We have classified the 41 complaints from 2017 Chevrolet Malibu about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
I was driving straight at 47mph on a major street in denver and the check engine light came on. at the same time, the display read "engine power is reduced" and i lost all acceleration. my speed dropped to about 20mph very quickly (5 to 8 seconds). luckily there was relatively light traffic. i pulled into an autozone that was at the next intersection and they read the error code p2138. come to find out this shows an error with the throttle/pedal position censor. i got back in my car to drive home and within 30 seconds, the check engine light went off and my car ran like normal. i'm still very worried about this sensor however. when i looked this up online tonight, i came to find out this is a common problem yet chevy has decided not to recall this part. doing more research lead me to the class action lawsuit which has been by rothschild v. general motors llc, case no. 1:19-cv-05240, in the u.s. district court for the eastern district of new york. from what i read, and knowing that i drive 35,000 miles per year for work, i believe this could be a huge if this were to happen when i'm doing 75+mph on the interstate. i urge the nhtsa to review this very dangerous situation carefully and strongly recommend you have chevy do the right thing and get this part fixed and replaced to keep us drivers safe!!
I was driving 35mph on city street going straight on the road and all of a sudden my car slowed down to 10mph. a pop up saying car engine power reduced came up on the dash bored along with my engine light
When driving down a highway to drop off kid at school, the car sometimes slows down on its own and a message comes on stating engine power reduced. at 6:30 am in the morning when it's still dark, this is going to cause a car crash sooner or later. but dealer says there is no recall.
While driving on freeway going 70 mph, my traction control, check engine light, and a warning flash across my dashboard saying engine speed reduced. my car went from going 70 mph to 40 mph and wouldn't go any higher. i immediately got off the freeway took pictures of the lights. luckily i have a anti left device that reads off codes for my check engine like code p2138 is what came up. this is extremely dangerous, i had my [xxx] child in the car with me and was almost rear ended due to loss of power from such a high speed. *dl parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The car randomly will reduce engine power, lowering speeds to 20mph or less. this happens unexpectedly. this has occured over 20 times over the past 7 days, including on the highway. i was driving on the highway at 70mph and the immediately dropped to 20mph, causing me to swerve to the shoulder and almost was hit by three on coming vehicles at high rates of speed.
My car will randomly go into engine reduced power mode causing my car to drop from whatever speed i'm at to 30-40mph, almost causing an accident. it's happened on multiple occasions.
Engine power reduced warning came on with engine light and traction light car speed dropped
My vehicle has 6x,xxx miles on it. i first encountered a "reduced engine power" message on november 27, 2019 after driving 15 miles, turning the car off for about 30 minutes, and starting the car again. i called on-star to receive a diagnostic report, which returned a p2138 code. i limped the car home on a rural route with reduced power. once home, the car was turned off for about 5 minutes. when i turned the car on, there was a check engine light but it ran fine. the light eventually turned off. the car ran fine until the evening of monday, december 2, 2019. this time the reduced engine power condition occurred as i was in traffic commuting home from work, moving at a low speed. luckily the road wasn't busy and i was able to pull into a gas station. i powered the car off and back on, and it ran fine all the way home. based on some research on the internet, i believe the accelerator pedal position sensor is failing. this appears to be a widespread issue with these vehicles. i will be replacing the part on my own. the replacement part was very hard to find, supporting my suspicion that this is a widespread and likely an issue that gm is aware of.
At less than 32k miles i"ve had issue with the shift to park indicator, the radio random on and off regardless if car is running or parked and off and now multiple indicators for an emission issue car will suddenly loose power or stop. i have taken care for service on regular basis and have had service repairs done twice to supposedly fix computer board. unfortunately, service either says they have rest it or can't find issues i describe. i will park the car and let gm have it before i get killed in traffic!!!!
Vehicle abruptly slowed in heavy traffic for no apparent reason. vehicle was diagnosed as having a faulty accelerator pedal. part was replaced at owners expense 14 months into the life of the car. 8 months later the vehicle started to do the same thing for the next 5 months, sometimes 3 to 4 times in one day or not al all for several weeks. car was again presented to dealer for diagnostic and it showed that the same fault occurred. this is a severe safety issue that needs to be addressed by general motors. fault codes p2138 for accelerator pedal, c0242 and u0401 for traction control system. neither of these faults were addressed by the dealer during the repair.
