Making slow speed left hand turn steering would stiffen and start bucking, would occur intermittently and now on a regular basis; took veh to dealer and was advised bearing issue would cost around $900 for part and was not under warranty. this is a serious safety issue and someone is going to die from this particular problem if responsibility is not accepted and issue corrected. would be cheaper to accept than face all the wrongful death/injury lawsuits; *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet traverse. while driving approximately 55 mph the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver and the power steering stopped functioning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 51,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while turning the steering wheel, the steering wheel would seize without warning. the contact had to turn the steering wheel several times in order for the steering wheel to become loose. the failure recurred as the contact made sharp turns. the vehicle was not taken to dealer or a repair shop for inspection or repair. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was not available. the current and failure mileage was 75,000.

When it gets wet underneath the steering stops and freezes up until i can the wheels straight and it has happened to me turning either left or right the dealer checked steering belt and found it wasn't that. it is dangerous to drive when there is puddles on the roads. dealer told me to bring it back when it does it again. i have to wait until it rains. *tr

As we were driving along an on ramp to a highway as we reached 55mph the vehicle was sluggish and would "pull" constantly as we tried to accelerate all the way until we reached 65-70 mph. this started happening more and more frequently even while driving at lower speeds on city streets. again getting that "pulling" or "bucking" sensation as we tried to accelerate. we took the vehicle to the dealership and they returned it stating they found no error codes and could not duplicate the problem. after another month of the same thing happening almost daily on every commute we took the vehicle in again to the dealership. this time they were able to duplicate the "issue" and said the cause of this problem was the motor mounts which they replaced. this made absolutely no sense and sure enough the vehicle still has the same issue to this very day. 2nd issue is the steering going completely out as you make turns going at slower speeds such as making a left hand turn or turning in to a parking space. as i started making a turn in to a parking space i had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the car next to the empty space i was trying to go into because it felt like the "power steering" went out and could not turn the wheel at all. we have taken the vehicle to the dealership and power steering fluid and pump are working "fine" according to mechanics. i can not believe there has not been a recall on this issue since many traverse owners have the same problem which is a major safety concern especially when we are talking about not being able to control a vehicle going around 25-30 mph in a parking lot or making turns in front of oncoming traffic (left turns). please help with these issues. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the power steering assist failed. the contact stated that he had to shut off and restart the vehicle in order for the vehicle to function properly. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they stated that the power steering pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified but no assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 50,000.

The 2009 chevrolet traverse has known steering problems, power steering pump, gears, etc. in talking to the local dealership, chevy knows of this issue but continues to offer no assistance in a solution. according to the service technician, the problem is based on a poor design in the pump housing and gear assembly with the power steering, as he states..."the pump is too small". the problem is in turning at low speeds, turning into parking spaces, driveways, or secondary roads. the steering wheel shakes or feels like a loss in power, and the steering wheel is almost impossible to turn. the dealership states that the cost to replace the pump and gear is an estimated 1200.00. this issue needs to be resolved by chevy, not the consumer. *tr

I began noticing that my steering wheel would make a clicking noise. then a while later, i began to notice it was increasingly harder to make sharp left/right turns into parking spaces. i took in my vehicle at 53,000 miles and they said the steering gear had failed. it took 2 days to repair and almost $1400. then i'm driving the car less than a day and can't again turn into a parking space. i cranked the wheel with all my might to get it parked. i took my car back and they now say it's a power steering failure! why does a 2 1/2 yr old car have failing parts?! *tr

I bought my traverse new in 2009 and absolutely love my crossover, however about two years after purchase i started having loss of power steering while driving. i took the car back to the dealer on more then one occasions to no avail they tell me they can't find anything wrong. i've looked online and i see numerous owners with the same problem. i've loss power steering while parking, backing up, making left or right turns i feel like a hostage with this automobile since there seems to be no known solution. i received a phone call from a mechanic who's aware of my problem and he informed me that there is a recall on the (steering:electric power assist system) however i don't see my model vehicle listed. i need help and would like to know what to do now that there is a recall on the steering but it doesn't include my vehicle. *tr

For several years i have been having ongoing problems with the power steering on my traverse. i have seen countless other similar claims on chevy forums. i have had dealer replace parts, but problems return. chevy offered some owners a repair for vehicles under 150000 miles or 10 years, but now i have gone past that they refuse to cover repair. this loss of steering control is unsafe and a more permanent remedy should be taken care of on this material defect from gm.

Loud thumping noise when turning the steering wheel. sounded like something fell out of the front end of the car. car dealership replaced rack and pinion and bled power steering and set toe. found noise traced to internal rack failure which caused clunk when turned back and forth. repaired 3/2011

When my vehicle was 2 years old and had approximately 35,900 miles, i started hearing a low whining noise in the steering column whenever the steering wheel was turned. the intermittent noise continued, so i had the vehicle serviced on 2/18/11 with mileage of 36,379. the dealership was unable to duplicate the noise. the noise continued getting worse; became louder and constant. i had the vehicle serviced on 8/24/11 with mileage of 44,248. the dealership determined the steering gear was failing and needed replacement. since the vehicle was no longer under warranty, i had to pay $1212.80. it's very disheartening to have a repair of this magnitude on a 2 year old vehicle with low mileage. i purchased this traverse brand new to avoid the costly repairs of older vehicles. apparently, i made a bad decision. this vehicle has already had 3 safety recalls and the steering gear should be made the 4th.

