Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2013 Chevrolet Malibu

The car was having interment electrical issues with the turn signals, and radio going off and on. now, the radio stopped completely, and the turn signals do not function. i have a low battery after testing. is this part of the generator module recall?? it is very unsafe for my daughter to drive, as there is nothing lit up on displays anymore.

My gauge cluster started malfunctioning 2 weeks ago while sitting in car on parked position. kicks on for about 30 minutes then will go black doesn't matter if i'm driving. my gm mechanic ordered the part but still has not arrived, there are other complaints for the same issue and this problem has not been corrected it seems up to this year. how am i supposed to fix my chevy if i cannot get the part. this is unacceptable.

Driving on the highway and battery charging system and stability track error msg showed up. car completely shut off and had to be towed.

I have a 2013 malibu lt with 52,000 miles on it. last month on the 20th of november service power steering warning started to flash on the information system. when that happens my doors would lock and my car would stall. however; unlike most other consumers who are having this problem my steering wheel didn't get tight and i did not lose control of my car. i could not do more than 40mph and sometimes if i hit a bump in the road service power steering would come on and the doors would lock and the car would stall and then go back to normal. i took my car in to genesis chevrolet to see what the problem was. they had my car for about a good 4 to 5 hours. they then came and informed me that they could not find anything wrong with my care because, no codes where popping up and the mechanic tried 4 times but could not duplicate the situation i was having. it is now december 11th and i am still having the same problem. i just drove to work today and went to make a right turn down the street leading to my job the service power steering flashed again ,the car stalled ,and the engine light came on. this time the car slowed all the way down until it came to a complete stop. even though my car had come to a complete stop it was still on and running. my radio still worked my heat was still on and i still could shift my gear shift. i put the car in park turned it off for about a minute and then started it back up. when i started it back up the engine light had gone off and i was able to accelerate my car and pull into the parking lot of my job. *tr

I purchased a 2013 chevy malibu 53,000 miles in october of 2018 from bob pulte chevrolet. the car ran great until almost a year to the date of purchase, at 72,534 miles, issues began. while stopped at a red light, foot on brake, i looked down at the dashboard and noticed the rpm needle had dropped to 0 & the car had stalled.i put the car in park, turned the key off and then back on to start the car. it sounded as if it didn't want to start but ultimately did. i continued driving and it happened again at the next red light. i took the car to the nearest repair shop which was firestone, to have it checked & was told the alternator and battery needed replaced. the following week the car stalled as it had 1st time & then sporadically again and again when i slowed down approaching a red light, stop sign & when pulling into a parking space. each time the car stalled it was difficult to start again. i took the car to a different firestone for a fresh set of eyes. this time the car stalled when their technician drove the car. a fuel system cleaning was recommended & done. the next suggestion was to replace the throttle body. a few days later, the car stalled again. when the car does stall i would lose power to everything except the radio. the lights shut off, doors stay locked & the car cannot be steered.i next took the car to the bob pulte chevrolet dealership & discussed the problem with them. after having the car for two days, they advised the car did not stall when they drove it, there were no codes, no check engine light on & without that there was nothing they could do. the next day when i pulled into a parking space at work, the car stalled again. i called bob pulte again-they said they would update the ecm module and reprogram the throttle body and everything that goes along with it - believing firestone was unable to do it. the car continues to stall.

I looked up on previous recall before i even bought the car new and seen the part in question was replaced before i bought it, under recall campaign number 13136 or 13142, what the car is doing is the exact symptoms as listed in the recall, it losescharge and dies on the highway, i have contacted gm and tghe dealer i bought it from and was told it was replaced once, and is no longer their problem, i seen on another site that if the recall part is again faulty, that they are responsible, so are they? this has happened in oct 2019 and nov 2019 stranding my daughter for hours.

