Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2005 Ford Escape

Ford escape 2005 v6 2wd limited. the engine suddenly shuts off while driving. when this happens the theft light is flashing. this generates an error code. the condition is known to ford. they say it is related to a possible issue with a spark plug causing interference with the communication between the chip in the ignition key and the receiving unit. i have had this happen 4 times in one 300 mile drive. after having the error code cleared the problem has not repeated. i believe if this were to happen on a busy freeway lives could be lost. once the vehicle has confirmed the key is valid and the engine has started, the computer should not be allowed to disable the engine. braking and steering control are affected when this happens. *tw *tr

Accelerator pedal keeps getting stuck. while driving my son to school this morning i turned the corner pressed the accelerator it felt like a brick was under the pedal. luckily i was able to just glide to the curb before getting struck by a bus. scared the "bleep" out of both of us. it's not the first time it has happened, usually it happens in the winter after sitting overnite. help what is the problem so i can get this fixed. this is very, very, very dangerous. *tr

I have a 2005 ford escape and was having problems with the gas pedal sticking. when pressing on the accelerator pedal, it would not move. i took my vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the throttle body. this part has been replaced three times. [12/20/06, 10/8/08 and 12/6/09] the part is evidently defective and causes a safety issue. i shouldn't have to pay for it to get fixed every time. they need to issue a recall. *tr

We had to have the throttle body replaced on our 2005 ford escape. prior to replacement you could be driving and the gas pedal would freeze up and you would not be able to push it down. it would stick as if something was behind it, and nothing was. i was never in an accident, however when you pull out to merge into traffic and you can not accelerate because the pedal won't go down, it is amazing you are not in an accident. i found several people on-line with the same issue when i searched ford escape sticky pedal. *tr

Accelerator gets stuck. was okay until about 100,000 miles and then without warning, could not press the accelerator. was in an intersection and almost got hit. couldn't even press it if i "stomped" on it. *tr

Gas pedal appears to get stuck on occasion. i thought the car mat was stuck under it, but the mat is secured to the floor. i have to push the very top of the pedal to get it to accelerate. thought it might have been me until i read other people were having the same problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. while entering a parking space she lightly applied pressure to the accelerator pedal, and then the vehicle accelerated without intention. brake application would not stop the vehicle as a consequence she crashed into cables of a wall. the vehicle was towed to a local repair facility. a mechanic concluded that should would have to pay up to $2000.00 in repairs. the model year was excluded from recall # 04v574000 (vehicle speed control:cables). the failure and current mileages were 60000.the vehicle identification number was unavailable.

1. the past three winters my vehicle has grown worse with the gas pedal sticking in the cold / rainy months. 2. it occurs during the cold / rainy months 3. i have not taken it to a dealership. based on the research i have conducted i am showing quite a deal of many people who own the 2005 ford escape are having this identical issue -- this is a huge safety concern and i feel if not recalled someone is going to become seriously injured if not die from this. i am having my vehicle looked at for in the past two days alone i have almost had five accidents as the gas pedal sticks during the first 20 minutes or so of warming up. *tr

During cold weather, the gas pedal will stick and not accelerate or release. it will not release for sometimes up to ten minutes. this happens several times over several days in a week during colder months. this has been consistently happening since 2009. the most recent on 11/5/2012. *tr

First time it happened in 2009, i was driving on the freeway in traffic when the traffic began to accelerate, when i depressed my accelerator it was like pressing against a wall. my car was moving from the natural force from when i was braked but it would not accelerate, i had to steer my car to the shoulder and stop. when i stopped i made a phone to a friend of mine to tell them to come and get me because my car wasn't working. as i was waiting for them i decided to start my car and press the accelerator, when i did it worked so i went ahead and drove home. this happened approximately 3 more times that year but on these occasions once i would attempt to depress the accelerator as i was driving it would then work. i made a note to get it fixed but by this time it was the spring and it never happened again until winter 2011. i this point i had my neighbor look at it(who is a mechanic) and he said it was the throttle cable, he sprayed it with some wd40 and it seemed to work, well that was only for about 2 days, because it stuck again one morning on the way to work. at this point i took it to a mechanic to get the throttle cable fixed. unfortunately, at the time i took it in i wasn't able to "recreate" the problem. i explained the shop the problem and they too felt as though it may be the cable, i spent around $300 for the part and labor to have it replaced. well that was november of 2011 and it is now feb 2012 and it happened again this morning. as other's have reported i am thankful that as i was making the left turn that it was a protected left, due to the light, because that's when my accelerator failed. i had to pull over wait around 15min. and then it worked. just would like a straight answer to the fix. this car just got paid off in 2010 and i want to feel like it is an asset and not a liability to my family. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. while driving approximately 10 mph on normal road conditions pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate. the driver repeatedly applied pressure to the accelerator pedal for twenty minutes and was able to resume normal operation. the failure occurred in the morning vs throughout the day. the vehicle will be taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. the contact was concerned about the safety risk involved. the failure mileage was 97,000 and the beginning rental mileage was 99,386.

