Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. the contact stated that he could not shift the vehicle out of the park position. after researching the internet, he determined how to shift the vehicle out of park by depressing an unknown safety button on the gear shifter. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the failure recurred each instance the vehicle was operated and the safety button would have to be utilized for the shifter to move. the failure and current mileages were 40,000. updated 10/27/10. *lj
I have a 2008 dodge avenger and the vehicle will not shift into gear from park. there are no warning indicators on the dash indicating a problem and it was operating fine when i drove it to work. it will shift into reverse if forced but will not go into neutral at all. this is apparently a widespread problem according to the website autobeef. *tr
I am having the same issue where my car is stuck in park. i found this site after researching the issue which appears to be quite common. i will have a friend who is a mechanic look at it to see if we can fix this. however, i am concerned that this defect could be a safety issue. seems that it could be quite possible that if it could be stuck in park, it could also get stuck in drive or reverse. please investigate this issue and make dodge do a recall. *tr
I have a 2008 dodge avenger that i was unable to use as of today. i got ready to leave my house and my car would not go out of park to reverse. i started trying to figure out why. i went to google and found numerous people had the same problem. and what's worse, is that dodge doesn't see it as a problem and has not placed a recall out for it. it needs to be done. its a safety thing. my warranty on my car is up. i have an extended warranty but its still going to cost me $200 at least to fix it and i do not have that. i have 2 kids, one who is a diabetic, and i am a stay at home mom. what is it going to take for dodge to get with it and take care of this and make sure a recall is sent out on this?? too many people have had this same problem. *tr
I have a 2008 dodge avenger that has a defective gear shift. my car was in the middle of the road and i was almost injured trying to get out of the car when i discovered the car would not come out of park after i turned back on. this may not be considered a safety problem to dodge but depending on where your car is when you turn it off it does really become a safety issue. this was the first incident i have had with this problem and i am attempting to get this repaired now. this really has been a pain for me and my bank account!! *tr
Car would not shift out of park. *tr
Went to go leave work at 9:30 at night and the car will not go into drive. the gear shifter seems to be stuck in park. had to get it towed to the dodge dealer nearby. i have seen numerous complaints on this issue while researching it online. *tr
03jun10 while attempting to leave for work, i could not get my vehicle out of park. i called a dodge dealership and the service department claimed they knew nothing about this. i called a few different mechanics and they both stated it could be a brake safety switch and to try a manual over ride switch near the gear shifter. tried the over ride with negative results. car is still stuck in park. did an internet search and this seems to be a very common occurrence, one that it seems dodge is doing nothing to correct. there needs to be a recall issued for this defective part. *tr
I got into my 2008 dodge avenger this morning, which was purchased in february 2009 and the gear shift would not move out of park. this is a known issue with this make and model as reported on www.carcomplaints.com. please force chrysler to recall and fix this issue. *tr
The 2008 dodge avenger is stuck in park. *tr
Went to start car. started up no problem. tried to put car in reverse could not shift out of park. had to search online to find out how to push a small lever under the center console panels to be able to shift the car, and its not the emergency release in the owners manual. first time i have ever had a problem but there are countless reports online for the same problem. *tr
Gear shift on my 2008 dodge avenger stuck in park. *tr
2008 dodge avenger sxt shift module locks up stuck in park. many people have this problem. average repair by dodge, parts + labor = about $360. annoying and dangerous. *tr
Our 2008 dodge avenger suddenly would not shift out of park. it has 52,000 miles on it. defect was found to the brake interlock cable. dodge advised that it was not covered under any recall. internet search reveals that many avengers are having this problem. i believe it is a manufacturing problem related to the interlock system, and is a safety related defect. *tr
