On average, the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu starts to “feel” problems with the ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL and its various aspects after 117 264 miles.

Recently reported ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL problems on 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

While driving down the highway the esc light with service power steering came on and my power steering turned off almost causing me to lose control of the vehicle.

While driving service esc light would come on followed by power steering light. the steering wheel would become difficulty to turn. i would turn into a safe place turn the vehicle off for a minute and the vehicle would work fine. this will happen off and on at different times. the service esc light come on followed by power steering and the steering wheel locking up making it difficult to turn all this will happen while i'm driving scared the day lights out of me every time it would happen. being looking around to see if there are any recalls on the vehicle as far as this goes. will happen every time i'm in motion on city street or interstate very scary as i'm a female driving this car 2009 chevy mailbu ltz 4cyl this has being going on for months now still making payments on the vehicle started purchasing it in 2017 not sure of the exact time it started

I have a 2009 chevy malibu 4 cyl with electric power steering. it is having the same issues as the rest of the recalled malibu's but mine is not on the recall list. the power steering light flashed shuts off the traction control and loses power steering while going down the highway

I have filed complaint before. dealership has been working on it. it has set idle now for 2 weeks. messages service esc -service stab.-brakes lights stay on-rpms escalates and car chugs down. i have had to dealerships 7 times and independent mechanic 1 time. have talked to gm numerous times. finally talked to [xxx]-he had real good advice-trade it off-let some other sucker have the problem-he will allow me $2,500 gm customer loyalty rebate on new car(gm). if you are having the same problem you may call [xxx] at [xxx]. good luck. this has been ongoing for almost 2 years. 4. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Vehicle has electronic stability control lights and the traction control service lights lit on dash. also rear brake lights will come on and or off intermittently. car has been repaired with a new brake light switch and a engine harness in the past year at the dealer. car is well taken care of and should be on the recall list but for some reason it is not.

I made a complaint on around l/17/17 complaining about my car have service esc service traction and trying to stall out with brake lights being on> since that time it has been at dealership more than being driven. it is there now, making this the 7th trip to dealership and once to independent mechanic. this is a common problem with malibu and needs to be resolved by general motors-not me. you ask for a date when this happened-the space only allows for 1 date. it has been ongoing for over 1 & 1/2 years.

Every time car is driven power steering and esc errors show on display and traction control is turned off. errors show up while driving and also while stationary. there was a recall for this year and model but does not show for my vin.

My 2009 malibu, which i purchased new in 2009: about 1&1/2 years ago it started running irregular, service esc-service traction messages came on car skidding emblem came on. i have had it to dealership where i bought it 3 times-each time they could find nothing wrong-took it to independent mechanic-he told me same thing. about a week ago i called general motors-first person i talked to said to call nhtsa that they couldn't do anything until a recall. called nhtsa told me to call gm again and start a case: i called and talked to [xxx], who was very helpful and contacted another dealership about fixing my car. i took it to them; they replaced the brake lam switch thinking that would fix it-did not. called gm again and wads told to take it back to dealership that there was nothing they could do as far as cost for fixing it was concerned. my car is just sitting idle because i am afraid to drive it more than a few miles-afraid it will stall out in traffic. i have looked this up on the internet hoping to get some information as to what is wrong. there are numerous people who are having this same problem with their malibus. none of the dealerships seem to know what is wrong and owners are stuck with paying to have numerous things replaced that do not fix the problem. it is timer someone took responsibility for this flaw and issue a recall. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

When starting my car the esc light comes on and i lose power steering. if i shut the car off and jiggle the steering wheel and then turn the car back on it usually works fine until i shut the car off again. i took it to a mechanic who checked the error code and it came up "c0545". so now my whole steering column needs to be replaced. why was my car not included in the recall if it's doing the same thing as the ones that were recalled???? i have roughly 133,000 miles on it.

My electronic power steering failed to operate while driving suddenly and without warning. along with this happening, an esc inoperative light is illuminated along with a service power steering message on the instrument display. vehicle steering very hard to operate. have to turn car off and on multiple times to clear message and for some reason the power steering resumes to work. this now is a constant occurrence, to the point that i am unable to rely on this vehicle for safe travels.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving various speeds, the gear automatically changed and the engine stalled. the electronic stability control, service traction, and check engine indicators illuminated. the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road, restarted the engine, and the vehicle returned to normal. the contact also stated that the door locks automatically locked and unlocked while driving. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in a recall. the approximate failure mileage was 47,000.

