My 2004 durango had sat for 2 days in rainy weather. when attempting to start there was a loud bang or clunk. i attempted to start it again and when it started there was a loud tapping noise. i immediately shut it off. i looked around and under the car found a puddle of oil as well as 3 pieces of iron ,1with a chrysler symbol molded into it. apparently the engine hydro locked and threw a piston rod through the block. i had it towed to my local mechanic and he verified this was the case. checking various forums this is a common problem with 04 durangos with 5.7 hemis. many many incidents some while driving were reported. weak engine components as well as a poorly designed windshield cowl has contributed to the problem, which chrysler has denied. this is a safety issue as it could happen at any time at any speed. i hope something can be done. dodge should be held accountable for a poorly designed engine and cowl. thank you
I bought my 2004 durango in 2011 everytime it rains it stalls and acts like it wants to die same as when i am in a car wash it will idle rough and act like it wants to die no matter what speed you are going if it rains or is in any type of water it will stall and die on you and dealerships don't know what the problem is besides it needs a new motor i just hit 100 k on my car and it is getting worse the oil censor is defective to and they won't fix that either. *tr
This car ran perfect up until this happened. i went out to start it up one morning and on starting the engine broke a connecting rod on number 7 cylinder, ruining the engine .this is a common complaint with these 2004 durangos with the 5.7 hemi engine. im a retired mechanic with 31 years experience with the transit system in cincinnati, ohio. and i've never seen any engine do this kind of damage for lack of maintenance. this is nothing but poor quality control and cheap over seas parts in these early hemi engines .does someone have to get killed in order to force a recall on these engines???? *tr
I purchased the vehicle in 2009, within a 1 years, i noticed while driving during a heavy downpour the car would shake and sometimes stall out. i took it to the dealer in 2011 and they replaced the intake gaskets. i am now realing that this seems to be a common problem and should have had a recall on it.
On 2april i went to start the durango . did not even turn an it stopped. i thought it was a starter motor. i was told it was not it was in the engine. i went on line an found out that dodge had a problem with this engine(hemi). valve problem. i looked on line i saw all the trouble people had after 100,000 mi. dodge had a problem an did nothing till 2005. there has to be over a 100 people with this problem. chrysler will not do nothing. they cant do anything till there is a call back. my 2004 durango limited equipped with the hemi 5.7 liter engine developed a ticking sound and and failed while merging onto a highway fortunately i was able to avoid a accident. i later found out that this a frequent problem that occurs with the 5.7 hemi engine in this model year, how come nothing has been done to rectify this. the engine is a costly repair that chrysler doesn't want to acknowledge. *tt
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated that when starting the vehicle, an abnormal sound came from the engine and the vehicle would not start. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where a diagnostic was performed, which determined that the connecting rod was damaged. the dealer replaced the connecting rod however, the repair did not remedy the defect and the failure later recurred. the contact inspected the vehicle and discovered a two-inch hole in the engine block. the contact took the vehicle back to the dealer where the dealer indicated that the connecting rod was damaged and caused the two-inch hole in the engine block. the dealer replaced the engine as a repair. the failure mileage was 72,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while driving during inclement weather, the vehicle hesitated to drive on multiple occasions without warning. also, the vehicle failed to start occasionally. the contact was a mechanic and diagnosed that water seeped into the motor and caused the motor to fail. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 96,000.
Purchased my hemi dodge durango 2004, with approx. 90,000 miles on it. only 20,000 miles into the purchase, turning from a complete stop accelerating into a 40 mph. lane at approx. 25-35 mph, (clunk) after hearing a loud thump, car would not move. towed to experienced maintenance, contacted my local chrysler maintenance dept., only option to resolve my matter was to replace my now dead 110,000 mile engine with a re built engine at a purchase price of $2,500/approx.70,000 miles. approx. 15,000 miles and only local driving (3 miles tops/per day), i am experienceing faults which lead me to believe, i will experience this unfortunate problem again. vehicle also, turns off in heavy rain, air bags alerts are faulty, stereo eqipment faulty, electical seating faulty. please advise. *tr
There is a problem with the dodge hemi 5.7l engine*** i have maintained my 2004 dodge durango immaculately, mechanically and physically. i purchased my durango in 2006 from a dealer with 36k miles on it. in 2010 with 155,000 miles on it, the push rod broke when i was on my was to the office. the truck was sitting in my driveway from the night before and when i went to start the engine, it made a loud popping noise and engine shutdown. i had the vehicle towed to a shop where it was confirmed the push rod had broken, oil changed on regular basis, etc.. i had the engine replaced in nov 2010 with another dodge hemi 5.7 l hemi engine. over 3 years later guess what????????? the replaced dodge hemi engine blew on me in the same driveway 3 years later december 5, 2013. i am posting this note to other owners to steer clear of replacing the engine as it will happen again, it is not a matter of if, but when. as of december 2013 my dodge has been sitting at the shop i had it towed to and i refuse to buy another engine. one consistent issue which i have read from the other complaints is that the engine would hard idle (act like it would stall) during heavy rain storms. i am pissed because i have a excellent conditioned vehicle appearance and mechanically i am out of a vehicle. fortunately/unfortunately the vehicle is paid for. i am going to lodge another complaint with the nhtsa. it is unbelievable so many people have the exact same issue with this engine. how can we get chrsyler/dodge to own this problem and make it's owners of its dodge durango's whole for fixing this recurring problem. i am a perfect example of replacing the engine in this vehicle once, and 3 years later the exact issue has occurred again!!!!!!!!! *tr
