I purchased this car in december 2018, it had 123,500 miles on it. this morning as my son was proceeding through a left turn through an intersection, the steering suddenly locked up, warning light "service ecs" came on, and he had no power steering! we turned the car off for about five minutes and restarted the engine, and everything was working again, so we were able to get it to a safe spot to park. this was a horribly dangerous situation that i've seen multiple online reports about today in my search for some answers.
I put brand new rims and tires on the 2010 malibu and received an alignment. about 20 minutes later while driving on the highway my steering wheel locked up and my esc power steering lights came on! fortunately i was not injured.
I was driving and my power steering light came on the dashboard and the steering wheel became hard to maneuver. i turned off the vehicle and it was drivable, but again the steering wheel became hard to drive.

Car has been having all the problems since i got it , and now just by doing research i seen that they had a lot of these cars recalled
When i first turn the car on it will flash service esc and power steering wheel also flash at that point i have no power steering, and then i will turn the car off and turn it back on and i have power steering there is no flashing of esc or power steering. the steering wheel will shake while stationary. in the last year i have replaced all four turn signals at least twice and both headlights at least twice. when i turn on the car the headlights will flash and then one will go out while the other one stays on driving down the road i don't hit any bumps or potholes or anything like that and the head light will come on, at that point it stayed on for one day and then it went back out again. my third brake light will work off and on, more off then on. my rear defrosters do not work at all and the control on the driver seat does not work either. within the last month we have replaced the battery and cables for the car and was told that that should fix all the electrical problems and it did not. i have 2 videos of what the car does but cannot upload on here.

Just bought a used 2010 malibu with 2.4l engine for my teenage daughter. after several days, when trying to teach her parallel parking, the steering began locking up and steering system warning is displayed. when it locks up, the wheel cannot be moved at all, regardless of vehicle speed. steering control only returns after shutting the engine down, waiting a few seconds, then starting it back up. the car has done this several times over the last week. it hasn't happened on the highway yet, but after checking into this online, i find that it is a very common complaint with the electric power steering system installed on this and other gm vehicles. i also found that it reportedly happens on highway, and when it does, the steering wheel is locked in whatever position it was in when the problem occurred, leaving the driver absolutely no control of the vehicle. needless to say, this is a very dangerous situation, and i find it very hard to believe that a recall has not been issued in regards to this. it has reportedly been a common complaint with the malibu with 2.4l engine for several years. if there is not currently a federal investigation in progress regarding this complaint, there needs to be asap. i'm thinking right now that i shouldn't let my daughter drive the car. it's scary.
My power steering stopped working while driving. the steering got really heavy, and trying to turn the wheel felt notchy, like the power steering motor was fighting me. i was pulling into a parking lot when this happened. a triangle shaped yellow warning light came up. i think the warning message below it was esc traction or something like that. after turning off the car and letting it rest for 1.5 hours, the car started and the steering worked like normal. no warning light, message, or issues. i don't know when this will happen again. i see lots of people have this issue with the same model year malibu. this car has 85k miles on it.
Power steering locks when driving and i have no control of the steering wheel
While driving esc light came on power steering issue displayed and power steering failed. stopped and turned car off; upon restart no issue.
Power steering goes in and out. etc light comes on and flashes power steering failure. upon reading, gm issued a recall for this but our dealer has no recall information on this. safety issue, could lead to a crash
Power steering suddenly went out while driving, i made it home safely then the next day car drove as if nothing was wrong, power steering functioned normally. the following day power steering went out again as i was turning the corner. i turned the car off and then restarted, then it drove fine until i pulled in my driveway the power steering went out again. for the last 4 days it has been going in and out at will.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while attempting to drive the vehicle, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact also stated that the vehicle jerked left to right. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the electric power steering failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 89,000.
Service esc error message and then power steering message began flashing and i couldn't turn the wheel. steering goes into manual mode and i am unable to move my steering wheel. this happens many times while i was driving, i had to pull over, place it in park, turn it off, then restart the car. i have to do this about every 5 to 15 minutes. this always happens while car is in motion
While driving the esc, traction and power steering lights came on and then the power steering went out. for a short time i could stop, turn the car off and it would work again . now there is no power steering and of course all the lights are still on. this year model was listed as one of the recalls for the power steering but not my vin number. i have had this car in the shop for a recall on the lighting system that was faulty which in the recall it did say that it could cause the power steering to go out as well as the esc and traction. the chev dealership said that this was not correct. the estimate i was given was about $1500.00 to fix the problem.
