Started vehicle and heard a loud banging noise from the 5.7 hemi engine. took to a certified mechanic and learned that it had thrown a rod causing fatal damage to the motor. after conducting research this is a common issue that has not been addressed by dodge. supposedly they used insufficient metal quality when building this engine. they need to be held responsible for this well documented issue. i'm worried that others could experience an engine failure while driving resulting in a possible casualty. please advise others of this issue. *tr
I have a dodge durango 2004 hemi with approximately 124k miles on it. the car was driving fine for me and my family until this morning when i tried to start my car, it was making a loud noise like there was rocks in the engine. it doesn't start up like normal and if it does you can't even drive it. sounds like the engine is in pieces. i've heard a lot of dodge hemi owner's had a lot of problems with their engine seizing up while they were driving at high speeds and everything just completely shut off on them(very dangerous). a lot of forums that i read online has the exact same problem that i'm having. *tr
Truck cut out would not restart had stopped at an intersection needed to roll to the side of said intersection with no power steering brakes or engine. *tr
This morning i went to start my dodge durango and there was a loud bang from the engine. a connecting rod failed on the vehicle and now the engine is not repairable anymore. this is a big safety concern because this could have happened on the highway or in any other every day dangerous situation where the car would be inoperable. such a failure should not happen to a vehicle that has 95k on it. i feel that dodge should own up to a design flaw on the engine, because i have read a number of complaints on the internet about this exact failure at around the same mileage. i have gotten no support from dodge on this issue even calling their customer care only to hear that my car has too many miles for them to help me out. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated that she started the vehicle and heard a loud noise that sounded similar to several rocks being thrown around under the hood. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the engine would need to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. the vin was unavailable. the failure and current mileage was 137,000.
Went to the repair facility to have car looked at code p2302 came up when checking the computer was informed that would need a new pcm replaced with a new factory one and about 3 weeks ago light came back on and when trying to clear it the light blinks and just stays on both times the code p2302 came on the ignition coil for that cylinder was cracked and the plastic was melted. *tr
The vehicle, which was running fine the evening before this engine failure, was parked outside overnight in the rain. the next morning the vehicle was started and immediately started making loud mechanical noises. the vehicle was turned off immediately and a piece of the engine block was discoverd on the frame and a hole in the engine block was noticed. *tr
2004 dodge durango limited 5.7l hemi 4x4 my vehicle was already running for approx 3-5 minutes, warming up, after i had finished working a full 12-hour night shift. time is 0640 hrs, outside temp is approx 30 degrees. vehicle running normal, no alarms, no warning indicators. i was pulling out of driveway of my employment onto the roadway and accelerating on a completely straight roadway. as vehicle was passing 20-25mph and with no fore-warning, heard loud 'bang' from the engine compartment and vehicle started shaking. vehicle's reaction was immediate. violent vibrations, tappings and metal to metal sounds, i immediately shut down the engine and drifted off to side of road. my vehicle has never been pushed or worked hard. never hauled heavy loads or trailored. body is in very good condition and vehicle maintenance has always been performed on regular basis (approx 1000 miles into current oil change). at first i thought i had thrown the serpentine belt, but within seconds i knew it was much worse, shutting off the engine. two checks of the oil level, assured me that there was in fact oil in the engine. there were no external leaks found and there did not appear to be any oil/coolant mixing. after towing the vehicle, to my mechanic, they have since reported what they believe to be as a "catastrophic loss of the engine". i have reported this failure to chrysler corp. and they have opened a case number for me, but they have not made any commitment, if they will cover the failure. after some of my own investigating, i have discovered there are numerous complaints, of the exact same nature as my failure, with this identical make/model year and 5.7l hemi engine, with many failures occurring in the 80-120k mile range (my mileage 97k). very angry and upset about this failure, but thankful i was able to safely pull over without any further incident and injury. *tr
Went to start car (which ran perfectly well the night prior) and sounded like rocks under the hood. we have been very faithful with oil changes, in fact, had the oil changed just 3 days prior to incident, always done at the dealership, and regular maintenance completed. there were no engine lights or warnings. towed to dealership and informed that a rod was broken/thrown and damaged the long block. now looking at over $6000 for engine replacement. when finding that many others with same car/engine are having the same issues, i am extremely disappointed that a recall hasn't been done, or a consumer safety report issued. had this happened while i was driving, it could have been catastrophic. the manufacturer needs to pony up and deal with this issue. *tr