The power door locks engage and disengage at random. when using the unlock button on the key fob or using the button inside the car, the passenger and rear door looks will partially disengage making it hard/impossible to open the door with out manually pulling the lock tab on the door. the electric stability control and traction control will random engage/disengage or display a service message on the cluster screen. the third break light illuminates at random, not always the break is applied. the radio will display random characters while on or go completely blank.

Esc traction esc power steering light comes on and car bogs down and steering is hard to control. took malibu to dealership 3 times for the same esc problem with no resolution and thousand spent.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the eps warning indicator randomly flashed and the stability traction control warning indicator appeared to be deactivated. the contact stated that the steering wheel was extremely difficult to turn each time the failure occurred. in addition, the vehicle suddenly experienced a drastic loss of power. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 14e044000 (steering) and 14v153000 (steering). the dealer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 231,086.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the esc indicator illuminated. a local mechanic diagnosed that the ebcm module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 61,000.

Vehicle shut off while i was driving on city street to pick up my daughter from school, and has not started since. no traction, service esc and power loss messages appeared on the dash display. the dealer was unable to communicate with the onboard computers.

Contacted local dealership for recall. they informed me it was lready done, but problem still persists. i purchased vehicle from my mother and she said she never had the work done.. power steering keeps going in and out and is a major safety issue

While driving, brake lights will illuminate without depressing them, and brake lights won't illuminate while pressed. opposite of what's supposed to be. this has been intermittent. sometimes brake warning light comes on in dashboard. also the esc light. have an appointment with chevy dealer to repair, but was informed they'll fix if not functioning at time of appointment. it's an intermittent problem.

I bought a 2009 chevy malibu ltz in august 2015. last year my esc light started intermittently coming on. i was told there is a recall for the esc on the 2009 chevy malibu. i have taken to the chevy dealership i bought it at and called another dealership and both told me my vin isn't included in the recall. now the esc light comes on frequently. on 7/11/17 my rpm's fluctuated while i was on the highway and it sounded horrible, it sounds like it's racing (like a motor cycle) when i go above 30-40 mph. a mechanic i know said my vin should be included in the recall. according to everything i have read this issue falls the recall.

Service traction, service electronic stability control, electronic stability control off occurs while sitting and driving. car jerks skips and shakes. hard to pick up speed or go to the next gear, door lock on driver side stop working.

The brake lights would turn on while driving and the rpm tach would rev uncontrollably. when the brake is applied, the light turns off and the esc warning appears on the dash. fixed in 2014 as part of the exterior lighting recall (14v252000). as of the last two months, the problem started up again. first, i went and diagnosed it at a repair shop and it told me the brake position sensor needed to be calibrated. after that was fixed, the problems occurred again and replaced the sensor. after the second time, the problem was still not fixed. after going to another dealership and getting the concern fixed, it is still not fixed.

Brake lights go on while driving. then turn off when you hit the brakes to stop or slow down. esc come on while this is happening. dealer states they fixed the recall but it is still happening. now after warranty they say its the abs module

Recall fix failure - the recall fix was applied by the dealership for the 'brake lights may or may not randomly illuminate' issue, nhtsa action 13005, however it is only temporary. after a few months the identical symptoms occur at the same frequency. no new symptoms are present and no previous symptoms are absent. these include; brake lights illuminating with no pressure on the brake pedal, brake lights turning off when pressure is applied to brake pedal (including holding the brakes at a stop), cruise control failing to activate, traction control turning off, esc turning off, and vehicle gearing down (as low as 3rd gear at 60 mph before intervention) to assist by engine braking. most symptoms occur at standstill as well as city and highway speeds. the dealership's stance is that, once a recall is applied, the ticket is closed and is the vehicle owner's responsibility to cover the cost of further fixes.

