Problems with 2009 Chevrolet Malibu ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL

On average, the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu starts to “feel” problems with the ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL and its various aspects after 117 264 miles.

Recently reported ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL problems on 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

Upon startup of the vehicle, the yellow warning lamp illuminates with the messages "service esc" followed by "esc off". this is concurrent with loss of power to the electronic power steering making low-speed turns incredibly difficult, but still manageable. putting the car in park, turning the ignition off and then restarting the engine mitigates this issue. *tr

I went to start my car and the service esc light flashed along with the power steering light. i turned the ignition off and back on again. this seemed to solve the problem temporarily. as a few days went by, the problem was more frequent. currently, the vehicle will start with the error lights flashing more times than it will not. the vehicle can be driven. however, it is very difficuly to turn, especially at slow speeds. *tr

I was driving just a few blocks from my house when i stopped at a red light. the light turned green so i went to go. my car then flashed a service esc warning, then it flashed esc off & then flashed engine power reduced. my check engine light also came on and has stayed on. my car wouldn't even go over 10mph, and was shaking so bad i thought i was going to lose control of the vehicle. thank god i didn't make it out of town. i just recently had my car at the chevrolet auto shop to have my transmission completely rebuilt and for the brake light malfunction recall. then my car ended up back in the shop apparently for a bad cadillac converter, which i think really was this problem all along. i have only had this car for a year, and i am beyond disgusted with all the problems. i don't think i will be purchasing another vehicle from chevrolet, as they just aren't good cars apparently. side note: i take really good care of my vehicle and do all the normal service maint. on time etc so there is no excuse for this. it's just a bad car! i have a 2009 chevy malibu. *tr

While driving into a parking lot my power steering suddenly quit working and the service esc and power steering lights started flashing. i looked up my vin to see if it qualified for a recall but it didn't fit under recall #14v153000 even though my car was built the same year and same model and is experiencing the same issues as described in this recall. this recall needs to be expanded to include more vehicle experiencing the same problem. *tr

I was driving east on colonel glenn highway in dayton oh, when the electric power steering went out. it caused the car to jerk and caused my wife's neck to strain. i came home and checked and learned that chevrolet had a recall notice for some 2009 malibus, but our car was not included. it seems strange that chevrolet did not include all 2009 malibus. *tr

Power steering will quit intermittently and will esc light will come on. steering is very difficult and could result in a accident. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while making a left turn at 4 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate. the contact stated that esc off was displayed across the message board. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000( electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). the failure mileage was 152,000.

While driving down the highway at 60mph at approximately 8pm on feb 26, my steering wheel began to vibrate and then the driver info display panel showed power steering and service esc. i then lost all power steering in my vehicle. this made it extremely difficult to steer and operate safely. luckily i was able to get the vehicle off the highway safely. the next day, i took the vehicle to my dealer and was told that the power steering torque sensor needs replaced. i did research and discovered that a similar recall was issued for the electronic power steering on 2009 malibu's , but my vin was not included in the recall. i am unclear as to why. i contacted gm/chevrolet and was told i am not covered and am now holding a bill for almost $600. i was shocked to learn that my vehicle was not covered. additionally, i was not even aware that my vehicle did not have hydraulic power steering. *tr

Sudden loss of power steering, nearly caused a wreck in parking lot. impossible to steer car due to resistance in wheel. *tr

Vehicle loss power steering and had to be manually steered to shoulder. alarm indication: "power steering, esc sensor needs service". this condition keeps repeating itself over and over and over again. the fault and condition can be temporarily cleared by turning off ignition and re-starting ignition. the steering wheel rocks back in forth in idle and feels like the power steering is pulsating. my vin somehow is not included in earlier recall but is exhibiting exactly the same issues as those recalled in same production year!!!!???? *tr

