Problems with 2017 Chevrolet Malibu ENGINE

On average, the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 38 526 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2017 Chevrolet Malibu

When driving the vehicle, a warning will randomly appear saying 'reduced engine power' and will reduce speed to about 20mph and will not accelerate any faster.

When driving down a highway to drop off kid at school, the car sometimes slows down on its own and a message comes on stating engine power reduced. at 6:30 am in the morning when it's still dark, this is going to cause a car crash sooner or later. but dealer says there is no recall.

I bought my 2017 malibu in july of 2019 from a chevy dealership. since i've bought it my car has rapidly slowed down with now warning and my dashboard reading engine power reduced. it's happened 5 times since i got the car one being i was on the highway and almost got hit by a semi on my way to work in morning traffic. i looked up this issue to see what could be causing it and turns out other 2016-2018 malibu's have the same issues. i took it to autozone for a diagnosis and it's the throttle pedal position being farther apart than allowed. the dealership is charging me $200 to fix the issue and i have only had this car for 6 months.

While driving on freeway going 70 mph, my traction control, check engine light, and a warning flash across my dashboard saying engine speed reduced. my car went from going 70 mph to 40 mph and wouldn't go any higher. i immediately got off the freeway took pictures of the lights. luckily i have a anti left device that reads off codes for my check engine like code p2138 is what came up. this is extremely dangerous, i had my [xxx] child in the car with me and was almost rear ended due to loss of power from such a high speed. *dl parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The car will not start sometimes. yesterday the lights and radio came on randomly while sitting in the garage with the fob in the house. randomly shuts down while driving. the last time it was half way through an busy intersection. had to push the car off the road.

The car randomly will reduce engine power, lowering speeds to 20mph or less. this happens unexpectedly. this has occured over 20 times over the past 7 days, including on the highway. i was driving on the highway at 70mph and the immediately dropped to 20mph, causing me to swerve to the shoulder and almost was hit by three on coming vehicles at high rates of speed.

Engine power reduced warning came on with engine light and traction light car speed dropped

On november 27 ,my wife was driving the malibu at 55 mph on the highway when she experienced loss of engine power, down to 20 mph. . traffic backed up and came to screeching slow down. she ferried for her safety and pulled over in heavy traffic. she shut engine off and restarted vehicle to continue drive home at no more than 30 mph. contacted dealer and they could not get to it till following week. she did not drive it anymore. diagnosis at dealer was bad accelerator switch. they did not have any and said it maybe months because of this big problem. my car was down 15 days for this problem befor it was fixed.

Vehicle abruptly slowed in heavy traffic for no apparent reason. vehicle was diagnosed as having a faulty accelerator pedal. part was replaced at owners expense 14 months into the life of the car. 8 months later the vehicle started to do the same thing for the next 5 months, sometimes 3 to 4 times in one day or not al all for several weeks. car was again presented to dealer for diagnostic and it showed that the same fault occurred. this is a severe safety issue that needs to be addressed by general motors. fault codes p2138 for accelerator pedal, c0242 and u0401 for traction control system. neither of these faults were addressed by the dealer during the repair.

Engine light on continually and never went off; i drove to dealer who said the gas cap area of fuel line was leaking; needs to be replaced they said and tried to order it from gm but they do not have the part; they ordered the part and cannot tell me when it is coming. they could not advise me on the safety of this condition. i know someone who had a similar problem with their model car. can i drive this or should the dealer give me a loaner? i am still under the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty. we have always had problems filling the car and it is never completely full. we have brought it to dealer several times about this with no advise. they did recalibrate one time. they said it was an issue with the dash board reporting less gas than is in the tank. please let me know about this as we continue to drive the car.

Car will indicate 'engine power reduced' and will abruptly reduce speed. this is a major safety concern not only to myself but other drivers on the road as well. why is there no recall for this problem? i see it is a major problem with these models of chevy malibu. happens everyday, most of the time more than once. my commute to work is about 25min and it did it 3 times today.

