Problems with 2004 Dodge Durango POWER TRAIN

On average, the 2004 Dodge Durango starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 121 914 miles.

Components Affected by POWER TRAIN Issues

We have classified the 61 complaints from 2004 Dodge Durango about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION 26 DRIVELINE 1 AXLE ASSEMBLY 1 TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE) 1

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2004 Dodge Durango

The transfer case randomly shifts into 4 wheel lock and even 4-lo. this happens even when driving. i currently only drive on city streets as i am concerned that it will cause any accident or damage the vehicle if it shifts into 4-lo at higher speeds. the transfer case is currently stuck in 4 wheel lock, which makes it very hard to turn. i have read in forums that most people disconnect their transfer case motor, losing functionality but making the truck safer. i cannot disconnect the transfer care motor while it is stuck in 4 when lock. dodge should be held responsible and forced to fix all these vehicles.

About a week ago my alternator and battery had to be replaced, a day or two after i had them replaced i was pulling out onto a state road and i heard something got crunched, so i stopped and got out ans looked and nothing. got back in rhe car and put it in drive and i looked down at my dash and heart something trying to engage and on mh dash my svc 4wd light started flashing.. im not sure how ro fix it or what to do, it does it quite frequently. i opened the trunk and heard it trying to engage. stopped at a stop light, i can hear it trying to engage to 4 wd. i have been looking into thia and i see several consumers have had the same issues. it seems dodge should beable to come up with a permanent fix, but no recalls yet... my main concern is, what happens if im doing 80 mps on the freeway and it tries to engage into 4low?? thank you for your time!!

The 4wheel/awd vehicles will self engage transfer case causing equipment malfunction or serious bodily injury do to possibly vehicles crash do to equipment malfunction it needs to be addressed by chrysler but the refuse to my option there for would cause a massive recall in numerous years that would cause the company a large financial back set this issue needs to be addressed before it takes lives of it hasn't already search the web for this issue there's numerous sites with forums regarding this exact issue numerous vehicles

Truck switches to 4wd on its own and does not allow me to switch back to regular awd. the "service 4wd" light comes on. mechanics have indicated the transfer case shift motor may need to be replaced; but, none are available. also, there is no guarantee that would fix the dangerous problem of switching to 4wd.

Key fhob's have not been working for a while. replace battery still not working. now my shift motor on the transfer case is randomly shifting and locking in 4wd high. this happens while driving down the road. it happens while parked in the parking lot then when you go to drive hard to turn or get out of 4wd. when it locks in 4wd it is nearly impossible to back up. it doesn't seem to matter whether you're parked driving on city streets or on the highway. however, when it happen it can lead to inability to steer and control the vehicle. this is very dangerous and can also lead to substantial costly repairs from being in 4wd and not on the correct surface. reviewing many on-line forums i'm finding that there are several others that are experiencing the same issue. although there have been many attempt to correct the problem there seems to be an unwillingness to help or diagnose the issue. many repairs have been done and has not resolved the issue or temporarily fixs it and then right back to the same issue.

The vehicle randomly switches from awd to 4wd lock, does not seem to be any one thing that causes it. also have looked up hundreds of other reports on this from other people. everyone says that dodge dealers claim they have never heard this before. [xxx]. dodge is trying not to have to do a recall. that is obvious. shame on dodge. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The transfer case will make noise when unlocking the doors, it will also engage and change the awd by itself to 4lock when driving on the road. it can cause seriouse hard or accident. the airbags on both driver and passenger side light will engage and can cause seriouse harm. the fuel pump seems like it has an air bubble inside and shoots out gasoline and also can cause seriouse harm. all of these problems occurs when the vehicle is in motion and stationary. please fix!!! recall!!! you have to hear the noise and drive when it happens.

Car has a new engine and third water pump. it failed after 5000 miles and engulfed in flames causing the failure of the belt, tensioner, main drive pulley and ac compressor. today dodge just recalled these pumps for the very same reason bearing failure and super hot conditions causing fires and failure. i was just redriving along the truck has been running well and showed no signs of issues, no noise, smell, lights or struggle. car was at normal opperating tempurture and daytime traffic. stopped for gas stayed for a couple minutes then drive on, within two miles without any warning or noise the car started smoking pulled over and smelled a rubber notices no leaks in the water delivery system oil, trans, or power steering, the belt was red hot and smelled like a house fire car was taken 200 yards to pep boys and repaired at the cost of $1300. should not happen with 5000 miles on the water pump and 20,0000 on a new engine.