This happened two days in a row i was driving me so me turning a corner and my car just stopped steer wheel locked up could move the car or nothing near had an accident i'm a petrified because i don't know when this god happens again i vaule my life this recall seriously needs to be looked into i worked hard many long days to save to get this car just for it to turn out bad i seriously need help with this life threatening issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle completely shut off without warning. the contact was able to coast the vehicle off the highway and attempted to have the engine jumpstarted. once the vehicle was jumpstarted, the vehicle experienced total electrical failure. also, the key would not eject from the ignition switch. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the battery was drained. the mechanic charged the battery. while driving home, the failure recurred as the contact pulled into the driveway. after the failure occurred, the check engine warning indicator flashed. the contact called hall chevrolet buick gmc (385 w dallas st, canton, tx 75103, 903-567-8148) and was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle and no further assistance was offered. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 129,000.

My 2013 chevrolet malibu headlights specifically the right passenger side light keeps going out, i've replaced the bulb, and eventually i had the wiring inside fixed because it was exposed. i bought the car certified pre-owned from the dealership and never realized until recently that the electrical wires that lead to the bulb socket were cut and then twist tied back together and wrapped in electrical tape, instead of having a complete rubber tube cover around the outside and being one continuous uncut piece the way it should be. so i had someone at a car shop try to fix it but now the light is going on and off again. i've seen many chevrolet vehicles on the road with the right passenger side low beam headlight out while the left one continues to work fine. there are plenty of reports about this same problem by many other owners on the internet. i'm not the only one with this problem, and a costly safety hazard. a recall needs to be made.

My car keeps losing power. it starts with the radio flashing on and off. then the steering locks up. the car sometimes shuts all the way off. it starts back up but it will shut off while driving. i purchased the car may 2019. it has happened several times. most recently 9/16/2019. driving the radio flashed the steering wheel tightened. it didnt shut down. but it when through that process like 5-6 times back to back. when researching the issue i see my car is not the only car having this problem. it appears to be a wide spread issue with the 2013 chevy malibu. it should be addressed.

While my wife was driving home the other day on a city street in a 20 mile zone the instrument panel went black..took to dealer they say they have never heard of this issue...so i believed them...till i get home and do a little research...there are hundreds of this complaint here on this site...next day i go to service manager...his reply i have been here 13 years and never seen this...oh i think someone is blowing smoke?? who knows the truth?? i have read many complaints of this issue...i dont know what to do except pay these guys...oh...one more thing before i go...if i ordered the part from them it was 275.00...i said i want the core to have it inspected. independantly...oh thatll be 500.00 dollars please....what 500 for a core charge...now it really smells fishy...so i bought a new one from another dealer for 56.00....how does it smell now ??..big corporate cover up??...seems this is a common problem with about 62 to 75 k miles with this model

Generator control module- engine is stalling and completely shutting off when stopped or slowing down at intersection or stopped at lights or stop signs. switching from hybrid to gas

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving 40 mph, the charging system error warning indicator illuminated. the contact mentioned that the battery did not hold a charge. an unknown local dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was previously inspected for the failure. no further assistance was provided. the vehicle was not taken to an dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 96,000.

2013 malibu eco eassist there is a recall for this type of car, the car is in the shop and need a generator control module..according to her vin # they are saying that it doesn't apply to this vehicle.. but it's the same type of car that the recall is on. the car while running on highway for 50 miles or more will start the loss of battery charging. if you continue to drive the car will cutoff and have to be towed. this has happened on two or three occasions.