While driving my car says "steering assist reduced. drive with care". it has started out of no where

I was traveling in my vehicle on the highway going at least 65 to 75 mph and all of a sudden my vehicle beats two or three times and across the screen came the words 'reduce engine speed'. at that moment i was traveling in the middle lane and i had to safely get over to the far right median in the middle of traffic safely turn off and wait at least 10 minutes to start it back up. when i started my vehicle back up again i still received the same message. i then waited even longer and everything was ok but eventually the same issue continued to happen several times. i took my vehicle to get coded and the codes that were given to me were 2122, 2123, 2101. it's unsafe for this to happen especially i have a child this is no safe for me.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chevrolet malibu. while the vehicle was at a stop light, it attempted to restart independently and the power steering assist warning indicator illuminated. the instrument panel started to blink and the vehicle stalled. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but it failed to restart. the contact called moritz chevrolet (9101 camp bowie, dr. west ste. # 1, fort worth, tx 76116, (817) 696-2000) and scheduled an appointment. the contact stated that the vehicle was in the process of being towed to the dealer. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 59,211.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chevrolet malibu. while driving 25 mph, the contact heard a noise coming from the engine and the vehicle began to stall. also, the check engine indicator illuminated. the contact drove to art moehn chevrolet honda (2200 seymour rd, jackson, mi 49201, 517-787-7700) where it was diagnosed that there was a defective camshaft that burst and spread metal fragments throughout the engine. the contact was informed that the entire engine needed to be replaced. the contact was given an estimate for the repair cost. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered the contact financial assistance towards the cost of a new engine. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 62,000.

On july 22, 2019 while out of town, my car went into reduced engine power mode, everything locked up and the car cut off. the car would not start back up. i had the car towed to the closest shop where it would sit for about a month and a half. i was told that initially it was a sensor, then come to find out the camshaft needed to be replaced. it took a few weeks to get the parts as they said they were on back order. finally i get the money to pick the car up. upon getting into the car on october 12, while still at the dealership the engine light came on. now i am told that the sensors and pistons need to be replaced. the car has 89,000 miles on it and over all the total repairs will be over seven thousand dollars. i have sent some documentation to the dealership with regards to customer satisfaction program number n182195660 attached below. this describes everything that has been wrong with my car this time in the shop and the repairs that they need do with the pistons as of now. i have reached out to gm to open a case to see if my car could be part of this notification, though they have initially told me its not, its too obvious that the car meets everything that is described in the notice.

Car shuts off completely while driving-the car goes dead de-energized completely. all controls would not work just locked up on me. i had to have the unit towed twice, we switched the battery in the key fob and the car ended up starting, however 2 weeks later it died again while driving, i nearly had an accident again!! 3 times the car has been in motion going straight and completely shuts down. the dealership was not able to find anything with their diagnostic testing!! this has to be some sort of mal-function or recall regarding this issue.

Warning message says 'shift into park' & even though engine shuts off, the radio (& i'm assuming battery) doesn't. car won't lock because of it. has required turning car back on & off as many as 8 times, and/or moving forward or backwards numerous times. chevy dealer's service advisor told me "yeah, we've had lots of problems with that. we usually have to replace the shifter control box".

On saturday, june 29th, 2019 approximately at 12:30 pm my family's 2017 chevrolet malibu was in motion in a major interstate (i-75) and the traffic started slowing down, i pressed the brake pedal to slow down and the pedal became very hard to brake and having to swerve to the side of the right side of the road to avoid a collision with the vehicle in front of me. the vehicle's message board read "engine power reduced". i also received an email message from on-star stating that an issue with the engine and transmission system was detected. the vehicle was taken to victory lane chevrolet in fort myers, florida, and the service technician told us that the issue had nothing to do with the engine or transmission as the vehicle message stated, but a problem with the braking system's vacuum. this could have been a really bad accident and hope that this information can help avoid any problems to anybody. we are still worry about driving this vehicle, since we are becoming aware that this is an issue that seems to be repeating itself to many other owners of the same vehicle and model as our malibu in the united states and canada.

