We have classified the 56 complaints from 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
While driving my 2004 dodge ram 1500 while turning at approx 5 miles per hour the car stalled out this has now happened on various occasions. there is no code and several repair shops don t have a clue what to fix and just want to start replacing parts. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 1500. the contact was driving 40 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle and then took the vehicle to an authorized dealer where the failure could not be duplicated. the contact experienced the recurring failure approximately twenty times. the vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 124,000 and the current mileage was 128,581.
Engine stalled at idle, then again when braking coming to a red light. it does this randomly with no warning. almost got into an accident on the second incident as truck took a couple times of trying to restart while at a major intersection. no engine light comes on and no codes are thrown. dodge needs to fix this on their hemi model trucks. have read on multiple web-sights that this is a continuing problem! if dodge doesn't do something soon to fix this for their customers i will be selling my truck for a ford again and never buy from dodge or tell others to buy from them!!! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 1500. the contact was stopped at a stop sign when the vehicle suddenly stalled without warning. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics where the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 101,770.
My 2004 dodge ram 1500 4x4, 5.7 liter hemi stalled while driving. the problem occurred within 3 minutes of filling gas tank and while slowing to make a left turn. since then vehicle has stalled within several minutes of each fill-up, (once while still at the pump) a total of 4 times. car has restarted almost immediately and problem only occurs after removing and replacing gas cap. *tr
Check engine light is on. strong smell of gas when vehicle is shut off. vehicle stalls at slow speeds. can't tell the engine quit as the rpms bottom out and engine dies. very dangerous for driving. no control after the engine stops. this happened twice today. first time was in traffic in a town at a stop light. couldn't restart the engine for awhile and couldn't get the truck out of traffic. second time slowed to turn around in a driveway entrance and backed up when i came to a stop to shift to d the engine stalled and i didn't know it. my truck was at an angle crossing 2 lanes of traffic. luckily, i was able to get it restarted. i googled the problem and it seems to be very common and dangerous with limited success on finding a repair solution. *tr
While traveling 60mph on my ram 04 hemi experienced a vibration which resulted in the vehicle running rough. broke 2 valve springs costing over $900 to repair. i've also experienced the sudden stalling and leaks from power steering lines. *tr
My 2004 dodge ram 1500 pick up with a 5.7 liter engine began to stall upon braking and coming to a stop. the engine would lose rpm and die (stall) leaving me with no brakes or steering. it would restart easily but occur again frequently. took the vehicle to a repair shop and after extensive and expensive diagnosis was found to have a failing throttle body and associated electrical failure. a new throttle body was obtained from dodge (different part number from original) and installed. total cost for the work was approximately $2,500.00. my research shows that this problem is extensive in this model and is dangerous.
2004 dodge ram 4.7l i was driving my vehicle from school, when without warning the engine stalled! was able to start it up and get it home! my mechanic has just informed me that the computer went out causing a gas buildup in which one of my valves was bent. the truck has 98000miles and as i've read online its very common for this to happen! its very dangerous because when it stalls u have no control! not to mention very frustrating and expensive. *tr
Dodge ram 1500 truck just shuts off when braking or turning. you have to put it in neutral and restart it. this is going to cause a serious accident or injury to someone and dodge has not recalled the vehicle. we have seen numerous complaints on the internet about this same problem. we have called our dodge dealer and n one seems to know what to do. it has happened more than once in the past month. *tr
Had just filled gas tank fifteen minutes earlier. driving on mountain rd. slowed for curve and engine quit, almost ran into logging truck headon. this has happened several times after fillup. once while driving 65 mph on freeway. slowed to let another vehicle in front of me and engine quite as soon as i touched the brakes. when i fill gas tank it usually die at first stop. does this until i have used up some of the gas. have asked dealer who sold the truck to me to look into this several times before i get killed. no response. i no longer drive that road just after fill up. have checked the internet and found that several 1500 ram owners have had the same problem. it will be like the ignition switch problem. people will have to get killed to get it fixed. *tr
2004 ram 1500 5.7 hemi stalls at low engine speeds, often at stop signs, traffic lights, or parking lot maneuvers. will usually start immediately back up, sometimes requires slight accelerator pressure when cranking in order to obtain self-sustaining engine speed. during decelerations, engine rpm is erratic and will often encounter a transient drop in rpm's to approximately 400 rpm before engine dies. issue seems to be more common and severe in cold weather, or when engine is cold, but has occurred under all conditions. this has been a persistent problem for about two years, happening anywhere from once a day to a dozen times. multiple dealerships and mechanics have looked at this, without result. the computer has been updated, the sensors, egr valve, and intake manifold cleaned, and the throttle body has been replaced. still not fixed. vehicle has been well maintained and has less than 55k miles. this is an expensive, dangerous, and frustrating condition. *tr
2004 dodge ram 4.7l automatic transmission. the design of the radiators with the plastic sides on the aluminum radiator core is defective. during the winter the radiator leaks on the passenger side near the coupling of the plastic to the aluminum. i think this is a safety concern since vehicles can overheat without proper anti-freeze levels, and leave owners stranded on the side of highways, and roads. let alone it's not good for the environment nor animals that enjoy the taste of anti-freeze. this is the second time this has happened to me with this truck. i replaced the radiator with the same type a year ago, and now it's doing the same thing as before. this is an o.e.m. radiator. *tr
Recently my ram 1500 has begun to stall for no reason. no check engine light will come on and no sputtering. just stalls when i slow down for a light or making a turn. it will usually starts right up and act like nothing happened. other times it will take about a minute to start. thankfully i have not been rear ended, yet.
