We have classified the 61 complaints from 2004 Dodge Durango about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I bought my durango at a used dealers. it had 56000 miles one owner, 2010, center column panel over heated and you could smell plastic burning. the radio shut off the air condition controls well actually everything was so hot you had to turn off truck to let that center panel cool down before you could turn them off,the next thing i started hearing a bad shifting noise and it banged really loud like from the rear end i assumed. no matter if you were driving slow or fast the truck would downshift and sounding like a rod or something was going to come through the floor. i have all of the maintenance down when was told but this didn't help at the time the downshifting started it was 90,000 miles ,now i am at 93,000 -or 98,000 miles and something is really knocking to me i thought it might have been a fan hitting the radiator but not the case, it also stalls out in the rain and engine wont start until after rain has stopped, it stalls out on sunny days for no reason. you still here a thud noise or it downshifting hard at 15 miles an hour or if you go any speed it continues to down shift shaking the vehicle. the windshield washer button broken off from under the hood the rubber around the hood keeps falling off inside panel lights are shorting out. whats wrong with this truck good care fantastic vehicle love it but it has issues bad issues. not drivable 930000# *kb
Have had ongoing problem with the engine cutting out for last 18 months. replaced plugs and wires. problem still persists. usually occurs while not giving gas. occurred once will turning into a parking lot. power steering went out and vehicle maneuvered into oncoming lane right of way. no collision occurred. *tr
My 2004 dodge durango stalls frequently...almost daily. i took the vehicle to the dealer after the first incident and the technicians were stumped and seemed unaware of the issue, which i have since learned is not uncommon. the stalls frequently occur at parking lot speeds, but have occurred while doing 50 km/hr and while under power. the higher speed stalls are a concern as the stall also kills power braking and steering. to restart the vehicle, you have to put it in n and turn ignition. so far, that has worked each time, but at speed this can be a little unnerving to say the least. dodge stated that a eec flash was available, but that it did not address stalling, only shifting issues and therefore it was not required. dodge has so far indicated there is nothing that can be done. i am dating the information below with the most recent incident because it was the first time it has occurred at higher speed, but it has been stalling without warning at least once a day for the last 2 weeks. *tr
I have a 2004 dodge durango slt in which the engine stalls and the vehicle cuts off. this normally occurs when braking, deceleration, traffic lights, low speeds. also the passenger seat airbag is not working according to the visual lighted display in that area. i recently purchased this vehicle this year. *tr
The problems with the vehicle started with a battery issue, my wife went to get in the suv and all of the lights came on as normal, when she put the key into the ignition to start it everything shut off and the dash panel lights started flickering. we had the vehicle towed to dodge dealership and they told us that the battery was dead and we had it replaced. two days after picking the vehicle up my wife went to make a legal u-turn and the vehicle shut off, in the process of the u-turn she pulled into the gas station and re-started the vehicle since then it has happened three other times, most recently she made a right at a stop sign onto a busy intersection, and almost got rear ended at 60mph because her vehicle cut off in the middle of a turn. luckily the driver behind her was able to swerve into the next lane to avoid hitting her. *tr
2004 dodge durango limited hemi engine. for no reason driving down road the suv will stop running at any speed, you lose all power steering and brakes, and are just coasting. happened 4 times in 3 months, "no one at dodge knows why" even though every site on the internet, shows this to be a problem on all the 2004's with no answers from dodge. then after 4th time went to restart engine and engine blew, a connecting rod snapped in half, which is obviously a forgery/metaligy issue. everyone one who has looked at this says so and is a common problem in all the 2004's. this was a $49,000 suv, and this is terrible, dodge just says $9,000. no comment. i'm sure people have died from the first issue, loss of power, without steering or brakes, but does the engine freezing like that, instantly, cause the weak connecting rod to snap. if someone there is doing there job, this should be recalled asap. i'm sure people are dieing over this and dodge does not care, will not fix,and will not even comment on. i have been trying since july. please help is there any way to see the other complaints that have been filed about this. i have talked to 14 other people with the same hemi engine, same year with the same exact problem, but had to find them myself searching the internet. it's an obvious problem, that's been proven, repeatedly, what can we do to change fix/this. thank you, tom *tr