I have a 2005 ford escape (4wd), not the hybrid. i have approx. 63,000 mi on it now. three times since i've owned it the car has suddenly started accelerating on it's own. the last time was approx. the date below, and that was the only time i was using the cruise control. one time i was in town and luckily there wasn't anyone close in front of me. so far braking, or pressing the accelerator has "reset" it, but now seeing this problem with the toyota's i'm concerned. i e-mailed ford about the problem, however i kind of got the brush-off, and they just said if i was concerned i should take it to my dealer and have it checked. i know a "check" would cost me a large amount of money for an intermittent problem for which they won't find the problem. i just wonder if you've heard of anyone else having this problem? it now worries me that if i were nearing a crosswalk, with pedestrians crossing and it happened, i might hit someone. please advise. thank you for your time. *tr

Car sits in the driveway and when it is turned on, especially in the winter, the accelerator sticks to the point that i have to put full force to jam the pedal down to take off. if i am at a light and stopped, the same thing happens. i have the repair shop fix this issue twice but decided to lodge a complaint based upon news reports. i have not had any other issue with the suv and i love my ford. i am not sure that his is a safety issue and i have been trying to find out. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. while driving between 25-55 mph, the throttle will stick and the contact must wiggle the pedal to get it loose. the dealer stated that carbon builds up in the throttle body and causes it to stick. the contact believes that a crash could occur due to the high acceleration. the current and failure mileages were 35,000.

On 9-9-08 i was in a front end collision, approximately 40mph, airbag did deploy, however the powder that came out with the airbag made my face and eyes burn. my 2005 ford escape 4cyl. sustained minimal damage ($5000.00). it took 3 weeks to fix, which was no big deal. yesterday, 10-4-08, while driving home from work, my escape was running fine until i turned and started to accelerate to get up to speed (40mph), my escape took the pedal from my foot and locked it to the floor, i have been asked by several people if i accidentally hit the cruise, and all i reply with is "it doesn't have cruise!" as my car started to speed up i tried to stop, my brakes would only kick back out at me and since i was just in a wreck i was a little scared. i turned into a parking lot and drove in circles until i could figure out how to stop it. i tried my ebrake but it didn't work, i tried pulling the pedal up, no good, i tried punching the pedal with my foot, no good. i didn't want to do any damage to the tranny so i didn't take it out of gear, finally i decided to try shutting it off, it shut off and is running fine now. i am certain that this is a huge problem mainly because i have read all of the postings for this car and found that many people are having problems in this area. you can be certain that if this happens again and there isn't anything done to fix it, i will get rid of it and stop buying fords all together. i am very disappointed that no real action has been taken with so many of these complaints. *tr

2005 ford escape, 4cyl, awd. bought it new and have 70,000 miles on it. gas pedal keeps sticking. took it back to the dealer tedd britt ford three times (which handles all of my service). they can not find the problem. *tr

We first experienced the sticking gas pedal in maybe 2008. we brought it to hawk ford in oak lawn, ill and they said there was nothing wrong with our truck.. this problem continued on and off for years. the last straw was when my husband had to drive approximately 50 miles with his foot on the brake and the gas pedal to get to our house. i had previously reported this life-threatening situation to your database a few years ago. i followed up with several letters/e-mails to ford, all of which were unsympathetic and met with veiled sarcasm and lack of interest. i still wonder how they sleep at night knowing this terrible and dangerous defect is real. *tr

The accelerator sticks when revving the engine while letting out the clutch. after exerting an increasing amount of pedal pressure, it suddenly unsticks, and the engine overrevs. this results in a jack rabbit start. the ford dealer said that only fix is to replace the throttle body assembly, which is not covered by the warranty. i believe this is a safety issue and is a good candidate for a recall. *tr

2005 ford escape gas pedal sticking, to the point where i went to get in my car and drive and the pedal would not budge. had throttle body replaced and exactly one year later it is doing the same thing. tried wd-40 to no avail. *tr