19 august 2019 on this day twice i experience loss of power on the vehicle and power steering. luckily i did not hit any cars. was driving below 35 mph the first incident is when i came to a red light the radio turn off first then the car felt sluggish and the engine shut down lost control of everything and was coasting. vehicle gain power by it self and resume operations. during every light i stop it felt like it wanted to lose power. came to a parking lot driving around 5 mph completely the car shut off first radio and then whole vehicle this time it did not gain power by it self. had to place the vehicle in park turn the key off and restart it was able to park it. after reading here seems a lot of people are having this issue an immediate investigation should be open because this can possibly happen in the highway if i lose control power in the power steering i could potentially crash of get hit by a car . call gm and they said they do not have a bulletin ask them for an address to submit a formal complaint and was given one. i don't think gm cares hopefully you guys can look into the issue and get and answer as to why is happening consumers should not have to pay a diagnostic fee and not get answers

The charging system went completely dead while driving. i had no power steering everything went black no speed, no lights, i couldn't even turn on my hazards while i was sitting in the middle lane of the interstate hoping i wouldn't get killed because of this. why is there no warning to let you know your battery and charging system is dead. why is this not a recall from chevy? please advise.

Using turn signal or power windows the vehicle dies and quickly restarts. all power is lost momentarily. happens when battery voltage is below 13.5 volts. loss of power steering almost caused an accident twice. it was not wet out or raining, had been dry for several days so weather does not seem to be triggering the issue. service stabil trak warning also flashed in and cleared upon power disruption.

Coming home from work on 8/6/2019 traveling down md-210 highway, with car motion, the radio cut off and then entire car shut off. we stopped at a red light, so my husband took the key out of the ignition restarted the car and we traveled home. this is not the first time, we had our car checked at our mechanic's shop but at the time he could not determine what the issue could be and could not duplicate the issue. this is not the first time, the radio cuts off, instrument dash lights, cuts off and the the power steering shuts down just for a couple of seconds, it happened when we traveled to work, my husband turned the steering wheel right to get on the highway, the radio went off for a few seconds then it came back home. this is very dangerous and god forbid if this happens while car in motion on a green light it could kill someone. please recall this vehicle asap.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the instrument cluster warning indicators were flickering and the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the dimmer switch and battery were drained and needed to be replaced. the contact called rick hendrick buick (3244 commerce ave nw, duluth, ga 30096, (770) 954-8718) and informed them of the failures. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 85,000.

While driving, the dashboard instrument cluster will intermittently turn off and then back on.this happens irregardless of speed, temperature, passengers, turning, accelerating, etc. this issue has been brought to the attention of ase certified mechanic in my neighborhood who instructed that it was a faulty wire that there was no replacement for yet. after searching the internet forums, and other mediums, this seems to be a pretty common occurrence. plan to take it to the dealership within the next couple months as long as the problem does not worsen. i fear that driving with my infant one day that the car will completely lose power or shut down or worse, causing an accident and injury to myself, my child or other drivers. current milage is 76,500.

The timing chain in the engine is bad and there is a loud noise. the car shuts down at a stop and will not always restart. also the gps/radio screen started going off and on and then completely went dark.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving various speeds, all of the warning indicators begin to flash sporadically on the instrument panel. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the wiring harness under the driver's seat caused the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 118,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving at an unknown speed, the instrument panel blacked out without warning. the panel illuminated again after 40 miles of driving, but the failure recurred three times. the contact called weber chevrolet at 314-485-9902 (located at 12015 olive boulevard, creve coeur, mo 63141) and was informed that there was no recall. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 68,000.

A few times that i have been driving my car, i have experienced issues with the car turning off and losing power steering and control while in motion. the whole car turn off and wheel locks up, preventing me from being able to control the car. countless searching through forums led me to find many people who have experienced the same issue. and from the forums, many claim the reason for these problems happening is faulty battery cables that gm that doesn't want to admit. this is a safety issue because i have had my car turn off while driving on the highway and in the city. and i'm not the only experiencing this issue. it's widespread among 2013 chevrolet malibu's. here is a link to one of many forums taking about this issue: https://www.cargurus.com/cars/discussion-t33502_ds916791

