Problems with 2004 Dodge Durango ENGINE

On average, the 2004 Dodge Durango starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 121 570 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2004 Dodge Durango

My engine shuts off while i am driving my vehicle . without warning. this has happened on several occasions. the vehicle comes to a complete stop when it shuts off.

Went to go start durango & heard a loud boom, & now it seems to be knocking & not drivable now, after do research online we cam across that on these models (2004 dodge durango 5.7 hemi magnums) it seems too leak water into where the engine is due to hood manifold is designed horribly & water leaks on wires, spark, plugs, engine etc. etc. we've noticed when we drove in the rain or even going through a carwash that the durango would sputter as if it was going to die & it has a couple times & took about 15 mins to start again, after this event has happened we thank god that it happened at home & not on the interstate around other vehicles because this is a serious safely issue that needs to be addressed & now we are out of a vehicle at the moment and we are still currently making payments on this vehicle for another year and a half at-least.

Early morning after a heavy rain the vehicle was started and an extremely loud banging noise was coming from the engine. all fluids were maintained. the vehicle was parked on a city street.

Vehicle will die without warning you hole driving causing a serious risk for collision. engine stops running and is very hard to steer or stop with no power.

I was getting gas and as i pulled out of the gas station i was getting a load ticking noise. to find out later my 5.7 himi lifter and cam shafts needs to be replaced. i get a regular oil change and filter change. i am not sure why this is happening but i did see that this is normal and 5.7 himis dodge durangos and not understanding why it hasn't been recalled. i'm a mother of 3 little ones and i'm terrified we can get stranded if my engine decides to go out due to this issue.

I have experienced this incident several times. when it rains really hard or when the car is taken through the car wash, some how the water reaches the motor. it will start acting up (stalling) and have trouble "going." it will then trigger a check engine light and the motor will die. i have had the check engine light checked while on and spark plugs replaced per the check engine light. it is very difficult to plan any type of trip with the threat of rain while driving for fear of breaking down. the car wash will completely kill the motor and takes several times to re crank. once the car is dry, it runs perfectly. i have red several similar issues online.

Bought the car used in 2014. always had misfire/rough running problems in heavy rain or a car wash. in may 2019, driving in the rain, the engine failed catastrophically. research on line and my own repairs discovered a flaw in the first generation cowl grill. it allowed water to flood the top of the engine. a leak in the intake manifold gaskets allowed the water to enter the engine, causing it to hydrolock. it broke a connecting rod. it did however still run, but was very noisy. the intake leak was not noticed in any other conditions, nor was the check engine lamp on prior to this event. the engine did not use oil or make any other noises prior to this event. it has about 175000 miles.

I was going 45 miles an hour with all my 4 children and husband in vehicle when without warning the vehicle shut off. there is no code vehicle loses power steering and brake function and you have to shut vehicle down and restart to gain control again. this has happened 7 times! there is no code being given no one can diagnose this issue i have been everywhere and been told that no one can do anything for me this is ridiculous i have seen this problem spread all over dodge for you and i cannot believe that this is not a recall a whole family my family almost died multiple times because of its end this is not right that there is not a recall on this this is serious there have been hundreds of near-death accidents because of this issue alone this needs to be looked into this needs to be taken seriously and dodge needs to be held accountable it has nothing to do with speed i was parked in my vehicle died this morning i'm fortunate that i was parked and not driving the last two times i was pulling out of a parking lot in front of some cars and it just died i had to turn on my flashers as quickly as possible so hopefully no one would hit me as i was dead in the road the fact that i can't just take this to a shop because there's absolutely no indication of what's going on there's no warning when this happens there is no code after this happens i don't feel safe hundreds thousands of others do not feel safe and nothing has been done about this i am terrified to put my family in a family vehicle are only family vehicle because we have gotten lucky up until this point but i don't see that look holding out for much longer somebody needs to look into this and somebody needs to hold dodge accountable.