Theft system light is on and i'm not able to start my car. the radio still works and all the lights and heater and a/c. i try to start the car a few times and sometimes it take several trys to get the car to start. this has been happening quite a bit

In december of 2014, a chevrolet dealer performed repairs to address nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (i had not experienced any problems related to this issue at the time). recently i have been experiencing the symptoms related to this recall, including the "service esc" and "service traction" messages, the brake pedal requiring extra pressure to get the vehicle out of park, and the disabling of cruise control. i have not had the opportunity to check if the brake lights also exhibit the problem described in the recall. the problem has triggered while i'm braking, as well as when i was at highway speed with the cruise control engaged, without applying the brakes.

There is a recall. chevy is refusing to honor because they state i'm over the mileage they set as acceptable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle jerked when the brake pedal was depressed and stalled as the traction control, electronic stability control, and check engine warning lights illuminated. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuse box was missing some fuses and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the contact stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, service brakes). the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 60,000.

I have a 2009 chevrolet malibu and the service esc light comes on followed by power steering and then there is a sudden power steering lost. chevrolet says it is not their responsibility yet there are thousands of records of the same issue and they will not cover the cost to fix it.vehicle was in motion

My electric steering pump suddenly stop working yesterday while driving on street. two warning messages appeared on eic. " check steering" "esc off check". i have read on many forums, by chevy malibu owners, have complain having same issue. i' m concern for my family safety if this steering pump fails again at greater speed.

While driving the car the service traction/esc light comes on and startes jerking the rpms shoot up to 4000 and makes a rattle noise. when doing this the speed does not change to reflect the rpms. when at a idle the rpms rest at about 2200. the car doesnt fully want to stop when coming to red light or when breaking. i have had the car a diffrent speeds and tends to stall and shack no matter what.

I've had the recall done to ( supposedly ) fix the issue of the service esc and traction control light fixed , but it just came back on again . when it is on i have no brake lights or the brake lights stay on . this is very dangerous and i've almost been in a wreck because of it . also i have been getting a lot of water in my passenger side floor to the point i've taken the back seat out so i can lift the carpet to vacuum it out.

Driving this car loses its power steering. gm states my car is not included in recall even though they installed a defective sensor.

Vehicle in airport parking lot and temp was 29 degrees. started vehicle and proceeded to leave parking lot. power steering warning appeared on dash board. continue diving on interstate for next 15 minutes to reach home. about a half mile before reaching home, service esc appeared on dash. did not lose control o vehicle and vehicle has no been moved since. new years day 2016, no dealer service is open. i understand this is a known issue with the malibu, however my vin # does not appear to be part of the recall. will take to dealership for diagnosis.

Engine power reduced and car cranks but wont start. it also slowed down when that engine power reduced came on almost had an accident and my family was in the car.

While driving my car the traction control light flashes and the service esc light flashes in the dash of my car. my brake light remain on at all time, when i mash the brakes no brake light comes on. the brake light is doing the opposite of what it is supposed to be doing. this occured months after i had recall work done (at a certified gm dealer) under gm recall number 13036 and nhtsa campaign number 14v252000.

As i was drivingdown the street, the power steering/service esc light and message came on my car. it also said esc off. i got pulled into a parkuing lot and turned off my car and restarted it and it worked for a few minutes. after work it did it to me when i started it. i killed it and restarted it and jerked the steering wheel back and forth and it worked for around five minutes. i have read on many forums that this is a known problem with many years of the malibu and other cars. gm has extended the warranty to 100,000 miles but most of them are over that limit. this is a dangerous problem!!!!!

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a dealer for a manufacturer recall concerning nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). the contact was not experiencing any failures before the recall repair was performed by the dealer. the contact stated that the esc and traction control warning lights randomly illuminated. the dealer and the manufacturer indicated that the brake light sensor switch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was taken to a dealer and an independent mechanic for inspection. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.

The brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features. this occurs after we have had the work done that was for gm recall number 13036/nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 multiple times.

Driving at 65 mph on the interstate and esc light, check engine light, and security light came on. the speedometer needle and the fuel guage needle started jumping sporadically and then i lost power for a moment and could not accelerate. had to coast to the side of the road. very dangerous situation. turned the car off and restarted, and it happened numerous more times. had to end up having it towed. it is in the shop now, and they haven't determined what is wrong yet.