I am or have experienced similar problems related to multiple recalls for my 2013 chevy malibu, yet i when attempt to get the repairs for the recall i'm told they're aren't any connected to my vin. if that's so, then my vin[xxx] and others like it should be added to the recalls. my malibu has been or is experiencing the issues brought up in recall #'s 50490, 50491, 13136, and 12212. now why am i stuck having to pay out of pocket for things that are known in a recall. this is very disturbing to me. going forward, should i succeed in getting this recall accepted, i don't need to here that it may be out of warranty. that wouldn't be fair either. as the prior owner couldn't have had the work done as a recall because the vin wasn't in the system in time to be done before any restrictions or warranty expired.as i am making this complaint, i am in the process of getting the repairs done and would appreciate being reimbursed for all expenses incurred. as i wait for a favorable response. thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tt *tr

Car shuts off completely while driving. electrical system is sporadic then shuts down.

My battery completely died and i needed a jump. the jump ended up not working so i purchased a new battery. now the airbag light is on and will not go off. after researching this problem i see that this is a known issue and still no recall on this problem. i have a 2013 chevrolet malibu eco. the forums are saying it's a problem with the sdm component. codes b101d-00(electronic control unit hardware) and u0184-00(lost communication with radio).

The car will randomly lose power and die while running and in motion. it starts with the radio going off, then all the dash lights flash off and on and then the vehicle will suddenly stop. this has happened 3 times over the past week and is a very dangerous situation. it happens when driving below 40 mph

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. when the contact attempted to start the vehicle, the key turned in the ignition; however, the vehicle did not start. the vehicle was jumpstarted and driven to an independent mechanic who determined that the camshaft failed and needed replacement. the vehicle performed normaly for a week, but later would not start again. the vehicle was taken to the same independent mechanic who determined that the variable valve timing intake and exhaust failed and needed repairs. the vehicle was repaired both times. the mechanic also stated that the wiring on the battery was done improperly. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 89,080.

Sometimes it happens when i turn on my blinker others its random but the car stalls and the radio turns off along with the power steering.

Takata recall the lights on my dash kept going in and out while i was driving and while stationary. while my car was off, with no key in the ignition, the gauges would make clicking sounds and bounce up and down about an 8th of an inch. the lights on the dash would stay off for days at a time, making it impossible for me to see how fast i was going or how much gas was in the car. sometimes the lights would click on for about 30 seconds and then the speedometer would be stuck at the last speed i was going at, for days, without showing anything on the digital speedometer. when i took it to get looked at, no codes were found. my car kept dying while i was driving, went and had my battery and alternator tested and they were 100% fine. car dash lights started flashing on and off while i was going around a curve. check engine, oil, wiper fluid, gas light, everything flashed on and off, then my steering locked up, causing me to go off of the road and hit a tree. my car was totaled.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving 40 mph on the freeway, the steering seized and the vehicle lost power without warning. the contact managed to veer the vehicle to the shoulder of the road. the vehicle failed to restart and the key would not release from the ignition. approximately two hours later, the vehicle did not resume normal operation. the failure recurred multiple times. the manufacturer and dealer were made aware of the failure. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 13v173000 (electrical system). the failure mileage was approximately 66,000.*pm the vehicle was towed to do the dealer and consumer was told it was not electrical problem but block cable was replaced.*jb

While driving on the highway my car will just shut down completely then turn back on. sometime the radio will go out with power steering, etc. it just shuts down for no reason. we've replacement the battery cable several months ago as we had the exact same problem and it worked for about 6 months. if i use my turn signal sometimes it will shut down and turn back on. did it about 20 times today on the way to work. with my two small children in the car with me. i am usually driving around 65 to 75 mph when this happens.

When my 2013 chevy malibu is in motion and someone is in the passenger seat (many but not all times) all of the electronics, including the electronic speedometer, and all dashboard gauges, in the car stop working and notifications about the airbag system and braking system appear. the mechanical aspects of the car still seem to work fine, but the notifications about the airbags and braking make me concerned that it is not safe. this has been happening for a year. i have tried taking my vehicle to the dealership multiple times and have been told they either cannot replicate it or they will "fix" something that doesn't end up solving the problem. given that this problem started randomly and not with any intervention on my part of the part of any mechanic, i am contacting nhtsa because i am concerned that this problem is related to the airbag sensor in the passenger seat and that this might be happening with other people and could represent real danger if this really is affecting the airbag and braking systems (even when the passenger seat is not in use).