2004 dodge 5.7 hemi engine has 2 dropped the valve in the number 6 piston on two separate engines, resulting in castrophic engine failure and needing to replace the motor. there are several complaints of this happening on edmunds .com. almost all of the engines are between 70,000 and 80,000 miles. dodge has not issued a recall to accept the defect and is costing their customers between 5k and 10k dollars an engine for those who do not now how to put the engine in. i am currently a dodge mechanic and have recognized this problem and would like to make it public. have brought this to chrysler corporation's attention with no result. the government needs to step in and do something about this because dodge is refusing there is an issue. *tr
2004 dodge ram 1500 slt hemi rack blowing seals this is going to kill someone 3 in 15000 miles i hope my wife is not driving with my son it is impossible to steer when this happens............ this problem is well know why is it not fixed its also very expensive. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 1500 quad. while driving at any speed, the contact noticed that the vehicle stalled after applying pressure to the brakes which caused the vehicle to lose power steering. the dealer was not notified. the manufacturer was informed and advised the contact that there were no recalls. the vehicle was not repaired. the current mileage was approximately 83,000. the failure mileage was approximately 82,000.
2004 dodge ram 1500, v8, stalls when pressing brake and releasing, coming to a stop at an intersection. also stalls sometimes when moving at a low speed, has stalled two times while driving down the middle of the road. usually starts back up, there has been a couple times that it does not start up. last time i checked, it is very dangerous to have your vehicle stall while driving down the road, stopping at an intersection, or, going at a low speed. someone is going to be killed! and no one seems to know the fix to this. i have replaced the egr valve and the brake switch, neither have worked. dodge needs to own up and fix this problem. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 1500. after changing the oil in the vehicle, the contact noticed that the oil was being burned at a quick rate. the oil was burning 1,000 miles for every quart. the vehicle was taken to an authorized daler where they were condcuting an oil evaluation. the contact called the manufacturer who stated that the problem was normal. the failure mileage was 70,984.
Engine stalls randomly for no reason. *tr
All model of the dodge 4.7 motor. motor stops running due to a prone sludge build up dodge will not recognize it as a motor failure . it is infact a design flaw dodge needs to address this someone is going to get killed breaking down on a highway or such. motor stops and it is impossible to steer or brake with the engine off at 65 mph. this really needs to be addressed. thousand of people are being stranded in need of please research. 2004 dodge ram 1500 slt with hemi 5.7 engine - 61k miles. until now i have been very happy with the truck. it is a pleasure truck and has never hauled anything. i have done eveything to maintain the truck perfectly. i had the gsr valve replaced as the check engine light came on. ever since then the truck just quits and stalls and has left me in very dangerous condition. i am afraid to drive the truck now. when it stalls it will not start or even turn over and has to be towed - twice now in a week. after some time the truck starts and the mechanics have been unable to find anything wrong. this truck is dangerous and i am afraid to drive on any interstate. what can i do?? *tr
I have a 2004 dodge 1500. on 18 feb 10 for no apparent reason truck started to overheat. i have not taken it to a dealer yet but i understand this is a problem that is starting to develop with this vehicle and currently dodge does not know what the issue is. several items have been replaced on these vehicles but so far nothing has helped. *tr
My 2004 dodge ram stalls. on four different occasions. the last two almost killing my girlfriend and me. after the first three, i took it to a mechanic and he replaced the cam and crank sensor. on the way home, it did it again. three of the four times it stalled while turning left and slowing down. this puts you in front of oncoming traffic. the last time i was on alert and still nearly died. there are no lights or warnings. *tr
Truck shuts off while driving - i had to stand on the brakes and steering was almost impossible. this happened while attempting to merge onto early morning traffic in i95 in ft lauderdale where everybody is going 70-75 mph. if that truck had hit me, i and several others around me would have died. we were just plain lucky. i had it towed to the dealer and they found nothing wrong. this happened about a dozen times and i kept fixing things which were not broken before i did a little research and found out this truck is famous for this problem. 2 dealers will not even return my calls when i start to discuss this problem. they either know about this problem and do not want to get involved or realize this cannot be fixed. i have to drive this vehicle across florida to bring it back to where i purchased it. my brother is flying down from boston to follow me in case i have trouble. if delaer gives me a negative response i am planning on suing chrysler and the dealer as i really believe they knew about this problem when they sold me the truck there are hundreds of others with the same exact issue with the same exact truck. why has nhtsa not done something? *cn