Power steering makes odd, high-pitched squeaking noises, sometimes chatters and has completely failed on several occasions. this has been happening since we purchased the car in 2011 with only about 12,000 miles. i have asked the dealership about this every time the car was serviced and was told this is normal. i don't see how it's normal to be driving a car and suddenly have no steering. i am honestly scared every time i leave my driveway that this will cause an accident and injure someone. now, the dealer finally admits there is something wrong - needs power steering pump and rack & pinion. but it now has 94,000 miles, so they won't repair it.

Since mid-'10, our '09 traverse has had issues with the power steering. when the problem first surfaced, it was primarily limited to sharp turns into parking spaces. the steering would seize and it would be difficult to turn into the spot. we took the traverse to the dealer in 10/10 when the mileage was 21,129. the problem was diagnosed as an "internal steering gear failure (binding). the power steering gear was replaced and the power steering system bled. the problem seemed better. the seizing occurred much less. however, in the past few months we noticed a rapid decline. now the problem has surfaced when driving down the road and trying to make a turn (left or right) onto another road/driveway/etc. the wheel seizes so much that my husband is almost incapable of turning the wheel. this is a serious safety hazard. we brought the vehicle into the dealer on 5/22/13 when the mileage was 61,287. this time the problem was diagnosed as "steering gear leaking". the dealer stated that the problem was not covered under warranty, but because the problem was not properly addressed back in october 2010 (when it was covered), they would do us a favor and cover it at a pro-rated amount. the repair (replacing the power steering gear for a second time and bleeding the power steering system) only cost us $456 out of pocket. two days later the problem resurfaced, and even worse than before. i will not drive the car anymore, out of fear that i am not strong enough to turn the wheel if the problem occurs. i fear for my family's safety when we are riding in it. we have an appointment at the dealership for this friday. hopefully this time it will be repaired. i am not optimistic. it is inexcusable that there is not a recall on this issue yet. this website, and several others, reveal that hundreds -- if not thousands -- of vehicle owners are experiencing this same issue. *tr

Steering wheel whining noise when turning. pulsating and a stiff turning in a parking lot or when going slow. dealer is now going to replace the steering rack. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while turning at various speeds, a whining noise was heard as steering became difficult to maneuver. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined that the power steering pump, rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 25,000. the vin was unavailable.

Steering wheel makes strange noise when turning the steering wheel. pulsating and a little stiffer turning in a parking lot or going slow. *tr

Vehicle makes noise when turning sometimes vibrates. dealer says its the steering rack. *tr

Steering wheel whining noise when turning. pulsating and a stiff turning in a parking lot or when going slow. dealer replaced sic coil, fixed temporary. *tr

Steering was making a whining sound when turning the wheel. this happened within 3 months of purchase of the vehicle. since it was under warranty, chevy "fixed" the problem. 2 years later after the "fix" the steering is again making the whining sound when turning the wheel. the vehicle is no longer under warranty. we haven't yet had chevy look at the problem again, but judging by the other complaints in the nhtsa database, we will likely have to shell out over $1000 to get this problem fixed again. *tr

Steering wheel pulsating and making strange noise when turning the steering wheel. *tr

Chevy traverse has had a funny noise when making sharp turns since purchase. took back to dealer and they said power steering fluid low. this has happened for 5 years. finally when out of manufacturer warranty i am told it needs new power steering pump. i found recall to get it paid for, but power steering fluid still leaking. they now say i need new rack and pinion assembly. cost of at least $1200 for something that has been a problem since i have owned the vehicle. why will chevrolet fix part of the problem, but not all of it. what happens if i wait to fix and power steering goes out and someone gets hurt? sounds like a quick lawsuit for chevrolet. i think its time to pay for your mistake!!!! *tr

Steering made noise within first year of purchase. was told nothing was wrong with vehicle after each scheduled service. steering became stiffer and noisier over time. paid $1,100 to replace the steering housing and other related parts in july, 2015.

I have a 2009 traverse lt. after owning the car 3 months we started experiencing a "bucking issue" when turning at slow speeds and coming off highways on curves.very dangerous!, the steering wheel pulls in the opposite direction you are steering in a rhythmic pattern. chevy replaced the entire rack & pinion system - still had the same issue. the car has been back many times and bleed over 24 hour period. still the same issue. chevy insists there are no recalls or alerts on this problem but clearly from posts on the internet there are problems. the car is now 4 years old with 45,000 miles on it - mostly local driving. still very concerned that with my wife and kids using the car mostly the bucking may pull the car in the opposite direction when exiting an off ramp. i have been a loyal chevy owner since i was 16 but this issue has happen to so many people i can't understand why they cannot identify and fix the problem. i fear that it will take a major incident to bring this issue to light. *tr
