Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

My 2003 chevy trailblazer was found leaking gas round the top of the tank, the service tech said the module was rusted and will need replacing @$800. *tr

Fuel leak from the fuel pump module in my 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. i recently had the fuel tank replaced because of a vapor leak causing the check engine warning light to activate. when i picked up the vehicle i detected a strong gasoline smell and was just now told that the top of the fuel pump module was badly corroded with gas leaking through it. warranty will not cover the replacement as the module is still working. this is either a faulty design, or substandard materials are being used for this part as this vehicle is not all that old, and this condition is presenting a serious hazard with the gas and gas vapors leaking from the fuel tank. *tr

The fuel pump sending unit on my 2003 chevy trailblazer developed corrosion and leaked fuel from the unit. the cost of the repair was $592. *tr

I have a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer ls, 4x4 the gas tank leaks after filling completely. odor of gas coming from my vehicle. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving approximately 40 mph on normal road conditions, the check engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel and remained lit until the engine was turned off. in addition, the contact noticed a small amount of fuel leakage whenever the fuel tank was filled to capacity. the driver fills the fuel tank halfway in order to avoid leakage. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing and they stated that the failure was related to a hole in the fuel tank. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a second opinion and the same failure was confirmed. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 107,000.

Water has been seen several times dripping from underneath the truck in the center area. it appears to be from the emissions system. no wet weather at the time. it appears to be some sort of condensation. also fan clutch failure, sway bar linkages failure, tie-rod failure, rack and pinion failure/leak, control arm failures 2 times, windshield wiper would not turn off failure, windshield wiper reservoir tank leak replaced, ac cold air failure. all needed to be replaced on a vehicle less than 5 years old with only 38,000 miles on it. *tr

Gas tank leaking. i have two children (safety issue) i think there is something that gm needs to do about this problem.. obviously it is a problem. i guess we need to take further actions ourselves. *tr

Fuel spillage during refueling; during refueling the fuel will spill out from behind the top of the tank behind the wall. happened since vehicle has been owned. *cn

I have a 2003 chevy trailblazer. the gas tank is leaking. after researching this, it is a common problem with this make and model. it was a gm mess up, they should recall it and fix it.*cn

Fuel was leaking on the ground. *tr

Leak in the fuel tank. *tr

My check engine light came on. after linking to the computer i had a code # p0442. after i, and my mechanic inspected the vehicle, we found that the gas tank was cracked and leaking. i had to replace the faulty gas tank, for an expensive fee. i called chevy, and to sum it up, i was left to work this problem out on my own, with no financial help from gm. *tr

I got a strong smell of gasoline in my 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. i stopped at a garage and they looked at it and said the fuel line was either busted or corroded. they could not fix it right away, but said they didn't think the fuel line on a 2003 vehicle should be rusted. the gas was pouring out underneath the vehicle causing a fire hazard. i called the local chevrolet dealer and they could not fix it either, but they informed me that it would be rusted through that they are replacing a lot of them and also brake lines. i ask if there was a recall for this on the vehicle, and he said no it's just the ice melting materials they use on the roads around here. the gas tank has to be removed and the lines need replaced. the garage that is doing the work says that the fuel pump and filter should be replaced while the tank is down. i don't believe a four year old car should have fuel lines and brake lines rusting out like that. i think it is an engineering mistake on the materials these lines are made from. i am sure a lot of other people have spent large sums of money to repair this problem and if my complaint can get a recall started that would benefit all trailblazer owners. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevy blazer. the fuel tank was leaking. the check engine light is illuminated continuously. the dealer suggested that the entire fuel tank be replaced. the current and failure mileage were 48,000. updated 01-16-08. *kb updated *jb

2003 chevrolet trailblazer gas leak. *jb

On my first day from the lot purchasing a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer, gas runs from the fuel tank when i fill up. after seeing all the complaints with the same problem, why is there no recall for this? *tr

Strong gasoline smell in passenger compartment. smell is strongest underneath vehicle fuel tank. have not yet had vehicle serviced to determine root cause. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving approximately 30 mph, the contact smelled fuel inside the vehicle compartment. she exited the vehicle, cleaned the fuel tank, and discovered a leak. the vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer. the contact stated that the plastic neck leading into the fuel tank appeared to be cracked. the current and failure mileages were 29,855.

