Recently reported STEERING problems on 2010 Ford Escape

I had the recall 14s05c done in february to "fix" the potential electric power steering problem by reprogramming the pscm and ipc modules. now in september i started my car and the steering just stopped working. towed it to the dealer and they said the steering column and power steering needs to be replaced for a cost of $1,350. i sure hope ford will pay for this. i mean, what's the point of a recall service if it doesn't fix the problem.

I had been driving, then made a brief stop. when i started my car and put in "drive" to begin driving, my power steering was out. it was very difficult to turn the steering wheel. luckily i was only about 1.5 miles away. i managed to get home but had the car towed to northgate ford in cincinnati, oh the next morning. after 3 days at the dealership, they called to say there was nothing wrong with it. i know that other ford escapes have been recalled for the power steering going out, but checked my vin and mine was not involved......yet! two months later, i took the car in for continuing difficulty with starting (nothing would happen for about 10 turns of the key, then immediately would start) and inability to unlock/lock car with fob despite changing battery. they had to replace the ignition lock cylinder, cylinder module and bolt. suddenly the car both started right away and the remote key fob worked as well.

When came out of store and started the truck the power steering was not working. called my husband and he had me look for the fill reservoir for the power steering and check the belt. he determined that it is a closed system. this has happened many times since then. it always happens when i start it not while i am driving. i have had to drive it that way as it is my only mode of transportation. looked it up online and discovered there was a recall but the manufacturers date was only through 09/2010. mine is 01/2011. the dealer told me they cannot do it as a recall because mine is not on the list. even though it is the same problem as the earlier ones. ford told me to save my receipts in case there was a recall and told me i had to contact nhtsa to file a complaint. i am afraid it will start to happen while i am driving and cannot afford to have it fixed. they need to extend the recall before someone gets hurt.

As i was making a left turn my steering wheel locked up, an alarm went off, and then the car returned to normal steering again. has happened quite a few times and have brought it to ford and still happened afterwards until this last time my power steering has gone out completely on a 7hr drive home with a baby in the back seat.

Have to push in key hard to start vehicle.

I was driving down i-70 west bound and my car started to change lanes without my control. also since i had the ford's recall number 14s05 service my gas millage has also dropped by 3-5 miles per gallon. before the recall service i had no issues with my car. i have noticed my car steering is over compensating providing a carnival type ride. (car sickness to those who ride with me and sometimes myself also.) asked the ford motor car company about restoring back to the orginal setting and they said no. my car is no longer safe to use since i had the 14s05 recall service done. *js

I drive a 2010 ford escape and received a recall notice (#14s05) for the power steering sensor. i took it to liberty ford in parma heights in october 2014 to have this fixed. in late january 2015 i again received the same signal on my dashboard that i did prior to the recall. my steering wheel became hard to steer. i brought it back to the dealer and was informed that the steering column needs to be replaced and this would cost me almost 1200.00. the dealer informed me that this really doesn't have anything to do with the recall and is due to normal wear and tear on the vehicle. another customer going through the same thing advised me that his mechanic advised him that this is a known ford defect. they are passing these costs onto me - this is so unfair. i have no recourse but to pay this amount since it is my only vehicle. *tr

Ford issued a recall for my 2010 escape (nhtsa recall: 14v-284) for power steering issues which i responded to and a local dealership had it in for service. now i am starting to experience the issues that were cited in the recall including loss of power steering leading me to believe that the recall did not correct the situation at all. *tr

Power steering failed. there was a recall in july 2014 on this. dealership then reset the software for the torque sensor. the recall states that either a software update is needed, the torque sensor replaced, or the steering column replaced. at the time i had no issues. 6 months later my power steering failed. i am now told i need to replace the steering column. the recall states if a software reset was done that any further issues would not be covered. the cost for this is roughly $1,500 whereas a software reset only costs ford motor company about an hour and a half labor. i feel the software update was a "band-aid" to a much larger problem with this model and the problem is being passed onto the consumer. *tr

Was driving, and transmission wouldn't allow rpm to go above 500 and continued to drop to 0 and shut off in the middle of the road. *tr