Cruise control would take over without warning and without the switch being depressed. the engine would accelerate. at times the cruise control would drop out for no apparent reason. the cruise control could be engaged by merely sliding the thumb across the switch without depressing it. vehicle was taken to galpin ford in dewey, az for repair. the problem was explained to the service department. the vehicle was returned without repair. the service rep said they had taken the vehicle for a test drive and found no problem. when i got home i read the invoice in detail and found a notation from the mechanic that stated the switch needed replaced. i visited the service manager of the parent dealership, galpin ford of prescott, az and indicated my displeasure with a dangerous problem not being corrected. he stated the defect had not been recalled yet but promised if it did get recalled in the future, they would reimburse the cost of the repair. the switch was replaced 1/15/08 at a cost of $69.34 parts and 133.58 labor. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. the contact stated that while parked she attempted to start the vehicle when she noticed the gas pedal was sticking causing the vehicle to accelerate. the contact started to tap the gas pedal and managed to unlodged the pedal. also the contact mentioned that the failure occurs constantly during the winter. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnostic testing. the technician stated the throttle needed to be sprayed with wd-40. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 100,000.

The gas pedal sticks when its cold out, first i thought there was water frozen after my feet was wet from the snow. second i thought the heat from the heater dried out the movement of the gas pedal. so i sprayed wd40 on it didn't help, next thought it was the cable out in the engine, i sprayed the cable and linkage didn't help. finally it warmed up and the sticking of the gas pedal went away (2008) now in 2009 the same thing after the car warms up its ok, not sure if something is binding or what. *tr

I purchased car in january 2005, first time of this incident was in 2007, november, but it has been an ongoing problem during the winter months more so than summer. i am so nervous about having an accident i just want it fixed. i have it at a ford dealer right now and it is going to cost me $650.00 to have this repaired. i certainly hope this will fix the problem, but i do not have faith here. *tr

Gas pedals sticks. this is an intermittent problem. there was a recall for this same issue for 2001-2004 vehicles. my vehicle is a 2005. this is still an issue. *tr

A few years ago, i started having problems with my gas pedal sticking. it seemed like a brick was underneath the pedal and no matter how hard i pushed it would not unstick. the problem lasted about a month and then went away. every once in a while, the pedal would stick slightly for just a second, but not anything that really concerned me. last week (3/7/2012), the pedal started sticking bad. it seems to be within the first 5 minutes of starting the car and can stick for 10-15 seconds, which is very scary when driving. i had to pull over a couple of times, just because i could no longer accelerate. now, i have started driving around the block for a few minutes until i don't feel the pedal stick anymore before i continue with my drive. the problem has been occurring almost daily for a week now. i can see how if i was turning left and my gas pedal sticks, i could easily get broad sided by an oncoming car. i don't feel comfortable driving the car anymore. *tr

the gas pedal sticks. it can not be pushed. at first, it only happened when the engine was cold & the temperature was cold. now it happens all the time, regardless of temperature. it almost caused an accident when it happened in the middle of an intersection. there is also an issue with multiple broken tone rings and oil leaks. *tr

Gas pedal sticks when foot is lifted off pedal then it is pressed again. at times, the pedal sticks so bad that the car revves high and lunges forward. *jb

From a stop this vehicle has a problem with the throttle. it is intermittent, but when it occurs you unable to press the throttle. it is jammed. it seems if i place the gear shift back into park then to drive it will be free again and drive normally. this started happening once in a while years ago, but seems to be occurring a lot more frequently now. *tr

When the weather gets cold, the gas pedal sticks. this seems to only happen when the car is cold. you start out driving and all of a sudden the pedal won't move. you can't accelerate at all. the pedal is stuck. after a few minutes and the car warms up the pedal usually will start moving again. we have had mechanics look at it and they can't find any problems. however when they get the car it's usually warm. one mechanic thought it was related to the cruise control panel. this has been going on for years. i made sure there was no floor mat interfering too. luckily we have not been in a situation where it would cause a crash. when it happens, you have no choice but to sit on the side of the road and wait for the pedal to free itself. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at any speed the accelerator pedal would stick in a partially depressed position and the vehicle would become inoperable. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic and the throttle body was repaired. the failure recurred. the vehicle was then taken to an authorized dealer, where they were unable to diagnose a failure. no further assistance was offered. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 20,000 and the current mileage was 89,000. updated 08/28/12*lj the consumer stated the throttle body was cleaned. the gas pedal sticking happened quite often. updated 08/29/12

Dt*: the contact stated the accelerator pedal stuck causing the vehicle to lunge forward into traffic. it was stopped by depressing the brake pedal to the floor. the dealer replaced the throttle body five times however the problem recurred. updated 11/30/2006 - the accelerator becomes stuck while attempting to accelerate from a stop or from park. this problem occurred more frequently when the weather was cold. *nm

