The car airbag light is on because of the clock spring and the steering is intermittently working other malibus and cars are under recall for steering but mine is not and is not being covered by chevy very dangerous to drive hard steering at low speeds and problem with steering column. *js
Car has low mileage for its year as it was driven infrequently by elderly lady. esp fails at least 3 times per trip no matter if it is day or night cold or hot and occurs with no warning (except for the chimes). iam currently driving this vehicle with this condition on a daily basis. i have gotten used to it, and do not panic when it happens although i would like to drive this vehicle with power steering assist in tact! as far as the recall is concerned gm informed me that this particular 2006 malibu ls is not eligible for the recall because of where it was built!!!? why does that make a difference? what kind of gm logic is that? it was built by the way in kansas city, kansas us. *tr
I have taken my car to sierra chevrolet in southfield, mi where it was purchased in 10/13, since purchasing on 3 different occasions in 5 months for loss of power steering and all systems on dashboard drop to zero (0), gas, speedometer and rpm's. i was first charged $125 (dealer claimed they would split cost) which didn't fix problem. now they are trying to charge me $430 to replace a module with no guarantee this will fix problem. i am being repeatedly told my car does not fall under the recall. i have a copy of letter from nhtsa to general motors dated 3/31/14 identifying safety recall of power steering as well gm's letter to dealerships dated 3/31/14 referred to as bulletin # 14116 which states dealers are to replace torque system in models 2004-2006 malibu. *tr

My vehicle is on a recall with gmc and other things are malfunctioning but gmc are only replacing one issue. chevrolet says they don't know when the parts are going to be available to fix the steering issue but my car has another issue in which the turn signal has a short in it and it doesn't work properly. *tr
Hears a clicking noise from car then it will loose steering and shut off, no acceleration, steering wheel locks up, no lights. all turns off, has happen about 8 times. next time, put foot on brake it jumps, all shuts off, it some times take 3 or 4 times for the car to start back up. chevrolet shop has replaced parts, still can not find out why it shut off. if this has happen to others that has a malibu, please help, with suggestion on what the chevy house can do to help me out. thanks *tr
Okay i proceeded to my car this particular morning and when i started the car the steering wheel was locked. i had to turn the car off, pull the column toward me while turning the car and the wheel was unlocked. once i started to drive i noticed that the wheel was shaking and making noises. the noise became louder whenever i tried to pick up speed. you really notice the shaking at about 35 to 40 miles per hour. i tried troubleshooting and was told by mechanic to change my tires and get an alignment. i did that and that resolved nothing. i don't drive the car past 50 mph but i am actually scared while driving. well i took the car to the dealer yesterday and they informed me that the control module for the steering is fried. the cost would be 918.00. this morning i wake to take the car to another shop to have a dinging noise come on the wheel lock up while i was driving. the wheel is real stiff and i managed to make it back to my house. i looked into the recall of the chevy malibus with gm and was informed that the recall doesn't cover the motor. i am really frustrated and upset and i am looking at just getting rid of this headache for real. *tr

The power steering turns off by itself while driving at any speed, but does it more consistently at 65 mph and above. *js
While accelerating on to the highway to get up to highway speed a chime sounded and there was a sudden loss of power steering. this will reoccur under the same conditions when the car is accelerating to highway speeds and the engine revolutions per minute are in the higher normal range. *tr

I purchased a used car on 3/8/2014-returned vechile on 3/13/2014 for service due to excessive pulling to the left while driving and check engine light came; it was inspected on 2/28/2014; since that time, i had return 3 times for the pulling and 2 times for the check engine light again to be reparied.. the mileage on the car for the check engine was as follows for the code p0605 and evap monitor not ready and malfunction indicator light code 61,737 , 61,804, -dealer claimed it was reparied but continued to come on- 62,355 62,594 - the code was for the evap monitor and i no longer went to dealer since the manager, chris, of the service department said if i was going to report the problems to motor vehicle or attorney general they would no longer service it.(all american ford-[xxx], kingston ny) i brought it to haviland auto repair ([xxx] hyde park, ny)before and after the servicing from along with monroe muffler for estimate on the pulling to the left and the check engine light. a four wheel alignment had been complete and it still pulls and the light continues to come on after so many miles; due to excessive pulling, the tires wil wear easily and at higher speeds-50 + it is work to keep it swaying... Power steering ceased to function while driving at normal speed. i managed to pull over and safely off the roadway. after a half hour, i restarted the vehicle and the power steering seemed to operate ok. this same malfunction has since occurred a few more times over the past year. i have only driver the car approx. 1500 miles since as it could potential be disastrous. should this not be a recall situation? *tr
I was making a right hand turn onto a busy intersection and steering went out i ended up in the lane of on coming traffic turning in a left turning lane in opposite direction. thank the lord no one was in that lane. and the 2nd time 2 weeks later it happened again when i was turning into a exxon station and almost hit the gas pump.just glad my breaks worked good and had both hands on the wheel since the first incident occurred. when will we get a notification about the recall.. i have not received anything yet. if need be i will take more steps because this needs to be fixed and i am not paying for it. i called the place where i bought the car and they gave me a number to call and i did and i was told to wait until i got recall card in the mail and have not seen anything yet......that was a month ago. *tr