I have a 2008 dodge avenger that i could not get out of park. a mechanic friend removed the gear shift cover and notices a pink piece of plastic that appeared to be broken from somewhere inside the gearshift. after further investigation this pink piece of plastic is what is needed to move the car out of park. this is a dangerous situation and should be considered a recall item. *tr
Could not get car out of park- found a broken pink plastic piece that needed to be moved in order for car to come out of park. *tr
When leaving work i started my car but was unable to move the car out of park. it was completely unexpected and stranded me in 100 degree weather. i located a website where i found this to be a common occurrence with the 2008 dodge avenger. i have yet to take my car in to the dealership to have it looked at but several comments on the website i found said that this repair will cost around $350. seems to me with so many people having this issue it should be a recall and not something that we should have to dish out that kind of money to repair. *tr
I have a 2008 dodge avenger it got stuck in park and i could not get it out. i called a mechanic friend who showed me a little pink switch that should release it to what ever gear you need. it does not work unless you push it yourself. i notice online that they have a lot of people who own 2008 avengers with the same problem. something needs to be done. i will be bringing mine to the dealership. *tr
I have a 2008 dodge avenger and on saturday 5/15/10 my car got stuck in park and would not shift. we were able to shift it manually to get it home but after researching the problem i found it is a common problem with this make and model of car, yet there is still no recall. it is not covered under my warranty and dodge wants $50 to just look at it and tell me what it is although i already know what's wrong with it and many other 2008 dodge avengers. *tr
When my husband went to leave work our avenger (automatic transmission) would not shift out of park. fortunately a co-worker is handy with cars and took apart the gear shift panel and showed my husband that there was a pink piece broken and that he would have to move this piece by hand to shift gears. we were told at oriely's auto parts that this piece is called a shift lock and is not carried at those types of stores. as this happened yesterday (saturday) we won't be able to contact the dodge dealership until monday to find out how much it will cost to repair. after doing online research i have found this to be a common problem on the 2008 dodge avenger. *tr
I am unable to shift my 2008 dodge avenger sxt car out of park... i have done research and found out there are a lot of others with this problem. *tr
I own a 2008 dodger avenger. for no known reason, the shifting gear wont shift and is stuck in park. if it does go into gear, for no known reason it pops back into park, causing a major risk to others that are on the road not to mention to me and my family! *tr
No warning what so ever. i drove the 2008 avenger earlier in the day and later went to get in and would not shift out of park. i checked the internet for similar incidents and yes it has happened a lot. *tr

Gear shift stuck in park position. *tr
Ref : dodge avenger 2008 - gear shift module lock up - please look into above issue since this is happening with most of the avengers. the gear shift locks and cannot be released. the whole gear shift console needs to be replaced. the dealer does not want to take responsibility and it's very expensive to replace. after further research most of the dodge and chryslers vehicles have been having these problems for years. *tr
I have had my 2008 dodge avenger for almost 2 years. car has no problems when i drove it earlier in the day. the car cranked with no problems, but when i tried to put it in gear would not move. called a mechanic who towed the car and informed me it was a broken shifting column. item not broken from wear and tear. *tr
Automatic transmission stuck in park on 2008 dodge avenger. *tr
I have a 2008 dodge avenger with 40,800 miles on it. i had a problem with the gear shifter stuck in park . the problem seems to be very common in many dodge vehicles , it seems to be a very cheap plastic part . could there be a recall on this problem???? *tr
The gear shifter got stuck in park. it had worked fine previously without any hitches. we have owned the car since dec. 2009 and never had any problems with the gear shift sticking. then one night it was just stuck. we had to call a tow truck and the guy had to manually put the car in drive so we could get it to the dealer. *tr
2008 dodge avenger. will not shift out of park into any gear past reverse. can get it to go into reverse if hold the shifter manually, but feels spring loaded back into park.
