The timing chain needs to be replaced and is a known problem with chevrolet even though they have not done a recall. eats oil, ticks and my check engine light is on. my mechanic looked at it and said it was the timing chain. i don't have 3k to fix my car.
While driving at normal traffic and highway speeds, the vehicle will sometimes reduce speeds on its own and the transmission will drop to 2nd gear. the sevice engine light will flash and the dash will read traction control off. sometimes the engine will also misfire. the vehicle will sometimes correct itself and return to normal driving or it has to be turned off to reset. some forum users suggest replacing the throttle due to carbon buildup. this is can cause confusion with a driver which may result in a collision.
My wife was driving on the highway when it lost significant power and started rattling violently. she was able to pull into a business parking lot. stabilitrak system, traction control, check engine lights all came on. after sitting for about 10 minutes, it started back up with less violent shaking but still with reduced power, she was able to 'limp' to the pellegrino dealership in williamstown, nj. it had fault codes p0300 and p0303 for random engine misfire and cylinder 3 misfire. they diagnosed as "minimally needing cylinder #3 fuel injector plus additional diagnostics afterwards to determine full extent of issue" first threshold would be $1500 and possibly several thousand possibly including an engine replacement. they offered $2000 trade-in toward another vehicle there. with hardly any diagnostics, i was surprised of 'possible engine replacement' diagnosis, so i took the vehicle to another shop to do the fuel injector replacement plus check plugs, coils (all good), clean remaining fuel injectors and intake manifold for a fraction of what the dealership quoted. cylinder compression was good, but the same random misfire p0300 code and p0303 codes still come up and idles very rough with engine noise and significant reduced power. clearly, the injector was not the root cause of the problem. if fuel is given more aggressively, all the stabilitrak lights come back up. in doing additional research online, it appears to be a common issue. oil changes were performed routinely at the dealership since we had a "lube for life" contract. mileage is 116,640.
I was driving down the road going 45 miles an hour when the engine of the traverse just shut off while driving. i was extremely lucky that i was able to coast to a safe spot but there was no power steering. i was on a 2 lane road that gets a lot of fast traffic and was barely able to get to safety.car would not start up again but electrical was still on.traction control light lit up briefly a week before the incident. at the time of engine shut off-there were no warning lights or any indication. this is a manufacturing defect that has been well documented-so many people have complained about the exact same thing happening. i can't believe that no one is taking these vehicles off of the road! this is so crazy dangerous-someone has to do something to get these vehicles off of the road. someone is going to get killed.
My husband and i went to the store with our two kids just to grab some groceries. we live less than 5 miles from the grocery store. on our way home the car started shaking while idling and acted like it was going to stall out on us. we were in the middle of the intersection when the car decided to start sputtering, shaking violently and then shut off. thankfully enough we were able to pull into a parking lot to try and figure out what happened. after multiple attempts the car finally started back up. we were not able to go above 20 mph. we found out that the fuel pump went out so we spent the $300 to replace that. once that was replaced we thought we were in the clear. about two days later the same thing happened again except i was on the expressway doing about 70-80 mph. same thing, was able to start it up again after multiple attempts, couldn't go above 40 mph this time. about two months ago we started having p0017, p0018, p0019 trouble codes pop up. we tried to replace the sensors and they were still popping up. we cleared them, about 5-10 minutes later they would pop back up again. thursday the car was working fine. it was running great, no shaking, wasn't acting like it was going to stall out. the engine light was still on but we are now to the point that there is some sort of electrical issue going on. this is our only vehicle, and we have two kids and jobs to get to. we are tired of putting money into this trying to figure out what's wrong with it. my parents owned this car before we did. we are the second owners. i find it pretty convenient that everything starts to go downhill after warranty dates are up or after you hit a certain mileage. and with the strike that just happened, gm isn't wanting to take any responsibility for the fear of losing money yet again. issue a recall or you will end up with lawsuits. either way you will lose money. save some lives.
