Recently reported STEERING problems on 2010 Chevrolet Malibu

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 20,000.

Power steering has failed. while driving approx. 15 miles per hour power steering warning comes up and anti-traction light came on at that point the steering wheel jerks to the left and hit the curb. turned car off and back on to try and reset. this process works sometimes but not reset every time you do this we have to do it multiple times to keep going. this is a highly dangerous situation and i can see that the 2010 malibu has had enough issues to get gm to add this car to the recall from 2008 and 2009 malibu's. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while making a left turn between 30-40 mph, the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the bearings in the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 14e044000 (steering). the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 96,000.

Power steering goes out in middle of left hand turn. pull over turn car off start car power steering back on. happens off and on every few days. *tr

The power steering assist light has been coming on in my car but the power steering has worked. i took it to the dealer twice and was told the problem was nothing to worry about. it would cost hundreds to fix. the power steering failed, however, when i was operating the vehicle at approximately 20 mph. i pulled over turned off the ignition restarted the car and the power steering worked. gm has recalled earlier model years for the same problem. see recall notice at this url: http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/pages/news/us/en/2014/mar/0331-power-steering.html gm has refused to remedy this safety defect, tell me the part at issue or or inform me as to whether it is the same part that led to the recall on the earlier model year. *tr

My seat belt warning pings when i am buckled up and goes off as frequently as it would if i was not buckled up. my "service air bag" light randomly pops up my car revs when im driving at the same pace on a flat road. which is scary because it speeds up too. my driving wheel sticks sometimes. i feel like its not a safe car i bought this car in feb thinking it was a good investment and i regret it 100%. *tr

While leaving the parking lot, my power steering alert came on. i took my car into the mechanic, and he found an error message relating to the steering column in my car. he said to fix the problem, they would need to replace the entire steering column, align the wheels/steering, ect. all at a cost of about $873. my car isn't even 5 years old yet, and i'm forced to replace the steering column? i see that gm has recalled the 2004-2006, 2009 malibu models, and a number of other years and models due to faulty power steering. i drive home to see my mom who is at the end of life with cancer. that drive is about 130 miles one way, mostly interstate driving at 65mph. if i don't have this fixed, i could possibly loose my power steering, or worse, loose steering all together, and not only injure or kill myself, but others on the road. so i am forced to fix this issue, which i feel should be included in the recalls. i don't think i should have to pay almost $1000 for a car that isn't even 5 years old, that i paid $25,000+ for. resolution for me would be to be reimbursed for the work i'm going to have done, and have the 2010 malibu's added to the recall list. thank you *tr

I was stopped to wait on oncoming cars to pass to turn left onto a street. as i was about to turn with my children in the car the steering wheel locked up and would not turn.if, my steering wheel would have not been turned already, as i was getting ready to turn, i would have been hit on the right side where my child was sitting. i had no option but to drive up on the curb. this is the same situation as the 2008 and 2009 model malibu's which have a recall on them for steering:electric power assist system gm's recall #14v15300 recalled 3/31/14. obviously this recall needs to be added to the 2010 model since it is still occuring. i took my car to the freeland chev. where they had to replace the entire steering column due to the bad torque sensor. this cost me 689.00 to replace, i feel gm should take responsibility for this and add the 2010 model malibu to the recall list so that i can be reimbursed for their error and so their customers that put trust in purchasing their vehicles are safe. to note i have contacted and spoke with several reps at gm none of which offered any type of help with this matter. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving 20 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning light illuminated. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the intermediate steering shaft needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 124,000.

While going thru a turn the input shaft came out of the rack and pinion causing loss of steering. wheels went straight causing the car to jump the curb and strike boulders in the land scape. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving at an unknown speed, the power steering failed without warning. the failure caused the contact to use excessive force to maneuver the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 70,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated while attempting to make a turn, the steering wheel vibrated multiple times without warning. on another occasion, the steering wheel seized and excessive force was required. the eps warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the technician diagnosed that the power steering failed and the torque sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v064000 (steering). the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the power steering warning light illuminated and excessive force was required to turn the steering wheel. the contact turned the vehicle off and restarted but the failure persisted. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician stated that the input torque sensor failed and the steering shaft needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer had not been notified of the failure. the contact was made aware that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14e044000 (steering). the approximate failure mileage was 125,861.