I called in this complaint on 03/13/20014 to robin with complaint # 10568974 but it will not show up on search. the air bag light comes on and off at will. i called a complaint to chevy. customer service #[xxx]. on 07-12-12 the steering pump assembly was changed by special coverage adjustment 10183replace steering column installed 25933396 column. we are sure it was not a 2006 column but a newer year that has a recall on it. the chevy. forum has a lot of recalls on air bags. the local dealer o"rielly will not do a scanner check for codes unless the light is on. we had it done a our automotive dealer and it showed code b0012 drivers deployment loop. we consider this a safety issue and should be covered by warranty or a recall on the new steering column. we would like this issue repaired at no cost to us. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The power steering light came on the display. i could not steer or turn the car. i turn the car off for about thirty minutes. i started the car back up called gm dealer on 38th street explained the problem & went in. the service department said that it was power steering column & that it would be 1200 dollars to fix. i did not have the money to fix it. on several occasions this has happened to me. as recently as february 25, 2015 i took my car to a private mechanic & paid 817.00 for suspension work, bushings etc & 253.00 for two tires. the mechanic informed me that the intermediate mid shaft needs to be replace & that there was still clucking noise & rattling in the steering wheel. i test drove the car with the mechanic & as i was turning out of the parking lot the power steering locked up again. it was very difficult for me to turn the steering wheel as i was turning on a busy intersection. the power steering light came on display. i cut my hazard lights on & cut the car off & started the car up....i do not feel safe in this car. i got on line on february 27, 2015 googled 2006 recalls on chevrolet malibu's & seen that there was a recall. i contacted dorman products & left a message in regards to my issue. i also contacted gm 18006302438, spoke with a representative about the issue (power steering) & she asked for my vin number. she also asked me if i was the first owner of the car, i explained that i purchased the car from the andy mohr dealership & that there was a previous owner. the representative informed me that the recall letter to the previous owner on february 5, 2015. i updated my information & received a letter the next day for the recall. i am scheduled to go in for electric power steering assist (recall # 14772) on tuesday march 3, 2015. i hope that this dangerous issue is taken care of. concerned chevrolet malibu owner. *tr

Power steering goes out when accelerating. this started approximately 6 months ago and is becoming more and more frequent. whenever the car reaches 2500 - 3000 rpm's, the power steering stops working. *tr
After (2-3) recalls on steering, after steering sensors replaced also, vehicle okay for about a month, then back to same steering loss issues. loss of power steering and rumbling of the steering column, to the point it feels like the column and a tire is going to fall off ! my first incident started back in 2013-14, total steering loss and hit a guide rail causing driver front fender damage. after several recall repairs, vehicle still recreates same dangerous failing steering situation ! my family is scared to death to drive this vehicle anymore, its an accident just waiting to happen, over and over again. this is a total column problem in these 2006 malibu's, not just sensors, switches, etc. these steering columns need replaced. accidents are inevitable if not addressed totally. shame on gm for trying to piece this problem out as cheaply as possible. concerned, ted meixelsberger

