We have classified the 222 complaints from 2009 Chevrolet Traverse about STEERING into the following categories.
My 2009 chevrolet traverse won't go into reverse and also won't switch gears on time while driving with the steering so stiff
It's very hard to turn the wheel. when trying to turn in or back up it's extremely hard to turn.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet traverse. while attempting to make a turn, the steering lost power without warning. the vehicle was taken to berger chevrolet (616-949-5200, located at 2525 28th st se, grand rapids, mi 49512) where it was diagnosed that the power steering needed to be replaced. the contact was informed that the warranty did not cover the failure. the manufacturer stated that there was an extended warranty and they would contact the dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 126,000.
Unsafe car to drive in with my kids. i have no traction control and very sporadic power loss! i was driving with my kids going about 30mph and spun out of control around a curve with my kids in the car. thank the lord no one was hurt and neither was the vehicle. i try to take off from a light or stop sign and it'll either take off super fast and almost hit the car in front of me, or take off slow with no power and almost get rear ended. i bought this car used 6 months ago and the last 3 months have been very frustrating with issues of this vehicle. i've already put $300 into it and now it's saying to change the cat converter. i called the #1 local shop to get a quote and he actually said his number one supplier has stopped issuing this part to chevy traverse because of all the recalls! so what do i do now????? i am a medical courier and this traverse is my source of income. i've always loved chevys and don't buy any other brand, but c'mon. i don't have $3000 to fix electrical issues!! especially when it is a manufacturers default and mistake!! very unsatisfied :(
Power steering failing while turning and is difficult to turn.
When i turn from a stop it's like i don't have any power steering and it's difficult to turn the wheels. it's happened often but getting worse
Power steering becomes hard to turn when turning a corner or trying to park in a parking spot.not making any noise but steering gets really stiff
Power steering is very hard to turn at slow speeds i have checked power steering fluid and it's full i'm very afraid this may cause me to lose control if it would happen going down the hwy please let me know what can i do.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet traverse. while approaching a stop sign, the steering wheel was difficult to maneuver in both directions when attempting to turn. the contact pulled over to the side of the road and inspected the vehicle, but found not visible failure. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion may need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact called gerry lane buick gmc (6615 florida blvd, baton rouge, la 70806, (225) 341-5413). the vehicle was not diagnosed, but the dealer stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 168,500.
Traverse stopped at a city intersection and failed to move or start after that. timing chain broke at 158,000 causing damage to catalytic converters. failure of power steering was an ongoing problem for months that caused wheels to lock up during turns and then suddenly release causing much over correction because of having to pull so hard on the steering wheel when it would go out.
Stabilitrak/traction control problems i am the owner of this vehicle that has 165,000+ miles on it. we have repaired/replaced about $6900: in 2017 evap purge valve, in 2017 upper coolant hose, 2016 water pump gasket, timing chain, 2014 catalytic converter and gaskets, 2014 water pump and front motor mount, in 2009 reverse clutch plate. now the stability trac and traction lights both came on stating to service the brake system when you are in motion and come to a stop. plus today, the ac does not come now. one vehicle with one owner should not have this many problems. chevy has got to issue a recall on this 2009 model. class action lawsuit, something needs to be done.
I have been battling my check engine light all 2018 and now 2019. not to mention the stabiliztrak and hard to turn steering wheel. i have been getting a misfire in all my coils. this issue has caused the vehicle to stutter, drink high volumes of gas and almost sent me broke. i have changed every coil, every plug, changed the stabilizer, tentioner, bearings, swaybar links and much more. i am completely done with chevy. they know this make and midel is horrible and we as customers need to do a class action lawsuit. this vehicle sounds like a tin can when it starts. it rattles and stutters while driving and it shakes when stationary.
Power steering just went out as i was driving. power steering fluid full
I was driving down the street i came to a stop. as i began to go i tried to turn right and i couldn't turn the wheel it was so hard. reminded me of my first car i had when i had a leak with my steering fluid. so at that point i try to brake and my brakes failed. i don't know what happened i began to roll backwards and the first thing i thought of was to push down as hard as i could and slammed it into park. while all this was going on not one single engine light came on or brake light nothing. there was absolutely no warning. i turned the car off then back on and it was as if nothing had happened. luckily it was on a very quite and non-busy street and my kids weren't with me.
On three separate occasions within the past year, the power steering has gone out in my 2009 chevy traverse while i am driving. on two occasions, it was raining and my power steering went out as i was turning - both instances on a city street. the third instance was on a city street (in a neighborhood) and the power steering again went out as i was going around a turn. there was a small amount of water on the road but it was not raining at the time. in all three instances, the vehicles was in motion, turning, and on a city street. it is unknown to me what the cause of the problem was, but quite scary when the power steering goes out. the last two incidents were close together and within the last couple of weeks (during july 2017).