My daughter was leaving her job at 1130pm when her car would not shift out of park. we attempted the suggestions in the manual which made it seem like this was a safety feature. the next day i called the service dept. and the technician told me to remove the shift console and pull the pink switch and it release park and i would be able to drive it. i drove directly to the dealer. they knew the exact problem (must have had before). the shifter and the shifter assembly were replaced in two days. was very satisfied with the service dept. many more complaints were noted on the internet, but stated no recall. *tr
Bought the car used. 41,000 miles. car stalls when coming to a stop at stop lights and stop signs when it is raining. talked with dealer and stated nothing noted about the problem. *tr
Engine stalling without warning no gas pedal car runs at idle only. *tr
I own a 2008 dodge avenger and it has the issue of getting stuck in the park gear. it's never happened until now and it constantly keeps happening now. i've read on forums where many more dodge avenger owners are having the some problem. if i can't move my car from park then i can't drive it anywhere. i've called dodge in which they mention that there are no recalls, but i believe it a defect. *tr
I took my son to the er room and my car was running fine. i come out and start my car everything was good. i tried to take it out of park and my shift gear was stuck. i have researched and a lot of people are having the same problems. my car is only two years old. 2008 dodge avenger. *tr
I have 28,000 miles on my 2008 dodge avenger had for 2 years and today it wont shift out of park. *tr
The latch that lets you take the car out of park is malfunctioning that only allows you to take the car out of park by pushing a pink latch button under the shifter. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. while driving various speeds, the vehicle hesitated and failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. upon starting the vehicle, all the gear shifter indicators had squares around them and the transmission had difficulty shifting into the correct gear. in addition, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
I purchased the 2008 dodge avenger last year and i've noticed not even once the brakes were newly installed at 20,000 miles you can feeling the braking system through the steering wheel. my main concern is the shifting. without warning after class the shifter would not move from park. leaving me stranded. the engine runs fine, and i followed the manual and other suggestions by the dealer. what needs to be done for this to be taken seriously? this is ridiculous and dodge needs to be held accountable. i have been to many sites regarding this issue. according to dodge they are not responsible. and warranty doesn't cover this issue! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger. while driving 30 mph, the engine seized. on other occasions, the vehicle spontaneously accelerated and then dragged. also, the driver's seat belt detached without warning and the air bag warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the thermostat, clockspring, ecm manifold, throttle body, starter, battery, air fan, integrated power module, air conditioner, compressor, intake runner, steering wheel, and engine needed to be repaired. the vehicle was taken to brockton chrysler jeep dodge ram (241020 belmont st, brockton, ma 02301, (781) 961-1550), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. the failure mileage was 36,000. the vin was invalid.
I have a 2008 dodge avenger and the vehicle is stuck in park and no manual override to correct the problem. i have done some research on the internet as well as spoke with someone with dodge/chrysler and they are aware of the problem, but have not placed a recall or tsb on the vehicle. this is a major inconvenience for me. i have researched and their are an enormous amount of concerns and complaints about this issue. *tr thank you
I have been very very disappointed with my 2008 avenger.. seems like i've experienced one problem after the other.. the first was the tpms, which a recall was made and that was fixed. 2nd i had to replace the whole gear shift because it wouldn't come out of park... i called the dealership and they advised me that they saw a significant increase on those parts and alot of the avengers were experiencing the same thing. 3rd, now the bearings inside the alternator have broke.. and i have to replace the whole alternator itself. we again called the dodge house and they also explained how many request they are getting ref this part and having to keep them in stock continuously. everyone i know that has an avenger have all experienced all of these same problems.. and my question is at what point does dodge start issuing a recall?? if dodge can call the dealerships and get a tally on all amount of replacement parts they would be surprised and realize that a recall does need to be in effect. *tr
2008 dodge avenger. i have had transmission problems since new. hard to get dodge to do anything even with my extended warranty? please help. *tr
I purchased a 2008 dodge avenger dec. 31, 2008. it was a used vehicle, the first problem may have been 5-6 months of having the car, it would stall when cranking and had cut off a couple of times when driving in traffic. i took it to the dealer and they claim they couldn't find what was wrong with it. about a month later the airbag light stays on while driving. they fix that. now 10 months after having the car i'm in the car and trying to reverse and can't. the dealer tells me that my warranty just ran out. the part costs 200.00. i can't afford that and i don't think i should because i hadn't even had the car for a year. they told me i couldn't do anything unless i had a warranty. my boyfriend's brother had to take the cover off and now everytime i want to go in reverse i have to push in this red spring in order for it to reverse. please let me know who i can talk to about this problem. it is unsafe for me to drive like this, the console is not there but i can't afford the part right now. *tr
Parked vehicle, tried to move it later, shifter assembly inside console broke and would not come out of park. disassembled, found cheap plastic parts for interlock had broken. read online that this is a common failure on 2008 and 2009 dodge avenger models. *tr
'08 avenger will not shift out of park, i done what the manual said to but no luck. this problem should be on the recall list for dodge avenger '08. *tr
This is the second time my shifter will not work. i am unable to remove out of park. i have already had to replace it once. this was a cost of 250 dollars. with in a month this piece broke again. if this is a problem that the current oem part can not fix please redesign a new one for the recall. *tr
