and it did. i immediately dropped it off at a service center close by. i am extremely concerned about these incidents after looking online and finding out that this is not a random incident. it is happening to many people. something in the throttle body goes bad causing the vehicle to go into something that people are calling "limp mode". my wife was driving at highway speeds with vehicles behind her and my children in the car. this situation could have been devastating and i am glad that it wasn't. i do not want it to be devastating for anyone else either though. i believe it should be looked at closely. after talking to the parts department of a ford dealer, it seems that ford has recognized the problem by changing the part. the problem is that it only helps if you change the part. i believe that ford should be doing something about this to ensure nobody is injured badly or worse. *tr

6/26/13 - driving in the right lane on interstate 81 in pennsylvania at approximately 65 miles per hour and engine completely lost power. a large truck was behind me and i immediately put my four way flashers on. luckily there were no vehicles in the left lane and the truck changed lanes. additional vehicles were coming upon my vehicle quickly so i pulled over on the berm at about 40 mph and applied the brakes and stopped. turned off the car and restarted and problem went away and continued on trip. problem happened again the next day 6/27/13 driving on interstate 81 at approximately 65 mph. same problem where engine completely lost power. i put on my four way flashers and approaching traffic started moving to the left lane. pulled over to the berm and shut the car off. restarted and tried to pull out. problem happened again. shutoff and restarted and was then able to pull out and finish trip. this is the fourth time in less than a month that this has occurred. after the first time i contacted ford and ordered a new throttle body. part is on back order and keep being told next week. ford made me give them a credit card to order the part and has charged my account but has not given me the part. *tr

Engine simply stopped operating in midst of traffic and immediately decelerated....then resumed operation but vehicle unable to move faster than a crawl....then stopped again....then resumed again. was able to exit freeway and reach gas station. turned off vehicle and called aaa for emergency road assistance. vehicle was towed to ford dealership. ford replaced the throttle body and motor asy which was on backorder for 2 weeks. today, december 26 2013 the symptom has resurfaced. the engine simply stopped in the midst of traffic. was able to pull out of the flow of traffic. car restarted and was able to continue driving home. *tr

My 2010 ford escape nearly stalled (slowed all the way down) and i was able to pull over and shut it off. it happened 5 times in two days. i called the dealership and my car is not under warranty and there is no recall. during those 5 instances, i was driving at various speeds when my car slowed to a near stop. a couple times it happened in the parking lot (slow) and three times on the road between 45 and 55 miles an hour. all i know is i'm too scared to drive it as it is unsafe and i have kids. not safe!!! *tr

As vehicle was proceeding forward from a stop onto a four lane road with the speed limit of 35 mph, it rolled forward and no power was provided. no warning lights prior to this. the throttle control / power train light came on and we were only able to go approximately 20 -30 yards onto the shoulder attempting to go around the corner and up a hill the vehicle was unable to do this we rolled back to the shoulder then turned the car off restarted and the check engine light appeared and were able to get the car up the hill and home. car was towed to ford dealership where it was diagnosed as a failed throttle body which was then replaced.

First incident: 05/03/2013: ac stopped working properly. car sputtered. stopped. would not accelerate. dash lights came on: battery, wrench, etc. lost power. then would accelerate. pulled over and had towed. dealer ford service department inspected. replaced bad floor actuator motor - cc42.. fixed under warranty as owner was only 3 weeks out of 3 year warranty, with a mileage of only 34,646 miles. (invoice receipt: test codes performed by dealer: p2111, p2112, monitor pids. oasis-ssm 32170. replaced throttle body, reset kam, cc42.) second incident: 11/17/2013: similar to 05/03/2013 incident. ac stopped cooling. turned off car. tried to start and dash lights came on. car acted like it would start, sputtered and would not start back up. waited 30 minutes. car started back up. left parked, as felt dangerous situation if were to occur on interstate. will have towed to my mechanic for inspection. why, if dealer replaced actuator motor 6 months earlier would same situation occur? there must be another issue causing the actuator motor failure other than the actual motor failure. *tr

I was coming to a stop at a light and the vehicle stalled. it was a dangerous situation. i assumed this was a random event. car started right up and no check engine code light came on etc. *tr