Service engine light came on. my private mechanic found it to be code p0440 indicating the fuel evaporation system had a problem. initial inspection found nothing but upon performing a smoke test of the fuel system, the fuel inlet nozzle on the fuel tank was found leaking. only fix was to replace the tank. total cost was $2200. i notified gm and was told they cannot do anything since the vehicle is out of warranty. fuel tanks should not be leaking, especially when they are only 4 years of age. many other similar complaints on this website show this to be a common problem with this vehicle. a recall to check all fuel tanks should be done before someone is killed over this poor design/quality issue. *tr

The smell of gas coming into vehicle, and leaking onto ground underneath. had fuel pump module (fuel sending unit) changed. *ak

I am being told that my 2003 chevy trailblazer has a cracked gas tank and has been leaking fuel. we have noticed a strong gasoline odor from the outside of the vehicle for a few weeks. apparently, chevy created a 'special policy' when this issue occurred for its 2002 trailblazers, but i am concerned that no attention is being given to the 2003 models. my dealership is replacing the gas tank which normally would have cost approx $1300, however, to get this deal, they are requiring me to pay for the 50k suggested maintenance on the vehicle at a cost of $475. there has been no injury or accident to myself as a result of this defect, but i feel that it is important enough to warrant investigation since this has also occurred in previous models. also, in previous models chevy paid for all of the repairs without requiring the owners to spend money on 'suggested maintenance'. the service bulletin number from chevy for the 2002 models is tsb 05012. *jb

Vehicle would emit a strong fuel odor upon being started. after idling for a short period of time small puddles of gasoline were present beneath the undercarriage of the vehicle dirctly below the fuel tank.*ak

I noticed a strong smell of gas when checking the air pressure in the tires. after looking under the suv i noticed the tank was dripping gas and was very wet. i was in a small town on a trip with no access to parts so a local shop had to remove the tank, take the sending unit apart, and repair the rusted and leaking sending unit in order to safely get me home.*ak

Have a 2003 chevy trail blazer and the gas tank is leaking from the top. i understand that there is a tsb # 05012 out on this issue. i had recently been at my dealer to get the check engine light checked. they said that i needed to replace the compressor right away. well that was over a year ago and it is still working just fine..that was not the problem. seems there are a lot of us out there who have this leaking gas tank problem. *tr

I have a 2003 chevy trailblazer. it has approximately 62,000 miles on it. the gas tank has a leak causing a ses code of p0442. this type of breakage has been reported before and is well documented. the manufacturer claims no responsibility for this failure. they claim it is due to the "age of the car". i cannot believe that it is acceptable for a gas tank to wear out in 3 and 1/2 years! i believe it is a manufacturing defect as it occurs in these types of vehicles frequently. i would ask nhsta to investigate this situation. thank you for your assistance. *nm

Had to have fuel sending unit replaced.the dealer stated the top was rusted, leaking fuel on the driveway.filed one complaint here already with no response now i saw in the paper there might be a recall.*ak

I purchased a used vehicle from upstate chevrolet in attica ny 14011 and the second month of ownership this vehicle was leaking gasoline. the fuel pump was leaking pushing gasoline out. vehicle was repaired for $670 all at my cost. checking with a parts store it was found to be a problem that is common of these vehicles. my vehicle is less than four years old. it is a 2003 chevy trailblazer and was repaired on 12/27/06. *nm

1) began to notice a strong smell of gasoline when traveling in auto. this smell became stronger when vehicle was parked. also had a "service engine soon" light on instrument cluster. when looking under car for leak of gasoline, smell was stronger near fuel tank. the smell was so strong that i was afraid to leave auto in garage at my home for fear of a fire. 2) auto was taken to a repair facility for "service engine soon" light and gas smell. they discovered a leak in the gas tank at the plastic weld of the nipple that connects to the filler tube. they stated that there seemed to be a failure at the weld or an incomplete weld from the manufacturer. the only solution for this problem would be the replacement of the fuel tank. 3) this repair was completed by the repair facility on 12/28/2006 i have access to this part for inspection. *jb