Tl* the contact's husband owns a 2012 chevrolet traverse. while driving 25 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle lost power. the contact managed to veer to the shoulder of the road and placed the gear in neutral. the vehicle would not restart. the insurance company towed the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the timing belt was fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was towed to harpel brothers (2305 east 10th st, glencoe, minnesota 55336, 320-864-5181) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 102,000. the vin was unknown.
I will be driving down the road, either on highway or city street and all of a sudden a warning light comes on that says service stabilitrak/reduce engine power/traction control. the next day it will run fine.
Tl* the contact owned a 2012 chevrolet traverse. while the vehicle was parked at a grocery store, the engine caught on fire. the contact stated that the entire front end of the vehicle and the engine were badly burned. the fire department extinguished the fire. a fire report was not filed. the contact stated that he was not aware of any warning indicators being illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and deemed destroyed. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the cause of the fire was not determined. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000.
While accelerating to merge back onto the highway from the exit the suv stopped accelerating. the check engine light came on and it just shut off. it was coasted to the shoulder and tried restarting it but nothing happened. checked the oil dipstick and it was reading empty. two quarts of oil was added and it still wouldn't start. the suv had been driven about 4k miles since purchased with no oil change but at no point did the oil light come on to say it was low. it was towed to rincon chevy where they said it was catastrophic internal engine failure and engine to have no compression. contacted the dealership it was purchased from, waldorf honda, and they continued to say the oil not being changed at 3k miles for the problem. they continued to ignore the fact that i called them the day after purchase that i noticed a hesitation while driving. told them a second time in person about it and was told to drive it until something happens. i have read other instances about these same types of problems. this is a major safety issue for anyone as for riding in this suv was a man, an eight month pregnant woman, and a three year old child that was traveling on a highway where speed limit was 70 mph. in the process of taking it back to the dealership where purchased. they are still putting on that it's my fault and are surprised that the warranty company is offering to pay about 30% of the cost to replace the motor. saying that replacing the motor is the only option and also the only way to figure out the hesitation issue, a possible transmission problem.
My car has been very well taken care of and still is only at 70,000 miles. prior to a 1000 mile road time with my husband and two children i went in for a regular maintenance and to prep for the trip. after getting back my struts went out, apparently a chevy defect. after paying upwards of $1,000.00 to replace and check everything we headed on the road. no less that 60 miles from home, while going 65 on the freeway, my car lost all power. power steering, ac, the whole thing just shut down! we barely made it to the side of the freeway to be safe from the traffic, again, my children are in this car in 90+ degree weather on the side of a freeway! i am now in the process and finding out that chevy, american made crap, has had this happen before to families, putting them at risk, leaving them stranded and has not done any recalls on this dangerous matter. the car didn't slow down, it lost power, it lost everything and we would have be slammed by multiple other cars if my husband didn't make a fast move off the freeway. how can a long time, again american, car manufacturer produce such a defective vehicle that can't even make it to 100k miles? so now i am paying on a vehicle that i don't even know what will cost because i have to tow it to someone while still making payments. do not buy chevy!
My complaint is while i'm driving my car is it loses all power and shuts down and most cause me to wreck, luckly i was able to come to a complete stop before wrecking. we have seen this problem with alot of chevy traverse.
The check engine light came on showing codes p0018 and p0019, the vehicle will start to idle and the traction controls come on and the vehicle goes into safety mode not able to go above 30 miles/hour. mechanic stated that it was indicating issues with timing belt, but that it was very common for this vehicle to have issues with timing belt tensioners going bad.