One october 5, 2015 owner was driving at or around 35mph when the vehicles, esc, check engine light, and brake dashboard icons came on. then car then lost engine power, and would not accelerate. owner then cruised the car to the side of the road, where turned the key to the off position and then tried to restart it. owner tried turning the key to restart the vehicle multiple times over the course of 15 minutes and the vehicle would not start. finally, the vehicle restarted and the owner was able to drive off the freeway and contacted the gm customer service number to report the incident.

When driving my vehicle the brake lights are currently illuminating without me pressing the brake pedal and not illuminating when i do press the brake pedal (brake light reversal). in addition my electronic stability control (esc) and cruise control turn off. i previously reported this problem to the agency under nhtsa id number 10548365. i had the recall work performed in the summer of 2014. in addition i previously had the brake pedal position sensor replaced prior to that, but it did not fix the problem. the problem has reappeared even though the suggested fix was applied. please note that this problem was originally reported in rhinelander, wi.

While driving on the interstate my steering wheel began to shake and vibrate rapidly. i then heard a ding followed by the messages, "service power steering" "service esc" " esc off". i was able to exit the interstate and get to a gas station before the wheel completely locked up. i turned the car off for about 45 mins and found that when i turned my car on it was "fine." i ended up having it towed. i found out that this is a common issue with this car and my car isn't a part of last year's recall.

While driving my car the traction control light flashes and the service esc light flashes in the dash of my car. my brake light remain on at all time, when i mash the brakes no brake light comes on. the brake light is doing the opposite of what it is suppose to be during. i had the recall done on this car in october 2014 at john donoghue chevrolet in whiteville, nc, 910-642-2400 but i am still having the same problem after the recall have been done on my car. what do i do now. thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the stability, traction, and power steering warning lights illuminated. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the steering wheel was extremely tight and difficult to turn left and right. the vehicle was parked and unable to be driven due to the failure. the vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 14e044000 (steering) and 14v153000 (steering). the approximate failure mileage was 20,000.

There was a recall for the wiring harness related to these problems..rk chevrolet in vineland,nj repaired it supposedly. days after the warranty on socalled repair the problem persisted yet again and i returned to dealership they said there was no problem with it...gave me codes for something else which did not relate to what is wrong...i'm getting nowhere with this and it is not safe to drive this vehicle which is needed for family transportation and work.esc light stays on,traction control stays on,brake lights come on while driving but not when braking.

Bought my 2009 chevy malibu ltz in april 2015 in may 2015 my service esc service traction control lights started to come on and my taillights are lighting up as if on the breaks when i am not.( they come on while i am stoped at a red light have never come on while moving) returned to the dealership where i got my car and the lights were off so they said they could not do anything until the lights were on(the lights reset when i shut my car off). they came on last night went to chevy dealership last night 7/20/2015 and they told me to replace the break pedal switch and we did that but my break lights are still coming on when they want,it looks like there was a recall for this before i got my car and i don't know if it was fixed or not and if it could be fixed again under the recall...... very unhappy about this.

Door locks and windows stopped working in suspect due to some electrical problems. and when i'm on the gas it won't pick up any speed and i think that's due to the cam shaft. and i know im not the only one having the same problems with the same car. it's really becoming a problem

While driving the service esc light came onthe the traction control light came on then check engine light can on with reduce engine power. had to pull over cut car off and back on everything went away except check engine took that to be checked our it came back as a throttle body or loose hose. cut car back on everything was off. went to work started back up everything was fine then at 45 did it again. *tr

While driving at highway speeds around a curve, light application of the brakes to slow down the vehicle, esc activates with a warning lamp and "esc active" message. there is typically no need for stability control to be active and is a persistent problem because the computer over-aggressively tries to compensate for a non existent issue making controlling the vehicle difficult as well as dangerous due to the inability for the driver to safely apply the brakes due to the esc override. *tr

It has happened a couple times....the service ecs and traction control light come on and then the vehicle feels as if it is missing. we pulled into an advanced auto parts and turned the vehicle off...went inside to get someone to put it on the meter and it was fine. almost 2 weeks later it did it again...fearful what would happen if we were on the interstate going at a high rate of speed. wondering if it has something to do with the may recall. even though we had the recall completed it is still acting up. *tr
