Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 1995 Dodge Neon

Peeling paint on my 1995 dodge neon. i am on my third transmission, replaced air conditioner because of smoke under hood, brakes, rotors, fuel leaking, valve cover gasket, head gasket, no oil in engine had it towed. i also in the time i own my neon i have had all kinds of problems. after replacing all this i only had one recall sent to me on the steering coupler. i had that fixed at the dealer. but, i haven't had any other recalls sent to me. 2 transmissions and alot of money spent on a lemon. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle was parked in a school zone when the contact was asked to move the vehicle off school property due to excessive gas leaking and the potential for starting a fire on school property. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who determined the vehicle was leaking gas and brake fluid and that the repairs should be covered under nhtsa recall#96v228000, regarding service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:hoses,lines/piping, and fittings. the vehicle was than towed to the local dealer who determined that the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin. the vehicle was currently at the dealer waiting further examination and repairs.

The rear brake line on the vehicle was so rusted that when i applied the brakes to make a left turn, the line broke and the brakes failed. luckily i was not stopping for a child, stop light, or obstruction and did not experience a crash. the nhtsa should seriously consider having chrysler issue a safety recall and make notice publicly so that all owners of this make, model, year vehicle are advised and can then have their brake lines inspected and fixed. *nm

Dt: the contact states there is a nhtsa recall campaign 96v228000 concerning the abs brakes. this vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall, but it is not included in the recall due to vin. no repairs have been made.*ak

Dt: the caller said that brakes will not work one has to hit the brakes at the last minute. she said one can feel a pop, and then the brakes fail. she had to run into a ditch to keep form hitting someone. the police were called, and there a report was taken. there was a crash. there were injuries to the pedestrian. she said the hub assembly was bad and had it replaced. also, the tie rod wobbled and had it replaced. had another accident with the brakes when the car in front of stopped suddenly and brakes did not work. police came and a report was taken. the lady in the other vehicle was injured. dealer will take the car to dealer, and they will talk about it. manufacturer has not been contacted yet. caller said she was not informed about the problems the vehicle had when she bought it.*ak

Nhtsa campaign 96v228000; daimler chrysler issued a brake/fuel line recall. this vehicle was not included in the recall, but has developed corrosion on the brake lines, which has caused them not to operate. the vin was outside the remedy scope.

The driver applied the brakes and pedal went to the floor. driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove home. the next day. no braking power at all. vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the brake line hoses and other parts needed to be replaced. *ak

Steel brake lines to rear wheels badly corroded. one corroded through, causing brake failure.*ak

Consumer received recall 96v228000 concerning brake line failure. while driving vehicle experienced brake failure. there was corrosion. consumer contacted the dealer. however, the problem recurred. *ak

On august 12th while driving on scatterfield dr, an area of high construction, my 1995 dodge neon suddenly stalled and quit right in the middle of traffic. i had a full tank of gas so i knew that was not the problem and luckily it was a construction area and traffic was moving rather slowly. i was able to pull off the road and the car would not start so i caledl peyton well auto at (765) 644-1111, who on august 11th had just repaired my car for similar problems that included my battery light coming on and then the car may or maynot start.they sent a tow truck to get me. a month earlier the car stalled and just quit and i had it towed to this same dealership who charged me 300.00 to fix the electrical suspension and harness. on august the 11th i was told it was the starter and that cost me another 300.00. after researching the recall list i found recall information # 94v033000 that identifies powertrain control module problems that should be replaced. this was obviously never completed on this vehicle. i am scared to drive the vehicle. the peyton well service advisor ben woodfill stated if anything like this happened again they would fix it for free but this was after telling me that the main harness to the motor needed replacing and that they had found some corrosion on another electical part and cleaned it up on august 12th. my fiance spoke with the service advisor and stated that we were under the impression the problem was fixed the first time when we had it towed in but now they were telling us that it would cost and additional 700.00 to get this so called main harness replaced. it was then that mr. woodfill confered with his manager and they stated they would fix anymore problems like the ones i have had for free. to me this is unacceptable. if they know there is aready a problem then why not go ahead and fix it. don't wait until my car stalls in 65 mph traffic and it is too late. please help!!! *ak

While vehicle was parked consumer saw brake fluid leaking from the brake line. this problem caused the brake pedal to go to the floor when depressed, resulting in extended stopping distance. *ak

