We have classified the 10 complaints from 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 about PARKING BRAKE into the following categories.
All this due to rusted out brake lines. on 3/9/10 i was approaching a stop sign in a 35mph zone. i put my foot on the brake pedal and the pedal went to the floor. i was able to give it a few pumps and i stopped in time. i immediately drove 4 blocks to auto shop. the mechanic found a ruptured brake line going to the back brakes due to rust. four days later i had to return my truck to the shop because my back brakes were sticking. i was informed that rust and corrosion had gotten into the back hoses and/or calipers and would not release properly. at that time he replaced the rear hoses and calipers. on 10/2/11 i had brake failure again. this time it was the front brakes. my mechanic informed me that it was a brake line coming off the abs unit in the front of the truck. there are five brake lines in that area and they were all rusted. he said he would have to replace all of them because they would eventually fail. at that time, the front brake calipers were so rusted that he could not bleed the brakes, and he suggested to replace the hoses and calipers and all five brake lines, which i did. he also told me there is a cross brace on the frame that was almost rusted thru and needed to be taken to a welder to be fixed. *kb
I have a 1999 chevy silverado. i have had to replace the brake lines due to a rupture as i was coming upon a 4 way intersection. thank god nothing was coming as i rolled through it. i made it home and to the shop the next day and had to replace all the brake lines. i have had to replace the parking brake pads on the rear which is a recalled item on a truck that has a manual shift transmission. what does the transmission have to do with brakes? shouldn't matter, just because there hasn't been an incident of a roll away with an automatic transmission. so why do they inspect the parking brake if you have an automatic transmission? because it is an emergency brake! with this truck you need it. you can find many complaints of the brake lines rusting out in the same year and make as my truck. there is an apparent problem with quality at gm and they should be held accountable. *tr

I have a 1999 chevrolet silverado and my abs light and parking brake light has came on recently. the braking on my truck is not very good in wet conditions. i found that it is a common problem on chevy trucks, and i was told that i should just remove the fuse. i was told it has something to do with the wheel hub assembly, and it is a costly fix. i think for once chevrolet should step up and put out a recall on this problem. there is also another common complaint about my dash cluster, which i had also found is a common problem, the odometer will go off and on when it feels like, and the gas gauge frequently goes up and down, and the fuel light comes on periodically. thank you for your time. *tr

Complaint about rear parking brake at service repair several times to dealership. i was told that is just the way it is... now at 84,438 miles after the extended warranty is over by less than one year and 9,000 miles, being told the rear parking brake pads are worn out and need to be replaced. cost was nearly $300. i was told they wear out as you drive around?? *jb
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle has been exhibiting gradual problems with the emergency parking brakes over the years since it was purchased. when the emergency brake pedal was depressed on normal road conditions, it would not hold. this brake failure did not result in any crashes or injuries. the brake lights did not illuminate before any of the brake failures. adjustments were made to the brakes by a service dealer mechanic back in february 2004. the dealer requested the contact to return the vehicle for additional repairs. the design of braking system is rear-wheel antilock. there have been 12 failures since last adjustments were made in march.

Have had a issue with the emergency brake of my 1999 chevrolet silverado auto transmission since it was new. took vehicle in under warranty to dealer for repair they only adjusted cable instead of changing pads. still did not solve problem, was told by dealer that lever going all the way to floor was normal as this brake was for parking not for emergencies and was not meant to stop vehicle only to gradually slow it down or hold on a incline.have since discovered that gm did a recall but only on models with manual transmissions the difference i still need a emergency brake too, should there be a recall for all models with that parking brake system. from what i have read and been told the pads were deployed and rubbed even without depressing emergency brake pedal and the pads wore out in no time as was my case. *tr