I pulled out of my apartment and began to accelerate up an incline. i heard a loud thump, all of the lights on the dash flashed and the car died right there approximately 60 yards from my door. after having it towed all over the place, i was informed that my engine had seized. i was very confused because i am always adamant about maintaining the vehicle and all of the regular work had been done. dodge would do nothing because the vehicle's warranty had expired. because i still owed money, i was forced to pay over $6,000 getting a replacement engine. separate incident 08/17/2013 started vehicle after work. got to work fine with no indications of trouble, engine was shaking violently, thick smoke sputtering from tail pipe. reading engine codes saying fuel injector open. spent 200 getting injection system checked with no success. mechanic saying that the computer system is bad in the vehicle which is likely to cost upwards of $1000 from dodge. bottom line, this product is a complete disgrace, and i feel like the thousands of people affected by this terrible product should be compensated. i have almost had to pay for this car all over again with the time and money i have had to invest in repairs. *tr
The rh side of the exhaust manifold continuously has an exhaust leak!
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated while driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact coasted to the side of the road. the vehicle restarted within a few minutes; however, the failure recurred. the contact stated the failure occurred whenever it rained. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and was advised that the wiper cowl needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. the failure mileage was 92,000.
My 2004 dodge durango has stalled on me 6 times now without 'any warning', it simply shuts off and i have no control over the vehicle. the first two times it happened, we dismissed as some weird 'fluke', as the two times were about a year apart, so we never thought much about it. when it happened for the third time we realized something was most definitely wrong. we were shocked to see how many people were having the same problem, when we began to research the problem on line. right after it happened the 3rd time, we took it in to our local mechanic; who indicated that it might be part of a faulty cluster problem that had been recalled. they replaced the cluster, and i felt so much better and safer. approximately 4 months later, it happened again! i sent an email to the service department of the dealership to tell them what i experienced, after several unanswered emails and 4 months later, i decided that i needed to go in person. just this weekend, before i went; it happened again as i was entering the freeway. i am scared to death to drive this durango anywhere but on the side streets now. i had a child in my car when this occurred this past weekend, and they were very scared. each time it has occurred has been at a slow rate of speed and always making a right turn. it is extremely frightening to lose complete control of your vehicle, and it is only matter of time before someone is going to die or cause a horrible accident when this shut down occurs. why is chrysler/dodge not being made to address this problem? i was shocked to see still more complaints about this problem, the most recent was june 12, 2012 however these concerns are dating back to 2005! what needs to happen before this situation can be addressed and dealt with appropriately. this is not a small problem, this is a problem with potentially life threatening consequences, and no one is doing anything about it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the engine stalled. the vehicle was able to restart and there was an abnormal noise. the contact mentioned that the failure occurred during rain weather conditions. the contact discovered that the engine was fractured. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
Vehicle dies when it rains or if you go through a car wash. the engine shuts off and all power is lost. this is a very well known problem of this vehicle, yet dodge has done nothing for it. it is extremely dangerous when it suddenly dies in traffic plus it is raining. we have taken it to several dodge dealers over the past five years, yet they claim they don't know how to fix it even though there is a service bulletin for it, but not a recall. *tr
My truck all of a sudden stop working with no warning. it only has 119,000 miles on it and it wont start. i would like to know if its apart of the recall. *tr
During medium/heavy rain the engine stalls badly or completely dies. also happens during car washes, though not a safety issue then- just aggravating! :( restarts only after rain subsides. this creates a very dangerous driving condition- for myself and those vehicles around me. my research shows this is a very common problem for this vehicle. despite countless complaints, it appears dodge has refused to acknowledge or address it for several years, alienating many previously loyal customers (this was a very popular suv). the factory waranty was expired/near to expire when most of us began to experience this so we had little recourse. as my vehicle was purchased new and has low miles for its age, i plan to keep it for the foreseeable future- circumstances permitting... thank you for letting me post my concern here! i hope something can be done to correct this very serious issue. long overdue! step up chrysler and stand behind your product. thank you again for giving attention to my concern. :) *tr
The car stalls out in rainy conditions and completely dies in car wash. problem can be reproduced every single time in wet conditions.very dangerous at high speeds and could cause accidents. *tr