While driving on a city street approaching a roundabout the engine warning light came on, the car reduced it's engine power, and the traction control sensor came on
Car will indicate 'engine power reduced' and will abruptly reduce speed. this is a major safety concern not only to myself but other drivers on the road as well. why is there no recall for this problem? i see it is a major problem with these models of chevy malibu. happens everyday, most of the time more than once. my commute to work is about 25min and it did it 3 times today.
Car indicating to place in park after placing the shifter into park and shutting down the car this happens weekly at least i was coming to a stop at a light and the car just completely shut off no power dash flashed a few times i put it in park, then i pushed the button to start it didnt start. im stuck at stoplight on busy street during morning traffic. second time this has happened
I was traveling in my vehicle on the highway going at least 65 to 75 mph and all of a sudden my vehicle beats two or three times and across the screen came the words 'reduce engine speed'. at that moment i was traveling in the middle lane and i had to safely get over to the far right median in the middle of traffic safely turn off and wait at least 10 minutes to start it back up. when i started my vehicle back up again i still received the same message. i then waited even longer and everything was ok but eventually the same issue continued to happen several times. i took my vehicle to get coded and the codes that were given to me were 2122, 2123, 2101. it's unsafe for this to happen especially i have a child this is no safe for me.
I bought a 2017 chevy malibu in june or july of 17. not even a year later on 11-10-17, my check engine light came on and i had an oxygen sensor shorting. they fixed that. then on 2-2-18 i was driving 40mph and lucky i wasn't on the freeway because my car instantly slowed down and would not allow be to go over 15 mph. they said it was something wrong with the accelerator pedal. however, onstar sent me message stating my engine and transmission needs to be checked. so they ended up replacing the pedal and "fixing" the problem. i got my car back on 2-5-18. in the same month on 2- 9-1818, i went to go pickup my dad who is an experience semi-truck driver and he was 2 hours away. on the way there my car kept fishtailing and i thought maybe i am just over exaggerating and maybe it just me. but, when i got to my dads destination i asked him to drive back and he did. he asked me what wrong with your car? it feels like one side of the car is pulling faster than the other. he then said we need to take this to get serviced immediately because this is an accident waiting to happen. however, this was the weekend so i had to wait until monday. 2-12-18 i brought it in to be serviced however my car was back to acting normal. on 2- 22-18 . my car kept calling onstar emergency and kept explaining to them it was my car. they told me to pull over, turn my car off and they would try to send to signal to my car. the lady said she did could not get any signal from my car and i should take it to be serviced immediately. the onstar voice kept running i could not turn it off or down. once again this was a weekend. i had to wait until monday. they fixed that problem. now again on the april 1, 2019 i took it to be serviced again due to my car not allowing me to go over 20mph. my car is unsafe i was on the freeway when it slowed down lucky i was in the first line and was about to get off safely.
While driving vehicle on highway at a speed of 80 mph, this message appeared which said engine power reduced speed. i had to find my way to the right side of the highway, while other vehicles are traveling at a 75+ mph, and my vehicle speed has reduced down to 30 mph in a matter of seconds . i pulled over to the emergency lane on the expressway and shut down my vehicle. after 15 min, i started my vehicle and the check engine light was on, but i was able to drive at a normal speed again. this is a hazardous issue and need attention immediately.
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chevrolet malibu. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle decelerated to 10 mph, lost power, and the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to daniels long chevrolet (70 automotive dr, colorado springs, co 80905, (719) 387-1072) where it was diagnosed that the throttle pedal malfunctioned. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred twice. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 95124179466. no further assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 33,236.
I started having issues with my 2017 chevy malibu a little over a month ago. i was driving in the city and the engine light came on and a warning for engine power reduced came on. car would not go over 30 miles and hour. it didn't happen again until 2 days ago its happed for both days on day it came on as i was entering the freeway. had to pull over and turn my car on and off untill i could drive it again normally but the engine light would turn on and off. i'm very disappointed this is happening to my new car. the reason i got a new car was to have something reliable. i cant even trust to drive this car what if it happens and i have my baby in the car... i'm so disappointed.