I have had to replace the water pump 5x in 2 years. the water pump was replaced, the fan and the fan clutch was replaced once during this time. no one seems to know why this keeps happening. *tr
I have the 2004 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi. the truck inconsistently stalls for no reason. sometimes after fueling up the motor will surge and sputter before stalling. most of the time the motor starts right back up only to stall again just a short time later. other times the motor will not restart for several minutes and attempts. it only stalls when traveling below 25mph and sitting at idle. i noticed it normally idles around 700rpm, but just before a stall it will dip to 500rpm and feel as it there is a slight miss in the motor. nothing i have tried has fixed this issue and the repair shops have failed to duplicate or diagnose this problem. after checking around i have noticed this seems to be a common problem and i think dodge should do something to fix this. whenever the engine fails i lose steering and brakes. last week it stalled on the interstate with no pull off room and it would not restart for several minutes nearly causing a rear end collision between a big rig and myself. this is a serious safety issue. *tr
2004 ram 1500 quad cab 5.7l hemi. engine suddenly stalls when it reaches temperature if the vehicle is decelerating (stop or turn). the engine appears to fail to switch correctly from high to low idle and goes right to zero. this results in immediate loss of steering and significant safety hazard. this has continued to occur more frequently with time and by the online descriptions is getting to be fairly common. *tr
Since 2004 my 2004 ram 1500 hemi has died numerous times (have dated, weather, time, and intersections). it is impossible to tell you how often because this engine has a mind of it's own. i have had my computer chip "flashed" by dodge dealerships at least twice and currently it is at tom matson dodge in auburn wa 98002 because in the last month has died four times. they called with a report today, "did not die on us, come back and pick it up". *tr
My truck stalls as i come to a stop. this happens probably about 4 times a month since the date above. the dealership hasn't been able to find the problem. i have read on forums online that a ton of other people are having the same problem. some say it has to do with erg valve and it should be recalled. they said they replace the egr valve and the problem is fixed.
My 2004 dodge ram 1500 4x4 5.7 liter hemi stalls inconsistently. this has happened several times over the last 3 years, on the highway and when slowing down at stop lights. the truck has always started right back up until yesterday. i was in traffic, going about 30 mph when it shut down. i tried repeatedly to start the truck back up; it finally did after several tries. i learned that issue is synonymous with 2004 rams. we have already replaced the throttle body and egr valve. this is obviously a safety issue. we pull a horse trailer on regular bases and can not take the chance of someone hitting us due to stalling, let alone losing control of the vehicle. what an outrage that dodge doesn't take responsibility for this!! i love my truck, but now i am shopping for a new truck, not dodge, with a heavy heart. *tr
Braking on the highway led to engine stall and full loss of power to vehicle. vehicle stalled in left lane and nearly caused a crash. also, rack and pinion steering began to fail at 50,000 miles. replaced at 54,000. *tr
Ea05018 i don't feel that this complaint should have been closed. this started happening on my truck and it is a serious safety concern. i have had 2 very near misses when the vehicle stalls and i lose power steering going around a corner. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 1500. while coasting across railroad tracks, the vehicle stalled when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the vehicle restarted within minutes of stalling. there was electrical power, but the engine was not running. there were no warning indicators illuminated prior to the failure. the failure has occurred at least three times within the last two years, in which the dealer reprogrammed the powertrain control module. the failure mileage was 44,000. updated 3/3/09 *cn the consumer stated the engine would always start up after it stalled. updated 03/04/09. *jb
Oil coolant lines can leak resulting in oil contacting engine and starting possible fire. oil coolant lines should be replaced by the dealer free of charge, as this is a problem across all the range of 2004-2006 dodge ram srt-10 trucks. *tr
Yesterday for no apparent reason my 2004 dodge ram 1500 died on a busy road with no warning. and would not restart. this truck has on several occasions when coming to a stop decided to stop running. (4-5 times in 2 years)until yesterday i would turn the switch off then restart and i would be okay until the next time the engine was checked for codes but none were found. after reading other problems on your site why has this issue not been solved? someone should be held accountable "dodge" and the public safety should be #1 concern...... i await your response to this not so uncommon problem with shutdowns & stalling engines. *tr
When truck idles the engine cuts off. this happens about once every 20 mile trip. truck has been in for repair with nothing found.