I am original owner and love my durango but since i have owned it i cannot drive in rain. the vehicle sputters and dies and check engine light comes on. i found several places online of people with same complaint and the issue is the original cowl. i looked and mine does not have a taller ridge around the wiper bolts or a ridge to divert the water from running into my engine. i need the 2nd generation cowl that was improved part #55362453ak our family always buys dodge, my husband has the 1500 truck as well as my daughter. i don't understand why dodge has not put a recall out on this issues that so many are complaining about. i have taken my durango several times to the service dept. and they could never find the problem but online after seeing everyone with same issue and how they are repairing i know i need this part. i ran water directly over the windshield and as it went over the existing cowl it did indeed dump into my engine and started sputtering and shut off. i tried to find the part but they are costing $180 with shipping and another $130 to have installed. i need this part like so many other dodge owners and there should have been a recall for this ongoing issue. it is not safe for us because the vehicles stall in traffic and we have to avoid collisions with other drivers as well as creating traffic jams. i have to keep my vehicle parked under a roof to avoid rain and i cannot drive when it is raining. this has been an ongoing issues since i have owned from 2004 to present.

Blew a hole in the side of the engine block with a failed rod/piston on a slow right turn .... always took meticulous care of the engine... 5.7 hemi should have lasted 250k to 300k miles.... it blew at 130k miles.

2004 dodge durango 5.7 hemi these vehicles are shutting off without warning no steering, brakes lights, hazards, nothing is operable vehicle doesn't stutter or stall at all no waring lights just shuts right off multiple people are reporting the exact same problem this is a serious defect as there aren't any codes or signs of failure

After a night of raining i started up my vehicle to a terrible knocking sound. blown motor due to defective cowl allowing water to lay on top of intake. and sucked through intake gaskets.causing a hydraulic and blown motor. comprehensive insurance said mechanical failure. internet says enough about this viehicle. rods through the block upon ignition.

My vehicle stalls in the rain. it stalls at a stop or rolling speeds. it idles rough first and then stalls or shuts off. sometimes the check engine light will come on, but not always. this only occurs in the rain. i've had several mechanics look at it, and they can't figure out how to solve the problem. i've spent a lot of money trying to get this fixed. through online research, i've discovered that many other durango owners are experiencing this same issue.

My 2004 dodge durango has the 5.7 hemi. during heavy rains the engine would start to run rough and the electrical system shut down on me three different times in the middle of driving due to the rain. during this electrical shutdown steering was impossible and i would have to stop the vehicle in the middle of traffic. the vehicle did this to me one time in the middle of turning at an intersection. fortunately no accident occured. i found that the issue was being caused by a faulty seal at the wiper cowl. this leak later blew my engine as the water leak found it's way into the cylinders and blew a piston rod. i was told that this defect has been reported to chrysler by hundreds of people.

The vehicle would always drive rough whenever it rained and would even die when going through a car wash. if it started raining while in traffic, i had to keep my foot on the brake and the gas when coming to a stop otherwise the vehicle would stall. after raining all night, i came to start my vehicle in the morning and it only made a terrible clunking noise without starting. luckily, i was not driving in traffic when the vehicle decided to stop running due to rain, something that a vehicle should not irregularly and suddenly shut off over.

2004 dodge durango. consumer writes in regards to engine failure. *ld the consumer stated the engine needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified and did not offer any assistance due to the vehicle being out of warranty. *js

I purchased my '04 durango in 2014 with 70,000 miles on it and just paid it off last month. i haven't even received the title yet but yet i have a truck that doesn't run anymore. about a week or so ago i went out to start my truck and the engine began to knock very loudly. we had a small rain/snow event the night before and the truck had been sitting outside in the elements. i immediately turned off the truck and went back inside to make some calls and get on the internet. i found out that there has been an ongoing issue with this truck concerning water leaking into the engine causing it to hydrolock the engine causing catastrophic engine failure/ engine replacement. prior to this, i had issues with the truck concerning idling and/or stalling during the rain or when going through a car wash. i read so many comments from fellow vehicle owners that have experienced this issue and have had to replace the engine. there is no other fix. the estimated fix for this is a new/used engine costing thousands of dollars (i was quoted 7000, i only paid 10,000 for the truck when i bought it). i had a mechanic come look at it and he said the truck dropped a valve, it was cylinder #3. my engine has just over 113,000 miles on it. there is no reason i should have to replace an engine at this mileage. none whatsoever. delving into the issue it seems as if there is a replacement part (cowl fitting) that needs to be replaced that dodge/chrysler never issued a recall for although they knew there was an issue and it was causing its engines to blow rods and suffer irreparable damage. if i had known that this i would never ever have bought it especially from a company that doesn't correct their mistakes even when they know about them. i have never owned a dodge before and i will never buy another again or recommend them to others. they should stand by their product

