Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2010 Ford Escape

Car coasted to a stop with engine running. had to stop put in park, shut off and restart and put in gear to move. we have been told it is a throttle body issue and no warranty coverage. it has happened 4 times since yesterday. in traffic it is very dangerous and my wife was almost rear ended today. *tr

While accelerating to pull out into traffic gas pedal quit working and wrench light came on when hitting about 20 mph and car slowed to a crawl. car stayed idling, but gas pedal quit working all together. idled down first side street and shut the car off. restarted vehicle 2 mins later and gas pedal started working again. car idle revs up for a second suddenly on its own at slow speeds like waiting in a drive thru and causes the car to jerk forward if brake pedal is not pressed on firmly. sometimes feels like the person behind you has hit your car when they haven't. *tr

Was driving along at 55 mph when out of the blue the engine sputtered and car shook. the check engine light came on and i had no acceleration from the gas pedal, the car was hard to steer and almost no brakes. when i finally stopped the car the check engine light was still on along with the throttle control/power train wrench light and the anti theft system light blinking. i restarted the car numerous times only to move about a 10th of a mile and it happen again. i have had the car only for 2 days now. i read online a lot of other people having this problem. ford need to be made aware of this and offer a fix. *tr

I was driving my vehicle onto i-95 when the wrench light came on and the car started to buck and pull unable to accelerate the vehicle; pulled over to the side of the highway and turned car off for a few minutes and restarted the car but was no able to accelerate and had to drive on the shoulder until i was able to exit. the vehicle had done it before a few times but since last episode, having returned home on side streets, the car will not drive and is sitting on my driveway.

My family and i were traveling hwy 113 in va coming back to pa from nc. my husband accelerated to pass a vehicle. after passing, our vehicle began losing acceleration...my husband pushed the gas pedal to the floor and was not getting any acceleration. the wrench light illuminated and we had to make an emergency stop on the side of the highway while cars were passing us and coming up on us quickly. we came to a stop and the vehicle began to stall. my husband shut the vehicle off, waiting a minute and restarted. the vehicle seemed to run fine the rest of the way to pa. we called the dealership the following day (monday) and were told they could not get the vehicle in until 8/4. i began finding info on the web regarding ford's customer satisfaction program 13n03 regarding the throttle body. i took the vehicle in and was told there were not any codes showing on the computer. they refused to replace the throttle body. i was told to drive the vehicle and if it happened again to bring it back. i refused and insisted they replace it. i am now still fighting with ford to reimburse me. i have sent letters to ford only to receive a "form letter" back from them suggesting that i take the vehicle to the dealership to determine if the throttle body needs replacement...i had it replaced already...they obviously do not read letters sent to them. i will keep fighting but i do not understand why the nhtsa continues to receive complaints about this issue and does nothing about it. it is a huge safety issue! shame on ford and the nhtsa! *tr

I was driving at 40mph on a city street. the vehicle suddenly shuddered and began to slow down. i am now aware to look for a trouble light. the wrench light was illuminated although difficult to see through the glare of the windshield. i was clearly able to see the light. the car slowed to a complete stop. the engine continued to run rough and there was no loss of electrical power. i put the car into park and restarted the car. the car ran without incident until i was able to park at home-about 5 miles away. the car had routine service on 7-16-2014. a throttle body reading was not done, as i requested at time of service, although it was documented, in writing, that there was a calibration update for my vehicle at this time. a previous incident of complete electrical failure was blamed on a faulty battery in march. i had absolutely no previous indication "failure" or cranking issues up until the time of electrical power/battery failure. even the key fob did not work to unlock the doors. the battery was replaced at my expense. inquiries about the throttle body issue was were also ignored, by the dealer, at that time. *tr