I have an awd vehicle. this vehicle has a knob that you can switch to go to 4 lock. my truck has been shifting into this mode all by itself. this is very dangerous as when it does the vehicle kind of locks up and becomes very difficult/impossible to move. i have 4 children and this is our main vehicle that we use. this is ridiculous. when researching this issue, there are a ton of complaints for the same thing. dodge needs to take responsibility and fix this issue before someone gets hurt. this has happened to me on more than one occasion. has happened at high speed, low speed, and stationary.

While driving, the 4wd engages on its own and will not get out of position. it is stuck in 4wd. "svc 4wd" light on the dash appears. tried doing a battery reset and the problem persists. *tr

Truck svc 4wd light on. truck goes into 4lo by itself while i'm driving. later when i went out in truck svc.4wd is off i get to stoplight & i feel a loud thud like i'm being hit from behind. now svc.4wd light stays on & car is hard to turn. *tr

Awd truck puts itself into 4 wd for no reason. causes vehicle to become hard to drive. this is rediculous. tons of complaints of the exact same issue on forums. does it while just idling in park and while driving down the road. very dangerous, especially with my 4 kids in the car!

The transfer case will shift into 4 wheel drive on it's on. this happens when the vehicle is off and i unlock or lock the doors with the key fob. it also happens when the vehicle is in motion. it is unpredictable and happens very frequently. this is not very safe and can also cause very expensive damage to the powertrain.

Dodge durango limited 4x4 engages 4 wheel drive randomly on the freeway at high speeds, without being told to. this is a huge safety issues and i see many people complain about it online.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated that the 4-wheel drive engaged independently without warning. as a result of the failure, the wheels locked and it was extremely hard to make any turns. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 115,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while driving various speeds while in two wheel drive, the transmission would suddenly switch to neutral, the vehicle would stop, and the four wheel drive sensor light would illuminate. after shutting off and restarting the vehicle, the transmission would make a grinding noise while in four wheel drive. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transfer case shift motor was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 150,000.

Durango decides to go into 4 wh drive at random without input from the driver to do so. steering becomes heavy ... often this occurs when the driver is making a turn at slow speeds. depending of the strength of the driver this can easily cause a crash. the motor rpms are pulled down as the driver makes the turn and can cause the car to stall...making the steering very heavy. this is a known problem with the durango... faulty transfer case motor. this should be replaced by chrysler.

My 2004 dodge durango 5.7l awd is engaging in four wheel drive at high speeds on its own on the interstate. it made a very loud grinding and clunking noise, the service 4wd light will come on and then turn off and then the 4wd lo light will come on and turn off. i was forced to pull off the road and it felt like the car was stuck in four wheel drive and will not come out. i tried to put it in gear while just sitting still and it just makes that grinding noise. i had to have the car towed as i am afraid that driving it would cause myself or others physical harm. please consider looking into this matter because as i am reading on several dodge forums this is a common problem and can be very serious to drivers and others. i have read that there are several problems with the transfer case in 2004 and 2005 dodge durango. a big company such as dodge should investigate the need for a possible recall since these problems are being addressed on dodge forums. as far as getting it fixed or trying to figure out how to get it fixed is the next problem.

Service 4wd lite came on, truck started jerking and binding on turns. cycled switch thru awd, 4lock and 4 lo, seemed to be ok for awhile then locked in 4lock and stayed there until driven a mile down a bumpy dirt road. repair shop serviced transfer case but now its stuck in 4lock, they suspect shift motor but none are available. internet complaints seem to point to electrical issue, temporary fix is to unplug shift motor if you can get it into awd but dodge needs to come up with a permanent fix for this.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while driving at approximately 70 mph, the four wheel drive engaged independently. the vehicle shook violently, veered to the right, and the service four wheel drive warning indicator illuminated intermittently. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that there was an open short in the electrical system that needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 150,000. the vin was unavailable.