My car cut off while i was driving & when i was at a stop light. the car came to a sudden stop in the middle of an intersection (completely losing all power) a large suv swerved to prevent from hitting me. i immediately took the car to the vic bailey ford, they kept my car on & off for 5 days. charging me $98 for a diagnostic test (that they stated revealed nothing about the problem) & then they turned around & charged me #130 for a new battery, the car continued to cut off on me. they kept my car for another 3 days. finally they called me & told me to come pick up the car. the service dept. stated that they didn't know what was wrong w/ the car, but they knew something was wrong w/ it. they told me to wait til the problem got worst. they sent me home w/ a car that cuts off constantly, they don't care that i need to drive a dependable car. i'm an educator/state employee that doesn't have all this money to keep putting my car into the shop & missing days from work. they don't care that i have a young son who rides in that car w/ me to school. they don't care that by driving that car my life & my son life is (was) put in danger. all they saw was a black single mother that they thought they could tell anything to. i have spoken with the service mgr. (no help) ford rep (no help) the customer service mgr. (no help). it is awful, that in 2015 an america woman is treated w/ such disrespect & pushed to the side. ford made this car, they sale this car, so they should be able to fix the car. ford should make reliable cars for the consumer. who is suppose to help when the big vic bailey ford, vic bailey honda, vic bailey ford repair shop, ford motor company, & ford service all do nothing to fix this issue? by putting this information out to the public i hope to make others aware of the treatment that i have received & make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else. *tr

I was driving on a service road and was entering the freeway when the transmission started slipping. this caused my vehicle to start jerking. the vehicle behind me almost ran over me as i was loosing speed due to the transmission slipping. i managed to pull over and after a couple of minutes the transmission started working again and i was able to pick up speed and continue driving. this incident also caused my braking and steering to be erratic. this happened 3 times on dec 9, 2014. this is unsafe as it nearly caused a major accident in heavy traffic going south on interstate 35 out of austin. by my estimation there would have been no fewer than 5 to 6 vehicles involved in an accident had i not managed to pull over. *tr

The first time this happened i was coming to a stop during rush hour traffic in feb 2014. i was slowing down to stop when i noticed the red battery & wrench light come on. when i tried to accelerate the vehicle wouldn't move & the engine was off. i attempted to restart the vehicle several times with no luck. the dash lights & radio would work but it wouldn't start. i had to be pushed out of traffic. while waiting for the tow truck i tried again & it started (approximately after 15 min). i immediately took it to the ford dealer. they "supposedly" fixed it under a recall. it just happened again (oct 2014) to me while coming to a stop during rush hour. again the lights turned red and the engine died. i attempted to restart several times without any luck. the dash lights & radio worked but it wouldn't start. finally after several attempts it started again. i'm waiting for my appointment with the ford dealer. this issue needs to be reviewed before someone gets seriously hurt given that the engine dies without notice. plus the "repair" didn't work! *tr

The steering at first start up will not turn after restart works with a shake in the steering wheel an at stop light. *tr

I bought the car 6 months ago. parked the car on friday night, came outside to start my car and drive and the power steering does not work. took the car to the dealership and they are quoting $1500 to fix. not covered by ford. can't believe a not even 4 year old car is having this problem, and sounds like so many others are dealing with the same problem. i feel like i got a lemon. this should definitely be recalled. *tr

I was traveling down the road at approximately 35mph when my power steering completely went out. i had to use extreme force to maneuver my vehicle to the side of the road. i turned it off, waited about 5 minutes, and then turned it back on. the power steering worked for about 1 mile, at which time i lost my power steering. i was unable to complete a turn on a roundabout and almost hit another vehicle because it was so difficult to steer. *tr

Lost power steering - was hard to maneuver vehicle out of roadway. serious traffic hazard with oncoming traffic. happens out of the blue and there is no warning that loss of power steering is going to occur. i shut the vehicle off, waited a few minutes, turned the vehicle back on and the problem resolved. however, this has happened prior about 3 months before this incident. have there been any recalls regarding this issue? *tr

The electronic power steering randomly stops working. you can turn the ignition off and back on and it works for a while. i took it to a ford service dept. said it would cost around $1500.00 to replace the steering column. after researching online i have found this to be a very frequent problem. there should be a recall before somebody, if not already, is killed. *tr

I've had 2 instances of loss of steering assist on my 2010 ford escape. the first instance was at approximately 45 mph. steering assist failed. the wheel was very difficult for my husband to turn. he slowed the car down, turned on the hazards, and pulled over. the car was shut off and started again. power assist worked again at start-up. our three children and i were also in the car, and i'm surprised we were not rear-ended. the second instance was when i was in line at a drive-through. i couldn't turn the wheel when pulling forward. i shut the car off and restarted. power assist worked at start-up. i contacted the ford dealership, who was very aware of the issue and quoted me $1100-1400 repairs. car was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the issues as a faulty power assist motor. replacement was quoted at $1400. i commute 50 miles round trip every day. i am very worried of the steering assist failing on the highway or while my children are in the car again. failure occurred at 75,000 miles. *tr