Dodge durango 2004 lost all function pulling into parking lot. lost engine, brakes, steering, electrical. liken it to a power plug being pulled out and instantaneous loss of all control. was able to restart without mishap. took it to nearest dodge dealership only to no avail. they couldn't find anything wrong. took the car home only to have it happen the very next morning again during deceleration to a street light. took it to a different dodge dealership. found nothing wrong.but changed the battery in the event low voltage was the issue. power cut out again during a deceleration and turning a slight right at a fork in the road. this time with entire family onboard. loss of steering, and brakes. but instrument panel stayed lit. and all heat radio. will not try driving again until solved. note: nothing was done to the car before incidents started to occur. no oil change, car wash, pothole, break-in. nothing. lost all faith in "certified" dodge mechanics as they can't even look up the issue and confirm similar occurrence. i've found several via limited internet search. no solutions however. *tr
Have no clue as to why or what actually causes this failure, but the gear shift will all of a sudden and unexpectedly lock up when taking the running vehicle out of park . this has occurred a various times through out the past year, not showing any real reason or consistency with weather, or other elements playing as a factor for this to occur. one would go to pull the gear shift down and it just was as if it was jammed or locked, during these past times of occurring tried turning the car off and back on, or just releasing the brake and pressing back it (sometimes several times) and it would all of sudden move and allow it to go into gear, until the other day this happened and upon entering the running vehicle and going to place it into gear the gear shifting cable broke. the vehicle is being taken to the garage to have the cable replaced. *tr
During medium/heavy rain the engine stalls badly or completely dies. also happens during car washes, though not a safety issue then- just aggravating! :( restarts only after rain subsides. this creates a very dangerous driving condition- for myself and those vehicles around me. my research shows this is a very common problem for this vehicle. despite countless complaints, it appears dodge has refused to acknowledge or address it for several years, alienating many previously loyal customers (this was a very popular suv). the factory waranty was expired/near to expire when most of us began to experience this so we had little recourse. as my vehicle was purchased new and has low miles for its age, i plan to keep it for the foreseeable future- circumstances permitting... thank you for letting me post my concern here! i hope something can be done to correct this very serious issue. long overdue! step up chrysler and stand behind your product. thank you again for giving attention to my concern. :) *tr
Engine stalls during slow speeds. when you accelerate it does not respond and than it lunges forward. engine light comes on and off. *tr
Nighttime. pouring rain. turned a corner in a parking lot and the power steering just quit. turned car off and restarted. power steering was back. first and only time it happened so far. *tr
Dodge 2004 durango stalled while taking a right turn onto side street. unable to finish turn or got off the road. i was panicked, found flashers to turn on, then instructed to by helpful passerby to turn key off, and restart car. this worked, hasn't happened again. i take this very serious, my young, new drivers, children are able to drive this vehicle and wouldn't know what to do if this happened to them. i want this taken care of at dodges expense. mary west. *tr
2004 dodge durango 5.7 hemi engine limited 4x4 engine stalls when i slow down to stop or make a turn, loss or power steering and brakes. it is only a matter of time before someone gets into a serious accident. this problem is well documented on the internet. recall needed. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. once the vehicle is started, the contact is unable to depress the brake pedal. the vehicle jumps into gear and moves forward without warning. there are no recalls for this failure. the dealer stated that the repairs would be the contact's responsibility. the failure mileage was 52,000.