Takara recall i put oil on the engine constantly as i dont know wheres is going through. no smoke or leak.

Has had problems with engine on durango 4.7l overheating, i drive 15 minutes to work when its warm outside and its already overheating, ive checked various forums online each one had numerous people complaining about the same issue, with all the people complaining i figured dodge would find a solution, or figured someone would file a class action suit, but nothing has been done.

Car has a new engine and third water pump. it failed after 5000 miles and engulfed in flames causing the failure of the belt, tensioner, main drive pulley and ac compressor. today dodge just recalled these pumps for the very same reason bearing failure and super hot conditions causing fires and failure. i was just redriving along the truck has been running well and showed no signs of issues, no noise, smell, lights or struggle. car was at normal opperating tempurture and daytime traffic. stopped for gas stayed for a couple minutes then drive on, within two miles without any warning or noise the car started smoking pulled over and smelled a rubber notices no leaks in the water delivery system oil, trans, or power steering, the belt was red hot and smelled like a house fire car was taken 200 yards to pep boys and repaired at the cost of $1300. should not happen with 5000 miles on the water pump and 20,0000 on a new engine.

The windshield wiper cowling allows water to flow right over the entire engine and right into the intake. my dodge was sitting for 2 weeks during heavy rains and when i tried cranking it up for the first time, the engine hydrolocked.

Durango slt 5.7l v8 hemi engine hydro locked and threw a rod while the vehicle was parked. the hydro lock issue is widely reported with the 2004 first generation of the hemi engine. however, dodge does not acknowledge this manufacturing defect and safety issue.

04 durango slt 4.7 v8. rattling/rapping noise on start up that worsened through the day. noise coming from right side of engine bay. brought to mechanic and identified valve seat(s) in the aluminum head(s) have 'disintegrated' and/or 'dropped' causing the valves to slap on acceleration and multiple other catastrophic engine issues. fca (chrysler/dodge) has been notified of my complaint and they're fully aware of this fatal engine flaw in their late model v8 engines yet they refuse to acknowledge or even advise owners of repair options. they must be told to go good for this situation. this occurred at 110,000 miles. my options now are: a $2000 engine repair, $4000 engine replacement - or - to 'junk' the vehicle - don't get me started about the [xxx] rust on this thing, either... i feel ripped off from a few different angles here by chrysler/dodge and i know there are thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of fca owners out here who will never purchase another piece of [xxx]from these thieves. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

1. recall failed to repair air bag failure. currently - airbags are not functional (dash warning light). 2. at approximately 72,000 miles - vehicle began to show signs of rust through at both rear quarter panels and both rocker panels. by 85000 miles - complete body rust through failure was irreparable - vehicle was maintained exceptionally clean. 3. at 100000 miles - noted by way of mechanic that the engine was 'sludged up' to the point that the valve train was starved of lubrication and subsequently - the engine has encountered what appears to be a total catastrophic failure. valves, lash adjuster, piston rod or bearings may all be destroyed directly due to poor design and low quality components from fca. there are hundreds (thousands) of similar complaints across multiple media regarding this 'familiar' dodge engine breakdown. fca - of course - denies culpability citing poor user maintenance. i have records of all oil changes for the subject vehicle at 3000 mile intervals consistently from the date of purchase (5/2004), i say - 'fca? time to own up to this problem and do the right thing.