While driving on 70 mph speed limit highway, the vehicle without warning suddenly appeared to downshift dropping my speed approx. by 20 mph, then lurched at 50 mph until i pulled off on the shoulder. this was on a unlit stretch of highway and was very dangerous. i tried again to drive the vehicle with the same results, meanwhile the dashboard warning lights came on. i then pulled off the road and turned the vehicle off for about 5 minutes. when it restarted the warning lights were off and the car drove normally. with about a hour left on the trip, the car started to downshift and upshift randomly as i reduced my speed to about 40 mph on a 70 mph highway, which is very unsafe, so that i could make it home. the last time i had my oil changed, the service technician suggested that i change the transmission fluid. i felt like the old fluid may have been the reason why my car shifted in an erratic manner. so, i took the vehicle to my local ford dealer for the transmission service. this was on july 21, 2014. it was a about week later, that the vehicle began lurching again. this time i decided to try a full tank of gas with cleaner to see if that would improve the performance. it didn't. finally, i made an appointment with a repair shop to fix it on aug 18, 2014. they were the ones that told me the fuel throttle body was bad and that's when i googled and found the extended warranty had expired on july 31, 2014. there should be a recall for this part, not just a bandaid to make it look like the nhtsa was concerned. it is a safety issue and also and expensive repair at $400. nhtsa: do your job and force a recall on this part. you know it is unsafe. *tr

The car entered into failure mode effects management (fmem) mode or limp mode when it was on high way, malfunction indicator lamp (mil) or wrench lamp were both on the dash. the power and vehicle speed was getting reduced, even when i was trying to accelerate the car. before this issue happened, software program for the pcm (powertrain control module) is updated with responding to a service letter from ford and the problem is not fixed. *tr

While traveling on i495 at a steady highway speed of 68mph the car without warning dropped to idle speed with rapid deceleration. the engine did not shut down but ran approx. 800-900rpm. we pulled to the side of the to avoid being hit from behind. i had to shut the car off and restart to get any throttle response. i traveled off the interstate on slower roads to get home for fear of this happening at high speed again. it has happened three more time both at high speed and acceleration from a stop. it was back to the ford dealer for the recall 13b17 on 7/7/14. there have been two more events of no power from stop and low power at highway speed since the tsb was performed. no parts have been replaced, no codes set. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. while making a left turn at 15 mph on a hill, the vehicle hesitated before shifting into drive. two months later, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) and had been repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 76,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate and the wrench light illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure and no repairs had been made to the vehicle. the failure mileage was 52,800 and the current mileage was 53,000. updated 08/14/14*lj the throttle body assembly was replaced. updated 09/16/14

I was pulling out of a parking lot gave it gas. the car went clunk and then stopped moving but engine was still running. luckily i got to the side of the road shut it off waited a but then tried to start it. at first it hesitated but started. 2 days later it did it again. had it on a computer nothing showed up. 2 weeks later on a saturday it happened again. then on monday going to work it did it again. when i was coming home from work that day it did it 2 more times at that time the service engine light came on and then we were able to get a code. he code came up as p2112. thank you. *js

Traveling approximately 30-40 mph when the wrench indicator illuminated and the vehicle lost all power. i coasted into a pull off on the side of the road. turned off the vehicle. restarted a few minutes later and was able to accelerate. in approximately five minutes, at the same approximate speed, the wrench indicator illuminated again and the vehicle lost all power. again i turned off the vehicle and then restarted. i was able to get to the local ford dealership. the dealership could not find any codes stored in the system and they were unable to duplicate the problem. the recalled "reprogramming" was completed on the car. they have offered to keep my vehicle for an additional day to try to reproduce the problem and to check a few additional items. *tr

Traveling on freeway 65mph sudden loss of speed, unable to accelerate when pushed on gas pedal, was able to steer and brake, maneuvered to side of the road, "wrench" warning light appeared on dashboard. turned off ingniton then restarted car functioned normally. felt car was to dangerous to drive and had car towed to ford dealership, replaced electronic throttle body. very dangerous to loose power at that speed on the freeway, was in middle lane in heavy traffic. *js

On numerous occasions i have noticed my truck accelerating while i was stopped. on june 10, i was on my way to church and i was driving and my car stopped accelerating and when i pressed the accelerator it no power went to the car and it started spurting. i had to coast and pull over. the wrench light came on. i cut the truck off and then cranked the car again and i was accelerating. two days later this happened to me again two different times. *tr