My 2010 chevy malibu is losing power steering during normal driving conditions, the service ecm is displaying and then the power steering failure is on the dash. i can get the power steering to turn back on once i turn the engine off and back on again but it continues to shut off.
Driving and my electric power steering went out causing the car hard to control . 2.4 fur cylinder chevy malibu 2010 the dashboard lit up power steering loss
I found a complaint before about the power steering going out on my car. today is october 17th 2018 the incident happened at about 5:50 in the morning my wife was driving to work in the vehicle on the freeway and the power steering went out again and the wheel locked up and turnt the car onto a construction she was able to stop the vehicle. she tells me that every light came on and started flashing then it went away and said ese, no power steering, service, no traction. she turned off the vehicle and started it back up and everything worked again, this has happened more than one time and each year is happening more and more.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the electric power steering failed and the power steering warning indicator failed to illuminate. the contact also heard a clicking noise when the steering wheel was turned in either direction. the contact had to constantly maneuver the steering wheel, which was extremely tight when turning it in either direction. the dealer (ross downing chevrolet, 600 s morrison blvd, hammond, la 70403, 866-206-4720) indicated that the vehicle was serviced in 2014 per nhtsa campaign number: 14e044000 (steering). since the vehicle was not included in any current recalls, the dealer did not offer to diagnose the vehicle. an independent repair facility replaced the power steering pump, but the clicking noise and steering wheel failures continued. the manufacturer issued one recall for this year, make, and model vehicle with 11 tsbs for the steering. the manufacturer was notified. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 143,497.
While driving my car on the highway out of nowhere power engine reduced would come up on the dash and would not accelerate and transmission and traction warning lights would show on dash as well also power steering show on dash and the car jerk a little and the speedometer and fuel hand wouldn't move
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving and making turns, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver and shook violently. there was no warning indicator illuminated. in addition, while driving approximately 40 mph and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle started to decelerate and the temperature gauge increased. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was not notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 100,615.
My steering wheel locked while i was driving and i was unable to steer while on the freeway.
Power steering locked when driving onto ramp. cars almost hit me , i was able to go to curb. cars going fast and almost hit!
My 2010 malibu has started to have all sorts of steering issues, i have had a lot of the same issues others have had, my esc and power steering light came on, i shut the car off and restarted it and it worked like "normal" but since then there is a lot of play in the steering wheel, and even if you are sitting still, the wheel itself makes a sudden little jerk type movement. is there anything out there to fix these issues???
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving 65 mph, the esc warning indicator illuminated and the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the vehicle was taken to suburban chevrolet (12475 plaza drive, eden prairie, mn 55344) where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was approximately 99,000. *tt
May 4th 2018 i was driving and steering wheel started to shake and tighten up, i pulled over and put on hazard lights , it felt if i had a flat tire , power steering light came on, i shut car off that turned back on proceeded to pull on to highway and car seemed fine again , i am scared to drive.
Power steering completely goes out
We got this 2010 malibu about a month ago. on april 12, 2010 i had a sudden loss of power steering while driving on high way 9. i pulled over on the shoulder and turned it off and waited about 25 minutes and when i started the engine it goes back to normal. few days ago we had the same problem while exiting the freeway. again, we had to park it on the shoulder and when we turned it off and turned it back on it would go back to normal. we took it to the closest shop and the mechanics there checked it and found nothing wrong with it. they said all chevys with traction control are like that, especially when it's pouring rain or when it's too cold, and i believe they were telling the truth because i usually have all these esc/traction and steering wheel warning lights only when it's raiining or too cold. please help us as we have kids and don't want to take the risk. thanks!
I left my driveway early in the morning. after going down my residential street, i went to turn my car to the left and the power steering went out. on my dash the meassage "esc service power steering appeared". after turning my car off for a few seconds, i turned the car back on and the power steering was back to normal, and the message was gone from my dash. after doing some research i see there has been a recall on the chevrolet malibu for this problem, however my car's vin is not included in it even though it is having the same problem with power steering.
Sometimes when i start the car the power steering sign will be on the dash, it will also say service the esc =. there will be no power steering. i can turn off for awhile and re start and the problem will go away. there is also a shacking in steering wheel while i'm in park or stopped at a light
2010 chevrolet malibu power steering shimmy started yesterday. today power steering quit. after restart power steering works with hands off shimmy again.
