Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

Speedometer stopped working yesterday as wife drove home. 2005 chevrolet trailblazer suv only has a bit over 53,000 miles. can't tell how fast or slow we're going now. seems like a defect that should not occur to vehicles at this age/mileage, let alone any age. typical gm "quality" i guess. this defect has the ability to affect driver safety and is obviously not rare judging by others who've written on the internet about it, i believe a recall is in order. have not taken for repair yet, but was told gm will not cover the cost and that it will cost around $500 to fix. *tr

Gas gauge malfunctioning, engine light keeps coming on and off. in looking at different web-sites, this is common for this vehicle. i purchased the vehicle on 06/20/2010 and have had several things go wrong in the (8) months that i have owned it.

I have any issues with my fuel gauge and dash reading for years now. i thought it was an issue with just my truck but in reading other complaints it seems as there is an issue. i bought my truck new and currently have 178,000 miles on it. i was told bythe dealer that the gas gauge issue would not be covered as it's 10 years or 120,000 which every came first. my dash board has not been working for some time first it was the speedometer and then the oil and other's components soon followed. *tr

Yes my fuel gauge does not tell me the correct fuel amount in the fuel tank ,when i fill my tank up with gas. the gauge goes to empty and when driving it goes back and forth between empty and full its just a inconvenience not knowing if you are going to run out of gas or not there should be a recall on this vehicle because this seems like a ongoing problem also ill be driving and the headlights will just start flickering on and off please recall this vehicle and have gm fix this problem thank you . *tr

The fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge and speedometer have stopped working. the fuel gauge reads empty when the tank is full. the oil pressure gauge hovers around 80 or points straight down. the speedometer will read 120 mph when stopped at a red light, or will read 30 mph when on the highway traveling at the same speed as other cars, generally in the 55-65 mph range. the speedometer issue is incredibly unsafe, as you have no way to know your true speed. the oil pressure gauge is unsafe as well, as you have no way to know if/when you're really having an oil pressure problem. my calls to gm have resulted in no resolution, as i was told that i shouldn't need the speedometer since i can "feel" how fast i'm going (as stated by a gm representative).

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving approximately 60 mph the speedometer displayed 90 mph as the vehicle mileage increased to 100,000 miles. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for the failure. approximately a year ago the oil pressure gauge malfunctioned and the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 102,000.

About 2 weeks ago the speedometer in my 2005 chevy trailblazer stopped working properly. the only thing out of the ordinary was the nearly 16 inches of snow that we got in the chicagoland area. at first it would not move, then it read that i was going 30 mph while the car was in park. now it is stuck past 120 mph. i am unemployed, still trying to make car payments on this car and do not have the $500 + that chevy has told me they would charge me to fix this problem that i am sure they are well aware of with this make, model and year suv. *tr

Speedometer quits working and engine light comes on. it has happened twice. once on december 4th and yesterday january 29th. both times on the freeway. *tr

Driving down the road at 50 mph and then you slow down. the speedometer stays at 50 mph then when you speed up it goes up accordingly. when you stop the car completely the speedometer says you are still going 30 mph. then you have to shut the vehicle off and start it to try and reset it. doing this only takes 8 mph off so it takes a while. it seems to do it more in the cold weather than in warm weather. i think this is a major safety issue, due to the fact that you have no idea how fast/ slow you are truly going. and when the speedometer does decline with your speed it is very jerky and sticks. *tr

I have a trailblazer lt and the lights have a serious flickering problem going down the road. it is actually dangerous! when you are driving down the road the lights just flicker to oncoming traffic. chevy claims this is a normal problem with trailblazers. there has been no corrections for this problem. i explained how would this person feel if they had their child in the car when your trailblazer was facing oncoming traffic and your lights flickered causing the opposing traffic to come into your lane? this is not safe....someone needs to do something about this issue and find out what the problem is and recall it!!! *tr

The speedometer won't go back to zero and sticks making it look like you are going 90-120 mph. it cost $450 to get the cluster panel replaced and should be under the recall along with the chevrolet trucks. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving various speeds, the contact noticed that the speedometer would fail intermittently and the oil gauge failed completely and would not provide a reading. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics where the technician advised that the instrument panel cluster had to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 81,000.