At least twice a day, while driving, i'll randomly get a message on my message board stating 'engine power reduced' and then my car will slow down. i'm unable to speed up, my engine light comes on and i have to find a safe spot to pull over, shut the car off and wait about 10-15 minutes before i can restart it. once i restart it i can drive but my engine light remains on. i've taken it back to the dealership i got it from but they are telling me nothing is wrong and that it's just a sensor.
So i bought my car back in 2017 my car is almost 1 1/2 years old sence me and my husband bought it. so my husband was taking our kids to school when the engine light came on and said reduce speed and our car slowed down and can't go pass 25 i called the gateway chevrolet in avondale arizona. they looked at the car and said the parts where on back order and my car didn't fall under warranty i am so up set every sence i have had this car i have had one issue after another i do not know what to do i am paying for a almost bran new car that has spent most of the time haveing issues
As i was driving down the highway last night, (02-26-2019) my vehicle detected an issue that triggered my check engine light. it also flashed a message that stated, "engine reduced power" and it would no longer accelerate at that point. i tried pressing the accelerator multiple times however, my vehicle continued to slow down. i had to stop on the side of the busy highway to turn my car off and back on again in order to get it to move again. my check engine light has remained on since then. i purchased this vehicle brand new less than 2 years ago from the clay cooley chevrolet dealer in dallas texas. when i called them this morning i was told by a service technician that multiple customers have brought their cars in for the same issue. i was informed that it is an accelerator issue and not covered under my power train warranty. seeing that this is an on going issue with this exact make and model vehicle, it needs to be recalled and taken off of the market until the problem is resolved.
While driving in the high way warning engine light came on with engine reduced power and my gas pedal stopped responding and my speed was reduced dramatically while driving almost caused me to crash. i took my car to mechanic shop and it has been there for over 2 weeks because the part is on back order with no status. the dealer told me that it is no longer covered over 36,000. my car has 37,000 on it.
Vehicle went into 'engine power decreased' unable to accelerate with the check engine light on as well as throttle sensor on. took to dealer who checked all of the diagnostic codes and said it was fully operational. again drove for about 1 month and same thing happened. took it back in and chevrolet dealer said it was the accelerator pedal sensor. we replaced the sensor being a $200 part last week and again the check engine light came on. when this happened we were on the highway in a snow storm and had our baby in the vehicle. it locked up and cars couldn't slow down appropriately. we left the highway for safety reasons and kept vehicle on as it was below 0 degrees outside!
Discovered code p2138 active, and engine send into "reduced power" mode while driving on highway (approximately 70 mph), occurred over several days. took car to dealership, and discovered throttle position sensor to be faulty, cursory research on internet provided multiple examples of issue among other owners.
My malibu, purchased new in 2017, has 28170 miles on it. while driving on the highway i suddenly received a message saying that "engine power is reduced". instantly my car stopped accelerating no matter how hard i pressed the gas, and rapidly decelerated. again, on the highway. i had to coast to the shoulder and wait for a tow truck to take it to the dealership. this is a terrifying problem that seems to have happened to many others. what ever the issue is that is causing this should be resolved and a recall in place.
Driving the vehicle on the road or interstate and it loses power and wont let you drive over 30 mph. the vehicle also would not start. had to let the car sit for 15 seconds then try to start it again for it to start. then it would cut off while stopped at a traffic light. gives a message saying engine power reducing

Back in the 1st week of january 2019 i experienced the first major issue. while i was driving to work on the highway traveling at 65 mph the cars check engine light went on as well as the traction control. the vehicle immediately sent a message on my dashboard that said "reduce engine power" and the car jerked and the speed drastically dropped from 65mph to about 20mph. i was unable to accelerate and was luckily able to drive to an emergency lane while cars and semi trucks were behind me and almost hit me. i turned the car off and then back on again and the engine light remained on, but i was able to safely get to a chevy dealership. the dealership ran diagnostics on it and they determined it was a faulty gas throttle pedal and sensor. the vehicle was in the shop for a total of two weeks, due to them being out on the parts. i paid over 500 dollars for the repair. less than a week later i was merging on to a highway to go to work again. as i was merging on the engine light went on and the message saying "reduced engine power" came on again. i lost the ability to accelerated and pulled over. i then turned my car on and off again. the engine light remained lit and the "reduce engine power" message remained on this time. i was able to accelerate to a max of 35 mph this time. i returned the vehicle to the same chevy dealership. they ran diagnostics on it and this time they stated it could have been due to the cold weather and said a oil change might help. the oil was changed on the vehicle and then the called saying the vehicle was running very rough when they started it. they also then stated that there was condensation in the radiator from the coolant. they are still waiting for parts and the vehicle has been there almost three weeks. total time in the shop was 5 weeks out of 6 weeks.