The vehicle began running rough on the highway and a display said service battery charging system. pulled to the shoulder and turned off car. attempted one restart but the engine sounded rough so shut it off immediately. car towed to mechanic. mechanic found 3 codes related to the timing chain and metal shavings in oil and filter. engine needs to be replaced.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet traverse. on three separate occasions, the traction control indicator illuminated and the vehicle decelerated. the vehicle lost power steering ability, but was able to coast over to the side of the road. in addition, on two occasions, the vehicle was restarted and able to drive normally. the vehicle was taken to yark chevrolet (located at 9830 waterville swanton rd, whitehouse, oh 43571, (419) 877-7658) where it was diagnosed, but a failure code could not be found. the contact also stated that the failures recurred a third time while driving 70 mph. in addition, the engine failed and the steering seized. the contact was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road, but failed to restart. the vehicle was towed back to yark chevrolet where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: [xxx]. the approximate failure mileage was 126,000. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *cc

My traverse came to sudden stop in middle of road with no warning. i had it tow to a mechanic who found the engine had seized. no lights, no noise, onstar diagnostic check was clear. traverse had 82k miles. with research and talking to multiple chevy dealership mechanics, this is a known problem happening with traverse. i was lucky not to be driving on the interstate, lucky i was driving on a side street going 25 miles. i had my children with me!!! this could have caused death to my family!!! this is a death trap and needs to be recalled before there are serious injuries up to and including death! please for the safety of our children look deeper into the issue with the engine.
While driving on the highway at 55mph my vehicle seemed to suddenly drive rough and i thought i was going to lose control or a blown tire or something. i lost power and my vehicle began to slow down on its own. things began to light up on my dash about the stabilitrak system needing servicing. this was terrifying since cars were flying by me and i was in the middle lane. this has happened more than once even on local roads at slower speeds such as 30mph. why is there no recall for this? there are so many complaints and families are in these vehicles including mine. i am also getting a check engine code for timing. my vehicle is just at 70k miles and i use it as a daily driver to/from work and primarily just in my town. furthest i drive is 20 minutes down the highway to a relative and back. please fix this with a recall! it is extremely unsafe! the recall shouldn't be issued once there is a tragic death, it should be issued before!! i've already had to deal with my wipe blades coming off and hitting each other because the bolts came loose while i was driving home in heavy rain and there was a recall for that! this stabilitrak and timing recall needs to happen.
I was driving my traverse on an on ramp to the highway when the check engine light came on. the dash said service stabilitrac, engine power reduced... just as i was about to merge into traffic. i lost acceleration and had to take the shoulder of the highway to avoid getting run over by a semi that was at highway speed! i can't believe there isn't a recall or something for this extremely dangerous issue!!
This has happened twice once with our kids in the car on the way home from the airport and once to my wife on her way home from work. both on the freeway at 65+ mph. driving fine then all of a sudden violent shaking, and loss of power. cannot steer at 65 mph that is literally deadly. service stabilitrak light comes on, traction control off light comes on, and reduced engine power light comes on. extremely dangerous and had a 6,4,and 2 year old in the vehicle. the fact that this hasn't been addressed as a recall is absolutely absurd. i went through 16 pages of complaints on a chevrolet forum about this issue. how many does it take before the problem is addressed? does someone need to die? from what i understand it may not be worth taking into a mechanic as they have not been able to nail down the issue and i don't have thousands of dollars to pour into a problem that doesnt have a sure cure. abaolutely ridiculous to be doing freeway speeds and then not be able to steer. do something about this.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet traverse. while driving approximately 30 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to bob johnson chevrolet (located at 1271 w ridge rd, rochester, ny 14615, (866) 915-9664) where it was diagnosed that the timing chain assembly needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 84,500.
Stabilitrak/ traction control turns off suddenly while driving without reason. abs brakes light comes on in message center. vehicle suddenly loses power and engine idles rough. occurs suddenly without warning leaving driver/passengers stranded in dangerous roadways. vehicle only has 70,000 miles and is serviced regularly. vehicle was serviced two months ago for this problem, where an alignment temporarily fixed the problem. two months later, problem returned.