I was driving home with my children in the car and my electrical power steering locked up and nearly caused an accident. happy that everyone made it home safely, i then tried to find probably causes in to what is the cause and what i can do. i saw nothing but gm recalls for 2008 -2009 chevy malibu's that are having this problem. no one can help but the dealership, so i drove down to the dealership on a saturday, and asked if anyone can take a look at the issue, and the gentleman was short and rude, as if he did not want to help me. i practically had to beg for them to look at my vehicle. so i patiently waited for 3 and a half hours in the lobby. to find out that the power steering module is going bad. that it will cost 480.00. the guy charged me 95.00 just for a diagnostic, and i didn't get a warning that this will be a charge, on top of it he wanted to charge me 800.00 to fix other things on my vehicle, when my main concern was the power steering. i felt taken advantage of, and no one explained to me as to why this took place. i am thinking it must be apart of the recall. so i sent a letter to corporate about this experience. i spoke with an agent and a senior adviser. i cannot wait years later for them to decide that they missed a vehicle. so they did try to give me options to see if they can help with the cost due to the inconvenience i've been through with my children and how i was treated at the terry cullen chevy dealership in georgia. hopefully they can cover half the cost so i can get this fix. i am currently driving dangerously on the road to get to and from work, and i have no other options nor extra money to get this fixed right now. i just do not understand how i can have the same issue in my vehicle and everyone else has a recall on theirs. is this a normal ware and tare issue. *tr

Abrupt power-steering failure. the steering wheel turns and jerks (shutters back and forth) on its own while the car is at rest at a stoplight or stop sign. took to chevy dealer and they advised me there is a recall for this issue but my vin and part# are not included as of now. dealer told me it is due to faulty positioning sensor part # 23232310 sensor ki. *tr

While driving, power steering failed, heard a ding and a dash warning came on saying power steering/esc off. i took it to chevrolet to have a brake recall performed and they looked at it saying it was the torque sensor. this item is a recall for over 1.5 million chevrolets but somehow, mine is the exception. i have fought with chevy over this and they refuse to fix it. poor service. poor company. *tr

For the past several weeks upon starting my 2009 chevy malibu lt ... a light comes on the dashboard and says service esc and power steering. at this time i lose all power assist to my car and steering is very hard. when i restart my car it resets itself and then i am able to steer again unless it trips again. this is super dangerous and appears to be getting worse and worse. it is the same recall listed for several other malibu's and gm cars but not my year. my year needs to be included in this recall also. i took it to the dealership and they wanted $600 to fix it and diagnosed it as the sensor in the steering wheel shorting out. i have a child and i'm literally afraid to drive my car anymore with all of the serious recalls going on i do not want to lose control this is ridiculous and i hope it's fixed soon. it's terrible to pay so much for a car that you don't even feel safe driving. *tr

Friday morning at 8am, attempted to backup car from parking space and go to work but had the hardest time turning the wheel and googled information and found recall id # 105304 for steering issue recalled july 21, 2014 & found recall id # 103669 for esc recall date may 14,2014, i've contacted chevrolet at 800.680.7031 and had case#: [xxx] initiated for steering and had a rep call gmc royal to service my car but found out that they wouldn't fix my steering or esc issue since my vin# personally hasn't been notified as a mass recall but they will fix two other issues affecting a lamp and a clamp, if i could have someone research this in depth i would greatly appreciate it as i would hate to have to pay money to have the car fixed and they send a recall letter for the same situation years later and then i'm stuck out of pocket for the prior services the main issue i experience is with the steering out of no where the car states power steering in green letters and freezes and i'm sometimes stuck in the middle of the street and can only move if i keep restarting the car and with the esc, the car states esc disabled which affects steering and no traction and messes with the pedals, if i can have these issues escalated since they are the same issue as those other recalls i would greatly appreciate it!!! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

As i was driving my steering wheel start shaking out of no were and stop at the store and started it back and my steering is locked up and hard to turn. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 30 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the contact had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to steer the vehicle. the service electronic stability control (esc) was displayed across the message board. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the steering wheel torque input sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 77,457.

Tl* the contact owns 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the steering wheel seized as the traction control and electronic stability control warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure was 110,000.

While driving down the highway with my son going at rates of 70mph. my power steering gave out and i was unable to turn wheel. trying to find out what was wrong i found out the power steering torque sensor gave out. i contacted gm and my local dealer about incident because there has been reports of this happening on several of this year and model car. other gm cars have put recall on the power steering, not mine. i contacted dealer because they have me a price of $500-$1200. i contacted gm they refuse to help me at all. this is a safety issue and i feel unsafe driving my own car. i purchased the sensor on my own because the dealer mark up was double of what the part cost. gm refuses to help and i am now renting a car waiting for this to be fixed to sell it. i was with my young child on the highway when it locked up. please help! *tr

Driving vehicle around a curve when esc light came on and lost power steering. parked car over night and waited for dealership to open. after research, realized the vehicle has a recall number of 14v252 which may root of the problem. when i turned on the vehicle to take to the dealer, the light was off and power steering returned. while driving to the dealer, light came on and lost power steering again. *tr