I parked the car on saturday evening, didn't drive it until monday morning. on monday morning, i started the car, and it sounded like a box of rocks in the engine compartment. i turned off my radio, and tried it again, with the same result. my husband came out, and told me that there was oil pouring out of under the car. the day and night prior to this incident, it had been raining a lot. normally, i park with the front of the car facing up hill, but had gotten home late, and just pulled straight into my parking spot which put the nose down. after this happened, i did some research on the internet, and saw that this was happening to many 2004 durango owners. i do feel somewhat lucky since my mileage was much higher than some of the other failure mileages. we have always maintained the durango, and had all work done at the dealership. i am so upset about the fact that i didn't drive my durango to its expected 300,000 to 400,000 mile range. i love this vehicle, and it was my graduation present from my husband. now, i have to figure out some other way to get my 5 kids and dogs camping! *tr
While driving the vehicle, it made a loud noise from the engine compartment, a loud banging noise was heard and the engine began to emit smoke filling up the truck cabin. there was very little visibility out the front window, at which time the truck was pulled to the side of the road, avoiding oncoming traffic. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while at a car wash, the vehicle suddenly lost power without warning. the vehicle restarted after several attempts; however, the failure recurred and the vehicle became inoperable. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the failure mileage was 150,000. the vin was not available.
While driving at highway speed in rain, the vehicle began making a loud, almost rough roaring sound and the vehicle started sputtering as if it were going to stall. after taking an exit to investigate, the vehicle died and took multiple attempts to restart. this has happened multiple times while driving and vehicle dies in auto car washes. after reading similar posts about this problem, i'm extremely concerned this could cause a crash with a high potential of death for me, my passengers and others that may become involved. *tr
Complete engine failure. from what i am reading and what my mechanic has told me, this is a common failure. besides the financial impact of this defective, faulty engine, it poses a safety hazard to the motoring public when the engine has a total and massive failure, especially if it happens at highway speeds. this vehicle should have a mandatory recall and dodge held responsible for the necessary repairs / replacements. *tr
The electrical portion started after i first purchased the vehicle. the issue worsened after someone broke into the vehicle. the car wouldn't stay charged, and i ended up needing a tow every other week. my car insurance went up to $550.00 a month. i was always stranded. the problem was worse in the rain. sometimes the car would cut off while driving, it did it once on the highway and i saw a semi coming down the highway and i thought i was dead. i got it started and pulled over to the shoulder because i didn't have enough speed to get out the way. eventually it couldn't' start anymore. i had it sitting for a year as i kept making loan payments. i fixed one thing after the other...thinking it was the problem...the car would start and die a few days later. this last time i changed the starter for the third time. a rod was thrown and the engine is locked. i wasn't even driving the vehicle, it started after 3rd starter was installed and a crunch noise sounded a few minutes later while trying to give the battery some juice. i towed it into another shop and they confirmed the engine is gone. i had to pay full coverage insurance because it's financed and a car note for a truck that's gone. i've searched online and dodge knows and hasn't taken responsibility. involuntary repossession would be futile because after the fee for repo, towing, storage..i will owe more than what i have left to pay, $5000.00 and still not even scrap metal. i've read so many discussion board post, consumer blogs on this model and 'm floored. i guess the complaints are recent because one you get to like 70,00 mile you are toast. i don't drive to work, only on the weekends and i take good care of my truck and now i have nothing but payments and metal that looks pretty on the outside. *tr
We were driving the car and suddenly it started making this loud noise under the hood and shook. i pulled over and turned off the car. i checked to see if the oil was ok and it was. there wasn't any leaking fluids. the vehicle was towed to our home and sits in the drive. any attempt to start it causes violent shaking loud noise. it struggles to idle and dies. *tr
How many more dodge durango 2004 is it going to take to investigate. chrysler is recalling 2012 vehicles for the same problem, what most of the complaints are about, engine failure, blown rod . is it going to taking someone getting killed to wake you up? seems like someone is not doing their job . doesn't anyone read the complaints other than other 2004 dodge owners? *tr