Bought this vehicle used in oct 2010. not long thereafter, noticed the speedometer wouldn't work all the time - normally it works when i first start driving but when the vehicle warms up, it stops working all together. i think it's a safety issue if you do not know how fast you are going. the cruise control also doesn't work once in a while. most of the time it does, but occasionally i can't get it to go on at all. *tr

Speed-o-meter erratic and does not register properly. sometimes does not work at all. has resulted in being stopped and ticketed by law enforcement for speeding. *tr

We just purchased a 2005 chevy trailblazer ls 4wd, we have had it for four days and today the speedometer stopped working, it has wound all the way around, we pulled over and tried to restart the car in the attempt to reset it. we had to drive all the way home without being able to tell at what speed we were driving, which is highly unsafe. in my belief this is misleading information, by not knowing how fast you are going. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer. the gauges on the instrument cluster malfunctioned and no longer display the correct information. the dealer confirmed that the instrument cluster needed to be replaced. the vehicle will be repaired by the dealer but not under warranty. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 84,000.

Instrument cluster replaced 1 1/2 years ago because of faulty instrument and speedometer readings. january of 2011 gas gauge malfunctioning reads empty when tank has been filled, and continues to misread levels at all times. *tr

The fuel gauge does not work. this seems to be a very common problem, and gm's only remedy is to screw over consumers by making them pay for a known defective part out of pocket. this should be recalled and fixed at gm's expense, or they should at least offer a discount. their $800.00 estimate is silly. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving approximately 5 mph, the contact noticed that the speedometer did not indicate the correct speed. other components on the instrument cluster were also not functioning properly. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the instrument cluster needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the problem occurred again. the failure mileage was approximately 98,000 and the current mileage was approximately 114,000.

2005 chevrolet trailblazer...a couple of days ago, while my 15 year old daughter was driving this truck the speedometer got stuck on 10mph and she could not tell how fast she was really driving. we were on a back country road (thank god) not in heavy traffic but i know she had to be going at least 45mph. she has just gotten her learner's permit a few weeks earlier and did not have much experience driving so this really freaked her out. now the speedometer will work when you first start the truck but if you come to a stop it will stick again and at times it will read higher than what i am actually traveling. like this morning, upon starting the truck before it was ever put into drive the speedometer read 10mph. this could be a very hazardous defect and gm should recall this problem and fix it. in researching, i see that there have been many complaints about the speedometers in these trucks, yet gm has done nothing to resolve the problem. it is costing consumers approx. $500-$750 to repair. i have gotten an estimate of $600 myself but have not had the repairs completed yet. no money to do so and hoping my warranty will cover it. *tr

Speedometer quits working or reads completely wrong, very dangerous. *tr

2005 chevy trailblazer...power to instrument panel including radio cuts in and out leaving a variety of warning lights lit and low fuel warning audio signal going off. resets when ignition is turned off, but happens again when car is started and happens in irregular intervals for the entire time the car is running. the door locks (including hatchback) do not always unlock when car is stopped, and interior lights and radio sometimes stay on. all gauges (gas, oil, temperature, etc) go to zero. after talking to a mechanic friend, we took the dashboard apart, pulled out the cluster and put it back in. that appears to have stopped the problem for now, but we have not used the vehicle much since doing the repair. we have been told it could require a new cluster costing in the $400 range not including labor. it is interesting that 2003-04 vehicles with this problem were covered by a special policy, but not the 2005. *tr

2005 trailblazer gas gauge fluctuates wildly. we have been trying to monitor the tank by tracking mileage. my wife used the car and inadvertently subtracted the miles incorrectly and ran out of gas in the fast lane of the 405 freeway !! a very dangerous situation. no one was hurt, just a lot of stress and a rescue mission. the gauge now stays on, or just above empty. chevy dealer wants 800.00 for repair and says it's not their problem. my on-line research shows thousands of this car have the identical symptom. most definitely their problem !! in addition, the speedometer has a mind of it's own. i was pulled over on the i 15 for doing 88 when my speedometer read 70. (i'm 58 and have never had a ticket) on pulling over the speedometer came to rest at 25 mph. the officer understood and let me go with a warning to get it fixed. my problem....i need chevy to fix it !! *tr