As i was turning from the light and preceded to accelerate not even doing 5-10 mph, i heard a sound, which i thought was a blown tire. i turned off the truck to see if i had a flat tire. none of the tires where flat. so i called my husband, he looked at it, thinking it was the throttle body, due to the light that flashed on the dash. so he bought a new throttle, that as well as new spark plugs, and still nothing. it seems it wants to start, but isn't starting. so if this is the hydolock that is causing water to flow into the engine, you all need to pay for this. i have heard that you all know about this issue and has done nothing about it. lawsuit? i hope not. i just want my truck fixed, because i really like. please get in touch with me as soon as possible. *tr

I was entering interstate 25 north from denver colorado's 19th street when i heard a bang and my 04 durango began to shake violently. i believed it was a tire that popped even though i have new ones and so i continued down the ramp to a safe place where i pulled over and stopped. that's when i noticed the vehicle was still shaking and i then believed it to be a serpentine belt until i turned the vehicle off. i opened the hood and found the belt intact. i then looked under the vehicle and could see engine oil dripping off the back of the engine block & onto the ground from some unknown location of the motor. i attempted to pull the dipstick out of the engine but was unable to because it was stuck until i tried cranking the motor once again which allowed me to then pull the dipstick out, but i was never able to get it back in. i had the vehicle towed to my house and then eventually to a dealership after the motor was attempted to be started again. flame shot out from underneath the hood along with smoke and a lot of white smoke from the tailpipe. the engine is blown it would have to be replaced and i had 12 payments left for about $5000. i was in a negative equity situation with this vehicle now & i didn't have warranties or any ability to get help from chrysler or dodge. there have been almost a thousand other people to register complaints for the same problem. the engine hydrolocked because water leaks through the cowling between the windshield and the hood and drains all over the entire engine. it happens at approximately a hundred twenty thousand miles, allowing water to get inside the motor eventually. i took care of this vehicle better than any other vehicle i'd ever owned. *tr

Started car for first time after bad rainstorm over weekend. heard very loud clanging noise. hole in oil pan, oil leaked out everywhere. after taking apart the motor, service center discovered a rod shaft had sheared in half and shot through the engine block and oil pan. discovered it was caused by water getting into engine through spark plugs. because of this, the warranty company won't cover an engine replacement. we have taken in this vehicle to same service station before over the two years we have owned it because it would stall while driving in bad rainstorm. could never find a problem. read a lot of articles online attributing all of this to a design flaw in the hood of this vehicle. i know we are not the only owners of a 2004 dodge durango who have experienced this. something needs to be done to resolve the design flaw and compensate us for having to replace an engine that, apart from being in a poorly designed car, is otherwise in great condition. *tr

Noticed the svc 4wd light came on the dash board and then the vehicle's rear wheels locked when making a tight turn into a parking space. the vehicle stopped and was unable to move as if brake had been applied very hard. unplugged the battery for about a minute to allow the system to reset. the svc 4wd light doesn't come on. however, the vehicle still locks its rear wheels when making a tight turn into a parking space. *tr

2004 dodge durango, 5.7 hemi. the transfer case motor failing and the service 4wd light starting off blinking here and there. then went steady and locked in 4wd. *tr

The vehicle goes into random 4 wheel drive at various speeds. the problem is intermittent. this is clearly a safety issue while changing lanes or making turns. the 4 lock ,svc 4wd and 4 lo also will randomly flash. clearly, there are a lot of the same reported issues. its frustration to know of a potential safety issue and no one will address it. some type of user advisory should be issued. *tr

My 2004 dodge durango limited 4x4 5.7 hemi has experienced the same transfer case issues that many other owners have experienced. the vehicle will randomly try to shift itself into 4 wheel drive low without the driver changing the switch from the awd to the 4lo position. fortunately we were moving slowly when it occurred but this could be very dangerous at higher speeds as all four wheels lock up and the vehicle cannot be turned. after reading all of the complaints about this issue i decided not to attempt to have it repaired as many owners have stated that dealers have replaced very expensive parts such as the transfer case, transfer case shift motor, and transmission control computer without the problem being resolved. i elected to disconnect the transfer case wiring harness as i was 1000 miles away from home on vacation with my family at the time and needed to drive home safely. it has been disconnected ever since then and i am afraid to reconnect it as i am afraid that i will lose control of the vehicle if it occurs at a higher rate of speed. if i could be sure that the dealer could definitely correct the problem i would consider paying to have it fixed, but it is evident that dodge/chrysler is really not sure what the cause of the problem really is and is just guessing at the proper repairs. i believe that this should be considered for recall as it poses a serious safety concern. i am not sure if any serious accidents or deaths have resulted from this issue but it should be addressed before a fatality or serious injury occurs.