Purchased car used in december '15. numerous times car was driving and a warning was given on dash "reduce engine owr, service stablitrak". car was takento marty feldman in livonia, mi (may 17)and per inspection stated needed new accelerator pedal which was not the problem. problems persisted with said vehicle fast fwd to march 2019 car will not start at all. victory chevy in milan, mi stated timing chain went out needs replaced. online a quick search finds these same issues with thousands of traverse n equinox models!!! a recall is needed
I noticed the car running a bit rougher than normal and advised my husband. then the car took a couple attempts to start. my husband researched the issue with an oem reader and received error codes that indicated it might be the timing chain. we took it to our mechanic who agreed but advised us that gm had a tib which extended the warranty to 120,000 miles due to a problematic issue with their timing chains. we had the vehicle towed to a gm dealership. they confirmed that the timing chain was loose and advised that it damaged the engine which would need to be replaced at the cost of $9000. my husband contacted gm several times only to be advised that, although the same issue, the tib did not apply to our vin. i have contact gm several times to discuss why this seems to be a chronic problem with traverses for several consecutive model years, however they are not willing to discuss the issue as their canned answer is it's outside the warranty period. we have 107,000 miles on our vehicle and would never have purchased this car had we been aware of the catastrophic issues with the timing chain. i have been online and see so many families experiencing this same issue with no assistance from gm. they offered us $3000 towards a new car, however, at this time, we are not in a position to readily accept a car payment. we have two sons in college and are not looking at having to go into debt to correct a problem that we don't believe we should be having. the car was at the dealership and received a 153 point inspection only 4 weeks prior to this timing chain failure and they did not report any issues to us. with the number of consumers reporting this issue, i hope there will be an investigation and compensation to those of us who trusted in gm to manufacturer a car that we could enjoy after it was paid for. we paid our final payment in november of 2018.
While driving the kids to school the dash dings and says traction control off, service stabilitrak, engine power is reduced. then my car would not go over 15mph. i am now afraid to drive this car especially with the kids as it is unsafe.
All of a sudden the vehicle displays service stabilitrak, traction control off, engine power reduced. then the vehicle has very little power to accelerate or navigate hills. when it first happened to me, i pulled out of our driveway and it just wasn't running smoothly and i had very little power to drive forward.
Car began running extremely rough with lack of power. check engine light came on and obd showed codes of p0016 and p0017. vehicle had a bad timing chain which was replaced at a cost of $3200. vehicle shows 66409 miles on the odometer.
In december of 2018 i took my car to diane sauer in warren ohio because the stabilizer traction control light came on and the car was driving very rough. i took it to diane sauer and service manager keith said nothing was wrong with it and didn't charge me for the diagnostic report. i took my car back in january 2019 with same problem but worse. so bad i got off the by-pass and had it towed. diane sauer had my car for two weeks and never called about the car. i had to repeatedly call them. after two weeks they say the engine was gone. keith told gm it was due to lack of maintenance. i provided gm and diane sauer with all receipts of my oil change. i bought that car from diane sauer brand new!!! i took care of the car and after seven years they say the engine is gone!!!! no way!!! i took great care of that car!!! diane sauer needs to stand behind their products!!!! diane sauer would not be in business without your customers who support your business!!!! stand behind your products!!!! be honest!!! the trust is gone!!!!!!
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet traverse. while driving 25 mph, the contact heard an abnormal noise and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the contact was able to drive home and had the vehicle towed to boucher chevrolet (located at 1421 e moreland blvd, waukesha, wi 53186, (262) 549-1000). the dealer diagnosed that the oil was low and the timing chain, actuator, tensioner, and crank cam needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure continued. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 109,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet traverse. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle abruptly decelerated to 20 mph. also, the traction control and reduce power check engine indicators illuminated. the failures were experienced numerous times. when the vehicle was restarted, it regained normal acceleration; however, the failure recurred more frequently. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who replaced the accelerator pedal and the accelerator sensor. the repairs did not correct the failure and the vehicle continued to lose acceleration. the speed would not exceed 20 mph. the vehicle was taken back to the mechanic who diagnosed that the crank position sensor failed and the engine timing chain stretched. the manufacturer advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in the warranted repair for the timing chain replacement, which ended in 2017. the manufacturer provided the contact with case number: [xxx]. the dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 49,300. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The service traction control light comes on and then it will give you a misfire in one of the cylinders. also the vehicle appears to almost shut down. the braking system on the car also feels funny. my mechanic has checked everything and cant find anything wrong. the stuff that i describe before is the latest things to occur.. i have complained for a long time now about the illegal tracking of this vehicle and all of my vehicles. i have made complaints to the department of justice, the media and to the internal affairs here where i live in gwinnett county georgia. this illegal tracking is being done for the purpose of gang stalking.....the tracking information on this vehicle and all my other vehicles has been shared with a large number of people.