I've purchased this vehicle back in september 2017 and the accellarator petal has gone out. my check engine light cans on and as i was driving, is gave a message saying engine power reducing. i've taken it to the jim ellis dealer to diagnose and they advised me it was the accellorator petal fault. this has been happening to several malibu's fie some years now and this issue needs a massive recall. no one should have to repair a vehicle within a year of purchasing. mind you my warranty is not in effect, it's expired. i've done research and several malibu's since 2008 has this same issue. once the reduce speed took place, it would not allow my vehicle to accelerate above 60 miles per hour while on the freeway.
My 2017 malibu has 87k miles and in the last couple of months whenever it rains and days following the traction control & engine light pops on, at the same time the dash displays the words "engine power reduced" (this is happening on the hwy at 70+mph). the engine losses a significant amount power dropping my vehicles speed down to around 30-40mph putting not only my family and myself in danger but other drivers as well. so, i had my vehicle analyzed and it threw out the code p2138 accelerator pedal position assembly. i usually pulled over to the service lane turned my vehicle off for a minute or so restart the engine and i'm able to go about my way (i learned to do that by reading countless msgs online of other motorist complaining about the same issue on vehicles with mileage as low as 2,600 miles. i called munday chevrolet in houston tx to buy the part and was told i couldn't purchase the part unless the dealership installed it? the parts guy seemed to instantly know what i was talking about, to say the least he has heard of this issues quite often. i'm not bashing chevy i'm actually a fan of the chevy malibu. i had a 2005 for 12yrs with little to know issues with over 250k miles. so when i deemed the time was right i traded in my "05 for a '17 thinking i would get the same satisfaction but sad to say this issue has spoiled that for me by putting my family, other drivers, and myself in harms way. on my daily commute i see so many of these 2016 and newer malibu's on the road and i begin wondering is this the next tragedy in the making on our us highways??? my wife's 2010 glk 350 mercedes was included in the takata airbag recall, needless to say that was a nervous time for us. well thanks for letting me express my thoughts on this issue. i hope & pray that this doesn't take an innocent life to be loss in order for this issue to be taken seriously. god bless!
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the check engine and engine reduced indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to steve rayman chevrolet (678-269-7886, located at 2155 cobb pkwy se, smyrna, ga 30080) where the technician performed a diagnostic test and replaced the throttle control cables; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 20,000.
Driving down the interstate which is 70 mph i got the error of reduced engine power and also p2135 it went off for about three weeks and it happened again today on my commute to work.my chevrolet malibu is a little over a year old. this car has had so many issues that need to be fixed
Driving the vehicle on the road and it loses power and wont let you drive over 30 mph. the vehicle also would not start. had to let the car sit for 15 seconds then try to start it again for it to start. then it would cut off while stopped at a traffic light. dealership fixed the pistons and added a new battery still had a problem and now they replaced accel pedal sensor. and now drives a little funny.
Was driving with car in drive and car check engine light came on with traction signal stating 'reduced speeds'. had to pull over and car would not go past 20 mph. cut car on and off 3 times before the reduced speed signal went off. was driving on the highway and it happened again and i immediately had to get off the highway because my kids were in the car.
Gear shifter gave out while driving. almost got rear ended. car shifted itself into neutral even though i shifted gears into park once i got to a safe place computer screen read neutral. car would not turn off from accessory mode and said "shift to park" but it would not. then when i tried to shift it jumped hard and you could see the engine jump as if it wasn't mounted properly. was able to get to a safe place but had to have it towed to dealer. dealer called today to say it was gear shifter. went bad but the battery had drained too and they refused to replace battery. the shifter problem is dangerous . i only had 11989 miles on it and it is 1 year old.