Vehicle suddenly shifts electronically into four wheel drive mode. this causes loss of driveability at slow speeds and the ability to easily turn corners on dry pavement. if this electronic shift control were to shift the transfer case to neutral, the vehicle would lose all power to the wheels and if it were parked could roll away. the transfer case shift knob includes the following user selectable modes: awd, fwd high, fwd low, neutral. *tr

When turning at low speed the wheels locked up and could not move. *tr

Was slowing down to make a right turn and the car shuddered and came to a halt. then would not move . looking under the car found that the drive shaft had fallen out of the rear axle area. had it towed to shop. *tr

Transfer case shifted into four wheel drive lock without input of the driver. the vehicle was on straight level hard surface road. transfer case will not shift out of four wheel drive lock. *tr

As with many other complaints with this same issue, i have experienced problems with the vehicles service 4wd light coming on. took to dealer and they said transfer case motor was bad. they replaced the motor and the light still comes on. vehicle gets 'locked' in 4wd mode and cannot select the standard awd driving option. there should be a recall on this. owners shouldn't have to keep replacing the transfer case in hopes it resolves the issue. dodge/chrysler needs to really look into this. *js

I was pulling away from a stop when the engine suddenly made some loud noises sounding like grinding and the vehicle lost all power, steering and brakes. i had to navigate over railroad tracks with a train coming and onto a side street and a ditch. i was the only one in the truck at the time and was not hurt and there was no damage to the vehicle. if it had been one of my kids or wife driving it would have been tragic due to no power and trying to steer a 5000lb truck across traffic and railroad tracks with a train coming. this vehicle was well maintained and had an oil change two weeks prior to the failure. within the past year this i had the vehicle completely gone thru by dealer mcinerney in mi and they got it ready for what i thought would be the next 100,000 miles. after i had the vehicle towed home due to the estimated $7000 repair bill, i called several chrysler mechanics who told me this is a known issue with that model and engine year due to both water leaking into the engine compartment (tsb issued) and a possible problem with the crank main bearing. i called chrysler customer service (joke) and both the people i talked too "literally" asked why i was calling since the warranty had expired and it was no longer chrysler's problem. i told them because warranty has no bearing on a known defect. the second person i talked to literally laughed at me on the phone and refused to let me talk to someone higher than him stating "i am as high as it gets" and told me "chrysler is not going to do anything for you". i asked his if this is the new chrysler after "i" helped bail them out, he said they bailed themselves out. this is the same customer service that told me there were no electrical issues, then 6 months later recalled my truck due to electric fires. if this does not get resolved by chrysler, i nor will a anyone in my family ever buy another chrysler product. *tr

The 4 wheel drive engages on its own while driving or just being parked. *tr

While driving my 2004 dodge durango 5.7 hemi the svc 4x4 light went on at the time i was driving 35mpg in 70 degree weather and did not have my 4x4 on. i took it the mechanic shop and they said i needed to replace the 4x4 shift motor, so i bought a new 4x4 shift motor and they replaced it but my 4x4 was still not working. i have taken it to two different mechanic shops and they keep saying its the 4x4 shift motor so i exchanged the new 4x4 shift motor thinking it was defected and once again bought a new one and had it replaced and at this point the mechanics don't know what else it could be because it still didn't work. *tr

I went out one morning to due my daily running for the day and when i turned the key and the vehicle started it made a sound like the starter was stuck. i turned it off and called my husband and when i started it again there was a loud pecking in the motor. i took it to a local garage and the man listened to it and told me that the noise was coming from inside the motor and that he did not do motor work. so i found another garage and took it to them and they told me that it was the starter that was bad and that they wouldn't be able to get to it for a week or so. so i called the lot that the vehicle was bought from and he sent me to his garage and the man there told me that he would take a look at it and get back to me. well he called the next day and told me that all of the noise was coming from the transmission and that it was the fly wheel so he replaced the fly wheel and the called me back and told me that the torque converter was what was making the noise. that the veins in it was bad and rattling around so i had to wait another three days for the part to come in. after he replaced that part and put it all back together and called me and told me that it was done and that it was still making that noise, and that he could not figure out where it was coming from. he started that he called the dodge garage and talked to the about it and they told him that the crank was bad. and that there was nothing that they could do about it. so i asked them about rebuilding the motor and he laughed at me and told me that if i could find someone that would attempt to rebuild it that he would shake their hand that no one will attempt it. all i could do is have another motor put in it. we have had that 2004 durango 5.7 for only a year and we still owe the bank for the vehicle. and an engine is going to cost us 3400.00 not to mention labor fee for putting it in. ...

