Recently reported STEERING problems on 2008 Chevrolet Malibu

Power steering is not working just in the last week. sometimes it works but the steering wheel shakes even when i'm not moving the car. other times it doesnt work at all.

Electric steering goes out while driving. was a recall for this in 2014 for some of the 2008 malibu but dealership say not my vehicle even though that's the problem its having.

My electric locks are locking and unlocking randomly and the power steering goes out with message on dash. there is no powersteering until i turn the car off and back on then last for a undetermined amount of time.

Power steering sensor kit failure, known issue on this gm model and there was a recall for this year model on this issue yet didn't cover this vin number, it is my belief that the recall for this issue wasnt wide enough to include this vin # part replacement p/n 23232310 $708.73

When i start my car, the steering wheel is locked up and a message stating "power steering" comes across the main screen. my vehicle was stationary. the issue only continues to get worse over time, and the current recall for this doesn't seem to cover my vin number or yield an open recall. it is possible the person who had this car before me had the issue fixed and it is now happening again. only after restarting the vehicle multiple times am i able to turn the wheel all the while it shakes back and forth as if there's an issue with the steering column.

I was driving my car and my power steering light came on while on the highway and the wheel became hard to turn

Steering will lock up sometimes it say power steering on warning, sometimes the traction control light comes on i can correct by putting in park shutting off the vehicle and restarting, then it goes back to normal operation - i am worried i might get rear ended if i can't get over in time this has happened several times but most recently three times last week and so far twice this week happens when going into a turn

If i drive real fast whenever it rain it'll say power steering service traction off my car would slid as i pull off from a complete stop . it's hard for my car to turn and it's triggering my check engine light .on the highway wheels and tires shake

When driving the power steering goes out making the vehicle extremely hard to steer. when you turn the car off and turn it back on, it would stop for a short period of time, but would repeat the same problem.

There have been multiple times now where my power steering light will turn on my dashboard, then it turns to manual steering which is very difficult to turn and almost caused me to crash my vehicle when trying to merge off to the shoulder. seems to be more common when going 30 mph or under but has happened when going 75 mph on highway. last time was today when i went to get new set of tires and it locked up on the technician. it will happen at random times and if i restart my car problem seems to go away for awhile.

The steering wheel starts to shake and pulls to the right side. cannot control the car. called gm and explained that there was not a recall. gm was terrible and would not let me speak to a supervisor concerning this issue. i cannot drive the car.

2008 chevy malibu engine shut off in mid drive on city highway during high traffic. my wife and children were in the vehicle the check engine light has displayed and continue to code p0365/6. however the camshaft position sensors, the camshaft position actuators, the altenator and the battery have all been replaced. the issue has upset me due to the fact that it is in line with 2 known concerns and reports that have not been answered by chevy or gm. 1) discussion of battery cables being the cause of the problem (unanswered) 2) gm ignition switch recall feb 2014 (which seems to be very in line with this issue). i have taken the vehicle to the chevy dealership and ofcourse paid for a diagnostic to be told "could not duplicate". it is very concerning to me and hard to believe that this was the first time that these symptoms have been reported and no one knows what could be the source. i was able to find forums and reports on both the battery cables and the ignition switch failures. the ignition switch failure were supposedly only issues for specific vehicles however the symptoms within the recorded malibu community are totally in line with the same from that recall. we now also have a problem with the ignition struggling to turnover. this is highly unsafe, financially burdening and stressful on the families who are currently dealing with these concerns with no answer or response in sight. requesting assistance.

While driving down the road at about 20mph on city streets my power steering went out while i was turning left into a business and i was unable to turn the steering wheel. i had to turn the car off, then back on, and it would drive for a short while before power steering would shut off again, usually while making a left or right turn. the steering wheel also turns on its own while sitting still. i am unable to drive the car. also, the steering wheel is making a grinding, popping noise and flashing "check airbag" messages when the car is turned on. i have researched this problem and found the power steering issue to be a broad gm vehicle problem. chevy malibus from 2004 to 2010 i believe were all covered for a recall. my vin however is not on this list and i am suffering the same problems as all of these other chevy malibu owners. my vehicle has 128,xxx miles.

First time car was in park. then the traction control light comes but doesn't turn off. also message pops up saying to service traction control. next was stationary, i stopped at a light and the car just shut off. next was stationary and the car turned on but then the cluster instrument lights didn't come on it was completely dark. also while in motion car rpm didn't read anymore and it was shifting hard. another thing it says service tire sensor and service airbag

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 5 mph, the steering lost power and the power steering indicator illuminated. the vehicle was coasted to the side of the road, turned off, and restarted. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 204,000.