2009 chevrolet traverse steering "locks up" almost like losing power steering when turning (often at low speeds like around roundabouts) and need to use all my strength to make successful turn without hitting vehicles around me then all of the sudden it "gives" and is ok and overcorrecting occurs because i am using all my strength to make the turn .... very similar to many other complaints that i've read online about the same issue in the same make/model/year vehicle
Good afternoon. i have a 2009 chevy traverse ls. i was having problems with my power steering and received the special coverage notice number 14329 to have the repairs done. according to notice, the power steering system was supposed to be flushed, the steering pump replaced and a new steering gear installed. i recently went in for an oil change at the chevy dealership in lowell and came across some issues with the steering. there was fluid leaking from the power steering pump and gear. it hasn't been a year and if these were replaced last july this problem should not be occurring again. how do i go about having this problem resolved? thank you
Power steering completely fails when making low speed turns (ex. into a parking space, at an intersection...etc.). steering gets very stiff that at times i cannot complete the turn. have to stop and reverse to straighten out. been very close to hitting vehicles because of it. from what i am researching, i understand this is a widespread problem with these vehicles. what i don't understand is why there hasn't been a recall to fix it. i guess the industry doesn't see it as big issue since they aren't the ones driving these cars and putting their own lives, family's lives and others on the road at risk. it's easy for them to say "fix it on your own" or "just buy another car". but for those who can't and depend on their vehicle day in and day out, it's a big problem. i would understand if it was normal wear and tear or if no one else was having these problems, but its not. it's a big problem all over the u.s. fix it please !!!
A periodic failure of the power steering had occurred from when the vehicle was new. sometimes 2 to 3 times a month but sometimes not for several months. dealer "unable to duplicate problem. bring it in when it is doing it". only lasted through 1 to 2 turns and then it was fine. it has done this sense new. a month ago it started doing this all the time. 8 out of 10 turns you would loose steering. my wife ran off into the gutter several times. i took it to a local trusted repair shop and was told there have been hundreds of complaints regarding this same problem and g.m has not addressed it. repair cost $900.00 . i looked on-line and it was true. there is even a class action suit filed due to this issue. (mainly at low speed turns but not always).
When decelerating or moving slowly, the car intermittently experiences a complete loss of power steering. my wife is barely able to turn the steering wheel.
Loss of steering due to leaking steering gear assembly.
At low speeds it get hard to steer. took it to the dealer not sure what is wrong with it.
Takata recall...when im driving my steering wheel seems to lock up ...and it also cause a bad shaking.
There is loss of power steering assist when traveling at low speeds. it is unsafe as the vehicle becomes hard to steer when turning left or right. this issue is known to the auto-maker and they only want to replace power steering pump and fluid. the power steering gear is leaking and gm should recall this unsafe part. the steering function of an automobile is critical as human lives are at the mercy of this component of the vehicle to operate as designed.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet traverse. while driving various speeds, the steering wheel seized. the steering wheel required excessive force. when making a left or right turn, there was an abnormal noise coming from the steering wheel. there were no warning lights illuminated at the time of the failure. while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel was difficult to maneuver. the manufacturer was notified and no repair was performed. the failure mileage was 100,000.
2009 chevy traverse with 98xxx miles on it. we have been having issues for the past 40,xxx+ miles that we've had it. the steering will intermittently seize up while driving, making it near impossible to make a turn. it takes my entire body weight to turn the wheel and at times it lets loose almost causing me to overcorrect. i will sometimes have to make several corrections before getting into a parking spot. it is a very unsafe situation that gm needs to correct as it is seemingly a universal issue.
2009 chevy traverse with 68000 miles. vehicle has had steering problems which i brought to dealer while under warranty. was told that sound (squeel/rev) was normal. now car not under warranty. noise getting louder. take to dealer. says i need new power steering pump, and rack and pinion. i notice there is a special coverage 14329 which covers power steering issues (pump etc.). price quoted to fix everything was $2500. i asked for price relief given the history of the power steering problems, i had raised the issue while under warranty, and the special coverage. dealer and gm refuse to offer any reimbursement. not even for the pump which is covered under special coverage 14329. i am now out $2500. this steering system was a lemon from the get go. steering is a major safety issue. this should have been recalled fro all vehicles in the 2009-11 range for traverse/acadia/enclave. it is not only irresponsible, but gross negligence not to address this problem and pass the problem to the customer.