I purchased a 2017 chevrolet malibu about a year ago. i had a check engine light come on at about 25k miles while driving on the highway. the warning on my dash said "engine power reduced". i was on a 90 mile trip and continued on, as i had nothing i could do then and there. i arrived and turned the car off, fully expecting issues the next day when i left, the check engine light was off. i assumed it was just a computer glitch or issue, until now at about 35k miles, on the same trip, the check engine light came on with the same "engine power reduced" warning came on. i have read many complaints online with this same exact issue, and it never seems to be resolved. both times i had been on the highway for about 15-20 miles and completed the trips.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the accelerator pedal malfunctioned and was repaired twice. in addition, the vehicle stalled and the transmission was repaired three times. biggers chevrolet (1385 e chicago st, elgin, il 60120, (847) 742-9000) made the repairs under warranty. the accelerator pedal failure recurred and the vehicle was currently back at the dealer. the manufacturer was contacted and provided a case number [xxx]. the contact was informed that a senior adviser from the manufacturer would call back within two days. the failure mileage was 50,522.*bf *tr *tr *as consumer stated the engine light has been fixed multiple times and transmission. the accelerator has been replaced 4 times as well. door panels came off, carpet came up, trim by rear shaft came up. the car was surrendered to jerry biggers. history listing reference #xxxxxxxxx 'parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*jb

Intermittent issue while driving at highway speeds (70mph) car will pop up service stabilitrak error message on front display, the traction control light will illuminate, while cel begins flashing. at this time, car will lose power and speed will begin to fall. continuing to depress accelerator in an attempt to maintain speed will cause car to shudder. entire incident lasts only 1-2 minutes, before drivability returns. in-the-moment onstar diagnostics show no issues. purchased car brand new; only been serviced at the original dealership, only use shell v-power gasoline. 1st incident- dealer said wet roads/rain to blame; did not run diagnostics, did not attempt to service 2nd incident- dealer noted cylinder 3 misfire, swapped coil pack and spark plugs on cylinders 1 and 3, changed oil. 3rd incident- on my way home from dealership following above service, dealer noted cylinder 3 misfire, opened a case with gm, and performed decarbon service to engine, said carbon build-up to blame. 4th incident- dealer noted general engine misfire code, along with several communications errors codes; replaced ecm and reprogrammed car. dealership told me using non-top tier gas is to blame. car has total of 27k miles on it- issue began to occur around 15k miles. i have dashcam video and all service records.

While driving it will unexpectedly pops up a message saying power engine reduced. this is very dangerous and could get you into an accident. less than a year after i purchased this new vehicle it happened then again not even one year after they have supposedly fixed it

Driving on a major highway with a customer and the engine light comes on, power is reduced to a crawl, and then "power reduce" light comes on. at that point no acceleration occurs and car cuts off ( i was able to glide to the side) and will not start back up. after an hour,( and me having to call another car to pick up my customer) car cuts back on. take it to dealership, was advised that a bulletin was issued regarding this problem 18 months ago, 1 month before i purchased car. said i needed my cylinders replaced (the engine) but once i took it in, they replaced the fuel injections (23,000 miles). 60 days later, the same exact issue has occurred, again on a major highway, this time i had just dropped off a passenger. waited 30 minutes, and was able to drive home. since it was the holiday weekend, i was not able to get into the dealership for immediate repairs again. called today 7/8/19 to speak to my advisor, he has not called me back. i will have to have the car towed in or drive on the back roads at a crawl.

Engine power is reduced, i was on the interstate traveling 65 mph and the engine power is reduced error appeared on my dash and the car lost engine power and almost got into a crash.