The windshield wiper cowl became defective and let water into the engine compartment, specifically the fuel intake manifold. after about 5 years of random water related stalls (rain, dew, car washes) which could never be replicated by numerous mechanics and therefore not properly diagnosed, water eventually found its way into a piston chamber. while on the freeway in san francisco on march 31,2017, hydrolock ensued and caused the number four piston rod to snap and break through the engine block destroying the engine. i was at the dodge dealership in colma a few weeks prior for an unrelated airbag recall fix and spoke to the a service supervisor about the water related stalling issue. he basically told me to go somewhere else because they only use oe parts and even if they could figure out the problem (no guarantee), they probably couldn't get original parts. he acted like he was doing me a favor! i feel as the dodge and the dealership is negligent. i have found out subsequently that this issue is widely know amongst parts suppliers (specifically used and rebuilt engine suppliers) and has a high rate of incidence according to various internet forums. i have lodged a formal notice/complaint with dodge as have many, many others. i got three quotes for replacing the engine, all were over $6000. the vehicle proved to not be wiorth that cost to fix. i have subsequently donated it to a local charity. this problem definitely deserves a recall, and customers such as myself who have incurred financial losses should be compensated. thanks

Driving at 30mph on city road the durango lost full power. no power steering, brakes or acceleration with gas. had to put durango in neutral and turn key off and back on. afterwards it was normal again. very dangerous and scared to drive with family in it. *tr

It was a raini day and decided to go to the store to get groceries. i was driving my vehicle to get to the store from my home to the whole foods in san francisco ca on freeway i-280 north near the exit on geneva i heard a loud noice coming from the engine compartment, so i decided to get out on the exit to see what was going on, i turn left on geneva av i waited on red light on geneva av and howth st when light turn green i let go the break and started to go so i can park on the street and all of the sudden i heard a loud sound and saw a lot of smoke so i pulled over on 33 geneva av san francisco ca and looked around and found pieces of the engine on the road and near the starter on the vehicle, this is when i knew it was done engine was broken and had to call aaa to get a tow truck. later i decided to do some research on what just happen and found that a lot of other people had problems on this vehicle just like i did.

I went to the dodge dealer and made the complaint and they couldn't figure it out and took it to midas and another car repair shop and they could figure it out and when i looked at it online it said it was the cowl so i went back to the dodge dealer and told them. they looked at me like i was crazy had to print off what everyone one had complained, so they replaced the rubber under the hood which was 40 dollars not that costly. but still when it rains, it runs rough and like it going to die. this is an accident waiting to happen. this should be a recall. when it first happened i was going to new york. very scary going through the mountains and it starting raining hard all of the sudden going 70 , drop to 30. trucks on my butt. not a good thing. still every time it rains hard it still happens. i bought this vehicle almost 3 yrs. ago for 10,000 with 80,000 miles on it. i have warranty and it's about over and no one can tell me what is wrong. so every time i bring it to a repair place i have to pay. this should be a recall. it's a life safety issue. so bascially i cant drive my car in heavy rain.

Gas and body issues: when you go to fill up the gas sprays out. i have a vert strong smell of gas and the lower finder by the wheel well has rusted badly. motor: whenever there is heavy rain, my car will stop running. most recently when i turn on the ac or heater the car stalls. i also just recently had to change out a manifold which caused another set of problems. i owned a durango before this one and loved it. this one has changed my mind and i will never own another.

My 2004 dodge durango suffered the catastrophic engine failure due to hydrolock from the poor cowl design. i live in bear country, if this had happened while i was in a remote area i could have easily been stranded with 800lbs of claws and teeth. i started the motor in my driveway during a light rain shower only to hear an obvious problem in the engine, it ran for 5 seconds then died. plenty of vehicles have been affected by this issue, but no recall has been issued. the 2012 hemi had a very similar issue and a recall was issued.