I was driving on a flat road in the middle of rush hour traffic. the traction control light came on, shortly after the check engine light came on, and steering wheel tightened. i pulled over, shut the car off, waited a few minutes and then restarted. no lights. when i brake car, seems to take longer and then jerks to engage brakes. shop ran codes and nothing came back.
When accelerating from a stop, the car initially did not have any power and shook a lot then eventually caught up and drove normally. when putting the car in park at home, it shook again and did not stop until i turned it off.
The vehicle started making a noise in the engine, took it into the dealership and they said they thought it was something different. a week later the car started to drive badly and the engine sounded worse. after work i tried to start the vehicle and it wouldn't start. the numbers on the sensor reader stated it was the timing chain. we got it served by a mechanic and the timing chain when it slipped damaged the engine. now we haven't been able to drive the travers for over a year and we are still paying for it because we now need to put a new engine in it. the dealership and the manufacture were of no help to us. i also would like to make mention, we did have our oil changed regularly.
Driving on highway. engine began losing power, and totally lost power, as i coasted to the shoulder. no noises, no warning, no malfunction lamps until vehicle stopped. all happened within about a minute. repair shop said engine was a loss due to internal damage. the situation could have very easily become a safety issue.
I was driving with my children while exiting a highway off-ramp, and our chevy traverse suddenly malfunctioned and i temporarily lost power steering/control of the car, had no acceleration, and all instruments went wonky (turning on/off, going back and forth). i was forced to pull off the highway off-ramp onto a dangerously narrow shoulder with minimal room, and had to coast the car to the end of the off-ramp-- and then was stuck at the off ramp at a red light in rush-hour traffic. after towing the vehicle to the dealership, we replaced the battery at the suggestion of our local chevy dealership. then about 4 months later, the problem has happened again as i was exiting our driveway on my way to work. we had it towed to our local chevy dealership, and after 4 days of running diagnostics and test driving it, they finally concluded it was a faulty transmission module. we now have to pay $ 1,700.00 out of pocket to repair the car, as were one year over the 5 year warranty (but only 55k miles on the car). at the time this happened, our traverse only had approx. 57k miles on it.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet traverse. while driving 20 mph, the brake pedal was difficult to depress and failed to respond. in addition, the steering wheel failed to move left or right and the vehicle lost power. as a result, the contact crashed into a bus terminal wall. additionally, the key failed to release from the ignition. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the air bags failed to deploy. a police report was filed. the contact, passenger, and rear passenger occupant sustained chest injuries that required medical attention. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. the local dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 92,000. **tr *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet traverse. while driving 45 mph, the vehicle experienced a compete loss of power. in addition, the service stabilitrak and traction control warning indicators illuminated. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 102,163.
Vehicle was travelling forward down a city street in traffic and the engine stopped running. dealer did not specify what part of engine broke, but it was a complete engine failure and the entire engine needs to be replaced.