I was driving on an expressway when the check engine light came on and the following message: "reduced engine power." the engine power was cut to approximately 30 mph which was extremely dangerous on an expressway and i did not know what was happening. i was barely able to exit the highway without incident and took the vehicle to a chevy dealership. i was told to cut the engine and open/close the driver's side door before restarting the vehicle. this allowed the vehicle to regain engine power but the check engine light remained on. according to this dealership and the dealership that ultimately fixed the car, this is a common problem with the chevy malibu that needs to be recalled. a brief internet search confirms this is an ongoing problem with the malibu that gm has yet to appropriately fix. although my vehicle was fixed, it is a temporary solution at best. furthermore, other drivers have reported scary incidents when they were driving on an expressway and suddenly lost engine power. this is unacceptable and could lead to serious injury. my vehicle has 25,865 miles and i do not wish to keep paying to fix this problem once my vehicle is out of warranty.

2017 malibu lost power while on the freeway on 4/10/2019! dropped from 65 down to 45 while in the 3rd lane. this has to do with some electrical connection around the drive pedal! there are many complaints of ppl losing power while on the freeway. just google it! this is a known issue that is going to get someone killed! as a former qe in the auto industry, this would have already resulted in recall efforts because of the safety risk! so nhtsa, i hope you take this complaint very seriously and not wait for someone to die or get seriously hurt! such as the takata airbag, firestone tires which almost killed a family member!

I bought a 2017 chevy malibu in june or july of 17. not even a year later on 11-10-17, my check engine light came on and i had an oxygen sensor shorting. they fixed that. then on 2-2-18 i was driving 40mph and lucky i wasn't on the freeway because my car instantly slowed down and would not allow be to go over 15 mph. they said it was something wrong with the accelerator pedal. however, onstar sent me message stating my engine and transmission needs to be checked. so they ended up replacing the pedal and "fixing" the problem. i got my car back on 2-5-18. in the same month on 2- 9-1818, i went to go pickup my dad who is an experience semi-truck driver and he was 2 hours away. on the way there my car kept fishtailing and i thought maybe i am just over exaggerating and maybe it just me. but, when i got to my dads destination i asked him to drive back and he did. he asked me what wrong with your car? it feels like one side of the car is pulling faster than the other. he then said we need to take this to get serviced immediately because this is an accident waiting to happen. however, this was the weekend so i had to wait until monday. 2-12-18 i brought it in to be serviced however my car was back to acting normal. on 2- 22-18 . my car kept calling onstar emergency and kept explaining to them it was my car. they told me to pull over, turn my car off and they would try to send to signal to my car. the lady said she did could not get any signal from my car and i should take it to be serviced immediately. the onstar voice kept running i could not turn it off or down. once again this was a weekend. i had to wait until monday. they fixed that problem. now again on the april 1, 2019 i took it to be serviced again due to my car not allowing me to go over 20mph. my car is unsafe i was on the freeway when it slowed down lucky i was in the first line and was about to get off safely.

While driving vehicle on highway at a speed of 80 mph, this message appeared which said engine power reduced speed. i had to find my way to the right side of the highway, while other vehicles are traveling at a 75+ mph, and my vehicle speed has reduced down to 30 mph in a matter of seconds . i pulled over to the emergency lane on the expressway and shut down my vehicle. after 15 min, i started my vehicle and the check engine light was on, but i was able to drive at a normal speed again. this is a hazardous issue and need attention immediately.

I purchased the 2017 malibu in 2017 and currently have about 24000 miles on it. in the past three months (since december 2018) my check engine light has turned on and been serviced for the code p2097: post catalyst fuel trim system high limit. i was told after the first visit to the dealership that it was a software problem that needed updating. however, it should not be turning on every few hundred miles. the light turns on after highway travel. my specific malibu also needed the hydraulic valve lash adjusters replaced due to the exhaust valves not sealing, this was supposedly corrected in december as well.

I purchased a 2017 chevy malibu in april 2017 with 11 miles. in less than a month, the car started having issues. took the vehicle into the dealership for inspection with the initial problem being the o2 sensor they updated the software and it was noted gm would monitor the concern and has been an ongoing issue since. the problems are as follows: dashboard goes blank while driving, codes: p0036, p0037, p0138, p0141, p2097 x3; p2122, p2127, p2138, accelerator pedal replaced x3 within a two month time frame with throttle harness being replaced on the third time, reduced engine power to 20 mph while driving, scanning noise coming from engine while vehicle is both in the on/off position; still have no explanation of the problem. the sound will sometimes occur before reduced engine power. while the car was under warranty, the issues were not addressed and were no longer gm's concern after the warranty expired. i filed a bbb claim to help resolve the ongoing problems with the vehicle. the bbb awarded the decision that gm is to repair any issues with the throttle, accelerator pedal, and emissions with four attempts to do so.