Chevrolet 2003 trailblazer: noticed a large puddle in driveway, which was gasoline. started suv up and the gas just poured out of the vehicle. i was afraid to drive it, but knew i had to do something. i drove it to the nearest repair station, wherein, after inspection it was found to be rotted supply and return lines on fuel pump module. the repair station removed the remaining fuel from the fuel tank; replaced fuel pump module; reinstalled fuel tank; reinstalled fuel. at a total cost of $778.14 used. i am a gm retiree after 33 years of service, and would like to be reimbursed for said amount of money. thank you for your consideration in this expensive matter. *ak

2003 trailblazer gas tank leak, crack in fuel neck, 60,000 mi.,service light came on and the dealer diagnosed it and said it would be $1200 to replace gas tank. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact claimed to smell gas. the check engine light illuminated a few days later. the vehicle was taken to dealer for service twice. during the second visit, a leak in the filler hose was diagnosed. the vehicle was repaired, but because the repair was not performed by a chevy dealer, the contact could not be reimbursed. the failure mileage was 45885.*ak the customer stated to chevy that he has the cracked filler hose and offered to take to a chevy dealer but preferred an independent testing company gm refused in both cases. update 04/19/07. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for inspection who determined the filler pipe neck at the top of the fuel storage tank assembly was leaking and needed replaced. the manufacturer was alerted. updated 10/25/2006 - the tank and inlet is a one piece unit. the inlet cracked around the molded flange where it attaches to the fuel tank. this is where the fuel leaked from. *nm

High pitch whirring sound emanating from the front underside of the vehicle. sound increased as acceleration increased. difficulty in steering became prominent. rack and pinion was leaking into the boot. gasoline tank located on the driver side rear, when full, leaked gasoline. *jb

2003 trailblazer fuel line and fuel pump rusted and began to leak fuel. *ts the fuel pump had to be replaced at a cost of 800.00 dollars. the filler neck was leaking at the fuel tank. the front pinion axle seal was leaking and the front stabilizer links were replaced. *jb

Fuel tank leaking gas, seal on fuel pump degraded same as 2002 trailblazer and gmc envoy recall, no issued recall on 2003 yet. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at any speed, fuel fumes were in the passenger compartment. the dealership replaced the charcoal filter, fuel tank, and solenoid. these attempts have not repaired the problem.

2003 trailblazer - reduced engine power light present when started. would accelerate to 15mph. rattle or grinding noise when braking or driving over bumps. drove to beaty chevrolet knoxville tn tues, 2/7/06. replaced throttle assembly & advised noise was from misaligned hood. trailblazer picked up on fri, 2/10/06. paid $200. ext warranty ded. gas empty stopped to fill up. while driving noticed fuel gauge past full mark, appeared to be pointing straight down. noticed tachometer registered 6500 rpms. called beaty chevrolet. service department closed. next day fuel gauge appears correct. after a week refueled and noticed fuel gauge was incorrect again. noticed strong gas odor when vehicle is started & vehicle smoking. called to schedule repairs on 2/28/06. was unable to make appointment rescheduled for tues 3/9/06. beaty informed that it must be guage sensor and not related to previous repair work so another $200. deductible would be due. they were unable to detect fuel odor nor smoking. i disagreed with the $200 charge due to vehicle being defective when i picked it up from the service department on the first visit. beaty chev. said they did not look at the tachometer nor fuel gauge when they service vehicles so they would not have known about the problem. lol .. i called gm warranty and they would not waive the $200 and said the dealership would be responsible. i contacted the dealership again and they thought gm would waived because of the numerous problems with the guage sensors. however they would not admit that they did not check the vehicle when it was being repaired the first visit. i have read numerous complaints regarding reduced power throttle assembly, guage malfunctions, and grinding noise when braking and feel that gm should recall and reimburse the consumer for the repairs they have paid. vehicle is still making grinding noise and now seems to lunge forward when brake is released. i need help and any advice you have to offer. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated after attempting to start the engine, a strong odor of gasoline was present. after smelling the gasoline, no further attempt was made to start the vehicle. the next day the contact managed to start the vehicle with the odor of gasoline present. the vehicle was driven to an independent repair shop who discovered the fuel pump was cracked and leaking gasoline. the repair shop suggested replacing the fuel pump. updated 01/25/06. *jb