One day it ran fine then one morning went out to start and it sounded like rattling chains under hood. changed starter...didn't work. mechanic found metal in oil pan. so now we need to replace whole motor. in doing research on it, this is an extremely common problem that dodge refuses to fix. so now i have no way of getting my 4 children around to their sports and i have a 5th child due in 7 weeks. with no vehicle. thanks dodge. *tr
Wife was driving on highway and car completely shut down, engine, all power. no power steering, no power brakes, nothing. happened multiple times. last time, shut down on highway doing 60mph with multiple children in car. *tr
Auto drove properly previous day, started the engine at 6pm and it sounded like rocks in the engine. a puddle of oil was visible underneath the parked suv. car has been properly cared for, no warning lights on the dashboard ie: oil, engine light - just loud clanking and not drivable. edmunds and other auto information complaints are exactly like ours. this issue has been fixed in the 05 models but not in the 04. it rained a little earlier in the day and this video shows what is transpiring in the 04 models: hydrolock= broken rods http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_thrvtmlx4 chrysler needs to answer the hundreds of complaints that are documented. we cannot afford a new family car. thank you for your time and i hope that you help us find a solution and hold them accountable. *tr
My 2004 dodge durango limited stalls at slow speeds and when coming to a stop and also while making turns. have had at dealership and they cannot find out what is causing this since there are no engine codes. vehicle is becoming very dangerous to drive due to this issue. durango has a 5.7 hemi engine. why is there no recalls on this issue when it involves over four years of production? are we waiting on a incident like toyota had before we react? this has happened to durango's with mileage low to high. please help us now on this issue before it happens to you. thanks !

We bought this vehicle in aug 2012. the first time driving on the expressway to work in a heavy rain storm my durango wanted to stall every time i took my foot off the gas pedal. when i finally got off at the exit to the traffic light i of course was stopped the engine was shaking and trying to stall i had to keep my car in neutral and my other foot on the brake. when i finally got to work it did actually stall. after work that day it must've dried up enough because it started and ran fine. after researched we read you silicone the cowl which my husband did do and it didn't help at all. it has stalled several times now after you take your foot off the gas one time it stalled. in the car wash and wouldn't restart until a couple cranks later. this is an extreme safety hazard i can not drive with my foot always on the gas. we have asked the dealer several times and they pretend like we have no idea what we're talking about my husband even told them he'd be happy to drive it up there pour water on the windshield so they can see what's happening. could you please look into this i will be more than happy to let you drive my durango if you need a test vehicle. *tr
I was driving in the pouring rain and all of a sudden my durango started skipping and had a hesitation when giving the gas then stalled suddenly. had to pump gas to restart and continued stalling as soon as it restarted. per shop, 2004-2005 have defective cowl on windshield with huge gap. water is just pouring onto motor causing misfire. this is a known issue and dodge refuses to recall. i have contacted my local dodge dealer who has ordered the part however part has been back ordered for over a month. this is a very dangerous situation. not only is the vehicle stalling suddenly but once it stalls i lose my power steering and barely make it to the side of the road. since this started, i still feel a hesitation/skip in the motor when driving in dry condition. something needs to be done here. why isn't dodge being held responsible for these dangerous issues? *tr
2004 dodge durango bent rod # 7 chrysler dealership replaced bent rod. but said need new engine because they could not find out why the engine failed. many thousand of dollars were paid to fix and get on road again. not sure if this would happen again, nervous with three kids in car ages 2,5,6 am i going to kill or hurt my children driving them in this car???? happened again same bent rod 1 month after repair. on 2012 october. car sits in dealership for 8 months now. will not move car or drive car till someone tells me that it is safe to drive kids in it. they fluxed motor pressure tested it and still they do not know what is wrong. look at all the same complaints on line this is not just me!!! something is wrong! do my children need to die or someone elses family need to get hurt by one of these suv's before someone takes notice. please look in to this. Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated that when he started the vehicle, the vehicle exhibited an abnormal ticking noise. the vehicle was towed to a mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the lifters would need to be replaced. all sixteen lifters were replaced. after the repair was complete, the ticking noise could still be heard and the contact was advised by the mechanic that there was nothing that could be done about the noise. as the contact drove the vehicle, the oil warning light would illuminate whenever the contact would brake to a stop. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the engine would need replacing. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 172,000 and the current mileage was 179,000.