My speedometer recently quit working completely. *tr

The speedometer on my instrument panel cluster malfunctioned. problems included the needle sticking in one place, not moving down when decelerating, and even spinning to the "6 o'clock" position below the gauge. i called chevrolet to find out information and they were not able to offer me any help or reimbursement assistance. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy blazer that we took on a trip to nashville. on the interstate we realized that our speedometer kept going up and everyone was passing us. by the time we made it to an exit the speedometer had made it all the way around to d (drive) at the bottom of dash. when we stopped it would only go back to 50. when we stopped at autozone the guy told us he has seen this in 2 of the trailblazers that is family owns. we were going to have it checked but the next day the speedometer decided to somewhat work, now it is about 5 miles off. i have been told that it probably will happen again. *tr

Faulty speedometer. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that the vehicle fuel gauge was defective. the contact mentioned that the gauge would display that the fuel tank was empty right after refueling. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who offered to pay for half of the repair costs. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 96,780. the dash light will go on and off by themselves the door chime does not always work the radio does not always work goes on and off and loud then quite. updated 11/03/2011 *ln *tr

I have a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer with what appears to be a faulty gas gauge. the gas gauge suddenly stopped working in late-2010 and now remains on 'e' most of the time, regardless of how much gas is in the tank. although infrequent, the needle has at times began to jump from 'e' to in between a 1/4-1/2 tank. the consequences of this failure are that i have to closely monitor my mileage at all times, reset the mileage each time i refill my gas tank, and notify any persons other than myself that drive my vehicle that the gas gauge does not function properly. nothing has been done to correct the failure as the part is quite expensive, i do not feel a gas gauge should break so easily on a 2005 vehicle, and i am hoping the vehicle will eventually be recalled for this specific piece of equipment as i know several other people having a chevrolet trailblazer who have encountered this same problem. *tr

The cluster/instrument panel on many 2005 chevrolet trailblazer does not work, the gas gauge does not work, along with the speedometer, and the battery meter. the failure of these functions can cause speeding/ driving to slow, which could intern cause an accident. the gas gauge always shows that the tank is empty even after a fill up, which could cause you to run out of gas, and get into an accident. the only way to solve the problem is to replace the cluster panel. *tr

1.) nothing i can think of that i did caused the problem to start. 2.) the speedometer in my 2005 trailblazer simply does not tell the correct speed. nearly ever time i drive the tack will either stay at 0 or will go up to and beyond 120 mph. i have resorted to using my gps to tell my speed, but it is a large inconvenience to me and may others that i have found online. 3.) i have just begun to research the problem so i have not done anything to fix the issue. *tr

I bought a trailblazer 2005 the heater resister wire harness has melted wires, and the speedometer would stick after 20 miles of driving. had no idea how fast i was going and the melted wires are plain dangerous. i've read many many complaints online about these problems yet nothing has been done to correct them. i was doing over 100 mph before i realized the speedometer wasn't reading correctly it said 72 mph. i've read many people smell smoke when the wire harness melts. could easily start a fire .. both seem very dangerous to me and i cant believe they have not recalled them yet..are we waiting for someone to get killed first?? i've never filed a complaint like this before and i have no idea if it helps, but i needed to try something. thank you *tr

2005 chevy trailblazer gas guage does not work. it's on empty all the time, even when you fill up. while driving today on the freeway i set the crusie control and the speedometer goes haywire. it goes all the way over and stays stuck. i don't know how fast i'm driving or how much gas i have. dealership does not have recall. gas guage was fixed once while vehicle was under warranty. gas gauge will cost 600 to repair. i don't know about speedometer. as a consumer i feel cheated. after all i am the one payin the note each month. *tr