I started the vehicle up. vehicle was still in park and the wheel started shaking from left to right ok n it's own for about 45 seconds. power steering then popped up on the dash. the wheel stopped shaking. i backed out and began driving. i began on highway and the wheel starts shaking again. the wheel was shaking from left to right making it hard to steer the vehicle. i had to pull over to the side of the highway.

Loss of power steering assist while driving. brake lights go on when driving and do not go on when braking

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet malibu. when the vehicle was started, the steering became difficult to maneuver. when the contact pulled into a parking lot and turned the vehicle off and on, the failure went away. the failure occurred everyday since february 15, 2019. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the steering wheel input torque sensor was damaged and needed replacement. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 158,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet malibu. while driving 35 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power assist warning indicator illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to carter chevrolet (175 hartford turnpike, vernon, ct 06066, (860) 646-6464), but it was not diagnosed because the vin was not included in a recall. the vehicle was not repaired and the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 171,000.

The steering wheel loses power due to an electrical power steering issue that shows to have been fixed but it is still occurring and could result in an accident due to the limited ability to turn the steering wheel

This vehicle vin code has not shown up for electric power steering recall. 05-07 chevy malibus 3.5l. my 2008 malibu was manufactured july 2007. my understanding is gm vehicles manufactured after the months of march or april are next calander year. so my 2008 chevy malibu is an 05-07 body and understood as best trim level offered before the next body style and model. the 2008 model years body style changed.

I was driving home from work on the highway and the power steering light came on and my car was hard to steer.

While driving on a city street the electric power steering failed. the vehicle could not be steered at low speeds preventing me from turning into my driveway. the dash lit up like a christmas tree and the power steering failure notice appeared. it is obvious that the prior recall was not large enough and did not cover the population of defective vehicles. time for nhtsa and gm to expand the recall and eliminate this danger.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet malibu. while driving highway speeds, the "power steering fault" message displayed and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. the cause of the failure was not determined. the local dealer was not notified of the failure. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 100,000.

The steering goes out while driving, making it hard to steer. the problem started intermittently now it just happens all the time. i did not see my vin number on the list. from the looks of it, it looks like a lot more people are having this issue. also when i'm stopped the steering wheel moves on it's own.

My wife was driving her 2008 malibu when power steering and service esc lights came on the dash. she lost all power steering and had to pull off the highway. when she turned off her car and turned it back on everything worked normal. five minutes later this same thing happened again. it seems to happen often now but the lights are all off when we take it to get it scanned. this problem was included in a recall for certain vin numbers of this vehicle but ours was not included for some reason.

There was a recall on power steering. i took to chevy dealer. they said they fixed it. alittle better later it started doing it again so i called chevy dealer and they said recall time was up there was nothing they can do. now my power steering is completely out. i believe they should fix it and make it right. *tr

Vehicle makes popping nosie when you turn the steering wheel

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the steering wheel seized while driving 45 mph. the steering wheel became difficult to turn and the electric power steering assist warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 143,000.

In 2014 a recall on the power steering was done bulletin 14117a, i had it fixed in 2017 and now the power steering is going out again code co545! the power steering locks up while driving and while parked randomly! causing it very difficult to steer! obviously if this is happening to my car again i am sure it is happening to others! the chevrolet dealership will not do anything about it!

Car has 145,xxx on odometer with a shaking steering wheel, power steering consistently goes out shortly after steering wheel begins to shake causing higher risk for crash which is unsafe for me and my family. every-time i drive the vehicle power steering goes out wherever i am (city street, highway). i have to pull over on the side of the road/highway to restart my car to try to "buy" some time for power steering and then it will go out again. the first time my power steering went out was while i was in an intersection making a left turn and nearly resulted in an accident.

At approx. 140k miles, the eps module failed and caused the power steering to fail and the car immediately changed to manual steering while driving on the highway. the warning chime alerted me to the eps module failure. after getting to a safe area and turning the car off and back on, the eps resumed working for a breif period, only to fail again the same way. this occured multiple times over the next few days until even turning the car off and on again did nothing. the eps just will not engage now at all. gm issued a recall for other 2008 malibu's for this exactfailure but my vin is not listed. i have heard/read about this exact issue from many other 2008 malibu owners.

Driving downtown des moines my message center started dinging, the message output was: "power steering" the steering wheel began moving on its own back & forth, jerking and grinding. at one point jerked out of my hand. it became almost impossible to continue. i pulled into a convience store, bought power steering fluid and started the vehicle. the steering seemed normal. the car was not low on fluids, i didn't travel far before it happened again. by the time i made it home my ribs were hurting from trying to manauver the car home. this malfunction is the eps system and recalls of the 2008 began in 2014. my vin# wasn't included on the list. however, my car has the same problem. at one point my steering wheel jerked so hard it yanked steering wheel away from my grip and i came close to hitting another vehicle. prior to the above occasion, i would be stopped at a signal light and the steering wheel grinded jerked back and fourth and unfettered.