While sitting at a red light the vehicle stalled. i put it in park and it started right up. there was no sign of running rough before the stall, it just was idling and cut out. a week later on the highway at approx. 60 mph the vehicle bucked like it wanted to stall but didn't. it did this three times in less than a minute. i accelerated and it seemed to help. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken for an emissions test but did not pass. the vehicle was then taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician advised the contact that the pcm would have to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired and was taken back for emission testing twice but did not pass either time. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the pcm was replaced two additional times. the vehicle was not further repaired and the failure persisted. the approximate failure mileage was 38,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle would shift gears automatically. when the vehicle was in reverse, it would shift into drive and the shifter light on the instrument panel would flicker. most recently, when the vehicle was placed into park, it began to move forward. as a result, the vehicle struck a pole. the contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer. the speed was unknown. the current mileage was approximately 75,000 and failure mileage was approximately 74,500.
I kept hearing a ticking and there were issues as for transmission. i took it back the 1st day i bought it and spoke to the guy who sold it to me. then the guy left to go to another company. so then got someone else and 3more times was told there was nothing wrong. *tr
Engine stalls infrequently at low speeds <15mph at the same time before this happened rpm jumps up-if a recall is closed will it reopen if this is an already known problem. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while driving 10 mph, the gear shift sticks while approaching a stop. the failure makes it difficult to stop the vehicle. the failure has occurred four times within a six month period. the first time the vehicle was taken to the dealer, they stated that the braking system failed. a new master cylinder was installed, which temporarily repaired the failure; however, the failure recurred six weeks later. she took the vehicle back to the dealer, but they could not duplicate the failure. the contact currently has an appointment with the dealer to further inspect the vehicle. the vin and recall number were unknown. the failure mileage was 5,000 and current mileage was 32,000.

Vehicle stalls at low speeds and when turning. immediately restarts. had local dealer look at it, but they can't fix the problem. factory customer service is no help. have read many other complaints about same condition online. *tr
2004 dodge durango with the 5.7l stalling going around corner, almost causing accident. this is a safety hazard, as it could cause an accident possibly injuring myself, family, or others. *tr
2004 dodge durango with 5.7 liter hemi engine. have been experiencing engine stalling while driving on 4 occasions. there have been two occasions while accelerating from a stop and turning and two while driving at highway speeds. after the first 2 occurrences the truck was taken to the dealership where they were unable to reproduce the event and as a precaution replaced the egr valve. after getting the truck back from the dealership the engine stalled 2 more times at highway speed. truck is back in the dealership and once again the dealership can not duplicate the problem. *tr
2004 durango limited stalled while braking twice. stalled once at a stop light. has the 5.7l hemi engine with 50k miles. took it to dealer to have it looked at. was told they could not get it to stall and we would have to keep an eye out for it. then i found the tsb on line detailing the issue. thus i find it odd that the dealer didn't know about the issue: tsb # 18-013-05 nhtsa action number ea05018. *tr
Our 2004 dodge durango was in our driveway in park, the engine turned off, radio on, both front doors open and keys still in the ignition. the truck had been sitting there for 5 minutes or more till i got my neighbor to help me unload a grill out of the back. my wife hopped into the passenger side to turn the radio down when the truck began to roll forward while in "park". my wife was knocked out of the truck and was hurt badly on her leg and it ran into my neighbor's car then rolled into the street. i ran after the truck to stop it from going any further, i stepped on the brake then looked at the shift handle and it was still in "park". *tr
Driving about 20 miles an hour vehicle came to a complete stop the tires locked up could not move vehicle had to have towed to dealer problem was a complete axle failure mileage 20,000. *tr