When driving my malibu it seems to have a short circuit when i turn the wheel even the slightest. i have changed the batteries checked all the wires and everything seems fine. i have figured out even when i'm driving 70mph on the highway with my family in the car the power steering will go out and make it hard for me to even turn. i have read online that this is happening to malibu's everywhere and that gm is not willing to make it a national recall because it must be happening while they see the car. so i guess i have to wait for me to crash? to see that the power steering gave out on me along with the rest of the electrical work on the inside of the car.

I drove four hours to buy this car get there its pour rain do test drive around block buy car get ready and leave and stop at gas station cause its out of gas well passenger rear tire had 5 lbs of air in it fill it up get on highway and car starts shaking like crazy and is all over the road car lot is close and so is rental place so i drive home and have texted owner to tell him to get tow truck at my house in morning to pick it up i didn't want it and he did reason im writing this is i told him how bad this car was and i looked on there site and its back up for less than i bought it for that car is way to dangerous to be on the road

When driving or parked the whole dash board will cut out completely resulting in loss of speedometer, gas gauge, temp gauge and tach. sometimes it will come back on sometimes it does not for days, have to keep a speedometer app on my phone while driving now. gm seems to be ignoring this issue as they do most electrical issues, i traded in a 2000 impala with electrical issues just to get another gm car with electrical issues at a higher price. i have called multiple dealerships and non of them seems to have an idea of what it could be which tells me gm is not even trying to find a root cause for the issue, they are more than willing to let me bring it in and have the whole system looked over at my cost though. have been dealing with this for over a year now

The entire electrical system will randomly shut down causing loss of power steering, power brakes, entire dashboard, all lights, hazard lights etc. this can happen at any time, on the freeway, stopped at a light, parked etc. sometimes it goes dark and restarts itself while driving....sometimes it goes dark and won't restart for minutes or longer while in traffic without working hazard lights. if parked, it can't be taken out of 'park" to push it out of traffic or try to start it in "neutral" and the key can't be removed from the ignition.there are no error codes to diagnose the issue and it won't ever happen while it is in the shop (of course) this is the ultimate safety hazard to me and my family.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while operating the vehicle, the radio screen suddenly shut off and the electric power steering failed. as a result, the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who indicated that the battery was faulty and needed to be replaced. the battery was replaced, but the failures continued. the manufacturer and dealer were not notified. the failure mileage was 92,000.

Eco hybrid gcm needs to be replaced. it's a recall for it but they said it doesn't cover this one.but it has the same problem. *tr

Door locks engaging and disengaging randomly while driving, headlights turning off and on randomly while driving, car starting while parked in garage (no remote start). dealership replaced bcm, could not guarantee this fixed the problem. indicated they had never seen the issue before. within 2 weeks, all issues repeated themselves. returned to dealership. the dealership kept the car for 2 weeks and then called me and left a message to pick it up as they could not find the issue. when i called back, the dealership said "it was a good thing you haven't picked up the vehicle yet, it started on its own 3 times this morning". if i had picked this vehicle up, the issue would have happened again while i was at home. case has been filed with chevrolet customer car, and sufs (gm global safety). no action has been taken. no engineers have been sent down to look at the car from gm headquarters. after the car started on its own at the dealership, they changed out the ignition switch, but again, cannot guarantee the issues won't reoccur. car was returned to the dealership for a third time on may 2nd after the headlights turned on and off 3 times on the way to work on may 1st. after having the vehicle until may 10th, i was informed that the dealership could not find an issue, and i should pick the car up as they could not diagnose the problem if they do not see it. the response from gm has been a joke. the car is not safe to drive. i cannot drive it at night, and cannot part it in my garage, as it could start and cause my entire family to die from carbon monoxide poisoning, or could overheat from running in park while we are sleeping and start a fire. i cannot in good conscience sell the car either. so, i am stuck with an unsafe vehicle that general motors will not take responsibility for. my concern is that there may be other vehicles on the road with the same issue.