I was driving to work on i75 at 75 mph when my 2010 ford escape lost power dropping to less than 20 mph. i was able to get from the left lane to the berm three lanes to my right. i waited about 5 minutes and restarted the car driving about 100 yds. when it happened again. i turned the car off and waited about 20 minutes then restarted and was able to get to work on side roads with the car surging and jerking along the way. i took the car to huntington ford the next day and they could not find a cause. the following day i received a letter from ford regarding what huntington referred to as a "limp home" mode which let take to a dealer and have the throttle body reprogrammed, which i did. the car was ok for a few days after that and then started stalling and surging again. i called the dealer and they said i should replace the throttle body but that even though it was under an extended warranty i would still need to pay for the replacement. *tr

The first incident occurred approximately 2months ago (april 2014) as i was driving on a state road (new circle rd in lexington ky)at around 60mph during my morning commute around 8am. the vehicle seemingly stalled but all the systems were fine (still had power steering, lights, radio, braking system etc) with the exception of the accelerator which didn't do anything when i put my foot on the gas. i was able to coast over to the side of the road turned the engine off, sat for about 5 mins & was able to continue on the road without further issue (the check engine light didn't even come back on). the most recent date was 06/07/14 with my family in the car as passengers. i was at a stoplight turning left when, as previously, the engine stalled as i was turning. again, all systems registered and were working but when i put my foot on the gas nothing happened. again i was luckily able to coast to the side of the road and turn off the engine. this time after waiting roughly 5 mins and turning the engine back on, nothing happened after i hit the accelerator. i turned the engine back off and waited an additional 5 mins. this time i was able to give the car gas and as my home was nearby was thankfully able to make it to my house. the check engine light however did not go off as it had previously. i took the car to my dealership on 06/09/14 and they confirmed that it was the throttle body. *tr

I was driving on a highway and the wrench symbol appeared on the dash. then power was cut to the engine and i coasted to the side of the road. restarting the car removed the wrench and i was able to drive home. the exact same incident occurred again four days later on 5/29/14. *tr

I went to stop at the light and suv jerked and shook. sounded like bottom fell out of suv. pulled into parking lot. suv running but when putting foot on gas nothing would happen, no matter what gear. took it to repair shop and they said throttle body bad. this is the 2nd part that is defective on the 2010 ford escape!!! replaced transmission at 60,500 miles (got ripped off when ford would not warranty)! *tr

Slowly approaching a stop sign, vehicle stalled. battery light, wrench light, and oil light came on. put the car in park to restart it, started and went on. *tr

Escape sitting at stop light wrench light illuminated on dash and escape had no power turned car off and then restarted the escape and drove home not another issue for the next 16 miles.. used obdii code reader to scan escapes on board computer and it had freeze frame data from a p2111 code which indicates throttle body issue. *tr

Concern 25 & 51 - vehicle leaking oil and grease from engine/transaxle area. *tr

1st occurrence: i was driving at 35mph and suddenly my car surged forward then slowed down to 5mph. i tried to accelerate to a higher mph but it would not let me go any faster. i could steer and the radio was still on. confused, i coasted off the side of the road, looked at the instrument panel for a light of some kind (none were there). i then turned off the engine and let it sit for approximately 2 minutes then it restarted and i drove home (about 1 1/2 miles) the 2nd occurrence - may 6th. i had just left my doctor's office, within 1 1/2 minutes & driving 15 mph (1/16 of a mile) the failure happened again. i again had to coast to the side of the road apply my hazard lights and turn off the engine for approximately 2 minutes. it re-started and i drove it home (it was intermediately surging forward) about 5 miles. the 3rd occurrence: may 8th on i-70 westbound :speed 60 mph: loss of power, coasted to the berm of the highway, ( thank goodness all the traffic was 1 mile behind me or this could have caused a serious accident) turned it off and waited about 2 minutes and restarted made it to work and home without further stalling but the jerking continued. i called interstate ford (miamisburg) explained the problems i was experiencing and my fear to drive this vehicle. *tr