My daughter was driving my 1995 dodge neon when the steering wheel locked and caused her to have an accident. she was traveling at approx 35 - 40 mph .there were no abnormal weather or road conditions. suddenly the steering wheel jerked the car off the road towards the right, at that point she had a loss of steering and no control of the vehicle. she was not applying the brakes or making a turn, just driving along as she normally would. previosly we have had problems, serious problems with the antilock brake system failing. when applying the brakes on two separate occasions the front wheels locked up once causing a minor accident , the other just caused damage to the tires. the accident when the steering failed was fortunately a minor one . but could just as easily been a very serios possibly fatal. since at the time of the steering loss, there was no way to control the direction of the vehicle, which resulted in damage to a residential homeowners yard and personal property that was located in the yard. the vehicle came to rest between two trees because it was stopped by a tension wire attached to a telephone pole which was struck and became wrapped around the front left tire. if not for that she would have struck a concrete culvert only a few feet away.. we are presently involved in proceedings to have the citation she received dismissed due to faulty equipment. also i did inquire with dodge motor corp re safety recall info...which i was informed that my vehicle has no incomplete recall work , but i also received a car facts report from consumer guide stating that there was a recall and there is no information stating the work had been completed by dodge to correct the problem. which if it had been corrected the info would have been updated to show that. if you could please help me with this matter, and possibly save someone from this mess. also i have a friend who lost her arm from her 95 neon crash from steering failure of which i was unaware until after mine.*ak

The brakes on the car are just terrible. i bought the car in 2002, it was a 1995 neon dodge(best i could buy back then). but in less than a year since i've had the car i've had to have the air conditioner fixed one time, the paint is basically peeling off by itself, but the worst part are the brakes, i've had them changed three times in less than eight months. once i almost got in car accident because they failed on me. since i bought it in a small local dealer shop much could not be done, but i am looking foward to getting a better car with better safety features.

Transmission defective. when put into reverse it made a loud banging noise. shifted harshly from second to third gear. the head gasket blew and had to be replaced. the brakes squealed for no apparent reason. the camshaft seal leaked oil and had to be replaced. also, the valve cover gasket had to be replaced because of an oil leak. *tt

Applied brakes and pedal went to the floor. dealer determined that brake lines were leaking and needed to be replaced. there was recall 94v032000, but this vehicle was not affected due to vin. *ak *tt

While driving downhill, applied brakes and pedal went to the floor. brakes would not stop vehicle. had to use emergency brake to stop vehicle. dealer contacted. *ak chrysler service center informed consumer that vehicle was not within vin range for recall 94v026000. recall attached. *tt

My dodge neon sport failed to stop when i pressed the brake pedal. i pressed the pedal harder; the car did not stop. (there was plenty of pedal; the pedal did not go to the floor. i crashed into the vehicle in front of me.*ak

Brakes are continually experiencing excessive wear, consumer has replaced the brakes on several occasions since ownership, last repair on 3/17/01. *mjs

I am requesting an investigation due to the problems i am having with my neon. i have consulted with other neon owners and they too are having some of the same repair problems. i have spent more money on major repairs than the actual cost of this car. please inform me of any recalls on this vehicle. thank you. *ak

A fuel leak was present inside of vehicle. also, brakes made squeaking noise on right side off vehicle. dealership will be notified. *ak

Brakes failed due to power booster air leak, is recall but apparently not this model. *ak

I bought the car (1995) used in 1998. a few months later, the master cylinder went out in road construction nearly causing an accident. had to replace calipers, rotors, brakes and master cylinder. i had a warranty but was told it was not covered. it cost me 1000 dollars. two months later, i had to replace the brakes again. had continuous brake noise throughout the next year with a couple more added brake replacements. in dec. of 2000, had to replace brake booster. costing me another 500 dollars in repairs. i am scared to death to drive it. on jan. 12 of 2001 the abs light came on and stayed on. i called to see what the worst case scenario would be and i was told 1000 dollars to fix a sensor!!! i want dodge to pay for the on going brake problem. this is a very serious problem and should be addressed. i have come so close to getting into accidents from the failures of the brake system!! this is a life threatening safety feature that should never had any problems besides the normal wear and tear of the brakes. i am afraid to drive it. please respond and tell me if there have been any recalls. i was told there was a service bulletin on the brake booster and now i want dodge to pay for it. thank you.*ak

Only one side or area. front right side. ie one quarter of system, while driving heard dragging . manufacturer notified and not responsive to issue. manufacturer guide states only pads are normal replacement parts.

No summary listed for above vehicle. *ak

Gasket failures (head and transaxle) diagnosed by ultraviolet dye test. brake deficieny discovered in high speed commuter traffic with near collision. the frequency of the same complaints from many owners suggests that a large recall action is in order before many serious accidents result.