2013 chevy malibu electrical problem. all dash electrical went out and key could not be removed from ignition. no spedometer, gas guage, temp, etc. drained battery and new battery.

2013 chevrolet malibu. consumer writes in regards to faulty generator control moduls. *ld the consimer stated the vehicle should have been included in the recall, but experienced the same failure. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the electrical system under the front passenger seat made the instrument panel lighting turn off intermittently. on another occasion, the instrument panel lighting remained off. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 63,000. the vin was not available.

As i am driving down the road, the entire dashboard goes black, then it just lights back up as if i were just starting the car...all other functions regularly while the dashboard blacks out...the radio still works. this happens sporaducally meaning there is no rhyme or reason to it..i am scared it will catch on fire.

If the key is removed without the transmission in park, the vehicle may rollaway as occupants are exiting , increasing the risk of injury

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet malibu. while driving various speeds, the instrument panel lighting would inadvertently dim or flicker. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

Less than 99,000 miles... radio light flickers off and on. vehicle goes dead at red light, stop sign or whenever vehicle is not in motion. took vehicle to dealership and replaced the engine computer module as requested. however, problem still exist but more worse. 'service power steering' light came on while driving on a city street but before i could make a safe turn, it became too tough to steer almost causing an accident. battery good, alternator good..no one really knows what's wrong with the vehicle.

I started my car this morning it started funny then died but started right back up then the service stibilkl track came on . but after a couple min it went away so i backed out of my garage and started to work went about two miles noticed that the fan for the heater was not working the the power stearing service light came on kept driving the the service battery system light came on after about 12 miles the dash lights went out the i could smell something getting warm then the car engin stoped costed in to the parking lot got out there was nothing put the chargere on the batterty it started but not sure if to drive it home after charging or not. i see there was a problem with the modual on that year of cars but mine never had got fixed or nothing. so not sure what to do it has right at 100000 on it now so no warenty. i called the chevy garage they have no idea what could be wrong but it just wories me smelling somthing getting hot

Expressway.the radio blacked out, stopped playing and then the car started shutting down-everything!steering went out, radio, lights, blinkers, etc.i took it as slow as i could all the way home and got onto back roads.this proved to be even more hazardous-every time i turned the steering wheel it would start to shut down again & again, all the way home.i took the car to the dealer-fixed but now happening again.sometimes it happens quickly and recovers quickly enough that the engine is not involved.my warning sign is that the radio cuts out and the screen goes blank.that's when i know to prepare myself. sometimes that is all that happens.other times it's major! i look for an escape route-can i get off the road quickly, are there other cars around me, brace both hands on the steering wheel, slow my speed and pray.2/10/19, i was driving 55+ mph on a 2 lane road.it was a fast radio out, fast engine wind down and out of power and door locks went on and off.there was a driveway for me to pull in to and assess the situation.engine then engaged and things seemed back to normal.i continued home, had 2 issues but i was going slower as i was aware this may happen again.i pulled over and continued each time.i had to stop at the store and was pulling into a parking spot and the car was trying to shut down and steering went out more than once until i finally got in the parking spot.drove home, parked.i went into the house an read the manual.i decided to go out and check my fuses.key fob did not work.doors were unlocked, got in car, put key in the ignition and car was totally dead.key would not come out of the ignition.my husband called tow truck in the am to jump.car would not jump so he had it towed to dealer where it is at this moment.i am afraid i'm going to be killed or cause someone else harm if they end up crashing into me because of the quick shut down and loss of steering!!!