My 2010 malibu is now making a creaky/clunky noise when steering into a turn. it is most noticeable at slow speeds. i know the power steering motor has been an issue in prior model years. this vehicle is currently under the recall for the brake light / traction control / cruise control issues under recall # 13036. there has been no diagnosis done on the power steering as i will bring this to the dealer's attention when i bring the vehicle in for the known recall repairs. the car is now grounded until the repairs can be made as it is just too unsafe to drive at this point. *tr

The traction control light comes on and stays on when i shut off the car it goes out ,also my brake light stays on also when im going around a corner the car pulls to the left and it feels like its floating almost i brought it in ad they said it was separation ,i just put new tires on it and it isn't right, also my electrical something is wrong the radio light will blink of then come on and go dim, there is also a almost grinding noise coming from thefront right tire ,i paid alot of money for this car and i wish i would have got something different there seems to be alot wrong with it ,i brought it in on warranty and they fixed brake light and that's it, and then they charged me for a loaner car, {friendlychev}178.00.how can i be charged for a loaner car ,and they didn't fix anything else when it wasunder warranty,i got scammed !!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would suddenly decelerate and the steering, abs and traction control sensor lights would illuminate. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the defect. the failure mileage was 52,000.

Power steering assist shakes steering wheel back and forth while operating at low speeds. wheels turn rapidly left to right. have also had times in the past where steering light came on in dash at highway speeds and power assist steering does not work. seems like 2010 model malibu should also be added to the recent steering recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the steering wheel became hard to maneuver as the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for a diagnostic. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 96,000.

I started my car to back up and the service esc indicator came on and then the service power steering came on. i had no power steering. i tried backing up but could barely move the car. i ended up shutting the care off and restarted it and the power steering came back. this went on for a day or so. once while driving the lights came on and i had no power steering. this could have cause an accident while driving. luckily i was on a straight part of the high way, with children inside. i cannot understand if there are recall on all models prior to my 2010 and this is an ongoing problem why doesn't gm extend the warranty or pay for this. it is costing me $700 to be fixed. the entire steering column is being replaced. my car has been in the shop for over 14 days. this is so wrong and i will never ever boy another gm car! *tr

Started the car one morning and heard a chime, then observed power steering warning on the display. steering needs more effort than usual ever since. *tr

Last spring i had an issue with my 2010 chevy malibu with the electronic power steering assembly. the electronic steering column assembly failed resulting in no power steering. after research i became aware this is a common problem with chevy malibu's but was only covered in recalls until 2009. i paid for repair on this out of pocket like many other people who have filed complaints as seen with research on the internet. i have just discovered the company that made the steering column for gm, dorman, is recalling their steering column that was installed in the 2010 chevy malibu. this recall was posted in july. with the trouble gm has been through they should be on a better honor system. this car was manufactured by general motors and should be recalled by general motors who should be reimbursed by dorman. the phone number for dorman is 1-800-523-2492 and you could potentially be reimbursed but you will need the part number of the defective steering column. general motors offers no cooperation in part number information. even with previous calls i had with gm saying all parts used in cars were identified by the vin number of the car so they know the origin where all parts were manufactured. it appears to be a finger pointing game and the loser is the consumer. *tr

Tl * the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the steering wheel seized and the brakes engaged. the contact mentioned that the esc and the abs warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was unable to be diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 101,000. dr