There were more than a few occasions were i am driving and my car will instantly slow down and the check engine light comes on and something saying traction control. i don't know exactly what that means but when i took it to my dealership the lights had went off and they just looked at me, saying that they can't fix something that's not there. it's scared me because it decreases speed while on the highway and the other cars obviously don't know what's happening and we almost got into an accident. i'm nervous about my car while driving in the road. this has happened on the streets as well as highway.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet traverse. while operating the vehicle, "reduce engine power" and "stabilitrak" suddenly appeared on the instrument panel. next, the vehicle decelerated and failed to accelerate properly. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. feldman chevrolet of livonia (32570 plymouth rd, livonia, mi) and the manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 60,000. the vin was invalid. *dt*jb
The engine started running like a old, old tractor. i was told the motor keeps losing oil pressure known that type engine has problems but yet no recall. i spent thousands of dollars to pay for a new motor and installation on this. just got that fixed and now the transmission went another expense on my part. what next!! this car is a lemon law problem!! what can i do about it? please help!! wheres the recalls?? this 2012 traverse is scary to drive not known whats next going to happen on the road. cant go anywhere that involves distance.. i was stalled in the intersections in town on a busy street with little children and an elderly lady.
Car loses power and will not start. advance auto diagnostic timing chain
While driving on a 50 mph road in my 2012 traverse the car suddenly slowed. the messages "traction control off", "engine power is reduced", "service traction control", and "service stabilitrak" came on. the sudden deceleration for apparently no reason was incredibly dangerous as well. i started the car and drove it 10 minutes later, with the same issue occurring.
Takata recall when i was driving home i had my check engine light come on and the traction control disengaged and the same time. it also reduced engine power (it also said it was on the dash board) however with no warning started to slow too quickly while i was dribing down street which speed limit is 50 mph. as i had another vehicle behind me who had to switch quickly to next lane. once i made it home i did some research on this issue and their hundreds of complaints of the same problem... i never seen so many of the same issue with the same manufacturer... i have 3 children and are mostly with me when i'm on the road. luckily i left them home this time. and no one got hurt. however, this is a major safety concern...i strongly believe if this would have happen on my way to work during rush hour on the highway. i would have had a different outcome. please look in to this a.s.a.p.
The vehicle has 86k miles and is 6 years old. over the past few weeks we have noticed a similar issue as others i have read about. the traction control light goes on....the doors lock/unlock....and the engine essentially decelerates from 60+ down to 30-40 mph quickly. i have heard that the throttle body may need to be replaced. we are going to try that and if that works, great. if it doesn't, not going to get another chevy. this is dangerous...and could eventually cause serious injury or death.
P0017, p0018, p0019, p0068, p0089, p0106, p228c 2012 traverse all of these code are on the scanner. the vehicle will slow to just about a stop going down the road. lots of lights come up on the dash, traction control and stabilitrac, the car is in the driveway and will not turn over. gm is doing nothing about this issue, i have called, considering that they have had the same issue with the engines in the traverse models. car only has 83k miles on it and gets oil changes just about every 3000 miles. from michigan
While driving up an incline the car suddenly was unable to maintain speed. it couldn't maintain speed above 40-45 mph. this occurred on a freeway with no place to pull over. i was able to bring it to my local mechanic who diagnosed several engine codes (poo18 & poo19) and recommended taking it to the dealer as this repair was beyond their capabilities. car was towed to dealer where is was diagnosed with stretched timing chains, timing off by 2 teeth, shoes & guides worn out, & 2 actuators will not park. invoice for repairs were for $4461.57. the vehicle is 6 years old and had approximately 87k miles when the incident occurred. due to car being purchased used, expired warranty , manufacturer refused reimbursement for repairs despite hundreds of similar complaints for this engine model.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet traverse. while driving approximately 55 mph, the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the timing chain was stretched and needed to be replaced. additionally, the contact stated that there was an abnormal noise coming from the engine while attempting to start the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 107,000. the vin was not available.
Timing chain. vehicle has service stabilization system and traction control messages come up on display. vehicle very sluggish and will say "reduce power" on display. driving down road at 55 mph and car goes completely limp. have to pull over to side of busy road with wife and kids in car and have to come to complete stop, no power to wheels. loud noise from engine compartment. vehicle was driving down the road.