Recently when rain falls heavily the engine starts sputting & cuts off then engine light comes on. took it to mechanic & they put the machine on it. it shows nothing is wrong. put keeps doing it only when heavy rains falls. finally went online to all the other complaints to dodge & found out its the cowling. changed the cowling but its still doing it. its a dodge problem but they will not fix their problem & its costing me a lot of money. dodge needs to do something about this immediately

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact recieved notification of nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v770000 (air bags) and 15v313000 (air bags); however, the parts to do the repairs were unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs. also, the check engine light was illuminated. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was unknown. parts distribution disconnect.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while the vehicle was parked, it failed to start without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the push rod fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. whenever it rained or snowed, water leaked into the inside of the vehicle through the hood. the water entered the motor and caused the vehicle to stall and the engine to shut off without warning. the check engine indicator illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the water was leaking into the motor and the pistons, which caused them to fail. as a result, the motor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 200,000.

While driving in the rain all of a sudden there was a loud noise and my engine started knocking loudly. i was able to pull the engine and pull it apart and found there was water in the intake and the number 5 cylinder rod had broke. luckily the part that broke went down and the oil pan gasket/windage tray slowed it down enough to not go through the block. after further inspection i noticed that the intake gaskets were not sealing properly and allowed water to be sucked into the intake and then hydra locked the number 5 piston. when i put it together i noticed the "seal" on the cowl wasn't even touching the window and that let the rain go directly into the engine compartment and sit on the engine. put those two problems together with the rain and now i have a motor that is broken. i called dodge and the lady tried telling me that her "master" mechanic had never heard of this problem and yet when i typed in a search on this model and year that was the first thing that popped up. i know that this is a problem with the 2004 dodge durango. i have inserted pictures of their intake gaskets and then i held a ruler up to the intake flat and you can clearly see the light shining through the gasket which means that this was definitely not sealing. also i put a picture of the cowl seal and showed how cheap it is. also while we were waiting to get the funds to repair the engine it sat through the winter completely covered and the engine hadn't even been taken apart yet and when we pulled the intake off it was completely "full" of water which in turn filled the heads and the cylinders with water.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated that the engine compartment flooded in the rain causing the vehicle to stall without warning. the vehicle failed to start on numerous occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 125,000.

We were very happy with our durango until a few days ago. my husband and kids loaded up a few days before christmas to go drive up the mountain, they made just as far as the neighbors driveway when they heard a loud bang and were able to pull in to the driveway of a neighbor. the engine completly seized, all oil leaked out. the car has always been well maintained. no warning at all! a few days earlier i had drove it to town in the rain and it was idling rough, but the next day seemed fine. now the engine is shot. we have been having heavy rain for days and looks like water was leaking in to the engine due to a faulty cowl or something, which caused the engine to fail. we had just put brand new tires on the vehicle and just received new tags for it! all this with absolutely no warning! we are just out a vehicle and 2 days before christmas! had we known this was an issue we would have gladly done everything we could to fix it, but we have only had the vehicle for a few years and had no idea rain could cause our engine to seize up! thankful it happened close to home and no accident, but very scary when something like this happens!

While entering a highway and accelerating up to speed there was a loud bang, both heard and felt, followed by very rough engine operation. turned onto the first available side street and stopped the vehicle. while examining the vehicle and looking in through the driver's side front wheel well discovered a hole in the engine block. the crankshaft is visible through the hole.

Purchased vehicle in april 2013. first week fuel pump went out. in late 2013 replaced fuel pump again after it went out a second time. by now we realized that if we drove the vehicle in the rain or through a car wash it would shutter and cut off. in early 2014 the fuel pump went out again. we replaced fuel pump again and also cowl as we had found information that the cowl was allowing water to drip down on the engine and electrical box. this helped for about 14 months. in july 2015 replaced fuel pump twice. now it is november 2015 and as i type this it is back in the shop having the fuel pump replaced again. water is again leaking onto the engine and computer block. it causes shuttering and stalling and then within a short time the fuel pump goes out. driving down the road in the rain is terribly dangerous because there is no way to tell if the vehicle will shut off or not. i have contacted dodge and there is a technical safety bulletin about this issue, but no recall as of yet. a quick search shows hundreds of other dodge owners having the same issue. because most of the vehicles are no longer under warranty dodge has not address the issue as a whole. i hope it doesn't take someone or a family being killed before a recall is issued.