I was driving at approximately 25 mph, and suddenly the car began to sputter. the gas pedal was non responsive and the car was surging forward. i pulled over to the side of the road and turned the car off. about 5 mins later i turned it back on and the engine and throttle lights came on. after a few seconds the throttle light went off, but the engine light stayed on. i then tried to drive the car home, but after about two blocks the same thing happened again. this happened several more times until i could get the car to a safe place and out of the road. the car is still in the parking lot where i left it and i am currently trying to find out my towing and repair options. *tr

I was driving about 20 mph when all of a sudden my car started thrusting forward. it was almost like my car had died and when i would step on the gas it wouldn't work and there was no rpm's. my car would just thrust forward and come to a crawl. then when i would stop my car it wouldn't move forward. this has happened 3 times in the past month. the first time i was at a stop light and my car had died and i stopped traffic for about 15 minutes. when i would turn my car off and re-start it would finally work. my car never popped a code until it happened again yesterday. we red the code and it was p1111. the throttle body was stuck open. the part that i need is #9l8e-bc. my car is a 2010 and low miles. *tr

Traveling on freeway in fort worth and car went into "limp mode". was fortunate enough to be able to get to the side of the road. the "wrench" light immediately came on as well as the "check engine" light. i turned the car off, then after about 30 seconds, was able to restart the car and proceed approx. 4 more miles before same thing happened again. at this point i contacted the dealer who i purchased the car from and they sent a tow truck out the next morning. *tr

While driving approx 45-60 mph wrench icon and engine icon lights came on vehicle stopped accelerating everything else worked and engine was still running, gas pedal did not accelerate or raise rpm's. pulled to side of road put in park and turned engine off, vehicle started with hesitation wrench light did not appear, engine light remained on though vehicle was drivable again. problem happened repetitively the rest of the 45 min drive home with wrench light appearing and acceleration ceasing had to pull over and restart numerous times. engine icon remains lit. *tr

I was accelerating to get on the i-5 south in carlsbad ca when suddenly the wrench warning light came on and immediately after that the vehicle lost all throttle, pushed the gas pedal down and nothing happened. i was in the third lane and had to coast back to an almost non- existent shoulder and we were nearly struck by two vehicles in the process. i am taking the vehicle back to the ford dealer where it was purchased, we were recently there for a check engine light that was diagnosed to be "no problems". i do not feel confident or safe in this vehicle and will not allow my wife and child to ride as passengers in it again. i am putting the vehicle up for sale and not going to purchase the 2014 i had planned to buy as a second car. just a note, my co- worker has a 2011 and had the same issue four times with one nearly causing a head-on collision in an intersection. this far along, do people have to die before this is fixed? *tr

The first time i noticed i was putting the car into park and my car felt like it was slipping on ice. (it was a clear day) the second time i was going around 40mph and all of sudden it started slowing down on it's on to almost completely stopping and i turned into a driveway to get off the road. the wrench symbol came on , on the dashboard. i turned the car off and then back on to turn and around and drive it to a safe location. *tr

After i came to a stop in residential area, i traveled about 25 mph and the vehicle seemed to be in neutral, i was able to steer to the side of the road, but nothing happened when i put more pressure on the accelerator, this was really frightening to experience without a warning, and i will never buy another ford vehicle, at about 18 months after owning the vehicle the entire transmission had to be rebuilt and i bought this brand new to avoid issues. *tr

I was at a complete stop.bwhind a vehicle at a stop light. when i released the gas, my vehicle surged forward and hit the vehicle in front of me. fron that day forward, my vehicle had frequently surged forward or reved up qhile at a complete stop. now, my vehicle will shut off while i'm driving with no warning. the only light i see is the wrench light and that's only while the vehicle is rolling to a stop after shutting off.