I purchased the car with 11miles on it and i am still having these issues with loss of power steering resulting in almost near death crashes. the car stalls while in motion. this has happened both in traffic and on the highways. ive had to pull over on the highway. the emissions in the car is always a problem and the engine constantly sounds like it falling out as you switch gears. i have reached out to gm to complain, however they have not been helpful nor are they experts in fixing transmission/ emissions issues. at this point i no longer have faith in this 2017 malibu and i feel like gm is taking absolutely no responsibility in the errors of the mechanics of this car. so far, i was told after 1 year of trying to fix the issue and hundreds of dollars spent on rental cars because this issue is not deemed a warranty issue, they gave me $1500 to purchase another gm vehicle, never addressing the issue of the safety concerns i have with the car. that is not fix i am willing to settle for. what about the monthly obligation i have in terms of paying off this car? none of the technicians were able to explain to me why this is and i have spent countless dollars in an effort to have this car looked at. the reason for my recent complaint is because again the car is experiencing stalling and low power steering. the original fix from chevrolet was to change something in the battery "found code coboo b1325 low voltage codes. found shorted cell in battery casuing low voltage at startup replaced battery and road tested 6 miles. no code returned " however they have changes that cell everytime i take it in for service. this does not fix the issue, instead causes me more money because this is not a warranty issue and i am always having to leave my car for weeks. i am looking for a remedy that is safe for both me and my children. i have repair orders if needed

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chevrolet malibu. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle decelerated in the middle of traffic and almost crashed into another vehicle. the check engine and traction control warning indicators illuminated and "engine power reduced" appeared on the instrument panel. the vehicle was towed to reedman toll chevrolet (1700 lincoln hwy #101, langhorne, pa 19047) where it was currently being diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 48,000.

I started having issues with my 2017 chevy malibu a little over a month ago. i was driving in the city and the engine light came on and a warning for engine power reduced came on. car would not go over 30 miles and hour. it didn't happen again until 2 days ago its happed for both days on day it came on as i was entering the freeway. had to pull over and turn my car on and off untill i could drive it again normally but the engine light would turn on and off. i'm very disappointed this is happening to my new car. the reason i got a new car was to have something reliable. i cant even trust to drive this car what if it happens and i have my baby in the car... i'm so disappointed.

At least twice a day, while driving, i'll randomly get a message on my message board stating 'engine power reduced' and then my car will slow down. i'm unable to speed up, my engine light comes on and i have to find a safe spot to pull over, shut the car off and wait about 10-15 minutes before i can restart it. once i restart it i can drive but my engine light remains on. i've taken it back to the dealership i got it from but they are telling me nothing is wrong and that it's just a sensor.

The vehicle displays/flashes quickly, stabili track system error (maybe not the exact words) and after a while the engine speed decreases. this has happened to me 3 times and two happened to be when i was driving on the highway going 70mph and the vehicle speed suddenly decreases to 30mph due with any warning.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the vehicle decelerated and powered down without warning in traffic. the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to autonation (500 washington boulevard, laurel, md 20707, (866) 525-2985), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 40,000.

Vehicle went into 'engine power decreased' unable to accelerate with the check engine light on as well as throttle sensor on. took to dealer who checked all of the diagnostic codes and said it was fully operational. again drove for about 1 month and same thing happened. took it back in and chevrolet dealer said it was the accelerator pedal sensor. we replaced the sensor being a $200 part last week and again the check engine light came on. when this happened we were on the highway in a snow storm and had our baby in the vehicle. it locked up and cars couldn't slow down appropriately. we left the highway for safety reasons and kept vehicle on as it was below 0 degrees outside!

