I was driving on sr-512 near puyallup, washington. i was just moving to the right at the base of the freeway on-ramp, when my electronic power steering went out. at nearly the same time, electronic stability control activated for no apparent reason. each of my wheels began braking independent from one another. this latest for approximately 10-seconds and did not happen again. the power steering also returned to normal for a brief period of time. later that same morning, i was at a stop sign and was waiting to turn right. when traffic cleared enough for me to begin my turn i turned the wheel to the right. almost at the same moment the steering went out again, and i had to fight to complete the turn. had i been an elderly person, without sufficient strength to force the steering wheel to turn, i would have certainly crashed into the cars waiting to turn left at the intersection in question. the steering problem has persisted ever since and gotten much worse over time. i've noticed if i stop the car...turn off the ignition...and restart the car the electronic steering resets and will be fine for up to 10-15 minutes. but the problem always returns. i looked online and saw that malibus from 2004-2009 experienced this same problem and were recalled. i went to my local chevrolet dealer and asked if they would extend the recall protection to cover my 2010 malibu and i was advised they would not. this is a real safety problem, and while i can't afford the $2,000 repairs to get it fixed, i can't imagine trying to deal with this issue when winter arrives and the roads turn icy. this problem would most certainly cause and accident. i hope you can influence chevrolet to extend their existing malibu recall to cover the 2010 models that have the same problems as those models from the previous seven model years. thank you.

The power steering on our 2010 chevrolet malibu stopped functioning recently, requiring the use of great force to bring the vehicle to a safe parked position. upon restarting the vehicle, the power steering returned, but the steering wheel jerked frequently to the left while driving and idling. the car was taken to the local chevrolet dealer which diagnosed an "internal fault in the steering column," and replaced the entire steering shaft. the dealer reported that this is the same safety concern and the same part that has been the subject of a safety recall affecting chevrolet malibus through the 2009 year. no recall has yet been issued for this problem for the 2010 vehicle year, so we are out $1,000 for the cost of repair. why haven't owners of vehicles with this faulty steering mechanism been warned of this problem, and why hasn't a safety recall been issued by chevrolet? *tr

Power steering is mostly gone. kicks in for a few seconds after ignition, but cuts out pretty soon. full manual steering now. don't understand why this is included in the other eps recall from gm. this is a major safety issue. many gm service centers are lying about the necessary repair when you take the affected vehicles in. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost power. in addition, the "service esc, engine power reduced and traction control" was displayed across the message board. the vehicle was taken to a dealer on multiple occasions where it was diagnosed that the throttle body, the throttle body sensor, spark plugs, torque sensor, and the steering wheel needed to be replaced. the dealer also stated that a carbon cleaning needed to be performed. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 45,000.

Power steering went out on interstate and has continued to go out in last few days since incident. has not gotten so bad that power steering is not working pretty much at all. info center says power steering esc off. seen there has been million car plus recall on this issue with same model car but apparently not mine!?!? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving at 45 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. as a result, the contact had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to turn the vehicle and the power steering light illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 80,236. the vin was unavailable.

Power steering went out without any indication!!! *tr

While driving to work, i noticed the steering shake and stiffen up and i had loss of all power steering. soon after that i had my driver side tire blow out and almost caused an accident. a couple of days later, i drove it to the dealership and the service representative told me that chevy malibu's did have a recall on the electric power steering pump and torque sensor but not for my model (ltz). which didn't make sense to me. just because it's a different trim, the parts would be different? it doesn't seem possible. if this issue is occurring in chevy malibu's, it should be addressed to all malibu's regardless the trim of the vehicle. i would appreciate any help with this issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 50 mph, there was an excessive vibration within the steering wheel and an unexpected loss of power steering occurred. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road, where the engine was turned off. after restarting the vehicle, it resumed normal operation for a brief moment and the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the steering wheel torque sensor would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired by an independent mechanic. the manufacturer was notified of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 149,000. ....updated 06-16-15 *bf updated 10/3/2017*cn

When i started my vehicle, an indicator light immediately reported a need to service my esc and my power steering was disabled. after restarting the vehicle, it seemed to correct itself. now, when driving, my steering wheel vibrates when there is no torque applied to the wheel and makes a chattering noise periodically. this has been going on for a week now. *tr

I was driving my 2010 chevrolet malibu, going approximately 45 mph when the steering wheel locked up. the car gave an error 'power steering" and 'service esc." i could not steer the car off the road and was almost rear ended. i turned my hazard lights on and shut the car off. after 10-15 seconds i turned the car on and the error was gone; however my steering wheel is making clicking noises and jerks to the right. i am afraid to drive the car now because if it happens again i might not be able to avoid an accident. i called gm and they indicated that the recall for the power steering on my model of car only covered the 2009 and not the 2010, although it is the same part and malfunction. *tr

Was driving on the interstate when a car from a side road, failed to stop at the sign. i swerved to avoid...which i did. and my power steering light came on, along with my ecs. warning light. i now have no power steering. although it does reset it's self after shutting it off. but will come back on sort after it is running again. there is a recall on this if it were a 09, since mine is a 2010 there's not. nothing changed between the two. so u ask why is mine not included? *tr

2010 chevrolet malibu. consumer writes in regards to electric power steering problems. *smd