2005 chevrolet trailblazer speedometer quit working while making a 400 mile trip from arkansas to texas. the speedometer started reading 40 miles slower than my actual speed. eventually the gauge went below 0 mph while keeping up with traffic on a highway w/ a posted 70 mph speed limit. *tr

2005 chevy trailblazer speedometer cluster unit is a safety hazard. goes out of whack, never know how fast your going. teenagers are in danger. *tr

On or about november 12, 2010 the vehicle owner had the instrument panel replaced. shortly after replacing the instrument panel at a cost of approximately $550 the gas sensor stopped working. the owner complained to the chevy service department but was told that this was a separate issue and not caused by the replacement of the instrument panel. the owner checked for recalls on the internet but found more complaints for the same issue but no manufacture recall or data on either the instrument panel or gas senor/gauge. since the gas sensor/gauge/fuel level indicator does not work the vehicle owners have run out of gas at least 3 separate times. 1). a friday night at 10:00 p.m. on a dark winding road; 2). on a very busy 4-lane thorough fare both vehicle owners and a passenger ran out of gas at a stop light; 3). most recently was approximately 3-weeks ago. there's no way to know when the gas tank is full or running low on fuel because the "low gas" fuel light stays on most of the time or when the owners do fill-up the tank the gas gauge remains "e". the owners were quoted the cost of repair would be upwards of $500+.

On 2005 chevy trailblazer lt model, the speedometer doesn't work anymore. will read below how fast i'm actually going. will work off an on, so i always have to pay attention to how the needle is moving. taking it in for a repair soon. *tr

Just one day we got in the car to head to the grocery store and as we were heading there i looked down and the speedometer was at 20 when i was clearly doing 55. i pulled up to a stop light and shut the car off then restarted hoping it would fix itself and nothing. i has never worked right since then. i went to the local chevy dealer and asked to see if there were any recalls on this issue and they told me that there are recalls on every chevy suv and truck except trailblazer and told me to input a complaint to see if they would recall this issue. i asked them how to do that and they said to contact chevy. they were not helpful. the bull**** thing is that every chevy truck and suv from 2003 to 2007 use the same instrument panel so you can't tell me that this paticular vehicle is not like the tahoe, suberban, or silverado that has the same issue as i am having. i am pissed that i have to pay for a faulty part that chevy knows is an issue. *tt

On 11/6/2010 while driving down the highway, smoke began to appear beneath the steering column. pulled over and turned off vehicle, truck remained running and would not shut off, all lights interior and exterior lit up and would not shut off.... opened hood and began pulling fuses to shut vehicle off and disconnect power. had to cut battery cable and pull about 20 fuses to shut off. called for tow truck and after inspection by myself and numerous mechanics it was found that a bundle of approx 80 wires perpendicular to the steering column had melted and started on fire. total damage over $6600. vehicle is totaled and insurance company (geico) refuses to pay claiming it was a vehicle defect. i owe over 10k on vehicle, purchased used 02/20/2010 with 59k. total loss estimated at over 17k since finance company is no help trying to assist with repairs, i am letting them reposess it. *tr

My rpm gauges started messing up need my speedometer started next. they started sticking and jumping up. my 2005 trailblazer only has 47,000 miles on it and the check engine light stays on all the time. has been serviced regularly so i really don't know what it going on with it!

The gas gauge on my 2005 chevy trailblazer has stopped working. it gradually stopped registering the actual gas. after filling the gas, it register empty. as i drove, the gas would register as full. eventually it stopped moving at all. this has been going on for a period of 6mos. i started filling the gas more often. after filling the gas, 2 days later, the vehicle shut off in the middle of the highway, causing a near traffic accident because there was no warning. clearly, i wasn't out of gas. i had just fill the gas and became accustomed to how far i could drive before i needed to refill. this was very dangerous. it is obvious a defect in the gas gauge. i wasn't sure until now after visiting this site that i am not alone. the speedometer has also stopped working. i'm sure if it is registering the mileage i drive. not knowing how fast i am driving is surely a safety issue. i visited my mechanic is was given an estimate of $500 to repair. surely it shouldn't take a death to rectify this issue. *tr