We recently purchased a used 2004 dodge durango limited. equipped with the 5.7l hemi. we have owned the suv for just under 90 days and on three separate occasions the engine has stalled when my wife was backing out of our driveway and shifting into drive. i spoke with a dodge dealership on the phone a few days ago and they offered little help. i intend to call them in the morning and set up an appointment to have them look at it. this is the vehicle my wife uses to transport our two young boys to pre-school and herself to work. this is very concerning to us because the truck dying in the driveway is one thing, but what if the next time they are on the highway or in the middle of an intersection. *jb
While driving (20 mph) the front drive shaft assembly fell off. apparently, the four bolts that once anchored this shaft just fell out. the vehicle has only 36,000 miles. i stopped the vehicle and had no park gear so i applied the parking break. the vehicle is as the dealership pending repair. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle stalled while in gear. this had occurred twelve times and most frequently happened while in reverse. this had also happened while traveling 45 mph. the vehicle was taken to the service dealer four times but the service dealer was unable to resolve the issue.*ak
2004 dodge durango with hemi (5.7 l) has stalled on five occasions. all instances have occurred at low speeds before coming to a stop at an intersection or exiting a parking lot. the pcm module was flashed updated per tsb 18-013-05a and the problem has occur 3 additional times. *jb
Vehicle stalls, transmission quits. doesn't work. *jb
I bought a 2004 dodge durango in november 2004. vin [xxx]. [xxx]. i have had numerous problems with the vehicle, including the vehicle silently ceasing to operate. this has happened 3 times in motion, very nearly causing very serious motor vehicle crashes. 1 occurrence happened while stationary and in park. all of this has happened in the 1st year of ownership. additionally, the vehicle failed to come out of park numerous times; when placed into drive, failed to engage and would simply idle; and had numerous electrical quirks that are not safety related. each time we have taken the vehicle into the dealer, simply to be told "unable to duplicate." just recently, we were told chrysler was aware of the vehicle ceasing to operate without warning while driving. we were told chrysler refused to acknowledge the issue or fix it, and have been pressuring dealerships to send the vehicles back out with the customer in the same unsafe and deadly condition. chrylser refuses to acknowledge us or the problem, and 3 times now my family has been placed in peril because chrysler won't recall these defective vehicles or spend money to fix them.*jb updated 07/18/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
Parked in the driveway which is on a slight upward incline with car running, unloading groceries while kids were watching a video. after 15 minutes i reached in through the passenger side to turn off the ignition and the car released out of park, rolling down the driveway, hit a tree and mailbox. vehicle was 'clicking' the entire way down the driveway. *jb
Our durango had experienced numerous problems, since we purchased it new in 5/04. the engine surged, it stalled, and it felt like the brakes did not grab in the rear. it also racked up more miles on the odometer, than it actually drove. on 12/16/04 we brought it in to the dealership for a recalled battery cable. the next day the engine caught on fire while driving. it was towed to the dealership, the transmission was replaced, and we picked it back up 12-28-04. on 1-16-05 we had a second fire in the engine while driving. this time it was in the shop until 2-1-05. the dealership overhauled the transmission, but did not replace it. on 2-2-05 again while driving, our durango's engine caught on fire, this time the fire was so big, and so fast my husband barley had time to get our kid out before it exploded, and burned to the ground. it took the fire department over an hour to get the fire out. i had sent a certified letter to daimler chrysler, asking them to buy the durango back under the lemon law on 1-20-05. to this day there has been no response to that letter. my husband and children were almost killed! *jb
When accelerating from a stop vehicle stalled. dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak
Driving 2004 dodge durango accelerator got stuck to floor. preening the brake, vehicle caught on fire. *bf the incident was due a manufacturer's defect per fire inspection. other problems were; the electric remote was inoperative, there was a delay in the shift when the a/c was on and there was a lot of water coming from the a/c. *sc
The vehicle slipped out of park without warning. the consumer was able to gain control of the vehicle. *jb an occupant of the vehicle was complaining about the seat belt not being latched properly. the consumer opened the door and reached in to buckle the child safety latch and 8 seconds later the vehicle started to roll backwards, trapping the consumer between the door and the garage bay divider. *sc *jb