While driving on the parkway in traffic the vehicle lost propulsion. i was able to coast to the shoulder of the road before being hit by cars able to travel the speed limit. this has now happened several times both on the parkway and other roads. *tr

Loss of power - vehicle stops at random - obd code p2111. *tr

Less than two weeks after purchasing the ford escape, i was headed east from south kingstown, ri to ma on rt 79/24 at 6:30 a.m. driving at approximately 60 miles an hour, without any warning, the car came to a complete stop and the wrench light appeared on the control panel. i was without a cell phone. in the distance i could see an off ramp and was about to walk. i successfully restarted the car, exited the highway, to return to ri. after driving approximately 25 miles, the car again, without any warning, came to a complete stop in seekonk and the wrench light again came on the control panel. again, i restarted the car and proceeded cautiously to south kingstown, when the car again stopped in wakefield, and the wrench light indicating a power train failure appeared on the control panel. i immediately contacted the dealer where the car was purchased. it still had a month left on the original warranty. upon inspection the service department indicated that they could not find anything wrong. they told me that unless the problem could be recreated, they would not replace any parts. because it was labor day weekend, i had to wait until tuesday and took the car to a ford dealer in narragansett ri, where they kept the car for three days. they couldn't replicate the incident and said that unless they could simulate it, ford would not pay to replace any parts. *tr the consumer stated the vehicle has been to the dealer four times, to try and rectify the stalling issue, but to no avail. updated ivoq 10/22/12

As i was driving, the engine just stopped, i tried to give it gas, but it wouldn't go. the vehicle slowed down and i had to pull over. the wrench indicator light was on. i turned the vehicle off, then on again, and the wrench light was off, and the vehicle was fine. this has happened about a dozen times since the initial incident. *tr

I was driving and the car just lost power. i had just exited the hwy. i pulled over to the side of the road put the car in park and turned the key back off and the car restarted. then this happened again about 5 minutes later. then two weeks later is happened again same situation. it happened about 3- 4 times. we thought maybe it was bad gas -- so we refilled with premium gas....two weeks later it happened again 3 times in a row. on a major highway -- it was very scary..i took it to the dealer they found nothing - did not charge me and there was no report that i even took the car in to them .3 weeks after that ..it happened constantly but i was on a trip away from home -- it started back up every time ..i it happened 9 time in one day. 3 times on the interstate going about 60 mph -- it was very upsetting..when i got home i took it to the dealer and they said it was the abs and it would cost 800$+ -- i told them to keep the car and drive it until the issue i had happened to them -- they had it 2- 3 days and it finally happened to them when they had the diagnostics on the car...it was the throttle sensor ...they charged me $400+ and it is now fixed--my sister had an escape an did have the same issue -- my 83 year old mother has the same car and i would not want this to happen to her! thanks *tr

While driving down the road the escape just shut off without warning. i put it in park and it started again. i took it to the dealership and they couldn't find a reason. it happened again on the 8th of april when driving to work i just got off the highway to an exit ramp and it shut off again. i put it in park and it started back up and shut off again just over a mile down the road. i have taken it to the dealership and they can't find anything wrong with the escape. *tr

While make a moving left hand turn... engine stopped running. as i came out of the turn & started to try to accelerate i quickly realized i had no engine power... drifted for about 50 yards & pulled over to the side of the street. tried turning engine on... vehicle started right up. went on my way. the next day i took the escape straight down to our ford dealership. ford ran a bunch of tests but could not find anything wrong. i am afraid to let my wife drive the vehicle now (her vehicle) because of this situation. i have been driving since i was 11 years old. i am now nearly 40. i have never experienced anything like this situation. i looked all around the steering wheel/etc. trying to figure out if there was some way i could have turned off the engine (besides the keys)... i cannot see any other possibility... the vehicle was still in "drive" & the fuel tank was more than half full. the vehicle key in the ignition was still turned on when this happened. i cannot say for sure that the power steering was absent when the engine initially turned off... did i still have a very small amount of engine power?... i do not know... but i could not accelerate. please contact me guys if you can help me with this... thank you. *js