I own a 2010 chevy malibu. my previous complaint number in the nhtsa data base is 10575915. this is an update to the well know intermittent electric power steering (eps) loss for recall bulletin: 14116. however this bulletin only covers up to 2009 chevy malibus. i own a 2010 chevy malibu with the defective electric power steering issue. after a phone call and waiting several days for a return call from gm help desk i called back and was informed to bring my car to a local chevy dealer to confirm that i have this same electronic power steering issue. it was verified that i do have the same issue that thousands of cars are being recalled about. it was highly recommended that i do not take the car off the lot without getting it repaired for the reason of a safety issue losing power steering. i did object to this repair but was assured by gm support that a bulletin covering my 2010 chevy malibu would be coming out at the end of the month and i would receive a reimbursement form. hesitant, i did do the repair of $996. after a week of calling gm support with escalating my situation and many unreturned phone calls i was persistent in calling back. unfortunately even though this is the confirmed issue as the recall bulletin 14116 for the defective power steering that is covered only until 2009. my 2010 is not covered and there is no recall bulletin anyone is aware of that will cover this issue for the reason my vin number is not covered. i was told it could take years, if it ever will happen at all. this is highly discouraging that it was officially verified that i have the same eps issue that thousands of cars are receiving repairs and my car is not covered because of the year and vin number. even more discouraging is that gm will not stand behind their product in this issue. why did we ever bail this company out with taxpayer money? too big to fail? too big to care! *tr

Power steering failed while pulling out into traffic. driving approximately 10 mph pulling onto a highway the steering cut out and the warning light illuminated. in order to avoid being struck by oncoming traffic, the vehicle had to be backed up down the street still unable to turn, and struck a light pole. no damage to vehicle other than rear fender popped out of place. upon restarting the vehicle all functions were normal and warning light was off. car was taken to dealer where it was test driven and scanned for codes- no problems found. this is a recall issue in the 2008-2009 malibu, but 2010 models are not included even though they use the same parts. (gm's recall #14v15300). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the steering wheel locked without warning while driving at various speeds. the contact had to turn the steering wheel left and right while restarting it to regain the steering wheel function. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number 14v153000 (steering). the failure and current mileage were 97,000.

My wife was driving and the power steering just stoped functoning and became very hard to steer she was able to pull into a store and after a time restarted the car and it was fine . g.m. has a recall that started on 3/31/14 on 2007, 2008, 2009, chevy malibu but not on 2010 malibu i checked with the dealer they said that their have been many other 2010 malibu with this same problem. we are older 65 and 67 and cannot afford to pay for a repair hope there is not a accident. *tr

The power steering keeps going out...it has gone out on me as i was turning a corner and i went into someone's yard almost hitting a telephone pole. i have a hard time turning the wheels when it goes out and my wife drives this car everyday. this is very unsafe and could injure someone. chevrolet should have a recall or give vouchers to get it fixed since i was quoted a price of $700 to get this resolved. why does it take someone dyeing to get recalls to happen? *tr

At first i lost power steering when traveling high speeds on the highway. now the power steering fails with just short trips around town. this is a huge safety concern, especially for my wife. she does not have the strength to turn the wheel at slow speeds. i do not want to pay accident surcharges on top of the repair bill for this issue. this power steering issue is documented all over the web and affects many models that have the electronic power steering box. there is a problem with the electric power steering box related to the electronic stability control (esc) and the steering wheel position sensor. the steering wheel position sensor cannot be replaced at this time (or maybe never). the entire steering column must be replaced. this is at a very costly expense when a cheaper repair is an option. i researched a car owner who had to replace the steering column three times due to failure of the position sensor and there is no recourse for us consumers. every 20,000 miles after warranties were expired. i am [xxx] years old and have only owned american made cars, just about all gm products. if this issue does not get resolved in a professional way i will be going to the ford product. i hope i will not be forced to the foreign cars for the reason i will not return to gm if they do not stand behind their products. i am optimistic at this point i can remain a happy gm consumer. i research i have found the mini cooper had the same issue of power steering failure. they stood behind their product and offered a 13 year or 200,000 mile warranty on the power steering module. http://www.norcalminis.com/2013/05/mini-power-steering-pump-warranty.html this would be a very wise choice to offer this solution with the recent of the recall with the ignition shutting off while the car is operational causing fatalities. *tr