11/18/15. it was raining hard here in oregon as i was on my way back from taking my girlfriend to the doctors. i was first in line at an intersection. when the light turned green i proceeded. half way through the intersection, without warning, i heard a terrible repeating bang. my vehicle died and i was able to coast into a near parking lot. i had it towed to my mechanic and he took it apart and had found out the engine was shot. he reported to me, that he has had a few of these durangos lately with the same problem.

Engine blew. a rod or something blew without warning through the engine case as i was driving at 35 mph on straight road on a town street

After noticing a difference in driving power from a stop the rpm's would almost hit 2k before moving. engine light came on and said that i had a miss-fire in cylinder 8 and i needed a new ignition coil. bought new plugs and an ignition coil and proceeded to change them out. the drivers side of the engine plugs still looked clean and new. the passengers side were burnt, had moisture and the cylinder 8 plug was fouled and broke off in the engine. finished changing everything out and put the truck back together with still no change in codes or power. found that the starter was corroded and information concerning a bad cowl design causing hydro-locking of the engines. also replaced the exhaust gaskets 3 times in 5-6 year period each time with broken bolts found. changed out the pcm, then replaced all the injectors which were found to be cracked and swollen. the truck is still going into limp mode and turned my focus on the transmission (replaced as well) and still having cylinder 8 miss-fire codes.

2004 durango 5.7 every time we have a hard rain the motor stalls or runs extremely rough and we have to pull to the side of the road. i travel for work, and received a call from my wife that the durango would no crank over but was not caused by battery issue as it had just been replaced. had several people look at it and they said motor was locked up (had rained the night before). let it sit until i got home and it started up with a little kick back against starter. let it warm up and went and had the battery and starter checked, both were within specification for voltage and amp draw. drove on county hwy with 45 mile speed limit approx. three miles to the bank. leaving the bank made a right turn onto main street and the motor went thump, clunk, bang and died. coasted off road and looked under vehicle thinking we had thrown a belt or hit something. saw oil dripping from passenger side of motor and found a hole in the oil pan with part of the connecting rod sticking through it. i used to be a mechanic so i know what i was looking at. after doing research i have found that the rain gutter channels water onto the top of the motor where the plastic intake manifold has cracked allowing water into the motor, this water can become trapped in the intake manifold and be pulled into the motor while it is running and you are making a turn. talked to my local dodge dealer, they said they had never heard of such a problem but kindly told me $8000 to replace my motor. talked to the parts department and they did not have any information on an updated rain gutter, even though there appears to be a service bulletin on this problem. the number of complaints i have seen says to me that there should have been a recall on this problem as every thing i have read says it is quite common

If any water gets into engine compartment (rain, etc..) the engine will misfire (stationary) or shut off (stationary or driving). if driving while raining, the suv will misfire and may shut off while driving. the error seems to be well documented on the internet and became all to real this week when the car shut off at 70 mph on the highway while it was raining almost causing an accident and potentially killing my family.

Vehicle would stall during heavy rains and taking it through a car wash while driving. sometimes it would even cut off. one day it cut off and i had to have it towed to the dealership. i bought my vehicle brand new and this problem has been going on since then. goodyear could not determine the cause of the issue and the dodge dealership informed me that it was the fuel pump. so they replaced my fuel pump and the problem still occurs during heavy rains and going through the car wash. i replaced the battery a third time after contacting roadside assistance. now the vehicle is making a knocking sound. i'm afraid it's the engine. after researching, there are thousands of complaints about the issue with the wiper cowl leaking. there is a service bulletin 18-006-05 put out by chrysler.

