From the first day i had this car, the brakes do not engage completely in the first few uses of the brakes, especially in wet conditions. i have had many near misses of accidents because of the brakes not engaging and sometimes not releasing-a thumping sound is heard when the brake cylinder piston releases. *tr
While driving after a recent episode of rain, i tried to come to a stop at a red light. i was driving down hill at approximately 20 mph when i stepped on the brake. as soon as i stepped on the brake, i began sliding at a diagonal to the direction of the street. i tried to compensate because i was approaching oncoming traffic and then began to slide the opposite direction, but still diagonal to the street on which i was traveling. i again tried to gain control of the car and almost turned perpendicular. i was finally able to gain control of my car, after going through a red light and almost sliding into head on traffic. all 4 of my tires must have been locked up to slide on a damp surface without regaining traction until an excessive amount of maneuvering was done. this incident could have resulted in death. i am in the process of finding out what i can do to have this problem investigated so that my life, or my son's life, is not put into danger again. *tr
When the weather is wet or snowy, and there is possible slick spots on the road, the abs is engaged even when you are pulling up slowly to the stop sign, or slowing down to arrive home, or even coming out of the driveway... what happens, is when doing those things in weather as described above, if you attempt to put the breaks on it makes an awful grinding sound and pushed back on you so you cant break... this has happened to me numerous times just backing out of my driveway... i pulled up to a stop sign behind someone this is right on my residential street so i was not speeding at all, it was a rainy day but the rain was light, i have brand new tires on my car too. as i pulled up behind my neighbors car to the stop sign, i was barely pushing down my break peddle when it pushed back at me and made t his deep sound i couldn't stop and i almost hit my neighbor. i went to my long time mechanic and he took it for a drive on a clear day.... he took it on some ...
Brakes have been replaced 4 times in last year. there have been continual failures with the rotors and calipers. when braking it appeared that the abs system that was designed to eliminate braking lock ups was engaging when it was not supposed to. brakes were wearing at an extremely high rate , which was warping the rotors which have been installed brand new. pulsating noise was common along with scraping and spongy brake pedal. in researching it appeared that the malibu had an extensive history of brake failures in a short time. several close calls due to brake failure. these cars need to be recalled and fixed before any further injuries or death occur. *ak
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 40 mph the abs light illuminated. the vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic who replaced the front passenger hub and speed sensor. the dealer was alerted. the vehicle is a malibu. *ak
When lightly applying pressure to brakes on freeway, traveling at approximately 60 mph, the tires completely locked up and the car pulled uncontrollably to the left, causing the car to fish tail and slide sideways down the freeway. vehicle suffered damage to the front end when colliding with the cement median. i will never feel safe getting into this vehicle and getting behind the wheel again. according to the chevrolet dealer there is "nothing wrong" with the vehicle and all systems are working "as designed". *jb
Dt*: the contact stated the abs warning light illuminated and the dealership replaced the driver side wheel speed sensor. six months later, the abs warning light illuminated again, the dealership determined the passenger side wheel speed sensor needs to be replaced. update 2/24/2006 - the consumer previous vehicle, a 2000 chevrolet malibu, also had the same brake wheel speed sensor failure. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated when brake pressure was applied at 15mph or less, the brakes made a loud grinding noise. the vehicle was seen by a local dealer. the dealer replaced the wheel speed sensor of the antilock brakes. the service department noted there was extensive rusting due to the corrosive road salts. there was a nhtsa recall #05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes. the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin.