Purchased vehicle on 2/19/13 drove it for 2 weeks. was driving on the highway and heard a loud noise followed by clunking noise which sounded like a flat tire but wasn't. took it to my mechanic who told me that the front differential needed to be replaced. fixed that problem. 2 weeks after that on 3/29 was getting off the highway when i heard another loud noise followed by a clunking noise this time i lost steering and barely made it into a parking lot. had it towed to my mechanic to find out it blew a rod and needed to have the engine replaced. after having this vehicle for 6 weeks i have had 2 catastrophic failures. my dealership will not help me and i cannot afford to replace the engine on my own. i purchased this vehicle to be a safe and reliable mode of transportation for me and my 4 children. now i am out $6000 and have no vehicle. something needs to be done about this. people should not be forced to pay for an issue that is known to be a problem. *tr

Had driven truck earlier in day had no issues at all. drove and sounded like it always did!! went to start it that evening to get daughter from school event and it made a horrible noise and wouldn't start! mechanic said it was starter. after 2 days of waiting for a starter that noone keeps in stock! put it on and nothing! mechanic said it was stuck flywheel. he got it to turn over but the motor was knocking very loud!! now i'm without a car because i do not have the money for a new motor!! *tr

My well-maintained 2004 dodge durango slt began doing something bizarre a few months ago at about 120,000 miles. this has 4.7l v8 and the awd-4hi-4lo 2-speed transfer case. the "service 4wd" and the traction control light began flashing, and it felt like the transfer case was stuck in 4hi with the tires grabbing on a turn. the selector knob on the dash would not function. i brought the truck to my mechanic who checked the function of the transfer case motor, inspected the motor and wiring, and changed the transfer case fluid again. i called my local chrysler dealer and they advised that they would need to change the transfer case motor. the motor costs $1190 plus two hours labor and two quarts of atf+4 fluid. i brought the truck back to my mechanic and he said there is nothing wrong with the motor or the transfer case or the dash selector knob. he said he believes this is a control module or programming issue. i got a third opinion at my local lee myles. they concurred that there is nothing wrong with the transfer case motor and there must be some issue with the computer, programming, or one or more of the control modules. the truck continues to do the same thing. the malfunction condition exists approximately 65% of the time. i can't afford to bring to the dealer now and spend over $1300 for a repair that i do not think will correct the problem. i have read on many message boards that this seems to be a very common issue with 2004-2006 durangos and changing the motor, or the switch does not help the situation. i also notice that at times when i open the doors or unlock the doors with the key fob, i can hear the transfer case motor cycling. this seems to be an electrical or programming issue. it is very difficult to turn the wheels at low speeds when the malfunction condition exists and i fear this is straining the transmission. *tr

Vehicle started to run a little rough. wife was at a stop light accelerated upon green and heard a loud noise and a jerk. she nursed it home about a mile or so. pulled into the driveway and shut it off and oil was everywhere. i looked around and discovered a hole in the engine block behind the passenger side tire about the size of my fist. have had the durango since it was brand new. its always ran great. we love our durango. very upset that this happened. we do not have much money to spare at months end, but we needed a car so we were forced to go buy another. would like to maybe get the durango fixed. but that might take a little while to get the money now. be nice if chrysler could send me a new engine or something. i have owned a total of 5 chrysler brand vehicles. *tr

Similar to all other complaints i read. was driving the vehicle during rain, engine started ticking. stopped and had it towed to mechanic. bent rod and busted piston. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle would stall sporadically. additionally, the transmission would slip and the vehicle would engage into any gear independently. the contact also stated that the engine rpms would increase excessively and the vehicle would exhibit an abnormal noise when first started. on one occasion, the contact secured the vehicle in park and exited when she noticed the vehicle had rolled away. the contact was able to re-enter the vehicle however, it proceeded to crash into a tree. there were no injuries and a police report was filed. the vehicle had been taken to an authorized dealer multiple times where the fuel pump and the alternator was replaced but the failure persisted. the vehicle was not further repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 76000.