3/4/05 2003 chevy trail blazer would not take fuel. the fuel would splash out of the fuel neck . the dealership replaced the gas tank and the sender. again, on 12/30/2005 the same problem occurred. the vechicle would not take fuel. while filling up the fuel on dispensed onto the ground. *nm

Dt: contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer . while driving on road engine check light came on . vehicle was taken to dealership 3 times to have the engine check light reset . mechanic told the contact that it was a crack in the gas tank that was causing engine check light to come on. consumer felt that she shouldn't have to pay for repairs . she felt that this was a safety issue.*ak

I have a 03 tb 2wd i have noticed recently that it is not changing gears properly. the service engine light came on and the problem appeared three more times. then the light went off and the problem went away. i took it to the dealer and they hooked it up to the "machine" and all they could find wrong was my o2 sensor. they said i needed to replace the gas sensor. this has nothing to do with the transmission.(this is what they said) they told me that they were not worried about it. i told them i was about to drive the car on a trip 1,000 miles one way. no problems they said. i called and questioned the dealership and he acted very surprised by this. says he hasn't seen a "problem" with the transmission. one of my co-workers daughter also has a trailblazer and hers has started to act up as well, and guess what it is the same thing as mine. i went on this web site and found out that this is a common problem with the tb. is there anything that can be done about this madness? http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ef15323/65. *nm

When filling up my gas tank, it regularly overflows before the automatic shut off a the pump. this problem has occurred at various gas stations, and from research, found that this is common problem. this is extremely dangerous as gas will often spill on my clothes, shoes and the side of the vehicle. not to mention the astronomical cost of gas these days! i can't afford this problem. how can it be fixed and if it's a common problem, why hasn't a recall been issued? *nm

Dt: contact states tank gas cracked in june and she had a new one put on. they did not notice anything wrong prior to this happening.. they noticed a gas leak, and that was when they replaced the gas tank. she bought new tires on 7-7-05 ,and now they driver's side wheel bearing failed. also, heard a roaring noise, and took the car to dealer on 7-20-05. she has not talked to the manufacturer yet. the car has 63,000 miles on it. vehicke is a 2003 gm trailblazer. *ak

I own a 2003 chevy trailblazer. i have been smelling gas fumes for the last couple of years and when i have taken to the local dealerships they stated that it was just "spillage and normal" for that type of car. my check engine light stays on and i have been told by autozone personnel that the "code" indicates some kind of emissions leak. when reviewing the open complaints, i noticed that there are many complaints very similar to what i have been experiencing. it is mostly when i fill up my gas tank over 1/2 a tank. i am afraid to fill it up full due to the heavy smell of gas. *tr

Fuel leak at the fuel tank neck where rubber hose running from fuel filler pipe is attached to fuel tank. (hose is secured to fuel tank by a hose clamp). the check engine light was on, dealer simply reset the light. the light was back two days later and there was a gas smell. i looked at the fuel tank and saw fuel was seeping at the fuel tank neck.

While driving vehicle leaked fuel from the fuel tank. dealership informed the consumer that there was a hole in the fuel tank. the problem had not been resolved. *ak

The gas intake pipe allows gas to spill out when fueling 2003 trailblazer.basically, the fuel pumps at all gas stations i use do not shut off when fueling and gas overflows onto the ground. the dealer has ordered a replacement part but no recall is out. this is a fire hazard and safety concern.*ak

I attempted to fuel the vehicle. every time i attempted, the pump would shut off as if an overflow were happening. this is not the first time. the dealer had advised me that it had fixed the problem when advised of it on a previous occasion. usually happens when the engine hasn't been running for very long.

Fuel spillage just after auto shutoff on gas pump on my 03 chevy trailblazer. this seems to happen almost everytime i fill the tank. i see and have heard this is a common problem and i believe this is potentially very dangerous. *jb

2003 chevy trailblazer ls- when filling up the gas tank with a full tank, gas spills out of the gas tank's fill pipe. this backwash happens everytime and occurs right after gas nozzle shuts off regardless of gas station that is used. it has been occurring ever since i bought the vehicle in july 03. i estimate 12+ occurrences. *la