We purchased our durango new in 8/04. on 9/ 9/04 the truck started, but died while i was backing out of my garage. we had to have it towed to the dealership. they stated it needed an update performed on the computer system. it happened again on 9/24/04 and then in oct. it had to be towed and they claimed that they apparently did not get the update completed or done properly. we began noticing then that the truck felt as if it was surging or almost skipping a gear. multiple people from the dealership test drove it on multiple occasions. we were told that we were just feeling more w/ this vehicle because it was such a smooth ride compared to most 4wd vehicles. does that make sense? we finally gave up. now on 3/ 25/06 the truck died while in park in a parking lot. that same night it surged as i pulled out into traffic. w/in a few hundred yards i stopped at a light and when i attempted to accelerate it was as if the truck was going to die. on the morning of 3/28 the truck surged and when i attempted to turn the truck it died in the middle of the road. the next day it died on the way to the dealership. they kept the truck for about a week, stated they hooked it up to the computer and it showed nothing was wrong, drove it for about 30 miles during that time w/out incident. now it has died again while i was pulling into my garage. i am tired of being told there is nothing wrong. a vehicle should not just die while you are going down a road w/out any warning. at no time have we had any lights come on the dash advising of a problem. it is very disturbing to think that chrysler is okay w/ us driving our families around in these vehicles. i have three small children that i tote around in this vehicle and it is not very comforting to know that it will die unexpectedly. *jb
2004 dodge durango 4x4, automatic transmission, at slow speeds 10 mph acceleration has a lag until 2,000 rpm at which point the transmission engages and the vehicle lurches forward rapidly.
Not reporting a failure or incident, just a poorly manufactured vehicle with an inherent problem that the dealer/company was aware of but did not disclose at time of purchase, nor do they have a fix for it. just a shrug of the shoulders.
Dt: shortly after purchasing a new vehicle and when descending downhill the automatic transmission slipped. it felt as if it slipped into neutral. this occurred with or without the cruise control switch on. the consumer took the vehicle to a dealer, who test drove the vehicle and determined this was normal. the consumer felt this was a safety issue, and the transmission did not maintain a steady pace. no repairs or corrections have been made. the consumer has not contacted the manufacturer. *ak *nm
Instant stalling, whether turning or going straight. warm or cold doesn't matter. dealer has no clue.
The vehicle's radio stopped working. *nm when the consumer tried to change lanes, he noticed a delayed reaction from the time he pressed the accelerator to the response of the vehicle. on another occasion, the check engine light illuminated and the transmission down shifted for a few seconds. the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and explained all the problems he had experienced and after a diagnostics test was done, the dealer stated the computer displayed a code and they did not know what it was so they erased it. one month later, the consumer experienced the same problem with the radio and when he attempted to place the vehicle in park, the gear shifter did not go into the park position it stayed in the reverse position. the vehicle went back to the dealer and it was discovered that 2 bolts and a bracket were missing from the transmission shifter. the consumer stated the cruise control did not and a new problem had surfaced. there was a warning light on the dashboard that read pass air bag off. *jb
When driving at an undetermined speed, the transmission light appeared on the dashboard. the consumer took the vehicle to the dealership for inspection, however, the mechanic could not duplicate the problem. *ak after the fifth visit to the service dealer (desoto mall), the transmission light had not come back on. the shifting light had come on and the consumer had taken the vehicle to the service dealer (central maine dodge) and after three visits to them, they found melted wires and a bad sensor. the wires had holes in them. chrysler would do nothing to help resolve this problem. a transmission sensor was placed in the vehicle. (the shift indicator stayed on intermittently along with all of the other lights & the transmission range sensor rationality wires were damaged and melted on the catalytic converter) also the engine had come on and the vehicle jumped forward. *sc *jb
This vehicle has no engine braking. selecting "tow/haul" which takes it out of overdrive does not provide engine braking. selecting "2" and "tow/haul" does not slow the vehicle on a downgrade. it is dangerous. i have asked the dealer about it and no response. i have contacted chrysler and no response. it is the magnum v-8 with the trailer hauling package. i am afraid to haul a trailer as you would be on the brakes continuously. nothing has changed in the year i have owned it.*jb