I was driving on the expressway 70mph and my power steering alert came on and my power steering went out. i exited the expressway and stopped at a gas station turned off the car and when i turned the car back on the power steering worked again. however, the incident occurred 3 times the next day on my way home from work (however not on my way to work that morning). each time i had to pull over and turn the car off and on again. took the car to the dealership and had to pay over $600 to have my steering column replaced. now there is a recall for several of the previous models of the malibu, but not my 2010, although i did experience this same problem. i purchased my 2010 malibu in november of 2009. if more information is needed please feel free to contact me. *tr

Driving in very busy city traffic and i almost wrecked because the power steering went out. i drove it home but it was very hard to make a turn. this was very scary and i pulled it up on computer and i see people have been complaining they had the same problem with this car and year. it cost me $ 823.63 to get the steering column fixed and recalibrated. *tr

Power steering problems. power steering issues have happened 3 times in the last 4 months. loss of power steering. *js

Was driving home from work on expressway. power steering came up on display and steering wheel was almost impossible to turn. took to dealership and code stated that steering column needed replaced. huge safety issue cause there was no warning and steering just froze. very lucky that there was no accident. *tr

I was driving home (ct) from work (ny) when all of a sudden my power steering wasn't working then the esc light came on the dash board was reading service esc / power steering. the has been no problem with the power steering until now which made the ride home scarier then ever with no power steering it was had to turn the vehicle. *tr

The power steering will stop working and across the information center screen will scroll "power steering malfunction, service esc". while driving you can feel the steering wheel jerking from side to side, and when stopped you can release the wheel and visually see the steering wheel jerk from side to side. i called my local chevrolet dealer about the issue, and they said that they know exactly what the problem is because of the number of calls they have received on other malibu's showing the same issue. i was told that they would have to replace the column and it would run approx. $900. i was also told that they had the same issue in the models 4-8 years prior to mine and that they were allowed to fix those per gm. if the issue has happened before in the same model of car why wouldn't that fix be grandfather for future model years if suffering from the same issue? the issue i was told is from a faulty steering wheel angle position and torque sensor. *tr

I had slowed down to get off an exit and the power steering word came up on the dash. *tr

So gm recalls the steering on 2004-06, 08, 09....i have an 2010 that has the same issue that is happening with the steering. i fortunately knew what to do when i lost my power steering doing 70+ mph on i-39. i ended up paying over $500 to have my steering fixed and that is just for one of the sensors...what about a recall on all the cars that have this system????? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the steering wheel seized as the power steering warning lamp illuminated. the contact shut off and restarted the engine several times before the power steering warning lamp no longer illuminated. the vehicle was not taken for inspection or repairs. the manufacturer was not made aware of failure. the approximate failure mileage was 101,500.

When i started the engine on my 2010 chevrolet malibu, the information center displayed the message "power steering" and service esc" and when trying to drive the car, it was extremely difficult to steer. after driving about 200 feet in a parking lot, i realized steering was too difficult and driving the car was unsafe. i turned off the ignition and restarted the engine, and luckily the problem temporarily went away. however, i had this problem reoccur again over 20 times between 2/2014 to 4/2014. for my own safety and fear that the issue could worsen and appear at any time while driving, i proactively took the car into my local chevrolet dealer, where they diagnosed and fixed the problem. here is their diagnosis and fix: cause code: c0545 torque sensor corrective action: replaced steering column i have also opened a case# with general motors/chevrolet customer assistance and repeatedly contacted them about the issue because i feel it is the same symptoms and resolution as outlined in the recent 31mar2014 (electric) power steering recall found at the following link: [ http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/pages/news/us/en/2014/mar/0331-power-steering.html ]. chevrolet customer assistance, however, indicated that my vin number/vehicle is not covered under the recall and will not reimburse me for the repair. i am contacting the nhtsa to inform them that vehicles not listed under the above recall, namely the 2010 chevrolet malibu, potentially have the same problem/safety issue and require the same repair. i hope that the nhtsa encourages general motors to reassess the vehicles covered under the current recall and extend the recall to also include the 2010 chevrolet malibu model year. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering warning light illuminated and caused the steering wheel to enter into manual mode. the contact stated that the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the dealer performed a diagnostic which located the failure at the electric steering module and sensor. the dealer advised the contact that the vehicle was not included nhtsa campaign number 14v153000 (steering). the approximate failure and current mileage was 83,696.