At stop or idle, engine surges, hesitates, stalls, smell gas, check engine light comes on. took escape to dealer. dealer says its the purge valve and evap canister. purge valve failed and raw gas filled evap canister. dealer says its out of warranty, there's nothing they can do. this has been a know problem since 2006, tsb bulletin 11-3-22, part # 9u5z-9c915h-purge valve, part # 9r3z-9c985-b evap canister. ford has done nothing to correct the issue. they replaced the damaged parts with the same parts with no fix for the spillage of raw fuel, on the ground, in the air, on the vehicle. this raw fuel situation could cause a fire or explosion at any time. yet ford says its not an emission issue and the vehicle is out of warranty. the ford forums on the internet are full of complaints for the same raw fuel spillage. does someone have to die before ford admits they have a design problem and fixes it??? this same issue is also related to the 2010-12 fusion. *tr

Was stopped in traffic - traffic began to move, i pressed on accelerator and proceeded. hit about 5 mph and engine lost power completely and steering wheel locked up - radio and a/c remained on. battery and oil warning lamps on dash illuminated. was able to put vehicle in neutral and move to side of road. turned ignition off and was able to re-start vehicle as normal. proceeded to my destination as normal. *tr

Driving off road up a steep incline (40-45 degrees), the vehicle came to a halt. there wasn't any power going to the tires even though i had the accelerator pedal to the floor. the engine rpm would only rev up to about 1200 rpm. it felt as if there was a disconnect between the transmission and the engine as there was no power being delivered to the tires. the tires did not loose traction or spin either. what was especially unsafe about this is that it was extremely hazardous backing down the steep hill i had tried to ascend. i was trying to back down slowly by using the brake, but many times the brakes would lock up causing the vehicle to shift and slide sometimes sideways which could have caused the vehicle to roll. i tried to go up the hill again to no avail. this vehicle is used by the us forest service in which many times the vehicle is required to go of road on forest service roads. there is a section in the owner's manual about off road driving, but it makes no mention that the vehicle should not be driven up steep inclines.

S10 direct reply-letter to the administrator from congressman stearns on behalf of constituent re her ordeal while driving her 2010 ford escape *tgw chemicals were discharged throughout the interior of the vehicle. due to the inhalation of the chemicals the consumer was hospitalized for an extended period of time. the doctors informed the consumer that her condition had formed into pneumonia as a result of inhaling the chemicals. the dealership where the consumer purchased the vehicle stated the discharge was associated with the evaporator tube and it was common. they also stated it was a factory defect and it could happen again. *jb

2010 ford escape. consumer states vehicle has a fast idle speed, ignition key lock problem and a soft brake problem. *tgw the consumer requested to have the idle speed lowered to 500 rpm. the dealer stated that could not be done because the idle was set at the factory. the consumer stated the vehicle would roll forward and backwards due to the fast idle speed. he almost hit the back of a building because the vehicle rolled back when he started the vehicle in reverse. the key was difficult to turn in the ignition which made it difficult to start the vehicle. *jb

Engine racing and jumping while driving. reverse making loud noise. reported to dealer and was told couldn't do anything until it happened again. jolted at a stop after removing foot from brake forcing driver to turn into curb. had to file claim with insurance company to get car fixed. dealer claims no issues with transmission. did testing w/o insurance engineer present as agreed to. *tr

A/c not cooling, after checked by dealer i was told the complete system was damaged by coming apart from the inside out. complete a/c and lines replaced. ok for about 8 weeks, now same problem no a/c and dealer will not stand behind their work, nor will ford motor. they want me to pay again to have unit checked and they are not even willing to give me a loaner for the 3 days they claim it is going to take them to find the problem. ford states i have to pay for the check and they are unsure if they will help me pay to the repairs again. *tr

Purchased a 2010 ford escape new, 4 months after the air conditioning stopped working. took it to the dealership to have it fixed and they claimed it could not be fixed because it was damaged by an object most likely from the road. damages are not covered under warranty. the service tech went on to say that the grill does not provide adequate protection for the ac condenser therefore even if i paid to have it fixed and didn't replace the grill, it could happen again. it has been over 3 months and ford still refuses to pay for the repair. it is now on average 102 degrees outside and i cannot drive my vehicle due to the heat and inability to use the ac. *tr