Engine failure. on several occasions the engine would stall upon acceleration. my 2004 dodge ram 1500 stalled on me after driving onto a patch of ice causing my steering wheel to become difficult to steer and the truck started sliding down an icy street, off the road and down a mountain until it came to a stop on a tree. since the truck stalled and i was not able to restart it in time. the truck is now a total loss. the frame bent in the front drivers area of the truck, the steering became lose and the back passenger quarter panel is damaged which will not allow the tail gate to come down. *tr
2004 dodge ram. stalled 3 separate times before dealer could find diagnostic reading to repair in 2005. the last time my truck died on an on ramp in traffic and the dealer had to tow it. dealer replaced computer. august 2008 6:50am left to take children to school in extremely bad rainy weather. we were several miles up the road from our home and as i slowed to make a right hand turn i heard a loud whining noise and my truck turned off. i could not turn the steering wheel, had no lights , windshield wipers, brakes, nothing. the gear shift would not move to put back in park to try to restart. we had to sit in the road for several minutes before i could put it in park and it started. it was like the key was not in the ignition. the power steering wasn't out, the steering wheel was locked as were the brakes. i called the local dodge dealer at 7:30am and was told to bring the truck in. i took my truck in at 8:30 am and as of 5:11 pm they can not find a code on the trucks computer as before in 2005. this is the 4th time on this same truck that it has shut down while driving and the second time they have had to fix it. i am not sure what they are going to do at this time because they said they can't find a code on the computer and are suggesting i pick it back up and continue to drive it until it does it again. this is a very dangerous situation that should be addressed before someone is injured or killed. *tr
1)left house in morning found while driving down rd truck was blowing white smoke from tailpipe 2)truck cuts off due to water leaking into cylinder#1 3)dealer service dept> found the head gasket was damaged and was amazed with just at 80,000 miles a damaged head gasket in the shape it is looks like it was not seated correctly. *tr
My truck, a 2004 dodge ram 5.7 litre, stalls without any warning. it has happened twice now. causes a loss of power steering but all of my electrical stays on. there is no warning light on my dash. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 1500. during acceleration and deceleration at any speed, the vehicle would stall and then immediately restart. the engine warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel prior to the failure. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the egr was potentially causing the failure, but was not certain. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure and current mileages were 73,000.
Egr malfunction at 29,800 miles just bought from dealer at 28,500 find it hard to believe an egr valve can fail at this mileage and isn't covered under emissions warranty. *tr
5.7 engine stalls, no warning, when slowing down. causes loss of power steering. *tr
I have a 2004 dodge ram with the 5.7 hemi motor. the engine stalls and dies for no reason when i am slowing down and preparing to turn. *tr
I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7l hemi v-8, and everytime i turn my truck wheel my truck ends up stalling. it stalls and idles down for no reason. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 1500. while driving 15 mph, the vehicle would stall when turning or while stopped. the power steering would fail and no warning lights were present. the failure only occurred in cold weather. the dealer inspected the vehicle and found no failures. the purchase date was unknown. the current mileage was 26,250 and failure mileage was approximately 25,500.
I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7 liter with 48k miles that has had numerous problems (e.g. erg valve replaced, power steering reservoir (currently being replaced), and engine stalling at an idle, while turning, while backing up, or coasting. the stalling occurs out of the blue as if someone flipped a switch causing the engine to die. the electrical stays on, just the engine dies. most of the time it starts right back up but sometimes it takes awhile. the stalling has happened numerous times and is very unpredictable. the stalling began about three - four months ago. i currently have it in for repairs at lee's summit dodge, lee's summit missouri. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 1500. the vehicle stalled when it was completely stopped on three occasions. on four occasions, while driving between 10-40 mph, the vehicle stalled again. the dealer stated twice that nothing was wrong with the vehicle and could not determine the cause of failure. the current mileage was 72,000 and failure mileage was 40,000.