The speedometer to my 2005 chevy trailblazer fell below zero and my actual rate of speed was incorrect. it was raining when it happened, but i noticed that i was passing people easily on the interstate at only going around 55 mph. i thought that people were overreacting to the rain afterall it was just a shower. but when i slowed down to an exit ramp i noticed that i was at zero mph while still rolling at i guess 30 mph. i must have been doing 85-90 mph before and i just felt ill that i was going so fast and could have easily been fined or worse hydro planed in the rainy conditions. i read up on this issue with alot of gm products and especially with the trail blazer models. my trail blazer has less than 65,000 miles and is well maintenance, so such a failure has nothing to do with any neglect. please investigate and makes sure that this common malfunction doesn't cost someone their health or lives. thanks *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving approximately 35 mph the speedometer began to move erratically. the speedometer reading fluctuated and displayed the incorrect speeds. the fuel gauge also did not display the accurate amount of gasoline in the fuel tank. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians stated the fuel level sensor and the instrument cluster needed to be replaced. there was an open investigation under nhtsa action number: dp10001 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump) which may be related to the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and agreed to cover the repair cost for the instrument cluster. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

Own a 2005 trailblazer while driving headlights turn off then come back on after awhile very unsafe, gauges don't always work. tachometer is just for show hasn't work for awhile now. 2. sometimes when i get in my t.b it won't start just won't crank over have to sit there holding the ignition forward til it cranks over my t.b only has 62,000 miles on it does someone need to die before something gets done so sad!!! *tr

Speedometer failure while driving 2005 chevrolet trailblazer lt on the highway. needle doesn't move at all. cannot determine speed of vehicle. brought to gm dealership. diagnosed as instrument cluster failure. similar cluster failures have occurred on other gm model suv's and trucks (tahoe, suburban, sierra) and have been handled as "recalls". gm has not acknowledged that the same failures which have occurred in chevrolet trailblazers are a safety defect worthy of a similar recall. *tr

Speedometer on my 2005 chevrolet trailblazer has malfunctioned and completely spun around and stuck at 120mph. this just spontaneously failed and my gas gauge is acting weird too. i have seen that this seems to be a common problem in this particular model and gm needs to issue recall and fix this!!! *tr

2005 chevy trailblazer-gas gauge stopped working accurately. stays around 1/4 tank while driving. low level indicator comes on when car is first started and then moves back up to 1/4 tank even though the tank may be full. two weeks after noticing the gas gauge i also noticed my speedometer was not reading accurately. noticed this when i was sitting at a stop light. while car was stopped speedometer said i was going 20 mph. after reading all the complaints regarding these same issues, i'm very disappointed that no one is doing anything about it. this is my first chevy and im sure it will be my last. if its relevant mileage is approximately 69,000. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving, the speedometer would indicate incorrect speeds. the contact called the dealer who stated that the failure was common. the contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 118,000.

The speedometer does not reset itself when the vehicle slows or stops. instead, it resumes from a higher speed. for example, if you are traveling at 45mph and stop at a stoplight the speedometer may drop to 40mph upon stopping. then when you resume traveling it starts from 40 instead of 0 so the speedometer shows you are traveling 60 when you are going 20, 70 when you are going 30 etc. when you stop again it will come to rest at an even higher speed, until eventually the needle shows over 120 mph when the vehicle is sitting still! i have done some investigation on line and this appears to be a fairly common complaint from fellow owners. general motors apparently dopes not consider this a safety issue and as such will not pay for the repair which is $500 or more. i'm not sure how not knowing you rate of travel is not a safety concern for them, but it certainly is to me. *tr

On way home from gm service garage where i found out i need a new dashboard cluster, the rpms gage started going haywire. well it stalled 3 times on my way home. i was on a small incline the first time and i applied brakes and it wouldn't stop needed to use emergency brake. this is a safety issue lucky nobody was behind me. *tr