Steering whine, some loss of steering control. called dealer first said rack covered on day of appointment, rack not covered. called gm, won't cover. case 8-2095354928.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet traverse. while turning right at 5 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. the failure recurred numerous times while turning. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering pump failed, which caused the rack and pinion to fail. the power steering pump was repaired under a customer satisfaction campaign, but the rack and pinion was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that the vehicle had no specific failures other than failing an inspection. the contact called a dealer (lannan chevrolet, 40 winn st, woburn, ma 01801, (781) 897-0508) to inspect and diagnose the failure. the manufacturer did not send a notification of any extended warranty campaigns; however, the vehicle was included in a water pump seal leak, power steering, transmission, and additional service campaigns. after the dealer's repairs, the vehicle was rode roughly and the engine indicator illuminated two days later. the vehicle was towed back to the dealer who indicated that further diagnostic testing was required. the vehicle had been at the dealer for longer than two weeks with no resolution. the manufacturer was notified and refused to provide a remedy for the several extended warranty campaigns, of which some were not completed, but the dealer specified on the invoice that the vehicle was serviced. the vehicle was not repaired and was unable to be driven. the approximate failure mileage was 113,000.
Had my steering pump replaced at the dealership on a recall told me to watch my steering the rack and pinion did not get replaced on february 19th 2016 picking up my boys front and start shaking check power steering fluid it's on the low side been told it's my rack and pinion. also my tire monitoring system like you can i coming on and off has been check codes are not saving when off same thing when i had my transmission redone codes are not saving on the computer.
I've been reading numerous complaints about the steering problem with the 2009 chevy traverse and i don't understand why gm has yet to issue a recall on the steering issues. there have been times when i try to turn either left or right where the steering starts to stiffen up making it difficult to turn. or if i'm pulling out of a parking space, trying to turn is an issue. this is a serious fatality waiting to happen. are they going to wait until the lawsuits start coming in before they do something?
While making a left hand u turn the power steering quit, nearly causing a serious accident
My power steering stopped working. the dealership replaced the pump, but said it stopped working becasue the rack and pinion steering was leaking. the rack and pinion steering replacement cost is $2100, which i need to pay. i do not understand why the rack and pinion steering is not part of this special coverage adjustment, when it is the cause of the part replaced as a result of the special coverage adjustment. i am also concerned that this is not a recall. when the power steering stops working, it is very dangerous. if there has not been an accident or death as a result of this problem, there soon wlill be, in the past year i havee spent $6,000 on repairs for this car, which has 82,000 miles. i have replaced the brake line for $1500, $2000 for replacement of 3 ignition coils and 3 spark plugs and a gasket. this is the second time i have had to replace a spark plug. now, i have been asked to spend $2100 to replace the rack and pinion steering. enough is enough, i am trading in this car before another very expensive problem develops. the labor cost for repairs is very expensive because the engine needs to be removed to reach the section that needs to be replaced. i was told that these problems happen as cars get older, but the number of problems the traverse has versus the number of problems cars of similr mileagr has seems to be lopsided. this experience has soured me on ever purchasing a chevrolet again.
The wife complained about brakes sounding odd, a week after having new brakes installed. took it in, they said they looked fine. then all of a sudden her anti-lock break light and stabilitrak light go off while driving to work on a major surface street (50mph). take it in to have it checked out, they find a sensor in the brake cylinder is bad, and the cylinder is gushing brake fluid. $800+ to fix. plus our power steering is going bad. there is an internal leak in some boots that are not working properly. $1200 to fix. it's like they had a bunch of parts lying around, and they slapped them together to build a vehicle, even though none of the parts work together. the government should never have wasted the money to prop up a horribly inefficient company.
We had a power steering noise. took to our chevy dealership. recommended power steering pump replacement under special coverage 14329(bulletin/extended warranty) they found fluid leaking out of the front rack power steering boots. recommended replacing rack & pinion & proforming a front end alignment at a cost of $1119.05 to me. we feel that this repair should be covered by gm since it is also all part of the power steering system. we discovered thru the internet that there is a class action lawsuit on the 2009 traverse steering system.
Took my car into dealership martin chevrolet because check engine light came on. since my car was new in 2009 my steering on my car has always been hard to turn. i asked them within a year of getting car but said nothing was wrong. well the power steering water pump and steering gear assembly was leaking. also my timing chain was defected. there was an extended warranty for the timing chain and pump but not the steering gear assembly. my car has less than 50,000 miles on it. chevy knows that the steering has been defected but would not cover the gear assembly so it cost me $934.19 to fix. chevy should cover the cost for everything!!