Was driving a curvy road when a digital warning on the column sounded and the power steering went out, and it was difficult to negotiate the curve. i checked went a got the steering fixed at a dealer ship and then found out that there had been a recall issued for the 2008-2009 malibu, the 2009 and 2010 hhr and the 2010 cobalts but not the 2010 malibu. *tr

Our 2010 malibu started having the power steering light coming on while the vehicle is moving. afraid we will loose power and not be able to handle the car. *tr

While driving the service esc light came on and my vehicle lost all power steering. i pulled over, turned car off and back on again, power steering came back to normal and lights went off only to come back on and lost power steering again. now i can hear a clicking noise coming from the steering column and the steering wheel is jerking. i will be contacting gm about this as i see this is happening to several 2010 chevy malibu owners. i have contacted the dealer who i purchased the vehicle from to no avail. not good! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 60 mph, the power steering failed. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

The power steering sensor is bad and to repair it they say the entire steering column has to be replaced. this is my daughters car and would be bad if the power steering went out while she was driving. so far the steering has only failed when she started the car. this has happened two times in three days. *tr

Traveling approx 40mph, esc sensor went off and power steering went out as i was beginning a right hand turn. turned off the car at the next stop light and restarted, service esc light and power steering were back to normal. continued to have the intermittent issue throughout the next few days to now where it stays on. car is still functional, but turning is extremely difficult and would be near impossible for some people. gm service is $900 for a new power steering motor + labor. i generally am willing to pay to get service, but electronic power steering has been an issue for many years and many models of gm vehicles. this is something that should be warrantied/recalled outside of bumper to bumper as it is a serious safety issue if it were to go off and be the cause of any accident. as far as i can tell, it has warrantied in the past based on the malibu forum information (2008 and previous). *tr

Driving on the highway when we got a power steering warning light and the power steering went out. we took the vehicle to the chevy dealer where we bought it bill jacobs chevrolet in joliet illinois and they said the warranty was expired and gm refused to take responsibility for it. it had just over 40,000 miles on it. this is a safety issue and both the dealership and gm swept the problem under the table..oh,by the way they did charge us 1,200 dollars to repair it. *tr

I was backing up from the store and i heard a traction noise doing from the steering wheel, it got worse stiffer and stiffer to steer , i have 2 children in the car with me scare to death to hit something!, my husband took it to the dealership they charged us 520 dollars with a discount they said. so upsetting because it is a 2010 malibu only 49000 miles , doing some research i know there have been cars recall from gm from the same problem!!! are they waiting for someone to die to do something about it!! so upset! *tr

We were driving on our way home from church my wife and i at 45 mph when we lost the power steering immediately without notice.the esc light came on. it was a miracle i was able to control the vehicle at the rate of speed that we were going considering i am a [xxx] year old diabetic. thank you jesus! *tr parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I was traveling approx. 30-35 mph, the roads were wet and slushy from a recent snow storm. suddenly i lost all power to steer....car did not stall, i was just unable to steer. i attempted to pull off the road and because i was unable to steer correctly....i went into the snow. i suffer from a neuro-muscular disease (ms) so i have limited ability to control the car without power steering. i proceeded to turn off the car, when i restarted it, the fault message on the dash disappeared and the power steering returned. i was able to back the car out and continue to a safe place to park. today i put a call into the dealer who sold me the car to see if their had been some sort of recall on the power-steering components. my next call tomorrow will be to chevy. i live in a snowy part of the country and i find this very dangerous and potentially could cause a serious accident. i checked the internet and i see many others who had the same problem. i don't know how to have this repaired as i am living on a limited income....social security. if so many people had the same problem, why hasn't chevrolet recalled these cars to make necessary changes so that this does not happen to others. while i am the primary driver of this car...it was bought for me by my boyfriend. the name on the registration is [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