Throughout all of last winter, i had issues with my 2010 ford escape stalling. this occurred countless times, and nearly caused many accidents. it most frequently occurred when it was very cold (zero or below), and on some occasions would stall numerous times in a row, or fail to re-start. no warning light of any sort ever came on. after paying well over $1000 to get various things "fixed" that i was told would solve the problem, it continued happening. then i received the first bulletin letter regarding throttle body issues and took my car to the ford dealership in south burlington, vt. they proceeded to tell me that because they couldn't duplicate the issue, or get a code, they couldn't help me. a few weeks later when it happened again, the wrench light came on for the first time, so i drove directly to the dealership again. i was told once again that they couldn't fix the throttle body issue, and tried charging me over $300 for diagnosing my car (looking into the issue of why the wrench was illuminated). i refused to pay, because this is a ford issue, it's well documented all over the internet, and it's something they need to pay for. my car is still not fixed. *tr

1st - vehicle was refueled with 87 octane and just drove one mile down and up a hill were it stopped at a red light. light turned green and the throttle was applied and vehicle lurched and stalled. 2nd - vehicle was driving around neighborhood going 20 mph and started to sputter and hesitate 3rd - rush hour traffic were it was stopped then throttle applied and lurched and stalled 4th - using cruise control driving 75 mph down parkway, vehicle hesitated and then quickly slowed down to 20 mph and stalled 5th - driving to dealer to figure out hesitation and stall, accelerated from red light and hesitated and stalled 6th - still enroute to dealer, check engine light is now illuminated, and vehicle stalls again only 300 feet from last stall. engine has rough idle. police officer suggested throttle body problem because his ford expedition recently had the same problem and symptoms. dealer diagnosed a bad throttle body. vehicle did not have any check engine light illuminated until the last 6th stall. every time vehicle experienced problem there was no throttle response and restart in neutral led to re-stalling. vehicle had to be stopped and re-started after transmission was placed in park. engine sputtered and was resistant to acceleration after 6th stall but slow smooth acceleration proved effective. all stalls were experienced with light to moderate acceleration. *ln

While driving at highway speeds 65 mph , my cars engine suddenly stopped running . this has happened more than once at different speeds. nearly caused a pile up. *tr

First incident: i was driving along rte 95 heading towards the tapanzee bridge going 65 mph when suddenly the power steering went and it became very difficult to steer. i immediately tried to safely exit the highway to find out what was wrong. it was extremely hard to steer, but thankfully i found a fairly safe place to stop and turn the car off. i waited about 5 minutes trying to figure out what to do. then i started the car and the problem was gone. second incident: my wife was coming home from work on april 11th, 2013 when she stopped at a stop sign. when she began to make a right turn onto a busy street, the power steering went again. luckily she made it home safely and informed me of what happened. i turned the car on and took it for a drive. the power steering was back on. there were at least two more times when all of a sudden the power steering went off and after awhile came back on. we had a new power steering column assembly put in our ford escape on june 6th, 2013. luckily we had a ford premium care warranty plan and this problem was covered, but had to pay $100 deductible. recently ford has announced a safety recall on the power steering assembly on ford escapes manufactured in certain parts of the country. my vin number was not part of that safety recall, yet i had the same problem with my power steering. what would i have had to pay to replace this power steering if i hadn't had a warranty plan? i want ford to reimburse my $100 deductible, but they say since my vin number at this time was not part of the recall they won't reimburse me. what kind of customer relations in this with a big company like ford who wants to sell cars in good faith. it is lucky for them that my family or someone else was not injured when the power steering went in my ford escape. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, she was unable to move the steering wheel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the steering shaft torque sensor needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included on any recalls. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 96,000 and the current mileage was 96,700. updated 5/7/13 *cn

On the morning of 12/13/12 i was on my way to my daughters daycare & my work going around 70 mph on i-75 south with my 22 month old daughter in her car seat, when my steering wheel locked up on me in my 2010 ford escape. i couldn't move the car to get over onto the shoulder. i started to panic! my alignment was a little off i guess, so my tires led me to the left (thank god) & i was able to stop my car on the shoulder by slowing down & letting my car glide over. i had power steering fluid at the time, but yet i wasn't even able to strong arm the steering wheel to get it to move. it was completely locked! the ford dealership told me i had to have the whole steering system replaced and will cost me $1,200. my (2010) 3 year old car is no longer under it's 36,000 warranty, so of course ford thinks i should pay for it! how can a steering wheel not be able to move side to side??? it's a steering wheel! this wasn't caused by any lack of maintenance or vehicle up keep. there should be no reason a 3 year old car should need a whole new steering system! this could have killed my 2 year old daughter & i if the express way started to curve. i was blessed i-75 was going straight at the time! please recall this, so no one else is killed or they are put in harms way. here is a website with other people who have had problems...... http://www.carproblemzoo.com/ford/escape/2010/power-steering-failed-problems.php. *tr