Main bearing spun and lifter stuck on engine. no warning sign with low oil light, no funny noises, the car just died on me after stopping at the bank and starting to pull away. with such a common problem why isn't dodge stepping up to help with these bad engines? it's a shame. *tr
Prior to the engine failure the motor would shut off during any heavy rain storm, then after one rain storm in july of 2012 the next morning went outside to start the truck the motor had locked up. took it to the garage and was told by the mechanic that dodge had a major design defect in the 2004-2005 durango that caused engine failure with rain water getting into the engine. so if that is the case then chrysler needs to refund everyone that has had these issue due to there mistake and not penalize the customers. *tr

Went grocery shopping night before. woke up next morning to go to breakfast. went to start durango. heard loud knocking and then it stalled got out and oil was spewing from under the engine. took it to mechanic and had to get a $5500 loan to replace the entire engine due to a thrown rod. *tr
Paid extra to get the 5.7 hemi that is supposed to last forever right, well now 3500 later we are finally getting a new motor put in it, i believe that dodge should be held responsible for this issue. went out to start it one morning and sounded like a gun shot, shot a rod clean through the oil pan, but worst part is it was still running, still will run, just sounds horrible. really think we should be reimbursed for the new engine. *tr
I was approx 1/10 of a mile down our local road when i heard a sudden explosion under the car. it sounded as if the tire blew. i immediately started pulling over but i continued to hear a rumble from the car. upon inspection, i noticed there was oil running down the front passenger tire. the mechanic has confirmed a thrown rod through the engine block. no previous warnings of issues with the 122,000 mile engine. car has been regularly maintained (but not at a dodge dealer). now i'm faced with a $6,000 bill to replace an engine that should have lasted another 100,000 miles. as i researched this on the internet i found that this has happened to numerous other owners of this model engine (5.7 l hemi 2004 dodge durango limited). no recall has been made on this engine although it is evident that this is a common, costly, dangerous manufacturing defect with their engine.

I started my car to go to work and the car was making a knocking sound. i had my husband check the oil and other fluids and they were fine. towed my car to a dealership repair shop and they said the engine threw a rod and was no good any more. i just paid 15,000 for this car 6 weeks before and now i have no vehicle. the warranty company said they would not cover it because there wasn't enough miles. i have been on a lot of different sites and they have numerous complaints for this. they have recalled other cars for this same reason. when you call dodge they just give you the run around. *tr
I have been battling with my 2004 dodge durango 5.7l hemi for years now. every time it would rain heavy, my vehicle acted as if it were going to die. it would get very jumpy, and i felt like i had to fight it to keep going. if i got stopped by a light or stop sign, it was horrible. my engine light would come on and sometimes stay on for a day or two. i brought it to different mechanics who could only fine a cylinder misfire when the engine light was actually still on. it seemed like it always went off as soon as i was able to get it to the mechanic. the mechanics were not able to recreate the problem i was having in order to view what the vehicle was doing. i had numerous plugs changed and nothing helped. it has since gotten worse, yet no one can figure it out. it now happens if i take it to the car wash. they are not able to start it after it comes out. they have to try a few times before they can get it going. i decided to do my own research to see if there are any others out there with this issue. i was surprised to find all the information i did and yet no mechanic can find a solution. i came to read about the hydrolock issue on this model. after reading all these complaints by everyone else, i can't believe there wouldn't be a recall on this! i have lived with this issue for at least 3 years dreading every time it rains heavy. it makes me panicked to drive my vehicle in any rain knowing the outcome of all these other people. i can't believe that dodge just let this go on, especially after all the complaints. i have 190,000 miles on it now, it is full of rust (which is another issue that should have been resolved...i have seen so many durangos with rust on the back door by the chrome above the license plate. it starts out as bubbling and just rusts away into big holes), and there is no point to replace the engine. this issue should be addressed by dodge.