I was driving at around 45mph and suddenly lost power steering assistance, making it difficult to steer, and increasing the risk of a crash. the problem persists. there have already been multiple recalls for this issue but my car is not included in these recalls. *tr

Loss of electric power steering assist. has happened literally dozens of times. can be driving or at a stop and the power steering assist will go away, the dash will chime, and messages will be displayed saying "power steering", "service esc", and "esc off". after that point there will be no steering assist until the vehicle is restarted. seems to be the same symptoms as cars affected by the power steering recall, however my vin shows that my car is not part of the recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact received a recall repair for nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electrical system, exterior lighting, vehicle speed control, electronic stability control). two years later, the brake lights failed to illuminate when applied, but would illuminate when the brake pedal was not depressed. the service esc and traction control warning indicators flashed. also, the cruise control shut off and operated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and repair. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available. updated 11/01/17*lj *cn

Pulled into parking lot and as i was pulling into parking place my steering went out, traction control light came on and service esc message flashed across the screen. a power steering message also flashed acrossed the screen. this has happened to me alot and i am afraid it will go out when i am on a busy highway and i will be killed. my car has the electric power steering and i have read many other complaints about the same issue and there should be a recall before someone is injured or killed. *tr

The wheel turn triggers the esc to turn off. sometimes mid parking lot. sometime mid highway on ramp at 45 mph. some days i can go without having any issues. other days i can't get the steering to come on. worst is when i am in mid turn and it triggers. very frustrating and annoying to just buy a car and have it be so unsafe that we can barely use it. called dealer but was told i would have to pay $109 to diagnose and service if needed to replace would run about $800. this car has been a nightmare with cost and issues. i had to pay $90 bucks to change a $20 front head light bulb because the bumper has to be removed to do this. locks don't work. *tr

While driving my 2009 chevy malibu, i abruptly got a warning message on my dash board which contained the phrase engine power reduction at which time my car completely shut off in the middle of a busy highway. the car had no response even though all the battery operated items were working the car still would not turn over. after further research it has come to my attention that a large group of individuals have had this happen and this error message come up.

While making a left turn at less than 20mph, vehicle lost traction, causing car to skid and leave roadway, and subsequently hit a cement culvert. earlier the same week, the rear brake lights were intermittently illuminating when the brakes were not being applied. vehicle required towing and repairs. passenger in vehicle suffered lower back injury. two weeks after accident, owner received recall 13036 notification. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control); however, the parts needed for the repair were unavailable. the dealer could not provide an estimated date for arrival. the manufacturer was notified. the contact had not experienced a failure.

2009 chevrolet malibu. consumer writes in regards to body control module connection system recall reimbursement. *smd the consumer stated in june 2014, the vehicle wasn't running smoothly. it seemed to exhibit a jerk motion and felt as though it was going to stall. the esc light would illuminate and then go out. the dealer made some repairs on june on june 27, 2014. after the repairs were made, the consumer received a recall letter. however, the parts were not available. gm informed the consumer, the repairs were not covered by the recall. according to the invoice, the fuel injector wire was replaced. recall # 14v252000 updated 12/30/15.*jb

I was coming to a stop and because my brake lights do not illuminate when brakes are applied, the person behind me nearly hit me. this was just the first of seven near collisions. i rarely drive my car now because of the overwhelming feeling of danger when i do drive it. every time i get in to my car to go somewhere, i get in with the thought of i may never see my husband or children again. it is an awful stress. gm has done nothing to help me except tell me they understand. *tr

After filing two complaints with you, and receiving a recall alert from you, i am being told by gm that my vehicle, a 2009 malibu built between the years specified in your recall notice, is not included in the recall you alerted me about. how is this possible? the referenced recall # 14v252000, as he experienced the same malfunction, as described in the recall. the consumer has invoices, that date bate to 2011, where he had to take the vehicle, back to the dealer several times, for an inoperable cruise control and esc lighting illuminating. updated 07/16/14

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and there was a delay in response. in addition, the esc active warning light illuminated. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). the approximate failure mileage was 135,000. the vin was unavailable.