I was driving with my son and his friend (both in the back seat thankfully!) down a hill (maybe 10-20 mph) to a stop light when i heard a pinging noise and no longer had control of steering. the power steering and esc warnings were showing on the dashboard and steering was exceptionally hard. i was able (barely) to make the turn and pull over to the side of the road and turned the car off (very hard to do at a slow mph). i waited about 10-20 seconds and turned it back on and it seemed fine. i had an appointment for an oil change the next day and planned on asking them to check it. later that same night, i was driving at about 35 mph when the same thing happened on a main road. i pulled into a parking lot (not easily) and turned the car off and back on, but it did not reset itself. the next morning i took my car for an oil change and they told me that the power steering is electrical and that they would have someone look at it the next day (it was sunday and i needed to wait until monday). monday morning they called me and told me that i would need to bring it to the dealer for replacement of the power steering motor and that they've seen this multiple times with gm cars. i brought it to h&l chevy in darien, ct where i bought it and they told me that although there is a large recall for this issue, that my car is not eligible for it even though it's the exact same problem!! i see on the nhtsa website that there are many complaints about this with a 2010 malibu and i would like to know how to get this covered by gm -- it's ridiculously expensive for a single parent (or anyone for that matter!) *tr

The power steering went out on the car during a turn making it almost impossible to steer. the console displayed power steering, service esc. after stopping and restarting the car the problem cleared but continues to occur without warning numerous times daily. turning the car off and back on clears the problem for a few minutes or up to a few hours. i have found that this exact problem is under recall for malibu's up to 2009 and would seem to me that it needs to be extended to newer cars as well. *tr

The headlight of the car keep burning off, i have changed the bulb 5 or 6 times in each side, snd we change the connectors one time. so annoying. it is very hatd to replace tem and labor is so expensive. i have a power steering, electronic stability control (esc) issue with the same car. very scary. the steering wheel locks and you can not steer. thankfully there were no cars and nothing major happened. we got so scared. it has happen to times while driving it.

The power steeling went on the car. it was extremely difficult to turn the wheel. the power steering light came on in the vehicle. apparently this has been the case for all of the chevy malibu's. this is very dangerous and should be part of a recall like the previous years were. i think there needs to be some changes to the power steering columns to ensure this doesn't happen in the future makes and chevy needs to do the right thing and issue a recall on the 2010 malibu to cover this. it is only right! *tr

While driving at low speed the power steering became inoperative and the esc lamp lit as well as the service power steering message displayed. similar conditions as described in the nhtsa campaign number 14v153000, power steering assist lost. 2008-2009 malibu's are affected and my vehicle is in the next my using the same part, which was used on malibu's between 2004 and 2010. *tr

On several occasions, while driving or upon starting my vehicle, i lost power steering capabilities. on one of these occasions, i was traveling during a ice storm, thankfully i was going straight and did not need to make any turns and the traffic was light, i was able to safely home. this problem makes steering nearly impossible when it goes out. my vehicle is currently in the shop with the diagnosis of power steering motor (module) failure. in researching, i find that several recalls have been issued for this type of problem with other malibu(s) (up to the 2009 model), but not my 2010. the cost to fix this is approximately $750.00, i am hopeful that my warranty covers this as there is no recall to do so. i believe that gm should be responsible for this as this seems to be a problem throughout the malibu line regardless of year. *tr

My power steering torque sensor went out while driving my vehicle. have had random issues going back years with the power steering but never while driving. usually only when starting the car. gm said, even though it's the same exact part number listed in the 2005-2009 chevy malibu recall, my 2010 was not part of the warranty. repairs were quoted at $1800-2200. gm seems unwilling to fix the defective part they put in my car. this type of ignorance landed gms ceos [xxx] on capital hill just over a year ago. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering warning lamp illuminated and the vehicle stalled with no warning several times. also, the contact stated that the rear break light illuminated frequently when the brake pedal was not applied. the contact had to tap the brake pedal to get the light to turn off. the contact was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 14e044000 (steering) and 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control , exterior lighting , service brakes, hydraulic , vehicle speed control). the vehicle was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 171,000.

On 17 january 2015 i was driving home down a somewhat winding road and all of a sudden the power steering on my vehicle failed coming into a turn almost causing me to go into a ditch. the failure was sudden and i had to apply my brakes to avoid driving off the road. i have read around on forums and though many of the recalls for other models and same models of different years that have a similar steering setup. i believe it is the malibus of the model year 04, 05, 06, 08, and 09 that are covered by the recall whereas my vehicle is a 2010 which is not covered. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel was difficult to maneuver. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the torque input sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 78,000.

I was driving on the expressway in the far left lane. i heard chimes. power steering. service ecs message scrolled across. the traction indicator icon came on. i took the car to phillips chevy in lansing. i was charged $119.75 diagnostic test fee. the steering column must be replaced. i asked if this was a recall item with malibu. there are recalls for other years but not the 2010. to fix it i was given an estimate of $724 plus tax. *tr

I had a loss of power steering "service esc" light also came on. car was completely manual steering at that point, extremely hard to control. same problem with the steering described in the recall 14e044. also, part made by the same company that the recall involved. i purchased a new power steering sensor and had it installed by a certified mechanic. the power steering still did not operate properly, but this time when the car was turned on, the steering wheel would turn all the way to the right, on its own. when i brought it back to the dealer, they said that the warranty was voided on the product. i have been told by several gm service departments that this is a faulty part and that often times several have to be installed before you find one that works. also, i was not provided a written warranty from the dealership for the part, but the parts department told that there was a warranty on it. however, no details as to stipulations were provided. i am under the impression that gm and dealerships are aware of this defective part and instead of addressing the issue, they are trying to put the responsibility off on the car owner. the dealership was dishonest in its practices in dealing with this defective part. *tr

While driving, the electronic power steering went out, making it unable to steer the car. the steering torque sensor was replaced at a cost of $400. our 2004 chevy malibu had the exact thing happen to it. it was covered by a gm recall. however with the 2010, there hasn't been a recall. there should be a recall. this was a dangerous, life-threatening situation. *tr