Vehicle loses power while going down the highway. it stalls out and when you make a turn it cuts off with no warning. it surges while traveling. *tr

I was pulling into a parking spot at a cvs pharmacy, about to put my car in park when it surged forward and into the doors of the store. i was not injured but mortified that i could have killed someone. when i received the recall notice i took my vehicle to five star ford in plano, tx. today, i had my state inspection yesterday and asked if they could pull up the trouble codes on my computer. the manager told me that the shop's computer couldn't but he had his own code reader that would show the complete record. he did and told me it was erased and there was nothing on it. five star ford in plano is the only place my car has been to that could possibly do this since the accident. i asked them at that time if i could get a transcript from the computer but they said they couldn't do it. *tr

The engine went into a low power mode and throttle was un responsive, i had to cruise to a stop and restart then it seems ok but i notice the throttle will speed up and slow down when i had to run thru a school zone(low speed) it also happened several times after that most recently on 4/21/14 on the highway at 65 mph and i had to drift to the shoulder to restart the car while others honked and veered around me i do not understand why ford has not recalled these. i did get a letter called the customer satisfaction program 13n03 that states the problem- throttle body- is under extended warranty but only if the wrench light is on and mine stays on only when there is a problem if there is additional problems i would have to pay just to get it diagnosed. i am not impressed with fords attempt at this (soft) recall. *tr

While driving at 55mph on road. i lost all power to gas pedal the car was hard to steer to the side of the road. put car in park shut car off .waited a few minutes an started car up. it ran this happens 2 or 3 times on the same day then it might not happen again for a week or two this a ongoing problem that ford should place a safety recall not on soft customer satisfaction program#13no3 this is a serious safety issue. *tr

As i was driving down the road my vehicle lost power, it did not stall, it slowed to almost no speed. i turned off the vehicle and turned it back on. i was able to drive it for about 3 more miles until it happened again. this time the check engine light came on. it took me three time of turning on and off the engine within a block from my house. finally i was able to get it into my drive way. i took into the ford dealership and they replaced the throttle body. *tr

While driving at approximately 45 mph, the wrench indicator light lit up on my instrument panel and i lost power to the wheels. had vehicle towed to dealership on 1/10/14 where the mechanics diagnosed a throttle body failure. *tr

Driving on highway using cruise control setting at 65 mph, when all of sudden vehicle began to slow down and stall on me. i had to pull over on the side of the road because the vehicle was shaking and i could not give it power to stay with traffic speed. i got to the side put the vehicle in park and it still was shaken so i turned it off. i then waited a minute or so and started the vehicle back up even though it was hesitating to start. once back on i drove with my hazard on at a speed of 50 mph. *tr

While driving down the interstate my escape suddenly lost power and slowed to around 5 mph. i pulled to the shoulder, placed the car in park, shut it off, waited a few minutes, then started it and continued on my way. this has happened two more times since, both while traveling 30 mph in town. i followed the same procedure and was able to continue on my way. i believe this to be an issue with the throttle body, as i have consulted my local mechanic. he confirmed that he has seen a few escapes with the same issue. *tr

I was driving about 30 miles an hour and the wrench warning light came on my dashboard. my car started to coast to a stop. i could no longer accelerate or maintain my speed. luckily, i was able to get to the side of the road safely as my car came to a stop. the electrical was still working. i turned off my car and waited. i placed several calls and found out how to reset. i turned the key, without turning the engine, pumped the gas pedal three times, and turned the car fully off. i then turned the car on, and the light was no longer on. it now seems to be working fine. i am very concerned that this problem will return and could possibly happen on interstate or on a crowded street, and i may not be so lucky. *tr

I was driving along a road and suddenly my car jolted and almost all of my dashboard lights lit up. the engine was on, but nothing was happening. i pushed the accelerator down and nothing, still. as i was pulling off to the side of the road, the car died. i waited five minutes and the engine was able to be restarted. but the engine light stayed on. i had to turn the engine on and off multiple times to restart the engine. this had happened a couple of times before, but nothing as severe. *tr