When driving, service esc and service traction show up on dash. when that appears the brake lights come on without applying brake and when brake is applied the brake lights don't come on. i spoke to chevrolet and they said it was under recall but i had to take it into a dealer and have it checked to make sure that was the problem at a cost to me and anyway they can't fix it because they don't have the parts. so what are they waiting for? i am afraid to drive it and it is my young daughters car she drives to school. i don't want her to drive it but it is the only means of transportation for her. this is ridiculous knowing that it is recalled an nothing to be done about it. until when, its to late or someone gets hurt. *tr

Beginning on april 15, 2014 my car flashes esc off, service esc, service traction. this happens often and it turns off the traction control in my car and causes the cruise control to cease function. *tr

When driving the alert will sound alerting that engine power has been reduced. the electronic stability control is then turned off and traction control is lost. when the accelerator is pushed it hesitates before accelerating. *tr

My power steering and service esc light would come on. my steering wheel would lock up. gm stated they would not reimburse me for my issue even though there is an recall out for the same issue. *tr

While driving the elec. stability control light came on and steering became difficult due to the power steering assist motor giving out. when this happen, the steering wheel would inadvertently move back & forth. the sensor in the motor and in the lower steering column both went out. this was an extremely expensive repair not to mention that i was traveling down a busy interstate and could had a severe accident. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that after igniting the vehicle, the electronic stability control warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the contact was made aware of nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering) however, the vin was not included. the failure mileage was 97,820.

I was driving and my esc light came on and i had a difficult time steering my car in the worse traffic i could be in. i was lucky enough i got off the side of the road before i hit someone and put it in a ditch. also, lucky enough it was me driving and not my [xxx] year old daughter. i called the dealer and they got me right in to get it fixed, but i had to pay for it out of my own pocket. however, when i contacted gm i was told i would be reimbursed for this and i would get a letter as of april 28th. i noticed it was moved to may 28th and as of today i have still yet to be notified? does someone have to be injured or killed to get an actual response from someone? updated 1/9/2015 *js parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Esc and traction control would not engage. it stated it needed servicing an dash info center. took car to dealer and first they could not find the problem. after 4 hours they call and said the front wheel hub had to be replaced. code # c0040, right front hub was dropping signal.. this was done at a cost of $636.70 to me. a car with 16,000 miles, don't think this should happen. just received a recall notice on this car from gm, so far i have not been notified of any fix for this recall./ recall # 13036. i feel gm owes me some money for this repair. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the anti lock brake system and the electronic stability control warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the bcm wiring harness needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic , vehicle speed control). the contact stated that after the repairs, it was discovered that the brake lights failed to illuminate when the brake pedal was depressed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 98,000.

Re-occurrence of a prior complaint. driving my vehicle on a local highway when the service traction and service esc displays came on. car began to sputter as though it were going to stall. coasted to the side of the highway, and after idling for a minute the displays returned to normal. after driving about 2 miles further, it happened again. it continued to happen throughout the rest of my drive. the next day, it ran fine for about 10 miles or so, and then began stalling again and began to lose some braking and steering. last time this issue occurred, the brake lights also locked on leaving the drivers behind me thinking that i was braking. last time these alerts were displayed my vehicle died completely and had to be serviced. now, it seems to be progressing towards the same result. gm will not acknowledge that there is an issue, but hundreds of malibu and hhr owners since 2008 seem to disagree. i once again contacted the dealership that gave me the explanation of it requiring hundreds of dollars to diagnose. seeing that this has been occurring for at least 5 years, i would imagine that gm is aware that there is an issue. unfortunately, it always seems that it takes the death of several drivers before there is a response. one driver in a printed chat with a gm rep stated that the issue caused his vehicle to crash due to the loss of abs and power steering, and his airbag failed to deploy. isn't a loss of braking, steering, air bag, brake lights and acceleration a safety concern? *tr

While driving at 70 mph with cruise control engaged, the third brake light in the rear window would randomly come on causing the cruise control to shut off. soon after this happens i get warnings on the dash to service the ecs and traction control system. it has been getting gradually worse and with the brake light activating, could cause drivers behind me to think i am stopping when i am not. this problem was mentioned in an article in usa today a couple of weeks ago, that gm will be issuing a recall for. *tr

My wife was driving and the "service esc / service traction" came on, on my 2009 chevy malibu. there was a slight roughness on the engine. we took it to the dealer and they said they could not find any problem withthe vehicle and we paid the diagnostic fee. it has appeared several times after that but not often. i called chevrolet about it and they said that there is no recall on my vehicle. i saw a recall ( recall id 103629) on electronic stability control for 2009 chevy malibu but they said my vehicle was not included on the recall list. my main concern is the safety of my family and my wife. i have read several concerns of people who own this vehicles and what happened with them. *tr