Driving 35 mph and accelerating the steering gave out and locked up. the car jerked hard to the median towards oncoming traffic and was not recoverable. took my foot off pedal which allowed car to stop almost perpendicular to the road. turned car off and restarted which allowed control to move car off to the side of road. dealer says common problem with electrical power steering assist with numerous recalls just not the 2006 malibu. looking at expensive repair and lucky no one was hurt. *tr
The chevy, malibu 2006 models have a recall on the faulty power steering. all except our vin number. we have the power steering problem so why isn't it under recall? the power steering goes out periodically making it difficult to steer especially from a parking space or at low speeds. then it will unpredictably come back on again. this is a safety hazard as it can come back all of a sudden while going around sharp turns. last time we called our local dealer he said it wasn't covered. can you rectify this with chevrolet and get back to me as soon as possible. thank you very much. *tr
We have received a recall approval for a defect in the transmission. but the problem we are having and reported to our chevy dealer has to do with the power steering not working for periods of time when we start the car as well as driving it. its been that way for awhile now as the dealer said it wasn't under recall. i believe it is. i no longer drive the car because its too hard getting out of a parking spot. my husband "deals" with it. last time i drove the car the steering kicked in again going around a turn and i almost crossed the lane. also, at that time my granddaughter had to help me turn the wheel to get out of a parking lot. trying to do so actually strains muscles in my shoulder. shouldn't this problem be under a recall? and if not, why not? we would like to continue purchasing chevys and we're hoping for customer satisfaction pertaining to this matter. thank you very much. *tr
It started in jan, and getting worst, just driving any speed, could be completing turns, anytime it just goes out. took to dealer, they know about recall, said we have to wait for our notice. because it's not all 2006 cars.....it's happening to our car! how much longer before we receive notification? also what if we don't receive notification . should we just get legal help, to get this rectified and fixed now before an accident occurs, before someone gets hurt! sorry if this isn't what this is for, just getting run around and very frustrated and afraid that an accident will happen! *tt
I was driving and was attempting to make a left hand turn in rush hour traffic when i had no power steering in the middle of the turn. also when i turned right into a parking space at the mall the steering went out when i was half way into the parking spot. also i was driving at approx. 25 mph was making a left hand turn when steering went out in a snow storm and i slid into the curb. i was denied by the local chevrolet dealer the power assist repair because they said my vin did not fall within the block of numbers that had the bad steering column assemblies. i had to pay for the repair....the recall came out and the local dealer said no reimbursement because my vin does not fall within the block of numbers that received the bad assembly. i think that block of numbers none sense is pitiful. *tr
When vehicle was started power steering appeared across the radio and also loss of power steering was a result. since then while driving the power steering will come across the radio and also a loss of power steering occurs while driving. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 30 mph, the power steering indicator illuminated and a warning sound chimed. the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the contact merged to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. the vehicle was restarted and the power steering resumed normal operation. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 102,000.
While driving vehicle i notice a fair amount of play in the steering system. when i was at a stop light i observed the steering wheel would shimmy or move right to left on its own. i am not a mechanic but i knew from years of driving that steering was an issue. we took the car in for service and was informed that they would reprogram the steering system and if it recurred they would have to replace the steering motor. this didn't repair the problem and it proceeded to get worst. i contacted gm customer service and received little to no assistance. they did inform me of a bulletin that had been issued and contacted the dealership. this i assumed would resolve the issue, but it didn't. the dealership claimed that gm would only authorize the replacement of the steering column, which was done or so i was told. this didn't resolve the problem as not only do have the shimmy, while driving the power steering stops working and the car becomes difficult to steer. when this occurs warning chimes sound and power steering appears in information area. this is a very serious issue that the manufacture needs to address before something serious happens. *tr
The first is the steering sounds like front end is going to fall apart when driving and when i turn corners. the second is the fuel the car constantly shuts off for no reason. and the third is the air conditoner blows from cold to hot. *tr
2006 chevy malibu maxx. 3.5 engine. when exiting a ramp to enter the expressway the steering on our 2006 chevy malibu locked up pulling the car across two lanes of traffic on the expressway before i could get the vehicle under control . then i pulled to the shoulder of the road. i was thinking low tire or broken drive belt on the power steering as the power steering light was on. after stopping and raising the hood i saw the belt was ok and the tire also was ok. next i started to check the power steering fluid to learn there was no power steering dip stick. i stood there looking stupid thinking maybe this car did not have power steering. well this was a very cold day i got back in the car and started the engine with no power steering light. i turned the steering will and everything was ok so i drove slowly to the next exit. after 500 miles this has not happen again. *tr
Sitting at a light or parked the steering is jumping all around. on expressway the steering wheel glitches back and forth. power steering lost upon acceleration. also sometimes no power steering when car is started. *tr
When the car is started the steering wheel pulls to the left by itself. on occasion there is a loss of power steering and the light comes on and now it is constantly pulling left. if i were to let go of the wheel now,it would turn left and it feels like i have minimal power assist when i turn right. in a nutshell it now feels like it has half its power steering working only when turning left. there also is a clunking noise under the car when i turn the wheel hard .this thumping has been happening since i bought the car . it feels like something under the car is bumping the steering linkage when fully turned. *tr