One morning, at startup, the engine failed due to broken rod. all maintenance was always kept up and recorded. the vehicle was taken to local dodge dealership for inspection and all maintenance records were handed to them. upon inspection of the engine, the local service person told me i had a good case against dodge since the engine was in great condition and the rod should not have broken. the regional dodge inspector show up and inspected the engine and determined that the damage was due to lack of maintenance. i attempted to talk to the local service person that i had spoke with before but the dealership manager would not allow me to. the national dodge representative i was assigned called me and told me that the engine failed due to a water pump failure. the story changed. in either case, i was left with a large bill because of faulty engine parts that dodge (chrysler) uses on their vehicles. this has happened to thousands of other dodge durango hemi owners. *tr

Water is getting under the cowl and onto my motor. i have taken my 2004 hemi durango to several shops/dealers and the water is causing all kinds of problems. the cylinders are misfiring, some of the metal parts under the hood have rusted irreparably (ie. motor heat guards), the windshield gets ice on the inside of the vehicle, my headlights blink on and off while driving, the heat works only sometimes due to the wires under the passenger side dash getting wet, and this water getting through is also causing my car to stall or almost stall every time it rains or take it through a car wash. this water is causing electrical problems. it is also rusting horribly fast near the wheel wells and on the back trunk hatch. within only 2 weeks of cold weather i now have a solid hole from the rust. why can't they recall some parts and fix this? the dealer is no help, they only want to charge me huge amounts of money to repair problems that were factory defects. *tr

Car was cold, from sitting over night.went to start, and heard a bunch of clanging. i turned truck off immediately. went to crank engine over, and nothing. no noise, accept chimes from interior, and a slight noise from starter.i have worked for years around vehicles and repairs, and it sounded like something was stuck. i put gear shifter in nuetral, disconnected serpentine belt, and tried to manually turn engine at crankshaft. i could not get it to budge. when i looked up online, i was surprised to see how many people with this motor had it sieze, i called chrysler, and was told there was nothing they could do for me, being as it was out of warranty, and their was no recall. i don't understand how the government doesn't hold the car manufacturers to stricter standards ,for issues like this.i'm not any kind of a computer guru, and i've found hundreds of people with similar issue, online. would really be nice, to see chrysler have to make good for these faulty motors.[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
From the time i purchased this vehicle there was a problem with the engine (5.7l hemi). when driving in rain or going through an automatic car wash the engine would start missing and sometimes die. this would make the check engine light come on. i took the vehicle to dealers in both kentucky & north carolina and to various auto parts stores as well as independent mechanics. the diagnostics reader always showed misfire in #2 cylinder but no one could tell me what caused it. even though i kept the oil changed as well as other maintenance it started knocking and blew at 124,000 miles. i contacted dodge and they assured me that they knew of no problems with these vehicles. i replaced the engine with one from a wrecking yard with 60,000 miles. same problems with rain and car washes. it lasted 2 years and 21,000 miles. i contacted dodge and got the same reply. after researching on line it seems there are hundreds of people that have experienced the same problem that i have. i was one of the lucky ones. mine blew up in the driveway instead of on the highway. dodge seems to have remedied the problem in 2006 & later models but still won't admit that there is a major and potentially dangerous problem in the 2004 & 2005 models. i feel that dodge should have to repair these vehicles and reimburse the owners for repairs we have already done thank you *tr