Electronic power steering failure. all of a sudden the message center beeped and gave message power steering and the steering wheel started jerking out of control and could hardly steer. several times after restarting steering would work for awhile. there are recalls on other 2008 but i was told mine had a special warranty that ran out. i just recently bought the car and it isn't right that i would have to pay $1500 to fix this defect. it is a safety issue when all of a sudden your steering wheel jerks out of your hand and moves on its own.

Power steering goes out then comes back sometimes when i turn it off then back on.

On numerous occasions in the last 2 weeks. when starting the car, the words 'power steering' comes on the message board along with a yell illuminated triangle light and an 'esc' light and the cars steering will not control. car will shift but steering cannot be controlled. will also happen while driving. steering will lock until car is turned off and restarted!

The electric power steering has went out on my car all of a sudden. it also would come back on and while i am driving it will suddenly go out as well. it has been continuously happening.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering indicator illuminated while the vehicle was stopped in traffic. the vehicle was checked by an independent mechanic who confirmed a power steering failure and advised the contact to check for recalls. the dealer and the manufacturer were not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 144,000.

Power steering all of a sudden isn't working. engine light and power steering light came on while i was driving. i have electric power steering

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the electronic stability control, electric power steering, and traction control warning indicators illuminated intermittently. the contact felt a strong vibration coming from the steering wheel and the steering wheel frequently seized. the contact had to turn the vehicle off and back on to reset the computer. in addition, the rear brake lights failed to illuminate when the brakes were applied. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 14e044000 (steering) and 14v153000 (steering). the contact felt that the vehicle exhibited the same failure as listed in the recall campaigns. ocean city chevrolet (2366 ocean hwy w, shallotte, nc 28459, (910) 364-9917) was notified of the failures, but did not diagnose the vehicle. the vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic who was to provide further technical information concerning the diagnostic trouble codes and recommendations. the independent mechanic indicated that the failures needed to be addressed by the manufacturer to receive repairs from an authorized dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failures to determine their guidelines to repair the vehicle. the failure mileage was not available.

I just purchased my vehicle last year. my steering wheel keeps locking up and a message comes up saying power steering is out. sometimes it just cuts off while i'm driving. keep hearing about a recall with the electrical power steering in the 2008 chevy malibu. what should i do?

My airbag light is on airbag issues, i have had my headlights checked three times and they keep going completely out there is an issue with the headlights the steering is always shaky its been an ongoing issue with my car

Clunk, knock and rattling sound from intermediate shaft and steering rack and pinion. the clunking and knocking sound happens at slow speeds (parking lots, driveway and city driving) and at 70-75 m.p.h. (highway speeds) it starts to rattle in the steering rack then makes the entire car start to vibrate.

Vehicle was in motion driving on a city street while i was making a left turn onto another city street my steering wheel locked up which enabled me to straighten up my wheel. due to not being able to straighten up my wheel after steering left i was involved in a car accident knocking off my drivers sides headlight and front bumper completely off of my vehicle. after getting the car back home the car would no longer start. the vehicle is now at capitol cheverolet in austin texas and before replacing the recall parts they insisted on a battery replacement i did replace the battery and 3 days later they call and insist on an alternator replacement that will cost me $800 in order for them to start on the replacement/ repairs of the recalls. the battery and alternator all were working in good condition before the power steering issue came about while my vehicle was in motion. i should not be reliable of paying for this. the dealership is also charging me a $65 towing fee!

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the steering wheel shook uncontrollably while driving various speeds. also, the power steering indicator illuminated when the vehicle was started. the vehicle was taken to diamond auto group chevrolet (768 washington st rt. 20, auburn, ma 01501, (508) 635-4207), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 140,000. *tt

The car has a sudden loss of power steering that occurs 1 minute after starting the car. a message is displayed on the driver information center and a chime sounds. the car is impossible to control with out the power steering. this is very dangerous! this happens while driving the car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet malibu. while the vehicle was idling, the steering wheel was unable to be moved and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the dealer (pellegrino chevrolet, 1000 gateway blvd, westville, nj) informed the contact that there were no recalls on the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 76,800. *tt contact states all power locks and sway bar failed and tire pressure button is always on and blank. *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet malibu. when the vehicle was started, the steering wheel moved automatically to the left and right for approximately one minute. there were no warning indicators illuminated. on two occasions, the steering ability became very difficult. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 136,000.