I have been having issues for several months now regarding the steering. the problem is now occurring more often. at times the steering becomes stiff making it difficult to turn. basically the power steering ceases to function mid-turn without any warning. the vehicle goes into manual steering and it is almost impossible to turn the wheel. i have had this occur when attempting to pull in or out of a parking space, turn in a parking garage, turn in a store parking lot, making a turn at a traffic light, etc. i have mentioned this issue to the dealer but said they could not find a problem with the steering. i had the rack and pinion replaced two years ago but it was not because of this problem. the dealership was making others repairs and noted that rack and pinion needed replacement. i have not received a recall notice regarding this issue. i noticed that there are numerous complaints regarding the same issue with the steering. why is this problem not a recall? this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed before it causes a fatality. the steering problem concerns me and i am currently looking for another vehicle.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet traverse. while reversing, the steering wheel seized and required excessive force. the failure recurred on several occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000. updated 11/18/15*lj the consumer stated the dealer found that both of the front struts needed to be replaced and have the vehicle alignment done. the traverse could not be driven after the replacement of the failed power steering pump. updated 2/3/2016 *js *cn
Good morning, i have been having problems with my steering when it comes to making turns, one time i nearly hit the curb trying to pull into my driveway. the power steering fluid was recently filled but the problem still remains. i've researched this issue and noticed this problem has occurred with other consumers. i know there was a safety bag and seat belt recall a few months back which was taken care of and now i would like to know how long will it take to issue the power steering recall. gm has had a lot of problems, and it's time for them to step up correct their errors. it's a reliable car, and i love it, but with safety issues like this something has to change.
On saturday august 1, 2015 around 7 pm i was driving back from a family theme park with my 5 children. i had to drive 2 hours to get back home. i couldn't even get out of the parking lot because i couldn't turn the wheel it was very hard both right and left. i got scared because i am pregnant and i wanted to get back home safely. i manage to get out but on our way home every time i stopped and had to make a turn it got really hard and had to put my emergency lights on because i had to make slower and wide turns and sometimes back up and try again to turn. i manage to get home around 10 pm. this is my only car, i just bought it 8 months ago and still have 3 more years to pay it off. this is the second time it does this. when i first got it out of the dealer i took it back the next day because it was doing the same problem but only when turning to one side not both. they fixed it but it is not even a year and i have the problem again but worst because i cant' turn either way. if there is a problem with the steering wheel why haven't you recall it? it is dangerous to drive like this. i just fixed a few months ago some transmission parts because the transmission broke. i know that the transmission is a issue in this car also. these are seriously safety issues. please help me out.
When attempting to turn at low speeds the power steering suddenly fails and vehicle crosses into traffic.
Sudden and unexpected loss of power steering at low speeds. turning the vehicle at low speeds suddenly becomes very, very difficult as vehicle's power steering assist stops working with no warning.
At low speeds, especially while braking, the power steering fails. this has caused several close accidents. the loss of steering only occurs at low speeds; for example while turning into a driveway, driving a store parking lot, or making a turn at a traffic light.
I was driving and the vehicle starting losing power then it wouldn't start. after a while of sitting it started then lost power again now it won't stay started. *tr
Power steering ceases to function at low speeds, as in no power steering at all. has caused near collision several times during slow speed turns as power steering ceases to function mid-turn without warning. this causes manual steering mode on a large car in a tight space. has also happened at moderate speeds. manual steering on this car is difficult for an adult male. nearly impossible for my lady drivers. again, significant safety hazard as it occurs with no warning.
The steering gear in my 2009 chevy traverse has failed prematurely for a second time. the problem was diagnosed during a routine oil change at my local dealership. the original steering gear was replaced at 46,000 miles in 2011 and my vehicle requires a new unit approximately 43,000 miles later. failure to replace the componant will result in steering difficulty that can lead to a crash. to put this in perspective, i am replacing the steering gear at the same frequency one would normally buy new tires for vehicle. there are several indications there is a problem with general motors' lamda platform. via a 2012 service bulletin, gm modified the steering gear part number and made changes to the replacement process to prevent steering gear seal failures. secondly, a service manager at an independant chevy dealership confirmed that he has seen a significant increase in steering gear failures at his facililty. lastly, there are hundreds of documented complaints on the nhtsa site and chevy internet forums describing this exact problem. despite the evidence above, gm will not replace the steering gear and cover the cost 100%. the corporation is not standing behind their chevy product but, more importantly, i believe their complaint resolution processes are masking a clear quality and safety issue. i hope the nhtsa can effect some change. *tr
Brought vehicle in for oil change, tech noted steering gear was leaking fluid and quoted $2000 to replace. after reading the tsb, several forums online and these complaints it has become apparent that rack failure is common place on these vehicles. *tr
Steering is loud. hard to turn. april 09, 2015 dealership stated my steering gears were leaking and needed rack and pinion replaced. quoted $1785. it's difficult to steer, locks up and is quite unsafe. chevy should repair this issue at no cost due to the safety concerns and the thousands and thousands of complaints.
The steering wheel catches and i cant turn. i got the pump replaced and i am still having the same problem. some people have had recall sent to them for this problem but i have not received anything.