While driving on surface streets the "wrench" indicator light came on and the car went into limp mode. i got to a parking lot and shut off the engine. after about a minute i restarted the engine, the wrench light went out and all seemed ok. after driving about 6-7 miles on the interstate a repeat of the problem happened. i again shut off the engine. after restarting, i drove for another 6-7 miles and had the car again go into limp mode. after restarting the car the engine light came on and stayed on with no further problems. the next day all lights were off and have stayed off since then. i have made an appointment to have the car looked at on jan 2, 2014. i feel that this is a very unsafe condition and should be looked at very closely by the nhtsa. *tr

While driving at approximately 70 mph on the interstate, my vehicle suddenly lost acceleration and the gas pedal no longer controlled the speed. steering and brakes were unaffected. a wrench display appeared on the instrument panel. after coasting to a stop, i turned the car off and back on. everything functioned properly and the wrench disappeared from the instrument panel. i took the vehicle to a ford dealership 2 days later and was told it was a defective throttle body assembly. *tr

Began to run very rough. on july 13, 2013, i experienced a similar problem. malloy ford in winchester, va, charged me $310 to clean the throttle body. after doing some research, i see this is a known problem, i'm disgusted with ford and the dealership. *tr

Vehicle failed, as it stopped an alarm lit up, showing a wrench, diagnostic showed a trottle failure. it has happened (5) times since dec 04, 2013. last time, it failed after seventeen (17) miles run. when vehicle is turned off, the alarm light goes off and the vehicle runs again.

I was driving down a very busy 5-lane road when all of a sudden a wrench appeared on my dashboard and my car had absolutely no power in the accelerator. it began idling irrationally and my car was shaking. i had it towed to the ford dealership to be fixed. it is the throttle body that is malfunctioning, and they guaranteed to me that it would happen again if not fixed. they informed me that there have been many vehicles with this same problem. someone is going to be killed due to this! i was lucky that no one hit me- i could not even get over to the side of the road- my vehicle just had no power at all. if this happens on a highway, this could be horrific! i am extremely disappointed and upset that a recall has not been issued. there have been thousands of complaints, and nothing has been done. someone is going to be severely hurt or be killed due to this issue! *tr

My wife was driving are escape and she was merging on the freeway. while trying to merge on the freeway she was traveling 60 mph almost to highway speeds she went to merge in front of a truck and the escape stalled. we were almost hit by the truck because the vehicle had lost all power. we took the vehicle to a dealership and the vehicle was diagnosed with a bad throttle body. *tr

When trying to accelerate, the engine sounds rough. the engine won't accelerate when this occurs. a small wrench icon lights up on the dashboard. i have to pull over, turn off the vehicle, then restart it. it then sounds and drives normally, until the next time this occurs, which can be only days later. it is likely a defective throttle body. i have seen many mentions of this same problem on the internet. it should be a recall. *tr

I heard a pop sound and there was no response when pressing on the accelerator. idle was rough, i was able to coast into a parking lot.i let it idle and tried to increase rpm. there was no response to pedal. the car idle roughly. i shut car off and restarted. it cranked longer than normal, like it wasn't getting fuel. then it ran fine. after about 20 more miles it repeated process, leaving me to coast off the road in traffic. i have a warning light (wrench) meaning throttle body or drive train on my dash during the shut down. i have had this vehicle in ford repair shops over four times for powertrain repairs, starting before warranty was expired. the last one ford would not cover the repair under previous warranty, even though the first repair during warranty period was never fixed. now i am endangering myself and all those around me by the new problem. if the vehicle does this in a center lane a pile up could occur. *tr

While driving approx 20 mph in a community to car slowed down to a crawl. it would not travel faster than approx 5 mph. happened again a week later. took it to garage the computer read p2111 - throttle actuator control tac system - stuck open. description; this powertrain control module pcm fault status indicates the throttle plate is at a greater angle than commanded. possible causes; binding throttle body stuck open, tac motor circuit open, tac motor circuits are cross-wired, tac motor harness circuits are shorted together, damage pcm. *tr