2004 dodge durango limited 5.7l hemi 4x4 my vehicle was already running for approx 3-5 minutes, warming up, after i had finished working a full 12-hour night shift. time is 0640 hrs, outside temp is approx 30 degrees. vehicle running normal, no alarms, no warning indicators. i was pulling out of driveway of my employment onto the roadway and accelerating on a completely straight roadway. as vehicle was passing 20-25mph and with no fore-warning, heard loud 'bang' from the engine compartment and vehicle started shaking. vehicle's reaction was immediate. violent vibrations, tappings and metal to metal sounds, i immediately shut down the engine and drifted off to side of road. my vehicle has never been pushed or worked hard. never hauled heavy loads or trailored. body is in very good condition and vehicle maintenance has always been performed on regular basis (approx 1000 miles into current oil change). at first i thought i had thrown the serpentine belt, but within seconds i knew it was much worse, shutting off the engine. two checks of the oil level, assured me that there was in fact oil in the engine. there were no external leaks found and there did not appear to be any oil/coolant mixing. after towing the vehicle, to my mechanic, they have since reported what they believe to be as a "catastrophic loss of the engine". i have reported this failure to chrysler corp. and they have opened a case number for me, but they have not made any commitment, if they will cover the failure. after some of my own investigating, i have discovered there are numerous complaints, of the exact same nature as my failure, with this identical make/model year and 5.7l hemi engine, with many failures occurring in the 80-120k mile range (my mileage 97k). very angry and upset about this failure, but thankful i was able to safely pull over without any further incident and injury. *tr

Goes in and out of 4 wheel drive by itself. *tr

Auto drove properly previous day, started the engine at 6pm and it sounded like rocks in the engine. a puddle of oil was visible underneath the parked suv. car has been properly cared for, no warning lights on the dashboard ie: oil, engine light - just loud clanking and not drivable. edmunds and other auto information complaints are exactly like ours. this issue has been fixed in the 05 models but not in the 04. it rained a little earlier in the day and this video shows what is transpiring in the 04 models: hydrolock= broken rods http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_thrvtmlx4 chrysler needs to answer the hundreds of complaints that are documented. we cannot afford a new family car. thank you for your time and i hope that you help us find a solution and hold them accountable. *tr

My truck goes in and out of 4wd on its own. truck can be on, off, driving, parked, it doesn't matter. apparently a lot of others are having this issue as well. *tr

I've owned my 2004 dodge durango 5.7 hemi since 2005. with only 151,960 miles - taking excellent care and pride in it, the #7 rod has been bent. water has somehow gotten into my motor causing all kinds of issues. within the past year, it has had issues running hot, running poorly when it rains and rough idle on occasion. after sitting for 24 hours, i went out to crank it and it jumped (i thought a small animal had crawled into my motor) and it shut off. i then re-cranked it and it sounds like a sewing machine. i had to have it towed and am now looking at $4000 for another motor. i've have researched the internet and am totally blown away at the others having the issues with the same exact make and model of vehicle. this is something chrysler should make right. i am a single mother and live week to week, i can not afford to do this, but i have to. working full time, caring for a 10 year old and now applying for a part-time job is what this extra expense is causing me to do. i think someone should do something - if i win the lottery, you best believe i will. chrysler do the right thing....this is happening too much and is a defect - no doubt. toyota did a recall - maybe if i'm ever to buy another vehicle, atleast they would make it right. *kicks soapbox*. *tr

1. engine light remains lit: service can see no reason from computer diagnosis. 1a. engine idles rough for several minutes after a rain storm. 2. engine won't start unless gas pedal fully depressed: then stalls unless idle remains at least 1500 rpms. 3. took to service shop: diagnosis is cylinder # 7 has no compression and computer shows 8 system faults relating to failure of cylinder # 7. research from internet forums shows this is a common problem and the only solution is to replace the engine at a cost between $4000 and $5000. no guarantees replacement engine will not have same problem. *tr

I own a 2004 dodge durango and let me tell you the problems i have had with it!! the radiator, throttle position sensor and brakes. the biggest problem is when it rains. the truck just shuts off, no matter where you are when this happens. you could be on the highway going 65mph and it just shuts down. i thank god that i haven't gotten in to an accident yet. it is so dangerous to drive it like that not knowing if when you re out and its starts to rain i head for home because i am so worried. i don't even let me teenage daughter borrow it in cause she is out and god forbid it starts to rain. when it shuts down there are no brakes no nothing. someone has to do something about this. there are so many complaints and no recalls on this part. that is insane!!!! someone somewhere is going to get killed!!! dodge - you have to do something!!!!! i will never buy another dodge again!!! *tr

I have a 2004 dodge durango hemi 5.7 with 62k miles. i maintained the car well. i have two major problems: 1) while driving on the highway the checking engine light and the lighting rod light comes on and the car jumps out of overdrive and remains in 3rd or 4th gear. my temporary fix would be to pull over, turn off the car wait 3 seconds then restart. the check engine light stays on but the lighting bolt goes off and the car is able to shift back into high gear. 2) recently the while driving the oil light comes and the car stalls leading me to stare the car off the road without any power. this is extremely dangerous!! i have no fix to date. *tr