When applying brakes they would grind. also, would have to pump brakes. dealership replaced rotors and brakes pads. but, problem still continued. it has been three weeks. *ak possible engine failure caused oil to leak. the steering wheel vibrate and vehicle pulls. *yh

Was picking up speed ran off shoulder into gravel, turned to pull back and i could not steer, put on brakes and spun around and around across to the other side of road and turned completely around and was hit from behind.*ak

The malfunctioning of front brakes caused loss of vehicle control. mechanic stated that the front rotor was rusted and delaminated. had the lamination cracked completely, the front wheel would have locked up, causing complete loss of control. *ak *ml

Blown head gasket anlong with the front brakes needed replaced and the rear brakes leaking. the speedometer does not work. i know there may be extra miles on my car however most were highway due to allot of traveling so these parts to go out so soon are very dissapointing when i take excellent care of my car

While driving at 35 mph smelled smoke, and then saw the fire within the steering column. consumer pulled over, and the fire department came out and put out the fire. also, brakes operate intermittently, and there is a loud noise coming from the brakes. brakes fail to operate properly especially on wet days. brakes supposedly repaired under recall, now they are worse than before. *ak

Believed the design and materials used in the brake rotors are of poor quality.front rotors have been replaced on two occasions within 34,000 miles of wear. at 42,000 miles, they needs to be replaced again. nhtsa needs to investigate this matter asap. *ak

The engine light often comes on without a cause. it is so costly to check without an fix that i am thinking about not having it check anymore. the head gasket is a major problem on these cars. i do not have the money to fix it at this time. i am waiting for a call from dodge to see if they will help. this should be replaced at their cost. too many people have had this problem. the rotor and calipers problem was scary. i was applying my brakes when a crunch was heard. it became hard to keep control of the car. the camshaft seal came out of the head. i had to purchase a new one. i find it interesting that a lot of neon owners are having the same problems. i wish dodge would pull their share of the cost so trust could be restablished. thank you for your time, robyn knouff. *ak

One week after purchase, all oil was gone from car. dealer first replaced the oil pressure sending unit, kept leaking, then replaced the valve cover gasket, kept leaking, then replaced the cam seals. dealer assured me that it was not the head gasket. still leaking oil. took it to personal mechanic and it is the head gasket leaking. dealer has refused to refund purchase price or replace vehicle. this has been over a 2 month period. the vehicle also has very noisy brakes, especially when it has sat for an extended period of time (overnight). the car has a shaking and rattling in the steering column when going over bumps, especially at slow speeds. the dash board reflects on the windshield when it is sunny and the glare makes it very difficult to see at times.

While driving at 35 mph without and with no prior warning vehicle stalls and accelerates on its own. also upon applying the brakes, pedal is soft and the vehicle overheats and shuts down. *ak

Engine leaks oil. the brake pads wear out every 6 months & have to be changed. have taken to dealer & informed the leaking is from cracked engine head gasket. head gaskets needed to be replaced. *ak

While ehicle was parked in front of the house, somehow the vehicle rolled across the street, crossing over three yards, and rolling across driveways. gear was still in park position. also, consumer had problems with the brakes, which had to be repaired three to five times. *ak

When the brakes are applied, they would make noises after the pedal goes to the floor. vehicle would roll. brakes pumped to stop. mechanic said speed sensor on rear left defective. later, it was the right rear brakes. each time sensors replaced or repaired. the problem always returns. *ak

Head gasket failed. nlm

Dealer has replaced brake rotors 95; exhaust gasket off manifold 96,97,98; electrical emision control system96; engine head gasket and engine head 98; and all motor mounts. family dodge has honored all repairs under warranty. special note: when engine head and all motor mounts went bad at (approx. 42,000 miles not under warranty), gary barbera's chryslerland located at 7810 roosevelt blvd. phila., pa 19152, (215)333-3700 called chrysler and i was not charged for repair. *ak

While making a right turn steering went out, causing the consumer to run off the road. also, upon applying the brakes brake pedal went straight to the floorboard, causing the consumer to run into some brushes. consumer vehicle has been in for repairs three times, and there is still a promblem. dealer can't identify the promblem. *ak

Brakes malfunctioned. brakes squeak and are slugish.

Brakes are making loud noises and are not stopping vehicle. no further information. *ak

Premature wear of front brake rotors.

Within the last 8 months a/c compressor went out; the speed control surged, worked intermittently then stopped functioning; the left rear abs wheel speed sensor failed causing the system to work intermittently; the engine head gasket blew and my rear window blew out and shattered when i closed the door during 00f weather. presently i have had no response from the manufacturer stating the technicality of "out of warranty" "nothing we can do" deaf ears. i would greatly appreciate any assistance or suggestions on how i can proceed to recover some of my costs for repairing so many items that have failed within a short period of time.

Going 60mph when engine check light came on. vehicle started shaking. went to parking lot & lifted hood. smoke come from cooling bottle. engine light dimmed. towed to dealer & was told head gasket blew. also abs brakes failed to work when depressed quickly & vehicle skidded forward on dry pavement. *ak

Anti-lock brakes failed, causing vehicle collision.

While driving at 35 mph and applying the brakes, brakes went straight to the floorboard, causing the consumer to rear end another vehicle. *ak

Upon traveling at 15 mph on wet pavement and upon depressing the brake pedal the vehicle acclerated, causing the consumer to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in an accident. consumer states dealer has been contacted. please provide any additional details. *ak

When brakes are applied they resist. the dealer replaced the master cylinder 2 times and the brake shoes. *ak

Brakes failed and accident occurred.