The gas pedal intermittently sticks which causes sudden and quick deceleration. it feels like a brick is underneath the pedal. no matter how hard i push down, the pedal doesn't budge. then all of a sudden, the pedal will work again. it is a serious safety issue. i did some research on the internet and it looks like a lot of people have had this same issue with ford cars. some people have gotten into accidents because of it. i spoke with ford's corporate office and they said they didn't consider it a safety issue. they took my name and some other basic information, then spent most of the time trying to get me off of the phone. i tried to explain that this is very similar to the sudden acceleration problem that toyota was having, with the only two differences being the car decelerates as opposed to accelerates and that no one has been killed yet. ford told me if i was concerned, i should get my car fixed and that they would not pay for it. these vehicles need to be recalled before someone gets seriously injured or killed.

The cruise control on the right side of steering wheel of 2005 ford escape has a very sharp cutting edge on it resulting in injury. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while turning into a parking lot at low speed, the vehicle lurched forward without warning. the vehicle stopped forward motion when the contact applied brake pressure. also, the automatic transmission makes a clunking noise while shifting gears. additionally, the key is difficult to turn in the ignition. in spite of the ongoing problems, the vehicle was not inspected by the dealer.

Have read on your site numerous complaints with the ford 2005 escape engine and the problem that it speeds up during braking. i have also experienced this problem. however the problem is the driver !! if you are large person or have large feet. during braking the brake pedal goes lower than the gas pedal and your shoe toe catches the gas pedal and accelerates the engine, this has happened numerous times. the gas pedal has very little resistance and you are not aware that your shoe is pushing it down. it appears also that the pedals are closer together than normal. i have other vehicles and have had many cars and this is the first i have experienced this dangerous condition. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while backing the vehicle out of a parking space, the engine fully accelerated. the vehicle was out of control, however the brakes were applied and the motor turned off. this stopped the vehicle without incident. this has happened on 2 occasions. the vehicle was taken to the dealer however the problem could not be duplicated. the manufacturer was alerted. updated 05/02/06. *jb

I bought my escape in june 2004. around/approximately 2006 my gas pedal started to stick as i was driving from time to time. i got stuck in the intersection one morning and couldn't get the pedal unstuck. when i finally did i drove the car over the capitol ford in san jose, ca. and told them what was happening. when ford test drove the car, they said they couldn't find nothing wrong with it. i told them something was wrong with the gas pedal and i was not driving it off the lot until they found the problem with the gas pedal. the next day they called and said the pedal was sticking and they had to replace the throttle body. ford covered because i was under warranty. on 12/6/2011, my pedal started to stick again this time i was on the freeway. stuck 4 times. i took it back to the same ford and told them my pedal was getting stuck i had this problem in 2006 and this shouldn't be happening and they needed to do something about it. i got the song and dance of how the car was out of warranty and they would give me an estimate and i could pay to get it fixed. after inspecting ford said the throttle body was bad again. after stating my case with them this should not be happening they got ford involved to see it they would cover. ford came back and said no. there was nothing they could do because it was out of warranty. again i explained this is not a warranty issue this is a safety issue and people could be seriously injured. ford didn't want to budge and kept using the warranty excuse. so i had no choice but to pay and get this fixed. this is not right. ford needs to take responsibility for their cars and the safety of their customers. this needs to be addressed to ford. *tr

Our gas pedal has been sticking in my wifes escape since we purchased it in 2005. this has been an ongoing problem since we got the car. ford keeps putting bandaids on it. they will clean out a casing or replace a small part. the problem is a defective design that ford won't admit to. the dealership we bought the car from is closed and now ford refused to look at the part without charging me because we dont' have a warranty anymore. this issue almost killed my family this morning. the gas pedal stuck but the car idled out into traffic. my wife couldn't make the car move except in idle. meanwhile cars had to slam on brakes and swerve to miss her. it was a very upsetting situation. ford won't care until someone is killed. *tr

My 2005 ford escape will accelerate unexpectedly while driving down the highway. the accelerator pedal would slam to the floor, the engine and the car would speed up and the pedal would immediately return to the up position. this has happened five time in the last year. the last two times listed below i find that the same problem has been posted on the internet in various sites, some resulting in crashes. this does need to be investigated immediately. *jb

I have a 4 cylinder and my gas pedal is always getting stuck in a position and i have to tap it hard to unstick it. this has been happening since i've bought the truck - at first, i thought it was my shoes, or my imagination, but when i finally let my husband drive my escape, he understood what i meant. is there a recall for this because i have to tap hard to unstick the pedal and it is a safety issue. *nm