I was driving down the road and the power steering light came on along with esc, and service esc. i could not steer my car as usual. i shut off the car and when i started it back up it was fine.
Fist occurred approx. 4yrs ago the steering will lock while car is in motion traction light pops on and steering will lock cannot move the only recourse is to place in park, turn off and back on to free steering. i reported to maundy chevrolet dealership i was there is not a check engine light on so there is nothing that can be done. this continue to happen throughout the 4yrs maybe twice a year until ending of 2017 when it became more consistent. after march of 2018 after it happened 3 time within that month, once with my granddaughter in the car, i took my vehicle to pep boys for a tune up {please note preventance maintenence work is being constantly done all this while } spoke to the electrician that was performing the tune up, and explained what the issue was, he did preformed a tune up and ran a diagnose and found a c0561 code in the system. he advise me to return to the dealership with this information which i did, along with the paperwork from pep boys. ironically despite the check engine light not being on mundy chevrolet " found the issue" which amounted to $1400.00 in repair work. { again please note i have been taken my car into the dealership to have varying maintenance work done} i contacted gm, i was assigned a case number and a senior case advisor by the name of destiny, despite several calls and voice mail, i am yet to receive a call from destiny. gm has shown no interest in an issue that is life threating. imagine your steering basically going "dead" while the car is in motion. i am lucky to still be alive. this has happen on city street, while in motion particularly on turns.
Chevrolet malibu 2010 4 cylinder electric power steering having intermittent power steering issues both while stationary and moving in other words at times during startup it will be functional and sometimes non-functional same while moving. supposedly this vehicle is not part of a power steering recall that was issued in 2014 although it appears to have the same mechanical issues. no correlation to speed steering or any other notable variable that i could see.
For the last three days my 2010 malibu is experiencing a problem with the steering. every time i turn my car on it says service esc and my steering is super hard to work with. i can't steer my car at all. i have to shut my car off and reset the engine until the service esc goes away. i was driving home from work today and it went off while i was driving and i couldn't steer my car at all. i had to pull over which was tough because there was some traffic. i've been looking all over online and most people say there is a recall for the steering column but my car's vin isn't popping up for any of the recalls. which is crazy because my car is doing the same stuff the people who got it fixed for free.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. on several occasions, after the vehicle was started, the service power steering and the esc off indicators illuminated. afterwards, a complete loss of power steering ability caused the steering wheel to seize. on multiple occasions, the contact had to shut the vehicle off to reset the engine. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 182,000.
There are alerts about the power steering and the service esc on the dash when i turn on the car. sometimes when i start the car the steering wheel shakes and jerks, without my control. this affects my driving abilities and is a clear danger. the steering wheel shakes the most when i am stopped, but it shakes the entire time i am driving the vehicle. the other times i start the car, the power steering alerts come on and there is no power steering and i have to steer manually. this problem started slowly; originally the wheel shook but not as violently as it does now. over the past couple weeks it has gotten worse, and recently the power steering has gone out when i've started. before i could just restart my car and the power steering would work, but now the more i restart the car the less likely the steering will work properly. this problem started in january but intensified in march.
I was driving in my neighborhood, when suddenly, my power steering failed. i had to use a great deal more effort to steer the car to avoid parked cars, as well oncoming traffic. i had a couple near misses, but made it to my driveway. since, i have had the same power steering fail 4 times while driving in neighborhood and on the highway each timehighway. fortunately, i avoided contact with other cars while moving, but only due to my experienced driving. if my kids were driving this car, they would have had an accident! now, i learned gm had an effective recall for my model, but for earlier years up through 2009. hence, they have closed said recall and left me with nary an option. i am turning to you to see if a renewed recall can be reopened!
Takata recall while driving on a city street my steering locked up and light came on the steering would not work ivoq n n n n 35 v n n
Takata recall. when car is running i have steering failure. hard to turn the steering wheel. almost had an accident. alarm sounds and on dash it says power steering and esc off and service esc.
While driving on busy highway the power steering light and esc light comes on and there was loss of power steering. it became very hard for my daughter to turn the wheel. after stopping and turning off engine, she restarted and got the power steering back but the steering wheel vibrated and moved on it's own. later that week the power steering went out while driving down the highway and it has not come back. i'm thankful she wasn't hurt and the numbers of the exact same complaint on this car is getting ridiculous. the manufacturers need to step up and do the right thing.
Power steering warning indicator and other indication on hard. manual says contact dealer. dealer says this vin not in recall which was issued.