The power steering failed while i was driving, and i almost hit a car at intersection while attempting to turn to the right when the steering wheel locked up. there are numerous complaints online about this same issue and there was special coverage adjustment #10183 (july 20, 2110) power steering assist, but my vin # was not included in this coverage, even though the problem described in the coverage is the same. a diagnostic scan at dealership verified code co545- power steering module. the part that had to be replaced on my car was part # 25933396- steering column, as listed in the special coverage. i have been in email/phone contact with gm since the incident. as of a phone call today, they refuse to cover the cost of faulty steering column or the labor to have it replaced. the total bill was $645. *tr
As i was pulling out of a parking lot a message came across my radio/temp screen and said power steering. all of a sudden my power steering went out. i drove it a few blocks to make it home with absolutely no power steering. it was tough, but i made it home. i turned the car off and did a little research on the internet concerning my power steering. i seen a lot of people said once they started their cars again the power steering worked, but also went out again intermittently. so i went outside and started my car and sure enough my power steering is working....for now. i am scared to drive it again fearing it will go out and i won't be able to control it and cause a horrible accident. gm needs to recall these cars because this is a huge safety problem! *tr
We were never notified about a recall that occurred with the entire steering systems for malibu's. the manufactures extended the recall up to 150,000 miles. on friday november 23, 2013, we were backing out of our parking spot when our power steering went out on us. we had none. then we turned the car off and back on, suddenly it was there again. here lies the problem; we took it to the local dealership and "they" informed us that there was a recall in the u.s. however, we were not notified and since our malibu was out of the 150,000 miles; they said the recall would not cover it. how can owners of cars/trucks get their safety items fixed, when they have never received the recall notice?! this is a safety issue, not a physical appearance issue. if i am driving along a corner and my power steering locks up, or suddenly stops and i kill or maim another individual who is responsible? gm? as i read the other "complaints" on this site; this is not about car owners trying to receive brand new cars.we all just want our cars to be fixed by the recall regardless of the mileage and to be safe! perhaps, we all should get together and sue everyone who is involved with not getting the information out to the public and gm. just a thought. i do not know about the other owners, but i cannot restart my car in the middle of a corner or going down the interstate at 55/65 miles per hour. *tr
2006 chevrolet malibu. consumer writes in regards to power steering problems. *smd the electronic steering motor/module was replaced. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the power steering became inoperable. the failure recurred intermittently over several years. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the mechanic diagnosed that the steering column would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 10,768.
When starting the car in the garage, there were 4 chimes, and a message on the dic 'power steering.' the electric power steering had failed and was extremely difficult to back the car out of the garage. the car was then shut off and restarted with no recurrence of the problem. it happened again 3 days later, same problem. then again, 4 days later, same situation. we have notified gm of the situation. to us it is a very dangerous problem. there was a recall in canada with gm cars with this problem and the steering column was replaced. why doesn't gm recognize that this problem exists in the usa? as i stated, it does not occur all the time. we were told to take the car to our chevrolet dealer but unless the problem occurs at the dealer, there is no way that they can detect the problem. the computer only stores 'error codes' for a short period of time. we are fearful of driving this car. *tr
Power steering stopped working and a warning sounded and power steering displayed on stereo indicator that it had stopped working. i pulled off the highway and turned the vehicle off and then restated and the power steering started working again. a couple more miles down the road it happened again and i repeated what i had previously done and was able to finally make it home. it has done this numerous times since then. this could definitely cause an accident. hope to get it fixed soon. needs to be recalled by gm. *tr
Several times over the last 6-8 months, i was driving my chevrolet malibu 2006 lt and the car died and my power steering went out without warning. the sensor came on that says "power steering." it seems like every time that it happened, i was making a left hand turn. since i was turning left in the middle of an intersection, i was not driving fast at all. i believe i had my grandchildren in the car on at least one of these occasions. i could not control the steering at all. my car ended up with the front in the middle of the intersection facing the oncoming traffic because you cannot complete the turn when this happens. i thought it must be that it needed power steering fluid. but my husband checked it and he said it does not need power steering fluid. when i heard about the gm recall yesterday, i immediately called a chevy dealer and they said my car vin is not included in the recall. i then checked gm's website and put my vin in and it said that my car is not currently included in the recall. this sounds very wrong to me. i think the nhtsa should closely scrutinize the lt models of the chevrolet malibu 2006 as i am concerned that they have the same or similar defect. thank you for looking into this. i am afraid to drive the car now. i am now using only a single key without the fob as the nhtsa consumer alert on your website states to do. when it happened to me before, i always had the fob and two additional keys on the key chain along with the car key. thank you very much for your assistance. i appreciate your looking into this. *tr

When slowing to a stop, the steering in the vehicle gave out and it was necessary to shut off and turn the vehicle back on the get the power steering to work again. throughout this past winter, it frequently lost steering at stop signs, stop lights, and when moving at low speeds. *tr