For 2 years now i can be driving and i get a warning that the engine has been reduced only allowing the vehicle to go 25 mph. i was on the highway (81) and almost lost my life when the truck behind me almost didn't stop in time. i have been to the dealer and understand the part i need is back ordered with no indication as to when the part will come in and i cant get a replacement vehicle. i use my vehicle for work and cant be without transportation. onstar emails me every time stating there is a problem with the engine/transmission.

My malibu, purchased new in 2017, has 28170 miles on it. while driving on the highway i suddenly received a message saying that "engine power is reduced". instantly my car stopped accelerating no matter how hard i pressed the gas, and rapidly decelerated. again, on the highway. i had to coast to the shoulder and wait for a tow truck to take it to the dealership. this is a terrifying problem that seems to have happened to many others. what ever the issue is that is causing this should be resolved and a recall in place.

When driving the engine lose power and the traction light and check engine light comes on. the car tell you that the engine is losing power. this keeps happening. i also have been into the dealership several times due to the check engine light keeps coming on.

This vehicle has started up and stop on it's on while driving sitting at a red light also the pedal is getting air through it and the reduce engine light continues to come on

Engine power reduces sporadically while driving on highway and regular city streets. initially issue happened once a week. now it's happening and average of 3 times per day. when engine power reduces car will not accelerate more than 30mph which is dangerous on a highway. the more i use the car, the more frequent the issue is happening. i was informed by hessert chevrolet that it is a censor in my gas petal and the gas petal needs to be replaced. the gas petal has been on "national" back order since the beginning of january 2019

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the check engine and engine reduced indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to steve rayman chevrolet (678-269-7886, located at 2155 cobb pkwy se, smyrna, ga 30080) where the technician performed a diagnostic test and replaced the throttle control cables; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

Bought vehicle new 12-5-17 and on 12-6-17 engine light while in motion on highway came on i was advice by service member at dealership that it was an emissions problem and it would fix itself. engine light went away and then 10-11-18 in while in motion on street engine light came on and car decelerated in speed giving message engine power is reduced. was going to take to dealership that following monday but the engine light went away again before that time. today 11-22-18 engine light back on,while in motion on street speed reduced, same message saying engine powered reduced. those times that the engine light came on speed would not go over 30 miles per hour

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chevrolet malibu. during cold weather, the charge air cooler became frozen. the vehicle was taken to pucklich chevrolet (3701 state st, bismark, nd 58503) on several occasions where they replaced the charge air cooler, and heated and drained the replacement air cooler twice. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 19,796.

Was driving with car in drive and car check engine light came on with traction signal stating 'reduced speeds'. had to pull over and car would not go past 20 mph. cut car on and off 3 times before the reduced speed signal went off. was driving on the highway and it happened again and i immediately had to get off the highway because my kids were in the car.

Takata recall: just purchased a used 2017 malibu premier in july 2018 with 26,000 miles on it and it is hesitating to start every morning. each initial start there after the car starts right up after i've put 3000 miles on the car the engine jumps while holding break.

Gear shifter gave out while driving. almost got rear ended. car shifted itself into neutral even though i shifted gears into park once i got to a safe place computer screen read neutral. car would not turn off from accessory mode and said "shift to park" but it would not. then when i tried to shift it jumped hard and you could see the engine jump as if it wasn't mounted properly. was able to get to a safe place but had to have it towed to dealer. dealer called today to say it was gear shifter. went bad but the battery had drained too and they refused to replace battery. the shifter problem is dangerous . i only had 11989 miles on it and it is 1 year old.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chevrolet malibu. while driving various speeds, the vehicle lost power and stalled. also, the check engine indicator illuminated and "engine power reduced" appeared on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken twice to burkins chevrolet (273 e macclenny ave, macclenny, fl 32063, (866) 551-5325) where it was diagnosed that the throttle cable needed to be blown out and the system needed to be updated. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. the failure mileage was 75,656.