Just purchased this vehicle two months ago from dealer in nj. we had a hard rain about a month ago, and the durango wouldn't start immediately. i turned it over again a few hours later and it started with a hard rumble, but it started up. it drove fine for about a month, and just as the wife and i were leaving a gas station, we drove about fifty feet and heard a loud bang. smoke was coming out of the passenger side of the engine, and the durango was making a noise like metal was rolling around in the engine. i stopped the car, pulling over to the side of the road. i looked under the durango and saw oil dripping out from the engine. i got under the car to inspect it a little further and saw a dime size hole in the engine block. i got the car towed back to my home as it was saturday and the mechanic was not open. the tow truck driver told me that this was the third durango he picked up that day. not saying that all of the other cars were towed because a blown engine, but you get the idea. dealer wouldn't warranty vehicle because of mileage. i couldn't get anyone to warranty the durango because of the mileage being over 150000. now im told i will have to buy a remanned/new engine for this clunker. i will be making a complaint to the manufacturer. i know it may not go anywhere. i have read all of the complaints here and on the internet, forums, etc. all the result of blown engines due to "hydro-locking", and the wiper cowl defect were water would get into the engine during heavy rains or car washes. i hope our government would intervene on behalf of its citizens and force chrysler to issue a recall or at least be responsible for a defect that they created, but i won't hold my breath. my durango currently has 160131 miles on it, and i guess it's gonna stay that way now because it can't move, and i still owe money on a suv that i cannot drive. nhtsa do the right thing.

It was a rainy day on friday oct. 2, 2015. that morning my vehicle started fine, it wasn't until i came out of work that evening when i went to start it the engine made a loud sound and it wouldn't start. i tried a few times until suddenly it turned on and it was making a knocking noise. i then called my mechanic and explained the situation and he told me to bring it to the shop so they can put it on a lift to take a look underneath. as i drove away the sound was unbearable and the faster i drove the louder it got, suddenly i heard a loud explosion and the vehicle stopped. it felt like the engine fell out, there was a lot of smoke and oil everywhere. i got the vehicle towed to the my mechanics shop for further diagnosing when they told me the engine blew out. the next day i got a call after they took the engine apart and told me the block had a hole because the piston blew through it. they told me it would cost more money to rebuild my original engine than buying a used one, i opted out on the used one. as i was home i went online and did some research when i come to find out that many people had the same problem happen to them with the same vehicle on a rainy day or when they took their car through a car wash. so as i did more research it turns out the wiper cowl which at some point chrysler came out with an upgrade tends to leak water on top of the intake manifold which is another bad design, then sucks in water into the engine eventually causing it to hydro lock. i bought my vehicle brand new in 2004 and now i'm disappointed they never issued a recall to fix this problem. i just paid over $4000 to repair it and god knows how long until this used engine goes out with the same problem. i filed a complaint with dodge and spoke to someone yesterday for them to tell me that my vehicle is out of warranty . please help me with this matter.

Bought this vehicle 3 months ago with just 52000 miles and running in good condition. during the weekend of 25th of september 2015 it rained and upon trying to turn on the vehicle to go to work on monday as usual, the motor/engine was hydrolocked. water had seeped into the cylinders and the motor suffered failure and broke rods. i had installed the newly redesigned cowl vent grille that was supposed to prevent this ,but it didn't work. dodge company is very well aware of their bad engineering but won't recall the vehicles and protect their customers. i just lost over 9000.00 dollars in investment, including taxes for 700.00 + getting the vehicle registration, inspected, tags, etc. the vehicle wasn't in motion when this happened. it was parked. not even their redesigned cowl vent grille prevents hydrolock, water from leaking into the intake manifold, from happening.

I have had this suv for just a few months the day i mad my first payment it went into the shop to be fixed. at first it was apparently my #5 piston shot thru the block with only 120,000 mile on it. than after spending the $3,700 to get that fixed it was still smoking and having issues. next thing i know it is now the intake manifold whitch was another $700.00 and it was 84 in back order when i seen that i pulled it up online were i read that thousans and thousands of people have had this same problem with the first year of the hemi motor in the durango. i have three small children and i support my kids and husband due to his spine surgerys. i feel if there has been this many parts go bad that it should have a recall with it. i cant afford to keep putting money in something that is still not going to drive properly with my children in it. it has shut off while driving the suv. it is not safe for my kids to be in im afraid they will be hurt or killed if it happens again. dodge needs to do the right thing and have thiss recalled as soon as they can. the vechile turned off while on a street thank god it was not on the free way.