While driving the vehicle, the service light came on for esc/traction control and also my brake lights came on while my foot was on accelerator, i applied the brake and the brake light turned off, but when i accelerated again the brake light came back on after a few seconds. on different occasions while driving on the freeway the same thing happened and i was unable to engage the cruise control. when i turn off the car and restart it, the service light turns off but only momentarily. it eventually comes back on. extremely irritating, inconvenient, and dangerous! *tr

2009 malibu brake lights stay on while driving then when i press my brakes the lights would go off no one knew when i was using my brakes. this was brought to my attention when i was on a major hwy/speed limit 70 mph when all of a sudden traffic was stopping. the cars behind me were coming at a high speed, but luckily the car directly behind me just short of crashing into my rear missed me. . he got out of his car while the traffic was stopped and approached me to let me know i had no break lights and he also noticed that prior to stopping my break lights were on. in the meantime i had warnings pop up on my car service traction/esc service. well of course, my car was taken to a shop where it showed a break switch needed to be replaced and switch brake needed to be calibrated by the dealership. the car was taken to the dealership and the break switch failed when they performed brake position calibration. the gentlemen said that the switch could be bad even thou it was a new one that was purchased from the dealership. they replaced it again and re-calibrated and afterwards said everything works well. within two weeks the problem with breaks are still there. there is a major problem we have with the 2009 malibu. i?m just lucky i?m still alive. what upsets me the most is the problem is there, but dealerships want to keep replacing parts and charging you $$$$ for something that needs to be recalled before someone gets killed! *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving at 30 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from the front passenger side head lamp. in addition, both the passenger and driver side high and low beam head lamps failed to illuminate. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the wiring harness and the head lamp assembly needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the contact also stated that while at a stop light, "service esc, service traction. esc off" was displayed across the message board. the esc warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who was unable to diagnose or repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). the failure mileage was unknown.

Esc light stays on has been replaced 3 times. causes traction control not to work properly also brake lights fail to work or will stay on and or stay off. have reported to chevy dealer in traver city michigan they say nothing is wrong.. but something is wrong ... or not right i never know if my tail lights or brake lights are going to work and traction control... *tr

Hello, my car's service traction and service esc light turns on intermittently. the brake lights behave in the opposite way, i.e. they stay on during normal driving, turn off when i press on the brake pedal, and turn back on when i release the brake. the cruise control does not work whenever this happens. i do not experience anything different while driving and i believe this is a sensor/circuitry issue. i read through the forums and news websites and found that this is a common problem in a lot of chevy vehicles. there is a tsb on this issue and recalls for a few cars. this is a serious issue as it might lead to accidents when someone driving behind my car sees that the brake light turns off when i press the brake pedal. i would like gm/chevrolet lo help me out here and fix this issue without making me pay for it but they have not responded positively. the dealership charges $110 just for doing simple diagnostics. but this issue is something pretty common to a lot of chevrolet cars and is not a wear related issue. gm or chevrolet should take responsibility to fix the issue. my car is out of 3-year warranty but is still within 5-year warranty (bumper-to-bumper). i hope that an action will be taken and my car will be repaired and/or i will be reimbursed for the repair expense. i found many articles on this issue and a few of them are copied below. Driving on a stretch of highway at 55mph, my service traction and service esc lights came on. immediately, there was a loss of power steering, braking, and the vehicle began to stall. vehicles behind me started braking. upon guiding my vehicle to the side of the road, it stalled out. when i walked to the rear of the vehicle, i saw that the brake lights were locked in the on position, so drivers behind me would have perceived my vehicle as stopping. after a few minutes i was able to restart the vehicle, but it still was very sluggish and the brake lights remained on. i contacted a local dealership and they said to bring it in because it could be caused by many factors and could cost thousands of dollars to diagnose and correct depending upon the issue. i limped my vehicle to a local garage that told me the same thing, but was able to narrow the issue down to a faulty map sensor. my vehicle had to be pushed into a service bay because it no longer would run at all. the map sensor was replaced and the vehicle has run fine. my concern is that there are a lot of these issues with both malibu and hhr owners since 2008 thru 2011, yet it has not been addressed. loss of steering, braking, acceleration and locked brake lights are a safety issue. *tr
